Events Guide Spring 2018
OCEAN STUDIOS
Welcome 2
EVENTS GUIDE Welcome to the Spring 2018 guide to Ocean Studios. After what has felt like a long winter, it is doubly exciting to see the variety of activities on offer whether you want to make something yourself, watch others, join a debate or bring your family.
Perhaps surprisingly, there is good evidence that as technology grows we increasingly value individually made, high quality, artisan work. At Ocean Studios, we are proud to collaborate with others and play a part in building a supportive ecology for making. Whatever your interest or connection, we hope there is something in our Spring 2018 programme that will tempt you to join in. As human beings we are all creative – come and unleash your inner maker this spring!
The creative economy is booming. Currently worth ÂŁ91 billion to the UK and growing at twice the rate of other sectors, it is testament to the huge talent and skill to be found across the country and in all parts of Plymouth. Plymouth is known as a city of makers. Our creative economy centres on making in its widest sense combining arts, craft, digital, technology, engineering plus social and community making. Now being heralded as the 4th Industrial Revolution, new technologies are combining with established practice to change the way we work and live our lives.

Event Space and Emerge Drawing Symposium Main Event 13th of April, All-Day.
A one-day symposium considering the embodied experience of drawing. This event responds to the increasing proportion of artists in the South West working in performative drawing practices, gathering a delegation at a vital time to acknowledge and interrogate this movement and discuss ideas around the future of drawing practice. With the question of whether contemporary drawing in its current formation finds itself challenged and interrogated by a performative turn, we invite debate around how we understand relationships between the body and drawing.
