MINE ENTRA 2013 GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT 1. INTRODUCTION Mine Entra 2013 performed well closing at 80% capacity. The number of foreign nations increased with companies from China and the United Kingdom exhibiting for the first time. New technology was introduced to improve communication and interaction including an online matchmaking facility, lead retrieval service as well as a mobile app for the show. In addition to the mining, engineering and transport-related products and services, this year Mine Entra featured building and construction as these sectors have emerged as Noma Ndlovu

strong support sectors to the core sectors of the exhibition.

General Manager 2.ZITF FACTS AND FIGURES Company Mine Entra 2013 ran under the theme “Extract Value, Boost Economic Growth”, to emphasise the importance of value addition of mineral resources in order to maximise the benefit to the overall economy. The business-only exhibition ran from 24-26 July 2013 between 0900-1700 hours daily.

2.1 Exhibitor Statistics The majority of the 239 exhibitors were local companies with 51% based in Harare, 45% from Bulawayo and the balance came from other cities. In total, 212 Zimbabwean exhibitors participated, of these, 189 were direct and 23 were indirect exhibitors.

With regard foreign participation, 15 direct and 12 indirect exhibitors took part, mostly from South Africa, with companies from China and the United Kingdom exhibiting for the first time.

2.2 Space Occupied The size of the exhibition has been growing. In the last three consecutive years, Mine Entra has occupied over 6,000m2 peaking in 2012 at 6,648m2 from less than 2,000m2 occupied in 2009. The 2013 edition closed with 6,015m2 which was 80% of the net area available for sale. Halls 3 and 4 were occupied as well as the external sites around these halls.

MINE ENTRA 2013 GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT 3. EXHIBITOR PROFILE The product mix was varied including heavy engineering, equipment, conveyors, pumps and rubber products in Hall 4. Hall 3 housed services which included security, medical aid services and protective wear among others. The external sites had interesting earth moving equipment, automotive displays and heavy engineering.

Building on interest shown last year, the building and construction sector was formally introduced this year and it took up 6% of the total space sold. Future Mine Entra editions will promote more supporting sectors in order to provide a total solution to the industry.

The small-scale miners were also represented at Mine Entra 2013. Two prominent small-scale mining bodies exhibited namely Women in Mining as well as the Zimbabwe Artisanal and Small Scale Miners Council (ZASMC).

3.1 Foreign Component The 3 foreign nations that participated were China, South Africa and the United Kingdom. This is an improvement from last year, when only South African-based companies participated. In addition, the majority of the Zimbabwean companies exhibiting represented foreign principals. MINE ENTRA 2013 GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT 4. VISITOR PROFILE 2,558 business visitors were admitted into the exhibition centre compared with 2,357 last year. With the support of our stakeholders, notably, the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development and the Chamber of Mines, the majority of the top mining buyers and decision makers attended and held meetings with exhibitors. Match-making meetings took place between exhibitors and buyers on the exhibition stands as well as in dedicated facilities in the two halls.

The visitor profile included mainly :     

Mining and exploration companies and individuals Engineers and contractors Mechanics and artisans Industry experts and consultants Investors and financiers

Small-scale miners also visited the exhibition to sample new technology and products related to them.

5. SPECIAL HIGHLIGHTS As always, Mine Entra 2013 offered various opportunities for information sharing, networking, business facilitation and branding. 

Concurrent with the expo, high-profile conferences were held on 24 and 25 July 2012 in conjunction with the Chamber of Mines Zimbabwe and sponsored by Banc ABC and ZB Bank respectively. The conferences ran under the theme of the exhibition and attracted over 250 delegates. The main conference on 24 July was officially opened by the Honourable Deputy Minister of Mines and Mining Development, Mr. Gift Chimanikire.

Topics discussed over the two days included: o

Unlocking the potential of Zimbabwe’s mining industry

Catalysing the beneficiation of the Zimbabwean mineral output – an Industrial Policy perspective

o

Attracting foreign direct investment to fund mining projects

o

Towards an optimal mining fiscal regime : balancing the contribution, viability and competitiveness of the Zimbabwean mining sector

Exploring the capacity of the local manufacturing industry to serve the mining industry

o

Mining procurement linkages in Zimbabwe : initiatives for growing the supply sector capacities

Mine Entra 2013 was officially opened by the Honourable Deputy Minister of Mines and Mining Development, Mr. Gift Chimanikire at an Official Opening Ceremony on 26 July.

The technological advances introduced for the expo included: o

A mobile phone application compatible with Apple and Android smart phones for information and updates about the expo and its concurrent activities

o

A lead retrieval system, in conjunction with strategic partner Tarinaka, to assist exhibitors to quickly capture information about visitors to their stands and help them further qualify and follow up sales leads. The badge scanners eliminated the need for business card exchange or manual visitor log-in systems

o

A Twitter hash tag #MineEntra was created to stimulate debate around issues discussed at the conferences

Dedicated venues for matchmaking were in both halls to provide environments conducive for business-to-business meetings. Exhibitors Lounges were in full operation as well as a media and business centre. In addition, participants could access free internet services.

From a logistics perspective, the company was self-sufficient with regard stand building infrastructure and introduced customised “Walk-on-Packages” for exhibitors to differentiate their stands.

Before, during and after the expo, the Company offered high-visibility sponsorship and advertising opportunities for companies to increase their visibility at Mine Entra 2013.

6. SURVEY RESULTS SUMMARY The ZITF Company continually evolves Mine Entra in line with participants’ expectations using information gathered on their perceptions, attitudes and suggestions for improvement. Exhibitors and visitors were randomly selected to give feedback on their experience at Mine Entra 2013. Responses from a sample of 50% of exhibitors at the show indicate that    

95% rated the show good to excellent up from 88% in 2012 95% are likely to exhibit again next year up from 94% in 2012 91% will recommend the expo to their peers 31% used the technology introduced for the show and 90% were happy with these new tools

A survey of 5% of the business visitors brought out the following:       

In terms of profile, 30% of respondents occupy marketing roles, while 25% are in executive managerial positions 65% contribute significantly to the overall decision-making process and 29% occupy an advisory capacity 73% felt their field of interest was represented comprehensively up from 71% last year 72% met relevant target leaders in their sectors up from 68% last year 20% used the technology introduced for the show and 9% were happy with these new tools 95% will visit Mine Entra 2014 94% will recommend Mine Entra 2014 to their peers, a 4% increase over last year

7. MINE ENTRA 2014 The next edition runs from 23-25 July 2014. The company will continue to working hard to ensure the expo attracts even more regional and international players.

8. CONCLUSION The company sincerely thanks all the sponsors and partners who contributed to the event’s success. This bears witness to the goodwill the exhibition enjoys from its stakeholders. Mine Entra is a firmly established brand, being supported and recognised by the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, the Chamber of Mines Zimbabwe, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce, Zimtrade, the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries, the Zimbabwe Investment Authority and the City of Bulawayo.
