DROWNING PREVENTION

Ventura Family YMCA I want to help the YMCA support my community. I would like my donation to continue supporting vital programs at the Y.

“At the beginning of the first group adaptive lessons I had one student who was very scared of getting in. They had previously worked with a different instructor who they were very comfortable with and now they were in a different setting with a different instructor, myself, and was very cautious approaching the water and even more cautious once in the class setting. We took our time getting to know each other and accomplish small tasks like coming down from the stairs, walking around with me, and getting rings with their feet. Eventually they trusted me enough to help them float on their back, practice ice cream scoops and kicking all with support. On the last day of class I asked them if they felt comfortable enough for me to let go and they did!! I let them go and off they went! They swam with two noodles by themselves! They were SO proud of their new abilities that they swam around the therapy pool for the rest of the lesson. While this may seem small it was a huge step for this child who I had to convince to get in the water on the first day.“

“I’m retired and live on my own. Although l pushed myself to do little projects in my newly bought mobile home (it needed lots of love) it was lovely having those classes outside at the Y.” “Yes it was cold, sometimes it was windy, and yes it even rained a couple of times; but it gave me a purpose. It was a reason to get out of bed, walk to the Y, and have some sort of interaction with people during the worst part of Covid. So - THANK YOU!”
