President’s Message If I were asked to describe Town & Gown members, I would say “enthusiastic” and “loyal”. Enthusiasm is evident when you meet the students, attend campus events, endorse our special projects and enjoy our trips. Loyalty is displayed when you support our scholarships and campus projects through membership dues and gifts each year and faithfully attend our outstanding Lunch at the Forum series. It makes all the effort worthwhile. For the first time, our annual luncheon on May 3 is included in the Lunch at the Forum series. A separate invitation will not be sent to you as in former years. Dr. Barbara Mulch will present a memorable program as she reflects on her 45 years at Chapman. She has made many significant contributions to the university, and we are honored that she is an advisor to our board. At this luncheon, we will induct our 20112012 speakers into the Hall of Lecturers. We will also elect officers for the coming year. The slate of nominees is presented on page 4. Many of them are continuing in their positions for second terms. The dedication and accomplishments of our board members is exemplary! My special thanks to each of you, our enthusiastic and loyal ambassadors who spread the good news of this remarkable university and our great support group, Town & Gown.

SPRING 2012

There’s Music in the Air on Our Spring Trip On Tuesday, April 24, we will have an opportunity to enjoy a complete musical treat when we go to the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad. The museum was founded in 1998 to showcase and celebrate the history of musical instruments of every size, shape and sound. We will be encouraged to play some of the instruments ourselves, even sing along, in interactive “hands-on” exhibits. After a guided tour, we will have the distinct pleasure of attending a performance by the Hutchins Consort. This virtuoso ensemble plays a set of eight proportionately scaled violins, ranging in size from the tiny treble violin, tuned an octave higher than an orchestral violin, to the gigantic Contrabass, tuned an octave lower than a standard cello. All are acoustically balanced to truly sound like violins over the range of human hearing.

With the ability to produce an astonishing palette of sounds, the Hutchins Consort plays music of every genre – from baroque, to the Beatles, to jazz, to world music, as well as their own compositions. The members have performed to great acclaim, nationally and internationally, since the consort’s founding in 1999. We are fortunate to have secured them for this concert. We hope you will be able to join us on this last trip of the academic year. It promises to be a unique experience, both audibly and visually. For additional information, including the schedule of the day, please refer to the flier you have received. If you have any questions, call us at 714-832-4754 Fay and Bill Amneus Co-2nd VPs, Special Events

Dr. Barbara Mulch to Speak about Chapman’s History of Making a Difference We look forward to a special program on Thursday, May 3, by one of Chapman University’s treasures, Dr. Barbara Mulch, director of fellowships and scholar programs. Dr. Mulch has been dean of the faculty, dean of graduate studies and vice chancellor for academic affairs, serving in these and other key positions for more than 35 years before her current appointment. She was awarded the status of dean emerita in recognition of her service in these positions.

In her presentation, Dr. Mulch will share with us tidbits of humor and little-known stories about faculty, administrators, benefactors and trustees – people she has come to know during her years at Chapman who have been vitally instrumental in weaving the remarkable tapestry of our university. Our speaker has been here for more than four decades, watching many events happen. She will share some funny and unusual stories that have occurred at the most unpredictable times. The fiber of these stories will reflect the impact that individuals have had on Chapman’s mission, goals, traditions and values, shaping a university that grooms ethical global citizens who are committed Continued on page 2

to changing the world for the better. To demonstrate this, Dr. Mulch will introduce us to scholarship-recipient students who will discuss their commitment to making a difference. Dr. Mulch will be the first to tell us the most important ingredient for Chapman’s success is the people who create a sense of commitment and community. The names and faces change throughout the years, but at the core of Chapman’s success are the individuals who risk thinking outside the box, which contributes equally to both triumph and defeat in the quest for excellence. Penni McRoberts Co-1st VP, Programs

A Message from Our Membership Chairman We extend a warm welcome to our new members, Rosemary Sieve, Mary and Wayne Silzel and Diane Wilkinson. We are pleased that you have joined us and encourage you to attend the various Town & Gown functions, such as Lunch at the Forum and our motor coach trips, as well as the many interesting, informative and entertaining Chapman events on campus. Present members, please watch for your renewal letter in the mail. Consider upgrading your membership to include your spouse, or invite a friend to join. New membership applications are accepted any time during the year. A membership table is located outside the door at each luncheon to answer questions and provide membership applications. If you would like more information, please call me at 714-532-3264. Judy Crum 3rd VP, Membership

Town Talk If there is one thing the past 18 months in Orange have proven, it’s that patience is always rewarded. Since last year, Orange has seen more than a few long-term projects come to fruition, proving that a good idea never dies. The Sports Center at Grijalva Park, a project 11 years in the making, and the implementation of a railroad Quiet Zone at the 16 crossings throughout the city are just two examples. This spring, two more long-awaited projects in the City of Orange have come to completion. After 40 years of planning and development, the Santiago Creek Bike Trail project opened to the public. The Trail is a six-mile long, paved, off-road path, winding along the beautiful Santiago Creek waterway

By Paul Sitkoff, City of Orange from Hart Park to Cannon Street. Now, bicyclists, joggers and nature lovers can enjoy views of the creek’s native vegetation and natural habitat. In Old Towne, the very long-awaited Wahoo’s Fish Tacos has opened in the historic Vineland Home on Chapman Avenue, just east of Lemon Street. While the addition of Wahoo’s is worth a celebration, the addition of another restored historic building in Old Towne Orange is priceless. The Vineland Home, originally built in 1886 – two years before Orange was incorporated – may be the oldest building of its kind still standing in Orange County. With help from the Orange Economic Development and the Community Development departments, Wahoo’s was able to restore this charming structure to its former glory. I guess one could say, “If you like Orange now, just wait. It always gets better.”

Spotlight on Melida Canfield For the past nine years, we have been honored to have the energetic and civic-minded Melida Canfield on the Town & Gown Board, where she has served in various capacities, from treasurer to her present position as co-1st vice president, programs. A native of Oak Park, Ill., Melida and her family moved to Santa Barbara in 1947, where she graduated from high school, earned her B.A. in Sociology from UC Santa Barbara, and married her high school sweetheart, a career Marine. Family is most important to Melida. She is the mother of three and the grandmother of seven – four boys and three girls. Her son and one of her granddaughters graduated from Chapman. While a busy homemaker raising her family, she developed her hobby of gourmet cooking, which she continues today with memberships in gourmet cooking groups.

Melida feels her life has been rewarding. She has had a successful career in central Orange County real estate for the past 36 years, is very involved in community work and is a life member of the Assistance League of Santa Ana. She is a 41-year member of Chapter RA of P.E.O, serving as State Convention Treasurer in 2010. This year, Melida is chairman of Crescendo, a support group for the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, and treasurer for the Pacific Symphony League. In 2010, Melida received the Athena Award, an honor given in recognition of volunteerism by the Central Orange County Alumni Panhellenic. For entertainment in her busy life of service, Melida enjoys an evening at the theater. We are grateful that, with all these responsibilities and accomplishments, Melida still finds time to serve on our Town & Gown Board. She is a woman to be admired and a pleasure to know. One of the lesser known facts about Chapman is that the university is home to an amazing collection of art. The collection is not found in one central location or housed in rooms or galleries with four walls. Chapman’s museum encompasses the entire campus, enriching one’s experience in every possible location. Our campus has become a museum without walls for everyone in the community to enjoy. One of the largest components of the Chapman collection is the Escalette Permanent Collection of Art, which recently was officially introduced to the

Orange County art community. It was established in 2010 by Chapman Trustee H. Ross Escalette and his wife, Phyllis. Their vision was to set into motion a new era for Chapman University as a center for art in Orange County. Comprising more than 700 pieces, the collection does not have a specific theme or focus; rather, it includes a variety of contemporary works by Southern California artists, as well as Russian iconography, African art, and prints by modern American and European masters, such as Rauschenberg, Lichtenstein and Nauman. Plans are underway to establish a student-docent art walking tour and an Escalette Collection speaker series that will highlight various aspects of the collection. As you venture across our beautiful campus, with its interesting architecture and pristine landscaping, I hope you will also turn your attention to the Escalette Permanent Collection of Art that is available for your enjoyment.

A group of T&G members get acquainted with Fernando Bolero’s “Gato” (cat) on our February “Modern Art in a Mansion” trip to the Weisman Art Foundation.

PLEASE NOTE If you are not a series subscriber or would like to bring a guest to our Forum luncheons, single tickets at $30 are always available. However, we urge you to make a reservation by the Monday before the luncheon, if possible. For the May 3 luncheon, please make your reservations by Monday, April 30, by calling Melida Canfield at 714-544-4436. Thank you.

Introducing Our Second Scholarship Recipient for 2011-12 In the winter issue of Talk of the Town, I introduced you to Steven Pollard, one of the two outstanding young men who are recipients of our scholarships this year. In this issue, I would like you to meet Kyle Martinez. Like Steven, Kyle has achieved academic excellence and has demonstrated service to the community. Following is his message: I am beyond grateful to Town & Gown for your generous support. There is absolutely no way I would be able to attend an institution as fine as Chapman University without the generosity of people like you. As a first-generation college student, this whole experience has been very exciting and rewarding for me. I am currently a thirdyear student, double-majoring in psychology and integrated educational studies. I plan to apply for a position with “Teach for America” when I graduate in 2013. Through prior jobs, service opportunities and classes, I have worked closely with the disabled community and hope to use “Teach for America” as a platform to quickly enter this field and bring about change. Though graduation means that my time at Chapman will come to a close, I am definitely looking forward to using the skills I have acquired here to give back to the community. I like to take advantage of the many opportunities Chapman has to offer outside the classroom. This past year, I served as an orientation assistant and enjoyed sharing my excitement about Chapman with incoming students. Since my second semester, I have been working in the Office of Financial Aid to support myself and have gained a lot of professional insight from my experience there. It is exciting to think of my next three semesters at Chapman and the countless memories still to be made before I graduate. We know these two deserving young men have a bright future ahead, and we are proud of them. Kathy Paukstis Director, Gift/Scholarship
