Hollywood Does Charleston 20 films and TV shows filmed in the Lowcountry GUEST COLUMN | BY KEVIN YOUNG CONTRIBUTING WRITER (2009-2017) Not long ago, it was uncommon for Hollywood to come a-calling to Charleston. That has changed a bit. Since the City Paper’s birth in the 9-7, there have been quite a few movies and TV shows that have been made in our beautiful city, thanks to its unique personality (or what’s left of it). Here, in no particular order, are 20 productions that we’d like to randomly mention: The Hunley: We have got a lot of history here in this town. Like that well-known story of the crew of the manually propelled submarine CSS Hunley during the siege of Charleston of 1864. The heroism of the nine men on board was the focus of the Donald Sutherland/Armand Assante TNT movie. The Tempest: A pre-Grey’s Anatomy/postBride of Chucky Katherine Heigl gallivanted about as a Civil War-era Miranda Prosper in this TV movie take on Shakespeare’s classic. Cold Mountain: Once a regular at AC’s Bar And Grill while working on the Pate Brother’s Deceiver, Renee Zellweger returned to Charleston to star in Anthony Minghella’s bloated Civil War romance alongside Jude Law and Nicole Kidman. Dramatic moments and orchestral swells ensued. COLD MOUNTAIN

Leo: Originally shot here under the title Leopold Bloom, this film focused on a pen-pal relationship between an unstable young boy and a man recently released from prison. It didn’t do too well. Still, everyone’s favorite babysitter, Elisabeth Shue, was in it. That’s kinda cool. Army Wives: When Lifetime brought this show to our fair city, it helped cement Charleston as a place in location managers’ scouting itinerary. Over the course of the show’s seven seasons, we followed the lives of the spouses of soldiers fighting abroad. For quite a few years, the cast and crew were a part of the local landscape. Southern Charm: A reality TV series that happened in 2013 and still happens to this day. There isn’t much to add that hasn’t been

said by better writers. Thank you, Bravo. Top Chef: Bravo also homed in our food talents when they decided to focus the majority of their 14th season of the show here with local chefs Emily Hahn and Jamie Lynch as two of the contestants. Padma Lakshmi sightings were a plenty last summer. The Legend of Bagger Vance: In 1999, Charleston was one of many South Carolina locales utilized for this Matt Damon/Will Smith film about a white golfer getting an assist from a mystical black caddy. It was wince-inducing then. It’s wince-inducing now. O: Tim Blake Nelson directed this modern take of Bill Shakespeare’s Othello. Mekhi Phifer and Julia Stiles starred in this retelling which takes place at a prep school that looked strikingly similar to Bishop England. Reckless: Shot throughout downtown, this TV series came and went. For some reason, the story of “a gorgeous Yankee litigator and a Southern city attorney” who “struggle to hide their intense attraction while clashing over a police sex scandal that threatens to implode the city” didn’t last. Vice Principals: Following up their successful Eastbound and Down series, Jody Hill and Danny McBride shot the first two seasons of their comedy about rivals — Neal (McBride) and Lee (the vastly underrated
Walton Goggins) — competing for the same job at a high school throughout Charleston. The second season starts up in September. The Sinner: Having premiered last week, the commercials for this eight-episode series, shot around Summerville, have been everywhere. Jessica Biel stars as a woman trying to figure out why she got stabby. THE SINNER
The Patriot: Future South Park punchline Mel Gibson starred in this 1776-set drama, directed by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day), about a father joining the rebellion after a sadistic British colonel kills his son. The crew chose locations like Cypress Gardens, Middleton Place, and Rock Hill to lend their $100 million period piece some authenticity. continued on page 52

The Corndog Man: While often confused with Wilford Brimley, Noble Willingham is known mostly for being one of Walker, Texas Ranger’s buddies. In the midst of filming the series, he took a break to shoot this uncomfortable low-budget piece. Set in rural South Carolina, The Corndog Man is simply about a redneck boat salesman being terrorized by a man claiming to be his long-lost son. One cameo of note was by a local legend — the late Bryan Seabrook — better known to many as Ms. Africa. Megan Leavey: Based on a true story of Marine Corporal Megan Leavey, the film detailed the relationship between herself and the military combat dog Rex as they went on over 100 missions together during their deployment in Iraq. Charleston was one of six locations in this year’s tearjerker. Mr. Mercedes: Premiering Wed. Aug. 9, this series, based on a Stephen King novel, follows a detective trying to track down a psycho in a Mercedes. Apparently, the master of scary things was out and about, as well, making our city a little less holy. Major League 3: Back to the Minors: In 1997, the RiverDogs were still settling into their new digs at The Joe. In its first year open, the stadium also played a major role in this second (and final) sequel to the funny baseball comedy, Major League. Great
locations, mediocre movie. The underrated Walton Goggins was in this as well. The Notebook: Some movie based on a Nicholas Sparks novel about a poor boy and a rich girl falling in love and said love standing the enduring test of time. Ever heard of it? For a moment, the production overtook parts of King Street. Unfortunately, I don’t think either of the two young leads have ever gone on to anything else of note.
THE NOTEBOOK
Dear John: Partially shot on Sullivan’s Island, this drama involved a blossoming relationship between a soldier named Channing Tatum and a college student named Amanda Seyfried while he is on leave. Yet another Nicholas Sparks romance adapted for the screen starring actors that also faded into obscurity. The Afflicted: In 2010, Kane Hodder (a.k.a. Jason Voorhees of the Friday the 13th series) visited Charleston to make a disturbing horror flick. I just like the fact that Jason Voorhees visited Charleston.

HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THERE WAS ONCE A TIME WHEN MARTHA LOU’S LOOKED CLOSE TO CLOSING
GUEST COLUMN | JEFF ALLEN FOOD CRITIC 2005-2011
Shifting Supper A sobering look at Charleston’s food changes over 20 years There used to be a large oscar fish that held court in a tank too small at the New Moulin Rouge. It sat on the upper reaches of Rutledge Avenue. The proprietors of the joint in the then predominately African American neighborhood gave us hot dogs to feed it. It would damn near clear the tank edge and take a finger off when it got within range. When we discovered the Moulin Rouge, we were amongst a handful of white people who frequented the place. Like much of the rest of that world, the fish is gone. The place no longer hosts the co-owner’s aptly named funk band called the Secrets, who once played an entire impromptu set of James Brown on special request at my wedding reception. Like the Secrets of the New Moulin Rouge, the Charleston they once represented is long gone.

With that city went the other secrets. The back staircase that wound its way up to Charlie’s Little Bar in the dark recesses of the still abandoned Saracenic building on lower East Bay. The red door to Capone’s in what used to be the KGB bar scene at the intersection of King and George Streets. It was a lost scene geared to locals, a party that over the last 20 years moved off to North Charleston and West Ashley. It took with it the people who made it hum. When I first moved to Charleston, the smug locals south of Calhoun Street referred to those north of the demarcation

When we long ago included the Eastside’s Hannibal’s Kitchen in our annual dining guide those same folks south of Calhoun howled in protest for sending them unbeknownst into a “dangerous” area of town. Today you’ll find Hannibal’s crab rice on the prominent Instagram feed of Sean Brock. And in this way, the new “Charleston” was discovered. John T. of cars each day across the street from her office window. Such concern led to concerted efforts at balancing the city’s awareness of our most under-appreciated kitchens. And it was these local food writers and chefs that helped to bolster their constituencies. A year after that letter, I rose early to pick up Ms. Martha Lou from that pink cinder block building and drove her to the opening ceremony of the Wine + Food Festival where she received a long overdue recognition for her efforts to serve the stomachs of Charleston the heritage of its foodways. But we lost a great many kitchens that stood in the developer’s line of fire. The gentrification of the upper peninsula claimed the storied Sunday gospel brunch at Alice’s Fine Foods and the overflowing bowls of butterbeans at Ernie’s Soul Food. If there was a silver lining, the changing demographics destroyed the old “key bars” that dotted the area, private clubs where only white patrons admitted themselves by obtaining a working key to the front door. As Charleston’s national image as a vacation destination shifted, so did its popular food culture, transformed from a mythic representation of the Old South and its plantation lore to a modern reinterpretation that ironically pays more homage to a West African diaspora and recognizes the extraordinary historic sacrifices paid within a city that slaves built. More than anyone, this change was driven by Sean Brock and the vision he collected. His efforts certainly exerted the largest gravity of the last 20 years. When we first reviewed his tenure at McCrady’s, we aptly Jonathan Boncek (Top) /Joshua Curry (Bottom) File Photos titled it “The New Sheriff in Town,” but he paid for the moniker. The Way We Were 20 spaces, 88 F&B concepts BY KINSEY GIDICK, INTERN (2005-2006) MANAGING EDITOR (2014-2016) EDITOR (2016-2017) Over the past 20 years, we’ve seen a lot of businesses come and go — some we loved, some we hated, some we don’t entirely remember (there were a lot of Grand Ma shots in there). So let’s take a tour no tourist would understand, a little walk down Charleston’s real estate memory lane. 275 KING ST. This massive corner spot at King and Wentworth sat empty during the Recession, but before that it was a host of different bars and retail establishments. Banana Joe’s anyone? Pretty sure I left my fake ID there back in ’05. Warehouse Zebo Mandalay Banana Joe’s Biton Pop-up Vineyard Vines 354 KING ST. Part of the appeal of this hidden spot was its secret door connecting it to La Hacienda. But that was just one iteration of the space that’s seen the likes of all kinds of quality watering holes over the years. Radio Room Lola Fluid’s Zanzibar Palmetto’s Burns Alley Tavern
428 KING ST. Before we moved to NoMo (yeah, I said NoMo), CP was sitting pretty on King. The upstairs of what most readers will remember as Joe Pasta has been at least eight different spots since we moved out. The City Paper Office Buddha Bar The Shangri La Club 54 The Living Room Black Cart Compass Joe Pasta Upstairs at JohnKing 306 KING ST. OK, so it hasn’t been half a dozen businesses, but 306 King St. gets honorable mention for the loss of Sharky’s alone. The funky pizza joint wouldn’t recognize King Street if it appeared today and that’s a damn shame. Sharkys Ye Ole Fashioned Ice Cream Tzatziki 102 NORTH MARKET ST. My first recollection of this spot is as O’Hara & Flynns back when it was a three story

Say the words “Hoagie Haven” to a longtime Charlestonian and you’re likely to see them get all dreamy-eyed. The sandwich shop made its home in a few different locations
over the years, but the one most people we talked to remember is at 363 King which also housed ice cream of the future, Dippin Dots in addition to our all-time favorite Charleston restaurant concept, the shortlived Pace’s Pizza Balls. Hoagie Haven Dippin Dots Chinar Indian Mushy Peas (never materialized) Pace’s Pizza Balls 951 FOLLY ROAD Maybe it’s the size of the place or that the parking lot is behind the lot or that the signage is hard to see from the street, it’s hard to pinpoint one problem, but this Folly Road continued on page 70

I blame the finicky appetites of college students for the ever-changing look to 41 George St. It always feels like just when we fall in love with one concept, it goes belly up. Such was the case with perfect paninimakers Modica back in ’09. Of course, we may have played a roll in the closure of one of these spots. This reporter may have written in a Best of Charleston critic pick that a certain Dutch-style fry concept’s name sounded like the results from a gynecological exam. Sorry, Patat Spot. ARIES (March 21-April 19): “To disobey in order to take action is the byword of all creative spirits,” said philosopher Gaston Bachelard. This mischievous advice is perfect for your use right now, Aries. I believe you’ll thrive through the practice of ingenious rebellion — never in service to your pride, but always to feed your soul’s lust for deeper, wilder life. Here’s more from Bachelard: “Autonomy comes through many small disobediences, at once clever, well thought-out, and patiently pursued, so subtle at times as to avoid punishment entirely.” TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Congratulations! I expect that during the next three weeks, you will be immune to what psychoanalyst Joan Chodorow calls “the void of sadness, the abyss of fear, the chaos of anger, and the alienation of contempt and shame.” I realize that what I just said might sound like an exaggeration. Aren’t all of us subject to regular encounters with those states? How could you possibly go so long without brushing up against them? I stand by my prediction, and push even further. For at least the next three weeks, I suspect you will also be available for an inordinate amount of what Chodorow calls “the light of focused insight” and “the playful, blissful, all-embracing experience of joy.” GEMINI (May 21-June 20): The coming days would an excellent time to celebrate (even brag about) the amusing idiosyncrasies and endearing quirks that make you lovable. To get you inspired, read this testimony from my triple Gemini friend Alyssa: “I have beauty marks that form the constellation Pegasus on my belly. I own my own ant farm. I’m a champion laugher. I teach sign language to squirrels. Late at night when I’m horny and overtired I may channel the spirit of a lion goddess named Sekhmet. I can whistle the national anthems of eight different countries. I collect spoons from the future. I can play the piano with my nose and my toes. I have forever banished the green-eyed monster to my closet.” CANCER (June 21-July 22): Your education may take unusual forms during the coming weeks. For example, you could receive crunchy lessons from velvety sources, or tender instructions from exacting challenges. Your curiosity might expand to enormous proportions in the face of a noble and elegant tease. And chances are good that you’ll find a new teacher in an unlikely setting, or be prodded and tricked into asking crucial questions you’ve been neglecting to ask. Even if you haven’t been particularly street smart up until now, Cancerian, I bet your ability to learn from uncategorizable experiences will blossom. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): “If you love someone, set them free,” said New Age author Richard Bach. “If they come back, they’re yours; if they don’t, they never were.” By using my well-educated intellect to transmute this hippy-dippy thought into practical advice, I came up with a wise strategy for you to consider as you re-evaluate your relationships with allies. Try this: Temporarily suspend any compulsion you might have to change or fix these people; do your best to like them and even love them exactly as they are. Ironically, granting them this freedom to be themselves may motivate them to modify, or at least tone down, the very behavior in themselves that you’re semi-allergic to. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): In 1892, workers began building the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York. But as of August 2017, it is still under construction. Renovation has been and continues to be extensive. At one point in its history, designers even changed its architectural style from Neo-Byzantine and Neo-Romanesque to Gothic Revival. I hope this serves as a pep talk in the coming weeks, which will be an excellent time to evaluate your own progress, Virgo. As you keep toiling away in behalf of your dreams, there’s no rush. In fact, my sense is that you’re proceeding at precisely the right rate. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): In accordance with the astrological omens, I hereby declare the next two weeks to be your own personal Amnesty Holiday. To celebrate, ask for and dole out forgiveness. Purge and flush away any non-essential guilt and remorse that are festering inside you. If there truly are hurtful sins that you still haven’t atoned for, make a grand effort to atone for them — with gifts and heart-felt

messages if necessary. At the same time, I urge you to identify accusations that others have wrongly projected onto you and that you have carried around as a burden even though they are not accurate or fair. Expunge them. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): How many countries has the United States bombed since the end of World War II? Twenty-five, to be exact. But if America’s intention has been to prod these nations into forming more free and egalitarian governments, the efforts have been mostly fruitless. Few of the attacked nations have become substantially more democratic. I suggest you regard this as a valuable lesson to apply to your own life in the coming weeks, Scorpio. Metaphorical bombing campaigns wouldn’t accomplish even 10 percent of your goals, and would also be expensive in more ways than one. So I recommend using the “killing with kindness” approach. Be wily and generous. Cloak your coaxing in compassion. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You know about the Ten Commandments, a code of ethics and behavior that’s central to Christianity and Judaism. You may not be familiar with my Ten Suggestions, which begin with “Thou Shall Not Bore God” and “Thou Shall Not Bore Thyself.” Then there are the Ten Indian Commandments proposed by the Bird Clan of East Central Alabama. They include “Give assistance and kindness whenever needed” and “Look after the well-being of your mind and body.” I bring these to your attention, Sagittarius, because now is an excellent time to formally formulate and declare your own covenant with life. What are the essential principles that guide you to the highest good? CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Here’s a definition of “fantasizing” as articulated by writer Jon Carroll. It’s “a sort of ‘in-brain’ television, where individuals create their own ‘shows’ — imaginary narratives that may or may not include real people.” As you Capricorns enter the High Fantasy Season, you might enjoy this amusing way of describing the activity that you should cultivate and intensify. Would you consider cutting back on your consumption of movies and TV shows? That might inspire you to devote more time and energy to watching the stories you can generate in your mind’s eye. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): In 43 cartoon stories, the coyote named Wile E. Coyote has tried to kill and devour the swift-running flightless bird known as the Road Runner. Every single time, Wile E. has failed to achieve his goal. It’s apparent to astute observers that his lack of success is partly due to the fact that he doesn’t rely on his natural predatory instincts. Instead, he concocts elaborate, overly-complicated schemes. In one episode, he camouflages himself as a cactus, buys artificial lightning bolts, and tries to shoot himself from a bow as if he were an arrow. All these plans end badly. The moral of the story, as far as you’re concerned: To reach your next goal, trust your instincts. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You temporarily have cosmic permission to loiter and goof off and shirk your duties. To be a lazy bum and meander aimlessly and avoid tough decisions. To sing off-key and draw stick figures and write bad poems. To run slowly and flirt awkwardly and dress like a slob. Take advantage of this opportunity, because it’s only available for a limited time. It’s equivalent to pushing the reset button. It’s meant to re-establish your default settings. But don’t worry about that now. Simply enjoy the break in the action.

CHARLESTON CITY PAPER 08.09.2017
Loss of radio station 96 Wave: Former 96 Wave personality and City Paper columnist Jack Hunter put it aptly when he wrote about the demise of one-time local institution, 96 Wave, in 2007: “Since 1985, 96 Wave had been an inextricable part of youth culture in the Lowcountry. For many, the station was the soundtrack to living in this city, even if you didn’t always like the music. Like jam bands, Joe Riley, and Byron, 96 Wave has always just been there.” But nothing gold can stay — once the big conglomerates stepped in, the character of radio diminished all over the country and 96 Wave was never the same. Lowcountry native Meghan Redel, who says the station changed her life growing up, remembers the day 96 Wave left the airwaves for good. “It
80
was on a Sunday, when there used to always be the ‘Critic’s Choice’ show. And I turned on the radio and ‘Hey Ya’ by Outkast was playing ...” she says. “But turns out it was a whole different station.” [You can now catch the Critic on 105.5 The Bridge.] 96 Wave Fests: 96 Wave Fests were no joke: David Byrne. Wilco. Ben Folds Five. The Jayhawks. Son Volt. Stone Temple Pilots. CAKE. Tay McNabb, a.k.a. Party Dad, remembers Wave Fest of 1996, when Butthole Surfers headlined. “They opened their set with ‘Pepper’ and then told everyone in the audience who only wanted to hear that song (that is, most of the audience) to fuck off.” Jump, Little Children mania: These guys ‘bout broke the internet when they announced their 10-year reunion a couple years back. Many here and around the region held this hard-to-define band close to their hearts, and Jump’s decision to throw in the towel in 2005 most certainly marked an era’s end. Their final show at Dock Street Theatre (pre-2016 reunion) was chillingly punctuated with the band walking the audience to the Market and playing three final songs. Shovels & Rope on Letterman: Local audiences had been championing the success of first, Cary Ann Hearst, then Hearst and Michael Trent’s project, Shovels & Rope, for too long. A talent so total and pure had to make it, and they did. The duo first appeared on Late Show with David Letterman in October of 2013 (again in 2015). I remember being at Tin Roof, where crowds gathered tearily in front of a projector screen to witness what we all knew was It. They’d made it. They fucking made it!

CLAY SCALES CLOSED THE BELOVED 52.5 RECORDS IN 2010
Closing of 52.5 Records: First at 52.5 Wentworth, then at 75 Wentworth, and finally at 561 King St., 52.5 Records was a local music lover’s staple from 1997-2010. In addition to great records, you could always find a copy of The Onion, comics, and, when at the spacier King Street locale, great live shows. And owner Clay Scales was never the typical record store snob a la High Fidelity and became a friend to many a curious shopper. We sure do miss you, 52.5. Emmy win for Live at Charleston Music Hall: Mark Bryan (Hootie & the Blowfish) and his Chucktown Music Group create and host Live at the Charleston Music Hall, a series filmed for SCETV and aired nationally with PBS. The show features live performances from a long list of talent, interview segments, and scenes from around the city. This year, the series won big at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, taking home a Southeast Emmy Award and making this hometown awfully proud.
Southern Discomfort: Southern Discomfort was a four-hour-plus forum that happened at Redux Contemporary Art Center last fall, during which a lively and honest discussion about access and racism in the local music scene ensued. It was chilling and powerful and, so far, somewhat effective in that several venue owners listened and have since accepted the responsibility of giving more local hip-hop artists a welcoming place to present their art. Kevin Hanley’s Chord & Pedal Holiday Balls: Beginning in 2002 at the old Cumberland’s, Chord & Pedal’s impromptustyle holiday hootenanny featured local musicians — Cary Ann Hearst, Michael Trent, the V-Tones, the Silver Bells, Mechanical River, and much, much more. The show evolved every year, quickly becoming a tradition and bouncing around to other venues, like the new, now-defunct King Street Cumberland’s, the Map Room (also gone), Music Farm, Pour House, Tin Roof, and Charleston Music Hall. Such sweet jubilation. Shrimp Records Family Band surprise: Every time the Shrimp Records folks — Shovels & Rope, Punks&Snakes, Mechanical River, Indianola, Slow Runner, Sadler Vaden, and more — get together, it is an affair to remember. One particularly memorable show occurred the week Vaden was to be married. The crew organized a bachelor party of sorts, bringing the Family Band together for more Pour House hijinks that climaxed when both Jason Isbell (who Vaden plays guitar for) and Kevn Kinney of Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ (Vaden’s former employer) joined the troupe onstage
The Lowcountry Hall of Fame: Michael Davis, owner of Ye Olde Music Shop in Hanahan, first introduced the now-annual Lowcountry Hall of Fame in 2015 as a means to recognize the local scene’s most influential veterans from before 20 years ago — folks many newcomers to the scene may not even know of now. From the Leonard School of Music to the late pianist Tommy Gill to owners of Charleston’s pioneering venue, Myskyn’s, Al Goss and Larry Walker, our musical forefathers are many. The next ceremony and show is slated for October, returning to the Hanahan Ampitheatre. The closing of Myskyn’s: We’ve had a hard time pinpointing if the reign of former venue Myskyn’s falls into the years meant for these lists, 1997-2017 — some say it closed in the mid-’90s, while others recall it lasting slightly longer — but since that venue’s impact on the scene remains, it deserves a place on this list. Ye Olde Music’s Michael Davis told us in 2015, “Truly, the music scene would not be the same without Myskyn’s, and anybody who’s been here a long time will tell you that.” Hootie at the Coliseum: Charleston Jazz Orchestra conductor Charlton Singleton remembers Hootie & the Blowfish’s two-night stand at the North Charleston Coliseum after the release of Cracked Rear View as a pretty big deal. “That was huge,” he says. “A lot of people said that they couldn’t sell them out. Both were sellouts!” Restoration/preservation of A Touch of Class: This Meeting Street nightclub was a regular stop on the R&B-soul-jazz circuit as far back as the ’50s, but was left abandoned, seemingly mid-song, about 20 years ago. Rather than letting the historical space succumb to the fate of many buildings within stumbling distance of the venue and becoming another freakin’ boutique hotel, Palace Hotel co-owner and career-long promoter of funk-R&B acts Taylor Grant preserved it all and opened The Commodore: A Touch of Class last year. The time vault has the same old booths, dance floor, and signage, and Grant even created a framed collage of memories, featuring the likes of Marvin Gaye and James Brown, on the wall. High Water Festival: Shovels & Rope launched their inaugural High Water Festival at Riverfront Park this year. The fest was much more than a kickass lineup of artists — it was a celebration of the Lowcountry that featured Gullah group Ranky Tanky opening for Lucinda Williams plus their beautifully raw performance filmed in the onsite chapel; locally bred acts like Jump, Little Children and Slow Runner took on the big stages; and money was raised for local charities the Green Heart Project, Charleston Waterkeeper, and Water Mission. Quentin Baxter’s Grammy nods: Longtime local musician, producer, and Ranky Tanky percussionist Quentin Baxter has collaborated with national recording artist/
vocalist/composer René Marie for 15 years, and it’s with Marie that Baxter picked up two Grammy Award nominations in recent years. First for his work with the 2013 album I Wanna Be Evil (With Love to Eartha Kitt), and this year he attended the 59th Grammy Awards for his work on Sound of Red, nominated for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Lindsay Holler’s We are the World: We could talk about the killer Women & series created by musicians Lindsay Holler and Hazel Ketchum, but before local lady vocalists began paying homage to the likes of Waits, Cohen, and Parsons, Holler produced lots of other collab shows, like the epic ode to 1985 anthem, “We are the World,” performed by local musicians at a sold-out Tin Roof (later at the PoHo). Unforgettable. Groundhog Day Concert: Another local collaboration with a special place in locals’ hearts is the Groundhog Day Concert produced by Bill Carson, Nathan Koci, and Ron Wiltrout. The tradition began six years ago, and now it’s an anticipated occasion each year to watch about 20 of the city’s most stunningly talented musicians make beautiful sounds together. Working Title at the Plex: Remember Joel Hamilton’s (Mechanical River) former band, the Working Title? Lowcountry native Keating Norris looks back on the band and its show at the now-defunct Plex. “The Plex was literally packed that night and had this edgy feel to it, which at 15 made me feel like the coolest kid ever,” he says. “If I recall correctly, they had already signed a record deal with Universal and it was like everybody wanted to see them before they soared to new heights so that they could say they had been there from the start with the band. When they finally began to play, everyone knew every lyric to their songs. It was more of a sing-a-long than a typical album release where the band is introducing their new songs. I was mesmerized from start to finish.” The passing of Jack McCray: Jack McCray not only wrote about jazz for 20 years for the Post & Courier, but he also co-founded the Charleston Jazz Initiative and the Jazz Artists of Charleston. He was a jazz historian, penning 2007’s 127-page collection of essays and images entitled Charleston Jazz. Most of all, he was widely adored, and his passing in 2011 left the city profoundly saddened but forever gracious for his contributions to local music history.

GUEST COLUMN | BY LORNE CHAMBERS MUSIC EDITOR (2000-2005)
Drive-By Memories How a show at the old Pour House changed my musical life Long before the Pour House was one of Charleston’s premier music venues, it was a humble little bar and sandwich joint in a tiny strip mall along Savannah Highway in the part of West Ashley the city is now desperately trying to get people to call DuWap. This was West Ashley before Voodoo, Home Team, and Tin Roof. There was hardly anyone doing live music then, except for an occasional band at RPub or the Wolf Track Inn down Highway 61. This was West Ashley before Avondale “happened.” Before there was talk of a Whole Foods or revitalization. This was West Ashley before I started West Of. Back then I was the music editor at the Charleston City Paper, and it would be another four or five years before I left that to start West Of, a weekly community newspaper serving what was then viewed as Charleston’s red-headed stepchild but has since become a happening part of town. For the last several years, 1750 Savannah Highway has been home to Hunley’s Tavern, a This had been cozy neighborhood joint with daily lunch specials, the sound I a pretty good jukebox, and a large NASCAR was longing for. crowd. Before that it had a short stint as an Irish pub. But in the early 2000s, when I was at City Indie rockers Paper, it was the original location of the Pour who played loud House, a neighborhood pub and one of the first local bars to have several decent beers on tap. This and with three before the craft beer boom, so if a bar had Bass guitars, just like was Ale, Sierra Nevada, and Guinness, it was doing all Skynyrd. But right from a young beer snob’s perspective. Every Wednesday was “Widespread they also had Wednesday,” and they would play live recordings of three distinct Widespread Panic shows all night. I tended to skip songwriters with those nights. Eventually, it evolved into more of a live music venue once it was purchased by Alex three distinct Harris, a former Pour House regular and old drinkvoices. ing buddy of mine. He and his wife Vanessa, who was also an old Pour House regular, still own and operate the much larger Pour House on Maybank Highway on James Island and the adjoining restaurant, The Lot. I worked at the City Paper from 2000-2005 and I lived around the corner from the original Pour House. I would find myself there almost daily, drinking Bass Ale and playing Golden Tee. I got to know Alex then. He was a local drummer and we shared a passion for music. We spent many nights at that bar just shooting the breeze, throwing back beers, and talking about our favorite bands. I was a “music writer” then, so I felt like I had to give a shit about whatever emo, cool kid indie-rock band was popping
up on the scene. It was a markedly bleak time for Charleston’s music scene. Post-Jump, Little Children, pre-Shovels & Rope. Bands like Wormbelly, Beam, and 351 Cleveland were rare bright spots. The Working Title and Leslie hadn’t quite emerged just yet. So I had the task of covering whatever fleeting flavor of the week was deemed “cool.” Alex, with his undeniable Southern drawl, gravitated more toward bands like the Allman Bros. and some of the jammier bands of the day that were rooted in Southern rock ‘n’ roll. Being from Greenwood, S.C., I also had an appreciation for these bands. I was raised on country music and grew up listening to Marshall Tucker Band, the Allman Bros., and Lynyrd Skynyrd. But, in my effort to be a “cool music writer” I had admittedly wandered far from those roots. Alex helped bring me back to them. Once he took over the Pour House, it became more than a neighborhood pub that served good sandwiches and had a decent beer selection. Music was Alex’s passion and so music became the focus of the Pour House 2.0. West Ashley needed — Charleston needed — another live music venue for local and touring bands, so it filled that niche nicely. By then, Alex was renting my house, located just behind the Pour House. I had moved across Savannah Highway, but was still stumbling distance to my favorite watering hole, which had now also become my favorite music venue. This was 2002 or 2003 and I remember it was the first year City Paper added “Critics’ Picks” to its annual Best Of issue. So I wrote that the Pour House was “West Ashley’s Best Music Venue.” But the former editor and assistant editor, neither of whom had ever stepped foot in the place, couldn’t get past the “Widespread Wednesday” thing and decided it was just a place for hippies to listen to jam bands “noodle” around. Without my knowledge, the headline of my critic’s pick was changed to “Best Noodle Bar.” Alex felt betrayed. He was hurt (pissed), and I couldn’t convince him that I didn’t know the category would be changed. We’ve patched things up now, and I’m as happy for he and Vanessa’s success as they are of West Of’s and now, Folly Current’s. But that doesn’t change the fact that for months after that Best Of issue, people would come into the continued on page 84

continued from page 82 Pour House looking to order some ramen or chicken lo mein. One night in 2003, the Pour House closed to the public, and I was invited to a private BYOB event where a band called the Drive-By Truckers were playing an intimate, acoustic show at the small West Ashley bar. At the time I had heard of them, but never actually heard them. I remember sitting on a cooler in the middle of the bar and listening to something that would change my musical trajectory and in some ways my life’s trajectory. These boys from Alabama, by way of Athens, Ga., had all the swagger of the Southern rock bands I loved, but without the Confederate flag, racist bullshit, and “Play Freebird!!!!” jokes that went along with it. They had a punk-rock soul with a Southern accent. They were cool and indie, but talked like the people I grew up around. This had been the sound I was longing for. Indie rockers who played loud and with three guitars, just like Skynyrd. But they also had three distinct songwriters with three distinct voices. Back in 2003, a new guitarist had just joined the band, following their critically acclaimed Southern Rock Opera breakout album. He was a young, fat kid who wrote heartfelt songs that also rocked out. He went on to shed the weight and the Truckers. His name is Jason Isbell. He’s now a skinny, Grammy Award-winning songwriter who just played a packed house at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center and has been crowned by some as the savior of country music. But he’s really not country at all. He and his new band The 400 Unit, which features Charleston’s own Sadler Vaden (formerly of Leslie, Drivin N’ Cryin’), actually are a great rock ‘n’ roll band in their own right, but are beloved by those who, like me, were raised on country and rock ‘n’ roll. It’s a delicate line to walk, but Isbell has managed to do it masterfully. But back in 2003, Isbell was still unknown, although he was showing signs of his future greatness. And everyone else who had packed into the old Pour House that night knew they were seeing something special. Not just the emergence of a new voice in Americana, but the Truckers were just about to blow up and become the darlings of the Southeast music scene. The last cover story I wrote for the City Paper in late 2004 was about the return of Southern rock and the rise of the Drive-By Truckers. A blown-up image of that cover still hangs framed in my dining room. I’ve since seen them dozens of times and am never disappointed. But that night back in 2003, sitting on a cooler at the old Pour House in a West Ashley strip mall will always be my favorite. The lucky few that got to see that band in an intimate, acoustic show that night were really lucky. And Charleston is really lucky that Alex and Vanessa went on to take the Pour House to a bigger space on James Island where they continue to help cultivate the local music scene and expose folks to some of the best bands touring the Southeast.

20 Much-Missed Venues Alas poor houses of music, we hardly knew ye BY KELLY RAE SMITH, INTERN (2005-2006), MUSIC EDITOR (2014-2017)
Looking back at local venues that are no more from the past 20 years has been one heck of a walk down memory lane for not only myself, who moved to Charleston one year after the conception of the City Paper in 1997, but to every person I spoke to while researching this piece. Remembering can be bittersweet, and with every good memory comes a pang of aching nostalgia — the inability to return to a time and place, the faces you can only vaguely still place, but most of all, what hurts the most, is the everchanging landscape of a once far more innocent, charming, colorful Charleston. Some spots have gone on to become other cool places, sure, but others have been demolished or replaced with something corporate or equally sterile. What we can learn from the nostalgia is this: support your local venues, and hang on to the memories as tight as you can. They are fleeting. local institution, Granny’s Goodies — where vintage clothing was sold before that became the millennial’s wardrobe essential. It was at this Cumberland’s locale that nights like Jump, Little Children’s Metal Monday (a.k.a. Haireoke) became legendary and cheap Mystery Beer was a poor guy and gal’s go-to. Its last show was on New Year’s Eve in 2007 with local band Live Oak, but not before one last Metal Monday on Sat. Dec. 29. R.I.P., sweet Cumberland’s.

WEST ASHLEY’S THE MAP ROOM CLOSED IN 2008
THE PLEX Once upon a time, The Plex lived at 2390 W. Aviation Ave., and it was there that locals could go see everyone from Blues Traveler (2001) and the Flaming Lips (2003) to the
VILLAGE TAVERN Deerhunter, Andrew Bird, the Mountain Goats, Kings of Leon: Those are just a few of the slew of greats that have graced the stage of the late great Village Tavern in Mt. Pleasant. Located at 1066 Johnnie Dodds Blvd., the venue got its start in 2002 before new ownership and renovations in 2010. It closed for good in 2012, with one of its most legendary nights happening one summer night in 2006 when Band of Horses threw a surprise gig there. Announced day-of, the show sold out lickety-split, and the Charleston-based band went on to become a household name around the world. Old local faves the Green & the Bold (Dex Cox, Kevin Hanley, Stephanie Something, Richard Hussey, Cary Ann Hearst, Billy Compton, Steven Thompson, Josh Kaler, and more) opened. CUMBERLAND’S Oh, Cumberland’s. There’s not enough room here for the words we have for you. First at Cumberland Street, the venue was instrumental in the city’s music scene — local music veterans were welcomed on its stage as teens. Many would-be pros got their start on the dive’s open-mic stage. Its rock ‘n’ rollin’ tradition continued when the venue moved to where the Apple store now resides at 301 King St., sharing a space with another former
Violent Femmes, the Strokes (both in 2006), and Conor Oberst, the latter of which was one of the last shows in November 2007. The building that housed this once adored venue is no longer, as it was demolished in 2008 to make room for a new SCE&G building — a story as sad as hearing an Apple store would overtake Cumberland’s.

OCEAN SONG CAFE Ocean Song Cafe was owned by local singer and songwriter, Carroll Brown, who you’ve hopefully caught at either Tommy Condon’s or Dunleavy’s Irish pubs at some point. Brown enlisted many a Nashville songwriter as well as local and regional talent, making the IOP cafe a go-to destination for local music lovers. Many were sad to see it go. THE NEW MOULIN ROUGE Now here’s a flashback. Back in the early 2000s, folks flocked to this itty bitty bar to catch its incredible funk-and-R&B house band, the Secrets, on Saturday nights. The sneaky part is that the fun often occurred after 2 a.m., after which things got cramped, sweaty, and super lit. We don’t know how they got away with it for so long and sometimes, looking back, it all seems like a dream. Led by Bill Wilson, the Secrets are still on the local live circuit, and damn if they aren’t as groovy as they were 15 years ago. MOMMA’S BLUES PALACE Momma, her husband Papa Dupree, their son JoJo Wall, and their band were the house act at local blues staple Momma’s Blues Palace, which once sat across from the Charleston Music Hall at 46 John St. A pretty ace spot for a date night, the joint was gritty and full of smoke and Momma’s sarcasm, wit, and howling vocals. The band still keeps the bar’s memory alive as Momma’s Blues Palace, so catch ‘em around town if you can.

KING STREET PALACE The former King Street Palace on Upper King is the stuff of legends. Acts on the bills included Vanilla Ice, Anthrax, Skid Row, George Clinton & the P-Funk All Stars, Live, Dead Kennedys, the Replacements, and Fiona Apple. Before the mid-’80s, it was called Charleston County Hall, where guys like Jimi Hendrix, the Byrds, the Doors, Buffalo Springfield, and Strawberry Alarm Clock rocked. Even Elvis Presley (1956) and Count Basie (1947) — you heard me — graced the stage. The site at 1000 King St. is now home to Palace Apartments.

FLYING DUTCHMAN Hello, 1980s. At 4355 Dorchester Road’s Flying Dutchman, music fans would come for the music — the Allman Bros., Joe Cocker, and Leon Russell, to name a few. But they stayed for the Drink and Down on Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays. They did the drink-all-you-can for $5, sat back, and enjoyed the live music on the juke joint’s huge stage, where anybody who’s anybody performed. BERT’S BAR Beloved for a quarter-century, the nowdefunct Bert’s Bar has been described as the Cumberland’s of Sullivan’s. The venue hosted live blues, country, and rock acts and closed in 2007 due to rent hikes. The space at 2209 Middle St. is now home to Home
Team BBQ, who graciously hosted a Bert’s reunion back in 2009. If that doesn’t cement its sentimental value, how ’bout this: On its last day of business, musicians held a New Orleans-style funeral down Middle Street to bereave and celebrate the 20+ year ride. DIY/NONTRADITIONAL SPACES In researching for this list, readers suggested quite a few former gems that were not necessarily set up to be official venues, but that nevertheless played important parts in the music scene across one era or another, and we’d like to pay homage to those spots here: King Street art space Tivoli, the CofC Communications Museum helmed by the late great Rick Zender, warehouse space called Outer Space, Great Wall Chinese, Spring Street’s Eye Level Art (also formerly the Garage), the old 52.5 Records (when it was a bigger, band-friendly space on Upper King ), and even Granny’s Goodies, where the early-days V-Tones played. Another notable for this list is Andolini’s on Wentworth Street (rest in power, old girl), where Band of Horses’ Ben Bridwell delivered pizza at one point, and where Secret Guest’s Brett Nash’s old band Hip Young Gunslingers opened for Round Robin of Toro Y Moi, Thank You, and Future Islands. Deertick also performed there. Wowsers, right? FLUIDS/RADIO ROOM Only a bar as punk-rock as Burns Alley Tavern (BAT) could take the place of this spot’s endearingly grimy history. Where BAT sits now, many a dive bar came before, including, in order from recent history to way back, Fluids (still the grossest bar name of all time), Capone’s (not a venue, but a bar where you could always find you some trouble), and Radio Room — a sweet spot in the local scene to catch national and local acts. Depending on the era, it all happened behind the old La Hacienda, which replaced D’oriano’s Pizza — once favorite late-night stop. It was at Fluids that I first saw Cary Ann Hearst sing — she performed there with Danny Cassady and members of Jump, Little Children as Borrowed Angels — if memory serves me right. In 2014, Hearst told Rolling Stone that the bar Comatose in Shovels & Rope’s breakout hit “Birmingham” is in reference to Fluids, where she and Trent first shared a bill back in 2002, when their love story began. And no one’s even a little surprised they changed the bar name to something far more rock ‘n’ roll, right? MEZZANE Mezzane lived above the old Sermet’s, and its owners ran the hip, always really dark jazz bar upstairs frequented by beatniks and punks alike. A great old hangout it was, later replaced by jazz bar the Mezz, which was recently replaced by The Gentry cocktail bar. THE WAREHOUSE Many punk and rock shows went down at the Warehouse, be it at its old East Bay residence or the one at King & Wentworth, which folks may remember also housed Zebo, which is where Band of Horses’ Creighton
Barrett worked as a line cook back in the day. Readers recall seeing bands like Against Me! perform there, and Action City Blackout’s Emily Richards remembers the load in-andout process on East Bay the most, where bands hauled their gear through the parking garage behind the Little Cricket/next to High Cotton.
CLUB DOG ALLEY Also at one point the LGBTQ-friendly Treehouse Nightclub as well as Ground Zero bar, Club Dog Alley was important in the local rock ‘n’ roll scene, where Social Distortion, Elvis Hitler, Hootie & the Blowfish, Flotsam-and-Jetsam, and Flat Duo Jets performed as well as local bands like the Archetypes and former City Paper columnist Jack Hunter’s punk band, Crotch Rot. Yes, Hunter says their mothers were proud.
JOHNNY OLA’S Where Voodoo Tiki Bar now thrives is where Johnny Ola’s began the groundwork, along with, of course, Gene’s Haufbrau, in making Avondale a cool and happenin’ place. When the barkeeps and clientele weren’t busy drinking everything at AC’s (guilty as charged, I am), they hung out just over the bridge here, a sweet little escape from downtown where rock ‘n’ roll acts were often on the menu.

At The ACME, everyone from 311 to Muthafist to Concrete Blonde, Joan Jett, and the Band — yes, that the Band — played. ACME’s last show? The motherfucking Ramones, y’all. LITE AFFAIR Who remembers Lite Affair? First it was on Cumberland Street and later moved to 137 Calhoun St., where, on Sundays, you could usually find house band La Calle performing up to four-hour improv sets before it closed around the end of 2006/beginning of 2007-ish. These days, you can rock out in the same spot to bands at Big Gun Burger Shop and Bar.

OASIS Everything from rock to punk to hip-hop found a welcoming space at James Island’s Oasis, or the Reef, depending on what year we’re talkin’. Now The Break sports bar at 778 Folly Road, the Oasis is where the Explorers Club’s Jason Brewer remembers his old garage-rock outfit 1984 performing, while local hip-hop trio Savage Souls had their Savage Saturdays there as recently as 2013.
THE MAP ROOM West Ashley’s the Map Room had one helluva heyday, bringing local and national live rock, blues, jazz, hip-hop, and pop acts to its stage nearly every night of the week beginning in 2005. Located in the Village Square Shopping Center on Sam Rittenberg, the Map Room and all its memory-making came to an end in May of 2008, its owner Ryan Brown citing lower crowd numbers in the venue’s final months.

HOW ART THOU The Joy Project Jazz Quartet, West Coast-style cool jazz,
The music of Charleston’s Matadero quartet is a dark, haunting mix of swirling keyboards, subtle-but-insistent rhythms, and singer Lindsay Holler’s stunning wail of a voice, which can go from jazz-level control to feverish intensity with ease. It’s just a shame the six-year-old guitarless group doesn’t get to play together more often — they’re all busy with their own projects. But Holler says that sometimes that time apart can be a plus. “We get really excited when we see each other,” she says. “We enjoy each other’s company a lot, and we don’t get to see each other every day. It keeps things fresh. If we were doing the same thing every day we might not be as good at listening to each other as we are.” They’ve been seeing a bit more of each other lately, though. “I’m trying to finish up a solo record, actually,” Holler says. “The last time I released something was 2010. And, ironically, it’s usually the members of Matadero playing with me on the solo album, too.” —Vincent Harris SATURDAY

The phrase “soggy po’ boys” is one that should strike terror into the heart of any true Southerner, but once you get past that, the music of the brass-heavy New Orleans septet of the same name is pretty damn easy to enjoy. On their most recent album, Perhaps it is Time to Go Home, the band swerves from moving versions of traditional gospel material (“Old Rugged Cross”) to torn-throat Latin-spiked dance numbers (the deceptively titled, irresistible “Darkness,”) to smoky after-hours blues (“Opium Tea”) before they ever get to the more expected Big Easy second-line party tunes like “Rhymes With Propane” and “Cocheco Strut,” which even comes with a Tom Waits/Louis Armstrong hybrid vocal. In other words, they’re a lot of fun and they can handle the stereotypical New Orleans brass band stuff, but listen more closely and you’ll hear a far more versatile group than you might expect, no matter how familiar the horn section sounds. —Vincent Harris WEDNESDAY

SOUL | Black Girl Magic Diva showcase Black Girl Magic puts the spotlight on local songstresses with an evening of classic soul and funk. The night will feature every artist on the bill doing solo performances, and playing tunes like Tweet’s “I was Created for This” and “Four Women” by Nina Simone as a group. “It’s kind of our way to put our own spin on the cover songs that we love to listen to,” says organizer Zandrina Dunning. The event’s focus will be well-loved tunes, but Dunning hopes to emphasize the strength that comes with getting on stage. “We want to empower black women,” she says. “There’s a lot of women I know who are battling with self-esteem issues. A lot of them are really curvy and some of them are really dark-skinned, and there’s a lot of discrimination around that they feel. I think this event is really geared towards those women.” This is the first event for Dunning’s showcase series Melanin Music and was put together with the help of Chef Mac (a.k.a. Philip McAlister). In future performances, Dunning wants to incorporate originals into the showcase. She says, “This is just something too good to do this one time.” —Heath Ellison SATURDAY

PSYCH-ROCK | Psychic Pets Psychic Pets are a concoction consisting of one-part punk, twoparts psychedelia, and best served while moving. Their first EP Pets:: (fuzzy home recordings) came out one year ago, and the title succinctly describes the three-song collection. “ISATOPES” puts the whole thing into perspective with hypnotic keytar riffs and mesmerizing guitar rhythm. “Big Wavez” rides the same formula to make a pleasant psych-surf jam, and “Dem Boiiz” takes the listener down the rabbit hole with a mystifying guitar track and unrestrained interludes. The band kept things loose and turbulent by recording everything with four cell phones. And, although their recording equipment came with a family plan, every track on Pets sounds as good as any lo-fi recording. Drummer “Thomas [Berkau] mixed it,” says synth player Josh Jay. “I don’t know how he did it, exactly.” The majority of Psychic Pets’ tunes come from guitarist/vocalist Ross Heath, who formed the band with Jay a week and a half before their first show. The group has been occasionally working on new material in the past year, but has no release date in sight. Luckily, fans can listen to Pets anytime they like. —Heath Ellison FRIDAY
