CHARLOTTE KATE JOHNSTONE
Hello, my name is Charlotte Johnstone. I’m a confident and positive BA (Hons) Graphic Design student at Plymouth College of Art. Previous to my degree I gained a love for Fashion, Pattern and Print which I have taken with me throughout my education so far. However, in the last 12 months I’ve developed a love for Editorial design, without noticing I’ve created many pieces of work that have been based around editorial design as it comes very natural. I enjoy creating the best of both worlds, designing very clean minimalist designs however, I also love to get creative and really fill the space using lots of different media’s and colours. Ever since a young girl I’ve been playing with layout, cutting shapes out of different magazines and placing them in certain ways that looked good. One of my main interests is Independent magazines everything from the content to the design and print excites me, my favourite three magazine are DAZED, nomad and backstage talks. In my spare time, I enjoy travelling and spending time with family and friends. I also enjoy visiting museums and exhibitions, I recently visited the Louvre in Paris which was an amazing experience. This is more than just a portfolio of my best work, it’s a book that represents me as a designer. It delves into different styles in which I enjoy working, it includes many different experiences which I have engaged in throughout my journey so far and in turn my creative personality is hopefully reflected throughout. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed creating it.

7” RECORD COVERS This project was one of my first that introduced me to creative image making, it allowed me to use mixed media to create and design song inspired record covers. I created the first sleeve using continuous line drawing then filling parts using colours, textures and images of David Bowie himself, this cover was for David Bowie’s song Heroes. My second sleeve was created for Kate Bush’s song Wuthering Heights and inspired by her music video and the Wuthering Heights novel. The sleeve itself was created using digital collage of photographs and textures that I had previously created using ink and paint. My final sleeve was for Skepta’s song Shutdown, which was inspired by the genre of the music which is Grime. The texture was created through the spread of paint across paper and edited using Photoshop to darken the colour and texture.

This was a really enjoyable project, I was able to be very free with the way I worked and the different media’s that I used and I was really pleased with the outcomes.

COLLECTION ZINE
Yuk Hui Temple - Cheung Chau, Hong Kong. 2012
This is a small zine I designed and created as an extra project over one summer, hopefully to then be sold to help with funding for my final year show at the end of my degree. This booklet includes photographs from some of the trips I have taken, it includes places such as Hong Kong, Thailand and Paris just to name a few. It is also made up of small snippets of information that relates to the countries I have visited and the dates. This is the digital version of the zine however just recently I created a Risograph print of the zine in black, white and fluo pink which was hand sewn bound together with bright pink thread. This was a great personal project for me showing my journeys and where I have travelled in the world.

I have always been hugely inspired by Japanese design whether it’s print, digital or architecture. I created a range of screen and digital prints that were inspired by Japanese culture, design and typography. I first started by creating base layers of print where I created shapes and symbols that represented Japanese words and meanings just using an open screen technique. I then developed them further by creating digital files which I then exposed on to a screen to then be able to make clean top layers. I really enjoy screen printing so for me this project was hugely enjoyable and I was incredibly pleased with the final result. Open screen printing is such an interesting process as you cant always plan the outcome and sometimes can be pleasantly surprised.

LUX CANDLE SPINNERS Lux candle spinners were my final outcome for a product and packaging project where I was creating a product based upon dreams. I created a spinning candle dream enhancer, it functioned by using the essence of a candle and the shadows of symbols projecting on the walls to able to theme a persons dream while they sleep. I created three different themes, Zen, Wealth and Happiness. The idea was that these candle spinners could help people to not only to sleep but to be able to dream of a chosen theme. The candle and spinning shadows would help people to be able to fall into REM sleep which is the stage of sleep that is most likely to cause dreaming.
Lux Candle Spinner Packaging
This project was a challenge, creating a huge concept and idea from the word “dreams” was daunting, however once I started to really think and open my mind to what I would achieve I had a range of ideas. Another positive was my final product, the candle spinner, I was really pleased to be able to have created a product that didn’t previously exist and for it to come out and be a great piece.

FASHION EXHIBITION BRANDING Portfolio front cover being used at the exhibition
BA (Hons) Fashion year two at Plymouth College of Art required a graphic designer to be able to brand one of their up and coming exhibition to exhibit their final garments. The concept of their project was about protest and they wanted to be able to show their manifestos on their work using a tag. I was more than happy to be able to help them as I have previous experience within fashion and still a huge interest within it. They wanted posters, tags, a portfolio front cover and invitations that would be sent out. They had a small amount of research that really helped me understand the look they were going for which was a huge help, I then went away and created some first developments that I could show them within a small presentation. We discussed the venue that they were holding the exhibition and it was brought up that the building could be used on the posters so I took a few images of the building made some illustrations out of them and they worked really well for the posters and then after the slight development they worked well for the portfolio page. These photographs show the designs being used at the exhibition, and across on the right are the first developments to then the final posters. 12

I recently did a placement with design studio Intercity, working with Nathan Gale who was based at Ocean Studios, Plymouth. While I was their I did a few little design pieces just to help out but I also had a short brief that was to create a seasonal ‘What’s On’ guide to promote the offer and drive footfall to the venue. The brochure needed to appeal to a broad range of audiences including the cultural sector, local families, tourists visiting Plymouth and those looking to develop their skills in art, craft and making. At the same time Intercity were also doing this project for Ocean studios but had a much longer time period than I did. The brief had stages which I had to meet one being to create four different concepts to then have a small crit to decide which one I would take forward. Myself and Nathan both liked the same idea so I went straight on and created the booklet, Nathan was able to share all the copy and images with me that Ocean studios has sent over. This was a great experience for me as a new designer because I was able to see all the programmes the team uses to communicate as the other part of the studio is in Bristol and work within the fast pace of a design studio. It was a really great opportunity and I finished with a great outcome.

FASHION BRANDING
Jennifer Claire vinyl internal label
This fashion branding project for me was extremely rewarding, the brief was to brand as young, up and coming fashion designer at Plymouth College of Art, a fashion branding collaboration project. I was extremely lucky to work with fashion designer Jennifer Claire, and we ended up working brilliantly together. I also collaborated with a commercial photography student to be able to achieve professional photographs which was great and was also a really good way of gaining contacts. Jennifer’s brand was all about the curves of a body and emphasizing them, She also wanted a very sophisticated clean look and we achieved that well. I was very pleased with the design of the logo and the name of the collection it all worked together harmoniously. As part of the projects I created swing tags, internal labels, brand guidelines, a logo and business cards. The internal labels were a laser cut vinyl which was a really innovative way of creating a internal label and both myself and Jennifer were really pleased with them. The swing tags were doubled with the first card having the JC engraved into it using a laser cutter and then the second card had the collection name digitally printed onto it which gave a very clean finish. We were both extremely pleased with the outcomes and the look of the finished product and project as a whole. It was an extremely rewarding project. 15
