With its streamlined fairing, windshield, and front body panels, in relation to the other two bikes, the KLR could really be considered a lightweight ADV bike as opposed to a strip down dual sport. After being neglected for many years, in 2008 Kawasaki redressed the KLR with the fresh bodywork we see now, then the bike received a little more love midway through 2014 with the KLR “New Edition” getting updated suspension (stiffer/better rebound and damping) and a new seat shape. It’s still as durable, nearly indestructible, and easy to fix as ever.

Three key factors separate the KTM 690 from the others in this comparison: lower weight, bigger power, and larger displacement. Leading in all three categories comes with a price however, a nearly $4,000 price. For those serious about their dual sporting and who thoroughly use the machine week in and week out then that price difference is definitely worth the premium components, modern tech (ABS, TBW, switchable maps), excellent on/ off road handling, and the added benefit of smoother highway cruising with an additional gear.

The DR in the DR650 designation has many connotations but it might be best used as an abbreviation for “dozer”, as in bull dozer. Tonka tough, for some 20 years the DR650 has been pushing riders up, over, under, and through harsh obstacles and rough terrain while still offering a smooth commute to and from the office. No nonsense and inexpensive, the DR650 is a great option for street riders looking to get into some dirt action or dirt bikers who want to be able to do more than just trail ride.

THE CLEVER LEVER: ASV LEVERS

F1 Brake Lever

I

f If you’ve been riding motorcycles for any amount of time, chances are your bike has spent some time on its side on the ground. If you have had a spill or two, hopefully it was your ego that took the brunt of the crash. More than likely your bike took on some damage as well, especially in the hand control area, and more specifically the clutch and/or brake lever.

Jutting out off the handlebars like branches on a tree, when the bike meets face to face with the ground or any other immovable object for that matter, either one or both of the levers typically snap off. If you’ve ever taken a close look at a clutch lever, you probably noticed that it has an indented line running from the top to bottom about midway through the length of the lever. This line is designed to be a breaking point so that if your bike does go down in a crash or tip over the lever will only break in half rather than completely snapping off

12

and potentially leaving you stranded with no way to actuate the clutch. On some stock motorcycles you might not find the same line on the brake side because if the brake lever does break off, you can still utilize the foot brake to get to your destination. While the inclusion of a break point on the clutch and brake lever is a smart idea and can come in hand in an emergency, ASV Inventions came up with an even better idea when the company introduced its Unbreakable Levers. Devised with a unique pivot design that allows the lever to rotate forward as it makes contact with the ground or whatever the bike smacks into, instead of breaking the lever it simply moves with the impact and then springs back into position. This creative feature will not only save you frustration and anger after a crash but it will also save you money, as you won’t have to buy a new lever or levers. Actually the pivot design isn’t the only benefit; all the ASV levers also feature an adjustable reach allowing riders to easily adjust the distance from the blade to the handlebar according to their hand size/grip. This makes for a more universal fitment for a wide range of riders. Then, if for some reason things do go wrong, or the levers need some TLC, you can completely rebuild them.

C6 Pro Offroad Lever

F3 Brake Lever

ASV offers its levers for a wide variety of applications ranging from dirt bikes and ATVs, to street bikes, in an assortment of styles; F1, F3, C5, and C6 Series depending on your mode of transportation. One of the best features about ASV levers is that the company has a solid guarantee accompanying its varying levers with the numbers 1, 3, 5, and 6 corresponding to the numbers of years they guarantee against breakage. When it comes to motocross and offroad applications ASV Inventions stands out as a leader with its variety of lever options. If you’re looking for affordability and something really close to your stock levers you’ll want to check out the F1 Series. Forged from 6061 aluminum, and featuring a slimmer blade, this is ASV’s base model and least expensive lever. Comprised of the same highquality components as the rest of the ASV lever line—chrome steel precision sealed bearings, stainless steel pivot and bushing parts, chrome silicon cantilever springs, and aerospace-grade stainless steel—the F1 is designed to get you back in the saddle without busting your wallet. The F3 Series is available in a variety of anodized colors to match your bike and comes with the ASV

logo laser engraved on the blade. The F3 and C6 models are available with the Pro Model clutch lever and Pro Perch that features an on-the-fly cable adjuster so you can quickly and easily adjust the play in your clutch cable as you ride to get better performance out of your machine. In addition, the Pro Perch comes with a nylon Rotator sleeve that mounts between the perch and handlebar to allow the lever assembly to rotate vertically in the event of a crash or collision, providing even less of a chance of possible breakage. If you’re a hard core moto junkie who demands nothing but the best for your machine then the C6 series is an absolute must. The C6 is loaded with features such as on-the-fly reach adjustment on both the clutch and brake lever, a redesigned shape that provides a lighter and more performance oriented feel, and a remarkable no questions asked 6-year guarantee. No matter if it’s two or four wheels, if you are new to riding or tired of staring at your broken clutch or brake lever, ASV lnventions offers a clever line of levers, that could save you time, money, and frustration down the road…or trail.

It’ll be tough to get lost with this Trail Tech Voyager Computer mounted between the handlebars. Also, for those that are serious about their bike’s performance and data logging their trips, the Voyager is a great companion. impacts or protect the levers against drops. So to fix that, the stock guards were replaced with Acerbis Rally Pro X-Strong Handguards. The guards are made of durable injection-molded nylon composite and feature wrap around anodized aluminum frames. The outer ends of the These three gentlemen recently visited Chaparral Motorsports during their trip of the Americas. They were on day 35 of a 60 trek traveling north from South America through Central America, Mexico, the US, Canada, and Alaska all the way to the Arctic Circle and then riding back home. Traveling more than 20,000 miles round trip, all three were riding KLRs. They stopped in at Chaparral to get their bikes serviced, get some fresh tires, and pick up some new riding gear and accessories.

frames get solid-mounted into the end of the handlebar via a steel bar-end insert that won’t allow the guard to rotate in a crash. To go along with the new handguards, the mirrors were replaced with Bikemaster Folding Mirrors. With a long 8” stem the round 4-1/2” mirrors can be adjusted to varying heights to accommodate a wide range of riders and preferences. As a safety and money saving feature, the stems are designed to fold rather than break in the event of a major impact. Engine protection was improved by removing the stock plastic engine guard and installing an aluminum Moose Racing Skid Plate. Made from strong, lightweight, aircraftgrade aluminum, the skid plate has been shaped and welded to perfectly fit the KLR frame. The skid plate has large holes in the top front and sides to allow for plenty of airflow to the engine while the smooth bottom helps slide over logs and rocks without catching. There is also an oil drain hole which makes servicing your bike a breeze. Taller riders or those that like more coverage from their windshield will appreciate the Moose Racing Adventure Windscreen. Measuring in at a little more than 16” tall, the Moose Windscreen is a full 4” taller than stock.

This bike was loaded to the gills with gear, a proven testament to the KLRs pack mule-like capabilities. Some may be impressed to hear that this bike had some 200,000 miles on the odometer, but as any KLR owner will tell you those are just the break-in miles.

The additional height provides better wind protection, less buffeting, and better wet weather protection. The windshield is made from Lucite aircraft quality acrylic, is more durable than stock, and provides a more optically clear/distortion free view.

the Galfer Wave Rotor, well, even more weight was saved by ditching the stock battery and replacing it with a Western Powersports Featherweight Lithium Battery. The new lithium ion battery is several pounds lighter than the stock lead acid battery and significantly smaller. The weight difference may be minimal in the overall weight of the bike but can still help contribute to a slightly more balanced and easier to handle motorcycle. In addition to being smaller/lighter, WPS claims this battery will deliver a faster charger (up to 90% in about 6 minutes), increased cranking amps, and longer shelf life. All these parts and accessories were easy to install, required basic hand tools, and only took a little more than half a day to install. Pretty much anyone with basic mechanical skills and the ability to follow step-by-step instructions could handle a project like this and improve the protection, long-distance comfort, and performance

the kit is the 320mm Wave cut brake rotor. 40mm larger than the stock rotor, the Galfer unit offers the benefit of a floating rotor laser cut from high carbon 420 SS/8 composite. Even though the rotor is noticeably larger it’s significantly lighter than stock. The larger size, material, and floating nature helps with heat dissipation and delivers more powerful and smoother braking. Included with the kit are a relocation bracket, steel-braided brake line, Galfer’s Green Brake pads, and all necessary mounting hardware, making installation quick and straightforward. To match the front brake line a Galfer Stainless Steel Rear Brake Line was installed as well. Knowing that KLR owners are the explorer type, the Chaparral team added a Trail Tech Voyager Computer. Sure the KLR has a speedometer/odometer gauge, but the Voyager offers a wealth of detailed information along with being a very handy GPS device. The Voyager has a 2.7” screen that is compact yet provides a large enough display to quickly glance and see what’s going on—even in direct sunlight. The Voyager GPS can create maps and log the trails/routes you ride and when you are finished you can share them with friends. The computer also logs/monitors engine temperature, ambient temperature, distance, voltage, compass, elevation, and engine RPM so that you

READY FOR BATTLE :

HEAVY-DUTY STREET BIKE PROTECTIVE GEAR

W

e’ve fully entered into the motorcycle riding season and with that comes an army of two-wheeled soldiers ready to battle against cagers for their fair share of paved turf. With the evolution of motorcycle riding gear we have the ability to cover ourselves in protective wear to the point that we look like futuristic bio-

mechanical robots. From under armor to exo-skeleton padding, the choices for street bike protective wear continues to expand, ensuring our legion of high-speed, technical, and stunt riding warriors will be ready for the open road. Listed below are a few of our favorite protective gear items for street bike riders:

To help everyone communicate clearly and effectively while barreling across the dunes and dirt, a PCI Race Radio California Ultimate 4 Package was installed. The California package replaces the 4 headsets with four off-road helmet wiring kits to abide by California’s UTV helmet law. The Bluetooth radio package allows for four-way in-car intercom as well as two-way car-to-car communication. The Bluetooth feature is really cool because it allows the driver to pair their smart phone or Bluetooth music device so that they can stream music for all the passengers to hear. LIFE BEHIND BARS:

HANDLEBARS FOR YOUR CRUISER

T

he stock handlebars on Harley-Davidson and other cruiser type motorcycles serve their function fairly well—to comfortably fit the “average” rider and help them safely and securely operate their motorcycle. The problem is however, not everyone is the “average” rider with average body dimensions. Some people have longer torsos

while others have shorter arms. Some people may not be able leave their arms or hands in the stock riding position for miles on end and may experience dulling pain or numbness after only an hour or two of riding. This leads us to why there are so many aftermarket handlebar options available. Well, that and the fact the majority of stock handlebars are just down right boring looking and do very little for the aesthetics of the motorcycle. Style and comfort are two major reasons why motorcycle owners will change out their handlebars. Heck, depending on how long they own the bike, some salty old road dogs may change out their handlebars two, three, or even four times. Luckily, there are plenty of options to choose from when picking out handlebars and the list below will give you an overview of some of the more popular styles.

BAR SWAP:

HOW TO MEASURE FOR NEW HANDLEBARS

T

here are two key factors you need to consider when swapping out the handlebars on your metric cruiser or Harley-Davidson. First you need to choose a style then you need to figure out the bar dimensions you want/need. Determining the style can be somewhat of a daunting task as there are so many different styles to choose from (Apes, Z-Bars, Drag Bars, etc.). Once you figure out the style of bars you want, you need to check a few measurements (height, width, pullback etc.) to make sure the bars will provide the comfort and riding position you desire. While you may spend hours perusing hundreds of images of different handlebar styles, determining the dimensions you need is pretty simple. All you need is something long and straight like a

36

broomstick, a piece of string with a nut or washer tied to the end of it, a tape measure, someone to take all the measurements, and a pen and paper to mark down all your dimensions. You can take all the measurements with the stock bars on or off the bike.

1

THE TOOLS

Basic “tools” needed to measure for your new handlebars are a tape measure, string with a nut or washer tied to it, broomstick or long handle, pen and paper.

4

BRING A FRIEND

The rise/height can be measured from the center of the handlebar to center of the broomstick. If the broomstick isn’t resting directly above the handlebar it’s often easier to use a straight edge or a long level if you have one, to make a right angle from the handlebar to the string to get the most accurate measurement. This way your buddy can mark where the string and straight edge meet and then measure the distance from the mark on the string up to the broomstick to determine the height. It should be noted that height and end rise won’t always be the same.

2

MEASURE UP

There are three basic measurements you are going to take

Some bars have the grip ends dip down a bit, so the end rise may be lower than the height. Keep this in mind when measuring and shopping for your new bars.

to determine your handlebar dimensions: width, pullback, and rise/height. Starting out sitting on the motorcycle, grasp the broomstick in your hands and stretch your arms out to where you feel you want your handlebar grips to reside. Next have your buddy measure the distance between the outside of your hands (pinky to pinky). This will give you your overall width.

4

RESEARCH TIME

Once you have those basic measurements you can then begin your research to make sure the style of bars you like will work/fit with your ride. For this demonstration

the rider would be looking for a set of bars that are in the neighborhood of 32” wide, with 8” pullback, and about

Knurl Width/Clamp Area:

This is the distance in reference to the knurl marks or where the risers will clamp onto the bar. Knurl marks can be measured center-tocenter, outside-to-outside or the distance between knurl marks.

B Dimpled/Swedged: This means that the underside of the bar ends have been pressed in to create a small indention/channel to allow for the switch wiring to be run externally without the control housings pinching the cables. Some handlebars are dimpled and drilled to give you both options. C Bar Diameter/Thickness: The stock handlebars on most cruisers and Harley-Davidsons are 1” thick across the entire bar (this is the outside diameter), some companies refer to this as “thick”. You may come across bars referred to as “chubby” or “fat”; that means the OD/thickness is larger than stock. Many companies offer handlebars in either 1-1/4” thick or 1-1/2” thick for a beefier and stouter appearance. These larger diameter bars are usually thicker in all areas except the hand control and clamp area. In these areas the bars taper down to 1” to allow for fitment with stock controls and risers. Off The Line

2015 KTM RC 390

There are plenty of positive achievements that KTM is known for, high quality motorcycles, innovative designs, a recent Supercross Championship with Ryan Dungey, and the list goes on. If there’s one thing that you can’t associate with the Austrian brands it’s a lack of diversity. Take a quick peek at its current lineup of off road motorcycles and you’ll notice it has more than 30 bikes to choose from amongst its motocross, enduro, and Freeride categories. Now KTM is expanding its presence in the sport bike market with the introduction of the new RC 390. While KTM offers the RC 125, 200, and 390 in Europe and other international markets, for the US the RC 390 provides yet another option for entry level riders or those looking for a fun and nimble small displacement commuter. Of course for new riders there’s also the RC 390’s brother, the naked 390 Duke, but not everyone is into the street fighter look so the RC will be a welcome addition to those that like the performance and styling associated with a sport bike. At the heart of the RC 390 is a liquid-cooled, four-stroke, 373cc, single cylinder engine that sports twin overhead camshafts, four valves and electronic fuel injection. Pushing out a claimed 44hp, new riders will appreciate the balancer shaft which helps ensure a smooth ride while clicking 44

through the 6-speed transmission. The combination of a tubular steel trellis frame and a alloy swingarm keeps the overall weight light and manageable at 324 pounds (dry weight). Even though it may be touted as an entry-level bike, the RC still carries KTM’s “Ready to Race” mantra as the bike has been set up with a shorter trail and wheelbase resulting in better ground clearance and responsive handling. Suspension on the RC 390 is taken care of by a 43mm WP inverted front end offering 4.9” of travel and a WP monoshock at the rear that provides one more inch of travel than the front. The front end doesn’t offer any adjustment to dial in your preferences, but the rear does have spring preloadadjustment. Braking is handled by a radial-mount, four-piston caliper that cinches down on a 300mm rotor up front and out back a floating single puck grips a 230mm rotor. One great feature that many riders will appreciate that comes standard on the RC 390 is a Bosch ABS system that can be switched off if desired. With the RC 390’s $5,499 price tag its right on par with the other entry-level options from the big four Japanese manufacturers and should make the decision when shopping for a new motorcycle much harder.

Seating

Marker Lights

With a 32.3 seat height the RC 390 enables the rider to have a secure stance while also being high enough for sporty use and real big-bike feeling. KTM engineers integrated the pillion seat into the bodywork lines so that it looks like a real racing bike tail, but still provides excellent comfort for the passenger.

The RC features blinkers incorporated into the backside (forward facing) of the mirror arm. The design not only cleans up the front of the bike but also contributes to improved aerodynamics.

Handlebars

Engine

Clip-on style handlebars are incorporated into the forged aluminum top clamp and lend to a sporty and aggressive riding position.

The 373cc engine features a 89mm bore x 60mm stroke, forged piston, Nikasil-cylinder-coating, and force fed lubrication with power-promoting body-evacuation. The compact design of the engine with its stacked transmission shafts has a remarkably low weight of less than 80 pounds.

Fuel Tank

Info Center

A 2.6 gallon steel fuel tank with just under 1/2 gallon reserve perfectly matches the supersport style and the economic engine delivers impressive efficiency even when ridden hard for a considerable distance.

The 100% digital LCD display has everything you could expect from a state of the art KTM motorcycle, including engaged gear, fuel gauge and service reminder information. Just like supersport racing machines, an RPM alert indicates the optimum moment for up shifting

Windshield

Wheels

The advanced design of the windshield in combination with the aerodynamically optimized bodywork at the front of the bike makes for incredible wind protection for the rider’s chest and arms.

Lightweight, 17, orange-painted, cast alloy wheels are fitted with grippy Metzeler tires; a 110mm wide front and a 150mm at the rear.

Tech Tips/How To

IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL

10 TIPS FOR ENDURANCE MOTORCYCLE RIDING

W

hat’s the longest distance you’ve ever ridden on a motorcycle in one day? Have you ever considered logging a long distance run of say more than 1,000 miles in a day? Did you know there’s a group that focuses on nothing but endurance/long-distance riding? Dubbed, the Iron Butt Association, the organization offers certificates of completion for different distances ridden within a certain time frame. For example there’s the BunBurner for those that knock out 1,500 miles within in 36 hours and the SaddleSore 5,000 for those that laydown 5,000 miles in five days. For the real road warriors there are runs like the 50CC which is riding coast-to-coast in less than 50 hours, or the 100CCC where you ride from one coast to the other and then back to the starting coast in less than 100 hours. For those that seek to achieve the definitive mark of endurance motorcycle riding, there’s the Ultimate Coast-to-Coast where the rider starts in Key West, Florida, and rides across North America to Dead Horse, Alaska, in under 30 days. Or you could just ride 100,000 miles in a year to become part of the 100K Club (which would require an average of 274 miles a day). On the other end of the spectrum the lowest mileage the group will offer a certificate for is the SaddleSore 1,000—riding 1,000-miles in 24 hours—which is a great starting goal for those interested in getting into endurance riding. Riding long distance on a motorcycle is a much different experience than driving a car. For one you’re exposed to the elements which take a toll on your body and can have a major effect on you mentally. Extreme heat, bone chilling cold, rain, and high-speed winds can make a 100-mile stretch feel 54

like a million miles both physically and mentally. You’re also more vulnerable. You don’t have the protection of an enclosed vehicle to guard you from road debris, sand, dirt flying in your eyes, or bees using your exposed skin as a rolling dart board. Riding a motorcycle also requires more active participation, with you moving with the bike in curves and closely paying attention to avoid objects in the road that you might normally drive right over in a car or truck. But then, that’s all part of the reason why we ride motorcycles, for the unique experience that only a motorcycle can provide. Endurance riding isn’t for everyone and definitely isn’t a challenge that should be taken lightly. It’s not like you can just wake up one day and decide “Hey I think I’m gonna go ride my motorcycle 3,000 miles in three days.” You could try and you might succeed, but the majority of people will either end up causing harm to themselves or others on the road, or not want to touch a motorcycle for a month after attempting such a ride. For most motorcycle enthusiasts, riding 1,000 miles in 24 hours or even 1,500 miles in 36 hours isn’t too tough of a challenge, but if you’ve never ridden further than 300 miles in a day, then two consecutive days of 500 mile trips could really put you over the edge. If you decide you want to try a BunBurner 1,000 or SaddleSore you should build up your stamina and get your body accustomed to long miles in the saddle by knocking out several 400-500 mile days within a week. Then as you get more accustomed to sitting in the saddle for long periods of time you can up the mileage and before you know it you’ll be ready to lockdown a BunBurner ride.

A proper fitting full face helmet should be snug on your head. After a couple uses the padding will soften up and you’ll find it will be much more comfortable. The CL-Max II Modular helmet from HJC ($149.99, part# 03-08450211-06) is a great option because it allows you to flip up the chin bar to quickly communicate with others or get some additional air on your face at gas stops. This helmet is also setup to accommodate the ChatterBox XBi2-H Plus Bluetooth Helmet communication system ($249.99, part# 011-701-002), and features built in recesses for the Bluetooth unit and its accompanying speakers.

1

KNOW YOUR LIMIT

This is by far the most important tip; if you feel your eye lids start to get heavy, you’re vision start to blur, or you feel dizzy, get off the road and rest immediately. There is absolutely no reason to risk your safety or the safety of others on the road when you start to get tired. Stepping away from the bike for a while and grabbing a few Zs can help you feel refreshed and more importantly you’ll be alive to tackle another leg of your trip.

3

SAY WHAT?

If you ride a Harley, you probably love the way your exhaust rumbles as you motor down the road. However, after a couple hundred miles that thundering exhaust can leave a ringing in your ears—and in extreme cases lead to tinnitus. Even if you don’t ride a Harley or have a loud motorcycle exhaust there is wind noise that can affect your hearing once you get off the bike. Sure, a full face helmet will do a great job of protecting your ears from the wind but there’s more you can do. Some simple foam ear plugs can do wonders for your

hearing. Hearos offers an assortment of styles including the Xtreme Protection Series ($5.99, part# 350-1011) and the Ultimate Softness Series ($4.99, part# 350-1006). The

Tech Tips/How To Sure, we all love to be at one with our thoughts while riding down the highway, but with a little music in the background can help keep you entertained, give you a boost of energy, and help those long stretches of lonely highway go by much easier. Plus with a set of earphones you get the best of both worlds—wind blockage and crisp clean music. Just be sure to keep the music at a manageable level so you don’t cause hearing damage and so you can clearly hear the sirens from emergency vehicles. Also, it should be noted that some states don’t allow the use of earphones or may only allow one earphone to be in at a time.

GET YOUR STRETCH ON

Sitting in the same riding position for 2-1/2 hours can really do a number on your body. If you can shift your legs to different positions it can help keep your feet from going numb, reduce cramping, and keep the blood

circulating. If your motorcycle has floorboards, simply

sliding your feet from the very back of the boards to the very front can offer mild relief. Installing an engine guard

If you own a late-model cruiser or touring motorcycle then more than likely your mileage range from gas stop to gas stop is probably anywhere from 150-230 miles. While you might be tempted to stretch out your gas stops as a far as possible to try and save time and possibly eliminate a gas stop, the last thing you want is to end up stranded on the side of the road because you ran out of fuel. Staging your stops at about 150 mile intervals is a pretty good idea—if you’re running at 65 MPH that equates to almost 2-1/2 hours of saddle time per leg. I often find it’s easier to manage a long distance trip by breaking it into smaller

If your bike doesn’t have an engine guard don’t fret as engine guards are very easy to install and usually mount to the motorcycle with only three bolts. With Kuryakyn’s Large ISO-Pegs Offset Highway Pegs ($129.99 - $139.99, part# 025-7999) you can mount the pegs directly to the frame/downtubes of your motorcycle or the engine guard. GET SEATED

AirHawk 2 Medium Cruiser Cushion

If you find yourself getting hip pointers, hot spots, or numbness on your backside you’ll spend your entire ride in misery rather than enjoying yourself. A motorcycle seat with 6” of padding doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be comfortable. A thinner seat that has gel padding or high-quality memory foam can offer much more comfort than an overstuffed road couch with low grade cushioning. If you find that your current motorcycle seat just doesn’t cut it for long trips a simple solution is to get yourself a seat pad. Most pads are made of gel and simply mount over the top of your stock seat and secure to the bike via adjustable straps. Saddlemen’s Tech Memory Foam Large Gel Seat Pad ($99.00, part# 356-0810-0521) combines both gel and foam that forms to the rider’s anatomy for premium comfort. In addition, segmented channels within the gel/ foam covering allow for airflow to help with cooling and reduce hot spots. There are also other options like the

THANK A TANK BAG

There are a lot things you’ll want to keep readily available on your journey and stuffing your pockets to the gills can make for a very uncomfortable ride. A tank bag is a must have for any long distance tour. A tank bag can come in really handy to safely store everything from your keys, phone, lip balm, point and shoot camera, sunglasses, water, and spare change. Most tank bags are secured to the top of the tank with either a strap/quick release buckle system or heavy-duty magnets. The magnet versions are pretty slick because nothing is left on the bike when you take them off. The Laguna Mini Tank Bag from Firstgear ($109.95, part# 310-7275) gives you three mounting options: magnets, suction cups, or straps, making it a very versatile bag for a wide range of motorcycles. Not only can this tank bag carry all your small essentials, but the bag zips away from its base so you can quickly and easily take the bag with you when you get to a gas or food stop, ensuring that all your stuff is safe with you. There is also a clear window pocket on top for viewing your paper maps, hand written directions, or using the GPS/maps on your cell phone.

If your seat is old you could always refresh the foam and maybe even upgrade to a memory foam type material or cut out some of the stock foam and incorporate your own gel pad.

Another item that you can store in your tank bag is some candy. Tart candies are great for giving you a bit of a jolt when you feel like you are winding down and hard candies help keep your mouth from getting too dry.

MOTHER TRUCKER

If your route entails riding long stretches of interstate, be cognizant of big rigs. While many truckers are motorcycle riders themselves, many times they can’t see you when you’re directly behind them. Aside from potentially riding in a big rig drivers’ blind spot, when trailing a semi you also need to be weary of flying debris such as tire tread coming at you. A two foot section of tread flying off a big rig tire at 65 MPH and heading for your bike can not only do some major damage but can cause you to lose control of your motorcycle.

9

POWER UP

Adding a power port to your motorcycle is a simple task that can be a real life saver down the road. You’ll most likely have some kind of GPS device mounted to your handlebars to help navigate your route. Some long distance riders have multiple GPS units to provide real

While it might seem like a good idea to use a big rig as a shield when riding in extremely windy situations, there have been many instances where a large gust of wind has overturned a truck and its trailer (especially on sweeping curves)—and that’s definitely not a scenario you want to be alongside of. Your best bet is to get around and ahead of big rigs as quickly and safely as possible. If you can’t get in front of them then fall back and slow your speed down so that you have plenty of time to react if something were to get squirrely with the truck or fly out from under the tires.

time traffic and weather as well as act as a backup in the event the first GPS unit fails. Having a place to easily plug in for power like Kuryakyn’s Handlebar Electrical Power Point ($79.99, part# 025-1423) is a smart idea. Available in two different sizes to mount to either 1” or 1-1/4” handlebars, this power point is easy to install and comes with a long quick disconnect electrical lead with ring terminals to easily connect to the battery. All you need to do is plug in a Bikemaster Dual USB Power Adapter ($14.95, part# 315-2234), connect your phone or device and you’re charging.

KEEP IT RUNNING

While it might seem obvious, making sure your bike is in good running order before your leave for a long motorcycle trip should be at the top of your priority list. That means inspecting everything, making sure all your bolts are tight, fluids are within their operating parameters and topped off, lighting is working properly, and your tires have plenty of tread and are in good shape.

Stop & Go Pocket Tubeless Tire Plugger Kit With CO2

When it comes to your motorcycle tires if you have any doubts about them you should go ahead and get new tires, it’s not worth risking your safety or having to deal with a bum tire when you’re on the side of the road. Check the sidewalls and make sure there is no cracking and look for any foreign objects embedded into the tread. If you’re running tubeless tires the, Stop & Go Pocket Tubeless Tire Plugger Kit With CO2 ($48.95, part#

Slime’s Tire Sealant For Tubed Tires

315-0215) takes up very little space but can be a huge life saver when you’re stranded on the side of a desolate road. The kit comes with a package of rubber mushroom shaped plugs, all the tools needed to install the plugs, and several CO2 cartridges to help re-inflate your tire once plugged. If you have tubes then there’s Slime’s Tire Sealant For Tubed Tires ($4.99 - $7.99, part# 353-3009). While this stuff can leave a bit of a mess inside your wheel/tire it can also help you limp your bike to a place where you can get a new tube/tire installed. Lastly, be sure to carry a small tool kit with you. There are plenty of kits on the market that have a general

that are geared for more specific applications like the Speedkit Compact Tool Kit For Metric Bikes ($32.95, part# 315-4031). This is a great starter kit but you’ll find its best to get a kit like this and then tailor it for your bike. Sort out which tools and sockets fit your bolts so that you can save space and weight by only carrying items you need; and add specialty items or tools that maybe specific to your motorcycle or aftermarket accessories. It’s also a

Remember a tire plug is a temporary fix and intended for slower speeds. It is not recommended to try and plug a hole that is in the sidewall or that is at an angle in the tread—you can have a difficult time getting the plug to seal on the inside. The plugs that come with the Stop & Go kit are intended for holes up to 5/16” (about the diameter of a pencil).

With quality two radio systems that deliver clarity and rugged performance, PCI is the “Go To” company for hardcore racing and leisure offroading enthusiasts alike. Outfitting your UTV with a two-way radio can come in handy in emergency situations when there is an accident or your vehicle breaks down and you need help. They are also very handy for staying in touch with other UTVs in your group or communicating back and forth to your basecamp. One of the problems with two-way radios however, is they do little to help you communicate with the passengers in your car. Between the wind and noises coming from the engine as you speed across the dunes or up a trail, it can get pretty loud and hard to hear what the person sitting next to you is saying. Of course you could yell at one another, but that gets to be exhausting and extremely annoying. To solve this problem and make it easier on the ears for everyone there’s PCI Race Radios’ Intercom setup. Available in several different package options

and with a host of great features and additional add-ons, installing a PCI Race Radio Intercom kit in your UTV can make your offroading excursions much more enjoyable for your family and friends. The main component of PCI’s intercom setup is the 4 Link Pro Elite. This provides the ability for in-car communication through a digitally controlled voice activated (VOX) microphone circuit system where up to four people can talk amongst one another. The 4 Link Pro Elite intercom system is a private, open system that allows anyone in the car with a connected headset to talk and clearly hear what others are saying. In addition to intercom, you and your passengers can also listen to music as the 4 Link Pro Elite allows you to plug in any music device into the intercom. Then when someone starts to talk the VOX system will automatically cut the music

so you don’t have to try and talk over the tunes. The intercom has a common volume level adjustment and a record out option which allows you to connect audio directly to your video recording device (i.g. a GoPro camera) so that your videos are synced up with all the commentary and music coming from the vehicle. By using the Squelch and Volume knobs you can fine tune the volume and control how the audio acts, for example, with the squelch knob turned all the way to the left the music will stay loud and mics will not activate. The nice thing about the Pro Elite Intercom system is that it’s upgradeable; you can add great features like Bluetooth or a Digital Sound Processor (DSP). Adding Bluetooth allows you to wirelessly connect your smartphone or MP3 device to the system and stream music or make/receive calls. Once connected via Bluetooth you simply hit the Bluetooth button on the intercom to receive a call— on some phones the Bluetooth button can also be used to skip to the next song in your playlist. The DSP button eliminates most of the background and wind noise, this is a very handy feature in extreme conditions/environments when it’s really loud or difficult to hear. PCI offers their packages in either 2 person or 4 person kits. The PCI Supreme 4 Communication

System ($1,199.95, part# PCI-1268) comes with everything needed to outfit your UTV for 4 passengers and includes all the cables, PCI’s exclusive wind noise circuit to reduce wind noise, 4 Carbon Fiber headsets, special blue PCI noise cancelling microphones, MP3 Satellite Radio Interface Adapter, and a complete installation guide. For those that live in California or anywhere else that helmets are mandatory there’s the California Supreme 4 Communication System ($899.95, part# PCI-1101). This kit replaces the carbon fiber headsets with in-helmet speaker and microphones. The helmet wiring kits feature noise omitting low gain mic’s as well as high quality speakers. If you want to be able to communicate with others in your UTV caravan or stay in touch with your basecamp there’s the California Ultimate 2 ($1,199.95, part # PCI-1098) or California Ultimate 4 ($1,449.95, part # PCI-1099). These two kits pair the Pro Link intercom with one of PCI’s popular ICOM 5011 mobile 50w two-way radios. Included with the radio is deep mount coax, a no ground plane antenna and two PTT buttons, one for the driver and one for the passenger. If you have a four-seater UTV you can purchase a splitter and additional PTT buttons to allow your rear passengers to communicate over the two-way radio as well.

alignment/tracking issues between the front and rear wheels, thus bringing on the rear steer problem. Add in the fact that the drivetrain is rubber mounted and the back of the transmission case is connected to the front of the swingarm and you have additional side-to-side movement that can upset the bike. The earlier touring models were known to be susceptible to bagger wobble and Progressive Suspension created a solution to address the handling issues for these bikes when the company introduced its Touring Link. Acting as a chassis stabilizer, which tied the rear underside of the drivetrain to the side of the frame, the Touring Link helped manage torsional/side-to-side forces, keeping the drivetrain and swingarm from twisting and upsetting the ride.

1

However, even with the new frame, Progressive Suspension felt bagger models could benefit from stabilizing the rear of the drivetrain and chassis and therefore redesigned its Touring Link to fit with the late model touring bikes. The company now offers its original Touring Link ($229.95; part# 307-0665) that fits ’93-08 models and the newer version ($229.95; part# 307-0664) which mounts up to ’09-’13 touring bikes. Follow along as the Touring Link is installed on a 2012 Street Glide. It should be noted that the new Touring Link will not work with the stock header system on the late model baggers as the cross under pipe will interfere with the transmission and frame mount.

2

The Touring Link kit for ’09-’13 bagger models is nearly identical to the older kit, and consists of the transmission mount, hardware, connecting rod, and frame mount (left to right). The main difference between the older unit and

Personal Profile Angeles County Raceway. Since that time Travis has rapidly progressed, blazing his way from the beginner to intermediate class racing all over California in events like the Ultimate Amateur Series and Transworld Motocross Race Series (TWMXRS). Now, 27-years-old, over the course of his short racing career Travis has won two TWMXRS Championships in the 450 class and has brought home quite a bit of hardware from various Day in the Dirt races. Over the eight years he’s been riding, Travis has owned and raced a 2007 CRF 450X, 2008 YZ450F, and a 2012 KX450F. His current bike is a 2014 CRF 450R which he’s modded by swapping out the stock Air Forks for Showa’s Spring Fork, installing a Hindson clutch, and replacing the exhaust with a full FMF system. While Travis has only been with Chaparral for less than a year (he started back in October) working as our Dirt Bike/ Off road Merchandiser, he’s quickly settled in and become a perfect fit with the company. His passion for dirt bikes shines through in everything he does and you can see that he’s excited to be involved with an industry he loves by the smile he wears on his face every day.

Travis wasn’t always this way though, in fact, he’s what many would call a late bloomer. He actually didn’t twist his first throttle until he was 19 years old. You see, Travis’ parents didn’t want their son getting banged up or seriously hurt riding motorcycles so they steered him towards competitive team sports like soccer and water polo. When he wasn’t on the field or in the pool Travis was usually riding his BMX bike or skateboarding.

likely you can find him riding with his buddies, honing his skills and knocking down his track times at places like Milestone, Perris, Comp Edge or any of the other tracks in the area. Travis says his favorite tracks to ride are Zaca Station and LACRMX. “Every weekend I ride, I try to make it a memorable experience. I’ve met so many people and made so many friends because of dirt bikes. It brings others together and you appreciate the time you get to ride with them.”

Even though it may have taken Travis longer to get his first whiff of two-stroke smoke (the first bike he ever rode was a 1998 YZ125) than most people, he’s made up for it by riding any chance he can and has gotten pretty serious about motocross racing. It helps that Travis has a highly competitive spirit, and even though he enjoyed

As for his future plans, there are two things Travis would like to do, he’d love to head over to Europe and race/ride some of the MXGP tracks, and some day he’d like to build himself something he can ride on the street, something with some real style, like a café racer or bobber.

JUNE BIKE NIGHT

We kicked off the summer the only way we know how, by heating things up with a Bike Night event. People rolled in from all over the Inland Empire and beyond, packing our parking lots with everything from stretched out Busas to radical Ruckuses and a Pittsburg Steelers themed Harley. The event was a great opportunity for mom and dad to bring out the kids to check out all the awesome bikes and watch in awe as stunters Tony Carbajal and Web Whinery Jr. aimed their wheels to the sky and laid down thick patches of rubber across the parking lot. With more than 500 people in attendance there was plenty to do, see, and eat with vendors showing of their latest products, killer in-store deals, and sweet bar-b-que smoke wafting through the air. It will be hard to top the turnout and excitement of this event but our August Bike Night is guaranteed to be a banger.
