ELEVATION WITH RETACTED UNBRELLA
I completed the measured drawing of the umbrella using a few methods. The dimensional measurement is done using a measuring tape. This gives me the extended height of the umbrella 580mm and the width of the deployed umbrella 1000mm. As the umbrella has 8 extension arms, the angle between each arm would be 45°. This creates a shadow area of 850903mm².

SECTION
The angle of which the arms are deployed in elevation view is calculated via simple trigonometry. An umbrella is first striped down into its basic components, ie the arms, the telescoping shaft and the canopy. A photograph of the extended umbrella is taken and then printed on a piece of paper. Using actual measured length and extrapolation of ratio, angles of fully deployed arms are calculated. This angle is cross checked with physical measurement using a protractor.

Analysis
There are two important components to the umbrella. First are the collapsible arms. This mechanism transforms vertical movement into horizontal movement via a series of pins. As users push the hub upwards along the vertical shaft, compression occurs at the fixed end of the arm. This in turn creates rotational forces at respective pins and extends the arm outwards. Such basic transmission of forces, from user to umbrella, from vertical to horizontal, should be noted.

Second part is the telescopic shaft. The shafts are hollow tubes where one shaft is smaller than it other as they extend upwards. Thus, smaller shafts can be hidden in larger shaft, reducing the umbrella’s length when unused. This idea of hiding in plain sight is something which makes the compact umbrella interesting as such telescopic mechanism have also used in magic performances.
Relationship between skin and skelelton When the arms are collapsed, the umbrella membrane loses tension. When the arms are extended, the effect is vice versa.
Unbrella membrane
It has also been observed that there are only 3 anchor/contact points between the arm and the membrane. These connection points are located at joints of the arms.

Step 2
A bitmap of the measured arm drawings was first place on the modeling space and traced accurately.
Using 1 Rail Sweep and 2 Rail Sweep commands arm surface was created. Using offset, thickness of was created.
Step 4
Step 5
Using Revolve comman, volume of shaft was created.
Umbrella canopy surface was created via a network of curves and polar array.
Step 3
Using Polar Array commands, multiple arms was created.
Sketch Model Sketch Model Concepts Several concpets from the unbrella analysis have been brought to the sketch model. First, comes the idea of movable arm which is able to trasnfer the direction of force. Second, is the concept of hidding volume in plain sight (the telescopic shaft). Last is the relation and connection between the physcially hard arms and the soft flexible surface (umbrella skeleton and canopy).
1.Changing direction of force. When downward force is applied, the canopy expands and gains volume. Users does not need to have physically contact the membrane to expand the structrue’s volume. This concept can be applied to personal space where one might find pushing someone away as uncivilised.

2. Hidding volume at plain sight When the plastic sheet is collapsed, it hides in the horizontal plane and when it is needed, it expands upwards. This concept of hiding can be applied to personal space: how can we hide one’s own personal zone so that others people can come closer.
3. Contact points The contact points between the plastic sheets and the wooden arms are at the joints. Its is not a full surface contact/anchor but a point contact between these two materials. Personal space also have similar ‘contact points’, which determines ones relationship with another.
Sketch Design #1 Idea: Making people come closer The first idea is to build a series of reflective panels around the subject. Through a series of joints and springs, the panels can be deployed (vertical) and retract (horzontal) as needed. The reflective surface (one way mirror) acts like second skin for the user while the mechensim is the skeleton. The curved surface reflects surrounding envrionemnt around user.

Mechenism
Among all personal space distances, one feels most comfortable and familiar with one’s own skin and image. By using a series of reflective surfaces, strangers will come out of their own personal zone and enter my personal zone without them realising. This is becase they will only see their image when they look at me (refelction panel deployed) and hence feels more comfortable to approch. When they come close enough, the reflective panels will be retracted, breching conventional expectation personal space distacne with a stanger. (Hidding at plain sight, Contact points)

Sketch Design #2 Idea: Protecting own personal space A network of skeleton mechanism which can expand can be created. The tip of the joints are connected by a network of strings. When the skeleton expands, the strings connected to the joints tightens and a volume is created and defined. When retracted, the skeleton collape and the strings lose tension.

Mechensim
It is a simple concept making one’s own personal space highly visible to others and clearly define the distance of one’s personal space preference. As personal space have much ambiguity, differed by gernder, culturem personality, status, social perception etc, physically drawing out boundaries can help to possess the space. The expandable skeleton can flexibly change the amount of perosnal space needed from time-to-time. (Volume)
Sketch Design #3 Idea: Privatisng perosnal space This idea involves an extended capsule arm which extends beyond ones personal space. The arm is controlled by a series of joints and levers where the user can clam the jaws. The exterior of the jaws are wraped with tranparent sheet, the capsules volumes.
Military signal jammer expands space need for ‘private communication’.
Plan: Closed capsule
Plan: Opened capsule
Response to presonal space This idea is about rethinking the way we think about personal space. It is not the immidiate space which one is surrouned by by the negative of it. The is materialied by extending the frame and capsule beyond ones personal space to encroach on that of others. This prevents them from intruding upon or even approaching one’s own. This system focuses on defending personal space by possesing more space and making them personal. Isometic: Clamping
