The biannual newsletter for Channing Alumnae
A message from the President of the Channing Alumnae Association
Dear Alumnae,
Over the last 20 years there has been a technological revolution which has changed all our lives. We are constantly fed a limitless stream of information, some useful, some not. Channing pupils and their families today look to the school for guidance and suppor t.
I am often asked how we can promote moderation, resilience and honesty in these ever changing times. Often, I call upon the experience of our alumnae to provide a solution in this evolving technological landscape.
Since our foundation in 1885, Channing has experienced many economic and industrial developments and seen new inventions change pupils' lives. The petrol engine, domestic lightbulb, radio, television, washing machines, fridges, the telephone, central heating, the commercial flight, the age of the motorcar, slide rules, calculators and in this century, the emergence of digital technologies.
Our history teaches us that we can overcome challenges, and welcome new developments into our lives. The pillars of a Channing education, our Unitarian spirit, open -minded and benevolent character alongside resilience and patience have always, and will continue to help our pupils fulfil their potential.
The fundamental ethos of Channing School has remained the
same for the last 132 years and I believe still stands us in good stead for the future.
In the words of School Founder, Miss Matilda Sharpe:
“Keep your eyes alert ever ready to gather ideas New and Old. Remember to fly the Highest Flight and never waver”. @ChanningAlumnae

SCHOOL REUNION CLASS OF 1975
Attendance at the event was very good: We had about 30 Old Girls from the Class of 75, including one who had travelled all the way from Tokyo, another from Minneapolis, and our Embroidery teacher (Mary Brown) from the Isle of Man.
Towards the end of the day a few of us went to pay our respects to the victims of the Grenfell fire - the Tower is only a few minutes' walk away from my house where the reunion was held. We took a collection on the day from the alumnae for the victims, and raised a creditable ÂŁ100. Thank you to everyone for their support.
Many thanks to the Alumnae Association for the lovely bubbly and Channing goodies which (particularly the first of the above!) really helped to lubricate our Channing reunion on 24 July 2017.
Thank you also to Catherine Budgett- Meakin and Isabel Raphael from the Channing Alumnae Association for popping in to join us at the start of the reunion event and for bringing with them memorabilia and school magazines. Sarah Chambers Channing 1961-1975
Photos of our reunion on 24th June. We had a fantastic turnout – from as far afield as Australia, Minneapolis, Mallorca and Isle of Man.

My Own Legacy
A lifetime decision for the future of others
One never wants to contemplate what will happen at the
end of the day. But it appears that many of my friends are
discussing exactly this. Maybe it is my age, my family or the
idea of making a difference to others in these austere times,
but I have found that recently I have been thinking about writing my own Will.
I know – I should have done this a long time ago. Yet, I have
put off the paperwork and legal forms when in fact doing so
is really more important than ever. That is, if I am going to
As a registered charity, Channing is always grateful for

It is simple to leave a legacy to Channing in your Will.
It can be included in your new Will, or if you have already

Development Projects Four years ago, we began the biggest programme of
building development ever undertaken at Channing, to transform the School for the future.
The project is now nearing completion and we have a new
Sports Hall, Sixth Form Centre, Music School and Performing Arts Building for all the pupils to enjoy.
Landscaping is currently taking place and Channing is once again looking like the oasis it is, discreetly tucked away behind our
historic facade.
At a cost of over ÂŁ13 million, this project has been financed
through a loan and fundraising. Thank you if you have joined us on this transformative journey by making a donation.
Together we have raised a remarkable ÂŁ2.72 million for our
Capital Challenge Appeal. There is only a little further to go to
reach our target. If you can help
sponsor parts of our new
buildings, do get
in touch with the Alumnae Office. We would be
delighted to have your support.
Thank you again for your
generosity.

In the wake of the exposure of poor practice from over- zealous marketing firms, a new regulation called "General Data Protection Regulation" (GDPR) is being introduced to help prevent unwanted communications and breaches of data protection regulation. We will never share your information with anyone without your consent. Please be assured that any alumnae data is stored securely in the School Archives.

Focus on Tech # Channing Tips
It amazes me how the Reception pupils (4 + 5 year olds) are ever so comfortable with advancing technology. It is a fact that this year’s 6th formers have never known a world without the internet, mobile phone or electronic payments.
In this ever- changing world we need to strive to make the best use of new technologies. # 5 Charge your gadgets overnight for maximum day-time use.
# 6 Be aware of charges for use of the internet when abroad and at home. # 7 Never open an email attachment from an unknown sender.
# 8 Never reveal any pin numbers or passwords to anyone.
So, from the Channing pupils themselves here are some TOP TIPS.
# 1 Don’t be afraid of technology – Conabor!
# 2 No-one knows everything about tech – even if they pretend they do.
# 3 Do not use your phone in the bath/shower! # 4 Use a phone case.
# 9 Get a Facebook page. It is a great way to keep in touch with friends around the world.
# 10 Remember to access WiFi in all locations so as to use free data and not be charged. # 11 Switch off data roaming when abroad.
# 12 Regularly assess the bills for your gadgets. Offers can help reduce costs and don’t be loyal to your provider. # 13 Remember to let everyone know a change in email address – just as you would change your new home address.
# 14 Have IT downtime. Instead, read a book, disengage for a few hours each evening. # 15 Use discount codes when shopping online.
# 16 You don’t have to take a photograph of everything you do or eat!

Remembering Nicole Lehmann
(also known as Nicole Waterman and Nicole Reuben) Channing 1969 -1979 On Sunday 15 October 2017, a group of Channing friends met at the School as part of a fundraising sponsored walk, to celebrate the life of Nicki, who sadly died of a brain tumour in 2016. Izabel Grindal, Jayne Hudson (now Gould).
Nine friends were joined by Nicki’s daughter Alex walking a total of 100 miles. From the School we walked down to Stanhope Road and then to Holne Chase where Nicki grew up and went to pre-school with Madeleine Posner (now Benjamin). Then we went around to Golders Green and back to Highgate through Hampstead Heath which Nicki loved and visited every day. We each said a few words and laid a white rose somewhere along the route that was special to us and our relationship with Nicki. A couple of us placed roses at the school gates.
Nicki’s creative flair began early, when she won a prize at Fairseat for designing a school emblem for the junior school. She was also very good at sport and in Senior School had a place in the first netball, hockey, tennis and rounder’s teams.
She trained as a dental hygienist, married young and had two children, later becoming a grandmother of two boys, and a third grandchild born after her death is named after her.
She then returned to her love of fitness, starting her own business and becoming a personal trainer of great repute. She wrote for, amongst others, The Sun and Top Santé on fitness, appeared on TV and published several books and DVD’s. Nicki was a bright, sparkly, beautiful individual, inspirational, positive and optimistic – always thinking of others, even when she was so ill.
On the walk were Lizzie Palmer, Joy Grover (now Armfield), Cathy Kitson, Dulcie Lancaster (now Rowe), Madeleine Posner (now Benjamin), Jane Caplin (now Rose), Claire Mason,
Nicki is fourth from left at her 50th Birthday celebration. From left – Cathy Kitson, Izabel Grindal, Dulcie Lancaster (now Rowe), Nicole, Madeleine Posner (now Benjamin), Karen Silverstein, Joy Grover (now Armfield), Lizzie Palmer, and Jane Caplin (now Rose) 14

Together we have raised over £4,000 for Brain Tumour Research and Nicki’s daughter Alex has set
up the Nicki Waterman Foundation to support further research. Also in Nicki’s memory a bench is to be placed at the top of Parliament hill as well as a tree on the Heath. Thank you to all of the Channing Community and the Alumnae Association for their help and support.

Keeping in touch – The Channing Alumnae Website
Be the first to hear about events, drinks, Ark Gallery gatherings, dinners, suppers, school tours and parties. Look up your old friends and their profiles and see who is still in touch with each other through Channing Connected. You can update your own page and tell us what you are doing these days as well. You can find photographs from your school days at Channing photos and book tickets for Alumnae events. The website is also helpful for your career, networking and business contacts.
To be part of the Channing online community, go to alumnae.channing.co.uk and ask for a log-in. We will then verify your details, check security settings and send you a unique password to the secure site. We do hope you will sign up as this is a great way to keep in touch, and for us to let you know about reunions and other events we are organising. You might even spot yourself in an old school photo too! We look forward to hearing from you. Alumnae Association Channing School
