Dear YMCA Family and Friends,

MARGO BYRNE CEO

As we look back on the past year, we engage in a thorough review of our organization’s achievements and challenges. This year has marked a period of remarkable growth and significant progress in advancing the Y’s mission. We have remained steadfast in our commitment to the greater good and inclusivity within our community, especially among the underserved.

Each year, we strive to fortify our organization, making it more efficient and healthier to better cater to the diverse needs of our communities. In recognition of the growing significance of youth development in Santa Barbara and North Ventura Counties, we proudly report a remarkable 27 percent increase in our summer camp enrollment, welcoming over 2,000 children. Furthermore, our Youth & Family Services YMCA has provided crucial support to over 538 young individuals, while our My Home and Street Outreach program has found a spacious new home in downtown Santa Barbara. These accomplishments are a testament to the unwavering dedication of our staff and volunteers, who are the driving force behind the mission-driven work of the Channel Islands YMCA. Our volunteer boards have played an indispensable role in bolstering our annual campaign efforts, serving as a driving force for the numerous communities we are privileged to serve. Their collective commitment has had a profound and lasting impact on our organization, serving as a perpetual source of inspiration. With the generous support of individuals and organizations, we eagerly anticipate an exciting future for the Y. Sincerely, Margo and Dan DAN WATKINS BOARD CHAIR

OUR COMMITMENT TO OUR COMMUNITIES

Christine and Brianna came to the Navigation Center looking for support with housing after sleeping in a rented U-haul truck for over a month. A few weeks into connecting with our services, the couple got into a motor accident and sustained injuries that prevented them from maintaining their employment and wrecking the truck where they had been sleeping. This was a huge physical and emotional blow to the couple, who had to separate during this difficult time. Luckily, our program was able to work quickly with a partnering housing authority property to refer the couple and get them a housing interview. The ladies were able to sign a lease within a day of Brianna’s release from recovery. The program also provided rent while they both healed and worked on employment goals. Lease signing proved to be an emotional step in this couple’s journey as we saw them hold hands and shed a tear while getting a glimpse of their new home.

MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS Haley Street Navigation Center JANUARY 30, 2023 – We opened Haley Street Navigation Center, the first and only resource center in Santa Barbara that serves homeless transitional-aged youth ages 17 - 24. Here we offer basic needs services and counseling to young adults in crisis.

24-Hour Access at Camarillo Family YMCA MARCH 2023 – The Camarillo Family YMCA has taken a bold step towards accessibility by expanding its operating hours to 24/7.

Merging with SLO County YMCA COMING NEXT YEAR – We are proud and excited to welcome the San Luis Obispo County YMCA into the Channel Islands YMCA family. Both YMCAs successfully carried out a vote to merge earlier this year. Leaders of both organizations recognized that we can be better together and improve services and programs across the Central Coast.

Breaking Records at Summer Camp SUMMER 2023 – Our summer camp served more campers than ever. We enrolled more than 2,000 kids in over 7,000 weeks of camp, significantly surpassing our pre-pandemic registrations.

OUR COMMITMENT TO YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

WORDS FROM A ST GEORGE SUMMER CAMP PARENT: “I cannot express enough how grateful

we are for the camp director Raul and all the camp counselors for making the camp a fun and safe environment. The counselors and the kids were all kind and respectful and good influence for each other. There were many opportunities to make new friends and to both try new activities and improve in familiar ones. We both work full time and appreciate that we could continue to work while our children were in a fun and safe space. Both my kids had a great time attending camp and looked forward to going each day. We are grateful to the mentoring you have done for our kids and look forward to seeing you again.”

SUPPORTING YOUTH Before & Afterschool Care and Preschool at the YMCA balances the needs of youth, families and local schools in a fully licensed, supportive and nurturing environment. We believe that children should have meaningful experiences and activities indoors and outdoors that complement and expand their school experience. We also understand the role YMCA staff play in exposing youth to positive role models who build their self-esteem and sense of community.

Summer Camp at the YMCA is packed with activities and new friendships. YMCA campers experience art, STEM activities, sports and outdoor recreation, field trips, and more. Weekly themes bring energy to camp and ensure that each week is a different adventure. All camps are ACA approved with campers’ well-being in mind.

Safety Around Water is built into every one of our swim classes. Teaching children how to be safe around water is not a luxury; it is a necessity. The YMCA introduced group swim lessons more than 100 years ago, and each year, the YMCA teaches more than a million children invaluable water safety and swimming skills.

Operation Ventura is a program that gives homeless, foster, and transitional living youth in Ventura County a chance at enriching experiences to better their future. Through this program, the Ventura Family YMCA offers a swim class and another youth class to these children at no cost to their families.

OUR COMMITMENT TO HEALTHY LIVING WORDS FROM OUR YMCA MEMBERS: “As a young adult, the Y gave me a safe space where I felt included and valued. I was able to lose nearly 100 pounds working out at the Y. I would not have been able to afford a gym membership at that time had I not been awarded a scholarship. As an adult, I now see how the Y’s impacts go so much farther than that. I’m happy to be a contributor to the annual campaign.” “I’ve made so many new friends, in ways I never knew which allowed me to support the community I live in. The instructors are wonderful which has inspired me to get healthier andsupport others and I just can’t say enough for what the Y has given me and allowed me to give back.”

HOW THE YMCA SUPPORTS EVERYONE’S FITNESS JOURNEY LIVESTRONG at the YMCA® is a research-based program offering people afflicted by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities. Y staff, trained in supportive cancer care, work with participants to achieve goals such as building muscle mass and strength, increasing flexibility and endurance, and improving confidence and self-esteem. In addition to physical benefits, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA focuses on the emotional well-being of survivors and their families by providing a supportive community where people impacted by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond.

Open Doors is our scholarship program to ensure everyone in the community can participate in our life-changing programs regardless of their ability to pay. With financial assistance, thousands of kids, adults, and families can benefit from YMCA membership and programs like youth sports, swim lessons, child care, parent-child activities, summer camp, sleepaway camp, teen leadership activities, and many more. All YMCA members receive the same membership benefits, regardless of whether or not they are receiving financial assistance. All of this is made possible by the generosity of our donors.

OUR COMMITMENT TO SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY WORDS FROM OUR NOAH’S ANCHORAGE RESIDENTS: “Noah’s staff have helped me in more ways than I can count. Noah’s has been there for me more than other people. Being here has made me more independent as well. I love Noah’s and am sad to go, but love that I can still drop in whenever I need support.” “I have felt a great sense of community while staying at Noah’s, I have made great connections with youth and staff here and will miss this place, I am thankful for everything Noah’s has done for me.”

We provide a welcoming and supportive environment for youth ages 12-17 who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, have runaway, or are in an unsafe situation. All youth who come to Noah’s have access to healthy meals, warm showers and hygiene supplies, clothing, and a supportive adult. Both residential and non-residential services are intended to support physical, educational, and social-emotional well-being.

Haley Street Navigation Center strengthens the community of downtown Santa Barbara by providing transitional aged youth 17-24 years old with a safe and enriching place to develop to their best selves.
