Club History Dating back to 1922, the Chapel Hill Country Club has evolved from a small six-hole golf course and a tennis court on a hill along the edge of the campus of the University of North Carolina into a stately refuge nestled in the heart of The Oaks neighborhood not far from the original grounds. The first golf course was constructed on property granted by Dr. William C. Coker, noted botanist and for whom UNC’s Coker Arboretum is named. The course was created on a hillside that is now a part of the UNC recreational facilities and Country Club Road. The land was cleared by one man, Isaac Geer, with a mule and plow and the course was created with the help of the 123 original members. A humble, but notably well enjoyed clubhouse was host to innumerable celebrations over the course of five tumultuous and exciting decades that included the Great Depression, World War I, and World War II. Chapel Hill’s rich history is deeply intertwined with the history of the Club. The Club has always been guided by a dedicated membership that has maintained a love of leisure, social activity, and all that makes Chapel Hill unique. The Club moved to its current location in 1976, allowing expansion to a 18-hole course, a more gracious clubhouse, tennis and swimming facilities. In 2007, the clubhouse suffered extensive fire damage. The members banded together, and a new grander clubhouse was planned and completed on the same location, but with a much different presence. Today, members new and old are enjoying the home and family created by the Chapel Hill Country Club. Membership is far more than just use of the beautiful facilities; it is being a part of a great community. We invite you to explore the benefits of membership and our unique and wonderful Club family as we evolve and continue the legacy that is Chapel Hill Country Club.
