Introduction Alexander, the head of Big Data department in SAP Moscow, was looking at the evening city traffic stream outside his office. The traffic was quite busy, yet dynamic at the same time. Just a year before drivers could only dream of slowly moving in the right direction instead of wasting time in eternal Sadovoye Ring Road traffic jams. Alexander had long noted the peculiar trend – since the traffic situation in the centre became better, many of his acquaintances began to finish their work activities earlier. It was not necessary to wait out traffic jams till around midnight and it became possible to get back home within reasonable time right aſter the end of business day. On the other hand, there were fewer motorists on streets as paid parking inside the ring road could not be afforded by many. Alexander was quite satisfied that Moscow had finally made good use of western countries’ experience. These beginnings were well thought out and the introduction of integrated intelligent transportation system was definitely within reach. Most certainly big data would be involved and Alexander like no other understood the vastitude of various nonstructured information to be accounted for during the design of smart transportation. Alexander gave it a deep thought… So what exactly is the intelligent transportation system? Basically, this is a modern and convenient city traffic organization system. From big data perspective this is a system that utilizes state-of-the-art solutions in transportation systems simulation based on online big data streams.

public transportation costs during major sports events. The entire analysis was based on city-wide car and passenger traffic measurements and corresponding geospatial video data. An additional side bonus was that the integration of the solution made it possible to identify lost transportation means within 10 seconds instead of several days. Alexander proceeded to remember best cases of intelligent transportation systems integration worldwide. For example, Singapore adopted smart traffic management system. Helsinki has HLS Live interactive map that shows transportation vehicles movement around the city in real-time mode. This map can be used to find out where the required bus is located at any given moment and further calculate its ETA. Many other cities introduce toll zones to combat heavy traffic. Thus Stockholm introduced tolls for entering city centre in 2006, which resulted in 25% decrease of central traffic density. So, what is the key importance for the citizens themselves? – considered Alexander. He cast his mind back at his business trip to San Francisco where there is an information system in place allowing the residents to find out about the schedule and its updates on a real-time basis. Informational equipment and current information on transportation schedules and delays pretty much stand for another essential characteristic of the intelligent transportation system. Surely, there is a line of indicators of a transportation system such as average speed, travel time, availability, which can serve as a means of assessment of the current transportation picture in the city.

Alexander recollected recent internal teleconference during which his colleagues exchanged their experience relating to integration of SAP HANA big data analysis solution in China. As a result city transportation services were provided with the big data based control of incoming and outbound traffic online through SAP HANA platform thus reducing traffic jams by, for instance, limiting the number of cars or by reducing

“Solved then”, - thought Alexander. The SAP HANA innovative technological platform has every opportunity to make the transportation system far more convenient and effective for citizens. As soon as tomorrow, he will have arranged a work team for evaluation of a proposal to be submitted to the Moscow city transportation department for creation of a SAP HANA-based intelligent transportation system.

SAP HANA: an Intelligent Solution for Metropolitan City Transport Network

Alexander draſted a list of questions for tomorrow’s meeting: 1. Identify the scope of the intelligent transportation system: what problems would it help solve? 2. Evaluate potential risks and opportunities of the intelligent transportation system project. 3. Describe a high-level SAP HANA architecture as required to solve the transportation issues and to create an intelligent transportation network in Moscow. 4. Size the possibilities of integration of the new solution into the already-existing urban transportation concepts. 5. Estimate the impact of implementation of the intelligent transportation system on safety and security, economics, community and image of Moscow. “Quite a challenge, of course!” – summed up Alexander for himself. – “But the effect is enormous too. The Big Data department has a fair number of large-scale SAP HANA projects in business area. It is high time to start exploring the social spheres, and benefit the metropolitan citizens in, the more so, as having such an extensive experience, and the problem is extremely topical!”

Company structure SAP in Russia is an example of modern flexible and adaptive organisation. Organisational structure of SAP allows to define clear-cut responsibilities for every participant, to adjust business processes, and it opens unlimited opportunities for self-improvement and professional growth. In the organisational structure we can single out the following units. Sales Department. The Sales Department we can consider the generator of company’s capitalisation. The Department is structured by industry and is separated into several sectors, each of which deals with promotion of SAP solutions in certain industries. Successful sales of programming solutions require building a long-standing relationship with customer. All members of Sales Department team take part in this process: customer managers, client program managers, business solution architects, industry consultants, together with SAP solutions development consultants. Consulting Department is no less important in the company than Sales Department. SAP consultants are the specialists that transfer programming products of the company into competitive edge of customers. They are equally professional both in the language of technology and business. Among them there are solution consultants, who are responsible for SAP solutions implementation, and also technology consultants, who provide customers with technical expertise in the sphere of information technology. Business consultants, based on analysis of industry business specifics, processes, company’s high-priority tasks in the framework of business strategy implementation, peculiarities of internal business processes, help clients to identify the spheres of potential growth, to clearly define the optimum strategy of SAP solutions rollout, and to develop the concept of optimisation and further improvement. Their work is especially important, provided the fact that very

frequently introduction of SAP becomes for customers a new stage of development, as soon as together with SAP client receives a global experience of managing business processes, because SAP accumulated solutions architecture for years, and during all this time it has absorbed the most efficient methods of business processes organisation. It is important to mention that these methodologies were invented not only by SAP consultants, as customers themselves took a hand in creating them. Moreover, as you probably know, SAP clients are No.1 companies practically in all spheres of business. Development Department is the youngest substructure of Russian SAP office, which started operation in 2012. The Department is responsible for several areas at the same time: scientific research and innovation, localisation and technical services (technical support) for customers. The presence of this Department is especially important because, on the one hand, it is a generator and accumulator of disruptive technological ideas for business development both in Russia and globally, and on the other hand, it acts as a “quick response unit” that eliminates issues arising at implementations. SAP Education. Training methodologies are the insurance of successful business in all spheres. There is no doubt that in SAP this unit plays an important role. This Department conducts professional training both for employees of SAP proper (principally, sales and consulting specialists), and specialists coming from client companies and partner organisations. In order to provide training across the whole spectrum of offered products, the company arranges quality seminars for specialists. Partner Relations Department. Active interaction with partners is an important component of SAP business development across the globe, including Russia, as soon as

SAP HANA: an Intelligent Solution for Metropolitan City Transport Network

establishing stable and mutually beneficial relations with partners is essential to successful development of the company. The cooperation goes in the sphere of soſtware sales, rendering services to implement SAP solutions, and in the area of marketing and soſtware development. The task of specialists is to support existing partners and to broaden partner network, which presupposes evaluating candidates for partnerships and attracting them. Marketing Department. This mission-critical Department of the company is the birthplace of global strategies and initiatives. People working in this Department are engaged in a wide spectrum of marketing activities: organising conferences and forums, arranging advertising activities for direct contact with target audience, organising interactive campaigns in the Internet, presenting company’s activities in mass media using PR instruments, studying market potential and conducting research. Human Resources Department. Success of most companies by more than 80% depends on nonmaterial components, such as attitude of staff towards their employer, their professionalism and their readiness to invest their best in common cause. Thus, personnel is the major resource of any company, and Human Resources Department at SAP is always in the process of searching for, and forming the best team in the market. SAP University Alliances. The basis of its activity is the philosophy of open cooperation and joint effort. Through training, knowledge assessment, taking part in competitions and events, communication with SAP experts, testing abilities in student entrepreneurship, blogging and other components of professional development, students find their place in wide ecosystem of SAP, consisting of partners and clients of the company, or in Big SAP proper.

Big DATA The term “Big Data” is used to describe a situation, when data becomes a major issue, when its volume surpasses the capacity of currently available technological means, and specific instruments need to be developed for effective work. Big Data has three major qualities: Volume, Velocity, Variety (the so-called “3 V”).

SAP HANA: an Intelligent Solution for Metropolitan City Transport Network

10

What is Big Data? Every day the humanity generates enormous volume of information in the form of messages in social networks, observations of meteorologists, astronomers, geologists, and also commonplace articles and newscasts. Daily the humanity generates over 2.5 quintillion bytes of information, and for the last three years over 90% of all data in the world was created. Universal development of the Internet and penetration of digital technologies in all spheres of society have led to the necessity of processing vast arrays of information. For example, over 2 billion videos are viewed on YouTube daily, and users all over the world add 72 hours of new content every minute. Organisations create petabytes of information every day — from customer data to medical documents. The term “Big Data” is used to describe a situation, when data becomes a major issue, when its volume surpasses the capacity of currently available technological means, and specific instruments need to be developed for effective work. Big Data has three major qualities: Volume, Velocity, Variety (the so-called “3 V”). Volume is a problem of storage space, as soon as storing huge amount of data requires special conditions. Velocity is a problem of time. Variety problem lies in the fact that data oſten come from various sources and can be in different formats, and of different quality. It is impossible simply to add them together and process – complex work is required to bring them to the form suitable for analysis. If we consider Big Data as data produced by people and machines, their major source are precisely the latter, pro-

vided that for the last 10 years the population has increased only by 20%, while the number of transistors (and together with it the volume of hard drives) has skyrocketed by more than 2000%. Machines (including, for example, sensors and intelligent devices, which may interact with external devices) have become major producers of information, and its consumers. This is why, before everything else, it is necessary to ensure not interactive data processing, but programming access to it, in order to be able to automate routine operations, to process observations, to search the data, allowing different information systems to interact with each other. Substantial problems when organising M2M (machine-tomachine) connectivity arise because of inaccurate data, when we have to work with false value data, for example in measurement results. By their physical nature, sensors produce data at a certain margin of error. Giant sensor networks are already producing a tsunami of data that we need not only to store, but to process, to arrive at conclusions on its basis, to take decisions – and to do all this with account to inaccuracy both in original data, and in processing procedures. It is very easy to imagine a situation, when a computer needs to take an independent decision based on monitoring of environment, and this data is inaccurate by nature. A man can relatively easily take decisions, when operating this data. For example, if a man coming from the street tells you that the weather is fine, it is most likely that you will not take an umbrella with you. By contrast, try to get some practical advice from a computer connected to a sensor network! Such popular tasks as con-

SAP HANA: an Intelligent Solution for Metropolitan City Transport Network

Human Face of Big Data solidating data received from different sources (Data Cleaning, Data Merging, De-deduplication) require specific methods of analysis in case of false data, especially when it is measured in petabytes. It is difficult to find an industry untouched by the problem of Big Data. A skill to operate large volumes of information, to analyse corresponding interrelations, and to take weighted decisions, on the one hand, has a great potential for companies from different vertical markets to increase the figures of profitability and return on investment, to boost efficiency. On the other hand, it is an excellent opportunity of additional income for partners of high-tech solutions providers, such as integrators and consultants.

11

Necessity to manage Big Data In the coming seven years the volume of information in the world will reach 40 zettabytes (ZB), which is equivalent to 5200 gigabytes per every human being on this planet. This unit of measuring information holds 270 standard bytes or 1024 exabytes. Let's try to imagine its volume in real-life figures. If a standard book of 500 pages with pictures and diagrams equals about 10 megabytes, and weighs approximately 450 grams, then 1 ZB can hold 457 kg worth of books. According to estimates, the volume of data on the planet will double every two years up to the year 2020. A substantial part of data created up to now has never been researched using specialised analytical instruments. According to IDC estimates, by 2020 only 35% of data will contain information valuable for analysis.

Digital universe includes both digital images and video, uploaded from mobile telephones to YouTube, for example, and HD video broadcasted via provider networks, both corporate data generated by business applications, and data created by Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The number of servers (virtual and physical) globally will grow tenfold, primarily by means of widening and creating new industrial data centres, according to IDC research. Nevertheless, the number of IT specialists to service them will increase by not more than 1.5 times. In addition, analysts expect that in future large part of digital information will be stored in the cloud. If today cloud technologies account for about 5% of global IT expenditure, by 2020 40% of all information in the digital universe will be bound to cloud systems. At the same time, the cloud will be responsi-

ble primarily for data handling and processing, while providing immediate storage only for 15% of information. Analysts pay attention also to substantial contribution of developing IT markets to adding new information to the digital universe. Back in 2005, according to IDC, 48% of all data was generated in the USA and Western Europe, while the aggregated share of developing countries was 20%, and in 2012, the share of developing countries increased to 36%, and is forecasted to reach 62% by 2020. China alone will account for 21% of all digital information in the world. According to Wikibon, in 2013 the market of products and services related to Big Data, grew by 58% as compared to 2012, and reached $18.6 billion. Upon that, 40% of income came from rendering services, 32% - from equipment sales, and 22% from selling soſtware.

allows to instantly analyse business processes. With its help, organisations can immediately respond to constantly changing conditions of business. SAP HANA helps managers to take more reasoned decisions quicker, providing immediate access to critical information, while simultaneously decreasing dependence on IT department when analysing the situation. SAP HANA platform allows to implement a flexible and economically effective approach to managing big data in realtime. Organisation will be able to considerably decrease hardware costs and operational costs related to using several data storages, operating and analytical systems. SAP HANA platform lays the technical foundation for new innovative applications, that use technologies of in-memory computation. At the same time it is possible to substantially increase the performance of planning, forecasting, ensuring operational efficiency, and modelling. The first business application transferred to SAP HANA platform was SAP BusinessObjects Strategic Work Scheduling, in-memory computation version. The efficiency of the solution developed by SAP Company is greatly increasing because of high performance and real-time access to large arrays of transaction-related information. Apart from using SAP HANA platform for dealing with a variety of business tasks, there is also a good perspective for this product in other spheres of activity (medicine, ecology, social and political activity), where a paramount necessity has recently appeared to process vast data arrays in a matter of seconds, and use the processed results in real-time to take certain decisions.

14

SAP HANA Capabilities SAP HANA allows to immediately access to transaction data without hampering the performance of operating systems. That is also a possibility to synchronise key spreadsheets with transactional information directly inside the main memory close to real-time, which makes these spreadsheets easy to access for analysis and search without OS performance degradation. An advanced modelling process supports models for direct access to detailed information, together with analytical models for more complex analysis. SAP HANA innovative product features an optimal reporting process, which encompasses the whole spectre of tasks, from revealing important operational data to generating semantically grouped data within the model, and publishing the final models for general use. The key difference of SAP HANA solution from traditional analytical instruments is the absence of any kind of materialisation, which significantly simplifies introduction of changes to the model. As basic sources of data, the system uses only virtual models that are calculated on the basis of non-aggregated operational data. SAP HANA supports any data sources, which allows to use operational information from third-party applications, and

also in cases when organisations want to broaden the existing analytical models. The system uses simple modelling instruments with the purpose of further increasing the autonomy of business users. Semantically rich presentations turn raw operational data into understandable and valuable information. Business users are able to create new analytical models on their own using the help of web instruments installed in SAP HANA solution. Various solutions for business analytics, whether included into SAP BusinessObjects or not (such as Excel), instruments and application for data analysis can connect to SAP HANA using standard interfaces, for example MDX or SQL. By means of using standard interfaces for existing solutions, operating systems or other business applications, SAP HANA connects to available data sources without negative influence on the existing landscape, and organisations in this case have an opportunity to use their investment in client applications for business analytics systems more efficiently.

SAP HANA for Transport Sector SAP does not specialise in the transport sector, but we already have projects there. For example, in the framework of joint innovation project SAP AG and BMW Group Research have developed a flexible infrastructure to create mobile services for motorists. The experimental prototype is based on cloud platform SAP HANA. Information received from third-party partner services is collected and personalised with relation to the location of drivers and their route. Working on this project, SAP has brought to life its idea about an Internet-connected car. In fact, SAP cloud platform acts as a link between a BMW car and third party services. The information from service suppliers builds up in the virtual store, which allows BMW to offer motorists personalised services. To avoid information overload for the driver, replicated data is deleted or joined. In addition, service offers boast additional sources of information, and in future, there will be an opportunity to unify services to create new offers from scratch. Another prototype supports the “Parking” scenario. Based on user profile and current information about availability of parking spaces, the prototype of “Parking” scenario searches for an appropriate space near destination. Useful information is displayed on the screen, for example cost of parking or suitability of parking lot for a certain car. Then the coordinates of parking space chosen by the driver are easily transmitted to the navigation system. There are other scenarios of using SAP HANA technology in application to transport, which have huge social meaning. In particular, NRI consulting company uses the platform SAP HANA to analyse and manage traffic environment in Tokyo. This is not the only project in Asia: SAP jointly with the Ministry of Transport of China have launched a pilot project "realtime city transport management system" in four major cities: Beijing, Kunming, Chungking, and Tianjin. For China, such

system is of special interest, because in the conditions of growing urbanisation number of transport rapidly increases year by year, together with the fact that by 2025 they expect the inflow of city population by around 400 million people. A unique unified solution from SAP based on SAP HANA technology, cloud computing, and mobile applications will help to monitor the situation on the road in real-time and reroute public transport flows and taxis accordingly. City transport services gets an opportunity to manage incoming and outgoing traffic of large cities in real-time and avoid congestion based on the real-life traffic data. Using SAP HANA analytics has made possible, for example to limit the number of cars or to decrease prices for public transport during important sports events. All the analysis is executed on the basis of obtained traffic measurements, passenger throughput data from around the city, and geo-spatial video content. Also the system has proved itself perfectly to identify and search lost transport vehicles. What used to require several days, now is done for not more than 10 seconds, owing to analysis of data from various sources: cameras, video surveillance systems, databases. As a result of using real-time city transport management system, the city expects not only a decrease in traffic congestion, boosted traffic efficiency, but also a fall in missing cars figures. Speaking about intelligent management of city transport and capabilities of SAP HANA, we need to mention not only data analysis opportunities, but also ensuring a most flexible way to process large volumes of information for various kinds of analysis of specific or random subjects. SAP HANA capabilities to compress data allow to substantially economise on creating a standard data storage. For this reason of complex and unpredictable challenges facing city transport, one of the most widespread business scenarios is dynamic situation analysis using dynamic data sources.

Other Solutions One of SAP global competitors in the sphere of transport is IBM – a major player in high-tech market. Recently IBM has implemented a project for Dublin City Council to introduce an advanced traffic management system. Through using Big Data IBM managed to pinpoint and eliminate the reasons for traffic congestion, which allowed to simplify public transport operation in the city and to reach higher passenger mobility. In cooperation with IBM specialists, Dublin authorities may combine data that they get from various sources: bus timetables, induction loop detectors for cars, surveillance systems cameras, GPS updates received from 1000 city buses every 20 seconds. Aſter analysing the data the solution creates a digital map of the city and superimposes the location of buses in real-time. Traffic inspectors are now able to instantly see the current status of all bus network and can choose a spot and “go deeper" in the detailed information about a certain area, where delay happens. This function allows to define its cause immediately aſter the problem appears before it goes further. Such approach speeds up the decision-making process to tackle traffic issues. The data is used not only for "on the spot" problem detection, but also to evaluate the whole system, and even for city planning. IBM reports have shown that during peak times the

buses that started their work later sometimes gain upon or even surpass the previous service. The gathered information allows to find out if the bus lane operation time is chosen correctly, where would be possible to add new bus lanes, dedicated traffic lights for buses, etc. Having received such detailed data, Dublin City Council even decided to create a task force, which will be responsible for improving traffic conditions for public transport. Ericsson also has services, which compete with SAP, and it actively participates in transport projects as well. In Curitiba, Brazil, there are 3.2 million citizens, and passenger transportation companies use the advantages of electronic ticketing system and transport fleet management. Bus fleet of the city provides service for 2.4 million passengers every day. Communication is based on high-speed mobile broadband network that provides up-to-date information about a variety of services using Vivo, DataProm, and Ericsson technologies. In Serbia in the framework of agreement between Pancevo city authorities, Telekom Srbija and Ericsson, citizens of Pancevo use intelligence services Eco Bus (ecology bus) and Bus Tracker (bus tracking system), which allow citizens control quality of air in the city and location of buses at any time from any place.

Intelligent Transportation System Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is an intellectual system that uses innovations in modelling of transport systems and regulating transport ows and provides the users with higher level of information and security, and also brings a new quality level of road users interaction, as compared to legacy transport systems.

SAP HANA: an Intelligent Solution for Metropolitan City Transport Network

18

The idea of Intelligent Transportation System The main task of ITS is to make city transport comfortable for citizens. Owing to the introduction of this system, passengers have an opportunity to plan their journey exactly: to find out average speed on the road, in what time the needed bus, tram, and other means of transport will arrive, etc. All this helps them to take the right travelling decision with regard to the real situation on the road. ITS differ according to use technology: starting from simple car navigation systems, traffic lights control, cargo transportation control, various systems of notification signs (including information screens), license plate recognition systems, and vehicle speed registration systems, and through to the video surveillance systems, parking lot management data, meteorological services, bridge throwing systems, etc. Moreover, ITS can also utilise forecasting technologies based on modelling of the previously accumulated information. In a broad sense, an intellectual transport system consists of four components: • transport vehicles that will be controlled by ITS, • people using the ITS, • infrastructure, that supports ITS capabilities, • high-speed networks that provide information exchange between transport vehicles and people.

Now we have all prerequisites for ITS development. There are several trends in support. First of all, traffic congestion increase and environmental deterioration require the optimisation of existing traffic management system. Secondly, in the conditions of low state budgets, we need economically effective solutions that simultaneously produce cash flows (for example, paid parking or city centre congestion charges). Thirdly, the infrastructure is getting better, and consequently data becomes more available. Widespread distribution of smart phones and other devices allows getting information cheaply and quickly. The basic element of ITS infrastructure is Situation Centre, which acts as coordination body and unitary control centre of all system elements. The Situation Centre of Intelligent Transportation System fulfils several key roles. Firstly, it organises city traffic using the modelling tools for transport flows. Secondly, it implements measures in the sphere of parking policy. The third function is connected with organising passenger transportation inside the city and in suburban service. It is development and implementation of such measures as tracking the routes of public and specialised transport, giving them priority, and informing passengers about operation of public transport (using information screens, terminals, text messages, the Internet, call centres). And the fourth function is to ensure safety and secu-

SAP HANA: an Intelligent Solution for Metropolitan City Transport Network

rity on transport and in city streets using the road and street video surveillance systems, entrance access management systems for specific parts of roads or to specific areas, and other functions that simplify travelling of city dwellers. Moreover, all these functions must be thought over for all the groups of population. The experience of many major metropolitan cities of the world shows that introduction of ITS allows to increase the throughput of road and street network, redistribute transportation flows from busy highways to other routes with lower traffic intensity, increase traffic speed, improve ecological situation and decrease negative impact of car transport on the environment.

19

The goals of introducing ITS and evaluation criteria 1 economic

Effectiveness of introducing ITS stretches across 5 spheres: 2 social 3 ecological 4 image 5 security

Economic component is manifested in decreased maintenance costs for road and transport complex, which is achieved through automated monitoring and managing road and transport situation, and through transport flow optimisation. Profitability of transport companies may be increased not only by means of mentioned indicators, but also owing to shorter vehicle mileage. The major indicators are the profitability of ITS implementation, transport costs per annum, single ticket price for various means of transport. Road transport safety also increases with the introduction of ITS. This is achieved through decrease in road accident numbers, quick and timely reaction to accidents and emergency situations, and control of compliance with driving regulations. The major indicators are the number of road accidents, and the corresponding death toll. The social aspect of IDS introduction manifests itself in better quality of life for city dwellers by means of shorter travel time

using public and personal transport, and increased convenience when using any means of transport via universal reach of information systems. The major indicators are travel time, average speed of public, personal, and specialised transport, transport reliability (percentage of kept schedules). Another sphere benefiting from the introduction of ITS is ecological situation in the city. Owing to better road and transport situation in the city, harmful emissions and noise pollution decrease. The major indicators are the volume of emissions, percentage of people, who complain about road noise. Finally, shaping a positive image of Moscow as a high-tech and intelligent global capital. Image of city influences increased tourist attractiveness, and also the development of Moscow as a global financial and business centre. The major indicators are the number of tourists per year, volume of attracted investment, position in investment attractiveness rating.

ITS Organisation in Moscow All the components of ITS are already in place in Moscow in one form or another. The basic element of the system is the Situation Centre that consolidates information and takes decisions about the change in road situation. In Moscow this role is fulfilled by state public institution Traffic Management Centre of Moscow City Government (TMS). TMS performs the following activity categories: •agathering traffic information, including the parameters of transport and passenger flows, road conditions, effective organisation of traffic, parameters of environmental damage from traffic, road accident statistics, data for parking lots and locations for temporary detention (for example, auto impounds) of vehicles, •adeveloping recommendations to increase efficiency and safety of traffic organisation in the city of Moscow, •aoptimising the distribution of traffic lights units, information systems, • developing the concept of evolving street and public offstreet parking, including their location, number of parking spaces, tariff policy, etc. • coordinating activities to organise traffic, including the routes of passenger transport; • introducing new equipment and road traffic control system, etc. TMS coordinates all transport services of the city, ensures taking urgent measures to manage the road transport situation and ensuring priority operation of city transport. Since its foundation, TMS has made a big step to reaching the goal of organising IDS. For example, the program is underway to automate traffic management system at the Third

Transport Ring (TTR), including controllable road signs, dynamic information displays, traffic flow sensors, and video cameras. Systems of the same kind that manage TTR tunnels are currently going through acceptance phase. Another project deals with optimisation of traffic lights units included in "START" system. TMS is responsible for the condition of traffic lights, and they remove all failures on a daily basis. This process is organised to work as promptly as possible. Information about traffic lights malfunction may be delivered by local residents via telephone hotline, and it takes slightly over an hour to eliminate the troubles. However, the most important event was the opening of Situation Centre of TMS on December 25, 2013, which aſter several months of test operation has become the base core of intelligent transportation system. This Centre aggregates data from all enterprises working in transport complex: State unitary enterprise "Moscow Underground" (operation of trains, escalators, ticket gates, stations maintenance), State unitary enterprise “Mosgortrans” (data on operation of aboveground transport), suburban railroad companies (train services, functioning of suburban railroad infrastructure), OOO “Aeroexpress” (passenger flow transportation in real-time), State public institution “AMPP” (loading level of city parking lots), and other information. Equipment of the new centre matches corresponding facilities in Europe. The total volume of server storage facilities is 930 terabytes. For reference, the biggest electronic library in Europe created in the Russian State Library has the volume of 162 TB and stores 3 million books. The Situation Centre employs several innovative systems that allow performing relevant tasks. For example, the system of video surveillance allows to shorten the time required to register and respond to an incident taking place inside the street

and road network. Information distribution complex for road users is aimed at preventing complications in highly loaded areas. Information available to city motorists through information panels along city routes is updated in real-time. These services are just a part of Control Centre functionality. In particular, Control Centre operators will soon be able to control the work of traffic lights, taking into account the current intensity and speed on highways. In total, the city has around 2.1 thousand traffic lights out of which 1.7 thousand are currently connected to the interactive map at the Centre. Current road traffic information gets into the unitary system through video cameras installed in the city. Over 6.7 thousand motion detectors have been installed, and they are regularly used to collect information. In order to inform drivers in case of black ice, traffic congestions or road accidents 150 information panels are currently in operation. 708 traffic enforcement cameras monitor the compliance to traffic regulations, and these units can prospectively be used for gathering information about road situation. In locations equipped with traffic enforcement cameras, we currently witness a decrease in road accident numbers by 17.5%. 674 sensors monitor not only total road load, but specifically for every lane, providing information no less frequently than every 1.5 to 5 seconds. Over 6.7 thousand motion detectors have been installed, and they are regularly used to collect information. Also, all of 11,000 public transport vehicles are equipped with GLONASS system allowing to track their status immediately. If a bus, a trolley bus, or a tram are stuck in a traffic congestion, the operator will switch the traffic lights in the necessary fashion to give way to public transport.

21

ITS Organisation in Moscow As regards the control over Moscow parking area, up-todate information about the number of free parking spaces will be instantly deliver to TMS. Mobile units called parkons monitor the situation in parking lots side-by-side with other systems, photograph all violations and transfer data simultaneously to the Situation Centre, and to road police. The Transport Department is already actively using mobile technologies. Using text messages you can pay for parking, or settle a traffic ticket. Moscow motorists not only get to their mobile phones notifications about traffic tickets, but they can also settle them using text messages. In case of traffic violation caught by traffic enforcement camera or by police patrol, a subscriber will receive a notification containing a requirement to pay the ticket, and consecutively and message advertising an opportunity to settle the ticket through text message service. Transport models can be separated into mathematical and imitational. Mathematical models operate the known laws of transportation operation, presented as formulas, equation systems, etc. The second imitate the movement of certain transport vehicles, behaviour of drivers, operation of traffic lights, etc. In practice, most frequently we see a synthesis of both models. Transport modelling systems at macrolevel (country, city, neighbourhood) operate demographic data and such notions as "road graph", "attraction zone", "transportation supply and demand". They have embedded data about the percentage of car usage by population, about street throughput, about number of parking spaces near shopping malls. The macro

model generally uses mathematical methods of modelling and tries to answer the following questions: “Why and where is everybody going?", "Do we have enough street throughput to provide service for everybody?", "What happens if we close this street?” etc. The more precise the model is, the larger amount of different information its stores. Keeping a model up-to-date means reflecting in it all changes in the real world: closed roads, road works, newly appeared roads, traffic lights, street lanes, residential districts, schools, and shopping areas. Keep in their model up-to-date is a labour-intensive and responsible process that imposes high requirements on personnel qualification, or internal process organisation, on quality and stability of information channels. Data-processing centre of the Situation Centre has sufficient capacity margin for further development of ITS. It is planned to locate there equipment for ITS of new Moscow, neighbouring services of State unitary enterprise “Mosgortrans”, State public institution “AMPP”, integration with the Department of Information Technologies, Department of Housing, Utilities and Amenities of Moscow, and with Moscow region. In 2014, the TMS plans to finally optimise the system. The idea of adaptive management of traffic lights and intersections is currently being put to practice. There is also certain potential in prompt and quality informing of road users about current road situation to help them adjust their routes. Moreover, city authorities will carry on paying all attention to uninterrupted operation of city aboveground passenger transport.

22

Smart solutions to transport problems in the world Around the world city authorities utilise solutions for smart organisation of transport, which are diffident in purpose and scale. Introduction of intelligent transportation system is necessary for any metropolitan city, and owing to technological development, all solutions have become quite affordable. In Seoul, New York, Tokyo, Shanghai, Singapore, Amsterdam, Dubai, Hong Kong we can snoop into convenient organisation of major transport flows. In Geneve, for example, such system of traffic redistribution gives priority to public transport. For instance, back in 2009 Seoul received intelligent bus stations equipped with state of the art ICT to provide the citizens with a variety of "intelligent” services, including information about bus routes, maps, weather forecasts. And starting from 2008 new services were introduced: geographical information for browsing street images, information about tourist sights with an option of virtual excursion across Seoul, application for city planning specialists that allows to model the development and repairing of infrastructure. Another example is Hong Kong, where you can purchase specialised soſtware containing an interactive roadmap (Road Network Data) with all street signs and special notifications (Digitized Traffic Aids Drawings), and with traffic congestion statistical data (Traffic Census Data). Moreover, this data is constantly updated. Proximity payments allowed to economise on time and effort. In Hong Kong, Octopus card is very widespread and it is used for electronic payment of public transport fares (un-

derground, buses, trams, etc.), visiting certain tourist attractions, and for shopping in small stores, supermarkets, vending machines, cafes. In order to pay you simply need to put your card against automatic reading unit, and the required amount will be withdrawn from your card. Smartcards in Singapore are personalised: for example, at pedestrian crossings and disabled persons can put their cards against an electronic device, and crossing time will be increased as compared to standard. All roads in Singapore are equipped with video surveillance systems, cameras are installed at the interval of 1 km. Cars are equipped with transponders that track location and speed. Information from cameras and transponders is gathered in the unitary control centre. There is no human control on the road whatsoever: control points have reader units, and cars – cash cards used to make payments. Taxi is an important element of city's transport life. In 1997 all taxes in Singapore received GPS. But Singapore is getting ready for the next step: so all taxes will be unmanned. Induct car goes on electric motor that allows this vehicle to reach the speed of up to 20 km/h. In addition, underground service in Singapore is already pilotless. Security is an important parameter of good transport system operation. In the territory of European Union currently there is a system which calls ambulance in case of road accident. And in the USA mobile operators are required to report the location of subscribers. It significantly increases the speed of emergency response in case of road accidents and other dangerous situations.

SAP HANA: an Intelligent Solution for Metropolitan City Transport Network

New York has introduced a system of road signs using light diodes that economise on electricity. Roadsigns, together with all external ITS devices, are connected to backup generators and in case of network failure they remain in operation. 27 backlit panels in New York are operated at the transport hub of LaGuardia airport. Australian Brisbane has its parking assistance system. It includes monitors with information about free parking spaces and 6-7 addresses of adjacent parking lots. The central computer system is connected with these units via Wi-Fi. Frankfurt also has their own system to help search for a parking space. There are recent successful Russian examples of introducing innovation technologies. During Olympic Games 2014 in Sochi, road safety was monitored by intelligent transportation system. All participants of transportation process, both cargo and passenger carriers, were fitted with navigation equipment. It allowed to track their location and to manage transport itself: transfer commands, establish voice connection with drivers, and also stream video information to logistics centre. Cameras were installed in driver's cab allowing the operator to promptly react on any abnormal situation both inside the vehicle and on the road. Also this system contains all sorts of sensors that gather traffic information and adjust traffic lights operation, creating the so-called green wave, which minimises traffic congestion. Sochi city authorities promise that intelligent system will be further developed aſter the Olympic Games are over.

SAP HANA Startup Focus Program (SFP) Got struck by an idea? Define it, check it out, and develop it with SAP What does a business start with? The answer to this question has long been known to young enquiring minds, who strive to find their comfortable and rewarding place in market economy of the country. For sure, the cornerstones are the following: 1) a bright technological idea looking for its consumer; 2) a strong team that believes in it. Nevertheless, real life tells us that the above-mentioned ingredients are generally not enough to become successful, especially in the long run. It requires serious work on the business model, creating a marketable product, ways to monetise it, and distribution channels. Here at SAP we understand that many perspective teams need external support from "business sharks" in order to start up brilliant ideas. And here we do not mean financial support, but rather opportunity to receive expert advice and access to state-of-the-art technology for creating their solutions. To organise such support we build several different business models that are oriented towards a diverse audience. This is done exactly the same way as for consumers, whose requirements can be satisfied only by giving them something they really need. SAP HANA Startup Focus is probably the most compliant program for current market trends, representing a global business accelerator. If your start-up works in this sphere of Big Data, forecasting analytics and/or in-memory computation, if your developments are devoted to real-time transaction management based on available data, you are a potential candidate to take part in this program, regardless of industry or line of business your solution is created for. And if you think that the best choice for your project is to implement your solution on SAP HANA platform, this is the most serious reason to become a partner of SAP HANA Startup Focus.

SAP HANA Startup Focus Program. How does it work? Why do we need it? Business model of accelerator is simple. It is topical for projects, which are difficult to implement independently as startups, when the possibilities are substantially limited. In the

framework of SAP HANA Startup Focus program, we unify resources that are necessary and appropriate to successfully launch and materialize an idea. Every participant of the program is going through the following subsequent phases in its development:

During different phases of participating in the program you get free access to: • using HANA for your developments through AWS cloud service, • experts, who are ready to help solve technical issues, • educational materials and online courses devoted to HANA, and also to an abundance of useful information to support promoting your solution to potential clients.

A massive success of the project may lie in publishing solution as a separate application on the list of SAP customer products. It all depends on you, your eagerness, and on potential of the idea, to which you wish to dedicate a substantial part of your time. More detailed information on how to become a participant of the program, general requirements, and benefits for your business you can find at the following website: http://www.saphana.com/community/learn/startups
