Introduction: Taijiang area is used to be a huge lagoon, but filled and leveled up by rivers’ sediments. Now, the scale we can see is just the remain it leaved. Deu to the geographic and climatic reasons, it has abundant ecological resources. I still remember, when I was a child, my parents often took me to the coastline for sightseeing. The special landscape impressed me, beaches, fish ponds, and plenty of mangroves. Migrant birds could easily be seen;mudskippers and fiddler crabs could likely be touched in wetlands. The residents there live by fishing and fish-farming for hundreds of years. Nowaday, when I went back to the coastline, there has something changed. 03.

The Black-faced Spoonbill is an endangered species in International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. The precious birds visit Taiwain every Autumn to get through the winter. Nowaday, the amount of the species is declining in Tainan.

Seasons

in Taijiangnational park

Deu to the changing of economy, the fish farming industry changed the species of farming, and it also changed the type of farming. Although the consequence raises income to a part of fishmen, the ecology system has been changed.

Most of the villeages in this National Park are facing problems like aging population and emigration. How to pass down the native culture and wisdoms leaved by ancestors is definitely a hard task.

Constructing an incinerator near the conservation area is ironic to human beings. The ashes generated by it bury around the site. Animals bear to accept the toxicant produced by human;after all, these poisons will return to ourselves. The incinerator estimated can be used 20 years(1999-2019). What can we do after it retired ?

Issues of incinerator: As several advanced countries like Japan Germany, and Korea..., incinerator has already constructed in urban distirct, it shows respect and responsibility to nature.

Biologically, the incenerator constructed near the coastline where produces the basic food we eat every day is a serious problem. The area embraces fish ponds, an estuary, mangrove forest, oyster shed, and migrant birds habitat. The influence not only endanger animals there but also people who eated the food resources cultivated there;it’s called bioaccumulation.

Considering the different weather conditions of the site, I use ladscape and architecture arrangement as response.

The entire plan focus on adding habitats of wild animals and creating more human-animal shared spaces.

The new topography divived the site into three parts, fist part is high human activity area, secondly is half human half animal activity area, the final part is entire animal activity area. Eco-education is an important part in national park. Let people understand what we have, and how to conserve them. So, part of the incinerator change into museum and set an eco-classroom in the site.

Seasonal breeding Continuosly breeding Continuosly breeding Milk fish cultivation history commenced from Ming Dynasty. It is also the common memory of citizens. Because of the cultivation way-breeding during spring to autumn, after breeding seasons the ponds will be drained away into low-level surface, the area become the best foraging ground for Black-faced Spoonbill and other migrators and local birds. For the past few years, the ecology of fish cultivation changed. Milk fish breeding becomes less valuable than grouper and meretrix breeding. Fishman begins to change the aquatic they used to breed. As a result, it affects the amount of Black-faced Spoonbill year by year.

Concept

Space tactics I try to rearrange local texture by landscape ways;ecology is the top most priority in the project. Then, adding creature-friendly spaces and removing the soil of the landfill to utilize it. Use and preserve the original concrete structure of retired incinerator(2019),and transform it into Aging people greenhouse museum, young hostel, and wet land research station. Proceeding with eco education, and creating job opportunities let local young people be willing to go back to their native place to rediscover and protect the lovely land. The landfill transform into a tidal wet land, the migrant birds and estuary Ecological conservation eco-system can have more living environment. Setting up two types of villas in appropriate distance and area, lets tourists there can experience the sensation which lives in nature again, achieving the meaning Incinerator of eco-education.

Program: ◦ Greenhouse museum[Greenhouse, Restaurant, Hostal, Conference room, Bar] ◦ Eco-tourist resort[Reception center, Eco-classroom, Two types of villas] Takes carbon footprint and animal habitates into considerations. I set a parking lot and shuttle vehicle stations in the village near the site(2.5Km). Visitors have three kinds of way to get to the site, bus, bike, and golf cart(resort only). Visitors can take the bus to reach the museum. Travlers stay at resort can use golf carts to the site, and people with disabilities can move by it in the area. Visitors also can ride bikes to reach the museum.Tourists stay at resort and reasurcher can use these path to go hiking, sight-seeing, and bird-observation by bike or walk.

Climate and history -Climate-

環境與歷史

Istanbul is characterized as having a Mediterranean climate. -ClimateOne of the most salient characteristics of the climate in parts of Istanbul is its persistently high humidity, which reaches 80 percent most mornings. Because of these conditions, fog is very common, although more so in northern parts of the city and away from the city center. Notably dense fog events that disrupt transportation in the region, including on the Bosphorus, are perennial occurrences during the autumn and winter months, when the humidity remains high into the afternoon. The humid conditions and the fog tend to dissipate by midday during the summer months, but the lingering humidity still has the effect of exacerbating the moderately high summer temperatures.

-Orient ExpressThe Orient Express is the name of a long-distance passenger train service originally operated by the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits. It ran from 1883 to 2009 and is not to be confused with the Venice-Simplon Orient Express train service, which continues to run. On June 1, 1889, the first non-stop train to Istanbul left Paris (Gare de l'Est). Istanbul remained its easternmost stop until May 19, 1977. The eastern terminus was the Sirkeci Terminal by the Golden Horn.

Istanbul is the olny city crossing over Europe and Asia, and it’s also the capital in ancient empires. Due to it’s historic characteristic, many kinds of cultures are mixing here, and people always feel the spirit of this place is mysterious. Although now, Istanbul is not the capital of Turkey, it being still the center of finance, culture, and economy. The urban texture and architecture here reflect many cherectristics of ethnic groups and empires which coexisting in the city.

Istanbul has many up-and-down and interweaved streets. In my opinion, the perception of directions by people in urban spaces is important. Especially in Istanbul, a city like a labyrinth. Moreover, due to the geographic position of Istanbul, the sence of time is overlapping here. Especially under the programe of Turkey culture center, I hope the site and the train station can be an important node of the city, and connect other nodes’ perception of directions.

Intro. Impacting on all aspects of creative production, digital design and manufacturing tecnologies enable architects and designers to work at a pace and resolution unimaginable just few years ago. Digital systems allow designers to accumulate, structure and utilize massive quantities of information to paramatrically shape products and the built environment. With this context, this project seeks to revaluate the role of craft and hands-on production in the digital design domain. The project is looking into the potential of paper folding in architecture. The aim of this project is through low-tech fabrication method to build or manufacture high-tech computational design. This project went through various kinds of folding methods. In the same time, the material system is also taking an important part of the project. InCrease started from paper folding to investigating paper pulp as a building material. The material system always responds to the design processes and fabrications. The whole project based on component- aggregation design, which creates different hierarchies connections.

Phase one : Folding and casting In the vary beging of the project, we trield several folding and casting posibilities. Folding is a good way of generating surface forms. In the initial research of folding technique, the most interesting thing is the outcome of the folded crease pattern. These pattern either enhance the load bearing ability or make the surface unique and delicate. One of the exercises is to figure out how the crease and form produced by folding could be kept. Some casting tests were done in term 1 and some interesting moments happened in this experiment.

After the first several attempts to fold and to cast, structure and formation failure happened all the way. The failure can be concluded into three points. 1. Folding is a continuous form language, while the folding will not be continuous due to the limitation of the folding material. 2. Folding pattern complex and lack of regularity. This makes the component hard to connect with each other, resulting in the formation always limited in a very small and simple scale. Connection method is important in aggregation. 3. The material was used to cast is not even relavant to the paper itself. Whether it is possible to ‘cast’ the outcome by the paper or some other status of paper came into question.

Phase Two : one pattern many forms This project started with exploring the potential of the relationship of folding and patterns. Paper folding is based on crease patterns, without these creases it cannot called folding. At the begging, the folding shape is a circle. These circles were subdivided to several frequencies. Followed by, one-frequency circle and eightfrequency patterns were utilized to different ways. Due to structural and formational reasons, this project became a component based aggregative design. Material system will be introduced as an indispensable part of the project. The next phase will involve fractal concept in the project. At the end of the part, formation generation will be applied to the design. This project investigated a circle as an initial research of pattern and folding. Followed by the experiment, this project focused on one frequency and eight frequency patterns. The frequencies of the circle mean the different subdividing results. Higher frequency pattern has more potential to fold a delicate formation. Eight frequency patterns were utilized to find a proper form as a prototype. Because of eightfrequency pattern was subdivided to many regular triangles, these objects folded by the patterns have potential to connect or interlock together. There are 85 intersection points in the pattern. It means there has 7140 constrained relationships between these points. With the patterned sheet on hands people could create various spatial movements into a 3 dimension object. folding elements

Digital prototypes

This bench only utilized one size components. Moreover, the cross-connection in this piece was also as the sitting area. To the leg of the bench, it used face to face with rotation connection method. This bench took 19 components to build.

In this chair, the smallest component was fill in the sitting area for comfortable and flat sitting. The middle components were the main structure of the sitting part and connected with the crossconnection. The biggest components connected with face to face with rotation as the leg and backrest. This chair was took 90 components to build.

Digital prototypes

The small components comprised the core of this lattice chair. The medium components connected as a shell of the core. The connection method is point to point. In real world, it is the weakest connection method. This chair took 61 components.

Digital prototype Paper sofa

There are 580 components composed this chair. The hight of sitting area is 42cm, width is 61cm, and depth is 41cm. In this step, we utilized cross-connected method to design our chairs. Due to the cross-connections is the strongest connection method for our project. Moreover, the cross-connections provide flat surfaces for sitting and backrest.

Pavilion design

According to previous research, we figured out a logical design process. The first step is to arrange the area that needs to aggregate. Then set up the tendency that base on the information we got from the site. The information could be cultural, urban, environmental, and structural contexts. Responding to Eisenman's design logic, the information could be a basis of morphogenesis. This project followed the logic to generate the first hierarchy components as a structural part, and then to generate the second and third hierarchy based on structural and lighting requirements.

Material test

In the material tests, we utilized other materials to reinforce paper. These materials include polyurethane casting resin, microcrystalline wax, paraffin wax, varnish oil and paper pulp. In the same time, different types and thickness paper was tested These materials are 170gam cartridge paper, 300gam paper sheet, 540mic cardboard, Kraft paper, 35mic pp plastic paper, and pulp mixture. After compression test, the result showed six reinforced components could be used in different bearing part of a structure.Especially, paper pulp, as a raw material of paper, has the best strength in all reinforced components. Moreover, paper pulp as a recycled material, the potential in architecture is profound.

GROWTH DEVELOPMENT 1:1:3 gyroid vector field (aggregationg type I: fill in surface space) In this design, Gyroid pattern is compressed in Z direction. As a result, the vector field is also compressed in Z direction. Since the components aggregate along the direction o f t h e ve c t o r, t h e y wo u l d create more layers than in the vector field of standard Gyroid surface. As the final render shows, the components create a platform above the ground. The radial shape doesn’t look so obvious than in the standard Gyroid vector field, because the space is too narrow to let the components spread out to every direction.

GROWTH DEVELOPMENT standard gyroid vector field (aggregationg type II: outline surface structure) W i t h i n t h e s a m e s t a n d a rd Gyroid pattern, in this design, the method of letting components aggregate along the surface is used. Since Gyroid surface is an arc-like shape structure, the components would form arch space in this situation. As the final render shows, the c o m p o n e n t s fo r m s eve r a l a rc h e s s i n c e t h e y o u t l i n e the standard Gyroid surface structure in the standard vector field. This situation is very fit to create arches.

GROWTH DEVELOPMENT 1:2:1 gyroid vector field (aggregationg type II: outline surface structure) In Y direction compressed Gyroid vector field, the potential arch space is also compressed. S o t h e s p a n of t h e a rc h e s would be shorter than those produced in standard Gyroid vector field. In this situation, the components create shelterlike space, as the final render shows. The Gyroid pattern in this situation is denser in Y direction, so the components create narrow arch space since t h e y a g g re g a t e a l o n g t h e surface.

FURTHER PROPOSAL

South Bank The South Bank is an entertainment and commercial district of Central London, England, next to the River Thames opposite the City of Westminster. It forms a narrow, unequal strip of riverside land within the London Borough of Lambeth and the London Borough of Southwark where it joins Bankside. As with most central London districts its edges evolve and are informally defined however its central area is bounded by Westminster Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge. The South Bank is a significant arts and entertainment district. The Southbank Centre comprises the Royal Festival Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and The Hayward Gallery. The Royal National Theatre, the Imax super cinema and BFI Southbank adjoin to the east. Paper Waste In today’s electronic age, people are starting to consider going paperless. But there’s still a long way to go before we lose our dependence on this very important human product. From our newspapers to our paper wrappings, paper is still everywhere and most of them are ending up in our landfills creating a staggering amount of paper waste. There was a time when paper was a rare and precious commodity. Now it fills our planet. It was initially invented as a tool for communication, but today, paper is used more for packaging. To produce paper takes twice the energy used to produce a plastic bag. Everything takes energy to produce. In the case of paper, it also involves cutting down trees. Deforestation is one of the main environmental problems we’re facing in these times. 42% of all global wood harvest is used to make paper.

FURTHER PROPOSAL

One of the chosen sites was located along the thames river, in the front of the area of south bank district. The site was surrounded by various transportation ways, like tubes, trains, yarchts, cars, and bikes . The southbank area plays a node role in London city. The southbank is a new art district, due to new constructions and planning. Artists from all over the world will come to London festival eve r y ye a r. Mo re ove r, t h e national theatre hold hundreds p e r fo r m a n c e s eve r y ye a r. Owing to these factors, this r i b b o n a re a s h ow n i n t h e diagram needs some rapid built and innovative meeting points and some spaces which can hold opening events for performances and exhibitions. One of the site was chosen to be a plaza located in front of the national gallery. The people flow from the opposite bank side and from the main roads are intersecting here. T h i s s u g g e s t s a p o te n t i a l space which should meet the need of meeting point and various outdoor activities.

The functional area division An open space whithin the boundary of chosen side, which was roughly regarded as a sq uare, was the constraint of the form generation process. The available space was shown in (a) due to the urban context. Circulation path was expected to be the the curves shown in (b). This was meant to create a small outdoor theatre and a semi-public meeting point as well. The path is expected to create a continous circulation expierence between the two small functional space and create different space quality due to the difference of the activities. The circulation path influence the generation of the landscape area of this project. The diagram(c) indicates a potential transition method between each functional area. The sitting and relaxing parts are closely sitted near the curves and the structural area are defined by the area with larger grids.
