The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee voted to alter the holiday food drive competition they have held in the past, instead choosing to have each of the 18 Chanticleer athletic programs donate full meals. However, a total of 25 complete uncooked meals were actually put together and delivered to Pee Dee Elementary in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, with the extra seven meals to be dispersed to other students and their families by the elementary school. After transporting the food to the school, members of Coastal Carolina’s baseball, football, men’s golf, lacrosse, softball, volleyball, and track & field teams, along with former Director of Athletics Hunter Yurachek, spent time interacting with the respective families and assisting them in collecting their meals.
CHANTICLEERS COMPLETE FOURTH SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE
In October, the Department of Athletics completed its second annual Chants for Kids School Supply Drive, collecting approximately $3,000 worth of essential supplies for students at Pee Dee Elementary. Meghan Laffin and Lauren Alejo of the volleyball team; Jake Kane and Mike Morrison of the baseball team; and Reggie Nelson and Russel Kanner of the track team delivered the school supplies, including paper, pencils, hand sanitizer, crayons, markers and book bags. The Coastal student-athletes also spent time interacting with many of Pee Dee’s students, visiting 15 different classrooms and providing individual attention to various students. The donation marked the fourth consecutive School Supply Drive that has assisted Pee Dee Elementary School, a Title I school in Horry County that services approximately 800 students. The drive was part of the department’s continued partnership with Pee Dee Elementary, which was adopted by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee beginning with the 2011-12 academic year.

STUDENT-ATHLETES READ “THE GIVING TREE” TO LOCAL ELEMENTARY STUDENTS
Coastal Carolina University student-athletes took time out of their busy schedules on April 8 to read Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree” at 22 Horry County elementary schools as part of the United Way of Horry County Caring for Kindergarteners program. A total of 98 Chanticleer student-athletes representing each of Coastal’s 18 intercollegiate teams, plus members of the cheerleading squad along with coaches and athletic department staff members, read the timeless classic to 107 kindergarten classes. Coastal and United Way of Horry County have partnered for the Caring for Kindergarteners program since 2002 as a way of giving back to the community. Following the book reading, the kindergarten students put the book’s lesson into play by drawing pictures and creating their own individual greeting cards intended for elderly homebound senior citizens in Horry County. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS CONTINUES SUCCESSFUL ADOPT-A-CHANT CAMPAIGN The Coastal Carolina Department of Athletics and its Student-Athlete Advisory Committee recently completed its fourth annual Adopt-A-Chant Campaign, which helped to provide a happy holiday season for local children by donating such items as toys, clothes and shoes to Toys for Tots and students at Pee Dee Elementary. In all, Coastal Carolina Athletics was able to successfully adopt 50 children, a substantial increase from 31 children last year and six children in 2011. The 50 children submitted a Christmas wish list, and Coastal Carolina teams, as well as athletic administration, worked to gather toys, shoes and clothes to provide help for those who otherwise could not afford it. Some the toys gathered included bicycles, dolls, puzzles, books, games, toy cars and trucks, roller skates, footballs, basketballs, art supplies and video game systems. The adopted Chants also received athletic apparel from some of their favorite teams, including the Chanticleers, New York Giants and Miami Heat.
CHANTS FOR KIDS INITIATIVE CONTRIBUTES MORE THAN 3,200 HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE For the fourth straight year, the Department of Athletics has participated in The Chants for Kids Community Service Initiative which provides a means of assisting children locally, regionally and nationally through the efforts of student-athletes, administrators and coaches of Coastal Carolina University. The initiative seeks to enhance community relations by contributing more than 3,200 hours of volunteer service to a variety of organizations, while placing an emphasis on the well-being of today’s youth.

The event, which featured the race, an awards ceremony and a concert, drew around 500 registrants from the Grand Strand area. The race, which began on University Boulevard near the Boni Belle Hitting Facility, stretched 5,000 meters across Coastal Carolina’s campus, allowing the 398 runners a beautiful and unique view of the campus at night. The race ended inside Brooks Stadium where runners were greeted by cheering fans and spectators at the finish line. At the conclusion of the race, over 73 awards were handed out to the top finishers of 30 different groups, which were determined by age and gender.
