Measuring Methodology: - My chosen object was the hyperbolic paraboloid that can be folded along the crease pattern - Since the object is quite novel and unfamiliar to me, I made an exactly same object at home according to the measured dimensions for better observation - Photographs were taken from the exact angles of each view so that i can easily get my drawing based on it

Analysis

CREASE PATTERN (see top) - - - - - - - Valley Fold ----------- Mountain Fold

Moment of the object - The object can be twisted in both directions and remained in same shape “X” SHAPE (see left) - After folding and squeezing the cardboard, partially opening the ‘X’ shape and slightly twisting will form the hyperbolic paraboloid

4

- After folding, it’s hard to flatten the crease which is stable

Digital Model

PERSPECTIVE VIEWS in different angles Modelling Method: - Firstly, I used polyline to draw quarter of the crease pattern ( triangle and trapezoid) and made them in to planes (planar curves) - Drag up all the ‘mountain fold’ to same level to form the crease - Duplicated 3 more and rotated to form a completed square ( as shown in top view) - Adjusted from front and right view to ‘curved’ the planar surface in both directions 5

DETAILS

Sketch Model Model Making Process: - To create my reconfigured object, I used square cardboard to make the square frames in different sizes - Secondly, the corners are folded in same direction with the diagonal side and the other side is in the opposite way - The idea comes from the crease pattern of the hyperbolic paraboloid

- Since the volume created by the original object is limited, I detach the crease pattern to extend the volume - When the object is reconfigured, i found that several random ways to assemble the frames - These frames can be stacked together randomly to form irregular volume (see right)

7

- The pattern frames can be sequentially arranged from small to large (see left) - On the other way, the frames can also be organized without order (see below)

Sketch Design #1 Surrounded / Adjustable / Protection / Comprehensive / Defensive What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]

- From the inspiration of the crease pattern frames with random sizes, the adjustable ‘amour’ is created - According to the different body shapes of each person and different distances people want to keep with others, the defence can be freely arranged and adjusted to surround the body - This design gives people an all-around protection of personal space and can be easily opened up and packed up by stacking together

Side How does this respond to your personal space? The user is able to control the device according to his own situation and repel any invasion of personal space

Sketch Design #2 Fragmented / Random / Collapse / Blind spot What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]

- The structure is made of repetition of fragmented crease frames with random sizes that formed behind the body (at the back) and extended to both sides of shoulders - As the structure is covering the sides and back of people, it will not affect the daily activities and also considered about the aesthetic performances - However, when the device is not neccessary, the user is able to let the segments collaspse

Front

Side How does this respond to your personal space?

- Blind spot is critical to a person who is focusing on doing something that is not able to observe the surroundings

10

People are not able to predict the situation on the invisible boundaries and dislike to be disturbed when they are concentrating. With the structure, users are becoming defensive without any obstruction

Sketch Design #3 Foldable / Helmet / Flexible / Privacy / Protective What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]

- Protection of head is vital to people, the purpose can be both of safety and privacy - Some people feel uncomfortable when they are reading book or using phone but can be watched by the people near. With the help of the device, the situation is solved - The structure is stacked by crease frame along sequential order from small to large, so the users are able to control the size and expand angle of device according to the need

Front (after open)

Side How does this respond to your personal space?

- The material chosen is light, flexible but strong, so that the device could be easily carried and keep

The user is able to adjust the portable device in different situation to keep safe and own privacy

- The foldable hat could also become an adornment on head 11
