SAVING LIVES EVERYDAY Thanks to the Y’s donors, Stuart C. Gildred Family YMCA’s Third Grade Learn to Swim program is made available to every school in the Santa Valley for their third-graders. No matter the level of a student’s comfort or experience, the YMCA swim instructors make swim lessons engaging, encouraging and fun by focusing on the tried-and-true methods that we’ve developed from teaching people around the world for more than a hundred years. Drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1 to 14, and the fifth-leading cause of all deaths for people of all ages, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Swim lessons are critical to reducing these deaths, but the cost prevents some parents from getting their kids lessons. That’s where the Third Grade Learn to Swim program comes in. “Studies show that if kids don’t learn to swim by the time they’re in the third grade, they probably never will learn,” said Elvira Carerra, aquatics director at the Stuart C. Gildred Family YMCA. “Swimming is such an important tool, and not just for exercise.” Knowing how to swim is a life-saving skill that opens up a vast array of opportunities to stay fit, develop self-confidence, build relationships and safely enjoy outdoor aquatic activities like snorkeling, surfing, river rafting and more - and it’s never too late to learn!
