Public Realm at Barcelona
[DIA,WS 2011-2012, Studio Architectural Ecosystem, Semester Project] Studio master [Krassimir Krastev] Team [ Self and Cibi Balakrishnan ]
The task was to create an architectural intervention in an urban setting where a new public realm is needed. We were free to propose a building, infrastructure, landscape, or an urban intervention as our Semester project. We were free to present a complete design project, or a generic spatial, structural, socio-economic, urban or landscape system that can be applied to such a project that aims at improvement of the public realm in the form of research rather than actual architectonic formations as the final product of our project. The proposal should: -Humanize and improve the public realm -Smooth the traffic, pedestrian movement, and improve connectivity within and outside the site -Improve the quality of public space and ensure the area is safe -Improve the micro-climate and the air quality - Be a space to spend time in rather than just a space to pass through Contextual framework for the project: The site was Parc del Fòrum in Barcelona. Although often used for events during the summer, the most of the time the complex is empty and unfriendly. Our task was to suggest ideas to improve the public realm without disrupting its current use as events, exhibitions, concerts venue at times during the summer. During the Experimental Phase of the semester, a body of knowledge comprised of design and research methods, skills, techniques and tools, was accumulated within the studio. The aim of the semester project is to develop this knowledge further and apply it to an actual architectural or urban program. The generic methods and tools should evolve to respond to practical requirements of the particular site and proposed intervention. Often, multiple tools or methods will be applied simultaneously to evolve the project in response to different requirements. In this case a few systems will be developing the project much like individual designers working on the same product. This method of design will ensure that the suggested project is optimized according to a number of different criteria. Further studies in to optimization of complex systems will be required to successfully implement a variety of tools and methods on the same design project.

[DIA,SS 2011-2012, Studio Optimization of performance, Semester Project2 Studio master [Krassimir Krastev] Team [ Self , Evangelia Papadopoulou, Prima Surya Abdullah] Software used [Rhinoceros with grasshopper, Visual basic scripting, 3dsmax ]
The objective of the project is to design a performance space with optimized features like the seating arrangement, the acoustic, the mechanical, the lighting and the structure. The idea is to design a set of scientific processes which make the features like seating, acoustic, lighting etc, to emerge from the types of performances that will be housed within the art center. This design strives to contain a vast array of performances. What is new in this design is, the theatre is not only designed for live performances such as opera, concert, seminar, shadow permance and theatre but also for pre-taped shows like movies. A huge 3-dimensional space is provided for the performance which includes the stage and also the vertical space above it. These kind of performance area is good for acrobatic shows and shadow performances. Even the I-max screening surface provided for movies is also quite grand as it is optimized to cover the complete vision field of each and every audience. There is nothing beyond the screen that the audience can see. What is quite interesting here is, the Imax screen solves dual pupose. It is in fact the same acoustic ceiling which is used during live performances. This acoustic ceiling is composed of few panels which expand to become the Imax screen during the pre-taped shows.
24
The form of seating derived from formulation of visual clearance. The rule that determines the visibility optimization is Eye position of any audience = [head lvl. Of person in front X distance of the audience from stage] Distance of the person in front from the stage The idea that the acoustic panels expand to become the I max screen gives rise to another challenge which is the support rails for this movement. These rails are designed according to the movement of panels and the main structure is designed to support these rails.

Contemporary Agricultural community, Istanbul, Turkey [DIA, Thesis 2012-2013, Studio Performance of Materials, Master Thesis Project] 1st supervisor [Krassimir Krastev] 2nd supervisor [Alexander Kalachev] Team [ Self , Arieo Thanico ] Population growth in Istanbul 1. Since 1970 Istanbul has received migration from Anatolia. 2. The reason is the national industrialization policy. 3. This resulted high demand of food and housing ProblemThe current system is an one way system of food supply from the production end to the consumption end. Each unit in this system release separate CO2. The urban residents never experience the production process of the nutrients. They are alienated from the nature and are just admitted as the consumers of the food market. Thesis statementThe city will provide food for nearly 20 million people by the next few decades. The apparent role of urban agriculture can be comprehended easily. Urban agriculture proposes an economic incentive. The culture of urban agriculture is already existing in Istanbul in many places. The agricultural lands should be protected and new agrarian communities should be formed in order to reduce the gaps between the production end and the consumption end.
30
Over all Aerial View of the proposed Agricultural community with circular farms and Housings A parametric model of the terracing is done using the existing terrain and different terrace width is tested to check the solar access in to the farms. The suitable combination of terrace width found is 40mt.s provided the houses on the terraces have to be designed with solar incident angles for different times of the year. This technique of designing with sun is illustrated next page. Topography - The site has a gradual slope of 8% from west to east. The highest point is on the south west corner and lowest is at north east. Site surroundings - The site is surrounded by more or less all the infrastructures that is required within a radius of 2 kms.

Competition Project International Airport Terminal building at Vishakhapatnam, India
Concept - The design proposed is based on the concept of a sea shell which truly depicts the amphibious nature of the city - The strength and stability characterized by the shell is incorporated in the design form. -The vertical glazed surfaces give definition to different units in the terminal building. -The overlapping curved dome surfaces break the monotony of the journey of the boarders -The steel trusses at both sides of the building act as sculptural pieces giving an invitation note to the arriving passengers. The spread of the building is horizontal instead of vertical for easy flow of commuters. There are 2 floors excluding the basement, which is used for services. IntroductionInstitute for steel development and growth, under ministry of steel organizes design competitions every year with a live project to promote steel design in India. The design problem in 2005 was to design a new international airport terminal building on a site of 200mt. x80mt. At Visakhapatnam, andhra pradesh, India. The programmeTerminal spacesTicket lobby, waiting areas, baggage claim, customs, immigration, public health, eating and shopping areas, circulation, air line operation, services Terminal facilitiesBanks, car rentals, tourist information, shower areas, rest areas, beauty saloons, medical services, foreign exchange, VIP lounge, Laundry and cleaning area, conference and business lounge etc.
