“When the pre historic man constructed a hut for the first time using bamboo trees and coconut leaves to protect himself from sun and rain, he was starting to exploit nature for his humble needs. Apart from killing the trees he also disturbed the natural habitat of the insects , birds in those trees and interfered in the cycles of nature. That was a beginning……………”

Sustainable design © Commonwealth of Australia - - Third edition, 2005

Sustainable designs are not recent concepts to us, But it’ was ignored, and forgotten……..

PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN UNDERSTANDING PLACE

Sustainable design begins with an intimate understanding of place. If we are sensitive to the nuances of place, we can inhabit without destroying it. Understanding place helps determine design practices such as solar orientation of a building on the site, preservation of the natural environment, and access to public transportation.

PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN CONNECTING WITH NATURE

Whether the design site is a building in the inner city or in a more natural setting, connecting with nature brings the designed environment back to life. Effective design helps inform us of our place within nature.

PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN UNDERSTANDING THE NATURAL PROCESS

In Nature there is not waste. The byproduct of one organism becomes the food for another. In other words, natural systems are made of closed loops. By working with living processes, we respect the needs of all species.

Sustainable Design “Site and C ontext“ - cradle to grave + beyond

PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN UNDERSTANDING THE ENVIRONMENT IMPACT

Sustainable design attempts to have an understanding of the environmental impact of the design by evaluating the site, the embodied energy and toxicity of the materials, and the energy efficiency of design, materials and construction techniques.

Sustainable Design “Site and C ontext“ - cradle to grave + beyond

PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN EMBRACING CO-CREATIVE DESIGN PROCESSES

Sustainable designers are finding it is important to listen to every voice. Collaboration with systems consultants, engineers and other experts happens early in the design process, instead of an afterthought. Designers are also listening to the voices of local communities.

Sustainable Design “Site and C ontext“ - cradle to grave + beyond

PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN UNDERSTANDING THE PEOPLE

Sustainable design must take into consideration the wide range of cultures, races, religions and habits of the people who are going to be using and inhabiting the built environment. This requires sensitivity and empathy on the needs of the people and the community.

PRESERVATION OF NATURAL CONDITIONS DO NOT DESTURB THE WATER TABLE

SELECT SITES AND BUILDING DESIGNS THAT DO NOT REQUIRE EXCAVATION BELOW THE LOCAL WATER TABLE. PLACING A LARGE OBSTRUCTION THAT WILL DISTURB NATURAL HYDRAULIC PROCESS.

Sustainable Design “Site and C ontext“ - cradle to grave + beyond

PRESERVATION OF NATURAL CONDITIONS PRESERVING EXISTING FLORA AND FUNA

LOCAL WILDLIFE AND VEGETATION SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED AS PART OF THE BUILDING SITE. NATIVE PLANTS AND ANIMALS WILL MAKE THE FINISHED BUILDING A MORE ENJOYABLE SPACE FOR HUMAN HABITATION.

A. Two steel stresses forming the primary structure, were fabricated off site and erected by two men and a crane in two days. B. They were anchored by four small concrete piers, poured each side of the creek. C. Spanning between the trusses is a concrete floor slab on steel decking with a layer of rigid insulation. D. The “box” walling and roofing is plantation pine.

Project : High Line Elevated Urban Park Location : Manhattan's ,New York Architect : Diller Scodifio + Renfroto Landscape Architect : James Corner Project Phase 1 : Completed in 2009 Project Phase 2 :2010

Sustainable Design “Site and C ontext“ - cradle to grave + beyond

NEW YORK HIGH LINE PARK The High Line was originally constructed in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District in the 1930s to lift dangerous freight trains off of city streets. Abandoned in the 1980’s the High Line went into decay and disrepair and was rediscovered in popular consciousness in 2000, after acclaimed photographer Joel Seinfeld captured the beauty of the industrial relic in photos: overgrown with wildflowers — an abandoned human structure essentially reclaimed by nature in a matter of 20 years.

Sustainable Design “Site and C ontext“ - cradle to grave + beyond

THE CITY OF NEW YORK WAS ORIGINALLY PLANNING TO TEAR DOWN THE HIGH LINE, BUT A GROUP FORMED, CALLED ‘FRIENDS OF THE HIGH LINE’, TO PROTECT, PRESERVE, AND RENOVATE THE HIGH LINE. THIS EVENTUALLY LEAD TO A DESIGN COMPETITION, AND THE COMMISSIONING OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS JAMES CORNER FIELD OPERATIONS AND ARCHITECTS DILLER SCODIFIO + RENFROTO REHABILITATE THIS ABANDONED SPACE INTO A LUSH, GREEN, ELEVATED PARADISE FOR MANHATTANITES.
