ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑ ΠΟΛΙΤΙΣΤΙΚΗΣ ΑΠΟΚΕΝΤΡΩΣΗΣ 2019


The Animattikon Project / Summer Edition Founded in 2017, in the framework of the European Capital of Culture PAFOS2017, the Animattikon Project is an international animation festival organized and produced by the Kimonos Art Center annually in the town of Pafos. In 2019 the Animattikon Project presents its first Summer Edition in the beautiful spaces of the Anassa Hotel. Offering five different animation workshops for children and adults, with seven invited artists and in collaboration with two other international animation festivals, the Summer Edition of the Animattikon Project is produced in collaboration with the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Culture and Education of the Republic of Cyprus, in the framework of the Cultrual Decentralisation Program.


THE ANIMATORS


Juliette Marchand (France) Juliette Marchand is a French former student from ENSAD (School of Art Decoratif) in Paris were she learnt Video and animation and directed animation movies. After an international career in different studios, as a director and Art director, she teached in MICA, the American University in Baltimore and mentored the animation MASTER films at the Animation School Gobelins in Paris for a couple of years. Juliette Marchand is currently the VAF progamer in Viborg Denmark.


Studio Cabeza Voladora (Spain) Cabeza Voladora (Flying Head) is a company headed by Arly Jones and Sami Natsheh that makes animations for films, TV, advertising and music videos. They both met in Alicante in 2009 and teamed up to work on animation projects.By that time, Sami Natsheh had already produced half a dozen short fims between animation and fiction, highlighting his nomination for the Goya Awards for Espagueti Western as Best Animation Short Film in 2009. Arly Jones has collaborated on numerous cartoon series as a cartoonist of concepts, backgrounds, characters and props. He participated in the process of aesthetic creation of the film Chico & Rita, Goya for Best Animated Feature (XXV edition), receiving the same award in the XXIV European Film Awards. In 2012 he was nominated for an Oscar in the same category. Since having teamed together they have produced short films such as James the Bearded and the music video Up in the Sky for Kapland band, which combines both real shooting and traditional animation. For this project they have been awarded in festivals in Los Angeles, Paris and Saint-Petersburg. In 2017 they directed the children animated short film Colors, selected at numerous international festivals and nominated to Spanish Cinema Award Goya as Best Short Animated Film. Thomas Kunstler (Italy) Thomas Künstler (b. 1991 in Rome, Italy) is an Italian filmmaker and stop- motion animator who currently lives and works in Athens, Greece. He received his degree in Film Production, specializing in Directing & Documentary Production, from the University for the Creative Arts (2015, Farnham, UK). His work has been featured in multiple festivals like the Animasyros Film Festival (Syros, Greece), Herceg Novi Film Festival (Montenegro), Drama Film Festival (Drama, Greece), Aesthetica Short Film Festival (York, UK) and the RTS Student Television Awards (London, UK) amongst others. In collaboration with Animasyros & independently he runs animation workshop for kids all around Greece. His latest work deals with Greek music and culture. He is currently in development of his new debut project Márkos: his first stop motion animation feature film about the life of famed Rebétiko musician Markos Vamvakáris, produced by Konstantinos Vassilaros (of Athens-based StudioBauhaus, the Athens Studio Head of Production for Loving Vincent). Márkos has been selected for pitching at the Animasyros IFF Agora (2018, Athens, Greece), and in early development at Albascript+, (within frame of the Balkan Film Market, Tirana), Animarkt Festival (2019, Lódz, Poland) and more recently at MFI Script 2 Film Workshops (2019, Nisyros & Rhodes, Greece). His 2 previous animation shorts: Rebetiko, and De Les Kouventa reached online 150 countries, with more than 100,000 views, and 520,000 impressions. info: https://www.thomaskunstler.com/


Panayiota Michael (Cyprus) Panayiota Michael was born in Paphos in 1987 and studied Illustration for Animation in the United Kingdom. She works as a Graphic Designer & Cartoon Illustrator in Paphos where she participated in a variety of art projects and workshops. In 2009 she represented Cyprus in Brussels at the Eurocartoon Exhibition as she was honored with the 1st Prize in the National Cartoon Contest in Cyprus. In 2014 she was invited to visit public schools in order to present the profession of cartoon artist and show to hundreds of kids how to design their own cartoons.


Marios Mattheou (Cyprus) Marios Mattheou was born in Paphos in 1985. He studied graphic arts, with a specialization in animation and multimedia in the Technological Educational Institution of Athens, Greece. He then received a post diploma in interactive media in the Cyprus University of Technology in Limassol, Cyprus. He is working as a graphic designer in the advertisment and product promotion department of a private company. Since 2008 he has been visiting schools in Cyprus and Greece, organizing animation workshops and teaching animated techniques to children and adults. He has participated in several international animation festivals with his films, receiving awards and distinctions.

Brett Ingram (USA) Brett Ingram (American, b. 1966) is the author of The Secret World of Renaldo Kuhler, and director of two documentary feature films, Monster Road and Rocaterrania. His work as a writer and director was screened on Sundance Channel, PBS, National Geographic, Animal Planet, and at hundreds of film festivals, museums, and cinemas around the world. A Guggenheim fellow in Creative Arts, Ingram has taught filmmaking and cinema studies at Wake Forest University, Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, and University of North Carolina Greensboro in the United States. info: https://www.brettingram.org

Bruce Bickford (1947 - 2019)

The late Bruce Bickford was an American animator, illustrator, painter, and sculptor based in Seattle, Washington. Best known for his collaborations with musician Frank Zappa in the 1970s and his appearance in the critically acclaimed 2004 documentary film Monster Road, Bickford created two of the most original clay animated films ever made, Prometheus’ Garden (1988) and CAS’L’ (2018), as well as numerous two-dimensional “line” animations. His films, illustrations, paintings, and plastiline sculptures have been exhibited in Europe, Japan, throughout the United States, and now, Cyprus. Though Bickford’s work never achieved widespread commercial success, his singular vision and instantly recognizable aesthetic continue to inspire countless animators and filmmakers around the world. The Animattikon Project, during its summer edition, is paying tribute the amazing Mr. Bickford, by screening two documentaries focusing on him, both directed by Brett Ingram, Luck of a Foghorn and Monster Road, and two of his remarkable animatd films, Prometheus’ Garden and CAS’L.
