Town & Gown

TALK President’s Message Happy New Year! The calendar has turned another page and we are nearly half way through our Lunch at the Forum season for 2013– 2014. I suspect resolutions have been made and many already broken but, I can tell you for sure that the resolution of our board and membership remains 46 years strong. Town & Gown is such a remarkable, creative, dedicated group of individuals our members - determined to represent and champion Chapman University in every way possible! Of course, the easiest way to strengthen and support this fine organization is to bring someone to the Forum luncheons and introduce them to the outstanding lineup of professors and students who share with us new knowledge and insight from all their deliberate learning. Looking back, we had quite a year celebrating our 45th Anniversary of supporting the university. We raised over $10,000 with our Fund Our Scholar campaign, which was allocated directly to our student scholarship endowment fund, helping deserving students who might not otherwise be able to continue their educations. As members we can take pride in knowing that our endowment will provide student scholarships into perpetuity. Growing our endowed scholarship demonstrates that we value investing in these bright young minds, in this university and into the future. Thanks for being a member!

Lunch at the Forum Twentieth Season Continues with Can’t Help Singing and Chapman Filmed Entertainment: The Real Business Kicking off the second half of our Lunch at the Forum season on February 6, is Jeralyn Refeld, Inaugural Holder of the William Hall Visiting Professorship and voice instructor at the Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music, College of Performing Arts. Through words and music, Professor Refeld will present Can’t Help Singing that explores a personal and authentic look at Broadway greats, featuring stories and songs by Gershwin, Cole Porter, Lerner and Loewe, Kurt Weill and Stephen Sondheim. This great legacy of songs is sure to please, inspire and entertain. Ms. Refeld has presented her show to audiences in Europe and California and has enjoyed a professional career of over 20 years on Broadway and many of the great opera and concert stages of the world. Christoph Weinhart from Wurzburg, Germany, will accompany her on the piano. On March 6, Travis Knox ’93, producer and adjunct faculty at Dodge College of Film and Media Arts will speak on Chapman Filmed Entertainment: The Business of the Business. With students interested in the business of entertainment at increasing rates, more and more universities are starting film programs. Dodge College has consistently risen in the national rankings, breaking the top ten for the first time in 2012, but won’t be content until it reaches the top of the list. Dodge College recently launched an initiative that’s unique among all film schools: Chapman Filmed Entertainment has completed production on a thriller, Trigger, its first for-profit feature film heavily crewed by alumni and students. Come hear Chapman graduate and producer Travis Knox first try to answer the age-old question: “What exactly does a producer do?” before sharing stories about this collision of academia and Hollywood. You won’t want to miss the second half or our season and the first two programs. I look forward to seeing you at each luncheon. Linda Ruth 1st VP, Programs

Where You There To Meet Marcia Clark? Town & Gown members and friends were invited to a special reception to meet and greet former Los Angeles District Attorney and bestselling author Marcia Clark, prior to attending her lecture in Memorial Hall. Marcia was one of the featured authors at Chapman University’s Big Orange Book Festival (BOB). Pictured with Marcia Clark are T&G members Nancy and Ray Fleeman.

GEMS and MORE . . . The Gemology Institute of America, known as the GIA, in Carlsbad will be the destination of the next Town & Gown bus trip. Thursday, March 27, 2014, will be an adventure you will not want to miss. The GIA was established in 1931 and now sets the standard for the evaluation in the quality of gemstones. A special VIP docent led tour of the facility introduces you to the science and beauty of the large array of gems. Currently, the GIA is the site of a special exhibit “MORE IS MORE” The Tony Duquette-Hutton Wilkinson Jewelry Exhibit. Mr. Duquette was an artist, interior decorator, jewelry designer and all around design icon and his jewelry is truly one-ofa-kind creations. Additional surprises will be included in the trip flier. Paul Sitkoff city of orange

The Winds of Change Even in a place that cherishes its past as much as Orange, change is inevitable. In Orange, change means progress and continuing our tradition of quality service to our community. Recently, we changed the way approvals are acquired for several types of building projects such as construction, renovation or upgrades to private property. The new process allows some types of projects to receive administrative approval, instead of going before a review committee. This change will potentially save lots of time and money for permit seekers. Last month the Orange City Council appointed long-time Orange resident Erik Woolery to the position of City Treasurer. Mr. Woolery will complete the term left vacant by the untimely passing of former Treasurer Helen Walker. Helen was originally appointed as Treasurer in 1994, and was elected to the Office in 1996 and in every election since. Her loss is keenly felt by her family, City staff and the public whom she served. Oh, and you’ll be happy to know that the city continues to move forward in our quest to bring more parking to our downtown area. The Orange Depot Metrolink Parking Structure Project is continuing to move forward. There is still a lot of work to do before this joint venture between the OCTA and Orange breaks ground - which is tentatively planned for some time in 2015. But be rest assured we’re still… “On the right track.” The winds of change blow gently in Orange. We seem to like it that way!

The success of T&G’s 45th Fund Our Scholars will increase the amount of funds available for future Chapman students. Town & Gown Scholarship Yearly Distributions for Scholarships $11,000

Dr. Janeen Hill

Dean, Schmid College of Science and technology

Since it was founded in 2008, the Schmid College of Science and Technology has grown into one of the largest undergraduate colleges at Chapman, with 1,145 students and 11 majors, including, biochemistry and molecular biology, computer science, software engineering, psychology and health sciences. In addition, Schmid offers four master’s degrees, a Doctor of Physical Therapy and a Ph.D. in computational science. The number of science faculty has grown to 75 highly-regarded scholars dedicated to both teaching and conducting significant research. Schmid College has much to boast about. Our students win highly competitive Udall Scholarships and Fulbright Fellowships. They are accepted into prestigious Ph.D. programs and medical schools. Schmid faculty conduct research that increasingly finds its way into leading scholarly journals and the popular press. Our faculty receive national and international awards celebrating their strengths as both teachers and scientists. Our Centers for Excellence, numerous labs, the LEED Gold-certified Early Human and Lifespan Development Research Facility, the Smith Center for Individual and Family Therapy and programs like our Stroke Boot Camp provide students with real-world experience necessary for the science, health science and technology jobs available now and in the future. To enhance Chapman’s reputation even further and meet growing demand for science graduates, some innovative new facilities and programs are in the works. Our new Graduate Health Sciences Campus in Irvine will open in 2014 with our physical therapy program, followed in 2015 by a new physician assistant sciences program and School of Pharmacy. In 2018, Chapman will open a state-of-the-art Center for Science and Technology in Orange. This new home for Schmid College will house technically sophisticated classrooms and laboratories where teams of scientists and students use big data analytics to examine and find solutions to real problems faced by local industries. At Schmid College, our students learn science by doing science. I invite you to see for yourself what they’re doing by visiting our website at www.chapman.edu/scst or our blog at http://blogs.chapman.edu/scst/. You’ll be inspired by what you find.

DOTI DOES DOTI By now you know that this year’s American Celebration Opening Night in November was an exciting, sell-out performance and that Dr. Doti outdid himself portraying himself, with help from Julianne Argyros and about 75 talented Chapman students, in a send-up of the “reely big shew” he puts on for interested persons visiting the campus! The good news is that Town & Gown again was a major supporter of the event, taking an ad in the event program and selling well over 100 tickets. Everybody stayed to enjoy the delicious array of desserts and to congratulate the student performers, listen to the music and visit with friends. Betty Bartley Member, Opening Night Committee

Meet Honah Thompson, 20132014 Town & Gown Scholarship Recipient Excerpts from Honah’s message at the November 7, 2013 Lunch at the Forum: As a high school senior, stressing about what the next four years of my life would hold, I had yet to know that Chapman University would be the perfect institution to earn a degree, as well as offer countless opportunities for me to develop a newfound confidence in myself. I have spent the last few years of my life learning what it is to be a global citizen. Chapman nurtured my ambitious spirit in providing the means to explore my passions and develop new ones. As a sophomore, I was able to experience a semester abroad in South Africa where I volunteered at a foster home and realized that I will not regret choosing a career in social work. In Cape Town I attended the University of the Western Cape, continuing my studies in sociology and religious studies while developing close relationships with individuals from around the world. When I returned from my semester abroad, countless professors were available to help me readjust to the American environment and continue toward my academic and professional goals, and I am thankful for the resources Chapman has provided. After graduating from Chapman, I hope to spend a year building experience in the social services field in preparation for studying for a Master’s Degree in Social Work. Until then, I am learning as much as I can in the classroom and through hands-on experiences, such as my recently completed internship at the Child Abuse Prevention Center. As a self-supported student, I am grateful for the generous scholarship I received from Town & Gown. With it, I can focus on taking advantage of the opportunities available to help me reach my many goals for a full potential in life. Thank you for your support. We wish Honah success in all her endeavors and a bright and happy future. Rhea Black Director, Scholarship
