FALL 2013

ASTP-Proton off to a good start The first ASTP-Proton fall conference took place in Warsaw, Poland on 17 and 18 October 2013 carrying the very fitting theme, “Success in KT/TT through collaboration”. 114 participants from 23 countries joined the conference to be inspired, network, increase their technology transfer knowledge and have fun. Topics from equity management to working with students and patient-related tech transfer were discussed. Apart from the fact that it was the first big event of both associations that decided to merge in May 2013, it was also a showcase of many other beginnings. New initiatives introduced during the conference included the Knowledge Stock Exchange and the Directors’ Forum. ASTP-Proton new board members Michel Morant and Marta Catarino were elected as new ASTP-Proton board members. Michel will be Vice President NAAC (National Association Advisory Commiittee) and Marta will be Vice President Programming.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR We just concluded the ASTP-Proton Fall Conference in October and are already working hard on what we believe will be the biggest gathering on academic knowledge and technology transfer in Europe -- the ASTP-Proton Annual Conference on May 14 -16, 2014 in Oslo, Norway. The Fall Conference was the first major tangible result of the merger between ASTP and Proton to date. Michel Morant and Marta Catarino, currently still members of the board of Proton Europe, were elected in an extraordinary general assembly as ASTP-Proton Board Members. The merger and resulting changes to our articles of association have led to some limited changes to membership types, a summary of which can be found on page 4. You will have seen the logos of the two parent organisations on the first page of this newsletter as well. Coming January, a new logo for ASTP-Proton will be revealed and combined with a new housestyle for the association.

114 participants from 23 countries joined the conference to be inspired, network, increase their technology transfer knowledge and simply have fun with their peers.

Moving forward Marta could not hide her excitement to work for the new organisation, “It’s the best of both worlds,” she said during her election on the last day of the ASTP-Proton fall conference in Warsaw. “If we want to be recognised as the premier European association in technology transfer, joining together for the benefit of our members is the way to go,” added ASTP-Proton President Sara Matt-Leubner.

A new ASTP-Proton website will also be introduced to better serve our growing community of technology transfer professionals. It will contain integrated social networking capabilities that we will roll out in the new year. We are very excited about these developments and wish we could give you a preview but it’s still in the works! So that’s all for now. Changes are happening all around us. We are experiencing the first serious frost of winter as we finish this issue of the newsletter and look forward to the winter solstice and holiday period later this month. Flip through the following pages for more ASTP-Proton related news and benefits.

Kind regards, Koen Verhoef, RTTP Vice President, ASTP

New initiatives launched

To amplify the dynamism ever present in our events and enhance community-building even more, these two initiatives were launched at the ASTP-Proton fall conference.

Knowledge Stock Exchange: novel format, big hit A three-track parallel session with 6 mini sessions each, that’s the Knowledge Stock Exchange (KSE). But it’s not just the usual session that you see in any conference. At the KSE, technology transfer professionals of all levels had the chance to choose how they wanted to spend their 180 minutes. By sharing their initiative to a group of peers with an open question-and-answer session, one-on-one meeting with a chosen professional or presenting a service or information related to technology transfer. Some also chose to just sit back, relax and listen. It is the first of its kind in any ASTP-Proton event ever created and the most appreciated too. The topics discussed during the event are ongoing at the KSE website. Want to share your two cents? Log in or register here.

Initiative sharing is one of the three tracks included in the Knowledge Stock Exchange. The other two are face-to-face meeting and information corner.

Directors’ forum: experience(d)-sharing Technology transfer directors from all over Europe joined together in the first ASTP-Proton event especially organised for them on 16 October in Warsaw, Poland. Around 30 directors discussed problems, solutions and hopes for the profession in what was a very rare opportunity in knowledge transfer. The evening’s moderator and ASTP-Proton Board Member Sean Fielding described the event as a “gathering of the best brains in knowledge transfer”. The directors talked about how their offices are funded, who their stakeholders are and the most frequent challenges they encounter. The participants were divided into tables with specific topics of discussion on each. While most tables concluded that stakeholders include the university, governments and researchers, they all agreed that success came from effective management of strong relationships. The directors agreed that they are in the profession to be catalysts of change but it is not yet certain if change is happening fast enough.

The Directos’ Forum is the first ASTP-Proton event designed for technology transfer directors.

Sean ended the evening with a challenge, “We have a great opportunity to shape the future of our profession. The challenge is to find ways to keep up the dialogue.” The Directors’ Forum is an invitation-only affair. It is intended to further develop the forum in the years to come.

What changes for you? By this time, you must have received the letter that asks you to update your information in the ASTP-Proton database. BEFORE MERGER • name of organisation: ASTP or Proton Europe • membership types: individual (academic) individual (business) institutional

AFTER MERGER • name of organisation: ASTP-Proton • membership types: individual institutional

Individuals and organisations involved in knowledge and technology transfer in its broadest sense are eligible to become ASTP-Proton members. The new Articles of Association of ASTP-Proton no longer make a distinction between academic and business members. Consequently, ASTP-Proton now has only one type of individual membership. It is still possible to obtain a discount for groups of individual members (please check the rates on the next page). The association has adopted a membership type under which academic institutions or companies can become members. News from ATTP Next application deadline: 23 January 2014 The Alliance of Technology Transfer Professionals (ATTP) is the international body for professionals engaged in technology transfer (TT). The transfer of discoveries and knowledge from academic research into the marketplace is recognized globally as paramount to building and sustaining a robust and innovative world economy. The professionals who work across continents to facilitate this transfer are as diverse as the cultures they represent. They must, however, have a common core skill set to manage the complex set of challenges that technology transfer presents. ATTP was established to recognize and promote individuals with these core competencies and to provide approved training for individuals wishing to acquire these skills and become Registered Transfer Professionals (RTTP). The RTTP program reflects the highest quality expectations defined by the profession and will provide individu-

Why is RTTP important?

Quotes from registered technology transfer professionals In short, RTTP allows me as the person ultimately making the hiring decision to compare, contrast and evaluate candidates even before I get them into the interview room. As such my willingness to consider candidates from around the world has been greatly enhanced as a direct result of the introduction of the RTTP designation. - Sean Flanigan, B.A, LLB, RTTP University of Ottawa - Assistant Director, TTBE President, AUTM So why did I choose to apply to become RTTP? I believe in our profession and as a leader in the area I think it is as important to me, as to my team, to have a professional qualification. When I see someone who is RTTP, I am confident in the value of their award as I trust the quality and stringency of the review process – and the reviewers. - Alison Campbell, OBE, PhD, RTTP Managing Director – King’s College London Business Ltd Now: Alison Campbell Associates Ltd

Participate in this survey We proudly announce that the new ASTP-Proton survey of K/TT activities for FY2012 has been launched. As we would like to proceed with monitoring the European progress in the field of knowledge and technology transfer, we invite you to participate in this year’s survey in partnership with AUTM. The survey results should help research institutions and technology professionals to improve their services by comparing your institution’s performance with other comparable institutions in both your country, the rest of Europe as well as the US and Canada through the joint ASTP/AUTM STATT database. The results will furthermore be used by the European Commission to produce comparable data on the knowledge transfer activities of Europe’s leading universities and publicly-funded research institutes for innovation policy. Please contact Ms. Arlyta Wibowo if you have not received the survey invitation and would like to participate.
