MY DESIGNS Development Idea’s Working Towards The Outcome Book Design

The initial brief for this project, was to create a book cover and an inside design with a twist, so using my previous designs, I decided to explore the concept of old and new. Using primary and secondary textures, to create this range of development idea’s throughout this presentation. Starting with the concept of old I created this simplistic starting design for a book cover/inside a book double spread page above.

From my research of looking at previous book designs, I decided to alternate the layout of my book designs, changing the template from portrait to Landscape to see which lay out worked best for my book cover designs. I started off with this primary photo within a script, which I felt the photo affects did not look as well as they could do with this photograph. However I liked the textures of the back page (left hand page) In this Initial design.

Keeping the left hand design the same as the initial design I began to work with the front cover, blending an Initial design in my Journal with this concept of ‘old’ keeping the colour scheme minimal. To and extent I felt this worked better then the initial idea, however It was starting to become crowded and to improve this I think the opacity should be changed to a lower setting, and background around the prominent figure should be blended better, as the typography in this is blended into the design.

Although the front cover was not working, I decided it would be easier to tell what would work better, If their was a design on the back cover, and so I began to create a simplistic back cover. The reason I wanted it to be minimal and simplistic was because book covers consist of a ‘blurb’ and this I knew needed to be clear and accessible to read in order for the book to sell. And people too pick it up from the shelve among other books.

I decided to keep the theme of the trees, and the concept of the original story portrayed on the front of the book cover, on the back so the design fitted together and linked onto both sides of the book.. I feel at this point in the development stage of a possible book cover outcome, that the design was coming together, and working well, however the composition of the front cover, still didn't seem to be working as well as it could.

As soon as I had the basic design back cover, I added the blurb of the story, which I had created myself earlier in my design development process. My design was now beginning to look like a book cover, however I still thought this as an outcome design was still weak and could be improved, due to composition, and the photography, and textures I had used. Although it portrayed the concept of ‘old’ something not used in previous existing Snow White book covers.

As I know had a background design, that although simplistic worked well, I decided to reinvent the front cover, to fit the use of minimalism, and simplistic touch. I feel this front cover is already working better then the others I have tried with this design, due to the composition.

This is my basis outcome, for which development from my initial design, however I am missing stylistic influences, and I still feel this design can be improved.

Luca Molnar, is a digital artist that works in this style, and as I was missing a stylistic influences, I decided to incorporate his techniques into this design development.

Using my stylistic influence of Luca Molnar adding colour into the concept of old’ here I began to show the contrast between old and new and contempory between both concepts.
