The one constant in Crested butte is CHANGE! On June 4th, Vail Resorts announced that it had entered into an agreement to purchase Triple Peaks, LLC the parent company of Okemo Resort, Mt. Sunapee Resort and Crested Butte Mountain Resort. Other than waiting for regulatory approvals and Vail’s due diligence to be completed, the excitement is on and changes will be happening. We are all looking forward to ski area improvements, but also want the existing character of Crested Butte to remain. So Welcome Vail, let’s all work together for a harmonious transition and a great working relationship! As to the statistics below…they are deceiving. From January to June 2017, 28 vacant parcels of land had sold in the Upper East River Valley. This year during the same time frame, 50 parcels have sold. That 56% increase affects the average price per property sold statistic dramatically, as we know that land is normally much less than a condominium or home in price. Housing permits are seeing the same dramatic rise. In the Town of Crested Butte, 30 building permits were issued between January – June of 2017. This year during the same period of time, 50 permits have been issued, resulting in a 60% increase for the Town. Mt. Crested Butte has been busy as well. There has been a 36% increase in overall building permits issued so far this year, and it could easily double! We are all looking forward to a spectacular summer. The Arts in Crested Butte History of Art in Crested Butte By Nicholas Reti Rising above the early morning fog in shades of primrose and scarlet, Crested Butte and Gothic mountains tower over the historic town of Crested Butte. “The Butte” is an iconic Western scene where civilization meets the edge of the wilderness and the promise of adventure or opportunity awaits in the wildness. Drawn west initially by the romance of riches that followed mining booms, artists have been finding ways to record their experiences in Gunnison Country for over 150 years. The character of the West attracted artists with entrepreneurial spirit, creativity, independence and determination. Photographs, drawings, paintings and poetry preserve fleeting moments of frontier life in the Gunnison Country.

With the arrival of the counterculture of the late 60’s came a wave of artists and Western students searching for a different America, one where they had the freedom to express themselves and live their lives as artists. It wasn’t difficult to find inspiration or something to paint. The region’s many natural landmarks and the buildings leftover or repurposed from the mining days provided plenty of subjects. “The little details told a story about their lives”, Crested Butte artist Susan Anderton recalled. She included many timeless, invaluable details of the town’s historic businesses and residences in her series of pen and ink sketches which she began in 1970. “We were drawing landmarks”.

Artists accompanying the survey and mapping expeditions of the 1850-70’s created the earliest images of the Gunnison Country. William Henry Holmes, who accompanied the Hayden Expedition of 1873, made panoramic sketches in the Elk Mountains including one from the top of Italian Mountain at 13,379ft. His drawing would later be used as reference for a wood engraving in the 1874 Hayden Survey Report. Western State Colorado University had an enormous influence on the arts of the region. Opening in 1912 the school immediately offered classes in the arts from European trained artists who themselves contributed greatly to the pictorial history of the Gunnison Country. The college educated many artists who went on to influence Western art from Taos, New Mexico to Laguna, California. Harry Heil, the influential head of the printmaking department at Western State, was attracted to the impressive natural landmarks including the Curecanti Needle in the Black Canyon. The dramatic but little known canyon had been the focus of many historical artists including William Henry Jackson and Thomas Moran.

Town’s newest landmark, the Center for the Arts, is a monument to the thriving arts in Crested Butte, as is the recent designation of the Crested Butte Creative District. However this is the second time an organization has formed in town to support a dynamic cultural economy. From 1967-2007 the Crested Butte Society promoted cultural growth and at the same time the preservation of town’s character and heritage. Crested Butte Arts Festival (Aug 3-5, 2018)

Come help the Crested Butte Arts Festival (CBAF) celebrate their 46th year, featuring 165 of the nation’s top visual artists in a picturesque outdoor setting. Staged on Historic Elk Avenue, the Crested Butte Arts Festival includes children’s activities in the Art Alley; delectable fare at the Culinary Court; music and entertainment on the Ragged Mountain Stage; educational opportunities with Artist Demonstrations; delicious Montanya cocktails, High Alpine Brewing brews and Lewis Wines’ wines inside the beer & wine pavilion; and an Art Auction, with proceeds benefiting art education and outreach in the Gunnison Valley and the Festival. Crested Butte Music Festival (July 5 - August 11, 2018)

In its 22nd season, the Crested Butte Music Festival will join the worldwide celebration of composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday. Multiple events will showcase his diverse collection of work from Broadway musicals to symphony and opera. This year’s theme of the Annual Celebration of Music Gala is inspired by Bernstein’s iconic portrayal of mid century New York City. Other festival events include bluegrass, gypsy jazz and “hike-to” performances of classical guitar and Japanese Zen music. Oh Be Joyful Gallery Fine Art for Crested Butte “There is something so gratifying about seeing Crested Butte’s beauty expressed in paint by some of the best artists in the West.” Nicholas Reti - gallery owner and artist

By Nicholas Reti and Cricket Farrington Gathered outside a picture window at Oh Be Joyful Gallery, a group of people are intrigued by a large 5’x5’ painting hanging prominently on a wall facing the street. A Native American figure is depicted with outstretched arms taking an ironic family “selfie” in the image entitled “Legacy” by artist of Western Americana Ryan Austin Lee.

Throughout the summer season the gallery mounts a new exhibition every two to four weeks. Our most avid collectors show up in early June to get a first look at over 100 new paintings we receive in anticipation of our busy summer season. Oftentimes paintings are snapped up before they even make it up on the walls.

“I’m always looking to add unique new artists to the gallery who increase the diversity and quality of our offerings,” Reti explains. The main focus of art in the Gunnison Country is the incredibly inspiring landscapes we live and play in. As Crested Butte grows so does the variety and selection of art in local galleries for patrons to discover.

Crested Butte’s dynamic arts organizations open up a myriad of opportunities for collaboration with galleries. The Crested Butte Film Festival invited internationally known artist Jeremy Mann to screen a documentary film about the artist’s process. Oh Be Joyful Gallery coordinated a show and sale of his paintings and launch of his new book to coincide with the screening.

Crested Butte has some of the most supportive and engaged collectors anywhere, whose patronage attracts highly sought after artists from across the country. Over the past ten years the gallery has grown to represent over 35 artists, including six locals, at all career points ranging from artists found in top collections to promising early career painters.

The gallery is also spearheading a research project to uncover and archive the history of art in Crested Butte and Gunnison. The project’s progress and findings will be unveiled at the grand opening of the new Crested Butte Center for the Arts in June of 2019. The newly designated Crested Butte Creative District awarded the project a grant to support the effort.

Unique to Crested Butte, Oh Be Joyful Gallery offers a deep selection of museum quality artwork ranging from perfect little gems to monumental masterpieces. The quality and breadth of artwork in the gallery has attracted clients from over 30 states and several countries.
