PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Town & Gown Members, We are well into our 40th Anniversary year and many plans are underway to surprise you and make this 40th year one we all will remember in the history of Town & Gown. The elected and appointed leadership board of Town & Gown meets monthly. I would like to share with you some of the recent actions undertaken by this group of volunteers who represent you. Sometime ago your board made a five-year commitment to fund refurbishment of the T&G Conference Room in Memorial Hall. This year the Board voted to accelerate payment on this commitment and $12,000 has been designated for our pledge payment this year. If we are able to pay the same amount next year we will have paid off our commitment one year earlier than planned and you as members will have donated $40,000 to create a special meeting place for faculty and staff of Chapman University. Another recent action was to authorize purchase of a new banner for Town & Gown. Barbara Parker is heading up the team to design and procure this new banner. We hope to have it in place for the Annual Spring Luncheon on May 1. Throughout this newsletter you will read more about the many exciting plans and events that are planned for the remainder of this year. Be sure to mark your calendars and be present at our May 1 Luncheon. Town & Gown is you - our loyal members!

– Donna Gladson

ANNUAL LUNCHEON TO FEATURE DANCE ENSEMBLE’S “THE CREATIVE SPARK: DANCE AND INSPIRATION” The Town & Gown Board is planning a festive Annual Spring Luncheon in celebration of its 40th year as a Chapman support group at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 1, in the William and Willa Dean Lyon Conference Center, second floor, Argyros Forum, Room 209. Special guests will include Chapman President James L.Doti and the faculty guest speakers from the 2007-08 Lunch at the Forum series who will be inducted into our Hall of Lecturers: Dr. Fred Caporaso, Dr. Stephen Polcari, Instructor Lynda Hall and Assistant Professor Daniel Alfred Wachs. Asst. Professor Dale Merrill, chair of Chapman’s department of dance, and faculty liaison to the Town & Gown Board, will introduce the Chapman Dance Ensemble which will present excerpts from its recent touring production entitled “The Creative Spark: Dance and Inspiration.” Four pieces have been selected that highlight the choreographic skills and technical prowess of Chapman’s dance majors. Before joining Chapman’s faculty, Professor Merrill was artistic director for

the nationally known Spectrum Dance Theater in Seattle, Washington. For two years he has been artistic director of Chapman’s highly-acclaimed scholarship fund raiser “American Celebration.” Professor Merrill’s presentation will follow the luncheon, (continued on page 2)

WHERE’S THE SPARKLE? Town & Gown is celebrating its 40th Anniversary in various ways. One way will be for some of us to make a special additional donation to Town & Gown and be given a pin to wear that “REALLY” sparkles! We have ordered a limited edition* of 100 T&G 40th Anniversary pins to be a onetime gift to T&G members who make a special 40th Anniversary donation of at least $100. Your gift will be 100% taxdeductible and your name will be listed as a special 40th Anniversary donor in a future issue of Talk of the Town. T&G’s 40th Anniversary donor pins will be patterned after our logo (continued on page 3)

FINAL TRIP OF THE SEASON PROMISES A HEAVENLY TIME On Wednesday, April 30, Town & Gown members and their guests will board a deluxe motor coach to Los Angeles for A Celestial Experience. First we will have lunch at the Tam O'Shanter Inn where the ambiance is charming, the main course delicious and the dessert heavenly. Then we'll go to the Griffith Park Observatory, the most-visited public observatory in the world, where we will have an opportunity to explore at our own pace. Recommended is the amazing show at the Samuel Oschin Planetarium. There we'll recline in comfortable seats as we look up at the heavens and learn how California observers have shaped our view of the universe. Purchase of tickets for the planetarium show, which can be bought only after our arrival at the Observatory, is a personal responsibility and costs $7 per person, $5 for seniors 60 and older. To learn about the history and recent renovation of the Observatory, don't mss the presentation at the Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater. Admission to this theater is free. We'll meet in the parking lot of the First Christian Church of Orange and leave promptly at 9:45 a.m., returning at approximately 5 p.m. The cost, which covers transportation, lunch and gratuities, is $50 per person. Information about this trip, including a reservation form, was mailed to members the first week of March. If you did not receive it or would like additional information, please call us at (714) 639-4956. Plans are now being made for the 20082009 trip schedule and any suggestions you have will be greatly appreciated. You are encouraged to join us as we visit interesting places, learn something new, or just relax and are entertained. It’s always more fun when we share these experiences with friends. – Carroll and Carol Howansky, Co-2ndVPs, Special Events

Gown Talk

By Joanne Jurczyk, University Advancement There is nothing like a dream to create the future. – Victor Hugo As I write this latest Gown Talk, this quote by Victor Hugo seems the perfect way to summarize the prospects of Chapman University. Here at Chapman dreams do create the future. President Doti recently made his annual State of the University Address and gave exciting insight into what we can anticipate in the coming years. The following highlights the growth, expansion and development he expects on campus before 2012. • The arrival of the Nobel Laureate Team to campus headed up by Dr. Vernon L. Smith, recipient of the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economics, who will lead the Economic Science Institute. • The completion this fall of the final phase of the Erin J. Lastinger Athletics Complex which includes the dedication of the Ernie Chapman Stadium, Zee Allred Aquatics Center and the Bill and Barbara Parker Atrium Lobby, to mention only a few of the many new facilities to be completed. • Announcement of the new Global Citizens Plaza that will include a stainless steel sphere water fountain surrounded by 64 flags of the world, an area to celebrate Chapman’s diverse student population and mission to “… to provide a personalized education of distinction that leads to inquiring, ethical and productive lives as global citizens.” • Plans for a new science building or complex - its location still to be announced along with the news of a physics program that also will include a team of scientists who will form an institute similar to Economic Science Institute. Chapman University’s path ahead continues to burn bright, and as we “dream to create a future.” Along the way, I want to remind everyone to take the opportunity to experience “dreams and futures” that are happening right now through the various theatrical works, dance recitals or concerts and sports events that highlight our talented Chapman students. I urge everyone to check the Chapman calendar of events at www.chapman.edu. Click on “About Chapman” and “Events Calendar” to discover Chapman University. While you are at it … check out the new Town & Gown Web page that includes the recent issues of Talk of the Town online and a photo gallery of T&G events.

AMCEL SEEKS HELP OF T&G MEMBERS For several years, Town & Gown and individual members of T&G have been generous supporters of the Opening Night performance of Chapman’s prestigious American Celebration scholarship fundraiser. Three of our members, Merry Berkowitz, Barbara Parker and I, are members of the committee for American Celebration Opening Night. Our goal this year is not only to have T&G attendance increase at Opening Night but to have additional T&G members elect to support the event as sponsors in the program brochure. T&G typically subscribes to a full-page ad as an organization and we encourage our members to consider individual sponsorships. A business card-sized ad starts at only $45. It also is our hope to have some early commitments as sponsorships for inclusion in the invitational brochure, to be mailed to more than 10,000 in the community, as an incentive for others to decide to participate.

Deadline to be included in the invitational brochure, is April 3. If you’d like to help with this project, or want to learn more about it, please call Merry at (714) 838-6418, Barbara at (714) 532-4302, or me at (714) 637-0158. We’d really like to hear from you. – Betty Bartley, American Celebration Opening Night Committee

Town Talk

The City of Orange is a fun and exciting place to be in the summer, offering events and activities for all to enjoy. Here is a quick look at we have planned for Summer 2008. Concerts in the Park (relax and listen to music). Pack your picnic baskets, relax at Hart Park (22 Fwy and Glassell), and enjoy fantastic free entertainment for all ages under the summer stars on Wednesday evenings from June 18-Aug. 13. Bring your blankets or lawn chairs and get ready for a great time! Food and drinks can be purchased at the Kiwanis Club of Orange booth. Swimming at the Plunge. Join in on all the fun at the newly renovated pools at Hart Park, yes pools! The old pool deck now accommodates two pools for the public to enjoy. Hart Park pool offers swimming lessons for all levels with certified instructors. Or stop by for recreational swimming at posted hours during the week and weekend – my personal favorite is night swimming on Wednesday evening. What about taking a cool dip while getting a great workout with our aquatic exercise program? This program helps sustain and improve joint mobility and muscle tone, and improves endurance levels in a fun, supportive class environment. Also, private pool rentals are a great way to celebrate a birthday, have a family reunion or even give a company party. Certified Lifeguards are included. Still more to do! The City of Orange offers an adult basketball program and slow pitch leagues for men, women, and co-eds. We also offer great summer day camp programs including a teen club. The City has a wonderful event to commemorate our nation’s Independence Day. The 3rd of July Celebration salutes the red, white and blue with the community. Join thousands of residents enjoying interactive games, listening to live entertainment, savoring delicious food from Orange non-profit groups, singing along to the Orange Community Master Chorale of Santiago Canyon College and becoming mesmerized by a colorful fireworks show. Top off a wonderful summer with a Labor Day tradition – the Orange International Street Fair. This event attracts over 100,000 people over the three-day event (Friday through Sunday). Start planning your fun-filled summer by logging on to www.cityoforange.org or call (714) 744-7274 for details about our programs and events. – Irma Hernandez, City of Orange, Sr. Assistant to the City Manager

RECORD ATTENDANCES MARK RECENT FORUM SERIES The recently completed 14th season of T&G’s Lunch at the Forum series, featuring Chapman faculty speakers, has seen evergrowing attendance at each luncheon. Popularity of the Forum is attributed to the interesting programming that showcased four outstanding faculty members who discussed topics ranging from life in the Galapagos Islands, to artist Jackson Pollock and author “Aunt” Jane Austen, to string quartet and piano performances. At present the plan is to continue holding the 2008-09 Lunch at the Forum Series in the same location - Argyros Forum. However, members and friends will need to reserve their season tickets early to avoid the disappointment of being placed on a waiting list. Look for a T&G summer flyer announcing the 2008-09 Lunch at the Forum Series. If you have questions or need additional information

on the series, call me at (714) 544-2254. I look forward to seeing everyone back next year. – Elaine S. Parke, 1st VP, Programs

An order form for the pins will be arriving in the mail soon – so be on the lookout! *(These pins will not be reordered.) – Karen Reese, 3rd VP, Membership

OOPS! In the Winter 2008 issue the honor conferred on founding member Betty R. Moss should have been Honorary Life Member instead of Honorary Member.

Chronicler’s Corner

While T&G members – especially Karen Reese and Donna Gladson – have been busy taking pictures of events and gathering information relating to our 40year anniversary celebration, Joanne Jurczyk, our liaison with University Advancement, has found a treasure trove of articles relating to the beginnings of our organization. A group of us will be visiting Chapman’s archives soon to review these files. If you have an interest in delving into our history, call me at (714) 637-3931. – Sharon Malloy, Historian

AND THE WINNER IS … CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY Town & Gown members join because they believe in helping students who wish to have a Chapman University education; they believe in contributing funds toward projects that enhance student learning or beautify the campus; and they believe in personal growth through participation in social and academic programs, while having “a great deal of fun” in the process. And we’ve been havin’ fun! In February alone, we enjoyed Lunch at the Forum, with Lynda Hall’s terrific presentation on Jane Austen. Later in the month we had a fabulous experience at the Candlelight Pavilion Dinner Theater in Claremont. Then in March, we “Met the Maestro”, again at the Forum luncheon. This “is” the way to go. Membership renewal forms will be mailed mid-April, but we are delighted to welcome new members all year long—especially during T&G’s 40th Anniversary year. We welcome new members Dr. Vernon Smith and his lovely wife Candace, Pam Brand (who once was a member), Alice & Jean DeBeauvieres, Barbara Post and Helen Walker. For information regarding T&G membership, please contact me at kreese7228@juno.com or (714) 921-9623. – Karen Reese, 3rd VP, Membership

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT … Our scholarship student Sarah Cary, spotted enjoying the music at our March Lunch at the Forum, is a junior and will graduate in May 2009 … T&G’s Conference Room is in process of moving from the first to the second floor of Memorial Hall … Also spotted at the March Forum was newly-arrived Dr. Vernon L. Smith who will lead Chapman’s Economic Science Institute, and his wife Candace …
