For 2017 KTM replaced its 1190 Adventure models with the 1090 Adventure models. Just because the engine is 100cc less than the 1190 does it mean the 1090s are slouches. Absolutely not! These bikes put out more than 120hp and 80-ft-lbs of torque. The Adventure R model is also 20 pounds lighter than its now obsolete brother. While the Africa Twin and KTM have 21”/18” front and rear wheels, the KTM is ready for rough terrain with its Continental TKC80 knobbies. The 1090 is also outfitted with enough gadgetry to equal the space shuttle such as: Motorcycle Stability Control (MSC), different riding modes, multi-mode traction control, ABS, multi-function dashboard, daytime running light (DRL), automatic turn indicator reset (ATIR), adjustable ergonomics, and adjustable windshield height.
Based on looks alone you have to give the Africa Twin high marks. The DCT Africa Twin stands far apart from the others with its exclusive automatic six-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) system. Appreciated by ADV newbies and dusty grey beards, the ability to creep, crawl, and climb over obstacles without having to worry about feathering the clutch or flicking between gears makes for much more enjoyable backcountry excursions. The Honda is a bit more portly than the KTM, but the off set to that is the Honda’s adjustable seat offers nearly an inch of height difference from 34.3” in the standard position to 33.5” in the lower setting, and that can mean the world to those with shorter inseams.
Fans of the V-Strom will appreciate the facelift and upgrades that the 2018 V-Strom 1000XT will deliver. Starting with a re-styled front fairing assembly sporting a more robust snout, the XT has a taller windscreen that can be easily adjusted into three different angles/ heights. Tapered style handlebars and handguards with large vibration damper weights along with DID spoke wheels help make the 1000XT a more dirt worthy motorcycle than before. The new XT does feature some electronic whizbangery with a new IMU-based Motion Track and Combination Brake System and a traction control system. While the V-Stroms might not be known as the most adventurous among ADV fans the 1000XT is definitely a step in the right direction at the right price.

LEATT
KNEE BRACE PANTS
W
hether it’s protecting an injury or trying to prevent one, more and more dirt bike riders are donning knee braces to help keep their lower legs in proper form. With plenty of knee brace options on the market, there are several problems that many riders experience when using knee braces, no matter what brand or type they use, those issues include: slippage, chaffing, and the braces getting caught on or wearing through their moto pants. Known industry wide for its great protective equipment, Leatt designed it’s new Knee Brace Pants to solve pretty much all of these problems. While Leatt calls them Knee Brace Pants (part#: 3007-5017010142, MSRP: $59.99), when in use they are actually shorts, so you still have to wear a pair of moto socks with them. When you slip the pants on you’ll notice that they feature a long pant leg design with large pieces of synthetic leather down towards the insides of the shins/calves, this is to act as a layer of protective material to keep your knee braces from easily rubbing through the pants. Large sublimated Leatt symbols are found at the knees so you know exactly where to pull the pants to as you slip them on. Also there are velcro patches at the thighs and bottoms of the pants. Once you secure your knee braces into place, you then grab the bottom of the pant legs and fold them up and over the knee braces, essentially creating pockets on each leg for the knee braces to set in. The large velcro pieces allow you to tailor fit the pocket so the knee braces will sit exactly where you want them to and prevent them from slipping down. At the waist is a nice wide waist band with a silicone strip on the inside that not only offers a comfortable feel but the silicone helps keep the waist from slipping down. The pants act as a base layer and are made from AntiOder MoistureCool and AirMesh wicking materials to keep you cool and dry. Along with being very breathable and sucking up moisture, the technical fabrics in the Knee Brace Pants prevent chaffing and skin irritation by acting

Synthetic leather material in the inside of the lower leg help protect against your knee braces rubbing or causing premature wear
as a barrier between your skin and the knee braces. One of the other major benefits about the knee brace pants is that it allows you to easily slip in and out of your riding pants without the braces getting caught, snagged, or hung up on various parts of the brace. Your pants slide on with ease. The pants also prevent your moto pants from getting caught in the hinges or other articulating parts of the knee braces as you ride and bend your knees.
Your knee braces fit right over the top of the pants. The pants help protect your skin against the knee brace components, and the moisture wicking material helps reduce chaffing and skin irritation.
The pants, now technically shorts, keep your knee braces from slipping down, protect your skin, and make it much easier to slide your moto pants on and off.

HEAD TO TOE: Ultimate MX Protection As much as you may try, sometimes it’s impossible to avoid injuries when riding your dirt bike. It doesn’t matter if it’s just a slow trail ride or an all-out last lap pass for first place, no matter how experienced you are and as careful and calculated you try to be with your riding, there will be those rare instances where things are just out of your control and you might end up in the dirt. There’s an old phrase that goes “dress for the crash not the ride.” Basically this means, a crash can happen at any time no matter how slow or fast you are going, therefore before you toss a leg over the seat, make sure you’re geared up for the worst. We’re not talking about just throwing on a moto jersey and pants, what we referring to is what’s under that stuff, the protective gear you don’t typically see. Dirt bike protective gear has come a long way since the old timers would just slip on a long sleeve t-shirt, a pair of jeans, ¾ helmet, some lace up leather boots, and then kick their bikes to life. These days we’ve got high-tech, moisture wicking fabrics, lightweight carbon-fiber materials, and enough armored gear to make you look like a modern day knight before you even toss on your jersey or moto pants. Of course even with the best protective MX gear there’s still the chance that you might get injured, but you’re much better with it than without or to borrow another common phrase “better to be safe, than sorry.” We have put together some of our favorite MX protective gear to provide a comprehensive list to cover you from your head to your toes.

Head:
Bell Moto-9 FlexVice Helmet (650-7080718, MSRP: $649.95)
By far the most important body part to protect is your head and one of the best options you have is the Bell Moto-9 Flex Helmet. Based around Bell’s highly popular Moto-9 helmet the Flex incorporates Bell’s latest achievement, a three-layer impact liner comprised of a combination of advanced polymer materials designed to tackle low, mid, and high speed impacts. The liner has been optimized with a slip zone to reduce rotational energy from angular impacts. As the energy of impact increases the higher density layers are engaged to manage the force. The three layer liner features an EPP (Expanded Polypropylene) inner layer for mid speed impacts, an EPO (Expanded Polyolefin) flexible middle layer for low speed impacts, and a EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) outer layer for high speed impacts. The exterior of the helmet is a composite carbon shell construction that is not only extremely tough but is also lightweight to help reduce injury and rider fatigue.
In the event of a crash or impact, the Magnefusion Emergency Removable System (MERS), which features magnetic cheek pads, allows for easy helmet removal. Used in conjunction with the Eject Helmet Removal System, MERS allows first responders to gently remove the helmet from a rider’s head, reducing the potential for secondary neck or spine injuries. The Moto-9 Flex also features Bell’s segmented liner that automatically conforms to a rider’s head for a better fit and more predictable energy management. Outfitted with a removable, washable extended wear interior and Bell’s Velocity Flow Ventilation system the Moto-9 Flex will not only be one of the safest helmets you’ve ever worn but also one of the most comfortable. If you don’t like the Vice design Bell offers the Moto-9 Flex in a variety of graphics and color ways.
Eyes:
Eye protection is second only to head protection in importance. If you can’t see you can’t ride. Oakley’s Airbrake goggles are a leader when it comes to high quality motocross goggles that offer superior eye protection. The key to the Airbrake’s safety is the high impact resistance capability of the innovative lens. Made from injection molded Plutonite, the lens is tested to Oakley Airbrake the highest standards. These goggles meet and exceed ANSI Z87.1 Speed MX Goggle and EN 1938 standards and are put through the same rigorous testing that is required of military spec and law enforcement eyewear. Beside its top rated (757-980, MSRP: $160.00) safety characteristics, Oakley’s Plutonite material is also one of the most optically pure lens materials available and delivers optically correct geometry and clarity. With an extremely wide view the Airbrake gives riders an advantage on the track with better peripheral vision as compared to traditional goggles. The frame is comprised of ultra-strong, yet lightweight, O Matter material and combined with flexible urethane. This allows for a rigid outer frame that holds the lens securely without bending, which can cause visual distortion. For comfort, the goggles also feature a soft and pliable inner faceplate that conforms to your face like it was made just for you. The Airframes do come with a high price tag, however, they are equipped with a fully adaptable and serviceable chassis, allowing you to easily swap outriggers between tear off and roll off configurations, replace worn out foam faceplates, or switch the strap to match your style. Oakley offers the Airbrakes in a wide variety of colorways and signature series versions, and the frames are also compatible with the new Prizm lens.
Neck:
Leatt GPX 6.5 Carbon Neckbrace (3007-101510-0101,MSRP:$499.99)
Not everyone wears a neck brace when they ride, but if you’ve been thinking about getting one, definitely check out the GPX 6.5 Carbon neckbrace from Leatt. Extremely lightweight due to its MaxiWeave Carbon matrix construction, this neck brace weighs in at 1.3 pounds and seports an extremely low profile design for a comfortable fit with easy movement. The GPX 6.5 has been CE tested as certified personal protective equipment and features a rigid structure design which helps to transmit energy from your helmet to your body, bypassing your neck. According to Leatt this is extremely important for reducing neck forces and is called Alternative Load Path Technology (ALPT ). Riders can fine tune the 6.5 for an optimal fit thanks to three-way adjustability and sliding front and rear SureFit adjusters. You can also dial in the rear thoracic strut adjustment with its three-angle positioning to fit most body shapes. With its wide range of

Buyer’s Guide adjustments the GPX 6.5 is an extremely versatile neck brace. The nice thing about the GPX is that you can make all the adjustments and customize the fitment without the need for tools. When not in use the thoracic strut can be folded up so the neckbrace is more compact when storing in your gear bag. Some of the other features that make this a really great option for neck protection is that it has a sculptured, split front for improved comfort and fit, a low profile push-button open/ closure system, and easy-to-use emergency release mechanism. Injected, durable, and easy-toclean foam padding on the top and bottom of the collar aides in comfort while the AirFlow ribbed body padding allows for optimum ventilation to help keep you cool.
Chest 1st Layer:
Motocross is a very strnuous activity that results in extreme body temperatures and lots of sweat which is the perfect combination for irritation and chaffing. To help combat this a good base layer is highly recommended. Fitting your upper torso like second skin, the Virus VMoto Stay Cool Tank Top is made with high tech thread that has been infused with recycled jade. Taking a knock on your funny bone isn’t all that funny, worse yet is a really hard slam against a competitor’s bike. Leatt’s AirFlex Elbow Guards deliver excellent protection without weighing you down or hindering arm movement. The key to these elbow guards is the 3D molded Armourgel panels that are soft and flexible but then stiffen up on impact. They have been CE tested and are certified as Level 1 elbow protection. In order to keep them in place and prevent them from slipping down or rotating around your arm, the guards have silicone laminated, non-slip cuffs as well as cupped elbow grips. To combat heat and sweat, they feature MicroCool and AirMesh fabrics that wick away moisture and reduce odor. Exceptionally thin, these elbow pads are only 6mm thick, and weigh in at 1/2 lbs., which means you’ll hardly notice the extra protection on your body but will be extremely thankful for it when you hit the dirt. 16

Hands:
There’s a lot of danger that your hands and fingers can be exposed to if you’re not riding with a pair of motocross gloves. The Fly Racing Patrol XC Lite Johnny Campbell Signature Series Gloves will protect your digits and keep you twisting throttles. They offer a four way stretch and Lycra finger sidewall for flexibility, comfort, and airflow. On the underside a single layer of perforated synthetic leather in the palm helps improve airflow and provides a lightweight feel. For an extra tacky feel on the levers, the pointer and middle finger tips have silicone grippers incorporated into them as well as the palm area for solid traction on the grips. To keep your knuckles protected there is raised rubber sections over each knuckle, and embossed ultra-light neoprene cuffs result in a more secure and comfortable fit.

of difference in the event of a spill on the track or trail. These compression style shorts feature 6mm 3D molded Armourgel protection pads at the hips and sides of the thighs. Just like the elbow guards, the Armourgel material is soft and flexible but hardens up on impact to help protect your lower body. There is also a removable Coccyx/tailbone protector—if you’ve even taken a hit to the tailbone you know that injury can last an extremely long time and effect nearly every movement you do. For ease of movement the shorts have a pre-shaped 3D design that also aides in better comfort and fit. As an under layer these shorts not only offer impact protection but can help reduce chaffing and sweating thanks to their MoistureCool and AirMesh fabrics that provide moisture wicking, ventilation, and anti-microbial properties.
Knees:
It’s impossible to count the number of motocross careers that have been put on hold or ended due to knee injuries. Your knees act as additional shock absorbers as you ride and they take a lot of abuse and therefore can sustain some serious injuries. Hits, twists, bumps, and bruises, the Mobius X8 Brace is designed to act like armor and protect your knees from just about anything and everything.
Leatt AirFlex GPX 5.5 Impact Shorts (3007-5016000203, MSRP: $99.99)
The braces are constructed with an injection-molded, 20% PIM glass filled nylon shell that is designed to be flexible and rigid to offer maximum comfort while creating a 360 degree range of protection that will not rotate or slip. An overlapping patella area with zero degree CNC forged 6061-T6 anodized aluminum stop leaves no gaps exposed regardless of how far the knee is bent for a full range of protection. One of the key elements of the X8 Brace is the 7x19 strand core type 304 stainless steel CCRS (Continuous Cable Routing System) that adjusts the fit and is designed to be flexible, resist fatigue, and produce nearly 1000 lbs. of tensile strength to reinforce the main ligaments in the knee. This cable system can be adjusted as necessary to ensure a snug and secure fit via the CNC forged 6061-T6 anodized aluminum dial that sits just above the knee cap. The unique figure-8 cable routing system and behind the knee adjustment pad greatly strengthens the joint yet works as freely as your body’s own ligament system to ensure easy maneuverability and protection from twisting or unnatural movements.

While it looks like they would be a pain to put on and take off, the knee (3008-1010103, MSRP: Starting at braces feature velcro straps with TPR (Thermoplastic Rubber) pull tabs numbered in order to provide proper fitment and easy entry and exit. For $399.95) all day riding comfort there is plush molded closed-cell EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) foam and impact absorbing rubber internal padding. They are pricey but the knee pads do come in pairs and are a lot cheaper and a less painful option than going under the knife for knee surgery. Two Wheel Mania | 1800 841 2960 | www.ChapMoto.com

Buyer’s Guide Feet:
As one of the most popular boot models in the motocross scene, the Crossfire is constantly evolving to provide better fitment and protection for riders of all skill levels. The Crossfire 3 SR motocross boots have a lot of great features and have been given some great upgrades from the previous version. The SR in the name stands for Sole Replacement, and this is where one of the biggest changes has been made. If you’re familiar with the Crossfire 2 you’ll recall that the entire sole was serviceable and was held in place with a plethora of bolts. To change out the soles on the Crossfire 3s there are only four bolts and only the center high wear area is removable. This makes for less hardware to worry about and a quicker/easier sole change. Another significant improvement is that the “boat” or inside of the sole features a more cupped and thicker design. This places the rider’s foot deeper into the sole system for more engagement between the boots upper and sole. Fans of the Crossfire legacy will appreciate that these SR boots have an articulated joint on the ankle, called a “Hyper Extension Block”, with completely revolutionized technology. This specific design prevents hyper extension of the ankle, and protects the instep and the posterior tendon when the leg is flexed forwards or backwards for much improved rider’s safety.
Sidi Crossfire 3 SR Boots (043-SID-C3S-WBFY-45, MSRP: $595.00)
Sidi uses an innovative material called Technomicro in the construction of these boots. Technomicro is a composite microfiber material created from strands that are so fine, each one is less than one thousandths the thickness of silk. These fibers act like natural leather skin, but with the advantage of better strength, softer texture and lighter weight. Technomicro is also water resistant, highly resistant to abrasion and tearing and is easy to clean and maintain. Technomicro doesn’t stain and offers reduced weight, more flexibility, and a better feel than leather or other synthetic material boots. The Crossfire 3s are lined with anti-abrasion Cambrelle in the foot area for comfort and the upper is lined with Teflon. These materials will not retain water or sweat on the inside of the boot. The inner heat shield is made from a high grip material and the inner boot gaiter has a larger circumference than the Crossfire 2, making for a tight seal around the rider’s lower leg no matter which knee brace system is used. Similar to the Crossfire 2s, outside the boot you’ll find four micro adjustable buckle closures with indented memory regulation straps. The buckles have just one fixing point (by a screw), which allows them to be easily closed making the boot adaptable to the rider’s position. The buckles, straps, and retaining clips are easily replaceable as are the other bolt on components on the boots, meaning you can get hours and hours of use out of these boots and then rebuild them part by part or from the sole up as needed.

Riding a Speed Rocket at Bonneville Flats In the world of motorsports there’s one particular place you go if you want to go straight and really really fast (we’re talking record speed fast), and that place is the Bonneville Salt Flats. Located in northwestern Utah along Interstate 80, the Salt Flats as many people call them have their own mystique. A natural wonder and attraction for tourists, the compacted, salty, and flat terrain of the Bonneville Speedway has been a draw for speed freaks for more than a century. This is the place where world records are made and dreams are achieved. World renown as the place to go if you want to etch your name in to the annals of speed. In the ‘60s the Flats drew an unknown New Zealander by the name of Burt Monroe and his 1920 Indian Scout where he set three records, one of which was set when he was 67-years-old and still stands to this day. If you’re set on setting a land speed record at Bonneville the good news is there are multiple events such as Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials and Speed Week. Even better news is that there are numerous categories and classes so you can take a strategic approach and go for a record that looks attainable to you. The bad news is, since this is an all-natural “drag strip” weather and environmental conditions don’t always work out and can result in the cancellation of events.
Live the American Dream on an American Icon Riding a Harley is a lifelong dream for many people. Some people don’t want to spend the money it takes to purchase one they simply just want to toss a leg over the seat, fire up the 45-degree V-twin and hear the iconic “potato-potato-potato” sound rumble through the pipes as the motor down the road. The cool thing about a Harley is that it doesn’t matter where you are or where you’re headed, just point to some open road and go! Get lost, meet new people, explore the USA, or simply cruise to a bike night and chop it up with other Harley fans. For some simply just spending a day on a Harley is all it would take for them to leave this world a happy camper. Harley rentals are becoming more and more common across the country and abroad, so you don’t have to take out a second mortgage on the house or dip into your retirement account to get some H-D seat time.
Sturgis If your plan is to rent a Harley rather than buy one then you might as well take advantage of your limited time with the Hog and hit the mecca of all motorcycle rallies. If you own a Harley and haven’t made the trek, what are you waiting for? The Sturgis Rally, the Black Hills Motor Classic, the Black Hills Rally, or simply Sturgis. Whatever you call it, and no matter if you ride a Harley or not, this is THE rally that every motorcycle rider should attend at least once. Sturgis is the most popular motorcycle rally in the US if not the world and for plenty of good reasons: It’s been going on for a long time; this year marks the 77th anniversary. There are miles and miles of great riding like the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway, Needles Highway, Iron Mountain

Feature Road, Spearfish Canyon, the Badlands, and much more. The area is rich with history and significant landmarks such as Devils Tower, the city of Deadwood, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument, Custer State Park, and Wall Drug Store. There’s also plenty of nightlife, people watching, and motorcycles, motorcycles, motorcycles! Okay so earlier we said every motorcycle rider should attend the Sturgis Rally at least once, which is true, but in all actuality you should really go back to Sturgis in the offseason (but not in the winter unless you enjoy riding in snow) because the riding is so spectacular it’s nearly impossible to enjoy it when hundreds of thousands of other bikers are out trying to do the same. Riding on the back of a MotoGP Racer’s Motorcycle We all like to think we are great riders, but truth be told 99% of us couldn’t sniff the exhaust fumes of a MotoGP racer in a head-to-head hot lap. In your head you might think you’re nailing every turn and hammering the straights but until you actually take the passenger seat behind a true professional who can slice and dice a race track with the speed and precision of a master chef’s knife skills you’ll never realize how slow you really are. Aside from pushing your blood pressure through the roof, peeking over the shoulder of a professional racer as you blast around a corner with your heads mere inches from the ground, you just might pick up a tip or two on how to improve your riding skills from a high-speed, first-hand perspective.
Edelweiss Travel trip thru the Alps “The hills are alive with the sound of mo—tor—cycles…” Okay, so you might not be a fan of musicals, but nothing can be more pleasing to the ear than the hum of your motorcycle as you weave through the breathtaking Alps of Austria and Germany. Book a trip with Edelweiss Bike Travel and you’ll be treated to 10,000 foot tall mountain ascents and descents into lush valleys surrounded by pristine lakes aboard the bike of your choice. Almost better than the riding itself is snacking on schnitzel and sipping the finest beers of the region as you reminisce about the day’s highlights with your group.

Smokey Mountains National Park. Why is this part of US 129 so popular amongst motorcyclists? Because it has 318 of motorcyclists’ favorite things packed into an 11 mile stretch. We’re talking about curves baby! That’s right, more than 300 zig-zags of varying bends in just over ten miles. If there was ever a way to put a motorcycle on a roller coaster this is it. Even though there are no intersecting roads to worry about incoming traffic, you do have to worry about oncoming traffic. This is not a road for sightseeing or picture taking (leave that to Killboy), The Dragon requires your undivided attention at all times, otherwise your bike could end up in the Tree of Shame and you could end up worse. The cool thing is if you give yourself about three days you can cover 650 miles of the most picturesque scenery in the country making a big loop and hit both the BRP and TOTD. Actually if you’re heavy handed with the camera you might need to add another day or two because you’ll be making plenty of stops with all the photo ops.
Tail of the Dragon/Blue Ridge Parkway Europe might have the Alps but we have the Apps—the Appalachian Mountains. If you want a winding mountain adventure with jawdropping views then head to the Appalachian Mountains and Smokey Mountains. These two regions are home to two of the most desirable roadways for motorcyclists, the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) and the Tail of the Dragon (TOTD). Covering 470 miles, the Blue Ridge Parkway is a National Scenic Byway and All American Road that runs through North Carolina and Virginia. Distant valley views, dense tree-lined canopies, and meandering mountains are just a few of the sights that draw riders to the BRP, what you won’t find are stop lights, billboards, or other obnoxious distractions. Leisure cruising isn’t a suggestion it’s the law, as the speed limit for the majority of the parkway is 45mph. The Tail of the Dragon starts at Deals Gap at the North Carolina/Tennessee border and then zig-zags into Tennessee along the Great
Route 66 Route 66 has many names, The Mother Road, Will Rogers Highway, and Main Street of America. Established in 1926 as one of the main thoroughfares to lead Midwest motorists seeking sun and opportunity in the west coast, Route 66 has become an iconic piece of US history giving travelers a slice of Americana as it sliced through small town middle America. The original route covered nearly 2,500 miles crossing eight states, starting in Chicago, Illinois to the east and ending in Santa Monica, California to the west. Unfortunately many portions of the original highway have been realigned or the signage has been taken down when the highwaywas decommissioned. You can still make the trek but it may take a little rerouting and map studying to actually cover the

Feature original route. Even though there has been mass construction and infrastructure added since it was created, you can still see plenty of great sites, cruise through small towns, and get a good glimpse of what middle America is all about.
Pan-American Highway If you’re a glutton for punishment then a stroll up or down the 30,000mile long Pan-American Highway (PAH) is the trip for you. Before you start packing your motorcycle luggage however, there are a couple things you may want to do. First of all, you might want to make sure you have plenty of vacation time—we’re talking like more than a month’s worth—as the record for the fastest trip along the route on a motorcycle is 34 days. The other thing you’ll want to do is make sure you brush up on your French and Spanish as besides Alaska and the lower 48 you’ll be traveling through Canada, Mexico, Central America, and South America. The PAH is comprised of a mix of official and unofficial roadways leaving you varied options for travel in certain sections. The north end starts at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska and the southern end finishes up at Ushuaia, Argentina. Packing for this trip will be a feat in itself as you’ll need gear to handle just about every climate and terrain imaginable from iced over roads, lush forests, and 10,000-foot mountain peaks, to scorching deserts, and desne jungles. Fuel management will also be an issue as there are a few stretches with no services for more than 200 miles. It’s also important to familiarize yourself with the Darien Gap. While it’s only 60 miles wide, it’s a treacherous and sluggish stretch of travel that’s a mix of marshes, swamps, and rivers and definitely isn’t for the weak willed—it’s highly suggested you opt out and rely on a fairy for a quicker and less stressful crossing.
24
Great River Road Where Route 66 cuts through America east to west, The Great River Road (GRR) traverses the mighty Mississippi from the north to south giving travelers another cross section of middle America. The GRR runs just over 2,000 miles from the US/Canada border in Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico in Louisiana. Comprised of a series of state and local roadways, a large portion of the GRR running from Minnesota to Arkansas has been designated as a National Scenic Byway. You can meander your way up or down Old Man River by following the green and white pilots wheel road signs. You could make the trip in about 36 hours but why push it? Give yourself four days or so and take your time to dip a toe in the water, do some riverboat gambling, and enjoy the multitude of small towns and BBQ you’ll encounter along the way.

DUNLOP SPORTMAX ROADSMART III TIRES
C
an you have your cake and eat it too? Well, while motorcycle tires are consumables, I don’t really think you want to toss one onto your plate and gnaw on it. But in a figurative sense, with Dunlop’s new Sportmax Roadsmart III tires, yes, yes you can have your cake (long distance mileage) and eat it too (high performance throughout the life of the tire). Back in the day a motorcycle tire was a motorcycle tire was a motorcycle tire. They were round, made of rubber, and featured a tread pattern designed to offer grip for a broad range of riding styles and applications. As materials and technologies advanced, competition and selection grew to the point that tire manufacturers were able to develop offerings directed at specific motorcycling segments and applications. Developed as the replacement to the Sportmax Roadsmart II, with this latest tire, Dunlop aimed its focus not only at a specific segment of the motorcycling community but at one tire in particular from one of their biggest competitors. The new Sportmax Roadsmart III tire was created for the sport touring community to provide them with a tire that was long on mileage without heavily sacrificing key performance characteristics (dry/wet grip, dry/wet cornering, and comfort) towards the end of the life of the tire. Encompassing a large swath of riders, the sport-touring community has significantly grown in popularity over the years, which makes sense as to why Dunlop would want to create a tire for that market. Beyond that though, competition-wise one of its biggest competitors, Michelin, had a strong hold of that category with its Michelin Pilot Road 4 GT which was often selected over the Roadsmart II and Dunlop wanted to change that.
To achieve everything they wanted with the Roadsmart III (RSIII) tires Dunlop utilized wear-resistant compounds, a Multi-Tread design composition, new sidewall construction, and changed the tread design. Dunlop’s exclusive MT Multi-Tread design puts a harder more road resistant rubber compound in the center section of the tire and a softer compound at the sides that offers superb 26

grip from 30 degrees to maximum lean angle. In conjunction with the multi-tread composition, an advanced resin formula helps increase overall wet grip. By addressing sidewall construction Dunlop was able to improve the shock absorption characteristics of the tire making for a smoother ride over large and small inconsistencies in the road and therefore reducing rider fatigue. The narrower sidewall also contributes to the tire’s overall precise handling abilities. The engineers also wanted to keep the handling on the RS III predictable across the entire surface of the tire so they slightly changed the radius of the rear tire to ensure that the rider would have a consistently smooth feel as they transitioned from the center patch to the sides of the tires when leaning in and out of corners. Along with steady handling, the new profile of the rear tire has been designed to increase the footprint for a more stable ride and to extend the longevity of the tire.
Hard on the inside soft on the outside.
Testing proved riders on Dunlop’s Sportmax Roadsmart III tires could have their cake and eat it too.
For those that have owned or ridden on the RS II’s you may notice that the tread pattern on the RSIII has significantly changed with a new design as well as additional large C shaped sipes. The new tread pattern was designed to improve wet weather performance and features sipes that span from the side and run out toward the center of the tire as they cross through the side sipes. They vary in width and depth and have been integrated to help wick water away from the contact patch.
To confirm that the new RSIII met their goals and expectations, Dunlop put the tires through their own rigorous testing as well as had the tires tested independently utilizing third parties. In their own testing at their Huntsville Proving Grounds in Alabama, Dunlop put a set of Roadsmart IIIs up against Michelin’s Pilot

27
Product Spotlight Road 4s (each with 3,000 miles on them and mounted on a on a 2015 BMW R1200RT) and found the handling of the Roadsmarts resulted in significant performance advantages in numerous categories over the Pilot Road 4s, including wet and dry grip, steering response, and compliance. In independent testing, Texas Test Fleet put RSIIIs and Pilot Road 4s on a 2016 BMW R 1200RT and found that they got more than 12,000 miles out of the rear RSIII—3,000 more miles than the Michelin. The results for the front RSIII was even better with around 20,000 miles while the Michelin got just over 15,000 miles. Over in Europe, Germany’s Motorrad Test Centre gave the tires a go against competitive tires from Bridgestone, Pirelli, Metzeler, and Michelin and found that the RSIII beat out all them in mileage with the rear lasting 19% longer and the front running 82% longer. In addition to the significant mileage findings, according to Dunlop, as compared to some other high-mileage tires that start out with light, linear steering and stability under braking, and then become heavier steering, less linear and less trustworthy as the miles roll up and the tire profile changes with wear, their engineers placed a priority on even wear to maintain light steering, consistent braking and handling, and excellent ride quality over the long life of the tires. So not only has Dunlop achieved its goal of creating a long lasting tire that performs at a higher level throughout its lifetime, they have developed a tire that beats out their main rival in the category. The Sportmax Roadsmart III tire is perfect for the demanding miles of the ever growing sport-touring world and Dunlop is so proud of their accomplishments with this tire that they have coined a new term for the riding segment: Performance Touring. For those that aren’t into sport touring, the good news is there are fitments for the lighter weight bikes as well. Chaparral Motorsports takes motorcycle tires very seriously, (have you seen our 25,000-foot plus tire department?) and so for the past several months our tire department manager, Bill Walsh has been testing the new Roadsmart IIIs on his 2001 Honda ST1100. Here is what he has to say about them.
Bill out testing the new Roadsmart III’s with the Dunlop team and some other invited riders.
Bill’s 2001 Honda ST 1100 is ready for its new Dunlop tread.
New Shoes For Old Feet I have logged more than 50,000 miles on my 2001 Honda ST1100 over the last five years. The OEM tires on the ST1100 were Bridgestone’s. However, when I purchased the bike, used, back 28
in 2009 it had 3,500 miles on it and it was fitted with Battlax BTO21. Due to the ST1100’s unique rear tire size, 160/70ZR17, my replacement tire choices were limited, therefore I had only expe-

rienced the Battlax BTO23, the Bridgestone T30, and more recently the T30GT. I was fairly satisfied with the Bridgestone’s, they handled well in all conditions and I was able to average more than 10,000 miles per set. Thanks to the crew at Dunlop I was able to fit pair of new Shoes on my old ST1100. Back in February, Dunlop invited a group of seasoned riders (myself included) out to the Ventura area in Southern California for a ride day to test out the new Roadsmarts IIIs. The ride started on a nice sunny 65 degree day as we proceeded to twisty Route 33 to Ojai. Due
to a very rainy winter in Southern California there were many wet spots along the ride as well some dirt and mud patches. Considering the obstacles, after a short time piloting my ST1100 on the Roadsmart IIIs my confidence steadily grew due to exceptional grip while breaking into a corner and accelerating hard out of the corner on the dry pavement. Additionally, the Roadsmart III front tire feedback offered very neutral steering and the rear delivered exceptional grip and predictability. I was impressed with the overall handling of the new Roadsmart III’s.
Roadsmart III sizing chart.
Later in the afternoon, after many of the wet patches had dried, the ride continued on to the famous winding ribbons of Mulholland Hwy. Again, the new Roadsmarts inspired confidence with positive feedback. Mulholland Hwy has many tight switchbacks and the Roadsmart III’s maintained excellent grip while transitioning from right to left through the twisties. The total ride with the group was 150 miles and then I continued an additional 90 miles of freeway back home. All in all it was a long day of riding on the new Roadsmart III’s.
I commute on CA freeways to and from work approximately 350 miles a week on my ST1100, and since that test ride with the Dunlop team I have logged about 5,000 miles on the Dunlop Roadsmart IIIs and they still look new and handle just as good as they did when new (I run my PSI at 38 front and 42 rear). As I mentioned, the Bridgestones averaged a little more than 10K miles so time will tell as to the max mileage on the new Roadsmarts.

Some of the highlights of the redesigned model include an 11-percent increase in top end power thanks to some crafty internal work with more valve lift, a higher compression ratio, a more direct flow for the intake system, and a revised cylinder head. Knowing that hole shots are key factors to winning races Honda engineers addressed the low down as well with improved
torque performance and a 5-percent bump in acceleration off the line. A great performing engine is useless unless it’s cradled in an equally strong chassis. So to that end Honda built upon its legacy of great mx frames and created its seventh generation aluminum frame. More compact and with a lower center of gravity, the aluminum frame was designed with a shorter distance between the swingarm pivot and the rear wheel, which according to Honda, the new package equates to unprecedented levels of rear traction. To keep the bike light, agile, and streamlined Honda added a new titanium fuel tank and then dressed

the bike in sleek new plastics. In the suspension department, Honda drew back to what worked well in the past and ditched the airfork from the 2016 model for a 49mm Showa steel spring front fork. This change alone can mean the world of difference for riders, as many are still finding the airforks to be tricky to dial in. While all these features are great, probably the most important new news to many enthusiasts for the 2017 450R was the availability of an optional electric start. The addition of electric start could play a major factor into whether a race is won or lost due to a damaged/broken kicker pedal or an exhausted rider that just doesn’t have the energy to kick over a stubborn bike. We have a hive of Honda fans on staff and the Chaparral Motorsports mod team was eager to get its hands on one of these fresh new machines; so as soon as the delivery truck arrived with the first shipment one of the crates was hauled into the backroom where a collection of new aftermarket parts and accessories could be installed. Our offroad apparel manger, Travis Snyder, is a huge Honda guy so he was stoked when he was tapped to lead the charge with the parts selection for this CRF 450R project which has been dubbed, Red Alert. Travis owns and races a 2014 CRF 450R, so he was pretty confident on exactly what he wanted to do with the build. “I wanted the bike to basically be race-ready with everything a rider would want,” Travis stated. “The only thing we didn’t do was mess with the engine or the
suspension, those kinds of changes are more based on rider preference so we left that to the new owner to address.” Starting with the wheels we ditched the stock hoops and went with a more durable setup put together by our friends over at Dubya. Travis had them lace up a set of black DID Dirt Star Rims with matching black spokes and silver nipples and then tie everything together with red anodized Talon hubs. Outfitted with the stock Dunlop GeoMax tires, before the wheels were installed the swingarm was sent out to get baked in black powdercoat and the stock triple clamps were replaced with Ride Engineering clamps. While Ride Engineering offers the clamps in several offset options Travis stuck with the stock 22mm offset to keep the handling the same. Machined out of 2024 T6 aluminum the new clamps are a little bit lighter than stock and according to Ride Engineering they offer more flex on the bottom clamp, have revised steering stops, and a larger profile top clamp, all of which equates to better handling. In the braking department the stock components were upgraded with a mix of goodies from Galfer and Ride Engineering. Up front one of Galfer’s massive 280mm Tsunami brake rotor kits was mounted to the wheel and at the fork leg a Ride Engineering Billet Caliper was installed with a Galfer steel braided brake line. This combination of components was chosen because it would drastically improve braking performance with better modulation, less fade, and much improved heat dissipation via the over-sized rotor and
Feature larger pistons and cooling fins cut into the backside of the caliper. Even though the engine was left untouched, the 450R did get a boost with the addition of a full Signature Series RS-9T FS TI-TI-CF Exhaust system from Yoshimura. An all-new system designed to complement the new Honda engine package, the system features an extremely light weight titanium header and tail pipes with dual tapered mufflers capped with carbon fiber tips. This exhaust is not only 1.4 lbs. lighter than stock but has been dyno tested to provide much improved throttle response, broader power, as well as better mid-range and top end power.
As mentioned earlier, the 2017 Honda is available with a dealer-installed electric start, so naturally we went with this option and had our guys slap in the push-to-start kit. Actually it’s not that simple, installation takes a couple hours and involves dipping into the top end, but the end result is much quicker and easier starting when in a hurry. Obviously, a battery was required for this setup, so to keep things as light as possible we reached for a Featherweight Lithium Battery from WPS. We did break into the drivetrain to upgrade the standard clutch package with a Billetproof Conventional Clutch Kit from Hinson. The complete clutch assembly features eight plates
Black powdercoated Ride Engineering triple clamps look slick against the glimmering golden hue of the fork legs. The new clamps feature the same 22mm offset as stock but are lighter and provide a little more flex.
With its larger pistons and cooling fins machined into the backside, the billet front brake caliper from Ride Engineering is a significant upgrade over the stock unit.
The Flo Motorsports pegs offer great bite with their wide platform and replaceable stainless steel cleats.

(one more than stock) and is designed to deliver a host of improvements such as smoother clutch engagement, better heat dissipation, longer life for the individual components, and better allaround performance. Gearing was addressed as well with the stock 13 tooth sprocket left in place and the rear 49 tooth replaced with a 50 tooth red Talon sprocket wrapped in a DID 520MX Gold/ Black chain. This slight change in the gearing ratio will help give the new owner a tad more lower end power and acceleration for hole shots and digging out of corners. In order to stay abreast of service intervals a Works Connection Hour Meter and Maintenance Timer with a tach was mounted to the frame just behind the steering head. To keep tabs on the heat being generated, several CV4 Temp sticks were added to the radiators and engine. Speaking of the radiators, a set of Works Connection Radiator Braces were installed as an added layer of protection in the event of a tip over or crash. When it came to the hand and foot controls Travis set the bike up with a Renthal RC Bend Fatbar mounted in Ride Engineering bar mounts. The bars were outfitted with Ultra Tacky Dual Compound Renthal Half Waffle grips and Arc Folding Levers. Down below the stock shift and brake levers were left in place but the footpegs were tossed aside for a set of Flo Motorsports footpegs. Made from high grade 7075 T6 aluminum and precision machined, the Flo pegs have a wide platform and stainless steel replaceable cleats to deliver exceptional
performance and improved handling. While the 450R received new plastics for 2017, Travis decided to change it up a little by going with an all red plastic set from Acerbis. To matchup with the black powdercoated swingarm the stock red lower fork guards were switched out for a black set from Acerbis. To give the bike a more race-ready appearance, the plastics were sent out to Magik Graphics for a custom red, white, and black graphic design. A host of accessories were thrown at the bike to add a bit of a factory look. We added Works Connection

Lastly, the bike was capped off with a Think Technology Lite Seat Foam wrapped in a custom seat cover done up by Magik Graphics. The seat is a significant upgrade to the bike as the foam from Think Technology is the same material that’s used in the aerospace industry and weighs only 3 ounces which is nearly 1-1/2 lbs. lighter than the stock seat. The seat makes for a significant amount of weight savings from an often overlooked component on the bike.
have fallen in love with the bike and hated to see it roll onto the sales floor. They were able to find solace in the fact that more than likely someone local will purchase the bike, so they’ll probably get to see it in its natural environment on one of the nearby tracks.

//////////// /////GET LOW INSTALLING A DR. D RADIATOR LOWERING KIT
W
hen it comes to racing dirt bikes, riders and their mechanics will spend countless hours and hundreds or maybe even thousands of dollars to get the bikes performing at their absolute best. If you have the money and skills to toil away on your bike forever that’s great, but sometimes there are simple solutions that can make a difference to help give you an advantage over the competition without blowing your total racing budget. Dr. D aka Doug Dubach of Dubach Racing has turned his years of racing experience and extensive knowledge of tuning and dialing in dirt bikes into a business that supplies riders with great quality products that can help improve handling and overall rider satisfaction. One of the keys to having a well-balanced bike that can smoothly shift its weight in and out of corners is a low center of gravity. Many people may not think about it but the aluminum radiator assembly and accompanying coolant can play a role in how a dirt bike handles. It
36
may not be a significant amount of weight or liquid sloshing around but when it comes to racing, every advantage matters no matter how small. Back in the day, mechanics would spend hours cutting and welding the radiators in an effort to lower their mounting location and to improve handling. With this knowledge in mind, Dr. D created a radiator lowering kit that is available for a variety of Honda, Kawasaki, and Yamaha models. Even though the kit only drops the radiators by about an inch (27mm), that small amount helps give the bike a lighter feel at the top while making it easier to dig in and get better transitions in and out of corners. The Radiator Lowering Kit comes with all the necessary hardware, is very quick and easy to install, and it’s also extremely inexpensive making it one of the top mods you can make to your bike for very little money. Follow along as we show you how to install the kit on a 2016 Yamaha YZ 450F.

1 This is the Dr. D Radiator Lowering Kit (part#: DRD-3041, $153.95) for the 2016 YZ450F. Included is the hardware and eight aluminum, CNC-machined, lowering links that have been anodized red. Take note that there are four thicker links and four thinner links.
5 Once the fluid has drained, loosen the two hose clamps on the short piece of hose below the right side radiator.
6 2 Start by removing the side covers/radiator shrouds on both sides of the bike.
Next, remove the hose from in between the radiator and water pump. Place the hose on a hard surface and using a sharp utility knife or industrial scissors cut 3/8 off of one end of the hose.
7 3 Next, remove the plastic radiator louvers.
4 On the right side of the bike you are going to have to trim the radiator hose down a little bit so grab a clean container and remove the radiator drain plug. After you have removed the drain plug take the radiator cap off to allow the fluid to drain more freely. Note: if your radiator coolant is still good you can reuse it, otherwise make sure you have some fresh coolant on hand to refill the radiators.
On the left side of the bike you don’t need to cut the radiator hose but you do need to remove the radiator end of the hose and reroute it so it runs under the clutch cable.
8 When it comes to installing the lowering links you can start on the left or right side. Remove the two fasteners that secure the radiator to the frame and slip the thicker lowering links between the radiator and frame (the thicker end of the link points towards the ground). Use the flat allen head fasteners to secure the top of the links to the frame.

13
9 Next, use the stock bolts to secure the radiator to the bottom of the lowering links.
Next, line up the side cover/radiator shroud so that it meets up with the tops of the lowering links.
14 Use the stock fasteners to secure the side cover/shroud to the Dr. D links.
10 This picture gives you an idea of how the radiator mounts to the frame with the links installed and how the links drop the radiator down about 27mm from the original position.
15 Now repeat the process on the other side and be sure to double check that all your hoses are reinstalled, hose clamps are tight, everything is securely fastened, and that your bike has plenty of coolant.
11 Reinstall the radiator louver, and then replace the radiator cover/shroud using the rear mounting bolt to hold it in place.
16 12 Use the supplied flange bolts to secure the bottom half of the thinner lowering links to the radiator.
38
The install should take about 15-20 minutes and only requires a few hand tools and maybe some new coolant. For a little more than $100 you’ll notice the bike handles better with a lighter side-to-side feel and the ability to easily make changes or adjustments when in the corners.

WEEKEND ADVENTURE: CAL CITY AND SURROUNDING AREAS
O
ne of the best things about southern California, besides our weather, is that we are surrounded with incredible offroad recreation areas. From high altitude mountain ranges lined with winding single track and fire roads to wide open deserts you can find any type of terrain to suit your riding desires. This past winter our vehicle sales manager, Andy Anaya, took a trip near the California City OHV area with family and friends for a weekend of camping some two and four wheel exploring. California City is about 100 miles north of Chaparral Motorsports and sits inside a triangle made up of SR 14 to the west, US 395 to the east, and SR 58 to the south. Many dirt bike en-
42
thusiasts may know California City from its dirt bike track, Cal City MX. The area is an offroad lover’s dream because it covers hundreds and hundreds of miles across the Mojave Desert in Kern and San Bernardino Counties with awesome trails and camping. California City is one of the most populated cities in the area and sits in the south west corner of the triangle. Camping is located all throughout the area and is accessible via the numerous paved and unpaved roads that string out from the main highways. While the roads leading out to the camping spots can be a little rough, most of the spots are accessible for four-wheel drive trucks towing fifth wheels and toy haulers. For

There are a ton of places to ride around the triangulated area that is comprised of SR 14, US 395, and SR 58.
those looking to stray from the crowds there are plenty of routes to lead you away to remote areas. You can often find large groups staked out near the Cuddeback Rd. and 20 Mule Team cross roads off of US 395, which is where Andy and his family camped on this trip. Just be well prepared, the majority of the area is dry camping and services can be sparse beyond Cal City/Borax Bill Park and other populated areas.
trails cut through scrub brush but there are plenty of buttes and even rocky mountains to climb. One thing to take note of is that the area was used for mining back in the day so there are several open mines and old cement washes/structures scattered throughout. The open pit mines are protected with fencing to help keep offroaders from falling in but you definitely want to be weary of your surroundings when cruising around at night.
The area is ideal for everything from UTVs to dirt bikes and suitable for riders of all skill levels. Andy and his family took a collection of Honda 50s, ATC 70s, a Yamaha YZ 450F, a Can-Am Maverick Max 1000, and a couple of Polaris RZRs. Much of the terrain is desert
Some of the destinations you’ll want to make a point of visiting are Burro Schmidt’s Tunnel, downtown Randsburg, Cuddeback Dry Lake, Husky Memorial, Freemont Peak, Johannesburg, and the Trona Pinnacles.
Two Wheel Mania | 1800 841 2960 | www.ChapMoto.com
Many of the surrounding areas were used for mining so be aware of open pits and washes.
Burro Schmidt’s Tunnel is a neat place to visit but can be scary I you’re afraid of confined spaces or dark places. It’s basically a half-mile long, tunnel in the side of a mountain that was dug out by miner
43
Feature William “Burro” Schmidt with shovels and some dynamite. Supposedly he started digging the tunnel in 1902 as a short cut to haul his ore findings to a smelter on the other side of the mountain. Cut through solid granite, Schmidt spent 33 years working on the tunnel and moved an estimated 5,800 tons of rock to complete the project.
Cuddeback Air Force Range back in the 1940s and was used as an artillery range by the US Army. The Air Force used it from the 1950 to around 1983 first as a landing site and then as a range. Besides being wide open and flat you might find some old artillery shells, 22mm casings, air craft parts, shrapnel, and other miscellaneous items scattered around the lake bed.
If ghost towns are your thing then a ride out to Randsburg is in order. Referred to as a living ghost town, Randsburg has a population of less than 100. The town came about in the late 1800s as a mining camp when gold was found at the Rand Mine. At the heart of the town is Butte Ave, a tourist’s dream with its mix of antique shops, gift shops, a general store, a real western saloon, a jailhouse, and other historical buildings. These days the town is most well-known for its Old West Days event held in September.
Fremont Peak is a great place to do some hill climbing and get a good view of the area. If you venture east onto Fremont Peak Rd. off of 395 you take the road until it hits the base of Fremont Peak mountain. There are trails that you can then take to explore the mountain. At the top there is a memorial and lookout point which offers fantastic views of the valley. If you continue on down the other side you can ride out to the famed Husky Memorial/Monument. The trails on the mountain are all single track so they are only suitable for motorcycles. If you have UTVs they’ll have to take the road to skirt around the range.
Cuddeback Dry Lake is exactly what the name implies a dry lake bed. It’s about 6 miles long and 4 miles wide. The area was also known as
Phot op! The Anaya clan making use of an old tractor tire.
The Trona Pinnacles are definitely a site to see and fun to explore.

Two Wheel Mania | 1800 841 2960 | www.ChapMoto.com
Two Wheel Mania | Issue 6 | July 2017
If you’re in the area, one ride you absolutely should do is out to the Husky Monument. Not officially recognized by the BLM, the Husky Monument is a memorial site that was established back in 1987 for dirt bike enthusiast Jim Erickson, by his friends in the Desert Zebras Motorcycle Club. After Mr. Erickson’s passing his friends took his 390 Husqvarna dirt bike submerged the wheels in blocks of wet cement and then buried the blocks in the dirt. Over the years more and more people have setup their own memorials for family and friends creating a large circular area spanning some 60 feet wide with plaques, dedications, and personal artifacts. Last year Andy and his family set up a memorial for his dad at the site with a large aluminum laser cut number plate, a plaque with his dad’s photo, and his dad’s toolbox cemented into the ground. The
memorial now gives Andy and his family even more incentive and heartfelt purpose to travel out to the area. Located just to the east of Randsburg is Johannesburg, another old mining town and ghost own. Besides being home to many miners in the 1800s, the town became well established due to the Randsburg Railway. The town got its name from miners who had worked in Johannesburg, South Africa; these days many people shorten the name down to just Jo-burg. Another cool spot to check out if you like weird geological formations is the Trona Pinnacles. The Trona Pinnacles are about 40 miles north east of Cal City and the closest town to them is Ridgecrest off of SR 178. A very unique and astonishing site, the pinnacles are natural formations of porous rock that formed as deposits when springs interacted with other bodies of water
Two Wheel Mania | 1800 841 2960 | www.ChapMoto.com
and formed what’s know as tufa spires. The jagged spires were created some 10,000 to 100,000 years ago under water and now jut up from the Searles dry lake bed to create a drastic contrast to the otherwise flat and subtle surroundings. They vary in size ranging anywhere from short and squat to 140 foot tall behemoths. If the pinnacles look familiar, that’s because they’ve been featured in numerous photos, commercials, TV shows, and movies. There are many more sites and areas to visit and ride when you head out to this offroad paradise. We didn’t even talk about Jawbone, Dove Springs, or Red Rock Canyon State Park. This article covers just a sliver of the OHV areas there are in Southern California. It would take a year full of weekend trips to ride them all.

But as any enthusiast will tell you, stock sucks. Why roll a basic UTV when there are a million options from the aftermarket industry to make it more comfortable, look better, or perform better? Below we have given you a run down on just a few of the options available to customize a UTV to make it your own.
About Our Radius UTV Cages Our two-seater and four-seater AnnLynn Radius Cages bolt directly to the chassis in place of the stock cage drastically improving the appearance over stock, offering a more streamlined and performance driven look. Additionally, all of our cages come with an aluminum roof and mounting tabs/brackets for all the accessories you may need (light bars, rear lights, flag mounts etc.). Our Radius cages are 100-percent American made and meet our strict standards. The cages start out as CAD/CAM designs which have been carefully studied to ensure structural integrity through cross bracing, triangulation of the vertical pillars, quality materials, and excellent craftsmanship. A center spine follows the same arch as the outer frame rails and provides added structural support for the overall cage design and roof. The rear inside pillars run vertically from the rear cross member to the chassis mounts at the bed. This design is similar to the stock cage design and distributes stress to the stock chassis mounts coming up through the bed. All of our cages are hand-built. We use ASTM1020 1-3/4”OD x .095” steel tubing made from the Drawn Over Mandrel (D.O.M.) process. We choose to use D.O.M. steel tubing because it has high mechanical properties, yields very strong material with greatly controlled dimensions, offers a uniform wall thickness, and has easy workability with smooth OD and ID surfaces resulting in a cleaner finished product. There are other types of steel tubing that could be used to build roll cages but we have found tubing made from the D.O.M. process to be excellent material providing superb structural support at an affordable price. Each piece of tubing is precisely laser-cut to length, notched, then bent on a CNC-bender. The bones/ mount lugs are CNC-machined out of billet steel to fit up perfectly with the stock chassis attachment mounts. When it comes to fabrication, our inhouse professional welding staff maintains strict tolerances by utilizing a Polaris factory chassis with custom fixtures setup as a frame jig. The structural components of the cages are all MIG welded, while
50
the smaller tabs and mounting brackets are TIG welded. Once fabrication is complete each cage and roof is shipped out for powder coating to help keep the cage looking sharp even after hours of fun.

AnnLynn Radius Cages are available for 2-seat or 4-seat RZRs with three models to choose from. 1. AnnLynn Manx Radius Cage: This cage features our streamlined look with the rear inner legs running down at an angle and mounting to the chassis mounts at the bed just like the stock cage. The rear of the outside rails stretch to the back of the vehicle and are secured to the end of the bed. 2. AnnLynn Manx Radius CageTall: This is nearly identical to the AnnLynn Manx Radius Cage, the only difference is that it offers more head room. The highest point in the arch is 1 inch taller than the Manx Cage and there is an additional 2 inches of room at the front of the arch. 3. AnnLynn Radius Cage With Bumper: This cage has the same height and dimensions as the standard Manx cage, the only difference is that it has an integrated rear bumper. The back of the cage extends past the bed and then joins into the bumper which spans the width of the bed. The bottom of the bumper mounts where the stock rear radius arms bolt up and is secured in place via a 3/8” steel plate. The heavy duty plate replaces the stock 1/4” aluminum plate, offering a more robust design. This cage provides protection for the taillights and the entire back of the RZR.

Harnesses
The stock rider/passenger securement systems in most UTVs are automotive style retractable seat belts. They do their job, but for improved safety, protection, and comfort upgrading your vehicle with some quality harnesses is a good idea. The most common harness is a 4 point harness, which basically has 4 attachment points; over each shoulder and then across the lap on each side of the hips. A 5 point harness is an even more secure route to go as it adds an additional strap than runs between the legs and attaches below the seat. Harnesses are offered in a variety of strap widths such as 2” and 3” versions. While they may look more cumbersome and awkward to get in and out of than the stock seat belts, you’ll find that the shoulder straps are padded for added comfort

and they feature easy to use clip in style sternum buckles (sometimes this is removable) at the chest and a layover latch style securement at the middle of the lap. PRP is one of the more popular harness makers in the UTV scene and they have a great selection of styles and colors to suit your needs. Pro Armor is another option to choose from and some of their harnesses feature Velcro and mesh pockets in the shoulder straps to store things like your phone. KLIM
R1 AIR FRESH AIR HELMET
W
hat’s the worst thing about ripping trails and shredding dunes in your UTV? Trying to scrape off the layer of grime from your teeth while also trying to rehydrate your mouth and regain some sense of taste other than dirt. Even if you wear a full face helmet when in your RZR or Can-Am Maverick, you know that there is still a lot of dust and debris that gets swirled around in the cockpit and makes its way into your smiling, laughing, gaping maw as you skip across whoops or launch off jumps. There’s a solution to this dirty mouth problem, and it’s one of those things that you may have never considered but as soon as you try it you’ll never ride around without it. I’m talking about Klim’s new R1 Air Fresh Air Helmet—yes, they are so proud of and confident in this helmet that they used the word “AIR” twice when naming it. The R1 Air Fresh Air Helmet features a top vent cover with a hose port integrated into it which allows fresh air to be pumped into the helmet via a separate fresh air system. With a steady supply of filtered air flowing into the helmet it helps keep dust out, gives you clean breathing air, and prevents dust build up in the inside of the face shield. The Fresh Air helmet comes with a skirt that velcro’s around the bottom of the helmet to help block out dust and keep you clean. By pumping air into the R1, a positive air pressure environment is created, which helps prevent dust from flying in when you open the face shield. Another added benefit is that the helmet can help keep your head cool. When riding in extreme heat and your head starts to sweat or your hair is damp, the air flowing into the helmet helps cool you off similar to the effects of a swamp cooler. With safety and convenience in mind, Klim designed the R1 Air Fresh Air Helmet to meet/exceed DOT specifications with its polycarbonate ABS shell and dual density EPS liner. The helmet also features an integrated drop-down, tinted, sun shield that can be utilized with the flick of a finger. With its 80% tint, the shaded visor allows you to enjoy day time riding without the need of sunglasses, and then when the sun goes down you just flip the visor back up and out of sight. Inside the helmet are removable cheek pads and a removable comfort liner, both of which can be washed and cleaned. For ease of use and secure fit, the helmet has a micro metric chin strap that clicks into place as you tighten it down and can be removed by simply pulling on the tab.
56
(Part# 261-3929-000-140-001, MSRP $199.99) The R1 Air Fresh Air helmet is available in either a Matte White or Matte Black finish in sizes S-XXL. For those that are very particular about how a helmet sits on their head, you can tailor fit the helmet with different size cheek pads and comfort liners that Klim offers. While the helmet does require the purchase of a third party fresh air system, there are several on the market from companies like PCI Race Radios and Parker Pumper. The R1 Air Fresh Air Helmet is a very affordable solution to a problem you’ve probably been overlooking.

GAIN CONTROL
INSTALLING A GPR STABILIZER
A
dventuring off-road on your dirt bike, whether it’s just for some casual trail riding or competing in something like a Hare Scramble or enduro race, can be a blast, however it does come with its risks. There are things like unexpected holes, rocks, branches, washboard roads, and other obstacles that can upset the steering and handling of your frontend and cause you to crash. The other downside is that a ton of frontend feedback can be extremely tiring and cause arm pump. Outfitting your bike with the proper components can vastly improve the handling and performance when it comes to off-roading. One aftermarket product you may want to consider is a GRP Steering Stabilizer. The GPR V4D uses fluid in the head to control frontend tension and then you can stiffen or loosen the feel via the dial on top. When resistance is increased you can feel it in the bars with a stiffer side-to-side movement. The resistance is felt from zero to 15 degrees left or right of the center pin and then it breaks free for normal frontend speed movement. This specific design helps reduce the turbulence, repetitive shaking, and jarring motions from off-roading and delivers a smoother ride and less fatigue on your body. The black dial on the stabilizer has eight adjustment indicators and each degree you turn the dial is a valving adjustment. Setting 1 offers the least low and high speed resistance, meaning the handlebars will feel somewhat like normal. The settings from 2-4 increases high speed resistance but does not affect low speed resistance, so hard/fast jolting impacts will be reduced, but lower speeds will feel normal. With settings 4-8 low speed (slow movement) and high speed resistance will increase with each click and both will max out at 8 giving you the heaviest feeling in the bars. The really nice feature about the adjuster is that it has a barrel valve so you can turn it as much as you want and it won’t pop off.

When we built our Baja Scrambler KTM 500 EXC-F a while back, we decided to install a GPR V4D Stabilizer (part#: UPP1502035, MSRP $534.99) because it was simple to install, easy to use, and offered a slim low profile design that could fit under the stock handlebars. Follow along as we show you how to install the GPR V4D on a 2016 KTM 500 EXC-F.
1 The GPR V4D Stabilizer comes with everything you need for installation. The kit includes: upper and lower bar mounts, the stabilizer, post mount with pin, hardware, and a low profile steering stem nut.
2 Before you get started secure the front wheel and lower triple clamp—you can use a tie down strap looped through the wheel and over the backbone or block of wood under the front tire. This will prevent the frontend from moving around or possibly falling when the top clamp is removed. Once the bike is secure remove the top bar clamps from the handlebars. You don’t need to completely remove the bars from the bike they can simply be placed between the LCD gauge and number plate.
Two Wheel Mania | 1800 841 2960 | www.ChapMoto.com
Two Wheel Mania | Issue 6 | July 2017
3 Next, remove the five bolts securing the top triple clamp. There are two bolts near the top of each fork leg and one at the steering stem.
6 With the top triple clamp loose you can now raise it above the number plate and remove the two bolts that secure gauge to the clamp.
7 4 You can now remove the steering stem nut.
Once the gauge is removed set the triple clamp off to the side and then remove the O-ring and dust cover from the head tube.
8 5 Next, wiggle the top triple clamp up and off the frontend. If you’re having trouble you can use a rubber mallet or a block of wood to tap the underside of the triple clamp.
Next, with the pinch bolt removed slide the post mount over the head tube, you can use a flat blade screwdriver to open up the post mount a little if necessary. Align the pin mount so that it is directly in-line with the backbone and then install the pinch bolt into the front side of the post mount (blue arrow) and secure it in place.

You can now re-install the dust cover and O-ring.
Using the supplied hardware (thicker shorter Allen cap bolts) and some thread locker, secure the one-piece, GPR lower handlebar mount to the top clamp. Torque to factory specs.
10 Bolt the LCD gauge back up to the front of the triple clamp and then reinstall the clamp onto the forks. Use a mallet or block of wood to gently tap the clamp back down in place. After the clamp is in place install and tighten the supplied steering stem nut to factory specs.
13 Install the pin into the post mount. The pin height can be adjusted. Set the stabilizer on top and make sure that the top of the pin sits flush with the top of the slot in the stabilizer arm. If the pin is too high or too low, adjust it accordingly. The pin can slide up or down within the press fit collar to achieve the correct height.
11 Next, tighten the stock pinch bolt on the backside of the clamp (blue arrow) and then you can remove the stock lower bar mounts. They will not be re-used so they can be set aside.
60
14 Once the pin height is correct, install the stabilizer onto the lower bar mount assembly using the supplied bolts and some thread locker.
Two Wheel Mania | 1800 841 2960 | www.ChapMoto.com
Two Wheel Mania | Issue 6 | July 2017
15 Next, mount the handlebars using the top bar mounts and fasteners that were included in the kit. Torque the bar mounts to factory specs.
16 Lastly, double check that all of the bolts on the top clamp, stabilizer, and handlebars are properly torqued and make sure the front end moves smoothly form side to side without binding up.
17 Installation is now complete. You can test the functionality of the stabilizer by taking a test run. GPR suggests riding on your favorite rocky road or whooped out trail and start out on 2 or 2.5. If the bars shake or deflect too easily turn the dial up one or two notches. Once it feels like there is a heavy weight on your front fender and it’s too hard to steer, dial the adjustment back a little. You will find that different terrain may call for a different settings.

Off The Line
2017 HONDA CRF250L RALLY
I
n a world filled with dreams of big adventures, it just might be a wee sized dual sport that could turn those hopes and desires into reality. Hot on the heels of Honda’s new big ADV bike, the CRF1000L Africa Twin, big red has dropped yet another steed into the on/off road motorcycle realm with the introduction of its CRF250L Rally. In its extremely short life-span, the Africa Twin has garnered plenty of attention and praise from the media and adventure bike fans. However, with nearly 100 horsepower, weighing more than 450 pounds, and a $13k-plus price tag, the large charger can be quite intimidating for many and more bike than most people want; which is exactly why Honda brought out the CRF250L Rally. While the CRF250L Rally is a completely new machine, you might look at it and see hints of familiarity, that’s because the bike is based on the CRF250L with key elements derived from team HRC’s CRF450 Rally they’ve raced in Dakar. You may also notice that some inspiration was pulled from the biggest of the CRF siblings, the 1000cc Africa Twin.
edition features the same frame and engine as the standard 250L. In fact, for 2017 Honda improved the performance of the standard 250L’s engine by increasing the throttle body from 36 to 38mm, redesigning the breathing system, creating a new muffler and larger head pipe, and adding a new brain (ECU) to control the EFI. The engine changes were done to increase low and mid-range power while also improving throttle response, all of which the Rally edition benefitted from as well. Transferring power from the engine to the rear wheel is a six speed transmission that makes for more relaxed long distance highway cruising. Speaking of highway cruising, the Rally features a larger fuel tank that holds 2.7 gallons as opposed to the 2.1 gallon capacity found on the standard
Lightweight, easy to maneuver, and extremely rider friendly, Honda designed the CRF250L Rally to inspire confidence in situations and terrain that beginner and even some more advanced riders may typically feel uncomfortable with. The Rally

250L. Braking performance has also been improved with a 40mm larger front rotor measuring 296mm. To better handle offroad situations the Rally sports more aggressive knobby tires as compared to the regular 250L. The Rally literally stands apart from its standard brother with more suspension travel, a longer wheel base, taller seat height, and more ground clearance. Bumps up front are tackled by a 43mm inverted front end that offers 11 inches of travel and a Pro-Link single shock with over spring that delivers 10.3 inches travel. A taller seat height might sound off putting to those of shorter stature or nervous beginners, however at 35.2 inches the 341 pound machine isn’t too overbearing to handle or manage in precarious situations. It is these changes to the stance however that make the Rally a more worthy tool for offroad excursions enabling the rider to climb and clear large obstacles more easily. Aesthetically, the Rally is strikingly different from the standard L model with a much more aerodynamic and sporty appearance thanks to
Features:
smooth flowing lines in the body work that borrows from both the HRC CRF450 Rally and the Africa Twin. Up front a compact floating windscreen/fairing is just tall enough to help block wind, rain, and road debris for most average size riders. Behind the screen is a pair of slightly offset LED headlights and direct above them is a digital info center. Below the windscreen sits a pair of radiator shrouds that flank the sharp beak of the front fender. Handguards offer protection for the rider’s hands up top while a skid plate mounted to the underside of the bottom of the frame helps keep rocks and other destructive objects from wreaking havoc on the engine. It might not be the most potent of the ADV/ dual sport crowd but with its $5,899 MSRP (an ABS model is also available for $6,199) and its go anywhere attitude, this mighty machine will help you live your wildest motorcycle dreams without giving you nightmares about your bank account.
LED Headlights
Disc Brakes
The asymmetrical headlights kind of give the bike a wonky personality up front but the LED headlights and turn signals offer bright illumination with low power consumption.
Up front the Rally is outfitted with a large, wave-design, 296mm front rotor and a 220mm rear disc brake provides strong and consistent stopping power outback. If you opt for the ABS model you have the ability to switch ABS off in the rear when desired.
Digital Info
Storage
Protected neatly behind the wind screen is a digital info center that provides the rider with details like rpm, speed, time of day, fuel gauge, and how many miles have been racked up.
A 2.66 gallon (including 0.42 gallon reserve) fuel tank helps deliver a range of more than 198 miles, while a small storage compartment on the left side provides a place to hideaway some tools to help with road side repairs.

Personal Profile Cup event. When asked what has drawn him to the ’80s bikes, Noah said he loves them because that was the first bike he learned to ride on and since that time he has always had an ’80s era two-stroke. He compared it to old guys and their love for muscle cars; he just loves the sight, sound, and smell of them.
GET TO KNOW A CHAP MOTO EMPLOYEE:
NOAH PERRY
Even though he’s only 25, you could say Noah Perry has an old soul—well at least you could say he has an affinity for old bikes. Working at Chaparral Motorsports and being as young as he is you’d think Noah would have the latest and greatest motorcycle (he does, a 2016 KTM 500 ECX-F) but he’s spent more time on bikes from the 1980s than anything else. He started riding at 11-years-old on a 1982 Yamaha YZ-60 and instantly fell in love with the world of moto. After learning the basics on the YZ 60, Noah burned through a cluster of bikes running the gamut from an XR-50 to YZ-85, KLX-110, YZ-125, and RMZ-250. Over the years Noah has covered miles and miles of trails all over the Inland Empire and has spent a considerable amount of time on various tracks. As he got older Noah began putting his motocross skills to the test against other riders competing in various races such as the Red Bull Day in the Dirt, and the California Vintage Motocross Series (CALVMX).
When not waxing nostalgic riding his 1986 CR 250 Noah can be found twisting the throttle of his KTM 500 EXC all throughout the Southern California high desert, San Bernardino Mountains, and beyond. Not one to leave his bikes in their stock form, Noah has spent countless hours tuning, tweaking, and modding his bikes all in an effort to make them run better, look better, and handle better. In fact, if you recall our Baja Brawler KTM 500 ECX-F we built last year, Noah replicated that bike almost to a T with his KTM. While he does love to do a lot of trail riding, Noah says his favorite MX track is Cahuilla Creek. But when he really wants to escape Noah rips on down to Mexico and shreds the sandy beaches and scrub brush of the Baja Peninsula, as he hops from taco stand to taco stand in search of senoritas and margaritas. Noah has been working at Chaparral for about six-and-half years and can be found helping customers in the OEM and Accessory Parts Department. It’s a rather perfect fit for him since he can live out his customization dreams through all the customers he helps and he can stay inspired with ideas for his own projects and bike builds. Speaking of bike builds, Noah says his current dream bike is a 2017 YZ 125. He’s hoping to get one in the near future because they are fun, lightweight and can do most anything while putting a smile on your face.
Actually, it’s the CALVMX series that has piqued Noah’s interest most as he can compete on his favorite two-wheeled machines, bikes from the ‘80s era. Falling into the Post Vintage category in the race series, Noah has competed on a 1980 Maico 440 and a 1988 CR-500. He was also one third of the Chaparral team that competed in last year’s Transworld Industry

Kids grow quick, so if you’ve got a little one that has outgrown their 50cc dirt bike and want to get them onto something they can enjoy without breaking the bank, Suzuki’s 85cc yellow jacket is a great choice. With smooth power delivery, a very balanced feel, and easy to manage weight, this two-stroke is great fun and a competitive little machine. If your rider gets finicky about the suspension you’ll be happy to know that front and rear is completely adjustable. The Showa 37mm front forks offer adjustable rebound damping with a 20-way compression adjustment and delivers 10.8 inches of travel. The Showa rear shock provides 10.9 inches of travel and you can fine tune the compression and rebound characteristics as well.
While the Kawi and Suzuki may stack up pretty evenly there are a few characteristics that separate the two. First of all, the Kawasaki is 4 pounds lighter and offers a nearly 1” shorter seat height which can equate to a more comfortable and more confident ride. The Kawasaki offers a lighter and lower center of gravity as well as a 1” shorter wheelbase. The Kawasaki is outfitted with a six-position adjustable handlebar mount to tailor fit the ergonomics for a wide range of riders. You can also dial in the front suspension via the 20-way compression damping adjustment. At the rear, the UniTrak single shock offers 24-way compression and 21-way rebound damping, plus it has adjustable spring preload to make sure the bike is setup perfectly for your little ripper.
For those serious about competing, the KTM 85 SX is a smart move. It has a steeper price tag, but there’s good reason. Light and nimble, high end components, and an easy-pull clutch with smooth shifting and power delivery are just a few ways in which the KTM stands out. The SX stays nice and light thanks to a chromoly steel frame and aluminum sub frame. The bike rolls on black powdercoated Excel wheels laced with black spokes with aluminum nipples and CNC-machined hubs. Suspension is provided by 43mm upside down WP forks with 10-1/2” of travel and offers rebound and compression adjustment. In the rear is an adjustable WP PDS mono shock. Your kid will appreciate the easy clutch pull and smooth power delivery thanks to the Formula hydraulic clutch.
