The baby of the bunch, the all-new CBR 650F includes a peppy in-line four delivering the most horsepower power of the three. Looks may be subjective but it’s easy to see that with youth comes a sportier look and more aggressive, forward leaning seating. Sporty doesn’t necessarily mean compact however, as it has a tad bit more leg room than its competitors. You also get a more up-to-date package with optional ABS and all digital info display.

The least expensive of the three, this bike comes from a long lineage of stealthy warriors. It’s that strong heritage that helps the Ninja deliver a striking blow against the competition in the form of a large aftermarket. Footpeg placement allows for deeper lean angles but doesn’t offer too much in the way of all day comfort— especially for long legged riders. Those with bad backs will appreciate the more upright riding positon the handlebars place the rider in.

*As tested by motorcycle.com

Bore x Stroke: 65.5mm x 44.5mm Transmission: 6-speed; multi-plate wet clutch Fuel Delivery: EFI with four-hole, two-direction, high-dynamic-range type fuel injectors Power: 65.35 hp/9,800 rpm, 38.50 ft-lb tq/8,400 rpm* Curb Weight: 470 pounds Seat Height: 30.9” MPG: 38.4* Old dogs don’t need new tricks as long as they’re loyal and do what you expect of them. That may be the reason why it’s been so long that the FZ6R hasn’t seen much of anything new other than paint and graphics. Doing all things really well (power delivery, comfort, and handling) is what keeps this bike at the top of many rider’s lists. Question is, with the competition evolving and offered with “new” tech like ABS, how many more iterations of BNGs (bold new graphics) can the FZ go through before its retired or finally completely reborn?

The Bikemaster 12V Power Adapter with Mount comes with everything you need to quickly setup a power supply off of your vehicle’s battery. The handle bar assembly easily adjusts to fit either 7/8” or 1” bars.

BIKEMASTER 12-VOLT POWER ADAPTER WITH MOUNT

M

otorcycle owners will often spend countless hours and hundreds if not thousands of dollars customizing their bike to make it look better, ride better, or be more comfortable. But sometimes it’s the simplest things that can make the biggest difference in the enjoyment and satisfaction you get out of your motorcycle. One area that is ripe for simple bolton motorcycle accessories that can make a world of difference on your journey is your handlebars. From air-cushioned motorcycle grips and throttle assist devices to convexed mirrors and GPS units there are countless items that can be installed onto or swapped out with other components on your handlebars. If you do a lot of long-distance traveling aboard your motorcycle and find that all your battery operated devices such as your MP3 player, smartphone, and GPS are constantly running out of juice then you’ll definitely want to think about adding some kind of power supply to recharge your gear, such as Bikemaster’s 12-Volt Power Adapter and Mount ($22.95, part# 326-6184).

Installation of the 12v Power Adapter is really straight forward, all you have to do is find a suitable place to mount onto your handlebar and determine if you need to use the included rubber reducer.

Visit ChapMoto.com for more info and options

10

In just a few short minutes and with very basic hand tools (a screw driver and 10mm box wrench) you can have power running from your motorcycle battery to your handlebars so you can power up all your gadgets. The Bikemaster Power Adapter will fit 7/8” and 1” handlebars and comes with plenty of electrical lead to run from the bars to your battery. Best of all, the pig tail wiring lead has ring terminals at one end that connect to the battery and has a plug on its opposite end similar to what you’ll find with most battery powered heated gear and battery maintenance devices. That means you can simply unplug and remove the Bikemaster Power Adapter, leave the pig tail connected to your battery and quickly and easily plug into to a Battery Tender when storing your bike. In order to power up all your USB devices you’ll need a USB Power Adapter. Bikemaster offers a Dual Port USB Adapter ($14.95, part# 315-2234) which allows you to connect and power up two devices at once. You can buy the USB adapter individually or in a kit with the 12-Volt Handlebar mount. You can watch a video on how to install this product on the Chaparral Motorsports YouTube channel.

To power or charge devices like your cell phone, GPS, or other electronic accessories, Bikemaster offers this Dual USB Power Adapter. Similar to a cigarette lighter, it simply plugs into the 12V Power Adapter and has two USB ports for multiple devices.

VANCE & HINES FUELPAK

C

hanging out the stock exhaust system on your motorcycle is the easiest way to free up power from your engine. However, installing a performance exhaust system is only the first step. There are two other important things to address when looking to improve the performance of your engine; stuffing more air into your cylinders and then getting everything properly tuned and dialed via an EFI tuner so that your bike is running smoothly and achieving an optimal air/fuel ratio. Messing with your bike’s EFI system may sound intimidating to some, but trust us, Vance & Hines has really simplified the process with its Fuelpak. Whether you own a late-model Harley or a metric motorcycle your bike is electronically fuel injected and is equipped with an electronic control unit (ECU) that’s programmed to deliver fuel to the motor based on an air/fuel ratio for the stock air filter and exhaust system. While the ECU can self-adjust for environmental factors such as temperature and altitude, it can’t adjust for mechanical changes like adding performance parts. Straight from the manufacturer most motorcycles already have a lean air/fuel map to meet emissions

standards. When you install an aftermarket exhaust, your air/fuel ratio changes to an even leaner condition which can affect the performance of your motorcycle and keep you from realizing the full potential of the exhaust and high flow filter you installed. The Fuelpak from Vance & Hines can get you back in tune quickly and easily. The Fuelpak allows you to add or subtract fuel via the push button interface for a precise range of refinement in your air/fuel ratio and to deliver

a custom tailored fuel map. Other systems may require extensive and expensive dyno tuning or the need to download/upload maps via a pc and then flash the ECU to get your bike running perfectly. With the Fuelpak you simply connect the tuner in line with your bike’s electronics, set the Vance & Hines corresponding codes and you’re off and running. In addition to adjustability, Vance & Hines is continually developing new tunes/maps for a variety of components and have created a library of more than 10,000 map configurations. So that means if you decide to ditch your Vance & Hines exhaust system and go with some other aftermarket brand or other performance components, chances are Vance & Hines has already defined the settings you need to get your bike running optimally. Ease of installation and use are key benefits of the Fuelpak. In most cases it plugs directly into the factory wiring harness and ECU using a t-tap and OEM style connectors. Once the Fuelpak is installed all you have to do is input the settings based on the year, make and model of your bike, the size of your engine, and the modifications you have made. Should you ever want/need to remove the Fuelpak

you can easily do so and your motorcycle will return to operating at its original factory settings. Installing the Vance & Hines Fuelpak will not only get your air/fuel ratio dialed in, it will help deliver a snappier and more responsive throttle, making for a much more fun ride. To see how easy the Fuelpak is to connect and operate be sure to watch our step-by-step install video on the Chaparral Motorpsorts YouTube channel. Visit ChapMoto.com for more EFI options

Vance & Hines maintains a massive library of maps for various motorcycles, engine sizes, exhausts, intake systems, and engine performance enhancements.

The Fuelpak allows you to add or subtract fuel via the push button interface for a precise air/fuel ratio. FUELPAK SETTINGS EXAMPLE: Shown to the right are the Fuelpak settings for a 2013 Harley-Davidon Softail with a 103ci engine, high-flow air filter, and Vance & Hines Big Radius exhaust.

Programming with the Fuelpak is extremely easy. You simply start at Mode 1 and adjust the value up or down according to your map. Then you hit the Mode button to go to Mode 2 and repeat the process until all the modes are set.

MAKIN’ MOVIES:

SPORTS ACTION CAMERAS & ACCESSORIES

T

hey say a picture is worth a thousand words. If that’s true then does that mean a video is priceless? That may just be the case with the evolution of mobile video devices becoming so compact, durable, and capable of delivering real time (or near real time) feeds with impeccable quality. A picture is great to stare at and admire,

but an awesome video can pull you through the screen and make you feel like you’re part of the action, especially when it’s shot from the point of view of a motorcycle helmet, the handlebars, or any of the myriad locations you can mount a sports action camera. Speaking of action, the action sports scene has been at the forefront of creating some of the most captivating videos. While GoPro may be the leader of this segment, over the past several years other companies like Drift and WASPcam have joined the game offering consumers an assortment of helmet cameras for videoing all their exploits. Simple in design and easy to use, these action cameras make it nearly impossible to take a bad video or picture—even when mounted on a motorcycle helmet. To help ensure you get the best hands free videos from your helmet there are a ton of accessories ranging from helmet camera mounts, lenses, remotes, and microphones.

Go Like a Pro

Super lightweight with a fixed lens, the Hero cameras capture hi-def video and photos that can make the most inexperienced videographer/photographer look like a pro. Since selling its first camera system in 2004, GoPro has continually evolved with its most advanced iterations being the HERO4 Silver and Black. Truly setting the bar for first person/action camera video the Silver and Black HERO4 cameras deliver incredible image quality, fast frame rates and highly rugged durability. These two new cameras share similar great features such as 12MP burst photos at 30 frames per second, new night photo and night lapse modes, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth so you can connect to the GoPro App or Smart Remote, a powerful new audio system that records clean, high-quality sound, and much more. Both cameras offer Protune which expands the camera’s capabilities by allowing customizable settings for color, ISO limit, white balance, sharpness and exposure. Adjusting and dialing in the new GoPro cameras has gotten much easier as well with intuitive and easy to navigate menus and a new dedicated button that allows you to quickly access and adjust camera settings.

A LEG TO STAND ON

MOTO STANDS

Doing your own service, maintenance, and performance upgrades on your dirt bike can be a great form of relaxation. Not only will it take your mind off of things that might be bothering you but it also helps you become more knowledgeable about what’s going on with your ride and aware of other issues that may need to be addressed. Whether prepping for your next track day, swapping handlebars, or replacing a bad gasket, setting your dirt bike up on a moto stand will make the task(s) at hand much safer as you push, pull, twist, and torque on various components. A stand can also make changing your oil, lubing your chain, or swapping out a rear tire much easier as you’ll have better access to tight spaces, or will be able to remove parts like axles, brake calipers, and wheels with ease.

You don’t have to be a tough “biker” type to slog through an unexpected deluge—but it sure does help if you have the right motorcycle gear to start with. Off The Line

2015 CAN-AM

MAVERICK X DS 1000R TURBO

T

he 2015 Can-Am side-by-side lineup got big boost this year—a turbo boost that is. The powersports manufacturer introduced its new two seater Maverick X ds and four seater Maverick Max X ds models available with factory installed turbochargers mated to the already potent Rotax 1000R engine. This is the first time in the UTV industry a machine has been offered from the manufacturer with a turbocharger. Outfitted with a Mitsubishi turbo charger, the boost in performance kicks the output of the 1000R engine from 101 horsepower to a whopping 121-horspeower with industry-leading torque, 40-percent more than its closest competitor according to Can-Am. The turbo’s electronically controlled wastegate automatically adjusts boost pressure for optimal performance in any condition and altitudes up to 5,000-ft. An air-to-air intercooler outfitted with a built-in fan keeps cooled air flowing to the engine even in hot temp conditions. The Maverick X ds includes a new rear frame section providing for a longer wheelbase (pushed out to 88”) which helps keep the UTV steady at high speeds and provides excellent cornering and a

44

tight turning radius. Other handling enhancements include 16” of travel in the rear with the aid of redesigned Torsional Trailing Arms and a compact five-link suspension setup equipped with exclusive Fox 2.5 Podium RC2 shocks. Front suspension has been improved with redesigned double A-arms and offers 15” of travel. Fully adjustable, the front and rear FOX 2.5 Podium RC2 Piggyback shocks can be tuned for Dual Speed Compression (DSC), rebound, and have dual rate springs with infinite preload allowing users to fine tune the system for any driving style, terrain or course. The rear shocks can be dialed in even further with a position-sensitive Bottom-Out Control and a spring crossover to improve comfort, traction and smooth out what would normally be large jarring bumps. UTV fans should definitely be thrilled about this new model from Can-Am, the myriad improvements and the fact that a turbo is now available straight-from-the-factory ought to get the rest of the competitors looking to jump into the turbo game. Chaparral Motorsports is an authorized Can-Am dealer, 800-841-2960.

Exhaust The dual exhaust uses tuned manifold lengths and resonator chamber to create more flow.

Seating Dual bucket seats cradle occupants for a race-like feel while still delivering comfort for long rides with a fully adjustable driver’s seat and tilt steering wheel with 10” of adjustability.

88”. (223.5 cm)

Fully adjustable front and rear FOX 2.5 Podium RC2 Piggyback shocks can be tuned for Dual Speed Compression (DSC), rebound, and can be fine-tuned for any driving style or terrain.

Wheels and Tires The Maverick sits on new 14” aluminum beadlock wheels with 28” Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires which helps provide for 13” of ground clearance.

Belts and Transmission CVT Pulley System Can-Am reduced heat and improved belt performance by providing the CVT pulley system with 68-percent more airflow by improving the design and performance of the air inlets and outlets.

Belts and Transmission Outfitted with a Zylon-reinforced belt that is much stronger than regular belts, the Continually Variable Transmission (CVT) on the turbo equipped models feature a completely redesigned driven pulley with a new Quick Response System (QRS) that offers better power transfer and faster engagement time.

Two Wheel Mania | 1800 841 2960 | www.ChapMoto.com

Mounted into the body work just behind the driver/ passenger head rests is an air-to-air intercooler with a built-in fan to keep cooler air flowing to the turbo for better power production.

Air Box A large Donaldson air box is positioned close to the engine for maximum airflow to meet the turbo’s demand for clean air.

Personal Profile For those that are into mini moto, you may recognize Andy from his incredible 100-foot tabletop jump at the Lake Elsinore track back in ‘04/’05. Riding a highly modded 50 that had been bumped up to 118cc and outfitted with a 6-speed, it took Andy several attempts but after pinning it in 5th gear he finally cleared the flat and landed smoothly, well into the backside transition. Of course he had to hit it several more times after that and it was one of those jumps that landed him on the cover of Mini Moto Magazine. Andy has been working at Chaparral Motorsports for the past eight years. And as one of our vehicle sales managers you can often find him behind a computer helping our sales staff procure the best deals for our customers. While he doesn’t spend nearly as much time racing as he used to, Andy still hits the MX track one or two times a week mixing in a bit of competitive racing

hile most of the other three-year-olds

were busy playing make-believe with their miniature toy motorcycles, Andy Anaya was

learning how to ride the real deal; twisting the throttle on a Suzuki JR50 around the open riding areas of the iconic Saddleback MX Park. It was starting out at an early age that helped Andy become so talented when it came to anything with two wheels. Andy started his motocross racing career at the age of 7 ripping around Perris Raceway on a CR60 and progressed from there stepping up to larger, more powerful dirt bikes as his skills improved. Around the age of 14 his interest in two-wheels shifted from horsepower to pedal power when his parents purchased the Riverside Raceway Bicycle Track. Andy spent several years spinning his feet racing in the ABA before he jumped back onto a dirt bike

with friendly free riding. You’ll often find him on his 2014 Suzuki RMZ450 jamming through the whoops at tracks like Milestone, Glen Helen, Competitive Edge or Racetown 395. With his extensive racing background, Andy knows what performance mods work best for him, so he’s spent a considerable amount of time dialing in his RMZ with components like a titanium Yoshimura RS-4 Dual Outlet Exhaust with carbon fiber end caps, GPR Stabilizer and top clamp, Pro Taper handlebars, and his suspension finely tuned by his friend over at Showa. When he’s not at the track or Chaparral, Andy is usually with his family camping and riding trails. His three girls take turns darting around the campsites on a 50 with the youngest putting around with the assistance of training wheels. While he enjoys riding his dirt bike on the trails with his family, Andy recently bought a Can-Am Maverick Max which allows them all to pile in and enjoy the excitement of off-roading together. Andy says his dream is to own a KTM 500EXC so that he can just ride out of his back yard and hit the hills and trails of Oak Hills or split his time between off-roading and surface streets on his commute into work.

shredding motocross tracks. At the age of 19 he turned pro racing 125s in the Supercross Series and 250s in Nationals. In the mid-late ‘90s he spent the majority of his time on the west coast circuits where he banged bars with the likes of Jeff Emig, Kevin Windham, and Jeremy McGrath. When the 4-strokes started gaining momentum Andy found there was more money to be won and began hitting the east coast circuit spending his summers racing in the Eastern 4-Stroke Nationals. Throughout his racing career Andy achieved a slew of accolades including several podium finishes and a multitude of top five and top ten finishes.

Tech Tips/How To

DIY TIRE CHANGES

IT’S NOT AS DIFFICULT AS YOU THINK

You can save quite a bit of money by doing most of your own service and maintenance work on your motorcycle. Sure, more in-depth things like full engine rebuilds may be beyond most people’s skill level and should be left to the professionals, but things like oil changes and brake services can easily be performed by the average home mechanic. One thing some people often get intimidated by is changing tires on a dirt bike. If you have the right tools and take your time you can become pretty proficient at MX tires swaps. We stopped into the Chaparral Tire Department, where one of the techs pulled out one of their practice tire and rim setups so we could show you how easy it is to remove and install a dirt bike tire.

2

VALVE CORE

To get started, remove the valve core and then loosen up the nut on the rim lock. You don’t want to remove the nut completely, just make sure the rim lock moves freely by pushing on the stem. If it’s your first time changing a rear tire you may want to start on the rotor side as it’ll be easier on your knuckles when you start working on the jagged sprocket side.

1

GETTING STARTED

When performing your own dirt bike tire changes it’s best to have the right tools for the job and it all starts with a good set of tire irons. The Extra Long Tire Iron from Motion Pro ($15.99, part# 315-0450) is very handy because the long length provides extra leverage and you can work with either the curved or straight end depending on your needs. They are sold individually, experts can usually get away with only two tire irons but having three on hand is makes the job much easier. While not absolutely necessary, a tire changing stand can come in

process in several spots around the rim.

4

LIFT THE LIP

Once the bead is broke free, grab a second tire iron and then dig in a couple inches on either side of the bead lock. Use the tire irons to lift the lip of the tire over the rim.

7

AIR IT OUT

Once you have the first side of the tire off the rim then remove the tube. If your tube is in good shape and you are going to try and reuse it, fold it up to help get all the air out.

Hint: spraying a little bit of soapy water on the tire as you work can help the tire slip on and off the rim easier.

8

FLIP IT

Next, flip the wheel over so you can work on the other side. There are two ways to get the other side of the tire

off the rim. You can either work downward and push the tire off the bottom side of the rim or you can work upwards and flip the tire over the top side of the rim. Similar to the other side start by working two irons on either side of the rim lock.

OVER THE RIM

Next, work the tire over the rim with the tire iron. It’s easiest to take small bites out of the tire (move the tire iron around the rim only a couple inches at a time) rather than trying to lift a larger chunk of tire over the rim.

9

OFF THE RIM

ADD SOME SUDS

After lubing the tire with some soapy water, work the top side of the tire onto the rim; again start with two tire irons on either side of the rim lock and make sure not to get a hold of the tube as you work.

Portable Tire Changing Stand With Bead Breaker Even cruiser and street bike riders can perform their own tire changes with this Portable Tire Changing Stand with Bead Breaker from Ocelot Racing ($94.99, part# 1241039). Often the biggest struggle with changing your own street bike tire is breaking the bead of the tire off the rim, it can be a real pain if you don’t have the right tool and you can end up scratching or damaging your wheel. The nice thing about this tire changing stand is that the bead breaker lever is adjustable so you can get it set up perfectly on any size wheel/tire from 16- to 21 inches in diameter. Also, the length of the heavy duty handle makes

17

BEAD BUDDY

A little trick and another tool to help things go a little easier is a Motion Pro Bead Buddy II ($14.99, part# 3158471). The topside of the Bead Buddy locks around one of the wheel spokes and the bottom side keeps the bead in

it easy to get good leverage on really stubborn tires. It has a wide base to provide a solid working foundation and the fact that it’s so compact means it won’t take up a ton of room in your garage. Product Spotlight On top of increased mileage, Metzler’s new Sportec M7 RR delivers superior levels of handling and safety across all road surfaces and weather.

METZELER SPORTEC M7 RR

T

he latest tire from Metzeler, the Sportec M7 RR, is a road use supersport tire created to ensure the highest levels of handling and safety, even in the difficult situations encountered on the road, such as wet, rough and dirty asphalt. In addition to offering excellent grip, the highest levels of handling and safety, riders will greatly appreciate a 20-percent increase in mileage in comparison to its predecessor the Sportec M5 Interact. Metzeler spent exhausting amounts of time competing in prestigious road racing events such as the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, the North West 200, the Southern 100, the Metzeler Ulster Grand Prix, and the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix utilizing the treacherous courses as testing grounds for the development of this new tire. Through these rigorous testing grounds Metzeler achieved 17 podiums last year with 10 victories. Designed from the ground up, the Sportec M7 RR features new compounds, the use of innovative materials in the structure, all-new profiles, and a brand new tread pattern. Sportec M7 RR is the latest evolution of the Sportec range and is in line with keeping up with the development and technologies of new motorcycles.

Who is Sportec M7 RR for?

The Sportec M7 RR provides a new level of supersport performance and has been designed for riders who prefer a sporty riding style and use their bike in all types of riding situations from daily city commuting to long weekend tours, and who always need grip no matter the conditions of the road surface, weather, or temperature. 60

Compounds

A brand-new range of compounds was developed for the Sportec M7 RR. The new compounds features a high silica content which is able to offer sporty performance on dry surfaces in high temperatures as well on wet roads in lower temperatures. The key to this technological breakthrough in compounds resides in the exclusive and patented mixing process that is able to provide compounds of the highest quality, maximizing the dispersion of all components in the polymer matrix, and reaching a high level of homogeneity. The front tire is a mono compound with 100-percent silica and the rear is a dual compound. The shoulder on the rear has a 100-percent silica compound which provides chemical grip on both dry and wet surfaces and is supported by a harder compound in the substrate that guarantees the highest levels of stability and cornering precision. The same harder compound can also be found in the middle (a 45mm wide patch) of the tread to provide for longer wear/higher mileage.

Structure

To support the work of the profiles, allow the compound to have traction on the surface, and to keep the grooves open in the footprint area, an appropriate structure was developed. The radial carcass was composed of a special version in rayon; this structure is much more rigid and able to maintain its shape under conditions of greater stress and deformation from the load. Above the radial structure is a 0 degree steel belt with the Interact technology featuring different tension zones that offers a progressive behavior

Two Wheel Mania | 1800 841 2960 | www.ChapMoto.com

Two Wheel Mania | Issue 1 | May 2015

at every lean angle. The Interact technology is the evolution of the technology of the 0 degree steel belt and is an integral part of the development of all Metzeler tires that use the steel belt. Combining the Interact structure with the technology applied to the compounds, all the elements of the complex structure-belt-compound blend perfectly by offering a continuous fine-tuning of performance in different lean angles.

Profile

The profiles of Sportec M7 RR are characterized by the composition of different radii, designed to encourage an immediate descent into motorcycle lean and an increase of the contact patch while cornering.

Tread

With the clear objective of obtaining a sporty behavior that must be maintained on wet and dirty roads, the layout of the grooves on the M7 RR were designed to ensure grip on dry surfaces and at the same time provide water drainage and excellent cornering stability in wet conditions. The longitudinal grooves in the tread are interrupted

by elements of the compound that improve the stability of the tread, the regularity of wear, and increase the thrusts in acceleration. These elements in the compound also contribute to the grooves keeping their shape when the tire is in contact with the asphalt to allow for water drainage. In the lateral grooves, the depth decreases gradually towards the shoulder area to increase the compactness and lateral thrust when cornering at maximum lean angle in dry conditions. The width of the grooves, on the contrary, increases toward the shoulder area to ensure an effective area for water drainage at increased lean angles. The land/sea ratio (ratio of rubber to sipes: rubber being the land and sipes being the sea) has also been revised. In comparison to the Sportec M5 Interact, the land/sea ratio has increased from 12.6-percent to 14.7-percent on the front and decreased from 12.6-percent to 11.1-percent on the rear. This change in design was made to accommodate the fact that the front tire is the one that has the most important role in the drainage of water on the road. To get your side-by-side street legal you’re going to have to add a few accessories or required components to meet federal and your state’s requirements. The only problem is there isn’t a universal list that you can go by to meet on-highway vehicle requirements. All states are different and even some counties or municipalities may differ as well, so the best thing to do before you start spending any money trying to convert your RZR or Arctic Cat Wildcat to a street legal machine is check with your state’s motor vehicle department and make sure it’s even possible to legally drive your UTV on the highway or city streets. You may also want to check with the area or community that you’ll be driving in and make sure they don’t have any special or additional requirements beyond what the state lists. If you find out that it is possible to register your vehicle for highway use then make a list of everything that’s required and start modding your machine.

Here are some of the more common things that are required in order for your UTV to be considered legal for highway use:

TWM List

THE LIST

10 MOTORCYCLE MOVIES EVERY ENTHUSIAST SHOULD WATCH Making a definitive list of the top 10 motorcycle movies is like trying to debate the best motorcycle ever built. So, to make things a bit less volatile we decided to omit the word “Top” and simply list ten motorcycle movies that we think every motorcycle junkie should watch. Not completely listed in order of importance, we started with the three most iconic movies have had a major impact and influence on many riders.

1. The Wild One Baby-faced Marlon Brando and his motorcycle gang roll into a small California town and wreak havoc when their rivals arrive. Based on over-sensationalized events that occurred during an American Motorcyclists Association Meet in Hollister, CA in 1947, the movie was America’s first glimpse into outlaw motorcycle gangs. The image of Marlon Brando’s character (Johnny) has had an influence on motorcycle riders for generations, in particular, the Perfecto leather jacket has become the quintessential “Biker” jacket mimicked and copied a dozen times over by other companies through the years.

2. Easy Rider Two drug dealing friends set off on a cross country motorcycle ride to experience America via the open road while dealing with societal constraints because of their free-wheeling lifestyle. When released, Easy Rider spoke to the generation of the time, its social commentary covering topics such as hippie culture and drug use. While the story line, cinematography, dialog, and low-budget vibe of the movie may not resonate with younger generations, the movie was the third highest grossing film in 1969, and has since been added to the Library of Congress National Registry. With its extreme rake, ape hangers, and flag adorned mustang-style gas tank the Captain America bike has come to represent the iconic chopper—but the Billy Bike is way cooler.

3. On Any Sunday Many families have certain items that get passed from generation to generation, from great grandpa’s cuff links to aunt Ellie’s serving platter. For a moto family, that heirloom is a copy of On Any Sunday. Probably one of the most fun and free spirited documentaries ever filmed—even the narration is entertaining—if you don’t have the itch to kick over your dirt bike and tear up the local vacant lot or jump on your bicycle and see how far you can ride a wheelie after watching this movie then you watched the wrong flick.

4. The World’s Fastest Indian

Who knew a bottle of black shoe polish could help you break the 200 mph mark across the Bonneville Salt Flats on a 1920 Indian Scout? A loose biographical account of an old man and his old motorcycle, this movie shows one man’s perseverance to achieve his dream of acquiring a land speed record. You quickly admire Burt Munroe for his tenacity, spry humor, and determination. Just so you know this movie has been known to cause your allergies to act up— usually in the form of watery eyes.

5. TT: Closer To The Edge

Originally released in 3-D (can you imagine watching a two-wheeled rocket coming straight at you through a giant screen at 190mph), this documentary covers the 2010 season of the Isle of Man TT races and focuses on race favorites Ian Hutchinson, Guy Martin and others. While watching the racing can cause you to tense up and bring a knot to your stomach, the incredible scenery and cinematography often helps you forget that The Isle of Man is the oldest and deadliest (nearly 250 deaths to date) motorcycle race in history.

6. Dust to Glory

The days of cowboys blazing across the old west on their horses is long gone. But for those who want to recapture that spirit of blasting across a desert scape, there’s a dirt bike and thousands of miles of scrub brush amongst the wild south. Such is the infamous Baja 1000. Covering the best and most dangerous aspects of off road racing from four wheels to two, Dust to Glory shows the mental and physical strength required to take on one of the most challenging off road races in the world.

7. Faster/Fastest

Filmed nearly ten years apart, these two documentaries cover the incredible riding skills of the top MotoGP riders as they throttle their bikes into the red line and push their tires to the edge of adhesion at triple digit speeds. Even if you’ve never watched MotoGP you’ll quickly fall in love with the speed and graceful finesse of riders like Valentino Rossi, Max Biaggi, Casey Stoner and others.

8. Why We Ride It’s unfortunate, but there lies a division amongst motorcycle riders simply based on the kind of motorcycle you ride. Often when two riders meet for the first time the wrong question arises first, “What do you ride?” with an immediate judgement made simply by the response. The real question we should be asking each other, “Why do you ride?” is what this film sets to answer with awesome interviews. This is the film that you need to watch with all your non-riding friends.

9. No Ordinary Passenger

If you were 86-years-old would you monkey around on a sidecar speeding across a racetrack with your body mere inches off the ground? Probably not. 1953 World Sidecar Champion, Stan Bibben, does exactly that as he recounts his career as one of the top sidecar racers of his time. Available on the New York Times website, this short documentary is a great way to kill seven minutes while scrolling. around online.

10. Any Bikersploitation Movie From the ‘60s/’70s If you’re looking for some mindless entertainment. You can’t go wrong with any of the biker flicks from the ‘60s and ‘70s. The acting is garbage, the special effects are comedy, and with titles like Werewolves On Wheels, you can expect the storylines to be cheesier than a tray of 7-Eleven nachos. But it’s these flaws that make these movies so fun, and there are often some pretty cool choppers in them to boot. There are a few standouts that have become “cult classics” like The Wild Angels, Hells Angels on Wheels, and Born Losers. Visit us at ChapMoto.com

Chap Moto Throwback Thursday Supercross Pre-Party and Bike Night This past January we hosted our first ever winter (or at least what we here in Southern California consider to be winter) bike night event and it was a great success. Sponsored by Parts Unlimited, the event was a combination Bike Night and Supercross Anaheim 3 pre-party with street bike, cruiser, and dirt bike enthusiasts from all over Southern California in attendance. Attendees admired custom motorcycles and top of the line race bikes, chatted with parts and gear vendors, and got to meet and snap photos with top Supercross and motocross racers. The event took place on a Thursday evening, so it only made sense to turn it into a Throwback Thursday themed party with iconic racers from the past such as Jeremy McGrath, Broc Glover, Mike Bell, Sebastien Tortelli, Jeff Emig, and Larry Brooks on hand to sign autographs and meet fans. There was also a Throwback Gear contest

with contestants digging into the dark corners of their closets and showing up in bright neons and Oakley blades for a chance to win prizes for best dressed. Of course we had a strong group of current top riders like Blake Baggett, Jessy Nelson, Shane McElrath, Davi Millsaps, and Darryn Durham from teams like Troy Lee Designs/KTM, Suzuki/Yoshimura, and Kawasaki on hand getting everyone excited for the Supercross race on Saturday evening. The Chaparral parking lot was lined with massive big rigs from companies such as Thor, Moose Racing, Drag Specialties and vendors showing off their latest products. Inside the store we had an assortment of gear, casual apparel, and accessories all at special Throwback Pricing. Everyone enjoyed themselves, it was a great first time event and we look forward to possibly doing it again next winter.
