Mobridge Riverfront Masterplan Mobridge, SD A comprehensive planning, architectural, and infrastructural master plan across 30 acres of city owned Lake Oahe waterfront, combining a series of incremental 'big ideas' with smart growth strategies. The scheme calls for interventions at various scales, highlighting the extension of the existing city grid, and providing new retail, commercial, residential, and recreational areas. Main Street has been extended into the former rail yards to capitalize on waterfront views and development opportunity. This project was given a 2013 Merit Award by the American Institute of Architects South Dakota Chapter. It represents efforts that combine teaching, community outreach, and professional practice. Mobridge was the first partner city of DoArch Public Works. 'The number of unexecuted and unrealized urban master plans could be stacked from the floor to ceiling of this space, mostly because they tend to be proscriptive rather than visionary. The Mobridge Plan avoids this. Instead it lays out eight grand projects that can be undertaken individually, over time, [and] the success of the master plan does not rely on every piece of the puzzle being put into place.' From the AIASD Jury comments.

RESEARCH & CREATIVE WORK DoArch Public Works
Urbanism and Community The Big Model and other ways of combining teaching and scholarship DoArch Public Works was initiated as coursework for first year design students, assigned to catalog, document and build the 'big model' of a current partner community. These efforts have led to various types of outreach and design opportunities, including housing, public space, and master planning. Documented research includes a taxonomy of small cities across the state, compared through geography, economy, culture, and architecture. above: The Big Model of Huron, SD. Multiple layers compare existing fabric to the initial, planned city grid. below left: Profile model of Milbank, SD. Two partner communities stand in sharp contrast with regard to cultural and housing conditions in South Dakota. Webster enjoys steady economic growth while Wagner struggles, often attributed to its 'bi-cultural' population of white and Yankton Sioux. Housing remains problematic across the entire state for many reasons, however. This research was initiated as another combined teaching and outreach project; proposals for increasing the variety of housing types and means of delivery began as a student assignment and public charette.

RESEARCH & CREATIVE WORK South Dakota Passive Housing Initiative
PH01:BRK Passive House 01: Brookings, SD PH01:BRK is a student and faculty designed certified PHIUS+ passive house, the first in a self-sustaining program for research, teaching, and development. The house is a 2000sf 3BR scheme, sited in an established and walkable neighborhood. It is the first of its kind in many regards: the first custom passive and net-zero house in South Dakota, first to utilize solar PV (planned installation spring 2019) in Brookings, and the first example of new infill housing development in Brookings. Collaboration with SDSU Electrical Engineering, the SD Housing Development Authority, and many industry partners continues. Student involvement occurs in the house design, fabrication of components and mock-ups, energy modeling, site research, and a host of professional and performative tasks. The project has also unveiled possibilities for community engagement, outreach, and new approaches for the regional home building industry. The South Dakota Passive Housing Initiative is funded by an $800,000 grant from the Governor's Office of Economic Development. It integrates the professional architecture curriculum with hands-on design, construction, evaluation and scholarship using Passive Housing technologies and certification strategies. This ongoing program has completed the first design and construction cycle with PH01:BRK, and design on the second house was completed in Fall 2018. Additional opportunities for development in Brookings and at SDSU have also presented themselves. Performance monitoring will track all energy usage and generation, interior environment, utility costs, and more. Construction industry research will track and compare material and labor costs, with future projects designed for affordability and using alternative, pre-fabricated envelope systems.

TEACHING PORTFOLIO / WORK BY STUDENTS Comprehensive Design Studio
Comprehensive Design Studio Comprehensive (or Integrated) Design Studio continues to evolve as an upper level and/or graduate studio in every professional program. The studio balances the inventive desires of the student with the pragmatic outcomes required in practice, mixing a complex program with building systems, code analysis, and material assemblies. The images shown here represent a small fraction of the student work produced over twenty semesters of teaching this studio. The teaching strategy depends on a comparatively high level of production, mixing physical models (concept, massing, whole building, assembly detail, framing), architectural drawing (equivalent to a design development set), imaging, and diagramming. An increasing reliance on using diagrams to reveal process, assembly, components, and building systems, has been evidenced in this studio. Likewise, the pairing of Comprehensive Studio with supplemental courses (media, professional practice, and/or building technology) has always been part of the curricular sequence.

SimCity: Denver 2059 (presented on this page) was offered as an advanced urban design and hybrid programming studio which generates creative ways to imagine the future of cities. The student group was split into role-playing identities, half as 'advocates' and the other half 'developers'. The site of a single square mile of valuable yet underutilized, single story industrial space near the city center became the gridded 'game-board,' while the 'game-play' required deal-making, negotiation, establishing a citycode, agreement on increased density, the introduction of infrastructure, and many other 'real-life' design processes. The resulting hybrid building programs require the combination and manipulation of form plus an ability to research and synthesize factors unusual for the design studio. Economic, demographic, political and construction industry 'realities' have wrestled the task of imagining the program of both the building and the city from the professionals charged with designing it.

TEACHING PORTFOLIO / WORK BY STUDENTS Building Workshops
Building Workshops Building, fabrication, and technology coursework can supplement the studio in creative and pragmatic ways alike. The most successful workshop seminars are focused and carefully defined in scope. The student design happens within a narrow and precise set of material or representational constraints, unlike the studio, which intentionally offers a broad range for exploration. The images here offer some results of these building workshops. Each semester specifies an assembly (tensile structure, basic wall mock-ups), and/or a material (plywood, thermoplastics). Exercises are short and build to a final group project. Additional outcomes include student introduction to hands-on use of tools, full scale assembly, collaboration, and detail drawing. top row: Exercises and prototypes in the Tensile Workshop and Plywood Workshop. center: Final student installations: an entry screen of molded acrylic; a 70-foot long linear tensigrity experiment; a parametric cardboard canopy in studio. bottom rows: Beginning students assembling an array of full-size wall mock-ups.

TEACHING PORTFOLIO / WORK BY STUDENTS Beginning Design Studio
Beginning Design Studio Beginning studio has always been a balance of teaching foundational media skills, formal and spatial relationships, and basics in program and use. This approach is 'making-intensive', encouraging learning through craft and understanding the limits of materials, components, and fasteners. The range of projects, in terms of scope, duration, collaboration, material, drawing, and composition is almost without limit. My approach has been an emphasis on space and form, establishing a basic toolbox or kit-of parts, narrowing in on a relationship and developing a critical method for analysis. The projects shown here are models from only a small sample of the many beginning studios to select from. The facing page shows examples from a variation on the classic nine-square grid problem. A 3x3 building grid is positioned in a 5x5 site, introducing continuous spaces and overlapping program. A finite kit-of-parts (planes, pedestals) is given to define the rooms at a smaller scale. Color is added as an overlay, either to reinforce grids or to establish secondary systems. top series: Stages of the design for a single family residence. center: Example projection drawing and final section drawing. below: Relief studies, mid-process, leading to a final proposal combining site, program, and technique. facing page: The nine-square grid variation. Sample plans, elevations, sections, and models.

SELECTED PROFESSIONAL PROJECTS Urbanism & Community
Landscape City Dallas, TX Landscape City is an urban, energy net-zero proposal which posits that dwelling in a large environment can still maintain community and neighborhood ecology. It embraces indeterminacy, overlapping program, and diversity of occupation & production to animate a complex architecture and supporting infrastructure. The vitality and possibility of sequences, events and program mix together in a prototype of urbanism and sustainability. Four iconic yet disparate landscapes, Street, Park, Wetland, and Forest, are identified as community, infrastructure, and economic drivers. The proposal was made for the Dallas Re:Vision competition. BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN CONNECTION TO BIKE-PATH SHARED DRIVE LANE BETWEEN LOT 9 & LOT 10
An eight-acre educational campus surrounding a pedestrian plaza was proposed for this emerging, exurban site. A wetland forms the western edge and is preserved as a strolling area, taking advantage of mountain views. Additional regional connections are made using transit stops and bike paths to encourage alternate transportation. Three new classroom buildings are designed to minimize bulk, each focusing on both the central plaza and western views.

Carson Farms is a ten-acre infill and phased development, the western half planned using straight residential zoning, and the eastern half mixing various housing types, a clubhouse, and a community green. A total of eleven dual-family units and twelve townhouses are shown. In addition, a new senior-living facility is proposed as a compliment to an existing assisted-living complex. The site borders an active rail line, and is adjacent to a recreation area and bike trail along Ralston Creek.

Cleveland Residence Denver, CO A remodel and extension of a mid-century modern house, the plan opens up public spaces and kitchen while adding a garage and bedroom suite. The material palette expands upon the painted brick and flat roofs of the original house, adding zinc highlights and clerestory windows. Clear finish Douglas fir and custom painted steel courtyard doors pick up on other subtle color accents. A new entry and interior stair ties the new work to the original design.

Sustainable construction techniques and pre-fabrication were necessary as a reality for the remote site without access to public utilities. Building systems include a SIP roof, ICF lower level exterior walls, and prefabricated framing and sun-shade construction. Electrical power is generated using roof mounted PV panels, supplemented with a remote, propane backup generator. Heating is a combination of radiant flooring and a ducted, woodburning fireplace. Wildfire mitigation including treeclearing is required, as is an aggressive revegetation & planting plan.

The Harvey Residence is an entirely off-grid house in the mountains of Boulder County. The ten-acre site provides uninterrupted views of the Front Range and Rocky Mountain National Park. The house is sited amongst large granite rock outcroppings. A swale between two of them frames a protected entry, compressed between an outcropping which projects into the house. The entry level contains the master bedroom suite, while the upper level contains the public spaces and a wraparound deck. Design inspiration came from mid-century Japanese modern houses.

Carlson Residence Boulder, CO The residence is a remodel and second floor addition to a 1950s suburban ranch. The house utilizes multiple building materials, including corrugated steel, felt paper, concrete and stucco. An open interior plan increased the usable space without adding to the footprint. The lower floor is open through the kitchen, and the upper floor is a loft that serves as an office, studio and master suite. Mountain views to the south are unobstructed from the upper balcony. Formally, the house is comprised of three “L-shaped wings, one existing, one horizontal, and one vertical, linked by an open steel stair which defines the house entry. Lake Hermann Passive House Madison, SD A new house designed to achieve PHIUS certification is located on the western edge of Lake Hermann outside of Madison, SD. The strategy combines an ICF lower level with SIP construction above. Two out buildings create a series of outdoor rooms and an entry court, establishing a sequence that builds to lake views from the main floor living area. The house combines a vernacular, farmhouse aesthetic of stone and board & batten with contrasting, minimal interiors. With Robert Arlt.

North Street Residence Boulder, CO A multi-phased remodel and addition to a 1950s house includes a second story master suite and a detached two-car garage with an upstairs loft. The design expands the composition of the existing, symmetrical house. Low living spaces are raised, and the upper level contrasts the horizontal massing with a vertical, unbalanced yet centered volume. The site slopes sharply towards the street, and a formal landscape design ties the two buildings together with a private, terraced yard.
