“While my initial reason for doing postgraduate study was promotion, as I progressed through the MBA it opened my eyes to a whole world of opportunities. “It also gave me transferable skills. I had them during my police career – finance knowledge, communication and negotiation – but the MBA really brought them out to me as part of my personal skill set. “The MBA always got me a foot in the door – not just in terms of a piece of paper, but you learn a lot about yourself and you gain knowledge about the rest of the world.” Stuart Taylor - Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Choose your path What’s right for you? We know the reasons you want to return to study vary – and there are various ways you can make it happen at Charles Sturt University!

Single subject study Want to start small? Dip your toe into university study? Studying a single subject can be a great way for you to make a successful return. Consider a subject that will help boost your career. Stay ahead of the pack by studying a contemporary issue in your field. Be among the first to study in areas everyone is starting to talk about. Sign up for a subject that fascinates or intrigues you. We have postgraduate single subjects in everything from climate change to customer behaviour. We can help you learn all about why employers have turned their focus to soft skills and how you can develop yours. Best of all, most of our single subjects can be studied online – fitting right in with the rest of your busy life – and they’ll count toward a related full degree if you decide to pursue it later.

Graduate certificate Short and sweet. In a relatively small amount of time your graduate certificate can hand you some big gains. Pick up advanced subject knowledge while hopping onto the path for further postgraduate study.

Graduate diploma Got a little more time to invest in your future? Then a graduate diploma might be right up your ally. The next step in postgraduate study, it’s a great way to build on your study and head towards the right level of qualification for you. (And you can tackle some grad dips even if you don’t hold a bachelor’s degree – as long as you have relevant work experience.)

Master’s degree When you study a master’s by coursework you’ll set yourself apart from the employment crowd and maintain your competitive edge. A master’s is an invaluable boost to your industry knowledge – you’ll benefit from critically analysing your chosen subject.

Higher Degree by Research Research at Charles Sturt University changes lives. From individuals and communities to national projects and international collaborations, our research focuses on how collaboration can make the world a better place. And you could be leading the charge. Why not add new knowledge to your area of interest by doing original research, either in a master’s by research or a PhD.

We’re flexible So you can maintain balance We hear you. Postgraduate study is a big commitment and we know you’ve already got really important responsibilities that will always need your attention. That’s why virtually all Charles Sturt’s postgraduate courses are available for online study. Fit your study around work and family – you’re in control of your study load. Start with one subject per study session or take on more to fast-track your degree. It’s up to you. And remember, your online study adapts to your lifestyle. If life throws you a curve ball or your circumstances change, most courses will enable you to adjust your study load to suit. You can change how much study you take on if your circumstances change. You could drop down to one or two subjects for a session and then take on more when your life allows. We put flexibility at the core of your studies, so that your learning is as effective as it can be. As a general guide, for each subject you undertake you’ll need to set aside between 10 and 12 hours a week. Your time will be spent on a mix of lectures and tutorials (which happen live and can also be recorded to watch again later), readings, research, writing assignments or preparing for exams. Everything you need is right at your fingertips – with lectures, tutorials, discussions, readings, assignment submission and support all online. (But don’t worry, we also provide help over the phone and in person). Technology not a friend of yours? No worries. IT Support is available 24/7, 365 days a year – and it’s just a phone call away. Easy.

“When I initially wanted to undertake my MBA, I did quite a lot of research. The reason I chose Charles Sturt was because they were so flexible and had a huge range of subjects on offer. “A lot of other unis market themselves as super flexible, but I found that wasn’t actually the case. The fact that Charles Sturt’s MBA was 100 per cent online was a game-changer for me.” Laura Cohalan - Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Go your own way It’s your choice Online Attend lectures live online or watch recordings at a more convenient time. Interact with your teachers and fellow students during live tutorials and on dedicated message boards and forums. Access support and services online, and manage your assignments there, too. Tap into library resources – whether downloading digital resources or ordering books to be posted to you, free of charge.

On campus Some courses are also offered on campus. If you’re near one of our campuses in Australia’s best regional centres, you could attend lectures and tutorials in person. If you have the capacity and want to shake things up, you could even live on campus.

Mixed mode A little from column A and a little from column B can often work best so at Charles Sturt, we offer mixed mode study in selected courses. Study some subjects online and, for those where you’d benefit from more personal interaction, head to campus. Or maybe you’d like to move to on-campus study during your last session or the final year of your course to get more personalised, intensive instruction at crunch time.

Maintaining your balance Helping to have study-life harmony It’s all about balance. Study will help your career and let you pursue your passion. But it may all be for nought if the rest of your world crumbles around you. Dr Shaunagh Foy is a registered psychologist and a student counsellor at Charles Sturt University (as part of our student support network). The good doctor has three tips for maintaining study-life harmony: plan ahead as much as possible; do something for your studies every day; and get your family involved.

Planning Running a household, organising your family or holding down a job or two means you already know that proper planning is an essential life skill. It helps you prioritise, juggle responsibilities and get things done. Planning is just one of your many life skills that will enable you to efficiently and effectively tackle your postgraduate studies with Charles Sturt. You’ll become an old hand at organising family activities to give you a bit more time around assignments or exams, planning out your reading in a diary so you can keep track of your progress and knowing what time of day best suits you to study. Our tip? Get into the habit of reviewing the subject material as soon as it’s available online. Many of our subjects release required reading, assignment topics and session schedules up to two weeks before the subject actually starts. So, you can get a head start and attend your first tutorial with confidence.

Small steps The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. So said ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu. And he was correct. Doing something towards your course every day will help you stay on top of things and dial down your stress. Taking small steps each day – even if it’s something administrative like checking that the format of your essay references is correct – will help you see that you’re making progress.

Buy-in Once you have decided to make your next move count – and begin postgraduate study with us – get your family on board. Discuss why you want to study with your partner, children and extended family. Tell them your hopes and dreams and how study will help you achieve your career or life goals. And then explain the study expectations and how they will influence family life (in terms of having dedicated time to study when, for instance, you might need to say no to playing with the children). Another tip? Don’t forget your friends and employer. The more buy-in you get from all your networks the more support you receive – from your very first step until the last triumphant stride you take across the stage to officially receive your new qualification.

Enjoy real returns A tangible boost Uni study can be costly and we know that makes it hard to decide whether to invest your time and money in further qualifications. At Charles Sturt University, we don’t want the cost of study to hold you back. That’s why we’re making education affordable for everyone. And we can help you navigate the government finance initiatives that can help you pay for your studies. And there is more good news. The future appears bright – in terms of employment and salary hopes – for those who complete postgraduate studies. The QILT Graduate Outcomes Survey 2018 discloses that “further study generally leads to improved salary outcomes in addition to improved employment outcomes”. The survey also notes that “in 2018, the median salary of undergraduates employed full-time was $61,000 in comparison with $83,300 earned by postgraduate coursework graduates and $90,000 earned by postgraduate research graduates”.

“The uni gave me a great platform to learn in a safe environment, and provided a good stepping stone into my career.” Tammy O’Connor - Master of Midwifery

A helping hand Ease the financial pressure Did you know we offer more than $3m in scholarships at Charles Sturt University? Just think what you could achieve when you don’t have to stress about how you’re going to afford uni. We offer a number of scholarships to postgraduate students to help take the pressure off and make your uni experience that much easier. But it’s important not to rule yourself out of the running – remember, you don’t need to be a great essay writer to be awarded a scholarship. Many scholarships get left on the shelf simply because people assume they won’t get one, so they don’t even apply. And don’t assume financial hardship doesn’t apply to you. It’s simply about those finding it difficult to provide for themselves or their family while studying. If you’re working to support yourself and this cuts into your study time, that’s financial hardship. The secret is to tell us why it’s tough. Don’t think it’s too hard or not worth the effort to apply. It’s not as hard or as time consuming as you think – 75 per cent of our applicants say it’s easy! So, why not throw your hat into the ring? 
