It might be the priciest of the three, but the Troy Lee Wheeled Gear Bag delivers in size, functionality, and features. The largest of the three bags, this bag sports a large microfleece lined side compartment to house your moto helmet and an even bigger boot compartment at the opposite end with large rubber mesh panels for ventilation. The main opening flap has three pockets, one of which is a fleece lined storage area to keep 3-4 pairs of goggles. The main storage area is very spacious with rigid sides. There are two zippered storage compartments inside, one of which is mesh to keep sweaty gear separated from fresh gear. Unlike the other two bags which have colored interior to help you find your items in low light conditions, this bag’s interior is all black. The bag comes with Velcro dividers in the main area to organize your gear, or you can completely remove them if desired.
One of the most annoying things about air travel is trying to identify your bag from everyone else’s in the luggage carrousel—that won’t be a problem with this bag. This bag features one large main storage compartment, has two mesh pockets under the lid, and two zippered pouches inside. If you carry a lot of goggles this bag is great because there’s a micro-fleece lined compartment with adjustable dividers to fit up to six pairs of goggles. The light grey interior can be zipped out for cleaning. While this bag doesn’t have separate helmet and boot compartments you can fit both into the main section along with riding pants, a couple jerseys and other gear. A very convenient feature is the 22”x 22” padded changing mat that you can lay next to the bag as you swap your boots for street shoes. Another unique feature that the other two bags don’t offer is the ability to add a customizable Velcro number plate (sold separately) to the exterior.
Massive in size, this bag features a plethora of compartments, but what we like most are the separate boot and helmet sections at either end. Both have small perforated areas to allow the sweaty gear to air out. The main closure is a U-shape and features two zippered pouches, one is full mesh, again good for breathability. Inside against the sidewalls are three more mesh elastic storage compartments. Storing boots and a helmet does eat into the center compartment; however, the bag is pretty deep and provides plenty of room to stack pants, a jersey and other gear in the main section. The bright blue interior makes it easier to find your gear. Outside there’s two zippered compartments to store smaller items. Other than the bottom the bag isn’t really reinforced, so it makes it rather floppy when not filled, but it also makes it much easier to compress into tight areas or store away when not in use. The long retractable handle and large, sturdy wheels make it easy to drag the bag through airports or from pit to pit.

The cruiser world has typically followed the old mantra “there’s no replacement for displacement,” however, as of late, midsize cruisers have been gaining popularity. The Kawasaki Vulcan might only pack 649cc’s in its parallel twin, but the motor is from Kawasaki’s fierce Ninja 650 line, so it’s nothing to sneeze at. Loaded with different cams to bring the power delivery into the lower rpms so that it’s more in line with what cruiser fans want, the Vulcan S offers solid and smooth power through all six gears (the gear box is also from the Ninja 650). What makes the Vulcan S such an approachable bike for riders of all sizes and experience levels is the Kawasaki Ergo Fit System. By visiting a dealership that is a participating Ergo Fit Center, buyers can tailor fit the Vulcan S to their liking with dealer-installed seat, handlebar, and footpeg options.

For those that want a nearly do-it-all motorcycle the KTM Enduro 690 R fits the bill quite nicely. The Enduro 690 delivers all the sporty offroad capabilities of other midweight dual sport bikes with the added benefit of highly confident highway travel. It may not be a comfy long distance machine like the 1190 Adventure or 1290 Super Adventure, but with its six-speed transmission and claimed 67hp it can get you down the road and to the next town at a steady and smooth pace. The 690 sports wildly more aggressive dirt bike inspired looks than the Honda XR650L and Suzuki 650S. And while it does come with a premium price tag you get a lot of bang and benefits for those bucks such as ABS, rideby-wire, switchable EFI maps, a slipper clutch, and adjustable suspension front and rear.

INTRODUCING
OCELOT ATV TIRES
T
he most important things keeping you from eating a mound of dirt when riding your ATV are your tires. They are also consumables, meaning that they wear with use and have to regularly be replaced. You want to get the best performance out of your ATV tires but the more you use your four wheeler, the more money you’ll be spending on tire replacement. Obviously this can get pretty costly. That’s where Chaparral Motorsports’ new line of ATV tires, Ocelot Tires, comes into play. New to the ATV tire market, Ocelot Tires offers great quality and even better value. While Ocelot Tires may be the new kid on the block, the Ocelot brand has been around since the ‘60s and was the first to bring value based, entry-level offroad riding gear for younger riders to the market back in the mid ‘80s. Also not new, is the manufacturer that makes the exclusive, private label Ocelot Tires. The manufacturer has been in the business for nearly 30 years, is one of the largest tire makers in China, and makes tires for some of the more notable brands in the industry. Most companies that sell tires to the public have to work through a supply chain that starts with the manufacturer, then the tires get shipped to a distributor, and then they’re shipped to the dealer/store. Chaparral has cut out the middle man and receives its Ocelot Tires
12
directly from the manufacturer. By reducing the number of links in the chain Chaparral is able to get its Ocelot Tires into the hands or onto the vehicles of its customers faster and at an extremely affordable price. Another benefit is timing; many enthusiasts are concerned with the code on the sidewall of tires indicating when they were manufactured, by getting their tires directly from the manufacturer Chaparral can offer tires that haven’t been sitting around in a warehouse and are therefore extremely “fresh.” Knowing that ATV riders preferences of terrain are as varied as the machines they ride, Ocelot Tires can be found in a variety of styles from mild to extremely aggressive tread patterns. There are more than 20 different tires models to choose from with the line covering a gamut of sizes from 6” (4-ply) for the smaller 50- and 90cc displacement ATVs to 12” (6-ply) for the heavier 800cc quads and some lightweight UTV applications. Serving as a cost effective solution to the higher prices of the major brands, Ocelot Tires are right in line in regards to quality, style, and performance when compared to some of the most popular ATV tire models. Below is just a small sampling of some the tires available in the Ocelot line.

P350 With its rugged tread pattern and thick lugs the P350 ($115.99, part# 748-P350-0035) is a great alternative to the Maxxis Big Horn. A 6-ply, nondirectional tire, large shoulder lugs are incorporated to help protect the rim and sidewall from punctures and to deliver superb durability. Ideal for utility use the 20mm tread depth and lug pattern ensure top notch handling and traction.
P341 For those that are fans of the Kenda Bearclaw, the Ocelot P341 ($72.99, part# 748-P341-0005) may look rather familiar. Available in 10 sizes ranging from 25x12-10 to 25x10-12, this 6-ply tire features a prominent V-shaped tread design with up to 20mm of tread depth. The V design offers plenty of spacing between the lugs to promote cleaning and to prevent rocks and debris from lodging in the tires.
P373 Another option for the Bearclaw is Ocelot’s P373 ($81.99, part# 748-P373-0010). Similar to the P341 this tire has a V-shaped tread pattern. With slightly shorter lugs (15.2mm tread depth) this tire is a little lighter to offer quicker acceleration and better braking performance. A perfect replacement for your O.E.M. tires, you’ll get a smooth ride in both soft and hard pack terrain as well as good traction in mud or rocky situations.
P357 Are you into GNCC racing or like to spend a lot of time cruising open terrain? With its flat profile the P357 ($70.99, part# 748-P357-0010) is very similar to both the ITP Holeshot and Maxxis Razr. The P357 is a non-directional, 4-ply tire, and is available in sizes ranging from 22x11-9 to 22x10-10. As quad sport tire it features a very dynamic tread pattern that provides exceptional traction via its split knob design and 18mm tread depth. The flat and broad design of the tread pattern increases the footprint, reduces slipping, and aids in tight and precise turns.

start out lighter than the competition. The YZ had already shed a couple pounds with the addition of the titanium exhaust but to cut even more weight a set of Raptor titanium footpegs from Pro Circuit were utilized. Besides being much lighter than stock, the titanium pegs are much stronger and significantly improve traction with their extremely sharp teeth and wider platforms. Caked on mud and debris can weigh a bike down, so to keep the underside clean a Lightspeed Glide plate was installed. Crafted from carbon fiber, not only is the skid plate ultralight but it provides protection to the water pump and ignition side case. The last pieces added to this YZ puzzle were a set of white Acerbis Lower Fork Covers, blue radiator shrouds, Factory Effex KYB Upper Fork Shields, a Cycra Stadium Number Plate, and a Factory Effex FP1 Seat Cover. What really helped tie in the tribute aspect of this build however was the Factory Effex Yamaha/Chaparral Chad Reed Team replica graphics kit. It didn’t take long for this tribute bike to find a new home. In fact, Chaparral posted a picture on its Instagram page half way through the build and a fan immediately drove down to the dealership and placed a deposit on the bike. So if you see a YZ 450F dressed like Chad Reed’s race bike you may want to take a closer look, it could be the clone, or it just might be Speedy Reedy himself.

Flannel Flashback Speed and Strength have brought the 90s back in a big way with their Rust and Redemption Armored Shirt ($119.95, part# 387-8938). Made from a cotton poly blend, this plaid flannel shirt isn’t just a nod to the grunge look, it’s actually built specifically for motorcycling. You’ll find removable Vault, C.E. approved armor in the shoulders, elbows, and spine. Additional impact protection is incorporated in the shoulders and elbows which have been reinforced with DuPont Kevlar Fiber Thread. To keep the shirt from flapping around at speed there’s a heavy-duty YKK main zipper along with a snap down collar. To retain the button up design of the traditional flannel look there’s a snap panel to cover the main zipper.
Back in Black If busy plaid isn’t your thing but you’re still a fan of the shirt versus jacket look then Speed and Strength’s all black, Last Man Standing Armored Shirt ($129.95, part# 387-0156) should fall right into your wheel house. The Last Man Standing has all the same features as the Rust and Redemption shirt but instead of flannel is comprised of a cotton poly blend that’s like a soft denim-like material. Aside from the armor and reinforced elbows and shoulders, the Last Man Standing and Rust and Redemption both have snap-down chest pockets and large hole, mesh liners that make it easy to slip the shirts on and off while also allowing for ventilation.
Little Miss Riding Hood Hooded jackets have become very popular as of late and Speed and Strength serves up a sweet setup for female riders with its Fast Times Hooded Denim Textile Jacket ($149.95, part#387-1167). A mix between a hooded sweat shirt and denim jacket the combo looks casual but provides plenty of two-wheeled safety with removable C.E. armor in the elbow, shoulders, and spine protector. Subtle reflective trim helps riders stay visible to others on the road during night rides and a lock down, adjustable waist adjuster allows for a tailored fit. The jacket also features belt loop snaps to help keep everything in its place when in a tucked riding position while a zipper main section will keep the jacket securely closed. The jacket is available in either black, brown, or blue denim with light grey, white, or dark grey hoodies sewn in.

Buyer’s Guide Keep the Fleece Even though Alpinestars’ Northshore Tech Fleece Jacket ($219.95, part# 3604.0106.1.4) is a motorcycle jacket, it looks like you could have just as easily walked off the golf course. Actually it would probably be a rather comfortable jacket for the casual duffer with its soft outer shell, windbreaker membrane, and fleece lining. The windbreaker is laminated between the two outer materials making for a relaxed and comfortable fit. The elbows and shoulders have polyethylene foam that can be removed and upgraded with Alpinestars’ Bio-Armor. This jacket is tailored for riding with a longer tail and shock cord waist adjustment, and multiple zippered pockets. If the hood annoys you at speed it can be unzipped and removed.
Your New Favorite Everyone seems to have a favorite sweatshirt that they always wear. Well, after spending a day or two in Speed and Strength’s United by Speed Armored Hoody ($119.95, part# 387-8911) you’ll be in love. Soft, flexible, and extremely comfortable this riding sweatshirt will feel like second skin—with the benefit of heavy-duty armor. It looks like a standard hoody but is made from a cotton poly blend so it’s a bit stronger than your average sweatshirt. Outfitted with removable, C.E. approved, shoulder, elbow and spine protectors this hoody is unlike any other riding jacket you’ve ever owned. The hand warmer style pockets feature zippers to keep your possession in place and thumb cuffs at the sleeve ends keep the sleeves from sliding up when at speed. This piece of riding gear is best for use on those spring days when it’s a little cooler in the morning but you also want high flow ventilation for warmer afternoon riding.
Dinner Date The Cassidy Textile Jacket ($320.00, part# 594-0801-0226-0052) from Roland Sands Design (RSD) features such clean and formal lines you could throw on for a dinner date or a night out at the club and most people would never suspect it’s actually a motorcycle jacket. Comprised of a water-repellant, breathable, heavy canvas, cotton chassis this jacket has armor ready padding in the key areas. Designed for comfort when on the bike the jacket has rotated, pre-curved sleeves, a slightly extended tail, a snap down collar, and leather flex gussets in the underarm area for easy movement. The Cassidy is loaded with zippered exterior and interior pockets and is available in either black or brown.

Do Work
If you’ve been paying attention to what the younger riders are wearing you may have noticed more and more people with work boots on their feet as opposed to motorcycle boots. If you like the work book look but want technical features and better protection than the standard work boot then check out the Super Duty 4 Boots ($140.00, part# 038-3403-0173) from Icon. Shorter than the standard motorcycle boots, the SD4s are a 3/4 design that come up just above your ankle. This provides some ankle stability without being too constricting. Additional ankle protection is offered by padded inserts. For secure fitment the boots feature a lace up design with a single ratcheting buckle over the top of the foot. An axial steel shank offers a solid footbed while slip resistant soles will keep your feet planted on oily surfaces. If you don’t like tan (wheat), the boots are also available in black or brown.
High Tops for Her Don’t worry ladies we’ve got some footwear for you as well. Seen here are Alpinestars’ Stella Josey Waterproof Women’s Riding Shoes ($179.95, part# 020-3405-1263). Available in grey/pink these riding shoes are loaded with comfort features such as reinforced poly-foam padding on the tongue and ankle, and a footbed that’s been anatomically engineered out of PU (Polyurethane) foam to specifically fit the form of a woman’s foot. As for protection the internal toe box and heel counter have been reinforced to offer strategic support and impact performance, there’s also dual density ankle protectors on the lateral and medial sides. To protect against the elements the outer has been wax treated and the inside has a waterproof membrane lining to keep feet dry.
Lady Leggins Finding the right pair of women’s riding jeans that look good, are a comfortable fit, and can be worn on a dinner date or to a casual work environment can be really tough. The Kira X Riding Jeans from Motto Wear ($145.95, part# 960-1041) offer all of the above benefits plus more. Made from a light, stretchy denim, the pants are designed for a women’s figure with a comfortable yet form fitting look. While these pants do feature a stylish low-waist cut, they have a stretchy cotton pull out that can be used when riding to keep your higher waist warm and help maintain your modesty. Besides an easy fit, the pants provide plenty of protection as they are lined with soft Dupont Kevlar in the hips, backside, thigh and knee area and also feature removable / adjustable high-tech SAS-TEC CE knee protectors. For all out safety the pants can be outfitted with Knox hip protectors. The boot cut legs offer a stretch fit to easily fit inside or over riding boots. Visit ChapMoto.com for more great gear

OAKLEY OAKLEY PRIZM MX LENSES
A
side from a motocross helmet, goggles—more specifically the lenses—are one of the most important pieces of protective gear a rider can use. Initially goggles were meant to protect the eyes from roost and other debris embedding in the eyes or disrupting vision. So obviously protecting rider’s vision came first and performance was secondary. Eventually tinted lenses, tear-offs, and roll-offs, came along to improve rider’s visibility, but now Oakley wants to help give mx riders a leg up on the competition with its new Prizm MX Lenses. Oakley’s Prizm lenses provide precise color filtering to key in on the varying light conditions and transitions in terrain such as bumps and surface textures. In a nutshell, the color filtering technology incorporated into the lenses boosts the good colors while reducing the bad colors. The Prizm lens provides a much greater contrast allowing riders to quickly and more easily spot changes in terrain types, avoid obstacles or potential hazards, and better identify the edges and depth of ruts, all in the name of finding the best and fastest lines. Oakley studied the human eye to identify colors and how lighting and changes in lighting effects colors and the way we see them. They were able to identify good light and bad light and they wanted to be able to boost good light while knocking down or reducing bad light in varying conditions. In its research and design process Oakley used a hyperspectral camera to observe specific lighting conditions and terrain in order to measure the entire light spectrum. They repeatedly captured various scenery and lighting conditions to record the light spectrum across a variety of settings. With this information they were able to see spectral peaks and patterns and

began working on filtering the peaks. Oakley found dyes (absorbers) that could be narrowed to the specific peaks in the spectral profiles they were working off of and could provide color filtering with emphasis on those narrow peaks rather than absorb broad arches of light like standard dyes typically would do. Oakley also collaborated with a range of athletes to identify what’s important to them when it comes to vision, lighting, and identifying objects or terrain. From there they were able to create a lens that boosts shadows, provides vivid color perception, and makes it so that the terrain “pops,” resulting in enhanced visual acuity and detail perception across a wide range of lighting conditions. Because of the dyes used, the lenses can only be constructed through injection molding, therefore Oakley makes them out of plutonite (their

proprietary polycarbonate material). The lenses are only available for the Airbrake and Mayhem pro goggles. Currently Oakley offers the Prizm MX lenses in Jade Iridium, Black Iridium, and Bronze. Each color is designed to work best in specific conditions/terrain. The Black Iridium is for extremely bright days and sandy desert conditions. This lens separates the foreground and background and helps you navigate through featureless terrain. The Jade Iridium is for partially sunny days or trail riding where you will be going in and out of trees and shadows. This lens separates browns and greens and greatly accommodates for transitioning from low light tree coverage to exposed sun. The Bronze is for low light and track days, and helps identify ruts, boosts varying terrain types and conditions while providing better depth perception of ruts.

creek beds or bee-bopping up and over rocky washes. Smooth shifting, smooth power, and smooth handling makes the 500 EXC a great bike for commuting, errand running, or just taking a weekend cruise to grab lunch. But where the bike really excels is when you let it loose in its more natural offroading environment. Weighing in around 261 pounds, extremely agile, and with more than 13 inches of ground clearance, the 500 EXC can handle tricky single track switchbacks or flat out, wide open desert runs with ease. And while it’s a great offroad machine, as with most vehicles, there’s always room for
to create a bike that would make a great pre-running machine for events like the Baja 1000. The main goals were to added some much needed protection, increase fuel capacity/mileage, and make a few key improvements to the drivetrain. The stock EXC comes with blacked out Giant rims and Metzeler tires, and even though the Metzelers are good tires the decision was made to swap them out with a set of tires that would provide better mileage and durability for harder pack and desert racing conditions. The perfect
choice for the job was a set of Tractionator Desert H/T

treacherous conditions associated with hard pack desert racing. Most notably, Motoz claims these tires have been run in the Baja 1000 without needing a tire change. In addition to the Motoz tires the stock tubes were ditched and replaced with a set of Bridgestone Ultra Heavy Duty tubes. To help improve braking, the original 260mm front rotor was replaced with one of Galfer’s 270mm Oversize Tsunami Wave Rotor Kits. The larger rotor provides better heat dissipation while the ceramic composite pads that come with the kit improve brake feel and performance. The floating design of the rotor also allows for better pad

Therefore to make tire repairs a faster affair, a pair of Enduro Engineering Axle Pulls were installed. The CNC-machined billet aluminum pulls will make it much easier to remove the axles when pulling the wheels off the bike. The 500 EXC drivetrain delivers great power, however the stock 15/45 gearing leaves quite a bit to be desired. Handguards were bolted up to offer a bit of protection for the rider’s hands. Running across unpredictable desert terrain at high speeds can get the front of your bike into some hairy situations like tank slappers, high-speed wobbles, and hard back and forth sweeps of the handlebars over rugged trails. To combat these situations a GPR V4 Stabilizer was installed. With its easy to use adjustable dial and fluid control the stabilizer helps dampen side-to-side jostling of the handlebar, resulting in a more stable and steady ride while also helping reduce arm pump. As for the footing on the bike, instead of going with the standard hard-mount footpegs that only swivel up and back, a set of Pivot Pegz were installed. Made from high-strength, aerospace-grade stainless steel, the pegs provide great grip and offer an extremely wide 60mm platform to help with control and reduce fatigue in the riders feet. The pegs are unique in the fact that they rotate forward and back with the rider’s feet to provide full time traction, better

A
n uncomfortable motorcycle seat can really put a damper on a long ride and result in issues such as pain, hot spots/pointers, being too wide or narrow so that you don’t fit on the bike comfortably, or being so slippery that you’re constantly readjusting. While most stock seats do a decent job serving the average rider, there’s always room for improvement. The stock seat on our Baja
Brawler KTM 500EXC project bike wasn’t horrible but we knew there were better aftermarket options available, so we deiced to upgrade with a Seat Concepts DIY Seat Cover Kit. For our KTM we chose to go with the Carbon Fiber Gripper Series with orange stitching ($159.99, part# KT0171-11). The kit comes with a new seat cover that has carbon fiber style vinyl sides and

a grippy, textured top panel that features ribbing at the front. In addition to the seat cover there’s also a new foam piece to replace the stock unit. The foam is proprietary to Seat Concepts and has a memory foam-like feel to it. It’s also denser than stock to provide plenty of cushion without being too hard or too soft—“just right,” as Goldilocks would say. Follow along as we show you how easy the kit is to install.

Buyer’s Guide
STORAGE WARS There’s a lot you can do with a sport oriented side-by-side: rip dunes, trail hop, rock crawl, mud bog, or just load up the family in the four-seater and go for an afternoon putt. One thing these vehicles aren’t really known for however is having a copious amount of on-board storage. Whether it’s
the Can-Am Maverick, Polaris RZR, or Yamaha YXZ, you might find a small center console with a couple cup holders, a cubby or two, and a small glove compartment but that’s about it. These vehicles aren’t intended to haul around a ton of stuff,
but a few extra pockets here and there would be great; thankfully there are plenty of storage solutions that can easily be installed/fitted to your ride and provide convenience and peace of mind. Below is a few of our favorite bags and storage options for UTVs.
Knee Saver You may be familiar with PRP Seats and their high-quality UTV seats, but did you know the company also has as line of storage bags as well? One of their most popular bags is the Front RZR Stock Door Bag with Knee Pad ($65.00, part# 098-E36-X). As the name implies it fits the stock half doors found on the twoand four-seater RZRs XP1000, 900XC, and S 900 models. The bags are made from durable vinyl coated polyester with a carbon fiber pattern exterior. With their angular shape the bags fit perfectly on the inside of the stock door frame and mount in place using the stock bolts that secure the door skins to the frame and a strip of Velcro. You can use these bags with the stock half door skins or the full-length door skins. The zippered 42
pocket keeps all your items secure and the padded portion sits in the perfect spot to protect your knee from banging against the door. The bags are available with blue, red, white, black, orange, or yellow piping. If you own a 4-seater PRP offers Passenger Door Bags ($65.00, part# 098-E40-X) that also come with a knee pad. The front and rear bags are available in left or right side and are sold separately. PRP makes door bags to fit other RZR models and certain Arctic Cat models as well. Two Wheel Mania | Issue 5 | September 2016
A lot of people add aftermarket doors to their RZRs and to accommodate those people there’s the RZR Universal Door Bag ($55.00, part# 098-E31) from PRP. Made from the same materials as the other door bags, these bags offer a much larger storage capacity than the Stock Door bags and feature a smaller pocket on the inside for your keys, wallet or cell phone. They come with adjustable straps that have grommets mounted in the ends so that you can tailor them to fit the inside of your door frame. Once you determine where the straps will route to they are secured in place with the door skin bolts. While there’s no dedicated knee pad, there is a thin layer of padding backing the carbon fiber front. If you’ve installed the PRP RZR Doors you can pick up the Door Bag with Knee Pad for PRP Doors ($85.00, part# 098-E38-X). 1000 models. The bags are made from top quality UV treated, water resistant Tri-Max® Ballistic Nylon with Fibertech accents, and feature reverse coil, oversized, rubber coated zippers. The bags are quick and easy to mount/dismount via the attached Velcro straps and Velcro strip secured to the backside. What many people will appreciate about these bags is that unlike the PRP bags, these are sold in sets, making them much more budget friendly.
Leave your baggage at the door Nelson Rigg has recently entered the UTV storage market with its Rigg Gear Adventure line of products and they too have door bags for the RZRs. They offer Upper Front Door Bags ( $99.95, part# 204-RG-001), Upper Rear Door Bags ($89.95, part# 204-RG-002), and Lower Door Bags ($89.95, 204-rg-001L) to fit a variety of RZR 900 and XP
The Upper Front Door Bags measure: 23 1/2” L x 11” W x 2” D and hold three liters per side. The Upper Rear Door Bags measure: 20 1/2” L x 11” W x 2”D and also hold 3 liters per side. If you’ve got the Polaris Lower Door Inserts installed on your RZR then you’ll definitely want to pick up the Lower Door Bags. The nice thing about these bags is that they can mount to either the front or rear door lowers. They measure 24” L x 9” W x 2.5”D and are very spacious with 7 liters of storage per side.
All Rigged up Another great piece of luggage from the Rigg Gear Adventure series is the Rear Cargo Storage Bag ($129.95, part# 204-RG-004). Made from the same materials as the door bags, this bag is designed to fit in most RZR cargo beds and measures 41 1/2”L x 8”W x 20”H. There are four zippered storage areas, one on each side and two in the center. The center/main area provides 58 liters of storage and features a flip down shelf to create two individual sections (upper and lower storage compartments) to keep your gear separated if needed. The bag can be secured to the rear of the roll cage or the cargo bed via the adjustable straps and various D-rings. As with the other Rigg Gear this bag comes with a lifetime warranty. Buyer’s Guide Lock it up If you want to get serious about storage for your RZR and want something extremely rugged then you may want to opt for Polaris’ Lock and Ride Cargo Box ($249.99, part# 2876439-070). The box is made from injection-molded, UV resistant, polyethylene and has a storage capacity of 65 liters. Basically this piece is like adding a trunk to your RZR. The box features weatherproofing under the lid to keep all your gear dry and you can use a pad lock to help keep your items safe from nefarious hands. The Lock and Ride Cargo Box fits in most RZR cargo beds and even though it takes up the entire bed space, the unit can quickly and easily be removed/installed.
Pack it in Rotopax is well known in the offroad industry for its various fluid containers and mounting systems. Many people don’t realize aside from fuel storage, Rotopax also offer dry storage options like its 2-gallon Storage Pack ($84.95, part# 049451-2112S). The heavy-duty plastic container measures 17 3/4” L x 13 1/4” W x 3” H and with its clam shell design and

secure hinges you can carry quite a bit of gear. Convenient carry handles make it easy to carry the storage pack to and from your UTV and with the unique molded design you can stack multiple Rotopax on top of one another. Rotopax offers a variety of mounting accessories giving you several options when it comes to securing the pack to your UTV.
Visit ChapMoto.com for a complete list of UTV essentials to keep you safe and running on your next offroad adventure!
Big can on campus Cam Can is a rather new product on the market and similar to the Rotopax. Cam Can offers a mix between liquid and dry storage containers that can be mounted a variety of ways. The Trail Box is ideal for tow ropes/straps, tools, spare parts, first aid necessities, or just about anything else you can cram into the 463ci/2-gallon container. Depending on the mount system you purchase the Cam Cans can be mounted to the roll cage or spare tire and you can stack and lock up to two Cam Cans together.

Don’t let it go to waste Make use of the wasted space in the rear corners of your stock RZR XP1000 roll cage with the Polaris Side Bag ($129.99 each, part# 2879518). The bag mounts to the interior rear of the cab frame with Polaris’ Lock and Ride technology and four Velcro straps. Zippers on each side of the bag allows for it to be mounted on either the left or right side of the vehicle. On the inside is a zippered interior pocket to keep smaller items secure and elastic straps to hold a few tools.
A dry bag is a great solution if you want a simple storage solution that can be tossed into the back of your UTV and quickly secured. Firstgear recently came out with a line of dry pak duffle bags in various sizes that could come in very handy in a pinch. There’s the Firstgear Torrent 25 Liter Waterproof Duffle Bag ($59.95, part# 310-7279), Torrent 40 Liter Waterproof Duffle Bag (79.95, part# 310-7280), and Torrent 70 Liter Waterproof Duffle Bag ($89.95, part# 310-7281). The bags are constructed out of extremely durable PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) tarpaulin fabrics that have been precision cut and sonically welded to ensure optimal seam integrity, strength, and durability for the rigors of offroading. There are D-rings and webbing straps scattered throughout the bags that make it easy to secure the bags to the bed or passenger areas of your UTV.
Keep your cool AO Coolers offers a great selection of ice chests that can be tossed into the back of a side-by-side. The nice thing about these coolers is that even the largest one, the 48 Pack, still leaves plenty of room in the bed of your UTV to carry other items. The soft-sided coolers are great for taking with you on offroad excursions or camping trips because when you’re done using them, they can be compressed and packed away. AO Coolers are available in a variety of sizes: 12 pack, 24 pack, 36 pack, and 48 pack in an assortment of colors (royal blue, silver, black, and camo, carbon silver and carbon black). AO Coolers states that these ice chests have twice the insulation as standard soft-sided coolers and hold ice for 24 hours in 120-degree heat. The bags have removable shoulder straps and have clip down ends for securing the coolers in place. Besides the main cooler compartment the bags also have a zippered side pocket to store things like keys, wallet, and other items. The 48 Pack AO Cooler ($89.95, part# 272-0048-B) measures 21” L x 13” W x 13” H and can store 48 cans along with 1520 pounds of ice.
Offroad and chill If it’s frosty trailside beverages you seek then look no further than the 30 quart Polaris Northstar Cooler ($279.99, part# 2881315) The cooler measures 18.3”L x 17.3” W x 24.4” H, is made from UV resistant polyethylene, and features 2” thick insulation to keep your food and beverages cold for hours on end. Sturdy rubber latches and aluminum hinges ensure the lid stays sealed, molded tie-down points make it easy to safely transport the cooler in the cargo bed of your UTV, and easy grip handles enable you to lift and carry the cooler from place to place.

Personal Profile In 1982 Bill made the jump to the west coast where he continued to race (he hung up his racing leathers in 1987) and got his first job in the motorcycle industry as a manager of a motorcycle shop in Santa Ana. For the past 35 years Bill has been pursuing his two wheeled passion and getting paid for it. When he’s not giving out tire advice at Chaparral or making sure the helmet department is stocked with the latest lids, Bill can be found cruising the various southern California mountain roads, hanging with his son Patrick, watching a Yankees or NY Giants game, or working on his yard.

For more than four years the New York native has been heading up the Chaparral tire department. And as we well all know, no matter if it’s two wheels, three wheels, or four, off road, desert, trail, or street, at some point you’re going to need new tires and Bill is your man. Recently, Bill has taken on even more responsibility splitting his time as the brand manager for the tire, helmet, street apparel, and boot departments. Bill’s extensive product knowledge of just about all things motorcycles is accredited to his decades of experience working in the industry and his 40plus years as an avid motorcycle enthusiast.
Bill and his son Patrick this past July at Laguna Seca for the World Superbike Championships. Bill says some of his best memories aboard a motorcycle have been riding through upstate New York, the Catskills, and a trip he made from Pennsylvania to Morganton, North Carolina along the Blue Ridge Parkway. While Bill has owned more than 15 motorcycles over the years covering the gamut from his first bike which was a Yamaha RD350 to a 750 Bonneville Triumph, to his current ride, a 2001 Honda ST1100, he says his favorite bike is his old Suzuki GS1000S—he wishes he never sold it. Next time you’re in the Chaparral Motorsports tire department and your hear a thick New Yawk accent boast out “Fuhgetaboutit,” don’t worry, you haven’t been magically transported into a Bronx pizzeria. The thrill of speed and friendly competition drew Bill to his first motorcycle race in 1976, a run-whatcha-brung type of event at Pocono Raceway. While he wasn’t allowed to race because he didn’t have the proper safety equipment, Bill was determined to test his mettle and quickly purchased the necessary gear. He spent the next six years racing all along the east coast on a 1977 Yamaha RD400, 1970 Honda CB750, and a limited production 1979 Suzuki GS1000. Bill and his buddies were more into distance riding as opposed to short circuit or sprints, and regularly competed in four-, six-, and eighthour endurance races.

EVERY DAY CARRY HI-VIZ GEAR FOR THE NIGHT RIDER M
otorcycle riding is a great activity and extremely affordable method of transportation; however, it’s not
without its dangers—most notably not being seen by other motorists. Motorcycles are much smaller than most other vehicles on the road and therefore can easily get lost amongst a sea of other cars and trucks
on the road or inattentive drivers. Riding at night exacerbates the situation, but throwing on some hi-viz motorcycle gear can make a world of difference in helping others on the road spot you. Below are some items we’ve picked out to help you stand out. One or two items can help you be seen, but going hi-viz head-to-toe will make you glow.

PUSH IT FORWARD///// DR. D YZ450 ENGINE RELOCATION KIT
A
fter a complete makeover for the 2014 model, you would think Yamaha’s YZ450F couldn’t get much better, but in 2015 Yamaha backed up the all new model with even more improvements to help handling and performance. For the 2016 model year Yamaha made a few more minor refinements and as it sits in its stock form the ’16 YZ450F is a great bike, but there are some out there that say the frontend can feel a little too light or even loose in the corners. This topic came up with the earlier YZ450F model as well, so Doug Dubach of Dubach Racing (aka Dr. D) went to work to find a way to help combat the issue and improve rider’s confidence and frontend feel when charging corners. 48
The solution Dr. D came up with was an engine relocation kit that moves the engine slightly forward by using two offset engine collars. With the engine moved forward it puts more weight towards the front of the bike resulting in a heavier/ better frontend feel. Currently Dr. D has two kits for the YZ450F, one that fits the ’10-13 models and another that fits ‘14-16 models. The earlier model kit comes with the two collars, new lower engine mounts, and an exhaust spacer. The late model Dr. D Engine Relocation kit ($79.95, part# DRD-3101) only requires the two offset collars. Follow along as we show you how to install this kit on a brand new 2016 YZ450F.

MAKE IT EASY
To make things a bit easier you can use some blocks of wood to support the rear wheel/swingarm. Next, remove the bolt that connects the swingarm and linkage assembly (red arrow). Then remove the bolt that connects the linkage to the lower shock mount (yellow arrow). The chain can be removed at this time as well as the rear wheel, or you can leave the rear wheel in place to provide additional support.
1
THE ORIGINALS
Here are the offset collars that come with the late model kit. The machined offset incorporated into the collars moves the engine forward 1.5mm and while that might not sound like a lot, pushing the weight of the engine forward that tiny bit can definitely be felt at the frontend, keeping the wheel planted and improving traction. The outside of the collars have index marks cut into them to help with proper alignment during installation.

To get started remove the seat right side number plate and muffler. Next remove the rear brake lever followed by the master cylinder. The master cylinder is mounted to the rear right side of the frame by two button head bolts. Since you’ll be removing the swingarm, use a zip tie or duct tape to secure the master cylinder to the swingarm so it’s not hanging by the brake line or flopping around.

PUNCH IT
Next use a punch to lightly tap the end of pivot shaft.

Once the right side of the shaft is out far enough, grab and pull, you may need to wiggle or twist the swingarm a bit to make it easier for the shaft to slide out.
BEAT THE BIND
To prevent the collar from binding, reposition the punch to the opposite side of the collar lip and repeat. Continue until you can pull the collar out by hand or it falls out of the case. Repeat the process to remove the opposite collar.

POP THAT COLLAR
The next step is to remove the stock collars from the back side of the engine case (where the pivot shaft slides through). In order to do this you’re going to need a punch

THE DOUBLE TAP
Working on the right side of the bike line up one of the collars to seat it into position. When aligning the collar make sure the thinner edge is towards the back of the engine case and the top cross mark is aligned vertically. Then gently tap the collar in place working side to side and top to bottom so it seats evenly. Tap on the outside edge of the collar face so you don’t accidentally mar the inside edge and make it difficult to slide the pivot shaft into place.
13
GET LOOSE
Next, the bolts securing the upper engine mounts need to be loosened but not removed. There are three bolts on each side.
16
LIFT & ALIGN
Before installing the left collar you need to install the pivot shaft, this will help you get both collars aligned and clocked together. Once the pivot shaft is in place slide

This has become extremely evident with how quickly the Honda Grom has acquired a cult like following with its own social media fan pages, riding clubs, meet up/events, and racing circuits. But like most anything that has wheels and a motor, the most fun someone can have with Honda’s 125cc mini machine is to customize it. With a rolling weight of 225 pounds and MSRP of just over $3K, the Grom is lightweight and light on the pocket, making it ideal for entry level riders as well as skilled veterans. The best thing about the Grom is that with its MSRP being so easy on the pocket book it leaves plenty of

its Mod Department, and as the machines were getting cleaned up for the sales floor the decision was made to throw some parts and accessories at the superlites. Not wanting to go overboard with wild customizations, the team chose to give the mini machine some mini mods. By just doing some light customization to each bike it would help make them stand apart from other motorcycles on the sales floor and would leave plenty of room for the new owners to add their own mix of parts and accessories. As the head wrench in the ChapMoto Mod department, John Hayward took to the task of giving each bike a slight facelift. He started with a trio of stock 2015 Groms, two yellows and a metallic black version and set out to give each bike its own personality.

Product Spotlight
TROY LEE DESIGNS
SE4 HELMET Y
ou don’t have to be a sports fan to know that chronic traumatic encephalopathy, more commonly known as CTE, has been a huge topic of discussion over the past couple of years. The Concussion Foundation defines CTE as is a progressive degenerative disease of the brain found in athletes, military veterans, and others with a history of repetitive brain trauma. Most commonly you’ll hear the term in reference to NFL players and boxers regarding the repetitive hits to the head and multiple concussions many experience during their career. Symptoms of CTE can come on early or years later and can result in memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, impulse control, aggression, depression, and even dementia.
Just like football, motocross racing is an activity in which there is the possibility of head trauma from the rider striking their head on the handlebars, riding into another rider, or hitting the ground. Most racers spend several years if not a decade or more competing, so the possibility of multiple instances of head trauma or concussions becomes more likely. And just like NFL players, the most important part of the gear they wear is the helmet. As the discussion about CTE continues to evolve, so do the efforts to create better head protection. One company that has put motocross racers head protection and overall health at the forefront of their product line is Troy Lee Designs with its brand new SE4 Motocross helmet. TLD spent more than 3,800 hours in
development and made 350 prototype crash helmets to create the SE4, all in the name of rider safety. With the tag line “Your safety is my priority,” Troy Lee and the TLD team set out to identify high impact areas and then repetitively conducted multiple impact tests at various heights and speeds. With each test they continued to refine and improve the SE4 concept until they had a product that not only exceeded certifications for Snell, DOT, ECE and AS/NZS 1698, but also beat out its competition. Two of the main safety features of the SE4 are increased Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) in key areas and the use of

the Multi-directional Impact Protection System (MIPS). EPS has a wide variety of uses and is the same material that’s used to make those ice chests you pick up at the gas station or those annoying peanuts that fall all over your floor when you open a package. Lightweight and great at absorbing impact energy without bounceback, EPS liners have been used in motorcycle helmets for years. With the majority of impacts occurring in the headband area TLD sought to reduce the force by increasing the amount of EPS in the frontal headband area. They also added more EPS to the top and rear parietal zones. Besides the skull, the brain’s other defense system is Cerebrospinal fluid, which in the simplest explanation, acts like a liquid shock absorber to protect the brain from impacting the skull. When hitting an object with your head it’s the sudden stop or rotation of the head upon impact with a force so strong that the cerebrospinal fluid can’t protect the brain from hitting the skull that can cause the most harm. While relatively new technology (in motorcycle helmet standards) the MIPS system was created by a group of neurosurgeons and scientists with a focus on the biomechanical field at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. Acting as a low friction layer between the outer shell and the liner (EPS in this case)
the MIPS system reduces rotational forces set upon the brain when subjected to angled impacts. With its elastomeric attachment system, the MIPS layer enables the outer helmet to slide or rotate separately from the head. Essentially the MIPS system is sort of like the Cerebrospinal fluid for the helmet. By utilizing an advanced carbon/Kevlar composite shell TLD was able to offset the weight of the added material and create not only the lightest helmet within its lineup, but the lightest helmet amongst the competition it tested. The AS/DOT/Snell SE4 model weighs in at 2.9lbs (+-50grams); while the ECE model only weighs 2.4 lbs (+-50grams). Aside from offering extensive protection and an extremely lightweight feel the SE4 also shines with its ability to keep the rider’s head cool with excellent ventilation. Massive airflow is king with this helmet and it’s aided by 22 high flow intakes and six exhaust ports. The brow cover has been specifically designed to channel air behind the rider’s goggles to cool the forehead while negative pressure ventilation is generated from air flow ducts that direct hot air away from the rider’s head for improved cooling. Currently TLD offers the SE4 Carbon in four designs and seven different color ways. Each helmet comes with two matched visors, an additional set of visor hardware, and a plush TLD SE4 helmet bag.

Off The Line
2017 YAMAHA FZ-10
I
t’s a pattern that’s been going on in the automotive and motorcycle industries for years and it frustrates a lot of enthusiasts. I’m talking about the act of releasing a new vehicle model to only certain regions or markets. This can be done for several reasons such as country or government restrictions/regulations, taxes/fees, market demand, or manufacturers just wanting to test public response. Last year this happened when Yamaha announced the new MT-10 to the European markets but didn’t release a US version—until now. This past June Yamaha released the U.S. version of the MT-10 and dubbed it the FZ-10. The new FZ-10 is the rebellious fraternal twin to the more sophisticated Yamaha YZF R1. They come from the same womb and share much of the same DNA but looks and performance-wise are rather different—most noticeably the FZ-10 is much edgier than the refined R1, wears way less clothes, and falls into Yamaha’s sport category as opposed to the super sport line. The FZ-10 features the R1’s 998cc crossplane crankshaft inline-four engine, however the hi-po, track-oriented engine has been
62
retuned and features a change of internals to help lower cost (the R1 engine features magnesium and titanium bits). As opposed to the R1, the mill in the FZ-10 delivers more in the low-end (peak torque of 81.8 ft-lbs hits at 9,000 rpm) and puts out a claimed 158hp. A slipper clutch helps smooth out power delivery and downshifts while climbing up and down the 6-speed trans. Transmission internals and gear ratios are pretty much the same however, a change of rear sprockets from 41 teeth on the R1 to 43 teeth on the FZ-10 help change the FZs power delivery. The aluminum Deltabox frame is derived from the R1, the difference being the FZ has a steel subframe to help with heavier loads (e.g. a passenger or luggage). Suspension for the FZ-10 comes by way of a fullyadjustable inverted KYB front fork and a four-wayadjustable, linkage-type, KYB single rear shock. The FZ- is loaded with electronics to deliver a custom tailored ride and safety. There’s Yamaha’s Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T), cruise control, and D-mode which offers three riding modes that can be selected between standard (STD) mild (A)
Two Wheel Mania | 1800 841 2960 | www.ChapMoto.com
Two Wheel Mania | Issue 5 | September 2016
and wild (B). Standard offers the smoothest power delivery, A mode adds a bit more oomph earlier in the throttle opening, and B is all out, which can lead to quick little head snaps for those not accustomed to handling twitchy power. There’s also a Traction Control System (TCS) that assists the rider in managing traction on various road conditions by quickly modulating throttle opening, ignition timing, fuel volume, and other parameters.
matter where you ride with this bike you’ll definitely stand out and stand up (I am talking about wheelies again). The FZ-10 may share a lot of DNA with the R1, but it’s part of the FZ family, ranking in at the top amongst its smaller siblings the FZ-07 and FZ-09. What many may like about the FZ-10 is that they can enjoy much of the similarities of Yamaha’s R1 Superbike ($16,490-base model) without
paying the super price. Others however, may complain about the nearly $5K price difference between the FZ-10 ($12,999) and the FZ-09 ($8,190), but when you look at everything you get with the FZ-10 such as Assist and Slipper Clutch, Drive Mode, ABS, traction control, cruise control, and more it becomes well worth the money. The FZ-10 is currently available in Armor Gray and Matte Raven Black with red accents.
While the new FZ-10 may deliver a highly spirited ride and be the ultimate street bike for wreaking havoc across the highways and avenues (I am talking burnouts and wheelies), the angular lines and extremely robotic looking LED headlights, and mini cowl may be pretty polarizing for some. Some people have commented that it looks like a Transformer, I on the other hand am reminded of ol’ Johnny Five from Short Circuit—I’m just waiting for one of those wings on the front cowl to twitch like an eyebrow. One thing is for sure, no

The heart of R1 was transplanted into the FZ-10, however the doctors changed up the combustion chambers, intake ports and valves, used forged aluminum pistons, changed camshaft profiles, and reduced the compression ratio from 13:0:1. to 12:0:1.
“Johnny Five is alive!” The front of the FZ-10 sports a lot of personality. The bike is outfitted with LED lighting front and rear (headlights, turn signals and taillight).

Gas Tank
Cruise control is a very convenient feature and hints at the FZ-10s sport touring capabilities. The rider can engage cruise control in 4th through 6th gears and set it for speeds between 31 and 112 mph.
Yamaha states that the FZ-10 gets around 30 mpg from the 4.5-gallon gas tank.

MX TRACK DAY & HANGOUT
Even though a good portion of the employees at Chaparral Motorsports ride dirt bikes, and a few often ride together, we had never really organized a day where we could get a good size group together to enjoy a day at the track. It was one of those ideas that pretty much all of the staff had discussed at one point or another but nobody had actually acted on it. Then one day someone finally made a phone call, locked in a date, and a ChapMoto MX Track Day/Hangout was set for May 19, 2016. The ChapMoto team loves talking about motorcycles, looking at motorcycles, and helping our customers rebuild, repair, and modify their motorcycles so it only made sense to invite our customers, fans, family, friends, and anyone else who just wanted to hang out at the local track. If you’ve ever been to Chaparral then you most likely

know the shop is centrally located to all the best tracks southern California has to offer—there are six tracks that are within an hour or so drive. Actually, the shop sits directly between two of the more popular tracks in Southern California. The famed Glen Helen Raceway is only 15 miles away to the north and Milestone MX Park is less than ten miles away to the south. We have plenty of great options when it comes to getting some track time, however, since some people would be leaving the track early to put in a few hours of work back at the store we decided to make it easy on everyone and keep it local and roll out to Milestone.
Located in the northern part of Riverside along the Santa Ana “River”, Milestone has become the hometown track for many MX riders in the Inland Empire. With five tracks of varying difficulty ranging from entry level to veteran, Milestone was the perfect spot to accompany the myriad

riding skills of all the riders that had shown interest in attending the ChapMoto Ride Day. With a little coaxing from Travis Snyder (number 599) our Offroad Products Manager, the night before the event, the Milestone crew had the track perfectly prepped and dialed in when we showed up first thing Thursday morning. Not only was the track pristine when we showed up, but the weather was ideal as well. The cool overcast sky helped keep the track moist and tacky while also helping everyone stay cool themselves. The first few to arrive grabbed a spot right along the back stretch of the track and immediately popped up the Chaparral canopy to let everyone know where we were located. Over the next hour-and-half as the early birds were unloading their bikes and setting up “camp” more and more riders and spectators began to arrive. By 10am there was a good size group of people mingling about and checking out each other’s bikes as they changed into their riding gear or made final preparations to their bike. Tools were loaned and help was readily available as people dialed in the air pressure in their tires, checked their suspension settings, and made adjustments to handlebar and lever positioning. Even though some in the group had never ridden together before or might have never even met before, within no time everyone was getting along like this was the group’s typical Thursday morning routine. The eclectic group of bikes on display was as diverse as the riding skills of the group. The lineup consisted of everything from brand new four strokes to mini bikes and even a couple of “vintage bikes”. Our Vehicle Sales Manager, Andy Anaya, was breaking in a brand new Yamaha YZ450F for a family friend. Having ridden the bike a few weeks prior Andy was interested to see what a re-mapping of the EFI system would do (after the first lap he was thrilled to report the bike had really woken up and was much more fun to ride). Noah Perry (number
485) who works in our UTV accessories department brought out his 1988 Honda CR500 and was joined in his vintage venture with a 1986 Honda CR250R that had been restored by one of our Instagram friends/ customers, BiMotofab. Actually BiMotofab brought out a 2005 YZ250F as well. On the mini front, Rebecca from our apparel department had her little moto boy running circles around everyone on his 50cc pit bike. A little after 10 the first group of riders hit the main track and the roar of pipes had everyone itching to get the rest of their gear on and get out on the track. Everyone seemed to enjoy the track options as it helped split the groups up with some people riding the main track while others were moto-ing on the vet track. Then after a 15 minute moto and a 20 minute rest the groups would often switch up tracks or some people would join other groups while others continued to rest or peel off and do their own thing. By noon most of the clouds had burned off and it was starting to get a bit warmer. The tracks got a little drier but the Milestone crew did an excellent job of rotating the water truck between tracks to keep the dust down and conditions optimal. It was about this time that some riders had to leave and head in to work and more new riders arrived. By 1:30 people were pretty hungry so a bunch of hot dogs and hamburgers were tossed on a couple grills and everyone relaxed as they refueled their bellies and bikes. The rest of the afternoon was a mix of more riding, resting, discussing riding techniques, and riding with old and new friends. While it wasn’t necessarily an “official” ChapMoto event, everyone had a great time and we had a good turn out with a fun group of beginner, intermediate, and advanced riders. Best of all we were able to get a bunch of employees, customers, and friends together that had never ridden together before and share the common bond that we all love—riding dirt bikes

Colors: Black
Sizes: 7-13 Weight: 3.4 lbs (size 13) Closure System: Zipper to high ankle with full length Velcro overclosure You’ll get a lot of bang for little buck with the Meteor FX Waterproof Boots. These boots are the lightest of the three coming in at just under 3.5 lbs (size 13), and come up the bottom of the calf. They are constructed of a split grain leather and feature a DryTech waterproof membrane. The full zipper, found on the inside of the foot, allows for easy on/off while the Velcro zipper cover helps protect the zipper and keeps water out. On the front and back is heavy-duty waterproof textile in an accordion pattern to provide full flex and ankle articulation. The Meteor Boots offer the most night time visibility with reflective piping running up around the back of the heel and up the outside front of the foot/shin. These boots have pretty extreme soles compared to the others with a tread pattern similar to a turf shoe. Both the left and right boots feature a grippy rubber shift protector pad.
Sizes: 8-14 Weight: 4.0 lbs (size 13) Closure System: Zipper to high ankle with Velcro tab closure at top More of a street style boot, the Overlord boots fall right in the middle weight-wise, weighing in at 4 lbs (size 13) and also come up to the bottom of the calf. The boots are comprised of a leather upper that is combined with overmolded mesh and articulated textiles for optimum fit and flexibility. Protection is provided by TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) shin, heel and ankle plates. This is the only boot in this comparison that offers extra toe protection with a replaceable toe scuff plate. You will also find TPU strips over the inside toe area on left boot for easier shift lever operation. The closure system is on inside of the foot. While the boots look pretty technical, the soles may leave a lot to be desired for some riders, as they are more of a sport bike-style with minimal tread. What many may like about these boots however, is that they are available in two other color ways, giving you the option of something other than just another pair of black motorcycle boots.

Sizes: 5.5-15 Weight: 4.6 lbs (size 13) Closure System: Velcro cinch tabs with locking teeth and Velcro over closure system. Le crème de la crème, the All Road boot is the premium piece of footwear in this matchup. The mix of materials used to make up this boot: Technomicro (synthetic leather material), Cordura, and Gore-Tex make it extremely abrasion resistant and versatile for just about any weather conditions. The Gore-Tex inner membrane will keep your feet dry and still allow them to stay cool and breathe. A mid-calf boot, the All Road is the tallest and weighs the most of the three at 4.6 pounds (size 13). Unlike the other two, the closure system is on outside of the foot and is comprised of two pull-over Velcro cinch tabs with integrated teeth for extra bite. A large Velcro patch at the top makes for easy adjustability. The soles are comprised of a dual compound and feature engineer boot style tread. Carbon fiber like accordion sections on top of the foot as well as over the Achilles make for easy movement. There’s also internal heel, ankle, and toe protection along with Tehcnomicro toe shift/brake pads over the top of the toes. A small perforated triangle above the Achilles is backed by reflective material to help those behind you see you.

If you like having a variety of choices then look towards the Ninja 300. Aside from the base model (seen here) you can choose from either an ABS version, an KRT Edition with ABS, or an SE version. Other than ABS the only difference amongst the other R3s is the special graphics and paint schemes. While the Ninja may have the largest gas tank compared to the Honda and Yamaha, when looking at the three you don’t even notice the extra gallon capacity. The tank looks svelte and flows well with the body work, plus if you hate stopping for gas the ability to log an extra 50-plus miles between gas stops is a huge advantage. If you’re going to be doing a lot of 2-up riding it should be noted that the Ninja 300 has a very pronounced rider/ passenger seating area with the passenger seat resting significantly higher than the Honda. This can also change up weight distribution and handling.
Nipping at the heels of the popular Ninja 300, Honda added 8mm of stroke to the single cylinder CBR250R, increasing displacement from 249cc to 286cc, and introduced the CBR300R as an early 2015 model. The Honda team didn’t just boost displacement and call it a day however, the 300R features lines and body work similar to its biggest brother, the extremely potent CBR 1000RR. The CBR300R may be the true entry-level bike in this comparison when it comes to peak horsepower; the single cylinder powerplant gives up more than a handful of ponies to the competition. This doesn’t mean beginners can’t have fun with the bike, as it’s got plenty of pep to whip in and out of corners. Extremely skilled riders will take great pleasure in putting the competition in its place despite the power deficiency. The CBR300R has the flattest rider/ passenger seating area.
MPG: 56 (according to Yamaha)
Fuel Delivery: FI Power: 36.8 hp @ 10,800 rpm,

Released after the CBR300R, the YZF-R3 is the newest kid on the block in this round up. Even though the R3 sports looks and characteristics from its bigger supersport brethren, one surprising thing about this bike is that there is currently no ABS option. No ABS may not seem like a big deal to many people but as ABS becomes more prominent on most street oriented motorcycles (the European Union recently mandated ABS on bikes over 125cc for 2016), it seems odd that Yamaha wouldn’t have an ABS option to allow new or novice riders get accustomed to a braking system that will most likely become mandatory in the US in a few years. Similar to the Ninja, the R3 has the passenger sitting about 3-1/2” higher than the rider.
