MATRYOSHKA EFFECT COMMEMORATING REFUGEES IN VIENNA
TIM MASSA In a time when immigration policies are questionable and refugees seeking asylum is at a very high point, the question for a nation’s tolerance of immigration is indistinguishable. The Matryoshka Park endeavors to integrate, commemorate, perceive, and contemplate a future perspective on immigration. Establishing the park in an area just outside of Historic Vienna allows the location to fit the program of this park admirably. Vienna, since the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, contains a very diverse existence of people and cultures. This is due to the vast amount of immigration, and emigration which existed in the past, and s t ill t o t his p resent d ay. The matryoshka is a Russian nesting doll, containing many smaller dolls, each smaller than the last. The dolls are all discrete objects, and yet they’re part of the same toy. A single matryoshka would not be complete without her sisters. This could relate to a nation and its existence due to immigration. The United States may be one large nation, but its population is composed of multiple nationalities, and only together are they able to create the ensemble. Call it the Matryoshka Effect: when small pieces add up to something greater than the sum of their parts.

DISCOVERY GREEN PARK Toyota Center is often packed with people coming for events. The area around those bars and eating table should be more separated from the hall way. Putting seating and low partitions enclose it more and allow people not to get disturbed by interaction. 7

9 Discovery Green has always been a hot spot for events and public gatherings. However, it always seems to be too much going on which prevents people from really getting engaged and feeling they belong here. Brown Promenade is a beautiful street with big trees. The width of the path could be used for temporary artwork and display, and more seating elements should be placed there. The dock near the splash pad where families and children gather is a great place for those who want to lay back or contemplate.
