TRAIN YOUR BRAIN TO BE POSITIVE Life doesn't always go according to plan, but whenever it doesn't the most important thing to remember is... it's what you do next that matters. Which is why whenever we make a mistake or when something goes wrong, we always remember to do our 123. 123 is a cool little technique that teaches your brain how to think, so that you can start to feel more positive and move forward.

1 2 3

ONE good thing about what happened. TWO things you learned from what happened. THREE things you could do differently (for next time).

how it works By thinking of ONE good thing about what happened, you train your brain to recognise that no matter what has happened, there is always something good and positive that can come out of it. By thinking of TWO things you learned, you train your brain to recognise that ALL situations are an opportunity for you to learn something. By thinking of THREE things you could do differently next time your brain goes into creative thinking mode and you train it to be good at solving problems.

TRAIN YOUR BRAIN TO BE POSITIVE let's see how it works in real life Can you think of a situation in your past that didn't quite go as planned? Maybe you failed an exam, or fell out with a friend, whatever it is write it down below and then apply the 123 rule.

The thing that happened was... ONE GOOD THING ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED. 1.

TWO THINGS YOU LEARNED. 1. 2.

THREE THINGS YOU COULD DO DIFFERENTLY. 1. 2. 3.

how do you feel about what happened, now? Hopefully 123 has helped you to look at this situation differently. Write down how you felt at the time and how you feel about it now:

TRAIN YOUR BRAIN TO BE POSITIVE some important things to remember: When you start your 123, make sure you always state the what the difficult situation was using facts ONLY. This helps you to think more clearly. Being POSITIVE doesn't change facts... instead it changes how you feel about them and what you then do about them. We aren't suggesting that false positivity is good... there's no point saying that everything is AWESOME- when it isn't.

We aren't saying that PESSIMISM is bad either. Pessimism is a tendency to see the worst aspect of things or believe that the worst will happen. Pessimism can be extremely useful when you are planning for things. It's good to be prepared if things don't go according to plan. What we are saying though, is that it's extremely useful to be able to think positively and to recognise that no matter the situation, it's an experience you can learn from. One other thing to remember is that it will all work itself out.... it always does. If you think of every other time in your life things have gone wrong, you have life moves on and so do you. Whatever situation you are in... it is TEMPORARY- it will not last. The key is to be in control of the ONLY thing you can CONTROL: what you do next: what you choose to say, choose to think, choose to feel and what action you choose to take.

TRAIN YOUR BRAIN TO BE POSITIVE let's practice 123 on your parent/ caregiver shall we? Ask your parent/ caregiver about something that went wrong in their life... ask them to describe what happened. Then ask them to tell you...

ONE GOOD THING ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED. TWO THINGS THAT THEY LEARNED.

If this had happened to you in your life, can you think of 3 things you would have done differently?

THREE THINGS YOU COULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY. 1. 2. 3.

and finally... some questions for you to think about and answer Why do you think being positive is important?

Can you think of a time in your life when you already showed your positivity?

One thing you have learned about yourself today.
