Chances are if you didn’t own a CRF 50 your neighbor or someone on your block did. Hundreds of thousands of kids have learned to ride and begun to hone their skills on this little red rider and for good reason. As we’ve come to learn these bikes are highly reliable, sturdy, and can be passed on from sibling to sibling. A three speed transmission with auto clutch enables young riders to get a feel for shifting without the worry of herky-jerky clutching or stalling. Similar to the Yamaha, an adjustable throttle limiter lets the parents control the power.

If your child has a competitive spirit and you feel that they may take to motorcycling as more than just a casual activity then you may want to look to a more serious, race-inspired bike like KTMs 50 SX. While the KTM does come with a premium price tag it’s also outfitted with performanceoriented parts like WP Suspension front and rear, lightweight black anodized aluminum wheels, Renthal handlebars, and two radiators to help keep the engine from overheating in extreme race conditions, making the 50 SX a mini moto racer’s dream ride. As your little rider progresses you can dial in the automatic clutch to better suit their riding style or track conditions.

If you’re looking for the easiest motorcycle to get your little ones started on then the PW50 is ideal. No gears to mess with, no oil/fuel ratios to figure out, and the lowest seat height of all the three, the PW50 is a praised by parents for its simplicity; just twist and go. Powered by a two-stroke engine with an exclusive autolube oil injection system you never have to worry about premixing fuel. The fully automatic single speed drive system allows beginners to focus on balance, steering, and throttle control rather than shifting gears. Parents can harness the horsepower with the adjustable throttle stop screw to help keep the peewees in check.

When it comes to motorized vehicles a two wheeler can be pretty intimidating for young riders, and if you have such a rider then a four-wheeler is a great way to get them accustomed to the joys of motorsports. With a fully automatic transmission beginners can quickly adapt to and improve their riding skills on the Outlaw 50. Adjustability is a key element of this machine with adjustable floorboard height and parent adjustable speed limiter. Safety features include a wrist tether to kill the power, a helmet, orange whip flag, day time running lights, and a rider training video. If Barbie rode a quad she’d probably choose the Outlaw 50 as it’s the only one amongst these three machines that’s available in pink (blue is also an option).

This mighty green machine from Kawasaki is another great option for riders 6 and older just starting out in the world of outdoor recreation. With its push button start, auto trans, and full floorboards the KXF 50 delivers exceptional simplicity and foot protection allowing riders to focus on the trail ahead. Worrisome parents can find relief in power reduction features such as an adjustable throttle limiter and a CVT collar that helps reduce top speed. An engine stop lanyard keeps the machine from speeding away during accidental spills and a keyed ignition means no joy riding when the parents aren’t around.

A step up in displacement and power output, with its 90cc engine the Raptor 90 is intended for riders 10 years and older. Sporty and aggressive styling, compact A-arm front suspension with pre-load adjustable shocks offering 5 inches of travel up front and a 5-way adjustable rear shock, the Raptor 90 is like a miniature version of its big brother the Raptor 700R, or as Yamaha describes it “scaled down, not scaled back.” If you have a junior rider with a serious competitive spirit the Raptor 90 is the perfect four wheeler to get them out on the track and at the head of the pack.

If you want the utmost in protection a set of gauntlet style gloves is the way to go. Many riders may resist gauntlet style gloves because they can get pretty hot. These FL2 gloves combat sweaty hands with perforated leather and intake vents at the knuckles and back of the hand. Protection is ensured via the durable palm and knuckle sliders along with leather reinforcement panels in the palm, thumb, and side of the gloves. Impact protection foam is also used throughout. No need to struggle with pulling the gloves on/off to text or answer your smart phone as these gloves feature touch screen technology in the tip of the index fingers.

Gauntlet style gloves may not appeal to stunt riders, so to get good protection out of a shorty style glove you may want to consider the SGS Leather Gloves from Scorpion EXO. A heavy duty grade A leather exterior offers great longevity while Superfabric armor plated material panels and a kangaroo skin palm provide flexible abrasion barriers. Outfitted with Knox Scaphoid Protection System (SPS) palm sliders these gloves help reduce common injuries to the scaphoid bone in the palm by helping the rider’s palms slide upon impact. Further protection is provided with TPU molded knuckles and Kevlar incorporated in high impact areas.

A superbly styled and anatomically profiled glove for sports or naked bike enthusiasts the SP2 has a full grain leather chassis incorporating multi-panel reinforcements for abrasion resistance and fit. The SP-2 features a robust carbon compound knuckle guard to significantly ramp up its protective capabilities. The SP-2 gloves feature ergonomic, advanced compound and MotoGP-derived TPU sliders on the palms which are also backed with EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) foam for impact performance. Lastly, strategically positioned impact absorbing EVA foam has been loaded into key areas such as the cuff, thumb, fingers, top of hand and wrist for additional protection.

SSV WORKS GLOVE BOX SUB

Made of custom-molded fiberglass the Sub Box Glove Box is a direct replacement for the stock RZR glove box and comes with a hard-hitting, marine-grade, 10” subwoofer.

ou like getting squirrely in a side-by-side? You like whipping waves of sand across the lips of dunes? You like skimming four tires over the top of a six-pack of whoops at 50 miles an hour? You like your music loud? Of course you do! Why because you’re a UTV junky and you like everything turned up to 11! The problem is, unless you bought some kind of special edition vehicle with a ton of extra factory parts, UTVs don’t typically come stock with an audio system. So that means if you want to rock out while you roll out, you’ll have to add an audio system. One company that has a great selection of topquality audio components is SSV Works. They offer a full line of speakers, sub woofers, Bluetooth controllers, and just about everything else you’ll need to turn your side by side into a mobile concert. The product we’ve really been impressed with is one of their latest to the hit the market, the Glove Box Sub Box ($349.95, part# SSV-RZ3-GBSB10). Exactly as the name implies, it’s a replacement Glove box with a 10” sub-woofer built right into the side. Designed to fit the Polaris RZR XP 1000,

12

XP4 1000, and the 2015 RZR 900 and RZR4 900, the housing is a custom-molded enclosure made out of durable fiberglass. The exterior of the sub box features a black texture coat to match the interior of the RZR cab and can be custom painted to match any color scheme. The box has nearly the exact same shape as the stock unit but the overall dimensions are slightly larger. However, the box isn’t so big that you notice it or that it hinders the passenger’s leg space. The left side of the sub box has a cut out in order to house the accompanying 10” sub-woofer. SSV did their homework on this setup and designed the inner dimensions of the enclosure to offer the proper air space and airflow to get the best sound quality from the speaker. In order to achieve premium bass sound SSV did have to make a sacrifice; the actual glove box portion is significantly smaller than stock. Whereas the interior of the stock glove box is about 8-1/2” deep on the bottom left side and 10” deep on the bottom right side. The Sub Box is about 1-1/2” deep on the left side and 2-1/2” deep on the right side.

Two Wheel Mania | 1800 841 2960 | www.ChapMoto.com

Two Wheel Mania | Issue 3 | December 2015

So basically that means where you could once store some goggles, a small tool kit, a couple of water bottles, along with some other small miscellaneous items, with the Sub Box you could fit a pair of glasses, some paper work and a pair of thin gloves. What the Sub Box lacks in storage space it greatly makes up for in sound quality via SSV’s premium marine grade 10” -600watt (300w RMS) subwoofer. With about .68Cu Ft. of airspace inside the enclosure it’s just the right amount to allow the 10” sub to hit a nice solid bass note. Tucked up under the dash, hidden away from prying eyes and out of reach of most flying debris, SSV’s sub speaker is optimized to withstand the rough and rugged conditions associated with off roading. Basically the speaker can take a beating while delivering a smooth and deep beat. Aside from excellent build and sound quality the other great benefit is that the unit is relatively easy to install and doesn’t require any cutting or permanent modifications to your machine. It’s a straight bolt-in application and should take about 1-1/2 hours (longer if you’re installing an amp and additional speakers). SSV provides a detailed set of instructions and all you need is a basic set of hand tools, along with a drill and small drill bit to make a hole to run the speaker wires. Basically you just need to remove the hood, dash assembly, right side fender, drop the stock glove box, install the new glove box and subwoofer, run your wiring and then reinstall everything.

The sub delivers a deep bass note, but that awesome sound does come with some sacrifice. The storage compartment in the Sub Box is significantly smaller than what you may be accustomed to in your stock unit—nothing that can’t be solved with some door bags or other storage options.

Now, if you don’t already have an audio system with an amp and some smaller speakers to cover the mids and highs then one of SSV’s 3 or 5 Speaker Complete Kits is definitely the way to go. These kits include everything to get your RZR blasting. The 3 Speaker Complete Kit ($909.95, part# SSV-RZR1k-3) comes with two 6-1/2” front or rear speakers, a 10” sub, 4 channel amplifier, wiring kit and iPod/mp3 input and USB charge kit. The 5 Speaker Package ($1,159.95, part# SSV-RZRF-5) is the exact same but include two sets of 6-1/2” speakers for both the front and rear.

WATCH THE VIDEO

Want to hear the sub and what one of SSV works 3 Speaker Complete Kits sounds like? Check out the Glove Box Demo video on our YouTube Channel.

Even though the housing for the subwoofer is a little bit larger than the stock glove box unit, once installed you hardly notice it, as there’s still plenty of room for the passenger’s feet/legs.

Honda XR650L Bulletproof reliability is what the Honda XR series of dual sport motorcycles have always been about. The Honda XR650L has remained relatively unchanged since 1992 except for some different colors and graphics. Solid design and engineering has given the popular Honda a lifespan that requires little change. The XR650L is for those who refuse to stop where the pavement ends and prefer to add lots of dirt roads, trails, and forgotten byways into their motorcycle adventure. With a heavy emphasis on off road capabilities and the ability to run the streets legally the XR650L is the perfect platform for riders who are in the opposite 80/20 crowd than those of the KLR650. The XR650L is 80% off road and 20% on road in its configuration. The XR650L features convenient electric starting, excellent power, and torque that is ideally suited for both on and off road riding. The ergonomics of the XR favor an off road stance as the bike is taller with greater travel than most dual-purpose motorcycles. The seat height is 37 making the XR650L quite tall in the saddle and a chore for anyone smaller in stature to balance while waiting at a red light. The Honda’s height and suspension travel make the XR650L quite capable in the dirt, yet still handles unexpectedly well on the street. For extended high speed road travel the Honda does not compete with the creature comforts offered by the KLR650’s windscreen and better asphalt orientation, but its rugged reliability, excellent off road characteristics, and competent road handling make the XR650L a serious dual-sport contender. MSRP for the 2015 model: $6,690.

...lightweight and narrow just like a motocrosser giving the motorcycle a very capable and agile feel off road

Yamaha WR250R The Yamaha WR250R is ideal for those who ride off road way more than on, but is yet still highly street accessible. The WR250R is directly descended from Yamaha’s highly successful YZ motocrossers so it is without a doubt an off road oriented machine. The WR250R is Yamaha’s first fuel-injected on/off road motorcycle that relays input from a crank sensor, intake air pressure sensor, and throttle position sensor to a compact ECU to provide optimum combustion. The ECU controlled exhaust valve, along with the electronic intake control valve, helps to broaden the powerband making the WR250R a very rider friendly motorcycle. The WR250R is lightweight and narrow just like a motocrosser giving the motorcycle a very capable and agile feel off road. The electric start and quiet muffler make the motorcycle more manageable and less obtrusive when on road and its street legality allows you to run into town out of the hills for lunch, or to access another riding area without having to load the bike onto a trailer. The Yamaha WR250R is not a motorcycle you would even remotely consider using extensively on the road. It lacks the size necessary to make it a longer distance dual-sport, but it is ideal for fire roads and trails that require a license to travel to and for brief excursions into town. MSRP for 2015 model: $6,690.

If serious off road riding with a little street action is what you crave the Suzuki DR-Z400S fits the bill quite nicely. Suzuki uses regular telescopic, oil-damped, long travel (11.3 in), 49mm cartridge-style forks with protective rubber boots, and features adjustable compression/rebound damping along with adjustable spring preload for smooth performance on all types of on/off-road terrain. For the rear suspension Suzuki employs a lightweight aluminum swingarm tied to a mono-shock, rear shock absorber that features 11.6 “ of travel, and compression damping/preload adjustments. The shock connects to the swingarm through a progressive linkage system. The DR-Z400 is powered by a four-stroke, 398cc, DOHC, liquid-cooled, dry-sump engine that produces strong low RPM power which comes in handy in off road riding. The 5-speed trans is smooth and easily clickable through all gears with easy to find neutral. Lightweight riders or those who keep on-bike storage/luggage to a minimum will find

Those who have ridden Honda’s XR650L and Kawasaki’s KLR often comment on the DR 650’s spunky (read torquey) motor and praise it for its smooth power delivery. While the DR 650 does have more displacement than the Z, the 650 sports a 2” lower seat height and offers the lowest riding position of the bunch (barely squeaking under the KLR by .2”). For those that have shorter inseams the lower seat height makes frequent on/off the bike errands and riding in stop-and-go traffic a little easier. The seat is also shaped differently than that on the DR-Z and has a dip in the center to give the rider a more “inthe-bike” feel rather than on top of the bike. DEEP FREEZE:

COLD WEATHER MOTORCYCLE GEAR

R

iding in cold weather isn’t much fun if you aren’t properly outfitted with the right riding gear. Not only is it not fun, but it can also be dangerous, causing numbness and stiffness, which can result in reduced reaction times. Cold weather can also be distracting, leading you to focus on the chill running through your body rather than

paying attention to the road. However, with the proper motorcycle attire you can put up a better fight when taking to two wheels in freezing weather. Here are a few suggestions.

IT’S A BALACLAVA, NOT A DESSERT

Okay, so you’ve got your chest, arms, and legs covered in a base layer, but what about the rest of your body? It’s important not to forget about the feet, hands, and your

Product Spotlight

PROTAPER

MICRO HANDLEBARS

N

early a quarter century after ProTaper set the dirt bike industry on fire with its 1-1/8” taperwall handlebars the company is stoking the fire with its latest product. Hitting the other side of the spectrum from its oversize handlebars, this time ProTaper is all about going smaller and targeting the peewee riders with its Micro Bars. The Micro Bar is one of those products that makes you say “why didn’t I think of that?” because it totally makes sense. What doesn’t make sense is expecting a person with hands a fraction of the size of an average adult try to comfortably grip a set of handlebars designed for adults. So ProTaper set out to solve that problem with the Micro Bar which features ends with a smaller outer diameter (OD) than a standard 7/8” bar. The ends are 17mm OD compared to standard bars which have 22mm OD ends. Sure it might not sound like much of a difference to the average adult rider, but the 5mm reduction can make a world of difference for kids. A smaller grip area can inspire confidence in a young rider by providing better control, easier manipulation of the lever(s), and help reduce fatigue. The new Micro Bars are made of the same highquality, proprietary 2000 series T6 aluminum that ProTaper’s other bars are made out of, and other than the smaller grip ends, the rest of the bar measures in at the traditional 7/8” diameter so they’ll fit with stock bar clamps, controls, kill switches etc. For added strength, durability, and to reduce flex the bars come with a cold forged aluminum cross bar with a foam pad for impact protection. Visit ChapMoto.com for more ProTaper products

ProTaper’s new Micor Bar kit is ready to rev up the youth market. Whether purchased as a complete kit or individually, riders have the choice of five different bar styles: Schoolboy Low, Schoolboy Pro, Schoolboy High, Honda Mini, and KTM Mini The Micro Bars will easily bolt onto pretty much any 2-stroke, 85cc and under dirt bike and are available in five different widths/bends to fit a variety of preferences and riding styles. As mentioned earlier the Micro Bars will fit with stock bar mounts and controls, however, traditional 7/8s grips and throttle tubes will not work. Therefore, to make installation easy, ProTaper offers complete kits ($134.99) that come with a set of Micro Bars, ProTaper Micro 1/3 Waffle Grips, a Micro throttle tube, and seven throttle cams to fit a variety of motorcycles. ProTaper also offers all the components individually. The new Micro Grips ($10.99, part# 302-5045) are made from ProTaper’s specially formulated soft synthetic rubber compound to give young riders the best combination of impact absorption and hand preservation. They are currently only available in one color, light grey, and have a 1/3 waffle pattern to provide great gripping areas for small hands. The grips also have an over-sized grip tip designed to take the abuse of multiple crashes without tearing and helps keep small hands from slipping off the ends. The Micro Throttle Tube ($69.99, part# 302-5044) features a two-piece design, is made of T6 aluminum, and has a knurled and anodized finish. The throttle tube also comes with seven different throttle cams.

features a mix of 1” wide and 2” wide flat stock steel for bracing and mounting. With the stock seat, fender rails, and rear fender removed the sub-frame bolts right in place utilizing much of the stock hardware and mounting holes. Whereas the stock seat sets the rider down low for that “in the bike” feeling, the new sub-frame raises the seating position by about 4-1/2” so the rider is on top of the bike for a more offroad oriented riding position. Also, rather than being tucked into the bike, the flat seating surface of the sub-frame gives the rider room to move forward or backward as needed when attacking the terrain. At the front of the bike the fork legs were dropped out from the triple trees to allow for a set of Star Motorcycles Fork Boots to be installed. The fork boots are one of those accessories that are rather easy to install but make a big difference in the styling department. Lighting up front was also addressed. The stock turn signals and headlight are rather obtrusive so we swapped the turn signals out with a set of minuscule Lockhart Phillips Short Stock Marker Lights. Rugged knobbies like the TKC80s are a perfect match for this scrambler and will provide plenty of offroad traction.

Feature The Bolt comes with black mag wheels which look great but we felt that a set of spoke wheels were more befitting for the scrambler look. Up front we used a Ride Wright 19”x3” wheel and out back we installed a matching 17”x3.5” wheel. Both wheels were wrapped in Continental’s TKC80 tires. DOT approved and designed for 40% on road and 60% offroad, the TKC80s offer good dirt/mud traction with their knobby profile but still deliver solid grip on paved surfaces. The stock rotors wouldn’t mount up to the new wheels so we used a set of Twin Power Mesh rotors, which matched up with the spoked wheels perfectly. We went full old school dirt bike/BMX style in the handlebar department by installing a set of Biltwell 1” Moto bars. With their short rise and cross bar the handlebars were a great addition to further emphasize the intended nature of this bike. We reused the stock controls, but did ditch the OE grips for a set of Biltwell Thruster Grips. Down below the stock controls were left in place, but the footpegs were tossed aside and a set of Works Connection Wide pegs were modified so that they could be bolted onto the stock peg mounts. The new pegs add much more bite and should help the rider maintain solid placement of their feet when offroading. As you can tell in these photos the stock Bolt tank was left intact. The stock tank has a nice shape to it and is compact enough that it flows well with the new lines of the bike. Over the front tire, the fender was eliminated and in its place a fork brace was installed. The raw aluminum fork brace was custom made in-house and gives the front of the bike a more aggressive look. To help protect the engine from rocks and flying debris when “scrambling” we installed a custom skid plate that was fabricated in-house as well. At the rear of the bike a Low Brow Customs Manta Ray fender was trimmed down and then mounted in place. The tail end of the fender mounts to the underside of the rear of the sub-frame while the front section mounts to the original fender mounts behind the battery tray. A simple seat base was cut out of ¼” thick plastic and shaped to match the lines of the sub-frame. The stock seat mount bracket was re-used so that the new seat will slide and lock in place like the original. The base was covered in heavy duty foam to provide a comfortable cushion and then it was wrapped in black vinyl with split stitching for a vintage look. The engine was left in its stock form, however, the original intake and muffler were replaced with components from Kuryakyn and Vance and Hines. The Kuryakyn Velociraptor velocity stack intake kit helps give the bike a sportier look and the black finish against the chrome wire mesh filter cover looks really sharp. Installing the Vance and

36

A set of Maier Vintage Oval Number Plates were used as side covers to hide the open spaces in the subframe. Hines Comp Series Muffler saved a lot of weight, as the stock muffler and accompanying mounting bracket are extremely heavy. The V&H unit mounted in place with ease and significantly improved the sound with a nice throaty rumble. To ensure the bike was properly tuned with the new intake kit and muffler, a V&H Fuel Pak was installed. The Fuel Pak plugs in-line with the factory wiring harness and can easily be programmed to dial in the fuel map settings. The pièce de résistance of this scrambler build was the paint job. Since this was a retro style bike we figured what better way to emphasize the look than with a throwback style paint scheme. Coincidentally, Yamaha is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and to commemorate the milestone brought back the classic yellow basecoat with black and white film strip/speed bar style graphics. It’s a great combination and looks really stylish together and we thought it would really set our Scrambler apart. Our in-house graphic designer created the speed stripe graphic but tweaked it ever so slightly by putting the white stripes at a slightly forward slant. It’s very subtle but helps evoke a feeling of forward movement. We handed the gas tank and rear fender over to a local painter to spray them both in Yamaha yellow. Then once the paint on the tank was dry the graphic was laid across the bottom edge and then several coats of clear coat were applied. Overall we were really pleased with how our scrambler, aka The Scrambled Egg, turned out. We were able to achieve our goal of building a bike that others could easily replicate and we have had quite a few people call and ask for items like the sub-frame and fork brace. Once again the Bolt has proven that it’s a very versatile platform and can easily be transformed into just about any style of custom motorcycle and will still look good.

Off The Line

2016

KAWASAKI

KX 450F

Tipping the scale at a mere 239.6 lbs (wet weight) the all-new 2016 KX 450F rolls in as one of the lightest motorcycles in its class thanks to major revisions to the engine and chassis.

A

side from improving overall performance and quickness, reducing weight in a motorcycle can also help reduce rider fatigue (less weight to manipulate and deal with), and if done correctly, improve the motorcycle’s agility and handling. With the 2016 KX 450F Kawasaki’s team of skilled surgeons meticulously shaved away ounces in some areas and shed up to 1 lb in others in order to achieve a weight loss of more than 7 lbs compared to the 2015 model.

Beyond the essential engine components the exhaust and airbox were addressed as well with a new header design featuring an integrated resonator chamber for crisp throttle response and a new mass-centralizing exhaust muffler to reduce sound and weight. A new high-flow airbox with rear intake channels was utilized to improve flow and reduce noise. Kawasaki did away with steel parts in the airbox assembly resulting in a weight savings of 8.8 oz.

A fresh engine setup resulted in a reduction of 4.4 lbs while also improving power output. Some of the significant changes to the engine include new, lighter engine cases with the oil scavenger pump moved from the left case to the right case. A revised bridged-box bottom piston was also employed and is based on AMA factory race bikes and features a new crown design that matches the new intake valve shape, contributing to the 12.8:1 compression ratio. The revised intake valve shape was developed to increase air volume and the 36mm titanium intake valves have a revised head area. With a slimmer throat angle and reduced recess the new design (similar to valves on Kawasaki supersport engines) contributes to increased high-RPM performance.

The new slimmer and lighter perimeter frame and swingarm improve rider feel. The frame is lighter by 1 lb with the perimeter spars 6mm slimmer allowing for easier rider movement. The subframe (seat rails) has thicker walls for increased strength. Overall rigidity, rear-wheel traction and rider feel have been improved with a new alloy swingarm with a cast front section and twin tapered hydro-formed spars.

To go along with the new valve the intake port was revised and is less curved improving mid-high RPM performance and over-rev. The intake port cores were also given a special coating during the head casting process to make the ports smoother for better flow and efficiency. Weight was reduced with a new intake cam that features the timing advanced by 2 degrees for better low-mid range RPM reaction. 38

At the rear of the bike new linkage ratios for the Kawasaki Uni-TrakÂŽ suspension system were designed to suit the new aluminum frame and swingarm. Mounting the link below the swingarm allowed for a longer rear suspension stroke, while maintaining a low seat height. Up front the industry-leading Showa Separate Function Triple Air Chamber (SFF-Air TAC) fork handles all the major and minor bumps. With a wide array of revisions, weight savings, and power enhancements from tire to tire, what was already a beast on the track and a multi-time champion, the new KX 450F is bound to continue to be a formidable weapon for Kawasaki riders.

A new skid plate made of resin material and offers great protection without excess weight. The revised design has oval holes that facilitate easy mud removal and helps reduce weight.

The axle nut holds the 80 lb ft torque setting without the need of a cotter pin for ease of maintenance at the track.

Chassis Kawasaki was able to shave more than 3 lbs. from the chassis components with the aid of the new slimmer, lighter perimeter frame which is more than 1 lb. lighter and a new swingarm which is 7.8 oz lighter.

Engine ECU Engine ECU remains fully programmable thanks to the new handheld Kawasaki Accessory KX FI Calibration Kit. This portable device eliminates the need for a trackside laptop computer and stores up to 7 preset custom maps, giving riders precise adjustment of fuel and ignition settings.

Handlebars With 35mm of range, the multi-position handlebars feature two mounting holes, and the 180-degree offset clamps provide four individual settings to suit different size riders for ultimate comfort and control.

Digital Fuel Injection DFI couplers are again available for the Digital Fuel Injection system allowing for quick changes of the fuel injection mapping to suit any riding condition. The couplers are designed for standard, hard, or soft terrain.

Launch Control System The push-button activated Launch Control System helps obtain hole shots by retarding ignition timing in first and second gears, helping to maximize traction off the line. Once the rider shifts into third, normal ignition mapping is resumed and full power returns.

Foot Pegs Wide 50mm foot pegs can be adjusted 5mm lower than stock to lower the center of gravity and suit a range of riders.

GEARING UP

This may sound like you’re prepping your gear for a trip to the trails, but we’re talking about something else. You “gear up” or “gear down” by changing sprockets, front or rear, to different sizes. Because you can change either front or rear sprockets, it’s best to begin by determining their relationship. Sprockets, or “chainwheels” more literally, are measured by their number of teeth. To determine the final drive ratio, divide the rear sprocket size, say 50 teeth, by the

WHY CHANGE THE RATIO? Want the short answer? Gearing down by installing a larger rear sprocket (like with our YZ example) increases the final drive ratio and reduces top speed, but can increase acceleration. Gearing up, like with a smaller rear sprocket, decreases the final drive ratio and adds more top speed to your motorcycle or ATV. Short answers never tell the whole story, of course. Setting the gearing

$100 or less (sometimes way less). If you’re a beginning rider, you might consider gearing down. Low-end power delivery and more effective acceleration will serve you better than top speed. Expert riders may already know how to get the best low-end delivery, and might want to gear up a vehicle for improved topend power. But let’s look at specific applications to give a better answer.

modifications to your bike or ATV that improve acceleration. Ride a Homda TRX 450R and want even better low-end power? Gear down. Switch that stock 38T rear sprocket for a 39T or 40T. Ride a Kawasaki KX450F and want more top-end? Gear up. Switch that stock 50T sprocket for a 49T.

STREET MOTORCYCLES If you ride a sportbike on certain technical roads or race tracks, perhaps, you can gear down for best acceleration and low-end power delivery. For street riders specifically, changing gearing can help you tune your bike to a desired cruising rpm. For example, if your bike rolls down the freeway at 6000 rpm at 65 mph, you could gear up to lower that cruising rpm, reducing vibration and improving fuel mileage. Changing gearing on street bikes can be more complicated than with a motocross bike or ATV. If you change the front sprocket, your street bike’s speedometer will very likely read incorrectly. You’ll need to correct that. Also, changing sprockets on a track-riding sportbike can change the effective wheelbase of the bike enough to affect handling. Those effects are not as pronounced on a dirt bike or quad. Visit ChapMoto.com for more Sprockets

50

Most sprockets are made from either steel or aluminum, or maybe even a mix of the two. Steel sprockets are generally less expensive, and better for longevity. Countershaft sprockets are often made of steel; they need to be durable and their small-size means weight is usually not an issue. The best steel sprockets use hardened and heat-treated steel. Sprockets made of aluminum are significantly lighter, but have a shorter life span, and are more expensive than steel. For race bikes or ATVs, the weight savings can be huge, often a couple pounds. For added durability, aluminum can be anodized, but sprocket life span is not an issue for most racers.

front sprocket. On a smaller sprocket, the drive chain must turn a tighter radius, which increases friction and decreases the life expectancy of the chain.

Changing one tooth on the countershaft sprocket has a more significant impact on the gearing than changing one tooth on the rear sprocket. Plus, countershaft sprockets cost less. But, it’s most often best to make changes with

Personal Profile As he got older Matt’s fascination for motorcycles was still a big part of his life, but instead of jumping and bumping his way across the hills of Beaumont on his CR 125, CRF 250R, or YZ250F, his two-wheeled passion focused on rolling slow and low on his own customized rides. He picked up his first street oriented bike, a used 2003 V-Star 650 when he was 21. It was a mess of a machine with a putrid purple paint job that would make Barney sick and saddlebags that looked like they came straight from the old west (and smelled like it too). Matt wasted no time stripping the bike down and turning it into his version of a lean and mean bobber with a blacked-out paint scheme, super-chopped rear fender, no-nonsense solo seat, drag bars, and a set of Cobra pipes with black header wrap.

RZR. After working at Chaparral Motorsports for the past six years—the majority of that time rolling ATVs, UTVs, street bikes and dirt bikes off our showroom and into the waiting hands of happy new owners—last year Matt took up a spot in our video production department informing viewers about the latest and greatest products to hit Chap Moto’s shelves. A natural public speaker, easy conversationalist, and with his extensive background at Chaparral that covers everything from helping customers with accessories and gear selection to vehicle sales, shoving Matt in front of a camera made perfect sense.

More of a turn and burn kind of guy, once he got the bike to his liking Matt tired of the anemic power put out by the 650 and yearned for more power. So he sold the V-Star and scored himself a 100ci Victory Kingpin. With more than two-and-a-half times the displacement as the 650, the Kingpin had more than enough power to satiate Matt’s heavy throttle hand. Never one to leave well enough alone, Matt wanted to treat his new Vic to some TLC and did so by adding chrome pullback T-bars, a flame-stitched, two-up seat, high-flow K&N intake kit, Victory Shotgun pipes, and dropped the rear 1-inch. Even though the Kingpin was way more powerful and much more comfortable than the V-Star, once he had it dialed in to his liking he was ready to sell the Kingpin and move on to something else. For the first time in many years, Matt currently doesn’t own a motorcycle but has big dreams of one day owning a fully customized Roland Sands Design bobber, and when that day comes he hopes to be cruising the pristine beaches of Costa Rica with his bride, Kayla.

Matt’s knowledge of all things motorsports stems from his first experience on a Yamaha TT-R 125 when he was 13 years old. After eyeballing the blue machine in his uncle’s garage, Matt barely waited for his uncle to finish saying “Okay I’ll teach you how to ride it,” before he was climbing all over the dirt bike and making “brapp, brapp” sounds while yanking on the throttle and flooding the carb. Once his uncle was able to get the bike turned over, he gave Matt a few tips and pointers and then in a cloud of Rancho Cucamonga dust Matt was gone. It wasn’t until 30 minutes later that Matt was seen again, this time however, he was pushing the bike back home with a dirt laden grin across his face. After dropping a few splashes of fuel into the TT-R’s tank—Matt’s uncle was smart enough to not hand over a dirt bike with a full tank of gas to a newbie teenage rider—Matt was off again in a blaze of glory (at least in his mind it was a Ricky Carmichael-esque hole shot).

Tech Tips/How To

MOTORCYCLE PREPAREDNESS HOW TO PROTECT YOUR BIKE DURING WINTER HIBERNATION

W

hen you’re a motorcycle enthusiast winter time often means sitting around waiting for the roads to clear up and the weather to break so you can finally get back in the saddle. That is, unless you’re one of the lucky ones who lives in a part of the country where you have the pleasure of experiencing year-round riding weather. For the rest of us, our bikes become like bears as they’re hidden away in a cold, dark place, hibernating until the spring thaw. Just like bears prepare for hibernation by foraging on food so they can make it through their winter sleep, it’s important to prepare your motorcycle for its three-to-four months of down time. It doesn’t take a lot of work or even a lot of money for that matter to get your motorcycle prepped for a winter’s nap. The important thing is to follow some, if not all, of these steps ahead of time, otherwise it could cost you a lot of time and money when the time does come to start riding again.

1

BAD GAS

Letting gasoline sit for an extended period of time can lead to degradation of its original chemical composition which can result in hard starting and rough running engines or even worse engine problems. The timeline/ shelf life for gasoline varies depending on myriad of things. How tightly sealed the storage container is, changing weather conditions/temps, and moisture can speed up degradation. Old or gas that has gone bad while sitting in your motorcycle can cause internal issues such as oxidation leading to varnish and gum deposits fouling up fuel lines, your fuel filter, or your clogging passage ways in your motorcycle’s carburetor or EFI components.

BED, BATH & BEYOND

Before you put your motorcycle to bed you should give it a thorough wash, detail, and wax. Storing your bike with a bunch of dirt, gunk, and road grime can lead to accelerated break down of delicate components like rubber fuel and oil lines. If you live near the coast or in areas where they salt the roads during winter it’s extremely important to give your bike a good cleaning as salt can lead to rust and the accumulation of other unsightly blemishes on paint or chrome surfaces. There are many areas to clean and tend to from your body work to your chain, brakes, and seat. S100 offers a long line of cleaning products from its Total Cycle Cleaner ($12.49, part# 353-5116) to its Shine Enhancing Cleanser ($10.49, part#353-5112) which is a great pre-wax treatment and helps remove water spots and

Just like gasoline, old/used motorcycle oil sitting in your system can be bad for your engine as well. Used oil contains contaminants that when sitting for extended periods can leave nasty deposits and just muck up your internal passages. So it’s smart to drain your old oil and change out the oil filter for a new one. Most likely your engine will still be pretty warm from when you rode around to mix in the fuel stabilizer, so the old oil should flow out pretty easily. Once drained and the drain plug is cleaned/reinstalled, screw on a new motorcycle oil filter and top off your oil tank with the recommended

TEND TO IT

Nothing is more frustrating than heading out to the garage for the first ride of the season and hearing nothing when you click the starter. Your battery hates sitting idle just as much as you do. However, your motorcycle battery has a much more adverse reaction to inactivity—it will die. In order to ensure your battery will be good to go when you are you need to tend to its needs, which means you need to connect it to some kind of maintenance

It’s important to check your motorcycle tires before storing your bike. You want to inspect the tires and make sure there are no foreign objects, slow leaks, or major cracks in the tires that can lead to loss of air. Once you

TUCK IT IN

Once you’ve addressed everything you wanted to on your motorcycle and you’re satisfied it will hold up through its winter hibernation it’s time to tuck it into bed with a cover. Sure a standard blue tarp will work, but you won’t like the results if moisture gets trapped underneath or if your motorcycle is stored outside and the wind picks up. The course surface of a tarp continually brushing against your gas tank or motorcycle fenders can really work the paint over. You need a cover that breathes, won’t trap moisture, will fit tightly over your motorcycle, and won’t blow away. BIG TIME BRAKING

INSTALLING GALFER’S OVERSIZED ROTOR KIT

W

hen it comes to making performance improvements to their motorcycles, most owners will often focus on the engine or swapping drivetrain components like the sprockets. The majority of people want things like faster top speed, improved hole shot performance, or more horsepower/torque. These types of changes are good and definitely make for a more fun motorcycle to own and ride. However, there is one area many riders overlook when it comes to getting the most out of their ride, the brakes. Improving your braking components can be relatively easy with things like a simple pad swap or rotor upgrade and is definitely an area that shouldn’t be overlooked. Galfer has established itself as a leader in motorcycle braking components covering the gamut from pads to rotors to brake lines for street, off road, metric cruisers, and Harley-Davidson motorcycles. 60

One of Galfer’s more popular offerings is the Oversized Rotor Kit for Kawasaki KLR650 models ($289.00/part# 014-KITOS51). The Oversize Wave rotor in this kit is laser cut from high carbon 420 stainless steel/8 composite and has been heattreated to prevent warping. Between the material and the full floating wave design the rotor helps provide excellent braking characteristics through improved heat dissipation and allows for even and consistent pad contact. Included in the kit are semi-metal compound brake pads that are designed to deliver great performance in all conditions and offer excellent fade resistance. The steel-braided brake line provides improved protection and durability as compared to the stock rubber line, while also improving overall brake feel and feedback—plus it just looks cooler than the standard black rubber line. Installation is a breeze and requires basic hand tools.

1

WHAT YOU GET

Here’s everything you get with the Oversize Rotor Kit for Kawasaki KLR models: stainless steel wave rotor, stainless steel braided brake line, brake caliper hanger bracket, and new brake pads.

4

BOLTED

With the stock rotor out of the way you can now install the new rotor. Place the rotor over the center of the hub. Make sure the writing is facing outward. Use some medium strength thread locker and secure the rotor to the wheel using the stock bolts. Make sure to torque the rotor bolts to factory spec.

2

STARTING POINT

Installation begins by removing the front wheel. Loosen the axle/axle nut followed by the axle pinch bolts on the front side of the fork legs. You can then remove the axle and pull the wheel from the fork legs.

5

A LITTLE DRAINING

Next, grab a container to catch the brake fluid, then use a box end wrench to loosen and remove the lower banjo bolt from the caliper. Once the brake line is removed, place the end of the brake line in the catch container. Up at the brake lever remove the brake fluid reservoir cap and rubber boot to help the fluid flow out of the brake line.

3

DON’T BE FOOLED

Next, remove the stock rotor. Side by side you can see the significant difference in size of the 320mm Galfer Wave Rotor and the 280mm stock rotor. Don’t let the size fool you, even though it’s 40mm larger, the Galfer rotor is significantly lighter, which in turn equates to less reciprocating mass and easier braking/handling.

BONUS TIP: All brake rotors tend to build up brake pad compound material over time. Pad build embeds itself into the disc and can retain heat, which promotes disc warping. To prevent this from happening, and to ensure your pads always brake on good and clean rotor surface, Galfer recommends getting your discs bead blasted at least once a year. If you are racing or use the bike for heavy sport use, Galfer recommends doing this more times during the year.

EXHAUSTING OPTIONS:

FINDING THE RIGHT PIPES FOR YOUR HARLEY OR METRIC CRUISER

I

f there’s one commonality amongst Harley-Davidson and cruiser owners (other than they love their motorcycles) it’s that they are never satisfied with their motorcycles. I don’t mean never satisfied in the sense that they can’t stand riding them, I mean never satisfied in the fact that there is always something they want to modify, customize, or

change. Even rolling a brand new bike off the showroom floor and firing it up for the very first time leaves something to be desired; there’s something missing and it can usually be traced to the stock exhaust system. From the factory the exhaust system is set up to meet strict government and sometimes state (California we’re looking at you) regulations for both emissions and sound. Meeting those regulations means stuffed up exhaust systems that don’t look, sound, or perform the way many motorcycle owners would like. Therefore the stock exhaust is typically the first thing an owner will change on their bike. With new exhaust manufacturers and different types of systems popping up almost every month, trying to find the one you like can be overwhelming. But what it really comes down to is four determining factors: How much are you looking to spend? Is there a certain style you like? Are you aiming for a specific sound? How important is performance?

STYLE Style is completely subjective. What appeals to one motorcycle owner may be a complete turn off for another. The good thing is there are a myriad styles to choose from starting with pipe configurations like True Duals, 2-into-1, and 2-into-2s as well as muffler styles such as slash-cut, fishtail/sharktail, turndown, and megaphone just to name a few.

A 2-into-1 system means that the head pipes coming off the front and rear cylinders meet together in a collector creating a single exhaust exit on one side of the bike—like the American Outlaw High 2-Into-1 Complete Exhaust System from Freedom Performance ($699.95 - $799.95, part# 235-HD00296). The American Outlaw system features a triple-step header design that’s been tuned to deliver excellent performance and terminates with a 4-1/2” megaphone muffler that produces a deep note.

True duals describe a complete exhaust system in which the headers are independent of each other and the mufflers exit on either side of the bike. Many bagger owners like true dual systems like Freedom Performance’s Racing Complete Dual Exhaust System ($949.95 $1,099.99, part# 235-HD00134) because it gives their motorcycle a balanced look with mufflers tucked under

styles of true duals that you can choose from. In 2009 Harley came out with a new frame design and along with that they addressed excessive heat issues felt by the rider and passenger by rerouting the head pipes. Instead of the rear pipe splitting into two with one side coming down along the left side of the bike and the cross over tube routing down across the back of the transmission on the right side of the bike to join into the front head pipe; for 2009 Harley routed a single rear pipe to come down and forward, ahead of the transmission on the right side and then joins into the front head pipe. The front pipe draws

is that there are a wide variety of styles to choose from for either single or dual pipes. Fishtails have always been a very popular muffler style with their finned tips. Freedom Performance has their own version called Sharktails ($399.95 - $499.99, part# 235-HD00022). If you go the slip-on muffler route you need to make sure that whatever you select will fit up to your stock head pipe(s) or whatever head pipe(s) you plan to use. A slip-on muffler is quick and easy to install and will help allow for better exhaust flow resulting in a slight gain in horsepower and a new exhaust tone.

across the underside of the frame and then routes under the left side saddlebag while the rear cylinder was routed under the right saddlebag.

If money isn’t a factor then a full system should be considered. A properly tuned full system will deliver significantly more performance than just a set of slip-ons and will set you up to be better positioned for optimal This new cross under design helped pull the hot exhaust pipes away from the legs for a more comfortable ride. Many aftermarket exhaust manufacturers have followed suit with their own cross under designs creating similar solutions for rider/passenger heat reduction. One example would be Freedom Performance with its Right Side Tuck and Under Header system ($449.95 - $599.95, part# 235-HD00238). Available for pre-’09 Harley baggers, there are a couple differences between Freedom’s Header system and the stock unit. First, Freedom’ system is a true dual system with completely independent pipes for both cylinders. Secondly, the stock cross under tube has been squeezed to provide more ground clearance, while Freedom’s cross under tube is a full diameter tube and still maintains plenty of ground clearance.

PRICE

performance as you continue to hop up your powertrain. Just like slip-on’s, full systems are available in a variety of different styles (2-inot-1, 2-into-2, True Duals) as mentioned earlier. Some full or complete exhausts, like the Independence LG Complete Dual Exhaust System by Freedom Performance ($569.95 - $739.99, part# 235-HD00016), are one-piece units in which there are no separate mufflers to install. This makes for a much easier and faster installation as compared to a True Dual bagger system that has a combination of head pipes, mufflers and heat shields. Other factors that can affect the price of an exhaust system are things like heats shields, finish, and the type of material it is made out of. While the majority of exhaust systems sold these days come complete with all the mounting hardware and heat shields you may run into a couple here and there where heat shields are sold separately. So it’s important to thoroughly read through the product description and understand exactly what you are getting. While most mufflers and complete systems are offered with a chrome finish, some give you the option of choosing a high temp ceramic finish which will usually cost a little bit more than chrome.

If cost is a primary concern then your best bet is to look

FINAL THOUGHTS

For bikes with electronic fuel injection a fuel manager will allow you to tune your bike to achieve optimal air/fuel ratio and dial in the bike according to the performance If after searching all over the place you can’t seem to find an exhaust system that suits your needs you could always design and build your own custom pipes. A Builders Exhaust Kit ($164.95, part# 072-1802-0270) like the one offered by Biltwell comes with pretty much everything you need to fabricate your own exhaust. Complete with radiused bends, straight sections, exhaust flanges, and exhaust tips you could cut, weld, and grind to your heart’s content (or have your welder do it for you) until you have the wildest set of pipes ever mounted to a motorcycle. To really ensure you get the most out of your exhaust upgrade you need to include a high-flow air cleaner and some type of fuel management device if your bike has EFI or a jet kit if you are running a carb. Your engine is a giant air box and the more air you can feed into it the more power you can create. A freer breathing air cleaner will allow more air to flow into your cylinders which will help create a larger explosion on the combustion stroke. Air filter selection can be as simple as a K&N high-flow air filter kit that will still fit behind your stock cover, or you can upgrade to something like Kuyrakyn’s Pro-R Hypercharger ($299.99 - $349.99, part# 025-9460) which comes with a new outer cover, filter, and mounting assembly all designed to improve air-flow and stuff your cylinders with plenty of power potential. Any time you make performance modifications to your bike you need to tune your bike to make sure the air/ fuel ratio is in check and you are getting the most out of your new changes. If you own an older model cruiser or Harley that

modifications you’ve made by installing the tuner and riding the bike or by uploading and flashing a new map into the bike’s ECM. Fuel tuners come in a variety of options with some that are strictly plug-n-play based of off pre-programmed maps that you use to flash a new map into your bike’s ECM. Others like Dynojet’s Power Commander V Autotune Kit ($279.95, part# PC1020-0923) offer even more tuning capabilities. With this setup you install the unit, load up a base map based on your engine/ performance mods and then it will automatically dial in and fine tune your bike as you ride. Finding the right fuel tuner device for your bike often comes down to how in-depth you want to get with your tuning capabilities and how far you intend to take the performance of your engine. If you just plan on swapping out pipes and air cleaners here and there without doing heavy internal modifications, then a basic tuner will be fine. If you plan on installing a big bore kit, stroking the motor, porting and polishing the heads, and/or installing a tuned induction system, then a fuel tuner with more tuning capabilities will be a better fit for you. So, we’ve covered a lot of ground here, but with this info you should have a better understanding of what to look for and things to consider when shopping for your next set of motorcycle pipes. With so many options it can be a pretty exhausting search, but then that’s part of the fun of owning a motorcycle—researching, shopping around, and daydreaming about how certain parts will look or perform on your bike in order to make it fit your personal style.

Two Wheel Mania | Issue 3 | December 2015

As the crowd would prove, not even triple-digit heat could scare off motorcycle enthusiasts as hundreds of bikers flocked to San Bernardino on August 5th for Chaparral’s last bike night of the season. While the weather was scorching hot, the parking lot was burning up as well with Team RB Freestyle igniting the crowd into a frenzy with their stunting skills. You don’t often see tandem stunt teams but the RB team has mastered the ability to throw sky high wheelies, lay down smoky burnouts, and perform two-wheeled acrobatics all while Randie (the R in RB) perilously dangles off of the front and back of the bike. It’s a sight to see and the duo kept the crowd entertained with multiple shows throughout the evening. In between stunt shows riders reunited, clubs mingled amongst one another, and families perused the numerous bikes that lined the streets and parking lots. There were plenty of bikes to drool over and get inspiration from as well as vendors such as Fly, Shinko Tires, Galfer Brakes, Sidi, Bridgestone, and HJC Helmets displaying and educating the crowd about their latest products. Meanwhile, the wafting smoke from Seasoned with Love BBQ had people’s mouths watering with a hankering for some tasty grub. As always those in attendance had the opportunity to win some great prizes from the Text-to-Win contest and several lucky people walked away with new gear from Speed & Strength and Icon as well as $25 Chaparral Motorsports gift cards sponsored by Law Tigers. The highlight of the giveaways was the #IneedShinko Instagram contest in which a set of Shinko Tires were given away to Instagram user @euromess, who was desperately in need of some new tread for his Yamaha WR250. It was a very busy and very quick three hours. But as they say, time flies when you’re having fun. Hopefully time will fly during the fall and winter months, otherwise it’s going to be hard to wait until next spring for the next Chap Moto Bike Night to roll around.
