Cristina Pato Quartet
CHAN CENTRE FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS AT UBC
“Classical [piano] music has given
me ways to explore and deepen my understanding of different kinds of styles and music. On the other hand, the Galician bagpipes have always given me new ways to connect with audiences that I could not get as a pianist. In Galicia, you play the bagpipes to make people happy and dance and bring them together. That is the kind of experience I can never get as a pianist. I was always between the two worlds, looking to connect the two” – Cristina Pato

This new piece has been commissioned by the Chan Centre from UBC composition student Michael Kirchmayer as part of an ongoing partnership with the UBC School of Music. Thunderbird Brass Silas Friesen Trumpet; Matheus Moraes Trumpet; Kristin Ranshaw Horn; Kevin Jackson Trombone; Takami Hayashi Tuba Michael Kirchmayer is a Vancouver composer and classical guitarist currently in his third year of completing a Bachelor of Music degree in composition with a minor in music technology. He strives to compose music that is visceral and exploratory. In his Fanfare for Brass Quintet, Kirchmayer has written music inspired by the sustain and drone of bagpipes. He has taken this inspiration, but related it to his own simplified version of a concept known as micropolyphony, which was first conceived by composer György Sándor Ligeti.
