MESSAGE from the HEAD OF SCHOOL
I am deeply grateful to embark on this remarkable journey as the new Head of School at Chandler School. When I first set foot on Chandler’s campus in the summer of 2018, little did I know the extraordinary experiences and connections that would unfold. Yet, even then, I sensed that I had found a truly special place, one that would forever shape my professional life. Today, I remain inspired by Chandler’s mission and I am honored to lead our community as we write the next chapter in Chandler’s history.
As an educator, leader and parent, my commitment is unwavering in fulfilling our mission to provide each student with the highest quality and most academically challenging education in a nurturing, balanced and diverse environment. I firmly believe that human connections are the foundation for personal and collective growth. Thus, I am eager to foster deeper relationships with the Chandler community to enrich our legacy of academic excellence and pioneer new avenues for diversity, equity, inclusion and belongingness. In the coming years, guided by our Strategic Plan Leading Together, I look forward to joining hands with our community to propel Chandler’s forward momentum and bring our strategic and interconnected initiatives to fruition.
Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of being guided by exceptional mentors. John Finch, former Head of School, graciously shared his wisdom with me over the past five years, and I worked closely with him during the 2022-23 transition. John’s support has not only shaped my journey but has also instilled in me the values and dedication that I bring to our wonderful Chandler community today.
“I am eager to foster deeper relationships with the Chandler community to enrich our legacy of academic excellence and pioneer new avenues for diversity, equity, inclusion and belongingness.”
Investing in the education of our children stands as our most noble pursuit. Leading Chandler in the essential work of nurturing tomorrow’s changemakers is an exceptional privilege. I thank you for entrusting me with this responsibility, and I extend my deepest appreciation for being part of our compassionate, intellectually stimulating and resolute community. At Chandler, we understand that as much is given to us, much is expected from us, and together, we will ensure Chandler’s future is bright.
Warm regards,
Emily Brown Head of School

Chandler School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin or sexual orientation.
John Finch served the Chandler community as its fourth Head of School from 2000 to 2023. Throughout his tenure, he advanced Chandler’s mission, enriching its individuals, programs and facilities. John prioritized building a diverse student body, recruiting exceptional faculty, innovating curriculum and technology and developing cutting edge campus facilities.
Throughout the 2000s, John committed to building and sustaining a diverse and inclusive community. He wanted Chandler School to be an institution where children are affirmed, honored and celebrated, both individually and collectively, for their likenesses and differences. In the spirit of DEI, Chandler School’s traditions have evolved and the School is on a continuous journey with a shared mission of making a better school, community, nation and world.
John recognized the importance of hiring talented and dedicated faculty, which supports Chandler’s commitment to academic excellence. He was dedicated to the faculty’s professional growth and as Chandler School grew as an institution, it was essential to prioritize leadership development by investing in training programs and mentorship oppor tunities for current faculty. This not only enhanced their skills but also promoted a culture of continuous improvement.
Hiring talented and diverse faculty was vital to fostering a welcoming and inclusive community. Recruiting educators with diverse backgrounds and perspectives enriches the learning environment and provides students with a well rounded education.
Creating a recruitment process that prioritizes diversity and inclusion will ensure that Chandler School attracts and retains top talent.
Chandler School implemented a 1:1 laptop program that significantly impacted teaching and learning. By providing every student with a laptop, teachers integrated technology into their lessons more seamlessly, increased student engagement, and personalized learning to better meet individual student’s needs. Teachers have since incorporated technology into their lessons by having students use their laptops to conduct research, collaborate with classmates on projects and create multimedia presentations.
In addition to the 1:1 program, students gained access to a new, well equipped innovation space where they can explore technology, engineering, and design through hands on projects. Teachers also regularly incorporate STEAM activities into their lessons, encouraging students to think creatively, problem solve and work collaboratively. Maker programs, project based learning and innovation are not just about preparing students for future careers. It also allows students to develop critical thinking skills, creativity and a growth mindset. These skills are essential for success in the 21st century, regardless of the career path students choose to pursue.
Chandler’s campus is one of the best K 8 campuses in the San Gabriel Valley. Thanks to John, leaders and board members, Chandler School rebuilt the South Campus, which provided every Middle School teacher with their own classroom, equipped science

teachers with dedicated grade level labs and equipment that rivals many colleges, sparked creativity in art rooms, created space for the music department and built the Ahmanson Performing Arts Center to host productions.
This project also set a precedent for eco friendly design and community leadership with a low impact parking structure and eight electric vehicle charging stations.
John has been an instrumental figure at Chandler School, inspiring the community to come together and support the students. Through his efforts, the School has been able to secure much needed resources for various projects and initiatives. Some of the notable accomplishments of John’s fund raising efforts include the South Campus Campaign with nearly 500 donor families who contributed $17 million to build the Middle School campus and launch the WE ARE Chandler Campaign, which included the successful completion of the Center for Innovation, housing a maker lab, a music studio and a flexible classroom.
The entire community extends its heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Finch for his invaluable contri butions to Chandler School. We will fondly miss his charismatic presence, morning handshakes, personalized connections to every member of our community, the jovial atmosphere he created through his humor and the playful spirit he brought to the field. We express our deepest appreciation for his unwavering support, steadfast leadership and inspiring vision.
Continuing the legacy laid by remarkable leaders such as Tom and Katie Chandler, Pete Brown and Jeff Stephens, John Finch leaves Chandler School in a stronger position to propel its mission forward under the guidance of our next Head of School Emily Brown.
CHANDLER'S STRATEGIC PLAN 2022-2027
Focused on our vision for educational excellence and centered by our mission to provide each student with the highest quality and most academically challenging education in a nurturing, balanced and diverse environment, in September of 2022, the Chandler community collaborated to envision the next five-year phase of our Strategic Plan.
Informed by rigorous research and analysis, careful listening and constructive conversations, we’ve identified our interconnected core priorities as: Academic Excellence, Belongingness and Well-Being.
These priorities are integral and best advance our mission when we approach them as interdependent elements. We know from research and experience that these three principles - academic excellence, well-being and belongingness - do not operate effectively in isolation. When we tend to our students’ well-being and create an environment where our students feel a genuine sense of belonging, we better position our students to thrive in the classroom. When we challenge our students to take risks in a supportive environment, they develop a stronger sense of self and purpose that amplifies their well-being and further builds the connection they feel to our program and our community. Each element enhances the efforts and effects of the others, making our approach both intentional and impactful.
LEADING TOGETHER LEADING TOGETHER
To realize these core priorities, we’ve coordinated five strategic initiatives to focus and support our employees, students, program, facilities and community:
• Redesign Use of Time & Space
• Support Professional Growth
• Expand Community Connections
• Promote Purposeful Pedagogy
• Communicate with Insight & Innovation
Aligning around our values of being Caring, Challenging and Committed, our core priorities and strategic initiatives work together to cultivate the critical thinking, empathy and growth mindset that empower our students, tomorrow’s changemakers. Leading Together, we will continue to advance our mission and prepare our students to imagine the possibilities, collaborate effectively and take creative actions to bring about a more joyful, resilient and equitable world.
InJune 2022, the Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Emily Brown as Chandler’s next Head of School. With the enthusiastic endorsement of the Chandler community, Emily succeeded John Finch following his retirement in July 2023.
As the fifth Head of School since Chandler School’s founding, Emily embodies the care, challenge and commitment that define and drive forward our mission to provide each student with the highest quality and most academically challenging education in a nurturing, balanced and diverse environment. Emily has served as Lower School Director since 2018 and oversees all aspects of the K-5 program. She gracefully navigated the School through challenges presented by the pandemic and has set the course for the schoolwide strategic planning process.
Before moving out West to join the team at Polytechnic in 2012, Emily served as the District Literacy Coordinator in Minnetonka, MN, where she led efforts to articulate a multilingual literacy plan and prepare the expansion of an immersion program she was integral in launching at the start of her career. At Poly, Emily was a lead teacher in kindergarten and first grade before becoming the K-2 and then the 3-5 Literacy Specialist and Dean of Students at Polytechnic School in Pasadena. In these dual roles, she provided targeted intervention to support neurodiverse students, led parent education about the academic program and facilitated instructional coaching for faculty.
Emily demonstrates drive, optimism and ambition. Chandler School looks forward to the ways in which she will build upon the successful legacy of leaders at Chandler to enrich our tradition of academic excellence and forge new paths. She says, “Investing in our children’s education is our most worthwhile endeavor, and it is an extraordinary privilege to lead Chandler in the important work of preparing tomorrow’s changemakers.”
Chandler School is indebted to the commu nity for their engagement, support, guid ance and time during the Head of School search process. A special thanks also to the Head of School Search Committee for their leadership and commitment to advancing the shared mission and leading Chandler into its next chapter.
Emily remarks, “Thank you for entrusting me with this responsibility and thank you for being a part of our caring, challenging and committed community. At Chandler, we recognize that as much is given to us, much is expected from us, and together we will ensure a bright future for our beloved School.”
We are thrilled to announce the Student-Centered Campus Redesign, a pivotal initiative directly aligned with our Strategic Plan, Leading Together. The multi‑year, phased campus project directly impacts our students’ educational experience and is a testament to our mission to provide each student with the highest quality and most academically challenging education in a nurturing, balanced and diverse environment. In preparation for the upcoming Master Plan process, we embarked on the project, aimed at advancing three major initiatives while reimagining our campus.
• K-2 CLASSROOM EXPANSION & CLASS SIZE REDUCTION
To best meet the needs of our youngest learners and support a solid foundation for the K 8 student experience, we will expand from two to three classrooms for kindergarten, first and second grade. Each section will have reduced class sizes, allowing for more personalized attention, increased participation, regular feedback, improved family communication and heightened academic achievement and engagement.
• K-8 COMMUNITY LIBRARY AT THE CENTER OF CAMPUS
We created the K 8 Community Library, which consolidated two library collections, into one library located at the heart of campus. The library’s new centralized location, aligns with our commitment to our identity as a K 8 school, and provides greater access and supervision to enhance the library experience for all learners.
• A COLLABORATIVE SPACE FOR A HOLISTIC APPROACH
The establishment of a dedicated collaborative space and offices foster an integrated and collaborative approach to advance ongoing curricular development, professional development and student success. The Lower School Director, Lower School Curriculum Directors, the School Counselor and the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, located in the collaborative space, support a holistic approach to the interconnected elements prioritized in the Strategic Plan: Academic Excellence, Well Being and Belongingness.
We successfully completed Phase I of this exciting project during the summer of 2023 and have already seen a profound impact in a short span of time. As we move forward, we are prepared for Phase II of the Student-Centered Campus Redesign, set to take place during the summer of 2024. At the completion of the project, in the fall of 2024, we will have built three new classrooms (Kindergarten, First Grade & Second Grade), a K 8 Community Library, a collaboration space for faculty, flexible working spaces for staff and a new Main Office.
We are grateful to the families who have supported the project through Chandler’s We Are Campaign, including the 2022 2023 CFA gift to build the K 8 Community Library. As we eagerly prepare for Chandler’s next Masterplan, the Student-Centered Campus Redesign is just the beginning of the next chapter in our School’s history. If you would like to support the project or get more information, please contact Chandler’s Advancement Office at advancement@chan dlerschool.org. We look forward to sharing more updates with you as we progress.
Innovation spaces have quickly become a necessity in the world of education, including at Chandler School with Chandler’s Center for Innovation. They are designed to provide students with an environment that fosters and inspires creativity, imagination and problem-solving skills. The importance of innovation spaces in schools cannot be overstated, as they play a critical role in preparing students for the rapidly changing world of work.
One of the primary benefits of innovation spaces is that they allow students to develop their creativity and imagination. This is particularly important in today’s world, where jobs that require creative thinking and problem-solving skills are in high demand. Director of Innovation Pete Carlson oversees this creative space and says, “By providing students with an environment that supports creativity and imagination, our space helps students to become more innovative and flexible thinkers.”
In addition, Chandler’s Center for Innovation has allowed students and faculty to work collaboratively. This is an important skill in the modern workplace, where employees are often required to work as part of a team to solve complex problems. The space has hosted cross-
divisional teams, grade-level teams and interdepartmental teams to collaborate for design thinking, project-based learning and solving real-world problems.
The innovation space offers students a chance to explore and test out emerging technologies. In this era of rapid advancements, it’s crucial for students to have exposure to new tools to stay updated. Collaborating with their teachers, students have the opportunity to delve into and experiment during class time. This hands-on experience aids in the development of their technical skills and fosters an understanding of how technology can be harnessed to tackle real-world problems.
Innovation spaces are necessary to prepare students for tomorrow’s future. With the rise of automation and the changing nature of work, it is becoming increasingly important for students to be prepared for jobs that require creative thinking, problem-solving and collaboration. Spaces like Chandler’s Center for Innovation provide students with the skills and experiences they need to succeed in the future of work, making them a critical part of any school’s educational program.

2023 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD RECIPIENT
At Chandler’s 72nd Commencement Ceremony, Danny Rothenberg ’96 stood before the Class of 2023 as the recipient of the Chandler School Distinguished Alumni Award. As a former student who once played on the field where this ceremony is held, Danny’s journey is an example of the enduring connection between an alumnus and their cherished alma mater.
The Chandler School Distinguished Alumni Award, bestowed upon individuals for their outstanding achievement, inspiring dedication to their community, and embodiment of Chandler’s mission and Six Pillars of Character, signifies Danny’s remarkable professional accomplishments as a Financial Advisor and unwavering commitment and service to Chandler School and the broader community.
As Danny reflects on his time at Chandler, his standout teachers include Mr. Korn, who made science and Substance X unforgettable, and Kindergarten Teacher Mrs. Green, who remains the epitome of an ideal teacher in his mind. He also cherished the guidance of teachers like Ms. Hancock, who supported him through his academic journey. Danny’s gratitude extended to Mr. Anderson, whose coaching style has now become a familiar echo in his own parenting and coaching.
Danny’s connection was reignited through his work with past parent Roger Stephens and their involvement in the Board’s investment committee meetings as they oversaw Chandler’s endowment. It was a return to the School that had shaped his early years. Working with Head of School John Finch and other staff members provided Danny with an appreciation for the people at Chandler. When the opportunity to join the Board of Trustees arose, he realized that his unique perspective as an alumnus could be valuable in shaping the School’s future.
Danny’s tenure on the board was marked by fortuitous timing. He oversaw a capital campaign and the completion of the Middle School Campus, Tower and Seco parking lot. Standing on the shoulders of those who came before him, his leadership and financial stewardship allowed Chandler to complete its largest capital project to date without any debt, ensuring the School’s continued growth and financial sustainability.
As his own children, Morgan ’25 and Willy ’28, entered Chandler School, Danny completed his board term and fully embraced the role of a parent.
Since his time as Board Chair, Dan continues to serve the School, fostering community partnerships with local renowned institutions such as the Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation, One Arroyo Foundation and The Huntington Library Art Museum and Botanical Gardens, generously supporting the School’s initiatives as a community leader and now advancing our community efforts as the President of Chandler’s Alumni Council and Association.
“In this setting high up on a hill above the Rose Bowl, you’ve learned foundational life skills that will set you apart and equip you for success in life.ˮ
”Being from Pasadena is a large part of Danny’s identity. A friend’s father once nicknamed him ’The Chairman’ when he was a teen because he was a natural leader even then. Why we do what we do certainly changes as we age, and Danny is no different. His reasons for being so involved in the community are numerous and layered, but in his heart, he knows how privileged he is to have been raised here and call Pasadena home. He has a deep desire to maintain and enhance it for everyone, and a calling to help form solutions for a brighter future. He is an amazing, talented, brilliant leader whose gift is his ability to relate to all generations and to all constituencies.”
– Chandler Parent
As we celebrate Danny Rothenberg’s accomplishments and honor him with the Distinguished Alumni Award, we are reminded that the Chandler School community extends far beyond graduation day, shaping lives and fostering connections that last a lifetime.
Quoting Danny’s inspiring words from his 2023 commencement speech, ”Chandler graduates are diverse, as they are similar. They possess a unique set of skills and qualities, including adaptability, critical thinking, social competence and a strong work ethic. In this setting high up on a hill above the Rose Bowl, you’ve learned foundational life skills that will set you apart and equip you for success in life.”
Danny’s leadership, commitment and support of Chandler and service to organizations within the broader community is truly inspirational, leaving a legacy that will impact generations to come.
CATHERINE CHAN ’19
Arcadia High School | University of Pennsylvania
In high school, I was very involved in public speaking and engaging in topics that struck a chord with me strongly, whether it included taking part in Model UN or working with my city’s municipal youth council. The experience I cherish the most was on a study abroad trip to Delhi, India. With the help of a scholarship, I engaged myself in learning Hindi, stayed with a gracious host family, and conducted research on the relationship between period poverty and young female students’ attendance at school. This summer was particularly memorable for me because I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to learn and appreciate a new culture through cuisine, traditions and language.
Chandler played a significant part in my journey of personal development, particularly via unforgettable experiences like the insightful day excursion to Olvera Street with Señora Vasquez and the eye-opening vacation to Europe with Ms. Young, Mr. Spencer and Mrs. Dretzka. These varied journeys, which took me to Paris, London, Joshua Tree and the Colorado River, taught me to be resilient and adaptable. I’d been well-prepared for the difficulties of high school and given a solid foundation for my coming college years by Chandler’s thoughtfully curated experiences in each one. This school environment nurtured my passion for connecting with and appreciating different cultures. As I embark on my college journey at UPenn, I’m excited to major in Economics and minor in Political Science, allowing me to explore new horizons.
I’m looking forward to connecting with people from all backgrounds throughout the course of the next four years. Although my high school extracurricular activities may not have been directly related to my chosen subject, the perspective I developed while attending Chandler inspires me to bravely explore new routes and put in persistent effort toward my goals.
MEENA DURAIRAJ ’19
Flintridge Preparatory School | Georgetown University
My years at Chandler were incredibly formative. Having access to such amazing teachers and opportunities, I developed independence and a passion for learning that helped me throughout high school. At Flintridge Prep, I was the head captain of the mock trial team on campus. I helped lead the team to win 1st place in the LA County Mock Trial Championships and 10th place in the California State Championships. Outside of school, I continued the community service that Chandler introduced me to, volunteering with Huntington Hospital and Girl Scouts. I also interned for a political PR firm and the Congressional campaign of a civil rights attorney in Florida.
I am extremely grateful for the time I spent at Chandler. Looking back, I realize how lucky I was to have teachers who cared so much about their students and went above and beyond to inspire us. There are so many moments I will never forget - like Mr. Cal’s fetal pig dissection and Mrs. Dretzka’s Romeo and Juliet t-shirts. An education at Chandler offers so many opportunities for learning, and I would encourage all Chandler students to take advantage of each and every one. Try new clubs and activities, even if they lie far out of your comfort zone, and don’t be afraid to change paths. You never know what class or club might spark a life-long interest or passion.
I plan to double major in government and economics at Georgetown and eventually study toward a career in law. I’m excited about all the opportunities for undergraduate research and politics in D.C. and I hope I’ll be able to reconnect with some of the Chandler teachers soon!
CAMERON LEE ’19
La Salle College Preparatory High School | University of Southern California
In high school, I was actively engaged in a range of activities both within and outside of school. Notable involvements include membership in the National Honor Society, serving as a Class Council Member and participating as a Student Ambassador. Beyond academics, I enjoyed playing volleyball. In the summer of 2021, I attended the National Student Leadership Conference for Business and Entrepreneurship and my participation in the 2022 American Legion California Boys State program allowed me to explore leadership and civic engagement. Additionally, I was a member of several honor societies, such as Mu Alpha Theta, Rho Kappa, and the Chinese Honor Society. I am proud to have received the Excellence in Social Studies Award, the Volleyball Coach’s Award and a Gold Certificate every semester for maintaining an outstanding GPA.
I am currently majoring in Political Economy within the pre-law track, with goals of a double major or minor in finance or a business-law combination at the Univeristy of Southern California. This decision is inspired by my family’s background in the corporate world and my exposure to various fields during middle school and high school. I look forward to exploring new areas through college, continuing volleyball through intramural play and establishing a strong network that will lay the foundation for a successful career.
Reflecting on my journey so far, my advice to current Chandler students is to step out of your comfort zone and forge connections beyond existing friendships. High school serves as a training ground for challenges and opportunities, and your experience at Chandler provides the foundation and confidence needed to take on advanced courses and engage with a broader spectrum of peers in high school. Take risks and be ambitious! Embrace the unexpected paths that may lead to new opportunities.
ELIANA LONGORIA-VALENZUELA ’19
Polytechnic School | Tufts University
As I left Chandler, I truly started to appreciate all the amazing opportunities I experienced. The outdoor education trips, though grueling, were incredibly meaningful and character-building. I loved Chandler PE because we got to try so many different sports that I would have never tried otherwise. For example, I can say I rode a 6-foot unicycle! Chandler provided such an extensive education that I will never find elsewhere.
In high school, I was the leader of both the Latiné affinity group and the Queer affinity group at Poly. I also participated in many councils focusing on creating a more diverse and equitable school. Outside of school, I worked with Partnership for Success as a mentor and a teacher. I also played for Poly’s soccer and crosscountry team.
On the day of my graduation, I was honored to receive one of Poly’s highest honors: the George Hale Integrity Award. Honoring my integrity, kindness and strong morals as a student, the award is selected by both my classmates and the faculty. I also received the Oak Tree award on the cross country team honoring my dedication to my team and teammates for four years.
I am interested in pursuing a double major in Computer Science and Civic Studies at Tufts University. I love computer science and programming, but I am especially interested in the ethicality of technology. I want to help society as we adapt to this new future surrounded by technology.
Although I am sad to leave sunny California, I am so excited to expand my global perspective by meeting new friends and learning about the world. I am so excited to expand my education, feeling prepared and optimistic.
MAX TIPPIE ’19
Harvard-Westlake School | Rice University
During my time at Chandler, I was an active member of the tennis team, fostering a deep sense of camaraderie that fueled my continued participation in varsity teams at La Salle College Preparatory and Harvard-Westlake High School, where I even engaged in external tournaments. Notably, as part of the Harvard-Westlake tennis team, I received a team award for our exceptional performance in the 2021 CIF and State Regional Championships.
My passion for video art found its roots at Chandler, where I was granted significant creative freedom in assignments. I made my first video for a project in my 7th-grade Spanish class that ignited my enthusiasm. This love for the medium persisted, leading me to incorporate film into various school projects across subjects. In high school, I pursued Film and Media courses, achieved success in film festivals and created some incredible pieces of art. Reflecting on my journey, I now find myself contemplating a career in the field of video art.
Entering high school, I earned the President’s Academic Scholarship followed by the Trustee Distinguished Scholarship from Rice University, which influenced my decision to attend. My future plans include studying both business and film, two areas that resonate with my creative and entrepreneurial spirit.
I’m grateful for my educational journey, from Chandler’s emphasis on academics, athletics and mental well-being to experiences like Boojum trips, track meets and unique electives. My hope is to continue enjoying my university experience with the same enthusiasm. To Chandler students, I urge you not to let the pursuit of perfect grades overshadow the joy of being part of this exceptional school and community. Engage in clubs and sports, make friends, step out of your comfort zone and take risks. You’ll find that the rewards of your efforts may surprise you with what you can achieve.

Members of the Class of 2013 reunited after 10 years and celebrated their time-capsule opening.
It has been my good fortune to serve Chandler for the past twenty two years as Head of School. With overwhelming gratitude, I am cycling through the rhythm and the rituals of the Chandler year for the last time. Being present to childhood and early adolescence has been a constant source of personal and professional joy, and the aspect of my job that I will miss most.
I am grateful to Tom and Katie Chandler for realizing their vision and establishing Chandler School in 1950. Relationships and rigor are at the heart of educational excellence, and while mediums have evolved, the message remains as constant now as it did then. Students work hard and achieve when they know their teachers care about them. Tom and Katie would conclude that Chandler students now are not so different from Chandler students then. Chandler has always been full of good kids and good families.
Chandler teachers and administrators continue to be sources of inspiration. Together we have been in service to Chandler’s mission to provide the most academically challenging education in a nurturing, balanced and diverse environment. Being a member of this community of learners has been my greatest honor.
My wife, Aileen, and our sons, Noah ’12 and Graham ’15 are the unconditional loves of my life. School leadership is a family commitment, and mine has accompanied me on this journey with wisdom, patience and understanding. For them, I am most grateful.
“Nothing wilts faster than laurels rested upon.” Over the years, the frequency with which I have used that Shelley quote now leads to eye rolling, so it must be time to go! But it is true. Chandler is a place that churns with ideas to improve teaching and learning and favors growth over comfort. Chandler’s next Head of School, Emily Brown, will build on the foundation left by her four predecessors and lead Chandler into the second quarter of the twenty first century.

The Family Fair was a truly unforgettable event, bringing the Chandler community together to celebrate its legacy and look forward to a bright future under the guidance of Head of School Emily Brown. The love, support and sense of belonging that filled the air showcased the strong bond shared by all members of the Chandler family.

~ THE HEADLEY FAMILY ~
When asked why they chose Chandler School as the educational home for their children, Jon and Wende Headley’s eyes light up with shared enthusiasm. The Headley family, consisting of parents Jon and Wende and their three boys, Matt ’17, Chris ’20 and Jackson ’22, has been an integral part of the Chandler community for years. Their journey has been filled with cherished memories, active involvement and a deep commitment to the School’s mission.
For the Headley family, the decision to choose Chandler was multi faceted. Jon, an articulate advocate for the School, expressed their initial attraction, stating, ”I think we chose Chandler because, at the time, it felt like the perfect school. The strong academics and the great community were a huge draw.” Wende, an active volunteer throughout their 14 years at Chandler, highlighted the exceptional teacher quality and leadership as crucial factors in their decision making process.
It wasn’t just academics and leadership that drew them in. Jon shared, “Chandler’s K 8 program, both then and now, was really attractive because it provides a stable learning environment where kids can develop into who they are as individuals.” This sentiment emphasizes Chandler’s unique offering of a K 8 education, allowing children to grow in a supportive setting before transitioning to high school.
Reflecting on their memorable experiences at Chandler, Jon highlighted John Finch’s daily greeting of students by name, emphasizing its impact on creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The family also expressed their love for Chandler’s drama program and various traditions, including spirit week, eighth grade celebrations and unique sports programming. Wende fondly remembered library time, where parents would come in to read to the kids, creating cherished moments for both students and parents.
“Chandler’s K-8 program, both then and now, was really attractive because it provides a stable learning environment where kids can develop into who they are as individuals.”
Their sons, Jackson, Chris, and Matt, each found their own niches within Chandler. Jackson thrived performing in drama and musicals, while Chris enjoyed his time on several sports teams. Matt was stage manager for the tech crew and discovered his life long love of computer technology at Chandler. The buddy program and the influence of caring teachers like Mr. Cal and Señora Vasquez left lasting impressions. The family spoke highly of the School’s emphasis on individualized learning, with specialized support for students who needed it.
Jon and Wende were not just active parents; they were deeply involved in the Chandler community. Jon was a member of the Board of Trustees for seven years and served as Chair for two years. His financial expertise and leadership helped build on the strong financial sustainability of the School. Wende played a significant role in the Chandler Family Associates (CFA), serving as a class rep and chair of the Shamrock Shoppe. Their dedication to the School extended beyond volunteering their time; they supported the new middle school and Tower campaigns as well as Chandler’s WE ARE Campaign, generously contributing to a Faculty Enrichment Fund to support the teachers their family loved so much.
As Chandler School enters a new chapter with Head of School Emily Brown, the Headley family hopes for continued growth and evolution while preserving the stability and community that has defined Chandler for generations. The Headley family is an inspiration for current and future Chandler families, reminding us all of the power of community, connection and a shared commitment to our School and students.

I furthered my interest in the sciences by majoring in chemistry through the College of Creative Studies. I focused a lot of time on research and was able to put out four peer-reviewed publications. After graduating in 2022, I took a gap year back home in Los Angeles, working in pediatric reconstructive surgery. In August, I donned my white coat jacket to begin my MD/MBA degree at Stony Brook in New York. Thank you, Mr. Cal, for such an excellent introduction to the sciences at Chandler. I fell in love with your class and believe it pushed me along this path. A LOT of advanced things you taught us back then still stick with me to this day, such as sagittal and coronal sutures in the skull. That biology class was instrumental in my journey towards medical school and I hope you keep instilling the same energy into your students.”

CALLUM RANGAN ’19 reflects, “When I was in Middle School, there was always one place that felt special and different from the rest of the school. A place where one could go and almost disappear from an academic environment completely. A room where a test, homework or project seemed less daunting. He was a man who always had a smile and a coffee mug in his hand. Mr. Nancarrow, or as we called him, Mr. Nan, was a shining light for middle schoolers. He was a tactical genius when it came to planning and organizing your schoolwork to make your time as a student less overwhelming. His room was always open if you needed some help. However, I think what was best about Mr. Nan wasn’t that he was just an organizational wizard. It’s that he always had a pair of ears to listen to us. A regular teacher would normally be busy with lesson plans and test grading to be the best listener for us, but Mr. Nan was always ready for a chat. I think that was one of the most important lessons I learned during my two years at Chandler. That at any establishment you find yourself at for an extended period of time, it will always be in your best interests
to find a confidant. I did the same thing with my high school’s Social Media Manager, Ms. Carlos. As long as there is someone there with whom you can just talk to, or maybe even vent, and then build that into a meaningful friendship, any job, school or experience is that much more enjoyable.”

CHLOE LIAO ’19 shares, “Chandler’s versatility in enabling students to acclimate to the academic, social, creative and athletic settings eased my transition into high school. Moreover, Chandler’s emphasis on “giving back to the community” was among the many messages that deeply impacted my high school experience. Reflecting on my community service journey, it originated with Girl Scouts Troop 3721 during my second-grade year at Chandler School. The school’s commitment to tight-knit community values was evident in supporting our troop’s integration into the broader Pasadena area. We contentedly took on opportunities to work with senior citizens, humane societies and underprivileged families. Achieving my Gold Award allowed me to develop the skills necessary to be independent and decisive. Throughout the planning phase, I struggled to choose a specific target because I aspired to help various causes. Ultimately, Chandler’s emphasis on creating intrinsic motivation in students and their families to “give back to the community” inspired my Gold Award Project. I brought my project back to my roots at Chandler. I had the opportunity to present to Chandler’s 5th and 8th graders as well as to the broader community at Chandler’s Big Service Day to bring education and awareness to the benefits of volunteering and service. Through presentations, a website, and a hands-on activity, I aimed to underscore the potential of community engagement. To current students, I hope you realize that your dedication to community service can be a positive chapter in a person’s life, and your actions matter more than you may know. I plan to major in Economics at the University of Chicago and continue to “give back to my community” throughout my collegiate journey and beyond.”
For the Xu Family, Chandler School stands as an example of the power of community, education and evolution. Their story begins with their children, Alison ’27 and Eltony ’28, whose experiences at Chandler have been nothing short of transformative. Annie speaks with pride about Eltony’s vibrant personality, his confidence and his remarkable ability to connect with people. She recalls the day he wore a tuxedo to a school event, leaving a lasting impression on everyone. It’s because of Chandler’s nurturing environment, where academic excellence coexists with self expression and belonging.
Annie and Edward emphasize the sense of community that defines Chandler. “It’s more than just a school; it’s a community,” Annie reflects. The bonds formed among students and parents alike demonstrate the School’s commitment to creating a tightly knit, supportive environment. Edward adds, “Relationships and communication are key.”
The couple also values Chandler’s dedication to academic excellence, rooted in tradition. “Chandler maintains its tradition of academics,” Annie notes. Even as education evolves, Chandler remains steadfast in its commitment to providing a well rounded education. Annie and Edward’s involvement at Chandler goes beyond their children’s education. They understand the importance of giving back to the community that has enriched their lives. Their generous leadership gift to the WE ARE Campaign helped build Chandler’s Center for Innovation. Recognizing the importance of preserving Chandler’s academic traditions while adapting to an ever changing world.
Annie also gives back as an active volunteer and member of the CFA Board. Their close ties and relationships with other Chinese families have helped break down language barriers, creating a welcoming environment and empowering fellow Mandarin speaking parents to become more involved. They have served as a vital bridge for the Chinese community. Their leadership roles within the community inspire fellow Chandler families to support the School’s fundraising campaigns and further its mission and growth. “We’ve been inspired by previous generations of Chandler parents, and now it’s our turn to inspire others,” Annie reflects.
The Xu Family’s experience exemplifies the essence of Chandler–a community where strong relationships, academic excellence and tradition meet. Here, every family plays a pivotal role in shaping the future, ensuring that Chandler continues to thrive for generations to come.

LUCAS CHATHAM ’20 Art has the power to inspire, transform and create connections. Chandler middle schoolers had the pleasure of connecting with Lucas Chatham ’20 as a visiting artist this spring. Lucas has honed his art skills at the prestigious Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA) and also had the privilege of interning for the renowned artist Shepard Fairey.
For aspiring artists, attending LACHSA is akin to entering an artistic crucible that nurtures talent and encourages creative exploration. This renowned public arts high school in Los Angeles has long been a breeding ground for young prodigies. At LACHSA, Lucas remarked, students can develop portfolios in addition to their core classes.
Lucas had the extraordinary opportunity to intern with the iconic artist Shepard Fairey. Fairey, widely known for his influential works such as the “Hope” poster during Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, has left an indelible mark on the art world. Working alongside such a visionary figure allowed Lucas to gain invaluable insights into the creative process, social activism through art, and the power of art to transcend boundaries.
During his visit, Lucas shared insights into his artistic journey, giving students a glimpse into the challenges and projects of an artist. The visit was a reminder that artistic talent, when combined with a strong work ethic and a commitment to making a difference, can lead to extraordinary achievements. Students left inspired, armed with a newfound motivation to pursue their artistic dreams and create art that can resonate with the world.
PAMMI GANGULY ’20 shares
“In the winter of 2021, I began my stem cell research training at Pathways to Stem Cell Science. For several months I learned tissue culture techniques, designed and executed my own experiment and presented my results at the Los Angeles County Science Fair 2022. From there, I competed at the state level at the California State Science Fair. After concluding that project, my biology teacher and I decided to make our own lab facility at our school, La Salle, to allow me to continue my research. With a lot of planning and work, the CARLOW Center for Medical Innovation was created and I obtained funding to continue my stem cell research. My project investigates the development of human induced pluripotent stem cells into cardiomyocytes, testing how different blood pressure medications and naturally occurring electrolytes affect the differentiation and maturation of heart cells. After competing at the LA County Science Fair 2023, I received a Certificate of Achievement in In-Vitro Biology from the Society for In-Vitro Biology. I presented my research at their Annual Conference held in Norfolk, Virginia. Lastly, in August, I was selected to present my research at the São Paulo International Symposium hosted by the International Society for Stem Cell Research this September. As a La Salle College Preparatory senior, I plan to continue my research but shift my focus to neural fibroblasts to explore mouse neural cell growth and development.”
BRANDON CHENG ’21 is a junior at Flintridge Preparatory School, where he is involved with many clubs and activities, including speech and debate, where he is the 2023 National Champion in Extemporaneous Commentary.
JOSIE FELLOWS ’21 is a junior at Flintridge Preparatory School.
CHASE WALDHEIM ’21 reflects, “Since graduating Chandler two years ago— something I still have trouble believing— I’ve integrated myself into the Prep community in my first two years of high school. I’ve begun high school debate, continuing to utilize the skills I learned with Mr. Hulm and Mr. Spencer starting in 6th grade and traveling throughout California for various away tournaments. Outside of debate, I’ve joined the satirical newspaper—the Big Bad— and Comedyzportz, an improv performing arts group. I’ve also become an adamant biker, on track to hit 6,000 miles of riding in 2023. This past summer, I visited 9
European countries with my dad on an entirely self-planned rail trip. Since visiting, I have begun considering applying to universities in the UK—though it might be a bit premature to pick out my colleges just yet. Regardless, I appreciate all the opportunities and skills Chandler has granted me. As much as I look forward to the next chapter of my life, I know I wouldn’t be where I am without Chandler.”
NATHAN WANG ’ 21 is a junior at HarvardWestlake School. He has a strong passion for journalism and is in his second year on the Harvard-Westlake Chronicle newspaper as an Assistant News Editor. He also continues to debate, an activity he first started as a sixth-grader at Chandler. As a Harvard-Westlake student ambassador and a class representative for his Chandler class, he is grateful to be able to represent both schools.”
HOLDEN SMYSER ’22 is a sophomore at Loyola High School and he is enjoying playing football and basketball.
passed away on October 30, 2022. Mr. Hill served the Chandler community for nearly 30 years (1964-1992) as the assistant head of school and teacher of Spanish, drama and ancient history. He is best remembered for the international excursions he planned and the plays he directed several times a year.
Chandler’s former Head of School Jeff Stephens reflects, “He was a legend and was truly loved and respected by everyone. As our assistant head of school, he was a master teacher who not only taught Spanish but, at times, history, math and English - whatever the need. He was always there for all of us, sharing his love for Chandler. He was a gifted musician, writer and he will always be remembered for his wonderful drama productions and special dinners auctioned off at the annual CFA Gala. For Vern, every day was a new adventure begun with a smile and a positive word coupled with warmth and a sense of humor. He was a faithful husband, father and man of God.”
His family shares, “Vern was an accomplished linguist, artist, actor, writer, gourmet chef and world traveler. He loved parties and games; everything was more fun when Vern was involved.” He is survived by his daughter, Debra ’69 (Bruce); grandsons, Brandon (Rebecca), Christopher (Rachel), and Jameson (Ashley); and great-grandchildren, James, Olivia, Kate, Ethan, Eleanor and Henry.
Each year, a Chandler 8th grader is appointed as the recipient of the Vernon L. Hill Citizenship Award, given to the most courteous and cooperative student, respectful and helpful to other students, faculty, staff and the School. With this award, we recognize Mr. Hill’s positive and lasting impact on generations of alumni and all who were blessed to know him as a teacher, colleague and friend.
(1949-2022), who taught science at Chandler in the 1970s, came to the school in a unique way.
Yllka Runkle, the science teacher at Chandler High School was on a field trip with her students in Yosemite when they went on a hike with a ranger, Ken, who was demonstrating Miwok uses of plants. He was part Native American himself, and Mrs. Runkle was so captivated by his presentation that she asked, “Have you ever thought of teaching science?” The transition was made and Ken spent the late 1970s at Chandler teaching middle school science and math, married Dru Sumner, the art teacher, and eventually ended up in Michigan. Ken was a marvelous naturalist with an uncanny gift for finding birds and animals in the wild. He loved hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. He dressed in tans and browns and moved through the forest like a deer. He saw a pygmy owl where anyone else would see a branch. He never missed a water ouzel in a Sierran stream.
He smelled sweet Ceanothus around a bend in the trail. He made twine from milkweed and whistles from elderberry. He knew the plants, birds and butterflies, and he shared his knowledge when he worked for the National Park Service in Yosemite and Sequoia as well as on the trail with his students. With black hair and a flashing smile, Ken was handsome, outgoing and fun. Ken and Cathy Rose, the English teacher at that time, did not see each other for more than thirty years until they met in 2014 in Michigan for a road trip seeking migrating warblers in Michigan, Ohio and Canada. Ken died of cancer in June 2022, leaving his daughter Shannon and one grandchild.
[Cathy Rose, November 2022]
passed away on July 29, 2022. Mrs. Barry served the Chandler community for 29 years (1989-2018) as a 1st grade teacher. Her students fondly remember her passion for poetry, the author’s tea and her famous Barry bucks.
For Christine, teaching was more than a profession; it was her passion and purpose.
She made learning fun and exciting for her students and she was always was one of the first to embrace new ideas and technologies in education.
Her legacy endures in the students and families whose lives were touched by her dedication to education and her memory will be cherished by all who knew her.
Christine is survived by her loving family, husband Paul Weisberg, and sons John and Justin Barry. The family has created a website in her memory and encourages alumni and families to share their remembrances of her. Visit https://www. mrsbarry.com/.
For the Dancer family, the decision to enroll their children, Derrick ’24 and Juleza ’28, at Chandler School was a leap of faith that has paid dividends in ways the family couldn’t have imagined. As a parent who didn’t grow up with the option of private education, Jhinezka and her husband took a chance, believing that their children deserved the very best. Their commitment to providing a quality education for Derrick and Juleza was unwavering.
The journey began with the application process, which, as Jhinezka notes with a warm smile, was made smoother thanks to her husband’s diligent efforts. The moment the acceptance letter arrived and they explored the financial aid options, their dream of a Chandler education became a reality.
Jhinezka reflects, “What sets Chandler School apart is not just the outstanding academics but the sense of belonging and the diverse, supportive community that envelops the students and their families. It’s a place where friendships among parents and students flourish, creating a network of like minded individuals who genuinely care for one another and for their children.”
“What sets Chandler School apart is not just the outstanding academics but the sense of belonging and the diverse, supportive community that envelops the students and their families.”
As for Derrick and Juleza, their Chandler experience is filled with excitement and curiosity. They eagerly anticipate each school day, eager to explore the world of knowledge that Chandler opens up for them. From engaging science lessons to art and music classes, they are immersed in a holistic education that goes beyond textbooks and exams. Chandler School has become a second home for them, a place where they feel safe, supported and celebrated for who they are.
Jhinezka is a shining example of a dedicated parent who actively contributes to the School community including becoming a
class representative, volunteering at countless events and serving as CFA President during the 2021 2022 school year on the heels of the pandemic. Her involvement began when Derrick, who is now an eighth grader, was in first grade. She recalls feeling nervous and unsure about navigating the world of volunteering at Chandler. Still, with the guidance and support of fellow parents and the School’s warm welcome, she quickly found her place.
The Dancer’s story is also connected with the School’s commitment to financial aid. She openly acknowledges that without the generosity of Chandler’s community, affording a Chandler education would have been a challenge. She believes that the support they receive is not just for her children but for the future. It’s a circle of giving that she hopes to continue, passing down the gift of education to future generations.
Jhinezka reflects on the profound impact that Chandler School has had on her family’s life. She recognizes that while the road may have its bumps, the School’s values and educational approach have equipped her children with the resilience and adaptability needed to thrive in a complex world.
As we celebrate the Dancer family’s journey, we also celebrate the spirit of community, inclusivity and opportunity that defines Chandler School. The Dancer family is a shining example of what can be achieved when parents, educators and students unite over with a shared commitment to education and personal growth. Their experience is an inspiration to us all, reminding us that with faith, support and determination, we can create a brighter future for our children.

Last year, we celebrated the retirements of Director of Facilities
Nancy Hutton and Lower School Administrative Assistant Lynne Westphal. Nancy, with 24 years of service, and Lynne, with 23 years of service, were truly invaluable to the Chandler community.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude for their many years of dedicated service to the students, families and colleagues. Their contributions have left a lasting impact, and we wish them the very best in this new chapter of their lives.
