// philosophy & journey At the beginning of my architectural study, I attempted to create my own architectural style, but often found myself lost in the dark. Gradually, I found that architecture language is not something that you can create out of thin air, rather it should be extracted from history. ‘Good artists copy, great artists steal’. What should we ‘steal’? In addition to the field of architecture, art, film, philosophy and science can all become the source of inspiration. PHILOSOPHY

In recent years, I became interested in philosophy. I am really fascinated by some of the brilliant philosophers, especially when they discuss about the relationship among human, politics and society. These theories and thoughts not only indicate the sources of inspiration and historical background of today’s architecture, but also could guide us towards the future.

JOURNEY

Architecture should not only be an expression of certain architectural language, rather I believe now that it should be about the journey of people walking through the buildings, understanding the relations between functions and circulation, light and time, colour and material, scale and space, building and surround environment. All these factors influence architectural quality significantly. In my architectural career I will strive to move the users with poetic architecture.

CINEMA OF REMEMBRANCE

Art & Culture Community Infrastructure Graduate Thesis Melbourne [AU] │ february - june 2014 personal project

The rapid distribution of film on all kinds of devices now allows you to watch films anytime, anywhere. Viewers who go to ‘the movies’ are less worried about the film itself but what else it has to offer such as going into town, meeting with friends and eating in restaurants. My thesis design for a new Design Hub with Cinema, Art House & Film School Complex explores the sensual experience of film and its relationship to a dynamic architecture. The scheme comprises a major new arts and heritage project, designed to provide the Australia with a unique, world class facility for the enjoyment and appreciation of film/television culture. 01

I propose a Film Festival Cinema complex especially adapted to showcase Film Festivals. Its design is different from the conventional cinema. The aisles are wide to allow the free flow of movement of people form one event to another as well as allowing the space to be utilized allows the viewer to truly experience the film making process.

North Art Precinct Street Type & Boundary First is the most important, the street type and boundary. Different from South Bank, North Melbourne is quite old industrial district and with amount of heritage buildings. Street is also quite narrow with tram line and not possible to extension. However, the heritage also brings more opportunities for tourism. So based on the existing heritage and important places, I choose the place which connects to city. And plan the three main streets, Victoria St, Elizabeth St and Swanston St as the boundaries of precinct, because they all contains tram line which can bring people in and naturally become the end of precinct. And traffic of rest of streets in precinct will be controlled which make pedestrians feel more comfortable.

Refer to South Bank Art Precinct facilities and institutions, I design North Art Precinct which is basically similar. The most difference is North Melbourne Art Precinct facilities will be more open and free, which is more suitable to the low income artists and students. Based on the North Melbourne functions research, I pointed out the existing Community Infrastructures and potential site which include development pending site, old factory warehouses and factories. Link organisations of potential sites with existing organisations. And my next part design will focus on the CUB site, which will be most important and main landmark in this area.

POPULATION AND DEMOGRAPGY With expansion of Melbourne City, the residential population will be increasing to 22,000, twice amount of existing now. Half of them born overseas and speaks another languages other than English at home. Majority people is around 16 to 44, which means they are either students or the professional. Moreover it seems to be that they are living alone or strangers who shared home with them. 09

film school extension The film school is major component added to the program, intersecting the synergy arena to create mitigation between opportunity for ideas and conflicts to collide thus becoming a catalyst for social engagement and collaboration. This experience allows the students to experience the live cinema and theater while projecting the film school to the public. Event Amalgamated Holdings (Event Cinemas), in late-2010, said its cinemas were in ‘mature markets with limited growth and expansion opportunity’. Village Roadshow told shareholders in November 2012 that theme parks, not cinemas, were the company’s ‘new foundation business’.

temporary village for 2016 melbourne Olympic Games Studio: Design a Transformable Architectural Style Ballarat [AU] │ july - november 2012 personal project

Melbourne has won the right to host the 2016 Olympic Games. As in 1956, the rowing will be held on lake wendouree,. In Ballarat, where the rowing team will be housed in their own mini village. The world flocked to Ballarat in the 1850s insearch of gold. Today you can still discover gold everywhere you travel around Ballarat and its historic villages. It’s where history comes to life. The new Olympic Village will improve local economy and it will become the new ‘Golden Mine’.

This Village will comprise of 1400 residents for the 16 Day Event. The amenities provided for the participants include a dining hall, gym, commercials, medical and offices. As with all olympic villages design in tent should focus on post games transformation, and how best to accommodate a future program through a master plan. THE RUSH IS STILL ON ...

The structure is flexible. However no matter how the function interior is changed, the structure was still permanent. The obvious structure become the sign of the building. And the external structure can provide the most efficient using interior. As a river through the site, when the sun set, the golden sun light reflect on the surface of river. It looks light the golden in the river, reflected the local history ‘Golden Rush’ The beautiful phenomenon central courtyard provides more communication opportunity for the residents and visitors.

temporary village for 2016 melbourne Olympic Games Studio: Design a Transformable Architectural Style Ballarat [AU] │ july - november 2012 personal project

After Olympic Games, the temperate Village will be designed to transform to the Ballarat University Engineer Campus, which include Education Facilities, Student Accommodation, Private Apartment, Boutique Hotel and a small train station. First detail the brief function and draft locate new facilities into existing one. Obviously, the front part transferred to three functions, Offices, Main Campus, Commercial. Then fill in the different system and design the circulation by the new function system. And Olympic Accommodation which is three tower building at the back will be transferred to the three different types of residents, student accommodations, private apartments and a boutique hotel. 15

Due to the flexible structure, the front part will be re-range to meet the floor area requirements. And remove part of temperate slabs and place new slabs. Based on the function, designed the new facade which made by colour PVC material, because of budget and installing easily. The back tower of student accommodations will be designed based on existing athletes’ ones. The front desk of boutique hotel will be created in the foyer on the ground level which is separate from the student accommodation entrance. The hotel public space, such as cafe and gym, will be placed on the top two levels of tower to havethe best view of Ballarat. The apartment tower will be isolate from Campus. It will have its own pedestrian pavement and drive way in order to provide more privacy. Plan will be redesigned, so replace all interior wall to have more suitable living space for local residents in village. All three tower will have opportunities to install the colour PVC panel to protect from sunlight in Ballarat.

Tower External Structure System The strucutre of accomdation building was the external structure frames which was easy to refunction and max. using the building interiors space. It is suitable to the transparent requirement.

Room types of apartment will refer to the Le Corbusier’s Marseille Modernist Residential Housing, which is two stories and with both south and north face room, cross ventilation and each floor is include some public space for residents. And I designed a ventilation system which can make the cross ventilation more efficient and comfortable.

Facade of Apartment Overview The Ballarat Boutique Hotel was located above the secondary student accomdations in order to have the lake and mountain view. But the hotel entrance and lift was septrated from the student accomdations’s. And the top two level was designed for the hotel restaurant, swiming pool and gym. And the resting holl was placed on each two levels . The types of hotel rooms were include the singles, double and twin share. The main student accomdations have the nice shared communcation courtyard and dining room in the centre of building on each level to provide the chance for the student social and touch the local environment. And sun light can come through to every courtyard.

Fish House is designed based on the works and design philosophies of the post modernism architect, Frank Gehry. Precedents from this master became integral to the design process and very much influenced the outcome – form, materials and façade that resembles Maggie’s Center. Through hundreds of times sketch and modeling, every single curve and line is considered and tested. The whole group of building just like a nice piece sculpture work sitting on the site adjacent the Yarra River. Walk on the different ways of village, they will bring you completely different experience. The shining roof and original timber structure all let you feel the remembrance of boat factories and site history. Such a wonderful place to spend with families during weekends.

EXTENT OF INVOLVEMENT

REQUIREMENT AND PROGRAM

• North T1 architectural design is based on existing master plan of URC, which has the following key points: The forecasted aviation demand by 2025, passenger throughput 42MAP, cargo throughput 550,000 tons, an¬nual flights 338,700; by 2040, passenger throughput 60MAP. Construction area is set as north T1 280,000 m2, GTC 125,000 m2 (incl. indoor garage 75,000 m2), design scale tuning range is ±5%. 27

DESIGN RESPONSE

Airport • The most important design of airport is form. Roof deisgn was converted the factors of local environment include wind, sun and snow factors into a couple of mathematical formulas. Each module was not folded randomly and purposelessly but underpinned by the complicated and scientific mathematical formula as well as the characteristics of local environment. • As a landmark of Xinjiang, the new terminal needs to express regional customs. The interior is the most suitable part of the building to explore this aspect. Arcade and fringe pattern are inspired from the interiors of mosques to symbolize a vernacular culture within the airport. The resulting arcades become a modern interpretation by filleting clustered piers and slanting beams representing the arcades. The triangle light collecting panels become reinterpretations of fringe pattern. GTC The purpose of Synthesized Traffic Centre is to solve the complex connections between the dif¬ferent transportation networks leading to and from the airport hall. The following are our ideas: • Separate the various modes of arrival and departure (pedestrian, taxi, coach, metro and private vehicles) from one another. •Public transport is the primary circulation mode. •Separating the large amount of passengers arriving and leaving the airport. •Control the passengers’ walking distance. •Design by functions, and achieve a more ergonometric design. •Reasonable commercial design, which not only can service the passengers but also increase the income of airport. •Space design needs to relate to the circulation, which can guide people. • This project was a one month duration. • The client need two schemes for the future transform. Both need to imporve the old hotel functions to suit for the new customers services. The design had to respond to the height limit regulated by the city with respect to the monument in front of the site. 29

REQUIREMENT AND PROGRAM

• This project was a one month duration competition. • This project had complex requirements to respond to --- such as connection to an underground subway system, integration of a bus terminal, separate office, residential and shopping retail entrance. • The design had to respond to the height limit regulated by the city with respect to the monument in front of the site. •The program area requirements of office retail and commercial had to be reached with no compromise.

DESIGN RESPONSE

•The retail shops all have valuable street frontage. This creates a lively shopping atmosphere and helps retailers maximize profits. •The entrances of the office and residential towers were AERIAL VIEW discrete and have been blended seamlessly into the podium. •There are two main atriums in the design. They both serve as a focal point around which circulation takes place. •The atrium for the retail section helps visitors visually connect and orient themselves within the space. •The atrium in the residential section brings in green gardens at different levels with triple height spaces. The atrium is also opened towards the east. This brings in soft morning light during the day. This gives residents a pleasant experience just before entering their apartments. • Every apartment has a balcony. This helps in the salability of each unit. •The gradual twist and shape of the tower and podium is inspired from a ship. This imagery was drawn from the naval dock yards located close to the site. • This new green and environmental friend house was designed for the renowned Australian printmaker, David Frazer. • The program and structure will be flexible for future extension. • Living space should be considered the privacy between kids and parents. • The house outlook should blend with its surroundings. • Exist flash flooding, extreme heat and fire issues.

DESIGN RESPONSE

• We used recycled timber and brick as main facade material. And others we used local materials as much as possible. • We actually designed two stages for clients, which include the proposal to build now and 5 years later. And all structure system is installed at first stage to save budget in next extension. • In the plan, we designed two separated zone for both kids and parents. And some detail removal wall to make the living space more flexible. • We made physical model and took amount of site images to find the best shape and outlook to make the house blend with its beautiful surroundings. • Energy efficiency was a high consideration given the extreme winters and summers in Castlemaine. And the exterior wall and roof was heavily insulated to create a complete thermal barrier to external temperatures.

• This project is about renovating a local church school to Logan Studio Office and living apartment. • Keep the facade outlook and street view. • Design a liveable space based on the existing structure and ceiling height. • Consider the issue of serious noise from the main street. • Consider energy efficiency, especially extremely cold in winter. • Work out steps of processing renovation in existing building.

DESIGN RESPONSE

• Depend on existing situation, design the best proposal to meet living and commercial requirements. • Referred some renovation churches cases, design suitable and dramatic foyer and living space. • Keep facade and only replace window glass to double one. And create the fence with beautiful courtyard to protect the noise and improve the privacy. • Energy efficiency was a high consideration given the extreme winters and summers in Castlemaine. And the exterior wall and roof was heavily insulated to create a complete thermal barrier to external temperatures.

We are asked to renovate a fragment of BK City (TU Delft Architecture Faculty). And the new design should be a low-energy building which is include new structure, new façade, and new climate concept. My design is a new wind tower system. A wind tower is a tradi-8 tional Persian architectural element to create natural ventilation in buildings. And it has been used in many countries, especially Egypt. Do lots of research on traditional wind tower, and try to use new materials and techniques to improve it and better suit to the Netherland environment and architectural language.

The strategy is using the existing staircase tower. Since the fragment only exists one stair tower at the end of fragment. The 12 natural ventilation system will be hardly working in the whole fragment, and the size of air movement quantity is not totally enough. Also the system will be too much complex and ventilation might not be work with so much turning point.13So instead, build the couples of small tower next to the fragment. In order to keep the building’s monumental, use the same brick structure as the part of continue external facade. The temperature of inlet air need to maintain, therefore the tower should be well insulated by a high thermal mass layer between brick and concrete. And the second question is how to design wind tower which air can be sucked both in and out in the same time. The tower is separated into two parts without any gap between. And the inlet tube is sitting in the middle of tower and made by the double layers of tube with air gap insulation, which maintain the income air temperature. The rest of space become the outlet ventilation zone. Therefore when in the windy day, first the indoor air will suck out through the outlet zone and provide the lower pressure inside. Then the outside air starts to transfer into building through the inlet tube to balance the pressure difference. The natural ventilation circulation is built. Since on the 2nd level, the original building form is only attach on the bottom part. I designed a skylight which can be opened to fix this situation but keep the same form of building.

Summer Climate Situation 1. High pressure outside, suck the interior air out through the vent. 2. To keep the pressure balance, air outside is sucked into the tube. 3. The inlet air temperature is reduced through the cooling pipes. 4. High temperature water is reduced by using the Geothermal energy. 5. Bioclina system provides the cooling air by the cold water inside the pipes from floor and wall. 6. The HVLS Fan can provide more climate system efficiency.
