WHAT IS A CHANTICLEER? The Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina University when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.

PAUL
HOGAN HEAD COACH | FIRST SEASON UNIVERSITY OF CHARLESTON, 1995
Coastal
Carolina University Director of Athletics Hunter Yurachek announced Paul Hogan, former associate head women’s coach at the University of Colorado, as the fourth head women’s soccer coach in Chanticleer history Thursday, Jan. 5, 2010. “We are extremely excited to have Paul join our athletics family at Coastal Carolina,” Yurachek said. “Paul’s experience with building programs into contenders on the national level, coupled with his recruiting prowess, made him stand out among a great group of candidates. He demonstrated to us a clear plan on how to build a complete championship program - one that has been successfully tested at other University’s - and we are excited to help him execute that plan. He will be a great leader for the young women on our soccer team and a great part of the Coastal Carolina community.” Hogan spent the past 10 seasons, including the last five as associate head coach, under Colorado head coach Bill Hempen, helping the Buffaloes compile a 104-64-24 (.604) record and a national ranking at the end of the 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2008 seasons. “I am thrilled for the opportunity to join the Coastal Carolina family and community and lead the women’s soccer program,” said Hogan. “The rich athletic traditions and academic excellence coupled with a great campus location make Coastal Carolina a school full of exponential potential. The women’s soccer program has been successful since its inception, and I look forward to challenges of meeting the standards set by the previous coaches and taking Coastal Carolina women’s soccer to the next level.” Hogan was hired at Colorado in 2001. Two years later, Hogan helped direct the Buffaloes to a 2003 Big XII regular season title, the first in school history, and Big XII Tournament Finals in 2005, 2006 and 2008. In his 10 years, the Buffaloes competed in six NCAA Tournaments, including a run to the Sweet 16 during the 2006 season. During Colorado’s 14-6-4 season of 2006, the Buffs were ranked 15th nationally in total attendance and second in the Big XII.
1999 squad won a school-record six conference matches, a feat duplicated by the 2000 team, earning Hogan conference Coach of the Year accolades with his student-athletes earning NCAC Newcomer and Offensive Player of the Year postseason honors. Hogan made the leap to head coach in April 1998 from Duke where he was an assistant for the 1996 and `97 seasons. He assisted the Blue Devils to a two-year record of 28-11. In 1997, Duke finished 15-5-0, including a 4-2-0 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference action, and won the ACC tournament championship. Over his two seasons, Hogan helped coach three All-Americans and 11 All-ACC selections. Previously, Hogan spent one season contributing at his alma mater, the University of Charleston (W.Va.), as a volunteer assistant. He helped Charleston to a 17-3 record and an NCAA Division II playoff berth in 1995. Hogan graduated from Charleston in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in sports science. There, he was a three-time All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection at goalkeeper. He earned All-South Region honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association in both 1993 and 1994, and led the Golden Eagles to WVIAC championships in 1992 and 1994. Born August 22, 1972, the Monroe, N.Y., native is a 1990 graduate of Washingtonville High School. He is the oldest of two and his younger sister Nancy also played collegiate soccer at Elon. In what little free time he has, Hogan likes to golf. He married former Colorado assistant coach Alli Hunt in May of 2008.The Hogan’s welcomed their first son Declan Brady Hogan on February 11, 2010.

postseason play for the first time in school history and reached the finals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament, capping off East Central’s most successful season ever with 11 wins.
In Stoneman’s first season at Coastal, he helped guide the Chants to a 10-8-2 overall record and a share of the regular season conference crown. Under the instruction of Stoneman, the Coastal keepers combined for six clean sheets and only six goals allowed during conference play. Senior goalkeeper Amy Haggard finished the season with a 6-1-2 record, while posting a .71 goals against average as she became the Chants alltime leading goalkeeper in numerous statistical categories.
Stoneman became the coaching supervisor for the Falmouth Football Club in Portland, Maine, in the summer of 2001, where he supervised 12 soccer instructors, oversaw six teams and was in charge of over 220 players. He was also the Director of Soccer at Camp Laurel, the nation’s exclusive summer soccer camp.
Stoneman spent three seasons at East Carolina University, where he was the assistant coach in charge of goalkeepers. During his time with the Pirates, the squad went 3216-12 and 14-9-8 in Conference-USA, including the 2008 regular season title and a run to the league tournament finals. During his tenure, he coached goalkeeper, Amber Campbell, who was the C-USA Defensive Player of the Year, Second Team All-Southeast Region and First Team All-Conference selection in 2008. He also worked with defender Madison Keller, who spent part of the 2009 season with the Washington Freedom of the Women’s Professional Soccer League. In his time at ECU, the combined goals-against average was less than a goal a game in the 60 contests. Prior to his time at ECU, Stoneman spent three years at Louisiana Tech as an assistant coach. While at Louisiana Tech, Stoneman helped the program achieve national rankings of third in scoring offense and 17th in shutout percentage. In addition, he was responsible for recruiting Emily Cleaveland, the Louisiana Sportswriters Association Freshman-of-the-Year in 2005, and coordinating all aspects of Louisiana Tech’s recruiting efforts.
Stoneman enjoyed a successful playing career at Oklahoma Christian University from 1996-98, where he led the team to two Sooner Athletic Conference titles. He also played with the Oklahoma City Slickers and OKC Spirit of the USISL. Stoneman was then selected by Dallas FC (the then-Dallas Burn) on account of his participation in the MLS Combine and subsequently took a spot on the Kansas City Wizards reserve team. Stoneman holds impressive credentials, such as a National Soccer Coaches Association of America Level II Goalkeeping Diploma, an Advanced National Diploma, a National B License from the United States Soccer Federation, a National A License from the USSF, an English F.A. Premier Badge and a NSCAA International Diploma. He also participated in an internship for U.S. Soccer, observing training camps and sessions for the United States National Teams. Stoneman received a B.S. in health and recreation from East Central University in 2001.

There, he actively oversaw all aspects of recruiting Eastern New Mexico’s initial team. Before his stint at Eastern New Mexico, Stoneman spent a year coaching the Dallas Texans Club Team and the Olympic Development Teams. In 2001-02, he joined the Baylor women’s soccer program and further broadened his experience under Head Coach Nick Cowell. At Baylor, Stoneman was in charge of scouting, video analysis, enhancing the Bears’ recruiting base and practice sessions. COASTAL CAROLINA SOCCER FIELD
The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team has called the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field home since the 2002 season. The Chanticleers opened the field with a 2-1 win over Appalachian State Sept. 1, 2002, and have won nearly 63 percent of their games on the home turf. Coastal Carolina and the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field hosted the 2006 Big South Women’s Soccer Championships and the men’s squad hosted Davidson in a first-round NCAA Tournament game in 2003. The Coastal Carolina Soccer Field features a full-size pitch with natural grass and bleacher seating on the East size of the complex. A press box and new scoreboard were installed in 2004 and improvements to the aesthetics of the field have been ongoing. The Coastal Carolina Soccer Field surely holds a distinctive home field advantage for the Chants as the program is 51-24-8 all-time within its friendly confines. The Chants opens the 2011 home schedule Saturday, Aug. 27 against Southern Conference member Georgia Southern.
RETIRED NUMBER # 26 - APRIL STIRTON
In a ceremony prior to the 2011 women’s soccer alumni game (April 9, 2011), the alumni and current team came together to pay the ultimate homage to a former player, dear friend and role model by officially retiring April Erin Stirton’s number 26 from the women’s soccer program. Stirton’s number was retired almost a year to the day after the CCU women’s soccer family suffered the devastating and tragic loss of Stirton. Stirton, from Waxhaw, N.C., proudly wore the number 26 for the Chanticleers. She entered Coastal Carolina as a junior transfer from Wingate College in the fall of 2002, playing two seasons as a Chanticleer under former head coach Karrie Miller. During that time, Stirton displayed her talent, skill and competitive drive to earn a starting position on the CCU field and simultaneously became an immediate member of the women’s soccer family with her southern charm, compassion and unique personality. During her soccer career at Coastal Stirton started in 38 of the 39 games in which she appeared. Over the 2002-03 seasons, Stirton’s contributions on the defensive end helped lead the Chants to a Big South Championship in 2003. While at Coastal, she was an actively involved student-athlete, was a two-year starter on the women’s soccer team, was a member of the Coastal Carolina University National Competition Cheerleading Squad, an intramural basketball star and a dedicated student of the Wall College of Business.

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each studentathlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 15 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages.
Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track & field in 1997. The Conference’s 19th championship sport -- women’s lacrosse, will begin play in 2012-13 with seven members. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership, as an all-time high 11 member institutions comprise the 28-year League in 2011-12. Recent additions include High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian College, plus the return of charter member Campbell University this year. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 700 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, more than 240 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship six times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the first women’s golf program advance to the national finals, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team five consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, has had four NFL Draft picks, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four out of the last seven years – including a national seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run), Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reach the postseason for the first time in Conference history. Last season, Chelanga won two more NCAA National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its first automatic bid recipient in football (Coastal Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the first in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and a Leaguerecord 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell made the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team – one of five former Big South athletes to compete in the Games; VMI’s Reggie Williams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriors in 2010, UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star in 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won four PGA Tour events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007 and tied for runner-up at the 2011 Open Championship. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its 27 years of existence. Furthermore, the Big South has a record number of NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last two years.

Coastal Carolina University won the prestigious George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup for a record-setting ninth time in 2006-07. The Sasser Cup, named for the former Coastal Carolina Athletic Director and Big South Commissioner, honors the top overall athletic department in the Big South Conference. The award is based on a point system, with points being awarded based upon each school’s finish in each of the 18 league-sponsored sports. The Chanticleers’ nine Sasser Cup awards are the most earned by one school in Big South history. Coastal won the 2006-07 award by capturing Big South titles in football, women’s indoor track, men’s golf, women’s tennis (tournament) and baseball (regular-season and tournament). In addition to the Big South honors, Coastal Carolina was represented in six different NCAA Championships.
