What is a Chanticleer? A Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.

KRISTEN BAUER HEAD COACH 13TH SEASON OHIO STATE, 1993 210-176 OVERALL 105-67 BIG SOUTH RECORD

H E A D C O A C H

Kristen Bauer enters her 13th season as head coach at Coastal Carolina University following a 14-18 overall record and a fifth place finish in the Big South Conference in 2010. She is the winningest volleyball coach in Coastal Carolina history with 210 wins, against 176 losses, and owns a 105-67 career record in the Big South. In addition to her success on the court, Bauer's teams have produced in the classroom as well. Her team was publicly recognized by the NCAA for its Academic Progress Rate of 1,000, which is the highest number a team can receive and a Chanticleer has been the Big South Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year six times since 2000, including a run of three straight years with Jill Nyhof (2008 and '09) and Chelsy Kimes in 2010. Coastal has also had nine CoSIDA Academic All-District selections over the past seven seasons, getting at least one honoree each year. This past season Kimes and Megan Bickford made the prestigious squad. This past season, Kimes was also named first team All-Big South Conference for the third consecutive year, as well as being selected to the Big South All-Academic Team. She was additionally named Coastal Carolina's Female Athlete of the Year after being a three-time, first team All-Big South selection and a first team ESPN Academic AllDistrict member, as well as being named to the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award top 30 list. During her tenure, she has also been named Big South Volleyball Player of the Year as well as Big South Conference Tournament MVP. Kimes ranks second in school history in service aces, while becoming the all-time leader in kills and total attacks at Coastal Carolina University. Named to the Big South All-Freshman Team was Meghan Laffin after she was tabbed Big South Freshman of the Week twice. During the 2009 season Coastal Carolina won the 2009 Big South Tournament, defeating Liberty 3-1 in the Championship match. The Chants entered the tournament as a four seed. Coastal advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in school history after having gone in 1996 and 1998, while Bauer went for the first time as a head coach. The Chanticleers finished the 2009 season 20-14 overall and 10-6 in the Big South. Coastal Carolina defeated regular-season champion UNC Asheville in all three meetings during the season, including a 3-0 win in the Big South Tournament semifinals. Kimes was named first team All-Big South and Big South Tournament MVP, while teammates Megan Bickford and Sierra Livesay joined Kimes on the All-Tournament Team. Livesay also earned Big South Freshman of the Year accolades. Receiving the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award for the second straight season was Nyhof, who also earned Academic All-American honors. In 2008, Bauer's team posted a 27-9 overall record, her most successful season since being named head coach and finished as the regular season co-Champion in the Big South with a 13-3 record. The team advanced to the finals of the Big South tournament where they fell to Liberty. Nyhof earned the 2008 Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, and sophomore Kimes was named first team All-Big South. During the summer of 2008, Bauer traveled to Europe with "Bring It Promotions" to help coach a USA volleyball team. The team was comprised of collegiate players from several Division I schools. During her trip, her team had the opportunity to play the Switzerland National Team, where they split the series 1-1. Bauer's team finished their European tour in Croatia with a 12-team tournament between American and European squads. The team dominated the tournament and captured the gold medal. Under the direction of Bauer, the Chanticleers recorded a 15-17 overall record during the 2007 season. In the Big South, Coastal finished fourth with a 6-6 record and advanced to the Big South semifinals. Rookie standout Bickford was named to the Big South All-Conference and All-Freshman team, and was one of two players to appear in every game of the season. Fellow freshman Kimes was also selected to the Big South All-Freshman team, while Nyhof was named to the All-Academic team.

2011 Chanticleer Volleyball In 2006, Bauer saw her team play a program-record 128 games in 33 matches. The Chants posted a 10-23 overall record and tied for sixth in the Big South with a 4-10 record. Two players, senior Kristin Rinne and freshman Nyhof, appeared in all 128 games, while senior Laura Obert became Coastal’s all-time leader in block assists with 334. Both Nyhof and Obert earned Big South honors as Nyhof was selected to the All-Freshman Team and Obert was named Academic All-Conference. Obert also received her second Academic All-District Second Team honor. In 2005, Bauer’s team was 19-12 overall and finished Big South play with a record of 12-2, Coastal Carolina’s best record in the Big South since going 13-1 in 1996. The squad earned the program’s highest-ever NCAA Division I national ranking, finishing the season ranked 98th and in the top one-third for all Division I volleyball programs. Bauer received her second Big South Coach of the Year honor. Meanwhile, senior Katherine Jensen-Spencer collected Big South Player of the Year for her work on the court and Big South Scholar Athlete of the Year and Academic All-District Second Team accolades for her work in the classroom. Also under Bauer’s guidance, Jensen-Spencer and classmate Jennifer Hampton were named to the All-Big South First Team while Brett Starbuck earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team. From 2002-2004, Bauer's teams posted three consecutive 21-win seasons, as well as a pair of 11-3 conference records in 2002 and 2003. In 2004, Bauer had two first team All-Conference awardees in Jennifer Hampton and Jensen-Spencer. Off the court, Obert and Jensen-Spencer became the second Coastal Carolina volleyball players to be named Academic All-District. In 2003, five Chanticleers earned spots on the AllConference Teams. The 2002 season saw Hampton and senior Jeanne Lambert selected as the Big South's Freshman of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year, respectively. Lambert, who was sidelined during the previous season with an injury, also earned First Team All-Conference status with classmate Katie Knutson, while Hampton was a Second Team All-Conference and an All-Freshman Team selection. Without Lambert in 2001, the Chanticleers struggled to a 10-20 overall record and a sixth place Big South finish at 5-9. Despite the injuries, Coastal Carolina ranked fifth in the nation in digs, including Knutson's ninth-place national ranking in individual digs per game. After posting a 14-17 record in Bauer's inaugural season of 1999, Coastal improved to 18-14 in 2000. Coastal Carolina's improvement was noticeable throughout the Big South Conference as it improved from 6-8 to 11-3. The 2000 squad also set a school record for consecutive victories with a 12-match winning streak late in the season. As a result, Bauer received her first Big South Coach of the Year honor. That season, Bauer also saw Lambert earn Coastal's first Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Academic All-District and Academic All-America honors. Additionally, Lambert was selected at the Big South's Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A 1993 graduate of The Ohio State University, Bauer received her Bachelor of Arts degree in speech and hearing science. As a member of the Buckeyes' volleyball squad, she helped Ohio State capture the 1990 Big Ten Conference Championship. In addition to playing at Ohio State, Bauer also served as the head coach for the men's volleyball club team and served as the coordinator of several Ohio State University Women's Volleyball Camps throughout Ohio. Following graduation from Ohio State, the Buffalo, N.Y. native coached the varsity volleyball program at Nardin Academy Catholic High School from 1993 to 1995. During this same time, Bauer completed her master's work in audiology from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She was also selected as the head coach of the Western New York Senior All-Stars in 1994 and coached the Cheetah Volleyball Club’s 16 and under and 18 and under USVBA teams for two years. Bauer then served as the assistant women’s volleyball coach at East Tennessee State University from 1995 to 1998. During her final year of graduate school, she served as the head girls’ basketball and softball coach at University High School at East Tennessee State University. Bauer earned a Master’s of Arts in Teaching degree from East Tennessee State in 1999. Bauer has been honored many times as a player over the years. In her fifth year at the helm for the Coastal Carolina volleyball team, head coach Tammi McCaudy-Lee led the squad to its first Big South Tournament Championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 1996. McCaudy-Lee received Big South Coach of the Year honors for her success during the 1996 season. During the beginning of the season, the team started off with a school record six wins in a row, including four 3-0 shutouts. Coastal battled through some losses, but at the start of conference play, the team registered a then-school record 10-game win streak which was broken up by a 3-2 loss at UNC Greensboro. The UNC Greensboro match was the only loss for the Chants for the remainder of the season until the NCAA Tournament. Coastal posted a 13-1 record in league action, the best in the Big South. As the old adage goes, “It’s not how you start the season, but how you finish it,” and that could not be more true for the 2009 squad. The Chanticleers had a tough road, going 7-7 out of conference and 10-6 in the Big South to finish fourth in the league. However, the turning point in the season came on Senior Night after the team lost a disappointing match to Presbyterian. Looking like a new team, Coastal faced its first test in the opening round of the Big South Tournament as it beat High Point 3-2 in a tough five-set match.
