Coming in at just over three pounds, this helmet is not only the lightest of the bunch but is also by far the most aggressive looking. The carbon fiber shell not only helps keep the overall weight low but also adds to the sleek look of the helmet. Those that like to stand apart from the crowd will do so with the unique shell shape of the AX-8. With its prominent, pointed chin the helmet exudes speed while delivering excellent aerodynamics and a futuristic look. Beyond its distinct styling the AX-8 features key safety elements as well. The rear of the helmet was designed to maximize the interaction with back protectors, and the chin bar has a shock absorber function incorporated into it to help prevent and reduce impact traumas.

The only modular helmet of the three, the GT-920 is also the least expensive, but that doesn’t mean it lacks in performance or features. Outfitted with a KwikWick II antimicrobial fabric and a retractable SpeedView sun visor, the GT-920 is all about helping you ride further and in more comfort by protecting you from the ill effects of the sun. Both the face shield and the sun visor are coated with Scorpion’s exclusive EverClear anti-fog to provide a clear view in all weather conditions. Many people will appreciate the sporty look of the GT-920 with its subtle body lines and integrated rear spoiler.

EPS liner, emergency quick release system (E.Q.R.S.) EPS Ventilation: Six air intake ports, six exhaust ports Sizes: XS - XXL While the Shoei brand often comes with a premium price it’s for good reason; the helmets are exceptionally well made, deliver a great fit, and are built with safety as a top priority. The X-Fourteen is no exception with its super strong shell featuring a proprietary technology integrating a six-ply matrix with hand-laid interwoven layers of fiberglass with organic fibers and resin. With the E.Q.R.S. emergency personnel can remove the cheekpads allowing for the helmet to be removed with minimal stress placed on the head or neck. Rather than relying on foam padding, the X-Fourteen is the only one that offers four different shell sizes to provide a custom fit for a variety of head shapes and dimensions. Many will appreciate the ability to meticulously fine tune the temperature inside the helmet with its plethora of intake and exhaust vents.

360FLY

HD VIDEO CAMERA

T

he sports action camera market has been a pretty hot segment the past five years with a steady flow of new companies joining the fray. Of course it’s great to have a selection of cameras to choose from and competition helps keep pricing fairly reasonable. The problem is, until recently every sports cam company was essentially offering the same thing: high-def video and hi-res photos from an easily mountable, compact, and lightweight camera. All that has changed now that 360Fly has entered the scene. Recording and delivering highly interactive videos, 360Fly ($399.99, part# 725-360flyblk) offers a truly different

Included in the tube-shaped packaging is the 360Fly panoramic 360 HD video camera, rechargeable internal lithium battery, power cradle and USB cable, action camera adaptor, tilt mount with curved and flat baseplates, mic plug and strap lanyard, neoprene protective pouch, and quick start guide with warranty card and safety information. 12

video capture experience that helps viewers immerse themselves into what they are watching. Similar to a fly’s 360 degree field of view, the camera records 360 degree horizontal and 240 degree vertical high def video—hence the 360Fly moniker. Offering an extremely wide field of view, recording 1504 x 1504 pixel resolution at 30 fps, the 360Fly camera provides MPEG-4 compressed video format to obtain high quality video with lower data size making it easy to edit and share straight from your mobile device via the 360Fly app. Housed in a unique golf ball like case, the spherical lens points straight up while a three axis sensor and accelerometer maintains proper orientation and reliable motion sensing while enjoying high action activities. Sure you can record similar 360 degree, interactive videos with other cams, like the GoPro, but it will require multiple cameras (often 6 or more), a special rig/mount, and software to stich all the videos together. The 360Fly is one simple unit that requires no video stitching or special software. The 360Fly is compact and lightweight making it idealfor mounting on top of a helmet, attached to a handlebar or just about anywhere else. The rugged housing is able to withstand moderate abuse (shock resistant to nearly 5 feet) extreme conditions, and is dust resistant. Unlike other cameras that require an additional case for underwater recording, with the plug covering the built-in microphone port this cam is water resistant to a depth of about 165 feet. The camera is outfitted with 32 GB of internal memory, which might not be a ton of storage, but it works out well with two hour recording time of the built-in, Li-Polymer, 1600mA, battery—reachable via usb. Operating the 360Fly is extremely easy as there is only one button that powers up/down the device and starts/ stops recording. There’s no screen or interface to deal with so no superfluous options or settings to have to fuss with. Simply long press the power button and the camera

Two Wheel Mania | 1800 841 2960 | www.ChapMoto.com

Two Wheel Mania | Issue 4 | March 2016

powers on/off, then a quick press begins/ends recording. A blinking LED informs you if the camera is on, pairing, or recording. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, the camera pairs great with smart phones and with the 360Fly app you can use your device as a viewfinder, or edit and share videos to your social media feeds. The app is available for both Apple and Android devices and there’s a desktop version as well. When watching videos on a smart phone users can either swipe the screen to rotate the viewing angle or simply hold the camera in front of them and then move in the direction they want to see the video from. Rather than a passive viewing experience, the viewer now becomes integrated into the video, changing the perspective from what’s ahead to what’s behind, on the sides, above, or down below. The lens does have its limitations and depending on where the camera is mounted limits the downward view but still delivers an awesome experience. Add in the optional 360Fly Mobile VR Viewer ($39.99, part# 725-flyvrblk) and you can take the viewing experience into the exciting world of virtual reality. Utilizing Google’s Cardboard version 2.0 and a smart phone, viewers can immerse themselves into the footage simply by looking up, down and side to side. Other optional accessories include a Handlebar Mount ($29.99, part# 725-bmblk), Flat Adhesive Mount ($14.99, part# 725-3fabmb) for securing the camera to helmets, and the 360fly Action Camera Adapter ($19.99, part# 725-acablk) which allows you to mount the camera to GoPro mounts you might already have.

Even high profile athletes like professional motocross/Supercross racer Chad Reed have endorsed the camera. The 360Fly camera has already been getting great responses from early testers and users. Even high profile athletes like professional motocross/Supercross racer Chad Reed have endorsed the camera; and the company is one of Chad’s sponsors for his 2016 Supercross season. Most recently Bell helmets announced that it was coming out with a line of helmets with the camera integrated into them for a smoother and lower profile look. Nestled into the top of the helmet the camera goes almost unnoticed and word is it will be removable with the ability to mount into other Bell helmets deigned for the 360Fly camera.

The Google Cardboard accessory allows you to view footage in virtual reality mode and works with select iOS and Android devices with 4.5 – 6-inch displays. It features dual adjustable lenses to let you view footage clearly regardless of your prescription.

Bell will be offering its Bell Star and Moto 9 helmets with the 360Fly camera integrated into them creating a sleek design for capturing all your high speed hijinks.

Don’t Fall Flat

Chances are at some point in your adventures either you or someone in your group will end up with a flat tire. If you ride dirt bikes then carrying a spare tube is a smart idea. However, if you’re going to be riding with a mix of dirt bikes and ATVs/UTVs, which run tubeless tires, then Bikemaster’s Tube and Tire Kit ($44.95, part# 315-1507) will be more applicable. Offering a mix of patches for tubes and plugs for tubeless tires the kit comes with everything you need to get a tire

Carry a Spare

A broken drive belt on your ATV or UTV can leave you dead in the water. While drive belts are consumable products that need to be replaced over time, with care and following your owner’s manual on how to properly drive your vehicle, the belt will last much longer. But to ensure you don’t get stranded it’s not a bad idea to carry a spare belt or two—you never know when your belt is going to give. There are plenty of options to choose from such as factory replacement belts from Polaris and Can-Am as well as aftermarket belts from companies like Carlisle.

There are plenty of options to choose from such as factory replacement belts from Polaris and Can-Am as well as aftermarket belts.

Pro Tip: To ensure the new belt lasts as long as possible make sure you remove all the old belt debris from the clutch and ducting area. Even small strands can accelerate degradation of your new belt. Use a mild abrasive like fine sand paper (220-400 grit), Emory Cloth, or steel wool on the clutch sheaves to clean the surfaces and remove residue you can’t see. Break in the new belt by varying your speed and RPM (don’t go past 3/4 throttle). Use smooth and consistent throttle motions (don’t slam on the gas). Stop every few miles or every 15 minutes to allow the belt to cool. Don’t carry heavy loads or put lots of stress on the drivetrain. Follow these guidelines for about 30 miles or at least an hour of driving to help make your new belt last. Find more Offroad Essentials at ChapMoto.com

hey say age is just a number. As we head into the sixth round of the 2016 Supercross season no one is living up to that sentiment more than

Chad Reed. On paper he’s the eldest competitor of the 2016 450 SX class at 33 years old, however, on dirt Reed is racing like his age is right in line with his number plate. While the majority of the class is anywhere from three to 12 years younger, the only place age has played a factor is in experience. This year marks Reed’s 13th season racing Supercross, and as any veteran or even novice racer can tell you, nothing is more valuable than the knowledge gained from experience. It’s all those years of racing and acquired knowledge that probably explains how Reed was able to seal up a factory ride with Yamaha and co-sponsors Monster Energy, Chaparral Motorsports, and Valli Construction only three days before the season opener in Anaheim and still be able to throttle his way to a sixth place finish. Most younger or less experienced riders would have let a last minute major deal signing like that weigh on their mind, thus affecting their performance. Since the weekend opener, Reed has continued to ride smooth and consistently. In week two he hammered through the lineup at the start of the main event to win the SupercrossLive.com Holeshot Award; and after slipping to fourth place, he battled his way back to finish in the number two spot just seconds behind race winner Ryan Dungey. Week three was another excellent showing and another second place finish behind Dungey. As it stands now, we are heading into the sixth race of the season and Reed isn’t showing any signs of fatigue, only straight determination. Having not finished outside of 6th place so far, Reed is sitting in 5th place with 103 points, tied with Eli Tomac. In regards to his Factory Yamaha YZ450F ride, this is a homecoming for Reed. After winning two national Supercross titles in his home country of Australia, Reed began racing full time in the U.S. on factory Yamahas in 2002. That partnership proved to be extremely successful with Reed winning an East Coast Lites Championship, and two Supercross Championships. Just like Yamaha and Reed, Yamaha and Chaparral have had a very fruitful connection as well. Back in the late ’90s/2000, Chaparral campaigned the Supercross series as a privateer Yamaha team with Jeremy

MG: The whole bike (chassis) comes completely apart for inspection and is reassembled from the ground up. TWM: When building this race bike, where were you able to achieve the biggest weight savings? MG: Our biggest weight savings come from some key Factory parts and with extensive use of titanium hardware. TWM: Barring a major incident, do you use the same frame throughout the entire season? If not, how many frames do you typically go through? MG: For a 17 round Supercross series, we use the same frame

Kewl Dude While the Colorado River is very refreshing and does offer a great respite from the blistering sun, you probably won’t want to spend all your time in the water, so throw on this vest from Hyperkewl. This Deluxe Sport Cooling Vest ($55.95, part# 2830-0120) is a great way to beat the heat when worn under your motorcycle jacket or just by itself. If you’ve ever soaked your t-shirt in water before a motorcycle ride then you know how refreshing it can be to feel the warm wind cooled by the wet shirt. Well, this vest serves the same purpose however rather than drying out quickly like a t-shirt can, this motorcycle vest can maintain the cooling effects for five to ten hours. Made with a quilted exterior and a Hypercooling liner, this vest is lightweight, and will stay put at just about any speed with the heavy-duty zipper running up the center.

At your Fingertips There are a myriad of devices that you can mount to the front of your bike to help entertain and inform you. It used to be you had to MacGyver some kind of crude device to secure your cell phone, MP3 player, or a GPS device to your motorcycle handlebars. These days the task is way simpler thanks to the motorcycle accessories from Ram Mounts. No matter how, where, or what you want to securely fasten to your motorcycle, Ram Mounts has a solution. One mount that is particularly useful and popular is Ram Mounts’ Finger Grip Holder with Brake/Clutch Reservoir Mount ($55.37, part# 321-9000). As the name implies, this device can be secured to either your clutch or brake mount clamp; or it can be attached to any piece of round tubing or handlebar ranging in size from 1/2-inch to 1-1/4-inches in diameter. With its adjustable arms and multi-sized, flexible, retention fingertips, this mount can hold pretty much any device you throw at it. Other key benefits include a stable baseplate that can be rotated horizontally, vertically, or anywhere in between and a double socket arm which allows you to quickly and easily adjust the top and lower sections independently to nearly any angle. Add in the fact that it’s made from highly-durable, high-strength composite and marine grade aluminum you can bet this mount will last on the open road as long as you will.

Buyer’s Guide

A Home For Your Dome One of the reasons many California and Nevada residents like the River Run is because all they have to do is take a short putt across the Laughlin Bridge at the north end of town and once they hit the Arizona state line in Bull Head City (as long as they are over 18 years of age) they can peel their motorcycle helmet off and “ride free”. If riding a motorcycle without a helmet is appealing to you then something like the Skid Lid Original Helmet ($49.95, part# 364-6604) is a must for your Laughlin trip. Highly compact, lightweight, superthin, and meets DOT standards, the Skid Lid half helmet is easy to strap to your sissybar or stuff in a saddlebag when cruising the Copper State.

Excess Baggage Traveling across the desert on your motorcycle can zap your energy, and hauling all your luggage and gear from the parking lot to your room can be a real pain. The best solution is to pickup a Sissybar bag that is also a roller bag, something like the SDP2600 Roller Sissy Bar Bag ($178.00, part# 356-35150079) from Saddlemen. The ability to simply pull out the sliding handle and wheel your clothes, helmet, and whatever other gear you brought, rather than trying to carry it all, will be a huge relief when you make the trek from your motorcycle across the casino floor to your hotel room. The SDP2600 features an adjustable sissybar mounting system that will securely attach the bag to your bike and then you can quickly and easily remove/reinstall the bag without having to adjust it again. The bag provides 2,600 cubic inches of storage (more than enough

Tech Tips/How To

MOTORCYCLE THEFT PREVENTION

PROTECTING YOUR PRIZED POSSESSION

A

ccording to a report released by the National Insurance Crime Bureau back in October 2015, the good news is that motorcycle thefts have decreased by 6% in 2014 compared to 2013 even though overall motorcycle sales increased by 4%. Even better news is that from 2011-2014 motorcycle thefts decreased by 8%. So while more

motorcycles are being sold, less have been getting stolen. The bad news is, criminals would still rather waste their time and energy trying to steal your motorcycle rather than legally purchase one like everyone else.

Here are a few other facts gleaned from that report: • 42,856 motorcycles were stolen in the U.S. in 2014. On the positive side, from 01/01/2014 through 06/30/2015, 17,757 or 41% of the 42,856 bikes were recovered. • Motorcycles are more likely to be stolen in warmer months. In August 2014 12% (4,965 motorcycles) were stolen and in July 2014 11% (4,850 bike) were stolen. • California, Florida, Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina, New York, Indiana, Nevada, Georgia, and Maryland ranked 1-10 respectively with the most motorcycle thefts by state in 2014. These 10 states accounted for 58% of total thefts in the US. • In 2014 California had the most recoveries statewide (2,764). Nevada had the highest rate of recovery (40%) for the top 10 theft states. •

Las Vegas, NV, New York, NY, San Diego, CA, Miami, FL, San Francisco, CA, San Antonio, TX, Houston, TX, Indianapolis, IN, Los Angeles, CA, Albuquerque, NM, Austin, TX, Columbia, SC, Phoenix, AZ, Philadelphia, PA, and Orlando, FL ranked 1-15 respectively as the cities with the most motorcycle thefts in 2014. These cities accounted for 7,523 of the 42,856 motorcycles stolen.

There’s no absolute way to keep your motorcycle (or pretty much any vehicle for that matter) from getting stolen, but if you take a few precautions you can help reduce the chances of your motorcycle being a target for theft.

30

1

Lock your ignition and forks. Additionally, use a cable lock or disc lock to secure your bike or lock it to an immovable object.

2

Whenever possible park your motorcycle in a locked garage—out of sight out of mind. If you can, block your bike in with another vehicle to make it harder for thieves to get the bike out.

3

When parking on the street, park in a well-lit area with high foot traffic. If possible, avoid parking between vehicles or near/against hedges that can provide cover for thieves.

4

When staying at a hotel/motel try to get a room on the ground floor and park right in front of your room (we’ve even heard of people sneaking their bike into their room—once the bike has cooled down of course). If you’re staying at a large complex, ask if you can park in front of the hotel entrance in view of the night clerk (a visit from Mr. Andrew Jackson or even a pizza might help convince a lonely night clerk to pay extra special attention to your pride and joy).

5

If you have to park in a parking structure try to park in view of a security camera.

6

If you park your motorcycle outside your house install a motion light to help deter thieves. Cover your motorcycle with a non descript (no branding, no bright colors) motorcycle cover.

7

When locking your bike up, lock it to something heavy, difficult to move, or something that can’t be taken apart: e.g. a cement filled pole, heavy steel, or another motorcycle.

8

If you’re really paranoid you might even consider installing a hidden kill switch or create some kind manual manipulation that makes your bike inoperable to an unsuspecting thief e.g. remove the main fuse.

Touted in press releases and marketing materials as “the world’s only pure sport Side-by-Side/UTV,” the vehicle immediately had lofty expectations to meet. While it’s not required equipment with the turbo, the decision was made to install Yamaha’s optional Rekluse Clutch kit to make handling low speed technical terrain easier. The EXP clutch uses the principles of centrifugal force to automatically engage and disengage the clutch based on RPM and allows you to come to a complete stop in gear or roll extremely slow without having to manipulate the clutch pedal—and you won’t stall it. After upgrading the drivetrain, the ChapMoto UTV Mod team began working on the exterior of the car. The stock cage was pulled off and in its place an AnnLynn Manx Radius Cage and accompanying roof were bolted in place. Compared to the boxy/angular look of the stock cage, the curved design of the Manx cage puts a radically different spin on the YXZ. With more of a stunt car look, the UTV now looks like it could take a tumble and pop right back on to its wheels. Of course better lighting is a key aspect of offroading so a 50-inch curved LED lightbar was bolted to the integrated mounts at the top of the cage. Not So Itsy Bitsy Spyder Where the Harley Tri Glide and Freewheeler follow the classic cruiser styling and the more traditional single front, dual rear wheel setup, the Can-Am Spyder takes a more modern approach to three wheeling with its aggressive body work and a reverse trike or tadpole (two front, single rear) wheel configuration. The flat profile of the rear tire looks like it’s straight off an automobile, however, it’s actually a 225mm wide motorcycle tire specially made by Kenda. With a host of models to choose from, Can-Am offers the widest selection of three wheelers ranging from the sporty to the more tamed tourer. In fact, with a ton of options you can specifically dial in a trike to meet your wants and needs. Powerplants for the Spyders range from the 998cc Rotax V-twin powering the Spyder ST-S, to the three-cylinder 1330cc Rotax Ace engine in the Spyder RT-S Special Series. Choosing a Spyder model can be difficult, but if it were up to us the F3-S Special Series would be at the top of our list. The F3-S Special Series is one stealthy machine with its triple black appearance accentuated by 6-spoke, black chrome wheels, black suede perforated seat, all black body work and blacked-out drivetrain. This menacing machine is more than just looks, however, it sports the peppy 1330cc liquid-cooled Rotax Ace engine which puts out 115hp and 96ft-lbs of torque and delivers a range of about 250 miles from the 7.1 gallon fuel tank.

The frame of the Bionic Pro is comprised of advanced high performance fiberglass polymer resin making it 20 percent lighter than the previous version yet durable and capable of withstanding hard impacts. The front opening/rear entry design allows for natural movement when putting the brace on and the heavy-duty magnet ensures easy and secure closure. A three-piece design, the rear stabilizer is keyed into the neck brace and can be removed with a twist. A quick release pull tab under the chin releases the magnet and opening the two halves to their furthest point enables emergency personnel to separate the two halves at the keyed rear center point for harmless removal. Adjustments can be made via the included replacement pads (5mm/10mm) at the shoulders, stabilizer, and chest as well as the replacement clips that bolt in place in the sides of the neck frame to change the sizing from extra-small to medium and large to extra-large.

While all three neck braces are rather light, the Air Covert is the lightest of all three. Some may prefer this brace over the other two simply based on the fact that the center hole is large enough to slip your head through without having to open the brace. The unique split level frame design with the rear elastic band allows the sides to articulate and move independently and flow with body movements through turns. The chest and back braces are short and wide to provide better support and impact absorption across the body. A push button emergency release enables the front of the brace to separate for removal. The front chest brace acts as a damper providing 30mm of flex. Adjustments can be made at the rear via the rear support with six different positions in the mounts.

The GPX 5.5 offers the most options with four color ways to choose from and a wide range of adjustability. The chassis is made of fiberglass reinforced polyamide and features a side entry design. Some may find the side entry a little tedious the first few times, but a redesigned single button clasp system on the right side makes it easy to get used to. A single quarter-turn screw on the left side makes for easy two piece disassembly in an emergency. The brace features Leatt’s Alternate Load Path Technology (ALPT) which helps disperse energy of a crash throughout the collarbone, shoulders, and back. The front chest plate and rear thoracic strut can be moved forward or backward and removable pads at both locations allow for a tailored fit. In addition, the angle of the thoracic strut can be changed (0-, 5-, 10-, and 15- degrees) via the included rubber caps.

STREET LEGAL

T

he adventure touring motorcycle segment has had its hand on the throttle wide open as of late with more and more people realizing the fun they can have by splitting their time between on and off-road riding. While bikes like the KTM 1190 Adventure, Yamaha Super Tenere, and Suzuki V-Strom 1000 are pretty awesome, they are also quite a bit heavier and bulkier than a dirt bike. Sure you may not want to take a 600 mile on/-off-road trip on your YZ 250, but wouldn’t it be great to make it street legal so you could bop around town, or skip the fuss of loading your bike into the back of the truck and instead just hop on and cruise down the road to the local track or your favorite trail?

motorcycle can essentially legally be ridden off road (it just might not be practical), going the other way can be a lot more difficult.

There are plenty of thrill seekers who have taken their dirt bike on a long journeys, but for the most part, when it comes to making a dirt bike street legal, most people want to do so so that they can simply cruise around town or poke out onto the highway every once in a while.

The important thing to keep in mind before you start purchasing any parts or doing any sort of modifications to your motorcycle is you need to do some research and find out if your state will allow you to register your dirt bike as a dual sport or street legal bike. The first place you can start looking for this information is on your state’s motor vehicle website. Another place that may provide the information is your state’s parks and recreation page or off-highway motor vehicle recreation page (here’s a tip: look for websites with .gov in the web address).

Physically turning your dirt bike into a street legal machine isn’t that difficult, it often only requires a few bolt-on parts and accessories. It’s actually getting the paper work or the go ahead from your local motor vehicle office that can be a challenge, if not impossible. While any street oriented 48

Every state has its own laws and regulations when it comes to registering a dirt bike as a dual sport or street-legal motorcycle. Some states only require you to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) in regards to items such as lighting equipment (turn signals, brake lights, reflectors, head light with high/low beam), speedometer, rear view mirror, rims, tires, exhaust. Some states and even local governments may require additional equipment or even testing/inspection in order to register your dirt bike as a street legal vehicle.

If you do find that your state allows for conversion to street or dual use, its best to print out all the information and create a list of the required components. Then just for good measure, place a call to the motor vehicle department and confirm your findings. If the person on the phone tells you something other than what you have found, provide them with the detailed information you have collected and tell them where on their website you found it—this can also be an indicator as to how easy or hard the process of plating your motorcycle will be.

before getting too deep into the project. Colorado is one state that will allow you to plate a dirt bike and the process involves you completing several forms that must be filled out/signed. The first is a State of Colorado Certificate of Equipment Compliance for Motorcycles which includes a checklist of equipment that must be installed to be considered road worthy. This form and accompanying checklist must also be signed off by a Certified VIN Inspector. You’ll also need a completed Colorado Certified VIN Inspection form. You must also provide some proof of ownership such as: Manufacturers Statement of Origin (MSO), notarized Bill of Sale, or a Dealer’s Invoice. Whichever of these forms you use must show the vehicle for off road use. Once you have all these forms filled out/signed then you can go to a Colorado motor vehicle office and provide them with all your paperwork as well as proof of insurance.

California on-highway emission standards.

Power Up You’re going to need a way to light your path when riding at night so you can see and so others can see you, so your going to need a headlight. Chances are however, you dirt bike didn’t come with a headlight and probably doesn’t put out enough juice to power one. Depending on the year, make, and model of your bike you may need to upgrade your stator to help power a headlight and other essential lighting components. Outfitted with more copper wire wound around its poles to help produce a stronger electrical current, a new stator can produce enough juice to power your headlight, turn signals, brake lights, and tail lights. Baja Designs offers replacement Internal Stators ($84.95, part# 305-9122) that can produce more wattage to power lighting components. Their replacement stator has been pre-wound with a 110w lighting coil, offering plenty of juice to light your ride. In some cases you can even send in your stock stator to Baja Designs and they can do a rewind for you.

Headlight When it comes to a headlight you can choose from traditional halogen style, LED, or HID. LED and HID require less power/draw less power on your electrical system. LEDs and HIDs are often brighter and LEDs are praised for their longevity and durability against vibration. Whatever you choose for a motorcycle headlight it will need to be D.O.T legal (look for the marking on the headlight). Horn Installing a horn onto a dirt bike isn’t a big deal, however, just like with a headlight, you’re going to need enough juice to power the horn. So if you get your stator re-wound or upgrade your stator you should be able

Turn Signals Most states require you to have turn signals at the front and rear of your bike. There are also rules as to where the turn signals need to be mounted in regards to how high off the ground and how far apart the need to be, so be sure to find out what your state specifies. Some states may require that you can only have red turn signals at the rear. You may also have to have some kind of self canceling feature that will automatically turn the signal off once the turn has been made. There are plenty of options to choose from when shopping for turn signals, but once again LED signals are a smart choice because they draw little power, are very durable, and are available in compact

to provide power for the horn as well. Another option would be to install a small motorcycle battery; however, you would have to maintain/keep the battery properly charged. You don’t need a whole lot of room to install a horn either, especially if you use something like the PIAA Slim Line Sports Horn ($64.50, part# 320-0251), it’s compact and produces 112DB/500Hz sound, plenty loud for most people. If you’re thinking you can just get away with mounting one of those squeeze horns onto your handlebars like you had on your bicycle when you were a kid, it’s not gonna fly. You need to be aware of the sound requirements (i.e. horn must be audible from at least 200ft away). If your state requires a horn they should call out the sound requirements as well.

sizes. The Sicass Racing Universal L.E.D. Turn Signal Kit ($209.95, part# SAR-21-173L) comes with two front and two rear turn signals, the flasher and toggle switch and can be installed on most bikes.

Taillights Taillights or running lights, as some people call them, are lights mounted at the rear of the bike that will stay

Mirror If your state requires a motorcycle mirror you’ll most likely only have to run just one, usually on the left side, providing a view of at least 200 feet to the rear. The Acerbis Rear View Mirror ($19.95, part# 257-0541-05) is a quick and easy install and can be maneuvered to nearly any position to give you better line of sight. Available in either a left or right side version, the two best features about this mirror are that it is extremely lightweight and can be folded nearly flat so it’s out of your way when engaging in hardcore off-road riding.

lit as your bike is running. They allow those behind you to see you at night. Most states only require a single motorcycle taillight.

Brake Lights Again most states only require a single motorcycle brake light and many taillights offer brake light illumination as well. If you don’t purchase a dual sport kit or choose to piece your lighting components together, you’ll probably have to pick up a brake light switch which has a threaded banjo bolt that mounts in your caliper and then has a wire lead coming off the other end that ties into your brake light wiring. When hydraulic pressure is applied through the banjo bolt it triggers the brake light to come on.

DOT Tires DOT tires are a must in most states. The great thing is that there are a lot of DOT approved tires that also work great for off road use such as the Dunlop 606 and Pirelli MT21. You can quickly tell if a tire is DOT approved by checking the sidewall for the letters DOT. Many dirt bike tire manufacturers offer tires that are specifically meant for double duty between off road and street use and the tires are typically broken down by percentage of use such as 70/30, 90/10, or 50/50 (off road/on road and vice-a-versa). For example, the Dunlop D606 tires are DOT approved tires designed for 90 percent off road use and 10 percent

irt bike riders put their bodies through a lot of abuse. Acting like the body’s shock absorbers, taking in repetitive impacts from jumps and whoops, and the occasional twist and unintended movement in crashes, the knees take the brunt of the force and are often the body parts that experience recurring injuries. While surgeries can help repair major trauma like MCL and ACL injuries, without protection the knees can still be susceptible to additional damage. For those that have experienced knee injuries, no matter how minor or severe, getting back on the bike can be a difficult and painful endeavor. Thankfully, through modern science and sports medicine companies have addressed these issues with supportive braces and devices to help keep enthusiasts riding longer in more comfort and safety. After a few years of test runs with professional riders Josh Grant and Ryan Villopoto, the Mobius X8 Knee Brace ($599.95, part# 3008-1010104) was finally released to the public last year. The key component to the brace is its custom continuous cable routing system (CCRS) that helps secure the brace to the knee, which Mobius has patented. Additionally, the brace’s tendon back plate gives full support to the knee, protecting the four main ligaments in the knee from a severe leg twist or harsh impact. Its futuristic look, fit, and movement are all designed to prevent lateral bending, lateral rotation, and hyperextension, which are the three main types of knee injuries common in motocross. Named after the famous one sided loop, the Mobius strip, this knee brace utilizes a similar structure. The X8 uses a hard nylon shell along with its CCRS in a figureeight construction to loop around the rider’s knee joint. The shell constricts upon impact to keep the knee in place and avoid undesired movement. Essentially, each time a motocross racer experiences a severe impact to the knee area, the X8 will tighten through its CCRS and grip the rider’s tibia and femur bones in the shin and thigh to control and safeguard the knee and lower leg. In addition to ligament protection, the front of the brace is like a knight’s armor, offering full patella protection from impact.

Tested by top professional riders like Ryan Villopoto and Josh Grant the Mobius X8 is like a fortress for rider’s, providing ultimate protection from impacts, twisting, and unintended movement. and impact absorbing, rubber internal padding for comfortability and easy maintenance. Slipping the X8 brace into position is rather easy as you simply unlock the adjustment dial to loosen the tendon back plate, undo the three Velcro straps, and then slide your leg into the brace. Once the brace is properly aligned on the leg you then tighten the #1 Velcro strap, tighten the tendon back plate via the dial, then secure the #3 and #4 Velcro straps. With its slim profile the X8 easily fits under riding pants and offers a comfortable ride without interfering with the bike or the rider’s movements. The Mobius X8 Knee Brace is sold in pairs and available in three sizes that run according to thigh circumference: small: 17 to 19 inches, medium: 19 to 21 inches, large: 21 to 23 inches. There are also two color options to choose from: White/ Acid Yellow and Storm Gray/Crimson.

The frame of the knee brace is comprised of an injection-molded, nylon shell that is designed to be flexible and rigid to provide maximum comfort and offer 360 degrees of protection that will not rotate or slip once fitted in place. The brace also features CNC forged 6061-T6 anodized aluminum hinge plates, zero degree stops in the patella area, and locking front cable dial. The inside of the brace is lined with plush, molded, closed-cell EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) foam, Visit ChapMoto.com for more Mobius products

Mike in the pits back in 2009 when he was the mechanic for 250 motocross rider Ben Evans (#350).

TWM: You went to one of the motorcycle schools correct? MM: Yes, when I realized I couldn’t make it as a pro rider I decided I wanted to be the guy behind the bike. So after college I went to Motorcycle Mechanics Institute (MMI), in Phoenix, AZ. I started in early 2007 and graduated in late 2008. I specialized in Kawasaki and Yamaha. The school prepares you for working in a dealership service department, but I wanted to get into the racing side of things so I took the Team Green Clinic within the Kawasaki program, which is a three week course that focuses on the competition aspect. It’s a more technical clinic than the other classes and teaches you about tighter torque readings, tighter clearances, and specifics associated with competition performance. TWM: So you have a full time job, but also work as a mechanic, how does that work? What’s a typical week like? MM: I work four 10s Monday through Thursday at Chaparral Motorsports as a Technical Advisor/ Communications Specialist. If the race destination is pretty far I’ll fly out Thursday night. If it’s close I’ll just drive to the track. Friday morning we have breakfast and then go to the track. We do the finishing touches or whatever we need to do on the race bike: whether it be adding new graphics or installing new tires, things like that. We have to go through tech inspection, the helmet and gear get checked out, then we have to go through sound check to make sure the bikes aren’t too loud. Saturday morning we do another once over with the bike to make sure everything is where it needs to be.

At 11:00 am we all get to walk on the track and inspect the obstacles that the riders will be going up against for the first time. As a mechanic, when walking the track we’re looking at things like how big the whoops are, how is the terrain, is it hard, muddy? These things will help us determine how to setup the suspension, fuel mapping, and what tires we should use. Then there’s the rider’s meeting where the organizer will lay out how the event will go. They’ll discuss how the opening ceremonies will go, and maybe talk about events from the previous race. Then we break for about a half hour and everyone gets ready for the first practice session. TWM: So after that first practice what happens? MM: The rider gets 10 minutes of free riding that’s not timed and during that I’ll watch what’s going on with the bike and then I’ll discuss with Adam what I saw and he’ll give me feedback. Then after each subsequent practice/qualifying race the track will get faster and faster so we’ll continue to fine tune the bike to help him get into the top 40 for the night show. Then, hopefully, everything will go good and we’ll be in the show’s main event. TWM: What’s the most common task you have to perform at a race? MM: Basically from the time I get up in the morning on Saturday I’m going non-stop. We have a lot of sponsors and keeping the graphics clean is a big priority. They want their logos to be seen, so I pretty much have to wash the bike every time he comes off the track. He’s a billboard and the sponsors want their graphics to be seen in case he’s on TV. But I also have to maintain the bike to make sure nothing is getting loose and stay on top of the fuel, oil, and tire pressure. While it’s a lot to

do, Saturday is actually the easy day compared to the week leading up to the race. TWM: After each practice or qualifying race do you have a routine? MM: Yeah once the bike has cooled down I check all the fluids to make sure they are topped off. I check and clean the brakes, adjust the chain if needed, refuel the bike, make sure the suspension settings didn’t move or anything. I make sure the spokes haven’t come loose and go through every T-handle I have starting with the 8mm and check every nut and bolt all the way up to 14mm to make sure everything is tight and isn’t going to come loose. I’ll clean his goggles, his boots and helmet. One of the last things I check before he goes back out on the track is to make sure the tire pressure is right. Meanwhile, Adam is resting, going over video with the trainer, and studying what he can change or do better in the next session or heat. TWM: Worst case scenario, what’s the most difficult thing you might have to do? MM: Worst case scenario would be he blows an engine. We have his practice bike as a backup. So I’d have to take the engine out of that bike and swap it over to his race bike so he can continue racing. I try to have that engine ready, in case that happens. The bigger factory teams on the other hand might have five engines standing by and they’ve got communications going from the track to the pits in case something happens so that by the time they get the bike back to the pits they can have the swap done in like 10-15 minutes where it takes me like 30-35 minutes to swap engines. If he crashes and breaks anything on the bike 56

then I really got to hustle to install the new stuff. We have some new parts ready to go, but if he breaks something out of the ordinary I’ve got to take it off the practice bike and swap it over to the race bike. So that’s when my day really gets rough, if he crashes and things break. Then I’ve got to do all my other normal tasks on top of repairing the bike. TWM: What’s the least fun about being a race mechanic? MM: At the beginning the traveling is fun. You get to go to all these different cities. It’d probably be easier to count on one hand the places I haven’t been to. But once you do it for a few years it kind of starts getting old, you’re living out of a suitcase, eating fast food every day and you just want a home-cooked meal. Life on the road can get a little old, especially when you have a wife and kids. You’re never home and your family can only see you on TV or via a web cam. So the travel and being away from your family can be the hardest part. TWM: What’s the most fun part about it? MM: Everyone is one big family. We’re all friends during the week then it gets serious on Saturday. You see the same people and go to the same restaurants every year. You see the same crowd so you start to make different friends in each city. Race time is really fun. The roar of the crowd is really exciting. When the night show starts we’re in the tunnel waiting to come out and they’re doing opening ceremonies, the lasers, the fireworks, the glitz, the glamour, hearing that crowd it just echoes in that tunnel and gets everyone amped and ready to rock. Everyone is there to see the best Supercross riders in the world do battle, and to be a part of that is pretty exciting.

SENA

10C BLUETOOTH CAMERA AND COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

S

ports Action cameras are great for reliving or sharing your experiences with friends and family. The one downfall with these video recording devices is that they are limited in their capabilities. Sena is well known in the motorcycle industry for producing excellent Bluetooth communication devices that enable rider and passenger or a group of riders, to talk amongst each other via intercom while cruising down the road. After introducing its Prism Cam, a handlebar mountable or helmet mountable camera that linked up with Sena’s communication devices to record audio and video, Sena decided to combine the two units and came up with the Sena 10C ($348.95, part# 690-10C-01). With the introduction of the 10C users now have the ability to record high-def video, snap hi-res still shots, stream music, listen to FM radio, make and receive calls from your smart phone, receive voice prompts from your GPS devices, or use the intercom to communicate with up to four other users. Basically, with all its functions you are no longer restricted to a few basic operations, the Sena 10C opens you up to a whole new world and can turn your motorcycle into a multi-channel rolling entertainment center. Most amazingly, with all of its capabilities, you’d think the 10C would be an awkward and heavy device. However, the opposite is true. Extremely compact and lightweight, the water resistant housing mount to the side of your helmet as other Sena Bluetooth devices do and once installed you’ll barely notice it’s there—the unit only weighs 3.32 ounces. The camera has a 125 degree

field of view and records video in 1080p:30fps, 720p:30fps, or 720p:60 fps. You can snap 3.5MP photos in either standard, burst (5 pics) or time lapse (1 shot every 10 seconds). The camera accepts MicroSD memory cards up to 32 GB which gives you about 2 hours of recording time. With a dedicated camera button the 10C also offers video tagging which when activated will record a 3 minute clip (1 min before the tag and 2 additional minutes after the tag), this will save you editing time by recording only the important parts rather than recording a 2 hour video and then trying to find the exciting parts. The cool thing about the Sena 10C is that it allows you to easily record dynamic videos that integrate music and voice over/narration. Again, this not only makes for easier video editing and sharing, but also more engaging content.

quickly. Connecting the comms system to your smart phone enables you to perform hands-free calling so you can stay focused on the road. The device provides up to 17 hours of talk time and fully charges in about 3.5 hours. While there’s no screen on with the 10C (it does provide audible beeps and voice prompts for status changes) by downloading the Sena Headset app you can see exactly what’s going on and easily configure the settings and access the Quick Guide. The Sena 10C comes with everything you need to install, charge, and use the device and is fully compatible with iOS and Android devices.

Beyond its video capabilities the Sena 10C enables you to communicate with up to four other people via intercom. The intercom is universal and works with other Bluetooth headset systems and offers up to a 1 mile range. The FM tuner has ten presets so you can find your favorite stations

Buyer’s Guide

FOR

THE

OF THE ROMANCING ON TWO WHEELS With Valentine’s Day having just passed it got us thinking about dating and the anxiety and worry that is often associated with planning the perfect date. Typically your mind begins to swirl and your gut is filled with mixed emotions as you contemplate things like the perfect gift, dinner reservations, weekend getaway locations, and funding the whole deal. Activities like dinner at a nice restaurant, a night out at the movies, or grabbing an afternoon coffee are great, but are also pretty stereotypical and boring. If you’re trying to come up with a way to make a unique first impression or want a good surprise for that special someone we suggest a motorcycle ride.

A motorcycle ride is easy, inexpensive, doesn’t involve a lot of planning, and can be very romantic. What could be better than your passenger snuggling up against you with their arms wrapped tightly around your waist as you motor down the road, right? You could even make an entire weekend trip out of it or just a spontaneous “let’s see where the road takes us” type of thing. Before you head out for a romantic road trip here’s couple things we suggest you consider bringing along.

Idle Chit Chat Just because you’re on a motorcycle ride doesn’t mean you can’t communicate with one another. If you don’t have one already, a motorcycle intercom system can be a very handy device not only for a romantic motorcycle ride, but for any time you are riding with your friends or in a group. Sena’s SMH10 Bluetooth Communication System with Universal Microphone Dual Pack ($399.00, part# 690-SMH10D-11) comes with everything you need to set up two motorcycle helmets so that you and your passenger or anyone within nearly 1,000 yards can communicate. The dual pack can be setup to work on full face motorcycle helmets, modular helmets, and open face motorcycle helmets. Bluetooth connectivity allows you to sync up with your phone to make/receive calls, listen to playlists 58

on your phone, and get GPS directions. The Sena Dual Pack provides up to 12 hours of talk time and 10 days of standby time. So if your passenger turns out to be a jabber-jaw you’ll have plenty of juice to get you through the trip

Baggage is a Good Thing

No matter where you’re taking your date, chances are you’re going to want stop somewhere to take in the sights and sounds. And when you do stop, what better way to surprise your date than pulling out an impromptu romantic snack and a bubbly beverage like some strawberries and sparkling cider. The question is, how are you going to conceal the secret surprises? Simple, a backpack like American Kargo’s Trooper Backpack ($180.00 part# 254-3517-0329) has plenty of storage to carry all your food and beverage needs in its large main compartment. Plus it has a ton of individual zippered pockets for carrying items like extra clothing

(in case it gets cold or things start to heat up), a laptop, sunglasses, or small speakers to set the mood with some music. You could even make a game out of all the pockets by hiding a few extra surprises throughout the backpack and making your date have to find them. The nice thing about this backpack is that it functions as a hydration system as well if you install the one of American Kargo’s bladder systems. The unique butterfly chest harness offers stability and comfort through its multiple adjustment points and padded straps, making it a great fit for any size rider, men and women.

Downsizing If you think a backpack is overkill, or your date refuses to wear the backpack as you ride, then a tank bag like Nelson Rigg’s CL-2015 Journey Tank Bag might be a better option. The Journey Tank Bag is a great choice for both street bike and cruisers riders as its available in either a magnetic mount ($119.95, part# 204-CL-2015-MG) or strap mount ($109.95, part# 204-CL-2015-ST) version. While the bag looks compact when it’s zipped down, when fully expanded it offers a great amount of storage— more than 18 liters—providing plenty of room for a roadside treat. With multiple compartments you can easily pack the few essential items you’ll need to take along on the perfect date. The top of the bag features a large, transparent map pocket which is also touch screen device friendly. Off the bike you can use the adjustable shoulder/ tether strap to convert the bag into a backpack.

It’s Okay to have a Sissy Going on a first date or blind date on a motorcycle can be an awesome way to create a lasting impression, however, there’s a high possibility that your date has never been on a motorcycle or won’t be accustomed to motorcycling and therefore might be a little hesitant to get on board without some kind of back support. Heck even some passengers that have been riding on the back of a motorcycle for years may still refuse to throw a leg over a bike unless it has a sissy bar. A motorcycle sissy bar can mean

the difference between a fun time and a traumatizing experience. Cobra’s Standard Sissy Bar ($264.95 - $309.95, part# 219-02-5105) is high enough that it can provide reassuring support as well as be the crux your passenger needs to stay relaxed on a motorcycle ride. The sissy bar is available for a wide range of cruiser motorcycles and comes with chrome mounting plates, a cushy pad, and a 17-inch tall rectangular steel sissy bar.

Buyer’s Guide Peg it If your cruiser motorcycle didn’t come with passenger pegs or you took them off because they didn’t go with the customized look of your bike, be aware that you’re going to have to install some. Your passenger is going to need somewhere to put their feet and all states require that a motorcycle have pegs or floorboards for the passenger to rest their feet on. So that means you better have some sport bike footpegs or cruiser pegs or floorboards on hand. Pretty much every motorcycle sold these days is outfitted to carry a passenger, so motorcycle foot rests are pretty easy to install. But if you’re planning on taking a long trip then maybe you want to give your passenger some additional footing options. Kuryakyn’s Passenger ISO-Boards and Mount Kit for Metric Cruisers ($219.99, part# 025-4455) will give your guest a broad platform to rest their feet and offers more room and the ability to set their

feet down flat. Floorboards are often preferred over pegs for long distance rides as they provide more support and reduce stress and fatigue on the legs and feet. The rubber Iso pads on these floorboards will also reduce vibrations thus helping to minimize numbness in the lower extremities.

Air Up One very important thing you’ll want to check before you ride is your motorcycle tires. Inspect them for cracking, punctures, and foreign objects. Be sure to check that they are properly inflated for two up riding. Bikemaster’s Digital Tire Gauge ($17.95, part# 315-1502) is compact, easy to store and simple to use. Proper motorcycle tire inflation is especially important if you are planning a weekend getaway or lake side camping trip where the motorcycle will be loaded down with a passenger and extra gear.

Sight for sore eyes As a motorcycle enthusiast you are fully aware that it’s not about the destination, it’s about the ride. Your passenger on the other hand may not be so well aware and so it might be a good idea to have a scenic and pleasant route in mind with a romantic destination or rest stop planned out—this is especially true for passengers that are new to motorcycles or haven’t been on the back of one in a while. Some routes/destinations we suggest are gentle mountain passes, scenic back roads, the beach, or a campground nestled along a lake or river. Just remember, if you do head to the mountains or any extremely twisty road for that matter, take it easy and don’t push it like you might if you were by yourself or chasing your favorite riding partner. You don’t want to have to pull over early due to a sick or scared passenger. Also, if you’re heading to the mountains keep in mind it will get a bit cooler as you climb in elevation so you might want to bring along some cold weather motorcycle gear.

The Pressure is On

Keep the Rubber Side Down If you’re on an adventure bike or dual sport and plan on heading off-road on some back roads for a remote picnic make sure you’ve got proper dual sport tires to handle the terrain you’ll be encountering. More than likely you won’t want to get too crazy on your off-roading excursion with a passenger hanging off the back so something like Pirelli’s Scorpion MT90/ AT Dual Sport Tires (90/90/-21 front: $194.95, part# 329-03160004 | 150/70R-18 rear: $222.95, part# 329-03170004) should serve your needs. Designed as a 70-percent on-road/30-percent off-road tire it has rugged tread blocks to help you dig in and maintain traction when on trails or light mud, while the lower profile and compact tread design will run fairly quiet, provide a smooth ride, and deliver good traction and performance in all weather conditions on paved surfaces.

When the temperature dips, extra attention needs to paid to your tires’ pressure. Cold temps cause air pressure to drop, which in turn will make you lose a few PSI on both ends of the bike. General rule of thumb is a 1-2 pound air pressure drop every 10 degrees. Slime Tire Compressor ($36.99, part# 353-018116). If riding with a passenger, adjust the PSI accordingly for the increase in weight. See OEM and tire manufacturer’s recommended PSI.

Communication is Key Lastly, before you roll out on your ride make sure you and your passenger are in sync. This means ensuring both of you are aware of the intricacies involved with two-up riding. Establish some simple hand signals beforehand to indicate gas stops and bathroom breaks. Remember that with the extra weight of a passenger it will take you a bit longer to stop and make passes, so give yourself adequate room for both. Be cautious when making turns as the extra weight will make the bike handle a bit differently and clearances may be affected. Make sure you communicate with your passenger to let them know when you are ready for them to mount/ dismount the bike. The worst thing that could happen is you guys take a spill in the driveway before even clicking into first gear because your passenger caught you off guard by shifting the weight of the bike when getting on. Make sure your passenger understands the effects of leaning and how to properly move with you and the motorcycle. And be cognizant of the fact that riding in windy situations will be exacerbated with an additional body on board. Visit ChapMoto.com for more Great Gear

Off The Line

2016 HONDA AFRICA TWIN

H

onda gave the world of glimpse of what it had in store for the motorcycle world when it had a dust-covered, black and grey camo bike on display at its booth during the 2014 EICMA show. Billed back then as “True Adventure,” details were sparse, but it was evident where Honda had its sights set. It wasn’t until several months later that Big Red would formally introduce the all-new CRF1000L Africa Twin. Not exactly a new comer, the CRF1000L has a strong lineage dating back to HRC’s successful Dakar-Paris race bike in the late ’80’s, the NXR750V, and the company’s early foray into adventure touring with the 1989 XRV750 Africa Twin. Ready to go anywhere, the new Africa Twin is comprised of all the elements and features that define a true adventure motorcycle: good ground clearance, long travel suspension, a rugged and well-balanced chassis, upright riding position, and a potent engine. Where the new machine stands apart from its competition is the fact that along with a full manual six-speed model, Honda will also offer an automatic version featuring the company’s Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). An automatic trans could be a coveted feature amongst hardcore Adventure riders who want to push the bike’s off road capabilities but don’t want to fight or fuss with clutching and throttling over extremely rugged terrain.

62

At the heart of the semi-double cradle steel frame is a compact and lightweight, 998cc, liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, 8-valve parallel twin with a 270° crank and 4-valve Unicam head design. According to Honda the engine draws heavily on the brand’s CRF250R/450R competition machines but offers excellent high-speed highway travel with strong and linear power and torque throughout the rev-range. The mill makes a claimed 93.8 horsepower at 7,500 rpm and 72.3 foot-pounds of torque at 6,000 rpm. Assisting the engine is a constant-mesh 6-speed manual or the 6-speed DCT with on- and off-road riding modes. The DCT is computer controlled, based on four selectable modes (a Drive mode designed for fuel economy and three different levels of Sport mode), there’s also a G mode for smoother shift transitions on gravel roads.

Two Wheel Mania | Issue 4 | March 2016

The Africa Twin is also outfitted with switch operated torque control (traction control) and ABS functions. Traction control offers four settings: Off and 1-3. Level 1 lets you get loose with some moderate sliding and wheel spin whereas level 3 is the most controlled setting of the three. While ABS can be turned off, it can only be done at the rear wheel.

drivetrain helps give the Twin 9.8 inches of ground clearance. The parallel twin, sloped 4.9 gallon gas tank, and dropped seating position allows for a narrow profile and lower center of gravity making for a more centralized mass and easier, smoother maneuverability. The manual version weighs in at 511 pounds while the DCT transmission adds a little more than 20 pounds.

Front suspension is handled by a 45mm Showa cartridge inverted fork offering 9 inches of travel and the rear is supported by a Pro-Link single shock with hydraulic preload and provides 8.7 inches of travel. The suspension is adjustable for spring preload, compression, and rebound damping both front and rear. The bike rolls on a 21 inch front wheel and an 18 inch rear, which when combined with the compact design of the

The Africa Twin Manual transmission version has an MSRP of $12,999 and DCT version is listed at $13,699. Between the price tag, horsepower/torque output, DCT, electronics, and styling, the Africa Twin should stir up a big cloud of dust amongst its competitors as well as the higher end BMW/KTM Adventure bikes.

Ready to go anywhere, the new Africa Twin is comprised of all the elements and features that define a true adventure motorcycle...

Features:

Wind Screen

Seat Position

Wind tunnel testing helped Honda create a wind screen profile that doesn’t overpower the look of the bike yet reduces turbulence and wind noise. A 90 mm taller/ 30 mm wider windscreen will also be available.

The Africa Twin provides a comfortable and manageable seating position for riders of various heights with its adjustable seating position. The seat height can be changed from 34.2 inches to 33.4 inches. The shorter seat height allows for riders less than 6 feet tall to comfortably balance the bike flat-footed.

Shifting

Engine

Triggers by the left grip on the DCT version will allow you to override the computer controlled shifting. The DCT offers several modes D, S1, S2, and S3. D is for fuel economy and the S modes get sportier with faster down shifts and hold lower gears longer to run higher in the revs.

The 998cc parallel twin engine is secured to the frame with six engine mounts. Inside, two balancer shafts help reduce engine vibrations while also driving the oil and water pumps housed within the cases. The fuel efficient engine achieves approximately 50 mpg, allowing for more than 200 miles between gas stops.

As the bike of reigning 2015 SX and MX champion, Ryan Dungey, right off the bat you may notice the KTM has two distinct advantages against the Yamaha and Kawasaki: overall weight and peak horsepower. The lightest of the three, the newly redesigned KTM hit the scales nearly 8 pounds lighter than the 2015 version thanks to a new chassis and engine. The refreshed engine was designed to be more compact and more centralized within the frame for better weight balance and improved handling characteristics. A host of components from tire to tire such as a new electronic Launch Control, a lighter 5-Speed transmission, new Flow Design Header (FDH), lighter Chromoly steel frame, new generation WP rear shock, and new airbox and air filter design help the 450-SX deliver a competitive edge over its competition.

For 2016 the YZ450F received several key improvements making it a formidable steed. Chassis changes like moving the triple clamp offset from 22mm to 25mm, 2mm thicker engine mounts and a reshaped swingarm pivot section, and lowering the footpegs by 5mm have all been implemented to improve rigidity and balance while also providing an all-around better handling machine. The engine was massaged a bit as well with new intake and exhaust cam profiles and timing boost combustion efficiency to improve low- to mid-rpm range power delivery. It’s hard to win races if you can’t get a good start, so to help get the bike out front more consistently the YZ features an all-new Launch Control System (LCS) that optimizes power output and provides ideal acceleration out of the gate, especially on hard track surfaces.

Peak Horsepower*: 55.32 @9688 rpm

Just like the KTM, the KX 450F is all new for 2016 and was put on a strict weight loss program shedding more than 7 pounds thanks to a new aluminum perimeter frame and new engine. The chassis’ weight was cut down by a little more than 3 pounds and its spars were narrowed by 6mm resulting in a svelter midsection for a narrower and more controlled feel. The new engine is about 4.4 pounds lighter and more powerful thanks to revised intake valve shapes to increase air volume, a lighter intake camshaft with revised timing for lowmid RPM response, reshaped intake port to improve performance in mid-to-high RPM range, and revised bridged-box bottom piston based on AMA factory race bikes. Adjustability in the Showa SFF TAC fork helps you dial in to your precise riding style along with the ability to move the bar mounts forward or back and the footpegs up or down 5mm.
