Venice Refuse Incinerator and ISMAR Boathouse

Pratt 2018 Spring CAP Studio Collective Work Partner: Yang Li Instructor: Henry Smith-Miller Venice, Italy

Venice, the city of islands and water, is a city in northeastern Italy and the capital of the Veneto region. The unique geometry characteristic of Venice gives us many inspirations about our projects. The site we chose, Certosa, is a small island located at the Eastside of Venice. The landscape also includes a large area of shallow water and a footpath along the coastline. There is the main canal separates Certosa from a larger island which also provides us a clue about how transportation works in this particular water area. Our main goal is to generate a large architecture system which combines the incinerator with the boathouse program together. In order to incorporate with the surrounding environment, we decided to create a ribbon-like structure, along with the coastline, merges landscape and trail together.

The inspiration comes from bionics that we place our project as a species of the ocean. Unlike other incinerator construction, we want visitors to interact with incinerator more. So we build this trail, from the tail of this “organism to the top of the incinerator to experience the energy production happened. The term of eco-friendly is also an essential point of our design, we want to combine solar panel, green roof and terrace space on the top of our trail. The design of supporting structure and court are also followed our goal of accessibility and experience. At last, we try to restore the reflection of fish scale by using hanging glazed ceramics in specific angles to achieve different light distortion at a different time.

Bubble Tower Residential Highrise in Downtown Brooklyn

BUBBLE TOWER

Residential Highrise in Downtown Brooklyn Pratt 2017 Fall Studio Individual Work Instructor: Maria Sieira Brooklyn, US The tower is designed to solve the mixed problem in downtown Brooklyn. People, vehicles, retailers, and historical buildings, any of them can cause a big problem. The bubbles here are designed as a tool to define privacy and public in the modern city. The form of the tower origins from "tornados," which carry particles on the ground up high. In this project, the massing is continuously twisted, bringing the plaza to part of the facade.

In the Cloud CreativeHub among skyscrapers

"IN THE CLOUD"

CreativeHuB Among Skyscrapers JIT 2016 Spring Foundation Studio III Individual Work Instructor: Shaofeng Ge Nanjing, China "In the Cloud" is a public space among skyscrapers, it is a flowing space that can be isolated and connected to provide different types of the workspace. In this project, we use free -flow form instead of straight lines. It is wonderful that imaging you now being in a mountain, you can feel the different atmosphere at the different parts of the hill--on the peak, or on the slopes, or on a valley; however you are actually in the same space. Moreover, the ups and downs of the ground meet the human walking habit -- people don't walk in a straight line. The goal of our architecture is to create a way of the movement as close as possible to the natural physical habit, offering more possibilities of activity styles people working there.

POROUS STONE

Creative Hub in Sheshan International Village JIT 2016 Spring Studio Individual Work Instructor: Ying Han Shanghai, China The creative hub includes an art museum and some other programs. It origins from the idea of the traditional Chinese gardens, containing the concept of "Jin," which means going into spaces with certain senses of ritual. The visitors can have the similar modes of perception as in traditional Chinese gardens. The mass is separated into small pieces while each of them has connections tightly just like the porous stone. In the project, the concept of the holes of stones is designed as different topic courtyards. At the same time, the courtyard which means "yuan" in Chinese, the same pronunciation as the "circle" and "round," has the meaning of smooth and round.

Mixed Aging Community is a product of making the full use of land to attract young people and protecting the local residencies; I provided public spaces on ground level to house entertaining and medical facilities; there is much open space within the residential units to enhance the communication between people which is lacking in contemporary neighbor life. Additionally, people have their habit of life so that I design the different kinds of the dwelling unit for residents. Several sizes of balconies and room composition consist of the community. With more choices and more composition people, there will have a happier life.

CONTINUOUS LANDSCAPE Campus Library

JIT 2015 Spring Foundation Studio III Individual Work Instructor: Shaofeng Ge Suzhou, China A full campus needs penetration of space and new public experience, which is the origin of this library. The new construction is lifted up from the ground, giving the ground floor back to the public as continuous landscape and shortening students' route through the site. Continuous formation and slope roof allow people to reach the top-roof and have a fresh perspective on the campus. The ground and the roof turn into a uniformed landscape, creating more common space for users. Besides, the cantilevered space changes the previous library's inherent calm spatial quality and increases the vitality of the campus. Slidable grille design is inspired by ancient Chinese casement which can be changed adapting to various climate. In this design, the arrangement of different size and combination of grille meet the requirement of different programs in the library. With the diversification of interiors programs as well as weather, the exterior appearance will change accordingly. DIVERSITY OF SPACE
