2015 CHANTICLEER VOLLEYBALL • 1
The Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.

Coastal Carolina University Coastal Carolina University is a dynamic, public comprehensive liberal arts institution located in Conway, just minutes from the resort area of Myrtle Beach, S.C. The University offers 66 areas of study toward the baccalaureate degree and seven master’s degree programs in accountancy, business administration, education, marine and wetland studies, and writing. Ten new undergraduate degree programs include biochemistry, economics, graphic design, information systems, intelligence and national security, musical theatre, theatre arts, as well as criminology, health and aging, and social justice tracks in sociology. The University will begin offering its first doctoral program – the Ph.D. in Coastal and Marine Systems Science – in Fall 2014. More than 9,400 students from across the country and the world interact with a world-class faculty, and enjoy a nationally competitive NCAA I athletic program, an inspiring cultural calendar, and a tradition of community interaction that is fueled by more than 120 student clubs and organizations. One of the hallmarks of a Coastal Carolina education is the close faculty attention students receive, plus the opportunities CCU provides for meaningful, hands-on research and learning experiences beyond the classroom. Last year, CCU began a comprehensive universitywide initiative focusing on experiential learning, designed to transform our academic program by engaging students in goal-oriented classroom, internship and study-abroad activities. The University comprises 72 main buildings on 630 acres including the Coastal Science Center and the Burroughs & Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland Studies, located on the East Campus in the Atlantic Center on U.S. 501, and The General James Hackler Golf Course at Coastal Carolina University, a public 18-hole golf facility located adjacent to the campus. The University also offers courses at the Litchfield Higher Education Center and the Myrtle Beach Education Center. A 1,062-acre tract, including a portion of Waties Island, provides a natural laboratory for extensive study in marine science and wetlands biology on an Atlantic coast barrier island. With an economic impact of $440 million locally and $498 million on the State of South Carolina, CCU is the fastest growing university in the Southeast. Coastal Carolina University was founded in 1954, became an independent university in 1993 and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE
For more than 30 years, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by notable accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” On April 24, 1983, Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South and less than four months later on August 21, the Big South Conference was formed when Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop committed to the new League. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid -- an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing against some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 18 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to unprecedented new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during his tenure, as he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and women’s lacrosse for the first
time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track & field in 1997 and women’s lacrosse in 2013. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership with double-digit member institutions for six consecutive years. Recent additions include High Point, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian College and Longwood, plus the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live video streaming event in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 800 annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. Since 2000, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, has had more than 325 All-Americans, has reached the quarterfinals in the FCS Playoffs as well as the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball; has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf; had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship eight times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection; had the first women’s golf program advance to the national finals; had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country; had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team five consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice; has received two at-large playoff berths in the Football Championship Subdivision since 2006; has had nine NFL Draft picks; and has had two institutions finish in the top 10 in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships -- including the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event (fifth in 2007). In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four times -- including a national seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifthyear of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run); Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reached the postseason for the first

Hungarian University of Physical Education, 1989 Fourth season at Coastal Carolina • 58-33 Sixth season overall • 116-72
Jozsef Forman, who was named head coach at Coastal Carolina on January 18, 2012, is entering his fourth season at the helm of the Chanticleer volleyball team. Forman has recorded several program-firsts in his three years leading the Chanticleers. In addition to being the program’s first coach to achieve a .500 record or higher in each of his first three seasons, Forman became the first head coach in Coastal history, and fourth in Big South history, to take the volleyball program to three straight Big South championship matches. He also became Coastal’s fastest coach to reach 50 wins, achieving the feat against Gardner-Webb on Oct. 24, 2014 in just his 81st match. The 2014 season proved to be a breakout year for Forman and the Chanticleers. Coastal won 25 matches (third-most in program history) en route to its first Big South Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance since 2009. The Chants, who entered the Big South Tournament as the second seed, knocked off Gardner-Webb and High Point before rallying to defeat Radford in the fifth set in the championship match. Under Forman’s guidance, Leah Hardeman became just the second student-athlete in Big South history to be named the conference’s Player and Freshman of the Year, while three Coastal student-athletes were named All-Big South and Katie Martin was named the conference’s Tournament MVP. On Oct. 21, Forman led Coastal to its firstever victory over in-state rival South Carolina in a three-game sweep of the Gamecocks at The HTC Center. In 2013, Forman led the Chants to their second consecutive appearance in the Big South championship after finishing the regular season in second place with a 10-4 conference record while going 19-12 overall. Included in those 19 wins was a 3-1 decision over ACC member Georgia Tech at the Lady Vol Invitational. Under Forman’s direction, Coastal had two first team all-conference selections for the first time since 2005 and four overall selections for the first time since 2003. Additionally, Lauren Alejo finished her Coastal career fourth all-time in the CCU record book with 2,919 assists, and Lindsay Gill finished third all-time in CCU history with 1,503 digs. In his first season at the helm of the CCU volleyball program in 2012, Forman helped turn around a team that had finished 5-9 in Big South play and dropped out of the first round of the conference tournament in 2011. Forman’s inaugural season saw Coastal finish 14-14 overall, but its 10-4 conference record marked the program’s first 10-win season in Big South play since 2009. Forman had one player named first team All-Big South, two selected to the Big South AllFreshman team and one placed on the Big South All-Academic Team. Prior to being named the head volleyball coach of Coastal Carolina, Forman served as the associate head coach at Auburn University. The Tigers finished the 2010 season ranked 42nd in the RPI after putting together a program-best 21 wins and reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time. The Tigers also posted a season-best 11 Southeastern Conference wins that season. Forman was named Auburn’s interim head coach in the spring of 2011 and remained on the staff under new head coach Rick Nold. Forman served as the head volleyball coach at the University of New Orleans for three seasons (2008-10), posting a 58-39 record. He recorded a season-best 13 Sun Belt Conference wins during the 2008 season, finishing 22-10 overall and 13-5 in league play. During the 2009 season, the University of New Orleans volleyball team earned its first ever Sun Belt West Division Championship after compiling a 12-6 conference record and a 20-13 overall record. The Privateers earned a GPA above 3.0 each of the three years that Forman was head coach. While at the University of New Orleans, Forman had the opportunity to be the assistant coach of the 2008 USA/Bring It Promotions u20 Development Team that played in the European Global Games in Pula, Croatia, and Italy. Before being named the head coach of the University of New Orleans, Forman served as the first assistant volleyball coach from 2004-07 at Mississippi State University. The Bulldogs set a school record for conference wins each of the three years, winning eight during the 2006 season and accumulating a 17-13 overall record. In 2007, the Bulldogs tallied a 3.48 overall team GPA, the best ever recorded for Mississippi State women’s volleyball. During the summer of 2005, Forman returned to his native Hungary to serve as associate
head coach of the Hungarian men’s national team that defeated Serbia-Montenegro, the runnersup in the 2005 World League Championships. Forman began his collegiate coaching career in the United States when he served as the first assistant volleyball coach at Baylor University during the 2003 season. In 1999, Forman established the NRK-Nyiregyhaza Club, that became middle Europe’s top women’s volleyball club. The club won the Hungarian Championship three straight years (2000, 2001 and 2002) and the Middle European Champions League (MEVZA) title in 2000. He led the team to an overall record of 176-13 for a winning percentage of .931. During his tenure as a club coach from 1990-00, he guided teams to elite eight finishes in the European professional CEV Champions League in 1990 and 1994, as well as CEV Cup League in 1991 and 1999. Forman started his coaching career as the head coach of the Vasas Sports Club, which made it to the 1990 Hungarian Cup title and a fifth-place finish in the European CEV Champions League. The following year, while serving under the direction of famed Chinese champion coach Sun De Lee, the team captured the Hungarian Cup and posted another fifth-place finish in the European CEV Cup League. In addition to his club experience, Forman has head coaching experience on the international level. He began coaching the Hungarian junior national team in 1993 before taking the head coaching position of the Hungarian women’s national team for four years. The Hungarian junior national team finished 10th in the 1992 European Championship and went on to take fifth place in the World Championship held in Brazil in 1993. In 1997, while coaching the Hungarian women’s national team, the Forman-led squad earned wins over Canada, Germany and the United Sates en route to a first-place finish at the 1997 Canada Cup. As a player, Forman was a setter for the Hungarian junior championship team from 197983 and was a member of the Semmelweis University team that won the collegiate national championship of Hungary from 1984-89.
