CHANTICLEERS CAPTURE 11TH BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE SASSER CUP

On the strength of eight Big South Championships won in 2014-15, Coastal Carolina won the Big South Sasser Cup for the 11th time in school history. In addition, the Chanticleer men won the Big South Men’s All-Sports Award for the fifth time in the last six years, while the women of Conway finished second in the league’s Women’s All-Sports Award for the fifth time since the award’s inception in 2003-04. Coastal Carolina’s men won the tournament title in soccer, while claiming the league title in football and the tournament championship in basketball, along with the regular season tennis title. Coastal’s men also finished runner-up in outdoor track & field and baseball. The Chanticleer women claimed the volleyball, indoor track & field and golf titles, along with the tennis regular season championship. Coastal’s women also finished runners-up in soccer, softball and outdoor track & field. Originally known as the Commissioner’s Cup, the Sasser Cup was renamed in 2000 to honor George F. “Buddy” Sasser, who served as the conference commissioner from 1989 to 1996, and as the Director of Athletics at Coastal Carolina from 1986-1989 and 1996-2000.

COASTAL CAROLINA ATHLETICS KEEPS ELITE COMPANY Coastal Carolina University was ONE OF ONLY FIVE NCAA Division I universities to have its football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball and baseball teams qualify for NCAA postseason play in 2014-15. Joining the Chanticleers were Louisville, Maryland, Notre Dame and UCLA. In addition to the aforementioned programs making the NCAA postseason, Coastal Carolina’s volleyball and women’s golf teams advanced to NCAA play. The Chants also had individuals from the sports of women’s cross country, men’s and women’s track & field along with men’s golf compete in their respective NCAA postseason events.

FOOTBALL EARNS FIRST NO. 1 NATIONAL RANKING, RETURNS TO NCAA FCS QUARTERFINALS Under third-year head coach JOE MOGLIA, the 2014 Coastal Carolina football team made school and Big South history as the team achieved the program’s, and conference’s, first-ever No. 1 National Ranking in the FCS Coaches poll. The Chanticleers, who were a top-10 team the entire season, held the top spot from Nov. 10 - Nov. 24. Coastal finished the 2014 season 12-2 to win its third straight Big South Championship and seventh in the program’s history. The Chanticleers earned the No. 7 seed in the NCAA FCS Championship where they advanced to the quarterfinals for the second straight season. Coastal ended its historic 2014 season as the fifth-ranked team in the nation, its highest end-of-year ranking to date. Coastal produced three All-Americans in QUINN BACKUS, CHAD HAMILTON and SHANE BALLARD, while Backus finished fourth for the Buck Buchanan Award and ALEX ROSS was seventh in the Walter Payton Award voting. In addition, Moglia, a three-time finalist for the national FCS Coach of the Year Award, was runner-up for this year’s Eddie Robinson Award. Backus (Defensive Player of the Year), Ross (Offensive Player of the Year) and Moglia (co-Coach of the Year) also took home the Big South’s top individual honors.

ATHLETIC HIGHLIGHTS

Coastal Carolina football player QUINN BACKUS was voted the Big South Conference Male Student-Athlete of the Year for the 2014-15 season by the league’s Athletics Directors, Senior Woman Administrators and Sports Information Directors. Backus is the second Chanticleer football player to win the award in as many years after Lorenzo Taliaferro captured the honor for the 2013-14 season. Backus led the Chants to a 12-2 record and a quarterfinal appearance in the NCAA Division I Football Championship, while racking up numerous individual honors along the way. He is Coastal Carolina’s most decorated football player as he was a three-time All-American as well as being the league’s first three-time Big South Defensive Player of the year and first player in conference history to lead the league in tackles three times. Backus was named the 2014 FCA Athletic Director’s Association Top Collegiate Linebacker and was a two-time Buck Buchanan FCS Defensive Player of the Year finalist, finishing fourth this past season. He finished his career with 414 tackles, 14th in NCAA FCS history, and 243 solo tackles, 10th in the NCAA FCS history.

MEN’S BASKETBALL REPEATS AS BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONS, RETURNS TO NCAA TOURNAMENT

The Coastal Carolina men’s basketball team defeated Winthrop in the title game of the VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Championship for the second straight year to make a return appearance in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. The Chanticleers once again entered the Tournament as a No. 16 seed, and were selected to meet the West Region’s top team, Wisconsin. WARREN GILLIS led Coastal with 22 points in the second round game in Omaha, Neb., but the Chants fell 86-72 to a Badger team that would eventually go on to play for the National Championship. In addition to the team’s success, several Chants reached individual achievements. Gillis was an All-Big South second team selection, became the 19th Coastal men’s basketball player to surpass 1,000 career points and was named to the Big South Championship All-Tournament Team. ELIJAH WILSON was named the Big South Tournament’s Most Valuable Player after averaging 20.3 points in Coastal’s three tournament games and head coach CLIFF ELLIS defeated UNC Asheville on Feb. 3, 2015, to become the only coach in NCAA Division I history to record 150 wins at four different schools.

BASEBALL RETURNS TO CONWAY, NCAA POSTSEASON

The Chanticleers returned to the campus of Coastal Carolina University in 2015 to play the inaugural season inside Springs Brooks Stadium where they finished with an impressive 21-12 record, including wins against No. 7 South Carolina, No. 11 North Carolina and Clemson. The Chanticleers also made their return to the NCAA postseason after being selected as the No. 2 seed in the College Station Regional hosted by Texas A&M. Coastal won its second game of the regional, defeating Texas Southern 4-1. Coastal had seven of its student-athletes earn All-Big South honors, including BOBBY HOLMES being named Freshman of the Year and second team All-Big South. Holmes, who finished the season with a 4-1 record in 27 appearances and a 2.90 ERA, was also named to the 2015 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team selected by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

MEN’S SOCCER WINS BACK-T0-BACK BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS, MAKES FOURTH STRAIGHT NCAA SECOND ROUND APPEARANCE

The Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team continued its run of dominance in the Big South as the Chanticleers captured their second straight conference tournament title and extended their streak of winning a regular season or tournament championship every year since 2009. The 2014 season also marked the fourth straight year that Coastal advanced to the second round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship after downing Florida Gulf Coast in the first round at CCU Soccer Stadium. The team earned a total of 12 All-Big South honors, with SHAWN McLAWS (Defensive) and RICKY GARBANZO (Attacking) taking the league’s top individual awards. The pair also earned NSCAA All-South Region honors along with UCHENNA UZO. McLaws was additionally named a College Soccer News All-American and was the 17th pick of the 2015 Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft.

HARDEMAN LEADS VOLLEYBALL TO BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP, NCAA TOURNAMENT The Coastal Carolina volleyball team posted a 25-7 record in 2014 — the third-most wins in program history — en route to a Big South Championship and a first round appearance in the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship. The Chanticleers were led by freshman outside hitter LEAH HARDEMAN, who became just the second student-athlete in Big South volleyball history to win the conference’s Player and Freshman of the Year awards in their first season. At the conclusion of the regular season, Hardeman ranked in the top five in kills per set, total kills and points per set among all NCAA Division I freshmen.

REGGIE NELSON ENDS CAREER AS TWO-TIME ALL-AMERICAN AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS Senior REGGIE NELSON made his second straight trip to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships where he finished tied for 20th in the high jump after clearing a height of 2.08m to earn honorable mention All-American honors. Nelson had also made the trip to Eugene, Ore., in 2014, when he tied for 19th in the high jump to earn All-American honors for the first time in his collegiate career. In addition to being a two-time All-American, Nelson ends his time as a Chanticleer as a two-time Big South Champion and five-time AllBig South honoree. His personal record of 2.16m is second-best in CCU history and tied for third-best in Big South history.

WOMEN’S GOLF CARDS RECORD-BREAKING SEASON The Coastal Carolina women’s golf team set a program record for event victories with four in 2014-15, and closed the season with a program-best team scoring average of 295.37. The Chanticleers also captured the program’s seventh Big South Championship overall, and fourth in the past seven years. The conference championship earned the Chants an automatic bid to the 2015 NCAA Raleigh Regional where Coastal placed ninth with a 54-hole score of 903. Individually, junior LENA SCHAEFFNER became the first Chanticleer to win three event titles in the same season. In addition to being the individual medalist at the Big South Championship, Schaeffner placed second at the NCAA Raleigh Regional to earn a berth to the 2015 NCAA National Championship, where she tied for 78th. Her season scoring average of 72.94 tops the CCU all-time scoring list. Head coach KATIE QUINNEY was named Big South Coach of the Year for the third time in her eight seasons at Coastal, and is now tied for the conference record for championships as a head coach with four.

DORN AND WHEELER MAKE THIRD STRAIGHT NCAA REGIONAL

For the third consecutive year, men’s golf team members ANDREW DORN and BEN WHEELER received at-large individual berths to compete in a NCAA Regional. Wheeler, the fourth seed, and Dorn, the sixth seed, were two of 10 individuals to earn a berth to the Chapel Hill Regional. Wheeler placed 79th with a 54-hole score of 221, while Dorn tied for 63rd after carding a 226. Wheeler closed his Chanticleer career fifth on the CCU all-time scoring list, while Dorn finished ninth. The pair helped Coastal advance to the NCAA Championship in 2013.

COASTAL TENNIS CLAIMS REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONSHIPS The Coastal Carolina men’s and women’s tennis teams each won Big South Regular Season Championships in 2015 as the two teams played their first season in their new home, the $2 million Coastal Carolina Tennis Complex. The Chanticleers defended their new courts well, posting a combined 12-1 record. The men closed the regular season with an 11-5, 6-1 record to claim the regular season title outright, while the women earned a share of the crown with a 14-5, 8-1 mark. Each of the programs ended the 2014-15 season ranked eighth in the Carolina Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

SOFTBALL SMASHES HOME RUN RECORDS

The Chanticleer softball team spent the 2015 season setting new standards for home runs, both in program and conference history. As a team, Coastal racked up 84 homers during the year to set a new Big South record. Eleven different Chants contributed to the total with four reaching double-digits. Individually, MORGAN NOAD established a new single-season program mark by hitting 22. Teammate KORY HAYDEN, the program’s all-time leader, briefly held the Big South’s career mark after hitting the 59th of her career on April 11 against Radford. Hayden finished her career as a Chant with 61, second-most in conference history.

INDOOR TRACK RUNS AWAY WITH BIG SOUTH THREE-PEAT The Coastal Carolina women’s indoor track & field team claimed the 2015 Big South Championship to record the program’s second indoor three-peat, eighth conference title overall and seventh conference title in the last 10 years. At the conclusion of the championship meet, JESSICA GELIBERT was named Most Outstanding Track Athlete while AMIRAH AL BAYYINAH was selected the Most Outstanding Field Athlete. In total, 12 Chanticleer student-athletes received AllBig South honors while Coastal captured 11 different event championships.

McLaws was the selected in the third round of the 2015 Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft. An All-American and the Big South Defensive Player of the Year in 2014, McLaws helped the Chanticleers to four NCAA Tournaments, three Big South regular season championships and two tournament championships.

Schroeder was selected in the eighth round by the Chicago White Sox in the 2015 Major League Baseball FirstYear Player Draft. In his lone season at Coastal, Schroeder helped the Chants to the NCAA postseason by hitting 13 home runs, drawing 33 walks, batting .230 and posting a .370 on base percentage.

• Named to the 2015 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team by Collegiate Baseball. • Was named the 2015 Big South Freshman of the Year and was tabbed second team All-Big South. • Posted a 4-1 record in 27 appearances with four saves and a 2.90 ERA. • In 23 relief appearances, posted a 1.20 ERA while going 4-0 with four saves, including one versus Texas Southern in the NCAA College Station Regional. • Earned a win versus then No. 7 Florida State after pitching 6.0 scoreless and hitless innings, for which he was named Big South Pitcher of the Week.

A total of 70 Chanticleer student-athletes received their degrees from Coastal Carolina University in 2014-15: 50 in the May commencement and 20 in the December commencement. In addition, four student-athletes earned master’s degrees from the University. Maddie Phillips (women’s soccer) graduated magna cum laude and at the top of the marketing class. Big South Conference Presidential Also, Jake Kane (baseball) and Imir Sanders (football) graduated cum laude and at the top of the sociology Honor Roll members and psychology classes, respectively. The Coastal Carolina MEN’S AND WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY, MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SOCCER, MEN’S GOLF, FOOTBALL, MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TRACK & Coastal Carolina MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY and WOMEN’S GOLF teams received FIELD and MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TENNIS teams were recognized for their public recognition from the NCAA for top academic performance for its multi- excellence in the classroom by their respective coaches associations. year Academic Progress Rate scores of 1,000. The Chanticleer men’s cross country program was the only Big South men’s cross county team to receive APR recognition, while the women’s golf program joined Campbell and Gardner-Webb as the only three programs in the Big South to have its women’s golf team ranked in the top 10 percent in the APR scores. The public recognition was the third straight for women’s golf and the first for men’s cross country.

COASTAL STUDENT-ATHLETE ACADEMIC FACTS • For the 2014-15 academic year, 229 Coastal Carolina student-athletes posted at least a 3.0 GPA to earn recognition on the Big South Presidential Honor Roll. • In fall 2014, 27 student-athletes posted a perfect 4.0 GPA, earning CCU President’s Honor Roll honors, while 38 accomplished the feat for spring 2015. • In the fall of 2014, 105 student-athletes earned Dean’s List recognition (at least a 3.5 GPA for the semester), while 96 student-athletes recorded Dean’s List recognitions in spring 2015. • Overall, the mean cumulative GPA for student-athletes in 2014-15 was 3.136, as compared to 2.932 for general degree-seeking students. • The cumulative GPA for all women’s teams was 3.324, compared to 3.053 for general female degree-seeking students. The cumulative GPA for all men’s teams was 3.017, compared to 2.795 for general male degree-seeking students. • Of Coastal’s 415 student-athletes, 229 (55.1 percent) posted a GPA between 3.0-4.0 for the 2014-15 academic year. • All 10 women’s sports programs have team cumulative GPAs above 3.0 and six of eight men’s sports programs (baseball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis and track) have team cumulative GPAs over 3.0. • Coastal Carolina posted a 2013-14 NCAA GSR (Graduation Success Rate, which tracks the graduation rates beginning with the freshman class of 2007) of 83 percent.

ADOPT-A-CHANT CHRISTMAS CAMPAIGN AGAIN SPREADS HOLIDAY JOY

For the fifth consecutive year, SAAC’s Adopt-A-Chant Christmas Campaign was held in December. The campaign’s 2014 edition provided a happier holiday season for 20 children of Pee Dee Elementary. Items valuing approximately $3,000 and ranging from bicycles and tablets to clothes and stocking stuffers were donated by student-athletes, coaches and administrators in the Department of Athletics and delivered to the children, whose families would otherwise be unable to afford them.

FIFTH SAAC SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE HELD

Coastal Carolina University student-athletes returned to Pee Dee Elementary to once again deliver school supplies donated by the Coastal Carolina Department of Athletics as part of its annual SAAC School Supply Drive. Juniors Mike Morrison and Tyler Chadwick of the baseball team and junior Jessica Gelibert of the women’s track and field team delivered the items to the school and spent time in numerous classrooms interacting with many of the students. Items provided included backpacks, binders, folders, notebooks, pencil boxes, crayons, dry erase markers and glue sticks. The donation marked the fifth consecutive School Supply Drive that has assisted Pee Dee Elementary School, a Title I school in Horry County that services approximately 800 students. Title I is the largest federal assistance program for the nation’s schools. The goal of Title I is to provide a high-quality education for every child. The program provides extra help to students who are furthest from meeting the standards the state has set for all children. Title I serves children through school-wide programs and targeted assistance programs. The programs generally offer smaller classes, additional teachers and assistants, training for staff, extra time for instruction, and mentoring.

Coastal Carolina student-athletes took the time to give back to the community by reading Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree” to 22 Horry County elementary schools as part of the United Way of Horry County Caring for Kindergarteners program. A total of 95 Chanticleer student-athletes among Coastal’s 18 intercollegiate athlete programs, along with members of the cheerleading team, coaches and athletic administrators, participated in reading the timeless classic to 103 kindergarten classes. Upon completing the book, the young students were able to put the lessons they learned on display by drawing pictures and creating their own greeting cards to be distributed to elderly, homebound citizens throughout Horry County. The kindergarteners’ cards will be attached to one of several hundred gift baskets intended for the senior shut-ins as part of the annual “Make Someone’s May Day” program, now in its 14th year. The event extended a partnership between Coastal Carolina University and the United Way of Horry County that has existed since 2002 as a means of giving back to the community.

RECORD TURNOUT: OVER 200 YOUTHS PARTICIPATE IN BASEBALL’S CLINIC

The Coastal Carolina baseball program hosted its annual free clinic in January, instructing a record turnout of more than 200 6 to 12 year olds at the Ripken Experience Complex. The three-hour camp, made possible with help from the Mike Pruitt Foundation for the Advancement of Youth Baseball in Horry County, focused on hitting, base running, fielding and throwing fundamentals. “We could not be more pleased with the turnout,” said head coach Gary Gilmore. “We certainly hope these kids can take away some fundamentals to help them, but the most important thing is that these kids have fun.”

SOFTBALL GOES RED FOR WOMEN WITH BARRAGE OF HOME RUNS

In addition to volunteering at the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk in Myrtle Beach in October, the Coastal Carolina softball team took part in the organization’s Go Red for Women program during the 2015 season. The campaign to raise awareness and money to combat heart disease, the number one killer of women in the United States, gave the public an opportunity to join head coach Kelley Green and the rest of the program in the fight with flat donations or by pledging a dollar amount for each home run hit by a Coastal player during the season. The Chanticleers finished the year with a Big South-record 84 homers, and a total of over $2,000 was raised for the cause.

TRACK TEAMS RUN, JUMP AND THROW WITH HOME SCHOOLERS The Coastal Carolina University men’s and women’s track and field programs held their traditional “Run, Jump and Throw with the Chants” event for more than 50 home school students during an October afternoon. Home-schooled children ranging in ages from 5 to 17 who regularly take part in physical education classes through the University got the opportunity to experience various track and field events and receive instruction on the basic fundamentals from Coastal Carolina student-athletes and coaches. The event started with a warm-up jog around the track followed by stretching exercises. Participants were then divided up into groups based on their ages and rotated among stations for relay running, hurdles, long jump, high jump and the javelin. The track and field programs have held numerous Run, Jump and Throw events each year since 2009 with students from Pee Dee Elementary.

THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN The baseball team returned to campus and a new state-of-the-art facility in Springs Brooks Stadium for the start of the 2015 season, following a renovation that kept the old playing surface intact, but improved the surrounding amenities. The ballpark includes new grandstands, concession stands, a team store, coaches’ offices, student-athlete locker rooms and lounges, a team meeting space, a stateof-the-art scoreboard, an athletic training facility, a laundry facility and premium fan and media areas. Additionally, the 33,000-square foot project expanded the former 850-seat Watson Stadium into the new 2,500-seat Springs Brooks Stadium. As a result of grass berms down both foul lines and a boardwalk around the outfield wall, the stadium has the potenital to accommodate between 5,000-6,000 fans for events like an NCAA

postseason tournament. The stadium officially opened on Feb. 13 as Coastal Carolina defeated Old Dominion 4-0 as part of the annual Caravelle Resort Tournament. Prior to the game, head coach Gary Gilmore threw out the ceremonial first pitch and kissed home plate. “This has been a day that I have dreamed about for a long, long time,” Gilmore said after the season-opening win. “This stadium, it’s a culmination of a lot of dreaming, a lot of hard work and a lot of sweat by a whole lot of people. It’s not just me. I’m a very blessed man.” During their first season in the new ballpark, the Chanticleers posted a 21-12 home record with wins over the likes of thenNo. 11 North Carolina, Clemson and then-No. 7 South Carolina. Additionally, the ballpark played host to the two largest regularseason, on-campus crowds in school history

with a capacity crowd of 3,086 vs. South Carolina and a standing-room-only crowd of 2,825 vs. Clemson. The Chanticleers ended the regular season ranked 42nd in the NCAA in attendance. Coastal Carolina finished the season runner-up in the Big South Conference Championship, earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament with a RPI of 18 and appeared as the No. 2 seed in the College Station Regional hosted by Texas A&M.

TEAL TURF INSTALLATION AT BROOKS STADIUM COMPLETED

The Coastal Carolina football and women’s lacrosse programs will compete on a new playing surface beginning with the 2015-16 academic year after Benton Field at Brooks Stadium received a colorful facelift this spring. The turf installation project began in January with the stripping of the natural grass and continued with the installation of drainage systems through the months of February and March. The first pieces of turf were then laid on April 2 and the project was completed later that month. The project had a budget of $1.2 million and will give the athletic programs more versatility and options for both practice and game days. Artificial turf versus a grass playing surface will help alleviate practice space challenges as well as provide a safe and durable option if there is inclement weather. Also, the quality of the playing surface will remain consistent throughout several seasons including postseason football and, in the spring, women’s lacrosse, which is typically contested on artificial turf. The more versatile surface will also provide the University the opportunity to host non-athletic special events. Medallion Athletic Products of Mooresville, N.C., partnered with Shaw Sports Turf for the project contract after being selected through the State of S.C. procurement process.

TENNIS CHRISTENS NEW COMPLEX The men’s and women’s tennis programs moved into the Coastal Carolina Tennis Complex to start the 2015 season and combined to post a 12-1 home record while winning a pair of regular season Big South Conference Championships. The new facility consists of 12 US Open-style courts surrounded by bleachers and rocking chairs for the public’s viewing pleasure. Additionally, the $2 million complex includes lighting, LED scoreboards, a state-ofthe-art speaker system, equipment storage areas, concessions, restrooms and a 3,000-square-foot clubhouse with coaches’ offices, student-athlete locker rooms and a lounge.

The facility, which opened in March 2015, allows the Department of Athletics in conjunction with Aramark Food Services to offer nutritious meal options for student-athletes. Proper nutrition is key to improving athletic performance, and also plays a major role in recovering from activity and injury.

The Coastal Carolina Department of Athletics honored its top performers of the 2014-2015 season at the annual StudentAthlete Excellence Awards, April 27, hosted by the members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at The HTC Center. Coastal Carolina student-athletes Ruby Durham (women’s track & field) and Kacey Kelley (women’s soccer) served as the masters of ceremony, and the program included remarks from Director of Athletics Matt Hogue, an all-sports highlight video and a senior recognition video. Coastal also recognized its academic successes, both individual and team. QUINN BACKUS (football), a three-time All-American, was named the Presidential Student-Athlete of the Year, presented each year to the singular Coastal Carolina University student-athlete who displays extraordinary achievements in academics, athletics, community service and leadership. Awards were presented to LILY YEDNOCK (lacrosse) as the Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year and to RIDGE ROBINSON (men’s soccer) as the Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, based on their cumulative GPAs. LENA SCHAEFFNER (women’s golf) was named the Female Athlete of the Year, while BACKUS (football) was honored as the Male Athlete of the Year for their significant contributions to their teams and to Chanticleer Athletics. SHIVAUGHN WIGGINS (men’s basketball) was named the Male Newcomer of the Year, while LEAH HARDEMAN (volleyball) was named the Female Newcomer of the Year. New to this year’s banquet was the awarding of the Comeback Team and Athlete of the Year award. The BASEBALL team was named the Comeback Team of the Year, while baseball’s ALEX CUNNINGHAM was voted the Comeback Athlete of the Year. KIANA QUOLAS (softball), RUBY DURHAM (women’s track & field) and REGGIE NELSON (men’s track & field) garnered the National Strength and Conditioning Athletes of the Year awards. The honor recognizes collegiate student-athletes whose athletic accomplishments, in the opinion of their strength coach, reflect dedication to strength and conditioning. The Linda C. Vereen Academic Excellence Award was awarded to the WOMEN’S TENNIS team, representing the Coastal Carolina University Department of Athletics with the highest combined grade point average. The program boasts a 3.726 cumulative GPA. CHRIS POWERS, an adjunct professor of history in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, was named this year’s Student-Athlete Faculty Member of the Year, while Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Support Services SAMANTHA KOST was named the Athletics Staff Member of the Year. The award portion of the banquet closed with the awarding of the Savannah Thompson Humanitarian Award. The award, which recognizes individuals in the Coastal Carolina community who make a difference and inspire those around them, was presented to MEGAN HOVERMAN.

• Letitia Saayman and Kyla van Graan advanced to the NCAA Championship, becoming the first Chanticleers to do so since 2007, and the sixth and seventh overall. • Posted highest regular-season finish since 2010, defeated UNC Asheville 2-0 to advance to the Big South Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2008 and posted 11 wins, the most since 2008. • Kacey Kelley became the second Chanticleer in program history to be named Big South Player of the Year as she earned the conference’s attacking honor. • Kelley was also the second Coastal woman to earn All-Region honors, and the first by the NSCAA, as she was selected to the Southeast Region’s third team. The senior posted the third-most single season goals (11) and sixth-most points (26) totals in program history. • Paul Hogan was named Big South Coach of the Year, the third different Chanticleer coach to earn that honor, after leading the team to its third straight double-digit win season. • Amber Adams joined Kelley on the All-Big South first team, while Rylie Johnson and Sam Patterson were selected to the second team. • For the third straight year, the Chanticleers handed the conference’s eventual regular-season champion its only league loss of the season as they shut out Liberty 1-0.

EXPERIENCE: THIRD YEAR AT COASTAL CAROLINA

NCAA Tournament First Round - Chapel Hill Regional • Captured the 2014 Big South Tournament Championship with a fifth-set rally over No. 1 seed Radford to advance to the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship for the first time since 2009, and fourth time in the program’s history. The Chanticleers fell to Southern Cal in the first round of the tournament. • Coastal’s 25-7 overall record in 2014 marked the program’s third-highest win total in a season. • Leah Hardeman became just the second student-athlete in Big South volleyball history to be named the conference’s Player and Freshman of the Year. Hardeman was also a first team All-Big South and All-Freshman team selection, and set a Coastal Carolina volleyball record by earning the conference’s Freshman of the Week award five times during the season. • Junior middle blocker Eszter Nagy was also a first team All-Big South selection, while senior setter Sam Skyrd was named Honorable Mention All-Big South and senior libero Jenna Orner was placed on the conference’s All-Academic Team. • Senior outside hitter Katie Martin was named MVP of the Big South Championship. • On Oct. 21, Coastal won its first-ever volleyball match against South Carolina with a three-game sweep of the Gamecocks at The HTC Center. Coastal finished 2-0 against SEC teams in 2014, also defeating Tennessee 3-1. • Coastal was crowned champions of the Jacksonville Marriott Classic and Coastal Carolina Invitational. Sam Skryd was named Tournament MVP for the former, while Jenna Orner received the same honor for the latter. • Jozsef Forman became Coastal’s first volleyball coach to take the Chanticleers to the Big South championship match in each of his first three seasons. He also became Coastal’s fastest volleyball coach to reach 50 career wins after defeating Gardner-Webb on Oct. 24 in his 81st match.

• Won the Big South Championship for the third straight year to record the second three-peat in program history. The title was the program’s eighth indoor title overall and seventh in the last 10 years. • Jessica Gelibert and Amirah Al-Bayyinah were named the meet’s Most Outstanding Track and Most Outstanding Field Athletes, respectively. Gelibert won the 400 meters and 60-meter hurdles, while AlBayyinah took the long jump and triple jump crowns • Letitia Saayman broke her own meet record and set a new program mark while winning the 5,000 meters, while Aynslee van Graan captured the mile run title and set a new school record in the event earlier in the season. • A Chanticleer earned Big South Conference weekly honors following each of the team’s four regularseason meets, with four student-athletes combining for five total awards.

NCAA Tournament Round of 64 • Won its second Big South Tournament title in as many years, marking the second time in program history the Chants had won back-to-back tournament championships (1990 and 1991). • Advanced to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Round of 64. • Head coach Cliff Ellis became the first coach in NCAA Division I history to win 150-plus games at four different universities with the Chants’ 68-56 victory over UNC Asheville on Feb. 3. • The Chants captured 20-plus wins for the fourth time under head coach Cliff Ellis and the 12th in program history. • Senior guard Warren Gillis finished his career ranked 10th on the Coastal Carolina all-time list with 1,352 career points. He also ranks second all-time in games played (125), 10th in field goals attempted (1,081), second in free throws made (305) and sixth in steals (164). • Set the Coastal Carolina team single season rebound mark with a +8.1 margin.

Also ranked in the top five in the Big South in scoring margin, free throw percentage, field goal percentage and rebounding. • Set the program records for most points scored in a game and largest margin of victory with a 121-32 win over Barber-Scotia on Nov. 19. • Sophomore Alexis Robinson set the Coastal Carolina single-game rebounding record with 19 in a 69-62 win over Pfeiffer on Nov. 16. • AJ Jordan was named first team All-Big South and All-Academic, while Jas Adams was an All-Freshman Team selection. • Jordan closed the season as the Big South’s leading scorer, averaging 16.9 points per game overall and 18.5 points per game against conference opponents. • Jordan became the 13th Chanticleer in Coastal Carolina women’s basketball history to score career 1,000 points, which she accomplished in a 21-point performance against IPFW on Nov. 25. • Jordan ended her senior season ranked in the top 10 in program history in several career categories including: first in games played, second in minutes, third in field goals made and attempted, fourth in free throw percentage, sixth in points, eighth in free throws made and 10th in free throws attempted.

NCAA Championship • Set program record for event victories with four and team scoring average (295.37). • Won the program’s seventh overall and fourth Big South Conference championship in the last seven years. • Placed ninth at the 2015 NCAA Raleigh Regional with a 54-hole score of 903. • Lena Schaeffner, who became the first Chanticleer to win three event titles in the same season, placed second at the NCAA Raleigh Regional and earned an individual berth to the 2015 NCAA National Championship where she tied for 78th. • Schaeffner’s season scoring average of 72.94 tops the CCU all-time list, while her career scoring average of 74.65 ranks second. Malene Krolboll Hansen’s 73.85 season scoring average ranks fifth-best all-time. • Schaeffner (Palmetto Intercollegiate) and fellow junior Marissa Hinchman (JU Classic) won back-to-back tournaments in the fall to lead the Chants to the team titles as well. • Katie Quinney was named the Big South Coach of the Year for the third time in her eight seasons at Coastal Carolina. Quinney also tied the Big South record for championship wins with four.

• Finished second at the 2015 Big South Conference Championships, only 11.5 points behind Liberty. • Qualified five individuals including Amirah Al-Bayyinah (long jump), Christina Davis (400m hurdles), Jessica Gelibert (100m hurdles, 400m hurdles), Letitia Saayman (10,000m) and Chloe White (javelin) for a school-record six qualifications at the NCAA East Preliminary Round. • Had 13 individuals earn a total of 23 all-conference honors, including individual conference titles in the 400m hurdles, 5000m, 10000m, high jump and 4x400 relay. • Broke three school records including the 10000m (Letitia Saayman - 34:33.85), 100m hurdles (Jessica Gelibert - 13.39 seconds) and javelin (Chloe White - 47.22m/154-11). • Won the team title at the Big South Challenge Cup hosted by Campbell University after totaling 160 points in 15 scored events. High Point finished second with 128 points.

• Finished second at the 2015 Big South Conference Championships, the team’s eighth runner-up finish in the last nine seasons. • Qualified five individuals including Kahlim Denmark (100m), Alexander Hass (100m, 200m), Reggie Nelson (high jump), Therius Styles (200m), Desmond Wallace (110m hurdles) and its 4x100 relay team for a school-record seven qualifications at the NCAA East Preliminary Round. • Reggie Nelson, who was named the Big South Male Field Athlete of the Year, advanced to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., for the second consecutive season after placing T-7th in the high jump at the NCAA East Preliminary Round, where he finished T-20th and earned honorable mention All-American honors. • Had 11 individuals earn a total of 20 all-conference honors, including individual conference titles in the 200m, 110m hurdles, high jump, 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay. • Broke three school records including the 100m (Alexander Hass - 10.52 seconds), 110m hurdles (Desmond Wallace - 13.80 seconds) and 4x200 relay (1:24.34), while also matching the school record in the 200m (Alexander Hass - 21.18 seconds).

• Andrew Dorn and Ben Wheeler played in their third NCAA Regional. • Andrew Dorn and Ben Wheeler were selected to play in the prestigious Jones Cup. • For the second year in a row, Andrew Dorn was an individual medalist, going to a playoff at Hootie @ Bulls Bay. • Ben Wheeler posted the sixth-best, single-season scoring average in CCU history with a 72.43 stroke average. Andrew Dorn finished with the 14th-best CCU single-season scoring average (72.90). • Ben Wheeler ended his career fifth on the CCU all-time scoring list with a career stroke average of 73.58 while Dorn’s 73.93 career stroke average is ninth. • Andrew Dorn finished his career a three-time All-Big South honoree, joining 11 other Chants to be at least a three-time selection.

The Chanticleers went undefeated with a 6-0 record on their new courts in 2015. • Finished the season ranked eighth in the Carolina Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, a program best. • Philippe Tsangarides and Kaue Pereira were named All-Big South singles and doubles selections. The two were also named the Big South No. 1 Doubles Flight Champion as the Chanticleers’ top pairing ended conference play with a perfect 7-0 record. • Tsangarides also ended the season ranked among the Carolina Region’s top 20 singles players for the second straight year, closing 2014-15 at #19. • Jabor Al-Mutawa represented his country of Qatar at the 2014 Asian Games and faced off against World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the Qatar Open.

• Defeated Campbell 15-11 (OT) in the Big South Lacrosse Championship quarterfinal round to earn the program’s first postseason victory, later appearing in its first semifinal game vs. Liberty. • The team’s 11 wins more than doubled its win totals from each of the previous two seasons. • Ended the season as one of two Big South teams, along with Winthrop, to rank in the top half of the conference in both scoring offense (4th - 12.41) and scoring defense (2nd - 9.77). • Junior defender Maddy Ciardi became the program’s first player of the year recipient as she was named the Big South Defensive Player of the Year by the league’s head coaches. She led the team in caused turnovers (23) and ranked second in ground balls (30). • Senior attack Jen Cosgrove set single-season program records for points scored (57) and goals (47). She totaled 26 points on 23 goals in her final four games as a Chanticleer, including a pair of program-best, eight-point performances vs. Campbell. • Seven student-athletes received all-conference recognition, tying Liberty for the most by a Big South institution this season.

33-24 (16-7) | Second • Runner-up in the Big South during the regular-season, giving the program its fourth straight top-two finish in the conference, and advanced to the tournament semifinals for the fifth consecutive year. • The Chanticleers set a new Big South Conference record for home runs in a season with 84, a total that ranked 14th in the nation. • Morgan Noad hit 22 home runs to break the program’s single-season record previously held by Meagen Johnson. • Kory Hayden earned her fourth straight selection to the All-Big South first team. She was joined on the first team by Noad and Bri Chiusano. Kiana Quolas and Amanda Daneker were named to the second team, while Kelsey Dominik was an honorable mention selection. • Hayden broke the Big South career home run record with her 59th on April 11, before concluding her career second in conference history in homers (61)and third in RBIs (189). • Quolas wrapped up her four-year run at Coastal ranked second in conference history in wins (91) — behind fellow Chanticleer Michelle Hall — and third in complete games (101).

EXPERIENCE: 20TH YEAR AT COASTAL CAROLINA

NCAA College Station Regional • Coastal Carolina returned to campus, finishing 42nd nationally in attendance, and returned to prominence on the national scene. They were ranked in each of the last eight weeks of the regular season and were the #2 seed at the NCAA College Station Regional. • Coastal was one of eight teams to have both an RPI and Strength of Schedule among the nation’s top 20. • Coastal faced eight teams that advanced to an NCAA Regional, was 6-3 versus the teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and 1-1 versus the Southeastern Conference. Coastal defeated Georgia Tech, North Carolina State, North Carolina, Clemson and Wake Forest. The Chants lost at North Carolina then dropped the first two games of a weekend series at Florida State before rallying to win game three. Coastal beat South Carolina, 9-8, in 11-innings and fell 8-1 to Texas A&M in the NCAA Regional to close the season. • On six occasions this season, Coastal Carolina lost two straight games but rallied to avoid a three-game setback each time. • This year marked the 26th Big South Championship to be contested and, by reaching the final this season, Coastal has played in 18 title games. Coastal has won 13 titles (‘86 • ‘91 • ‘92 • ‘01 • ‘02 • ‘03 • ‘04 • ‘07 • ‘08 • ‘09 • ‘10 • ‘11 • ‘12) and been runner-up five times (‘90 • ‘98 • ‘99 • ‘05 • ‘15). • With a 13-2 win versus Longwood in game two of that series, Coastal’s Gary Gilmore became the first Big South baseball coach to win 300 league games. In 20 years, he is now 310-131, a .703 winning percentage, versus Big South foes. • Coastal and Mercer were the only two teams to have at least 60 home runs and 60 sacrifice bunts. Coastal hit 62 home runs (11th-best in the NCAA) and laid down 63 sac bunts (17th). Mercer hit 66 home runs (sixth) and had 79 sac bunts (3rd). • Coastal finished the season second in the NCAA by turning 66 double plays. CCU also ranked 10th nationally in sacrifice flies (33), 21st in walks drawn (269) and 22nd in runs scored (405).
