Mariza With her vibrant, soulful voice, and graceful, commanding presence, Mariza is the undisputed queen of the Portuguese art form, fado. An internationally acclaimed vocalist, she has risen from being a local phenomenon known only to a small circle of admirers to one of the most widely acclaimed stars of the world music circuit. Born in Mozambique and raised in the historic quarters of the Mouraria neighbourhood in Lisbon, Mariza’s father encouraged her to pursue fado in light of its cultural significance in the Portuguese community. She refined her craft at the local bars and tavernas in which the musical genre originated. Following the passing of national icon and fado sensation Amália Rodrigues in 1999, Mariza’s musical career skyrocketed when asked to perform at the legendary singer’s memorial, which was broadcast on national television. Two years later she released her first album, Fado em Mim, which quickly led to a number of highly successful international engagements and ultimately earned her a BBC Radio 3 award for Best European Artist in the area of world music. Almost two decades later, Mariza’s illustrious career has spanned six multi-platinum album releases and appearances on some of the most important stages in the world including Paris’ L’Olympia, the Frankfurt Opera, London’s Royal Festival Hall, Amsterdam’s Royal Theatre Carré, Barcelona’s Palau de la Música Catalana, the Sydney Opera House, and New York’s Carnegie Hall. When she performed on the stage of Los Angeles’ Walt Disney Concert Hall the set was especially designed for her by one of the world’s greatest architects, Frank Gehry. No Portuguese artist since Rodrigues has experienced such a triumphant international career, rave reviews from critics worldwide, and countless international awards and distinctions. Her acclaimed musical partners include: Jacques Morelenbaum, John Mauceri, José Merced, Miguel Poveda, Gilberto Gil, Ivan Lins, Lenny Kravitz, Sting, Cesária Évora, Tito Paris, Carlos do Carmo, and Rui Veloso. Her repertoire, while firmly rooted in classical and contemporary fado, has grown to include Cape Verdean mornas, Brazilian and Spanish classics, and many other genres. Mariza has captivated audiences worldwide, re-imagining fado’s ancient melancholic woe into a majestic, graceful, and contemporary sound. She has mastered the roots of her musical culture and developed into a universal artist who is able to open herself to the world without ever losing her Portuguese identity. Her seventh studio recording, simply titled Mariza, was produced by close collaborator and industry legend Javier Limón and released in 2018. Returning to the roots of fado, Songlines describes the record as “soul-baring at its most thrilling… crossing the purity of Joan Baez with the emotional heft of Edith Piaf.”
