Admissions Entry to Channing Senior School is at 11+ and 16+. Chance vacancies in other year groups occur from time to time.
Chance Vacancy There are occasionally vacancies in other year groups. Applicants who apply for a Chance Vacancy place sit an entrance examination, have an interview and a reference is requested from the applicant’s current school.
Open Days Prospective pupils and their parents are most welcome to visit the school. Each year we set aside time for visitors to have a tour of the school, to meet the Headmistress and find out what Channing has to offer. Open Days take place either during the course of a normal school day, so that visitors can see classes in action, or after school at 5.00pm. On Open Days after the school day, there will be work on display and you will be able to talk to staff. Whichever you choose, we hope you will be able to come early, so that you have enough time to see the whole school and hear the Headmistress speak. Please see our website www.channing.co.uk for the dates of our Open Days. In addition, the Headmistress is always happy to see parents individually by appointment at other times.
Year 7 Applicants sit an examination in English and Mathematics. After the examination applicants who qualify are invited to attend an interview. Owing to high demand for places, we regret we are unable to interview every girl who sits our entrance examination. A reference is requested from the applicant's current school. In the case of special educational needs or disability, parents may request extra time or special consideration in the examination if supported by a recommendation from a professional body. If an applicant speaks a language at home other than English, parents may ask for this to be taken into consideration when making an application.
Sixth Form A typical Channing Sixth Form student will have achieved 10 GCSEs at A* or A grade. Achievement at Grade A is usually required in the subjects to be pursued at A level. All external applicants have an interview with the Headmistress and the Head of the Sixth Form. A request is made to the candidate’s school for a reference and for GCSE predictions.
Scholarships and Awards Academic Scholarships are available at 11+ and 16+ for applicants of exceptional ability and potential. Awards of up to 10% of the tuition fees are available at 11+ entry and Music Scholarships are offered on the result of an audition, for up to 50% of the tuition fees. To view our Scholarships and Awards Policy please visit our website: www.channing. co.uk/admissions/scholarships-policy
Financial Assistance (Bursaries) Bursaries are available to offer financial support to parents for up to 100% of the tuition fees, dependent on the financial circumstances of applicants. To view our Bursary Policy, and obtain a Bursary application form, please visit our website. If you require further details about financial assistance, please call the Registrar on 020 8340 2328.
We have a close relationship with our families, and our policy is to give sisters and other girls with close family connections with the school special consideration, and to offer such girls places if we think they will thrive here. Girls in Year 6 at Channing Junior School are usually offered a place in Year 7 on the basis of their academic record at the Junior School and are not required to take the entrance examination.

THE NORTH LONDON INDEPENDENT GIRLS' SCHOOLS' CONSORTIUM Information for Parents Agreed Code of Practice for Entry at Year 7 for September 2017 For the purposes of Year 7 Entry procedures, the following London Independent Girls’ Schools have formed a Consortium. Within this Consortium, certain schools have grouped together (Group 1 and Group 2) to ease administration by having their entrance examinations on the same day. Schools in the same group set common papers, using the same mark scheme and the papers of the two groups are of a similar academic standard. * Group 1: Francis Holland (Regent's Park), Francis Holland (Sloane Square), Notting Hill and Ealing High School, Queen's College, St. Helen's School, South Hampstead High School. Entrance Examination for Group 1 Schools: Friday 13 January 2017 * Group 2: Channing School, More House, Northwood College for Girls, Queen's Gate School, St James Senior Girls' School, The Godolphin & Latymer School. Entrance Examination for Group 2 Schools: Friday 6 January 2017 1. Applications. Please contact each school for which you wish your daughter to be considered, requesting an Application Form and any other relevant information. N.B.You must complete a separate Application Form for all schools to which you apply whether they are in the same group or not. The individual schools to which you have applied will then process your application and send you any necessary information. You are strongly advised to attend Open Days at all the schools for which you have applied and you should ring each school early in the Autumn Term for the dates and times of Open Days. When you register with a Consortium School you will be asked to state at which school you wish your daughter to take the entrance tests. She will be given equal consideration by the other schools in the group to which she has applied. Please note that she may only sit tests at ONE school in each group and she must be registered with the school where she will sit the examination. 2. School Reference. A reference will be requested from the Head of the candidate's school prior to the entrance test. 3. Specific Learning Difficulties. The Consortium be guided by JCQ guidelines with respect to access arrangements. Candidates who have been assessed by a professional and identified with a learning difficulty or particularly uneven learning profile may have 25% extra time, as long as: - they have at least one standardised score under 85, or at least two standardised scores under 90 and, - the current school is aware of the need and
allows extra time in tests wherever feasible. If the candidate uses a word processor for writing in class, a word processing device without a spell check facility can be provided. Submission of appropriate written evidence, from both specialist and school, will be required in support of all access arrangements by 30th November. In exceptional cases, it may be possible to consider allowing extra time where standardised tests are not below 90. These will be considered on a case-by-case basis when supported by substantial evidence but it will be extremely rare that extra time is allowed. Where scores do not fall into the required range, and access arrangements are not given, the educational professional's report will be taken into consideration in appraising the suitability of the candidate. Please note that girls will require reassessment if their needs in Year 9 before enbarking on their GCSE courses. 4. Equipment on Examinations Day. Candidates should bring their equipment to the examinations in a transparent pencil case. They are also reminded that it is prohibited to bring in any electronic device that enables external communication or the storage or retrieval of data, including smart watches. 5. Past Papers. Copies of past papers are available on the school websites of each school. The most recent paper will be made available by 1st September following the examination. 6. Interviews. The Consortium schools make their own arrangements for interviews. 7. Results of Tests. These will be made available to all the other schools in the Consortium. The other schools to which your daughter has applied will then consider whether or not to offer a place on the basis of the tests, interview and school reference. 8. Offers. Offers will be posted out to parents by all schools in the Consortium on Thursday 9 February 2017 (schools using email, will email offers on Friday 10 February 2017). Some of these may be for a place on a waiting list. Information about a position on the waiting list is not given. All girls on the waiting list are considered to have qualified for entry should a vacancy arise. 9. Acceptances. Acceptances must be received by the school at which you wish to confirm a place by noon on Monday 6 March 2017. If no reply has been received to an offer of a place by that date, it will be assumed that you do not wish to accept and the place will be re-offered. You may not give written acceptance of a place to more than one school. If you have any problems or queries at any stage in the procedure, the Registrars of the schools in the North London Independent Girls' Schools' Consortium will be pleased to help you. April 2016.

THE NORTH LONDON INDEPENDENT GIRLS' SCHOOLS' CONSORTIUM 11+ Examinations for Year 7 entry Guidance for parents and teachers
Guidance for English What is in the examination?
How can girls prepare for the examination?
The English examination is one hour and twenty minutes long.
While it is sensible for girls to be familiar with the format of the examination, we would emphasise strongly that in our experience a repetitive drilling of examination tasks and/or the teaching of a formulaic approach to writing are neither desirable nor effective forms of preparation, either for the examination or for our schools.
* It is in two sections, Reading and Writing. The two sections carry equal marks. * In the Reading section, girls are required to read a short passage, normally about a page long, and answer short questions about the passage in order to demonstrate how well they have understood the passage. * In the Writing section, girls are set two writing tasks which may be based in some way on the passage in the Reading section. One will be of a creative nature, the other requiring opinion or discussion. * Past papers are available as an example of the format used. What are we looking for? We are looking for evidence that a girl: * can read with discernment and understanding, with a firm grasp of both implicit and explicit meaning * can express her understanding clearly and accurately in writing * both understands and can use a wide and varied vocabulary
The best possible form of preparation is: * to encourage girls to read as widely and ambitiously as possible * to encourage girls to respond to what they read in an independent, fresh and personal way * to nurture in them a genuine love of books * to give them the opportunity and encouragement to write in as wide a variety of genres, styles and contexts as possible * to encourage them to develop their own individual and distinctive voice in their writing. Above all, we must point out that the Writing section of the examination is designed to assess how well girls can write in an unprepared context. The insertion of preprepared pieces of writing which are not relevant to the task set will be severely penalised in the marking.
* can express herself in writing with facility, fluency, range and imagination * can express personal opinion in a reasoned and structured way * has a good understanding of the effects created by language, both in others' writing and in her own.

THE NORTH LONDON INDEPENDENT GIRLS' SCHOOLS' CONSORTIUM 11+ Examinations for Year 7 entry Guidance for parents and teachers
Guidance for Mathematics What is in the examination?
How can girls prepare for the examination?
* The Mathematics examination is one hour and fifteen minutes long. * The content of the paper in all areas will be based on the assumption that candidates are covering the National Curriculum. * There are several sample papers on each schools' website giving an indication of the type of questions which will appear in the January 2017 papers. * There will be a variety of questions, testing basic numerical skills, problem solving and logical thinking. * Girls may also be required to demonstrate more developed powers of reasoning and the ability to solve simple problems with a newly introduced concept.
* Girls need to be able to show their ability with basic skills but it is also important that they know how to use these skills to solve problems. Practice with word or diagram-based questions should be encouraged. * It is recommended that girls are aware of the type of questions they will be facing as shown in the sample questions available on each school's website. * Girls should be encouraged to check their work for accuracy and to show any necessary working when completing mathematical tasks.
* The questions will not necessarily become harder towards the end of the paper. Girls should be encouraged not to spend too long on any question but should move on to later questions and return to earlier ones if they have time. * Girls only need a pencil and a rubber for the examination. * Calculators are not allowed in the examination, nor are rulers. What are we looking for? We are looking for evidence that a girl: * has a sound grasp of basic mathematical skills * has the ability to complete mathematical tasks logically * has the understanding to solve mathematical problems.

Contact between the Year groups
All girls must wear the school uniform except for those in the Sixth Form, who may wear appropriate clothes of their own choice. The school uniform supplier is: Uniform4Kids, 1103/1105 Finchley Road, Temple Fortune, London, NW11 0QB. Tel: 020 8457 7481.
We believe that the contact between older and younger girls is valued by both sides. Sixth Form girls will often run lunchtime clubs and activities. We expect older girls to play a part in caring for and supporting younger pupils, for example, every girl in Year 7 has a ‘Big Sister’ in Year 8. These links between the year groups extend up through the school.
House system All girls at Channing belong to one of our Houses, all named after eminent people of Highgate village: GOODWIN | SHARPE | SPEARS | WATERLOW Girls may enter inter-House competitions such as Debating, Sports, Poetry and Reading. Houses are led by girls in Years 10 and 12.
Reporting Each girl has a written report once a year and Parents' Evenings either once or twice a year, when parents can discuss their daughter's progress with the Form Tutor and subject staff. In addition, girls receive two grade sheets and a report each year. The Headmistress is always happy to make individual appointments with parents at any time during the school year.

General Information Religion
Clubs and Activities
In accordance with the Unitarian ideals of Channing's founders, every girl is encouraged to be strong in her own religious faith, and tolerant and understanding of the beliefs of others. Girls are introduced to different religions without any attempt being made to promote a particular faith. All girls attend Religious Education lessons and morning assembly, to which they often contribute.
There are many clubs, sports and musical events that take place at lunch time and after school. Most clubs for Year 7 and 8 are usually during the school lunch break. Below is an a example timetable of clubs. N.B. This is a typical programme. There are slight alterations and additions each term.
Behaviour and The Channing Promise We outline the standards of behaviour expected in our Code of Conduct, devised by the girls, called ‘The Channing Promise’, which is printed in every girl’s School Diary and stresses the importance of respect for one another, kindness, good manners and consideration, and is fundamental to our ethos. With high standards expected of girls, sanctions are only rarely employed. Occasionally, a detention may be given, requiring a girl to stay late after school. Girls are aware that any serious or persistent breach could lead to exclusion.

General Information Channing Association The popular and enthusiastic Channing Association is a vital part of the close relationship between home and school that we nurture. It is open to all parents and its primary purpose is to help them get to know each other and generally to develop our sense of partnership in the many activities the Association puts on, such as quiz nights, wine tasting and Salsa evenings. The AGM is held in the autumn term, usually in October. The Association organises a popular Fireworks Party in November, a Year 7 and 8 Disco for the girls each March and a Sixth Form Leavers' Summer Ball every year. On
Saturdays, the Channing Swimming group hires the Mallinson pool at Highgate School. In March, there is a sponsored Swimathon in aid of the school charity.
Alumnae Channing School is committed to re-establishing contact with an increasing number of alumnae to give them the opportunity to reconnect with the School, to attend reunions and events and to locate lost friends. We aim to enhance networking possibilities between alumnae and the current pupils who are looking to follow in their footsteps.
