$300M suit filed against Bishop England, Diocese of Charleston alleges voyeurism BY SKYLER BALDWIN

A class action lawsuit filed Thursday morning alleges that Bishop England High School officials watched and recorded naked male and female students in the Daniel Island Catholic school’s locker rooms.

The suit, filed in Berkeley County Feb. 3 against the school and the Catholic Diocese of Charleston, is asking for $150 million to those who have paid tuition to the school and an additional $150 million in damages paid to the alleged victims of the voyeurism. “For at least two decades (since 1998), BEHS students were made and required to disrobe partially or fully, exposing themselves in locker rooms controlled by Defendants BEHS and the Diocese,” the suit claims. “Each of the locker rooms (boys and girls) were subject to viewing through a large glass window,” according to the suit. “At some times, the referenced students were completely clothed. At times, the students were partially or completely nude.” A roughly 4-foot square window in each of the three locker rooms, two male and one female, was installed between a staff office and the area commonly used by students to change, shower and use the restroom. A total of 600 victims are included in the classaction lawsuit, ranging in age from current

underage students to graduates and tuitionpaying families. The windows were boarded up and replaced by a brick wall after an employee was found to have recorded and downloaded video footage of school-age children in the locker rooms, according to a statement from the Diocese, which said the windows were installed for a reason. “Their purpose was to allow coaches to monitor for fights, bullying, smoking or any type of inappropriate activity that might occur within the locker rooms,” the Diocese said. “The plaintiff’s claim that the windows were installed for the sole purpose of exploiting students is simply ludicrous.” The victims named in the suit are represented by attorneys from The Richter Law Firm, Solomon Law Group, Slotchiver & Slotchiver and Brent Souther Halversen. Attorney Lawrence Richter’s firm has handled claims of sexual activities by priests and other officials and affiliates with the Diocese for years, according to a statement

provided at a Feb. 4 press conference. The Diocese faced another sexual abuse suit as recent as Jan. 4, 2021. “This firm has been handling claims for sexually abusive activities by priests and other officials of the Diocese of Charleston,” Richter said. “I’ve litigated with them many times and have received many promises from them — I had thought enough to stop it. “Each time we filed one of these suits … I have fervently hoped that it would be the last, and it never is,” he said. “This is a far greater problem than persons not intimately connected with it in some way could ever know or appreciate.” Richter, who graduated from Bishop England in 1964 and served as a state senator for two years, is also the parent of three daughters who graduated from the school. That connection allows him to better understand the nature of these crimes as well as the mental state of the victims, he said. “You learn never to challenge the hierarchy of the church, the priesthood and the nunhood, you get conditioned,” he said. “I like to think that in today’s society, the way we communicate is better now,

but you can’t lose sight of the fact that … these are kids. They’d say, ‘I thought we follow the rules, whatever they are; you’re Mr. Rule-maker.’ ” Richter’s history of dealing with the Diocese is lengthy, but he said this issue permeates more places than just Charleston. “I have done a hundred of these cases, not just against the Diocese of Charleston, it’s everywhere. You have no idea how … and I think I know my way around the block, but I didn’t properly perceive how broad-based this is or how devastating it is. “These people who are victimized have their guts ripped out. They lose everything. They lose their entire youth first and then their entire life, sometimes literally.”

CARTA TO OFFER DOOR-TO -DOOR SERVICE TO SENIORS, OTHERS TO PENINSULA

The Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) officially launched CARTA OnDemand Feb. 1, a first-in-the-region partnership with transportation companies Uber and UZURV. The pilot program offers door-to-door service for seniors age 55 and up for up to 20 trips per month to and from the Medical District on the peninsula and an additional 10 trips per month to or from the WestEdge Publix. All CARTA Tel-A-Ride customers are eligible for unlimited use of the service on the peninsula. “The focus of CARTA OnDemand is on one thing: Putting our riders first,” said CARTA Board of Directors Chairman Mike Seekings. “The enhanced level of service offered through this partnership with Uber and UZURV will make traveling easier for the most vulnerable transit users. “Direct, on-demand access to necessities such as doctor appointments, the pharmacy and grocery store is an unprecedented step forward for public transit in our region, and it is something we hope to replicate in the future,” Seekings said. Registration is now open online or in person at the Berkeley-CharlestonDorchester Council of Governments . Current Tel-A-Ride customers are prequalified for the program. The service operates 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Trips with UZURV and Uber cost $4 each way, and rides can be scheduled as far as 30 days in advance or with as little as 1-hour notice. Users can book rides through the Uber app or by calling the CARTA OnDemand call center at (843) 5923505. Masks are required while using the service. —Skyler Baldwin

CUNNINGHAM TEASES BIG ANNOUNCEMENT … IT’S A PODCAST

Former South Carolina Congressman Joe Cunningham teased political watchers and supporters near the end of January, saying he would share a “big announcement,” keeping many on the edge of their seat through a 56-second Twitter video that felt like the start of a new political campaign. The video eventually took a twist into Cunningham’s trademark brand of semiserious politician humor, cutting to a side view of the Charleston lawyer wearing a pair of navy shorts and a smirk. His big announcement: the new “Joint Resolution with Joe Cunningham” podcast. “My service to South Carolina is just getting started, and I will be sharing my plans for 2022 very soon,” Cunningham said in a tweet Monday morning. “In the meantime, I hope this podcast gets people thinking about how best to come together and tackle the challenges facing our state and nation.” Episode 1 of the podcast, now available on Spotify, features former U.S. Rep. Denver Riggleman, a Virginia Republican, and U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger, a Virginia Democrat. Nancy Mace, a former state representative, defeated Cunningham in 2020, putting the 1st District back under Republican control. Speculation has followed Cunningham’s post-congressional career, including questions about whether he will mount another bid in the 1st District or something higherlevel, like a challenge to U.S. Sen. SC TWEAKS HOW IT CALCULATES COVID POSITIVITY RATE State health officials on Feb. 2 announced a change to the way they will calculate the percent positive of COVID-19 tests going forward. The calculation change brings the state in line with others and is a better measure of spread, officials said. But, slightly lower positivity rates should not be used as indicators that COVID-19 poses any less of a risk in the state than before. Previously, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental

Control was calculating the percent positive using the “people over people” method by comparing the total number of new people with positive results to the combined total number of new people with positive and negative results. That method did not account for people who were tested twice, officials say. The newly adopted “tests over tests” method is a straightforward comparison of the total number of positive tests compared with the combined total number of positive and negative tests.

“It is important that people understand that while percent positive appears as a smaller number under the new way of calculating the rate, COVID-19 continues to spread at an elevated level in our state. That smaller number is solely based on the change in the way we calculate the rate,” said state epidemiologist Dr. Linda Bell, in a statement on Tuesday. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) uses the new method as well. —Sam Spence

MACE TWEETS, FUNDRAISES OFF AOC FEUD

Charleston-area Rep. Nancy Mace, during an 18-minute Fox News interview on Feb. 4, after an all-day Twitter feud with U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, accused the New York Democrat of being “very good at politicizing things to her advantage.” A Mace fundraising email landed in supporters’ inboxes a few hours later. It started the previous night, when a tweet from Mace’s official account took issue with media attention from OcasioCortez’s account of being holed up in her office on Jan. 6 as pro-Trump extremMACE ists stormed the U.S. Capitol. “I’m two doors down from @aoc and no insurrectionists stormed our hallway,” Mace followed on Thursday morning. On Jan. 6, both Mace and Ocasio-Cortez were confined to their offices in the Cannon Office Building as the attack unfolded across the street at the Capitol itself. From there, the first- and second-term reps traded tweets, with Ocasio-Cortez calling Mace’s initial tweet, “A deeply cynical and disgusting attack.” Ocasio-Cortez posted a series of videos earlier this week recounting the fear she felt when she heard a Capitol Police officer come into her office searching for her, not knowing it was law enforcement on the other side of the door. Some news reports attempted to fill in the blanks in OcasioCortez’s account, incorrectly placing intruders in the New York rep’s office. On Fox’s afternoon programming, the freshman Republican maintained that her initial attacks were over the general media reaction. After Ocasio-Cortez responded, Mace tweeted, “I deal in facts. Unlike you, apparently.” Mace’s office did not respond to the City Paper‘s requests for clarification about what facts were in dispute. During her first few weeks in Congress, Mace was the subject of a number of stories following the Jan. 6 insurrection, recounting the fear she felt and putting the deadly attacks at the feet of outgoing President Donald Trump. As the press hits added up, “A new voice for GOP” appeared in her Twitter bio in late January. During the Fox appearance, Mace mostly resisted hosts’ attempts to aggressively target Ocasio-Cortez, claiming she was simply stating the facts that attackers never entered the Cannon building. Mace’s dispute over how close pro-Trump insurrectionists came to her office a month ago comes as House Republicans grapple with violent extremism in their own ranks. That afternoon, Mace voted with Republicans against removing Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene from committees over her history as a QAnon believer and school shooting denier, among other things. In between her Fox appearance and the vote, a Mace campaign fundraising email asked people to “chip in any amount.” “It’s time for a new GOP voice in Washington,” the email read. “And it starts by calling out the B.S. and holding Washington accountable to the people once again.” —Sam Spence

A woman told officers that while stopped at the Savannah Highway drawbridge, she was rear-ended by a red Mazda that was rear-ended by a different white car. The driver of the Mazda reportedly jumped out of their car and into the white car, which fled the scene. Ah, fast friendships forged in sticky situations are truly a light in the darkness. A West Ashley big box store’s loss prevention officer was on break in the parking lot when he saw two folks stuffing their car full of shoplifted merchandise, one such item was confirmed as a Hover-1 Max Hoverboard. If only the thieves had used that as their getaway vehicle.

Police discovered a small amount of marijuana rolled up in a lottery ticket inside a man’s car after threatening to retrieve his K-9 partner from his patrol vehicle. We weren’t sure what to use as the punchline, the fear of the K-9, or the lottery ticket being put to better use, so here’s a halfassed attempt at both. Two highly modified shotguns and multiple boxes of ammunition were stolen from the back of a Toyota 4Runner in a downtown parking lot, and a handgun was stolen from a West Ashley storage container. Less pressing, but just as interesting, two 5-pound dumbbells were stolen from a third vehicle parked downtown. Police busted two West Ashley men for suspected drug dealing, and are holding onto their two iPhones, a black flip phone and more than $1,000 cash as evidence. Eligible to be returned, however, is the gun. Because freedom, we guess.

The same man popped up in no fewer than four reports this week, and in the most recent, he was described as a “local vagrant needing many police interactions.” Reports include sipping a sex on the beach along a downtown street and tossing a glass pipe with black tar-like residue into some bushes outside a downtown church. A woman who previously told officers about an exboyfriend stalking her said the man reportedly set up a private photoshoot for her with a downtown photography studio. Officers are unsure of whether this appointment was made after they told the guy to stop contacting her, but either way, that’s a little much, we think. A James Island man reported that his car had been stolen by his friend after they had spent some time hanging out at his house. The man later received a text message saying only, “Your car is fine.” That’s not that reassuring, buddy.

Advocate Wanted Charleston County officials need to remember they work for us

ews flash: It is actually possible to pull off a major local project without wasting millions of dollars. But in Charleston County, the concepts of transparency and common sense generally are nowhere to be found. At every turn in recent years, it seems like whatever Charleston County leaders touch winds up being more expensive than budgeted and clouded in controversy. It’s time for the culture of rot to become a memory. Citizens must demand an end to the county’s business-asusual attitude that steers piles of cash to insiders. Just look at the county’s stellar track record of waste. Of course, there’s the naval hospital, which the county was forced to buy after a clumsy real estate deal, and then sold for millions less. Then came the long-awaited county recycling center. Then, a shady land sale downtown (connected to the naval hospital) and another head-scratcher on Remount Road. There’s also the new North Charleston library, approved in 2014. In 2021? It’s still unbuilt. And, don’t forget Interstate 526, still in design after years of government ineptitude. Those are just the infrastructure projects that have come in late, unbuilt or over budget. Do not forget a former county administrator’s $221,000 severance pay that’s still unaccounted for. Or the $200,000-peryear airport administrator job handed from one elected official to another. Or the North Charleston City councilman paid $81,000 by the county for an airport consulting contract. And just this week, we learned about a previously undisclosed separation agreement that paid $216,000 to former county attorney Joseph Dawson just before U.S. Sen. Tim Scott (an ex-county council member) and former President Trump nominated him to be federal judge — despite little experience in federal court. (We could keep going, but space constraints limit us to

potential conflicts from the past two years.) At its highest levels, Charleston County government seems to enable a culture of financial waste and personal enrichment that does not do us any favors. It’s a symptom of priorities perverted by the convenient ethics of a handful of rungovernment-like-a-business conservatives who decry waste except when it helps them and their buddies. Dawson was the highest-paid county employee, earning a whopping $432,000 a year before his departure. So, we can’t blame the 17 lawyers who applied for the cushy job to replace him. Perhaps not surprisingly, the four finalists are local, according to The Post and Courier. But if we want county government’s culture to change, we must look beyond the Lowcountry. Conduct a search. Hire an independent attorney who won’t be swayed by internal allegiances. Pay someone full-time and don’t allow him or her to have other legal clients on the side. Then, go a step further: Hire a public advocate to serve as a watchdog for local residents within county government. The extent of the dysfunction within county government calls for extraordinary steps beyond periodic elections to ensure local residents’ voices are heard. A county public advocate, like the ombudsman that the city of Charleston has, would ensure the disclosure of sweetheart deals, increase public notice ahead of consequential votes and field complaints from local residents who’ve been wronged. Let the two newest county council members from each party lead the hiring process out in the open. Let them be accountable to council, and not be afraid to elect new leadership if they continue to fail us. Remember, Charleston County Council works for us, not just the insiders.

Last week, I received an email from my son’s school. It warned of a COVID outbreak attributed to the sports programs. The email ended by asking if we’d like to sign up for rugby or lacrosse. For a moment, I just stared at the email. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. We’ve had more than 400,000 COVID cases in South Carolina. Nearly 7,000 have died from the virus in our state. So when the school let us know that COVID had spread through sports and then asked if we wanted to sign up for sports, I wasn’t entirely sure how to respond. Social psychologists tell us “cognitive dissonance” describes the discomfort we may feel when a cognition, or something we know, contradicts a behavior, or something we do or see others doing. When what we know and what we do are at odds, we feel a certain tension. The greater the gap between cognition and behavior, the greater the tension. In my case, the tension left me staring blankly at an absurd email. Many of us have been living with a sense of cognitive dissonance since the first COVID cases arrived in the Lowcountry almost a year ago. We shut down briefly, then reopened quickly and watched the inevitable community spread and rising death toll along with it. Our governor inexplicably refused to order a statewide mask mandate in order to slow the virus and save lives. He continues to refuse, even as health officials now ask us to double mask, given the new, more contagious variants of COVID. For the record, 42 U.S. states and territories have mask mandates. South Carolina, Georgia and Florida do not, ensuring that our region will remain a petri dish for replication and possible mutation of the virus. Leaders failing to heed the science and act accordingly brings to mind perhaps the greatest example of cognitive dissonance we have: the lack of an urgent response to the climate crisis. Scientists have been studying climate change my entire life. Their warnings have grown louder and the evidence overwhelming since the first Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report was published in 1990. Yet, you don’t have to follow climate news to know this. Just look around. In 1950, Charleston experienced tidal flooding twice. Last year, it happened more than 40 times. By 2051, models predict we can expect 60 days of tidal flooding. Also since 1950, our sea level has risen 11 inches. As the water warms and rises, it makes for more frequent and intense hurricanes. In 2020, we saw 30 named storms, 13 of which became hurricanes. Given the data and our lived experience, you’d think our leaders would constantly be talking about the climate crisis and creative ways to respond to it. Instead, we see and hear the same old things. Building on fragile Captain Sam’s Spit? Expanding our Interstate 526 traffic jam? We’ve been having such out-of-touch conversations for years. Sure, a wall has now been proposed that would protect the oldest and wealthiest part of the peninsula, but what about the places where most people live? The cognitive dissonance is astonishing. So, in some way, it wasn’t a surprise when I read the email from my son’s school. There’s a COVID outbreak. Would you like to sign up for rugby or lacrosse? There’s a climate crisis. Would you like to sign up for continued development or fossil fuel emissions? Honestly, I’d settle for a statewide mask mandate, and a real conversation about what the science is telling us and how far we are from a meaningful response. I never replied to the email. I didn’t laugh. I didn’t cry. I didn’t write back. I just ordered dinner from a favorite local restaurant that packages the food carefully and leaves it in a bag for us to pick up, contact-free. It was an acknowledgement, I think, of reality; the only way I know to respond to cognitive dissonance.

reat moments are born from great opportunities. That’s what we have this Valentine’s Day, Charleston. Sure, the pandemic has put a damper on all major holidays since last March, but Feb. 14 is a chance at redemption in the form of a perfectly executed athome Valentine’s Day. Luckily, the City Paper has you covered, with local experts’ tips for recreating classic cocktails and serving an affordable dinner with dessert, all in the comfort of your own kitchen. This might not have been the year you expected, but maybe that’s a good thing when it comes to Valentine’s Day. From happy hour to the main course and dessert, here’s the City Paper’s guide to crafting a pandemicfriendly Valentine’s Day date at home.

LET YOUR CHEESE GET TO ROOM TEMPERATURE BEFORE SERVING

Starting with happy hour allows for the chance to relax while preparing the main course, and Kwei Fei general manager Aneel James, who creates the restaurant’s eclectic beverage menu, has a drink suggestion based on two major cocktail trends he’s leaning into at the James Island eatery — infused booze and punches. James serves a punch called “Big City Nights” at Kwei Fei as an ode to the “scorpion bowls” found at Cantonese restaurants in Boston, but with ingredients like pacharan, orgeat and citrus baijiu, you probably won’t want to test out this drink on Valentine’s Day. Instead, check out his idea for an at-home punch that calls for infused Campari. “I’m a negroni drinker, and there’s a JAMES great punch that you can make,” James said. “One really fun thing to do for Valentine’s Day is infusing Campari with strawberries and doing a ‘Negroni Sbagliato’ punch.” To make this four-ingredient drink, James said, simply add 5-10 strawberries to a bottle of Campari and combine with sweet vermouth and prosecco. A late afternoon cocktail goes best with a light appetizer, and Counter Cheese Caves owners Nora Granger and Eric Casella have cheese suggestions to pair with James’ bubbly negroni punch. “The classic Valentine’s Day play is a soft ripened, bloomy rind cheese — buttery, decadent bries, triple creams, etc. These guys also demand some GRANGER bubbles, so if you’re going with a single bloomy rind, make sure to have a nice effervescent beverage to lighten things on the palate.” Looking for a wine to pair with your cheese? Just head to Edmund’s Oast Exchange, where Granger and Casella have partnered with general manager Sarah O’Kelley to offer a Valentine’s Day-specific wine and cheese combination. Once at home, take your cheese out CASELLA of the fridge one hour before use so it has time to get to room temperature. The couple suggests purchasing at least 8 ounces of each type of cheese and serving with accoutrements like crusty bread, dried fruit, nuts or olives. If you opt for multiple cheeses, try mixing up the textures or milk types — three cheeses means you can serve one of each of the major milk types: cow, sheep and goat. HAPPY HOUR SHOPPING LIST

Dombrowski, owner of Ted’s Butcherblock, said a couple 8-ounce tenderloin filets seared in a pan or on the grill can be a great Valentine’s Day dinner. For sides, Dombrowski advises roasted or grilled asparagus. For a little extra, consider potatoes au gratin. Don’t want to work too hard for your Valentine’s Day? Dombrowski puts in a shameless plug for the beef braciole — stuffed beef rolls filled with prosciutto, pine nuts, fresh herbs and grated parmesan — available for pre-order at Ted’s Butcherblock this weekend. “It’s the perfect comfort for winter, yet elegant enough for a special dinner,” he said. “The only issue is it’s a pain in the ass to make.”

Life Raft Treats owner Cynthia Wong makes complex sweets on a daily basis, but she says whimsical desserts don’t always have to be complicated. Wong suggests using silicone molds, available at most local grocery or craft stores, to turn brownies, cookies or even cinnamon rolls into special Valentine’s Daythemed desserts. “Now, you can find a little cute heart-shaped silicone molds anywhere, and they’re super inexpensive,” Wong said. “People can also get the cinnamon rolls in a can — which I have to admit is a huge guilty pleasure of WONG mine — and bake one of those in a silicone mold. I think the main thing is to just do something really thoughtful and heartfelt.” With specialty items like her “Not Fried Chicken,” Wong has a knack for making dessert look like familiar savory dishes. Raft Treats magic at home, Wong has an idea for turning store-bought ice cream sandwiches into a homemade masterpiece. “Make a little lasagna out of ice cream sandwiches,” Wong said. “If the sandwiches are kind of the noodles, then you can make the ‘ricotta’ a different flavor and then top with shaped sprinkles.” Line a sheet pan with parchment paper, then put down the first layer of ice cream sandwiches before topping with whipped cream, chocolate or caramel sauce and heartshaped sprinkles. When it comes to the main attraction for your Valentine’s Day dinner, you’re going to want something that’s simple but indulgent and impressive. Private chef Lauren Furey specializes in cooking for parties and special occasions and thinks Feb. 14 is as good a time as any to try to make something special. “When I think about Valentine’s Day, it just seems like a night for, like, a couple to slow down and spend some time together in the kitchen instead of rushing around to make a last-minute dinner,” she said. Furey has spent time working with chef Bob Waggoner and apprenticing under Nathalie Dupree, renowned cooks who teach others how to build confidence in their own kitchens. Furey and butcher Ted Dombrowski picked beef FUREY tenderloin as a fitting main dish. “This dish is quite flirty and perfect for Valentine’s Day,” Furey said. “This recipe will yield leftovers, setting the scene for breakfast in bed … Steak and eggs, anyone?” Furey’s roasted tenderloin, inspired by Dupree, calls for a 2-pound center cut tenderloin, trimmed and tied. Preheat the oven to 500 degrees. Combine 2 tablespoons each of olive oil and Dijon mustard and rub on the outside of the meat. Transfer to a roasting pan, season with salt and pepper. Reduce the oven to 400 degrees and roast 18-20 minutes, or until the meat reaches 130 degrees for rare, 140 degrees for medium-rare. Furey calls for roasted cherry tomatoes with her tenderloin. Georgia artist Stephen L. Hayes is a sculptor, multimedia creator and the most recent recipient of the Gibbes Museum’s 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art. Hayes’ work regularly criticizes the intersection of capitalism and racism, with the hope of breaking the images and stereotypes of Black Americans. He is perhaps best known for Cash Crop, his traveling exhibit that examines enslavement’s continuing impacts on American society, which puts these themes on full display. After his recent Gibbes recognition, we caught up with Hayes to discuss his process and his art’s message. The interview has been edited for space.

City Paper: You use a lot of found materials in your work. How do you decide what to use and what not to use when searching for material? Stephen Hayes: For the most part, it’s not really a search for materials. A lot of times, I’m just driving around, and I’ll see something on the side of the road, get out of the car and get it. But, there’s also a place here in Durham called the Scrap Exchange, and they sell objects that people are getting rid of, kind of like a Goodwill. CP: Do these materials help inspire your ideas or do the ideas guide you on what materials to use? SH: It’s 50/50. Sometimes I’m making something, and then, I’ll remember, “Oh, I found this piece, it would be perfect to go in here.” I always like to say, “If I can’t find it, I’ll make it, and if I can’t make it, I’ll find it.” CP: You’ve said that artists are as much translators as they are creators. Can you

explain that philosophy and how it influences your art? SH: Art has this cool magic that it can do. It can make comments, it can ask questions, it can unite people with different views … In a lot of my work, I want to change the way I’m being viewed or the way someone who looks likes me is being viewed. You see me as a tall African American male with dreads, and most of the time, they only think, “He plays basketball or does some kind of drugs or whatever.” I want to change the way that is being seen. I’ve traveled the world and seen so many different things. One of my best friends is a white guy, and no matter where we go in the world, we both have two different experiences. People will look at me and ask me for drugs, but they won’t do the same thing to him. I’ve never done a drug in my life. CP: A lot of your work, including Cash Crop and your tapestries, features a lot of repetition and symmetry. Why do you use that visual motif, even when depicting atrocities like the trans-Atlantic slave trade? SH: I’ve seen that image of how they put people on the ships, and it made me think about how people still benefit from that today. I started to put that image in some of my iconography. I put the slave ship [image] inside an ear of corn. Corn is a modified organism — when I put the slave ship in corn, it’s talking about how we as people can make a modified organism, how we’re being programmed to produce a certain outcome. I use three images throughout my artwork: a horse, an ear of corn and a pawn. My work deals with capitalism, consumerism and brainwashing, and the idea is how the Black body is represented today.

Drag queen Patti O’Furniture will present a drag show at the Charleston Music Hall Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. titled, “Valentine’s Day is a Drag.” The show will feature Nicole Paige Brooks of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Layla Foxxx, Judy Simmons and Melody Lucas. According to a press release, this is the beginning of a new series of shows from longtime local-favorite drag queen Patti O’Furniture at the Music Hall. These performances will highlight queens from the local to the national levels, and will feature comedy, illusion, dance and music. Because of COVID-19 protocols, the Music Hall is limiting capacity to 250 people with socially distanced reserved seating. Masks are required at all times, unless eating or drinking. Tickets for “Valentine’s Day is a Drag” are $20 and available at the Music Hall’s website. —Heath Ellison

CP: Cash Crop has been traveling for over a decade. Did you expect this exhibit to go on for as long as it has? SH: [Laughs] When I made that exhibit, it was for my thesis, so I didn’t know the amount of weight that I created, what I had created, when I was creating it. CP: Why do you think it’s resonated so well with the public? SH: I think it’s a story, and it’s a truth that needs to be told and isn’t being said or taught in the schools. The overall experience it creates — I think that’s why it resonates. I created a one-on-one experience for a person. These statues look them in the face, and they have another story behind them talking about today and it’s changed today and it’s evolved. CP: Your work references the Black experience in America often. What do you try to bring to such a huge conversation through the art? SH: [I want to] open up a dialogue for other people, a cross-generational, intercultural dialogue, and basically change the way people that look like me are being viewed.

EXHIBIT INSPIRED BY ‘SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE’ COMING TO COFC LIBRARY Artist Lance Miccio’s oil painting exhibit inspired by Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Slaughterhouse-Five will be available for College of Charleston students and staff to view Feb. 15-March 15. The painting exhibit will feature 25 images inspired by scenes from the lauded antiwar novel. Miccio’s paintings were originally hosted by the Vonnegut Museum, under the titled Slaughterhouse-5.0, in celebration of the book’s 50th anniversary. Miccio is a native of Sullivan’s Island, but currently resides in California. The exhibition will be hosted by CofC English professor Susan Ferrell at Addlestone Library. Sanchez bases country-style Mexican cuisine on tradition BY PARKER MILNER

Maya del Sol Kitchen owner Raul Sanchez’s parents didn’t want him to be a chef. But after spending five minutes with Sanchez in his West Ashley home, it’s clear he’s found his calling. In fact, it’s painfully obvious as shown in his newly renovated kitchen and a lush backyard garden that soon will be filled with hot peppers that will make their way into bottles of hot sauce. “I was born and raised in Chicago — Mexican parents, both were chefs — so I’ve been in the food world ever since I can remember,” Sanchez said. “My parents didn’t want us to get into the food world obviously, but I’m the only one from eight who did.” Sanchez, the oldest of his siblings, recently opened Maya del Sol Kitchen, his third local venture since he arrived in Charleston in 2011. The Reynolds Avenue restaurant, open for dinner Thursday through Saturday and brunch on Sunday, defines the country-style Mexican cuisine that Sanchez cooked with his mother and grandmother during his childhood. The experienced chef wasn’t always drawn to the culinary field, but a chance encounter with a friend led him down the path he’s happy he traveled. “I happened to have a friend who owned a temp agency, and one of her biggest clients was Dean Foods,” said Sanchez, recalling the days before he accepted a temporary job at one of the largest milk, butter and ice cream processors in the country. The three-month assignment as a data analyst in 1995 turned into a full-time corporate chef position after Dean Foods learned of Sanchez’s lineage. The main perk of the job, Sanchez said, was the company’s willingness to pay for his culinary training.

As is the case with many chefs, Sanchez’s journey to opening his first restaurant took him out of the culinary field for seven years. But when the time came to leave the Midwest, he had some help deciding where to land. “My grandma had been in South Carolina for 30-plus years. We would visit her once a year,” said Sanchez, recalling discussions with his grandmother before he moved to the South. “My grandma says to me, ‘You said if you ever left Illinois you would give Charleston a try,’ so I ended up here by guilt.” Sanchez initially planned to open an Italian restaurant called Raul’s Tuscan Flair, but his disappointment in Charleston’s continued on page 18

So it affected me, but we have learned to adapt and do what we have to do to make a living.” One Mexican dish that portrays your style of cooking: Picadillo. New project: “I’m hopefully going to come up with a cookbook that would have what I would consider very traditional home as-I-grew-up recipes.”

He moved to a new Park Circle digs a year later before closing up shop in 2016 — but Sanchez wasn’t finished sharing his Mexican cuisine with Charleston.

The grandmas cook all day on a Sunday for everyone to come to dinner on Sunday evening,” Sanchez said. “I cook a lot of Italian here, and I cook a lot of Mexican as well.” Sanchez’s home is filled with not-so-subtle hints at his profession, such as the cast iron pans by the fireplace, the 8-foot butcher block in the kitchen and the floor, where he’s filled in cracks in the tile with silverware. “My friend and I did the floors ourselves,” Sanchez said. “We went all the way to the subfloor because there was a sinking problem. When we fixed that, we tried not to break the tiles, but when we broke those, I said ‘You know what, I can do a pattern with spoons and knives.’ So, that’s how that became. A fixed mistake.”

Backyard bridges gap between home and new restaurant After spending four years at R. Kitchen’s West Ashley location, where he owned part of the restaurant and featured Mexican Night on most Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Sanchez set out on his own again postpandemic, opening Maya del Sol Kitchen in January. The restaurant features Sanchez’s signature country-style Mexican cooking, plus he’s offering bottles of his extra spicy hot sauce made from peppers grown in his backyard. “That was one of the reasons to get the house,” he said. “There are flower beds ready for the spring, and we’ve got a bunch of seeds germinating so we can put them in the flower beds in late February.” And, this isn’t your average hot sauce — Sanchez’s has chocolate habaneros, Trinidad scorpions, ghost peppers and Mexican cayennes. “It’s very flavorful, but very hot,” he said. “You put it in your mouth, and it doesn’t kill you. I always tell people that you’ll be surprised by how much your tongue will tolerate if it hits you with flavor first.” Spice and flavor are exactly what you’ll find at Maya del Sol, where Sanchez serves a five-course meal with beverage pairings for $60. He has several specialties, including carne en su jugo, house-made tamales and his signature “mole,” a one-of-a-kind sauce you won’t find anywhere else in Charleston. “Growing up in a multicultural city, we had a family from Puebla who introduced me to their mole,” Sanchez said. “So I took that recipe and some of the items that I like the most from my mom’s and some of the items that I like the most from my grandma’s, and that’s how I came up with the mole I sell at the

restaurant. Depending on what I can find, it’s about 75 ingredients.” Opening a restaurant during a pandemic has meant long hours and late nights, but Sanchez is looking forward to spending more time at home in his garden and that newly renovated kitchen, where there’s still more work to be done. “I have so much working space, you know. I can knead dough; I can butcher and experiment,” he said. “I’m still working — I want to do a metal tile ceiling.” Tried-and-true family recipes are the hallmark of Sanchez’s cooking, a style he’s proud to showcase at Maya del Sol. “(The restaurant) gives me an opportunity to explore a lot of dishes that I have had in the back of my brain from my grandma and my mom.”

Treating and preventing 4 pesky plant pests BY TONI REALE, ROADSIDE BLOOMS A houseplant’s demise can sometimes be mistaken for owner neglect, but lack of care may be a misdiagnosis. Infestations from the most common houseplant pests, such as spider mites, scale, mealybugs and fungus gnats, can sometimes be the culprits. Fortunately, there are many ways to prevent and treat an infestation. With patience and persistence, most Reale houseplants can be fully rehabilitated.

Mealybugs are insects that appear to be surrounded by cotton fuzz. They move slowly often hiding in hard-to-see places. Most plant parents dread mealybugs — because they are difficult to control. According to Homestead Brooklyn, mealybugs reproduce like rabbits in the insect world. Females can lay about 600 eggs at one time, and in seven to 10 days, you can have an infestation. Another month or two later, those babies turn into full-grown adults and the cycle restarts. Despite being voracious reproducers, their mobility easily allows them to move from plant to plant. If you see tiny flies zipping above the surface of the soil of your houseplant, you likely have fungus

gnats. They aren’t sucking the sap out of the leaves like spider mites, mealybugs or scale; instead, they’re either eating tiny root hairs or soil nutrients, killing your plant from the bottom up.

LOCALS RECOMMEND TREATMENT OPTIONS There are chemical and non-chemical options for treating these common pests. B.J. Stadleman, owner of Haegur plant shop on King Street, creates his own non toxic concoction made of Dr. Bronner’s castile soap and water. Preferring peppermint scent because it has the added benefit of repelling most pests, he continued on page 22

WHAT TO LOOK FOR The first step is to know what you are looking for. Before bringing out your magnifying glass, some easy-to-identify signs that you might have a pest problem include small silky webs, little round white crust-looking spots on the underside of a leaf, gnats flying close to the soil or tiny specs that look like cotton fibers. If you know you are properly caring for your plants, but leaves turn yellow or plant edges crinkle and fall off, you may have a pest problem. Identifying and treating the four most common pests that plague houseplants will save them from becoming compost. According to Clemson’s College of Agriculture, spider mites are actually related to spiders, not insects. Their eggs are translucent to light yellow in color and can usually be spotted nestled in a silky web. More mature mites appear as brown dots on leaves. Discolored areas on leaves could be spots where a mite has sucked out sap. Scale is an insect that lives most of its life on the woody stems and undersides of leaves. They live up to their namesake by looking like a brown-ish raised scale. Their armor-like exterior protects them from predators as they use their spiky mouth to remove nutrients from plants.

Grizzly II: Revenge is an unfinished, fascinating mess with some famous faces Way back in 1983, when Ewoks were undermining the gravitas of the Empire and Tony Manero was prancing through Satan’s Alley with a little help from Rocky Balboa, Grizzly II: The Predator was starting production. Directed by André Szöts, the film is a sequel to Grizzly, William Girdler’s legendary, shameless Jaws rip-off. Girdler’s flick is a slice of fun silliness that became the top-grossing indie in 1976, regardless of the critical drubbing it received upon release. Production on the sequel (in name only) went in full swing seven years later, with principal photography starting in Budapest, Hungary. Unfortunately, one producer allegedly left with a good chunk of the money. Without a source of income to pay for the equipment’s rental cost, the Hungarian government eventually seized most of it. The film seemed kaput until some time in the mid-2000s, when a 97-minute workprint made it around the internet. Cut forward (again) to 2021, and producer Suzanne C. Nagy is releasing a completed version of the film with the nifty new title, Grizzly II: Revenge. It’s really a fascinating film, separated from its backstory. It’s a movie you experience while asking, “Why?” and, “What?” throughout. Louise Fletcher of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest fame, plays Eileene Draygon who is essentially the money-grubbing “nothing to see here” Mayor Vaughn from Jaws while John Rhys-Davies (Raiders of the Lost Ark) is a French-Canadian trapper who refers to himself in the third person sometimes. To sum it up, Grizzly II is a rip-off of a Jaws rip-off. No one watching this is peeping it for any cinematic greatness. I know I wasn’t. I was intrigued by the backstory of the production and curious to see how they attempted to rescue the movie. Every kill scene is essentially actors screaming at the camera and a shot of a bear, or an animatronic equivalent, growling. You have characters spouting such wonderfully stupid dialogue like, “This grizzly is huge, obviously powerful and probably enraged,” and, “Leave this devil-bear to Bouchard!” I hate seeing movies where an animal is harmed, but the melodramatic music matched with horrendous CGI blood spurting out of a cute cub made me giggle. The film is padded with rampant stock nature footage that screams, “We have a drone,” and scenes of hillbilly hunters playing grabass. At one point, amidst all the footage of ’80s synthpop groups

performing on stage at an outdoor concert, we’re given footage of a different present-day music group dancing and singing at the camera like a music video. It’s baffling. This is clearly an unfinished flick. Considering the film’s backstory, I can’t help but ask: Why wasn’t more time invested in creating a new story that utilizes the footage as flashbacks like Silent Night Deadly Night Part 2? Or maybe they could have made a movie about the making of the film? If you’re wanting to watch this film to see Clooney, Dern and Sheen in their hungry actor phase, you’re better off looking at the trailer or finding a clip online. But if you’re looking for a slice of WTF-ery, this is your movie. It was an incomprehensible, semi-lazy mess, but it wasn’t un-bear-able either. I couldn’t help myself.

Acclaimed pitmaster John Lewis’ El Pasoinspired concept Juan Luis will take over the 10,000-square-foot space currently occupied by Workshop, Charleston’s exploratory food court that recently announced it will close this spring. Juan Luis, which currently operates out of a custom-built trailer outside Lewis Barbecue nearby, was one of Workshop’s first tenants back in 2017, occupying the largest stall for over a year. According to a press release, Juan Luis’ move into the space will be an expansion of the “border-style” cuisine found at its trailer, which opened in September 2020. The new spot will serve lunch and dinner and feature an in-house “tortilleria,” where Lewis and chef de cuisine Philip Powers will make corn and flour tortillas, along with a mesquite grill for grilled meats and seafood. Several changes will be made to the space, including new decor from local interior designer Betsy Berry, and Lewis plans to expand the menu with additions like fajitas, salads, soups and more. Juan Luis is targeting a fall 2021 opening date. The Juan Luis food trailer will continue to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner daily until the new restaurant opens, when the trailer will shift to a limited menu. Where to find house-made alternative milks in Charleston BY ELISE DEVOE The rise in alternative milks using almonds, oats and even peanuts or pecans has put the heat on traditional dairy milk, as these substitutes provide an equally creamy and delicious option to use in coffee drinks, baked goods or savory bites. Several restaurants in Charleston offer non-dairy milk substitutes, but only a select few make their own in-house. Locally, Babas on Cannon, Huriyali and Carya make nut milks with overall wellness and flavor in mind, transforming plant-based regional ingredients into dairy-free delights. The City Paper got the inside scoop from these small business owners on the inspiration for their made-in-house peanut, almond, cashew and pecan milks.

PEANUT MILK, Babas on Cannon

In search of a locally sourced and more flavorful non-dairy milk, the team at Babas on Cannon created their own house-made peanut milk. According to owner Edward Krause, it’s easier to make than you might expect. “It’s very straightforward — we use peanuts, the sweetener is sorghum that we get from Tennessee, then we add in fleur de sel and filtered water,” he said. “Once we went down the Southern nut milk route, we committed to sourcing as much as we can regionally.” Sweetening the peanut milk with sorghum not only contributes to the flavor — it also caramelizes and balances out the bitter notes of the coffee when steamed, Krause said. Babas’ peanut milk also delivers the bold flavor non-dairy milk enthusiasts are looking for. “A lot of people ask what the peanut milk tastes like, and that makes sense because a lot of nut milks are pretty neutral — but it’s really peanut-y,” Krause said. Babas’ most popular menu item featuring the alternative milk is its peanut mocha — think Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup in a glass. Patrons can also substitute peanut milk in any of Babas’ coffee drinks, or you can just drink it straight from the glass. “Ultimately, our patrons want a delicious milk alternative, they just don’t know it exists,” Krause said. “There are kids that will just get a glass of peanut

milk to drink, and that’s such a win.”

When Ruchi Mistry and Tom McFall opened Huriyali six years ago, non-dairy milks weren’t mainstream like they are today. Disappointed with the number of preservatives in most commercial nut milks, the couple started making their own almond and cashew milk. Huriyali’s almond milk is a simple combination of organic almonds, filtered water and organic medjool dates. The milk adds freshness to organic smoothies, house-made chocolate drizzle for acai bowls, and it can even be used in savory items like Huriyali’s vegan cashew nacho cheese. “Whenever a recipe calls for milk, we substitute it with our house milk,” McFall said. “We do not use dairy milk in any of our recipes at Huriyali.” The cashew milk has a few more ingredients. Organic cashews are combined with organic medjool dates, vanilla, filtered water and a touch of pink Himilayan salt. Guests can enjoy these house-made concoctions in any of Huriyali’s coffee drinks, and 16-ounce bottles are available for customers to take home upon request. Mistry and McFall emphasized their belief that non-dairy milk doesn’t just have to be a vegan alternative. “There’s such a variety of different nut milks,” Mistry said. “Every nut has its own flavor profile, and you can open the door to creativity for your beverages.”

Elgradawy and Emily Lippes’ new company swaps California almonds for South Carolina pecans, bottling their house-made milk and delivering it to locals in search of a flavorful alternative. “Pecans pack a huge punch nutritionally. They are packed with vitamins and antioxidants,” Lippes said. Carya’s pecan milk is made from all-local ingredients including pecans from Yon Family Farms, Bulls Bay Sea Salt and R&R Acres honey. Elgradaway is stepping away from the business, but Lippes is keeping Carya’s mission alive, sharing the company’s all-natural pecan milk with Charleston at various local markets.

The duo behind Rosalie’s mobile pizza truck will set up shop at Butcher & Bee on Wednesdays this month starting Feb. 10, serving regular, Detroit and grandma-style pies that feature organic and naturallyleavened dough. Industry veterans Leah Highfield and Jeremy Williams own the truck that’s been popping up all over the Lowcountry at places like Recovery Room Tavern, Estuary Beans & Barley and Fatty’s Beer Works, among others. The truck serves traditional and square slices that are topped with fresh ingredients like homemade whole milk mozzarella. “Michael Shemtov told us he saw some Instagram posts of our pizza and reached out,” Highfield said. “They have really good bread ovens, so we’ll actually be hiding in the back room with a pizza station back there.” Highfield and Williams cater to vegans with their Italian “Beyond Meat” sausage and signature vegan mozzarella cheese. Butcher & Bee will offer a pared-down menu to serve alongside the pies. Highfield and Williams plan to serve specialty pizzas throughout the month. Perfect Pair Middleton Made Knives’ success forged by husband-and-wife team Middleton Made Knives owner Quintin Middleton needed his wife Kendra when he was fired from an industrial mechanical job in 2012. Kendra stood by his side as she does today, a crucial player in the Saint Stephenbased company delivering handcrafted kitchen cutlery to chefs and home cooks all over the country. “If it wasn’t for her sacrifice in the beginning or belief in me from the start, I wouldn’t be here now,” Quintin said. “At the time, I didn’t know if it was going to be a sustainable career — it was a leap of faith, really, and my wife gave me the OK to chase that dream.” Quintin and Kendra met in high school in band class — he played the trombone, she played the clarinet. According to Quintin, they became close after Kendra was involved in a car accident, and they eventually started a relationship after high school. In 2007, the couple were married in Quintin’s hometown of Alvin, South Carolina, at Bethlehem Baptist Church. This Valentine’s Day marks the 18th they’ve shared together as a couple. When he was fired from his job in 2012, Quintin attempted to make ends meet doing maintenance for the city of Saint Stephen, until Kendra told him to stay at

home and focus on making knives while she went back to work. “It was 2012; I had already started Middleton Made Knives, but more as a side hobby,” Quintin said. “To have me work just to put my children in daycare, that didn’t make sense to me. It was a helpless moment. She came home one day, and she said, ‘I got your back, Quintin, you try to do this knife thing full time, and I’ll support you every step of the way.’” Nearly a decade later, Middleton is a renowned bladesmith whose handcrafted knives have earned him praise from chefs like Sean Brock and Emeril Lagasse. He’s hired three employees to assist him in his 1,000-square-foot facility, recently launched a more affordable knife series catered to line cooks and hopes to expand production soon. But, none of it would be possible without Kendra, Quintin said. “Kendra makes sure I’m on track with all of the orders and when they need to be shipped,” he said. “For the events, she handles all of the transactions and makes sure the event runs smoothly. I’m the maker, and she’s the one who makes sure I’m on task — I couldn’t do it without her.”

B-Side Himself Taylor Hickman looks back at over 5 years and 50 ‘B-Sides’

Filmographer Taylor Hickman has been steadily charting the music scene with his video series B-Side Sessions for about five years now. With over 50 episodes of the series in his pocket, and more on the way, Hickman plans to continue building the series with more music and by expanding into other avenues … eventually. Hickman began filming performances of artists soon after he moved to the Charleston area, starting with indie-rockers Whitehall. “We met up and filmed a live session, and the quality on my end was pretty shitty,” Hickman laughed. “We put it out and no one really watched it.” It wasn’t until Hickman reached out to local-favorite and nationally recognized indie act SUSTO that B-Sides began to pick up steam. “B-Sides Sessions became this exercise in networking for me,” he said. “I wasn’t really making money off of it, but I was meeting a lot of people in the music industry.” B-Sides is often filmed in various locations — outdoors, in studios, apartments, bars, just to name a few. Thanks to the connections he created, Hickman had access to spaces like Truphonic and Fairweather studios. “It’s always been very collaborative,” he

said. “I’d have people helping me with the audio side of things, and then, I’d be running the video. A networking, logistical creative outlet is what it was for a long time.” Over the course of the series, Hickman has filmed artists such as Florida Man and Terraphonics. Some performances are big and full, like the set of videos he did for Slim S.O.U.L., the City Paper Music Awards’ 2020 artist of the year. But, others are quiet and intimate. Hickman finds the subtle power of framing through only a few different shots of Kennedy Williams during an acoustic performance of her song, “Peace.” The lighting and atmosphere in the video for Grace McNally’s rendition of “Capricho Arabe” adds plenty to the classical composition with little effort. Some find an equilibrium, like Brett Nash’s loud electric solo performance of Secret Guest’s “Tomorrow’s Been Done.” Hickman told the City Paper he doesn’t believe he was very adept at filmmaking in the series’ early days, but he’s seen himself grow over the years. “Since the pandemic started, I’ve had a lot of downtime, and I’ve tried to fill it with working and being more creative,” he said. “I got really into the cin-

ematography side of filmmaking and lighting. That’s kind of my goal moving forward — being more of a filmmaker or cinematographer or director of photography.” In one of the upcoming sessions, Hickman filmed Whitehall frontman Paddy McKiernan for a round of solo tunes. Hickman said the session is a cool juxtaposition between the first and most recent videos. “The cinematography of that [Whitehall] session wasn’t very good, and now I get to see Paddy five years later and actually give a damn of how the filmmaking side of it looks,” he said. B-Side Sessions have historically been pretty “go with the flow” affairs, Hickman said. “There’s never really a shot list or anything, it all happens kind of organically,” he said. “I think I’m trying to be more pointed and think about the images more moving forward.” Hickman said he wants to grow B-Sides as a brand and production company in the future, featuring live music, commercials, narratives, music videos and documentaries. “I want to really double down and focus on B-Sides as more than just a live session thing,” he said.

Local music performance organizer Kit Monroe is hosting a new web series called The Kit Show. The first episode features appearances by DJ DollaMenu (who wrote the theme song), Indi’Gxld and others. “The Kit Show is an adult-friendly variety show where everyone is welcome,” Monroe told the City Paper. “We feature an eclectic range of people from musicians, stylists, dancers to a sex candle maker. This show was created for the local community and beyond to have a safe place to express and promote themselves.” The show’s definitely not fit for work computers, but it’s mostly full of absurd and occasionally surreal comedy. Throughout, rapper Indi’Gxld shows up to dispense weirdly specific advice about not giving sexual favors for lunch, unless it’s Lunchables. One skit encourages self-confidence with existential implications and loads of green screen effects. The Kit Show was directed by Monroe and produced with the crew behind The Grilled Cheese Show. —Heath Ellison

KATIE VELTRI DOES SOME SOUL-SEARCHING ON ‘DRAW LOVE’ Singer-songwriter Katie Veltri released a lo-fi neo-soul song last week titled “Draw Love.” The jazz-influenced track focuses on Veltri’s warm vocals and a reverberating piano sample. Veltri’s use of programmed drums gives the song a modern flare. The singer sounds distant as she sings “I don’t want to find myself/ I look but I can’t/ the moment keeps passing by.” The accompanying video features footage of lonely landscapes and Veltri singing in a few locations. Last year, Veltri’s song “Catch Me” was featured on 105.5 The Bridge’s Critic’s Choice playlist. Check out “Draw Love” and Veltri’s other singles on Spotify. —HE

HIGH WATER FEST 2021 CANCELED, WILL RETURN NEXT YEAR

High Water Festival will not return in 2021, it was announced on Instagram Friday. The local favorite festival, created and curated by Shovels & Rope, will return in April 2022 to Riverfront Park. “We wouldn’t be able to deliver the festival experience you know and love this April, so we are going to focus all our efforts on preparing for next year,” the festival’s account wrote on social media. “We are excited to start sharing plans for next year, so stay tuned.” High Water’s cancellation amid the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 was one of the biggest early blows to the local scene. High Water has garnered national attention in the last few years, and 2020’s festival was set to bring out major talent like Wilco, Leon Bridges and Brittany Howard. —HE

Forte Jazz Lounge is celebrating all things love with five days of shows leading up to Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Week, as they call it, will feature some of the jazz venue’s most well-known friends playing music based on various themes. Concert series for Forte, announced Pure Fest last week. The festival will feature loads of diverse genres and artists in Summerville April 3, and will benefit Charleston Walk for Autism. Missouri-born siblings Gracie & Lacy will return to Forte Friday for two sets titled, “Stupid Cupid.” The vocal duo is promising an evening of love stories, classic love songs and tap dancing. Their repertoire pulls from the Great American Songbook, featuring tunes from Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and the Andrews Sisters. Joe Clarke, co-owner and founder of Forte Jazz Lounge, will close Valentine’s Week out with two nights of shows titled, “Fall in Love Again.” Clarke will perform jazz standards with the Joe Clarke Big Band throughout four sets over Saturday and Sunday.
