A plan to restart a defunct South Carolina nuclear facility with a new mission has safety advocates worried about tons of new nuclear waste in an area of the state with a checkered radioactivity record.

“The essential problem with the work at the Savannah River Site (SRS) is there have been a number of newfangled ideas to either downgrade or reuse plutonium or other nuclear byproducts,” said Tonya Bonitatibus, executive director of Savannah Riverkeeper, a nonprofit advocacy group.

“Often, that just means we bring in more waste that is indefinitely stored in South Carolina and often not used even for the purpose it was brought in for.”

The new U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) budget includes a request for $603 million toward the production of plutonium pits, a key component in nuclear warheads, at SRS. Nearly all pits currently in the U.S. stockpile were produced from 1978 to 1989 because the U.S. had only one active site for decades to produce new pits. The recent funding request marks a 37% increase from 2020, which moves the department closer to its goal of restoring pit production and producing 50 pits per year by 2030.

Under the project plan, SRS would repurpose its unfinished Mixed Oxide (MOX)

Fuel Fabrication Facility as a proposed Savannah River Plutonium Processing Facility (SRPPF).

“Repurposing this unfinished facility would allow NNSA [National Nuclear Security Administration] to make use of an existing seismically qualified structure, with numerous supporting facilities, including office, assembly and fabrication space; construction facilities; and existing SRS services and infrastructure, such as security, fire protection and emergency response,” a 2020 SRS report said.

But South Carolina’s troubled history with nuclear production and the costs associated with it are leaving many skeptical.

“I worked against the MOX project for over 20 years before it was terminated because I knew it was a bad idea and a waste of money,” said Tom Clements, director of watchdog advocacy group SRS Watch.

In case you missed it, local librarygoers: The Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) stopped charging fines for overdue library materials starting June 1, including DVDs, Blu-Rays, CDs, Chromebooks and many other nontraditional items after having stopped charging fees for overdue books in 2018.

This is part of a growing trend throughout the country, as libraries seek to increase accessibility to their services.

Items not returned within 42 days of its due date may still be considered lost, however, which may lead to a referral to a collections agency in order for the library to recover either the item or its full replacement cost.

All fines incurred before June 1 will be waived if the item is returned to the library by the end of July as part of the CCPL’s “Amnesty for All” initiative.

Clements has been monitoring SRS or working in its area for more than 40 years with various advocacy organizations, including Friends of the Earth off and on since 2008.

“I estimate the pit project would bring in about 7.5 metric tons of plutonium, and most of that would go back out in the form of a pit, but there’s plutonium waste, transuranic waste, low-level radioactive waste and low-level mixed radioactive waste,” Clements told Charleston City Paper. “There’s a large volume of nuclear waste that would be created, and some of it would be dumped in commercial facilities, but the preferred option is dumping it in on-site trenches.

Police investigating grafitti at Nancy Mace’s Daniel Island home, nearby parks Vandalism at the Daniel Island home of U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace and three nearby parks in the affluent Charleston suburb is being investigated by local police.

A Charleston Police Department incident report said Mace left her home the night of May 29 and returned the next morning to find the suspected vandalism on her front sidewalk and on the stucco foundation of her house.

The phrases “No gods, no masters,” “All politicians are bastards,” “Fuck you Nancy” and “Pass the PRO Act” were painted in black spray paint, along with anarchy symbols that Mace described as “Antifa symbols” — a reference to anti-fascist left-wing activists commonly vilified by conservative politicians. In March, Mace joined most Republicans to vote against the Protecting the Right to Organize (P.R.O.) Act, a bill that expands protections for workers exploring union organization.

Police were also called to investigate incidents of vandalism at three Daniel Island parks nearby.

Police said last week that no suspects had been identified.

The reports of Daniel Island vandalism came around the same time as damage was reported to the monument to Denmark Vesey in Hampton Park downtown.

“These cowardly acts of vandalism are not who we are, and they will not be tolerated,” Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg said in a statement. “Here in Charleston, we don’t deface monuments, and we don’t vandalize people’s homes.” —Sam Spence

Lowcountry blood supply ‘critically low,’ provider says The blood supply in the Lowcountry has remained “critically low” in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and after months of historically low blood donor turnouts, according to a press release from local blood donation organization The Blood Connection (TBC).

Last week, hospital partners with TBC reported they had been using more blood than normal, while for nearly half the days this month, TBC was unable to collect enough blood donations to cover hospitals’ needs.

TBC resorted to back-ordering blood products, affecting 12 hospital partners so far.

“TBC relies on community blood donors to prevent a blood emergency like a shortage,” the group said in a press release.

“Although TBC is responsible for keeping the blood supply stable, it cannot replicate

blood; it must be donated. In times like these, an urgent plea to the public is the only way to improve the sharp decrease in donations.”

Even during the early days of the pandemic, in May 2020, TBC was able to collect enough blood donations to cover those needs 84% of the time.

If blood supplies remain low, it is likely that TBC will have to start rationing blood supply by the end of this weekend, the organization said in a press release.

TBC is urging those willing to donate blood to schedule an appointment or locate a donation opportunity. While a COVID-19 vaccination is not required to donate, those who have received any of the approved vaccines can make donations immediately.

How Mia McLeod could make the 2022 SC governor’s race different

State Sen. Mia McLeod has already made South Carolina history by becoming the first Black woman to run for governor. But in a state where Democrats have lost the last five elections for the governor’s mansion, could McLeod flip the script?

GOP Gov. Henry McMaster will appear on ballots again in 2022 — his eighth run in 36 years for statewide office — but the Democratic field from which his opponent will be chosen is wide open for now.

McLeod McLeod’s announcement Thursday made her the third candidate to enter the race. Activist Gary Votour and former U.S. Rep. Joe Cunningham have also announced campaigns.

On top of 10 years of experience in the state legislature, three terms in the House and her current tenure in the state Senate, McLeod, a Bennettsville native who lives in the Columbia area, brings a shift compared

The Order of the Palmetto is awarded by the governor in recognition of “extraordinary lifetime service and achievement.”

“Instead of Vincent, Vincent, James and Joe, we’re about to witness Mia. That contrast alone is different. Not only in name, but also policy proposals,” he said.

“In the past, we’ve had conservative Democrats spending a whole lot of time and energy pandering to voters who have historically not supported the Democratic nominee in the general. The difference here is I think Mia will, first and foremost, represent the interests of the heart of the party.”

Cunningham is also a “well-qualified” and “exciting” candidate, Kimpson said, but he will let the candidates make their cases before endorsing.

In a statement Thursday, Cunningham said, “Mia brings an important voice to this race, and I look forward to spending time with her on the trail as we make our case.”

McLeod has been a vocal critic of McMaster and Republican legislators who have maintained a stranglehold on state government for years. Last year, she criticized leaders’ return to Columbia to debate voting laws following early COVID-related

shutdowns, citing her own bouts with sickle cell anemia. During debate over restrictive anti-abortion laws, McLeod revealed she had been the victim of sexual assault.

“I believe in a South Carolina where the governor has the courage to lead, the compassion to feel empathy for others, a connection to the people she represents, the character to do the right thing simply because it’s the right thing, and the conviction to stand, even if she has to stand alone,” she said in her announcement Thursday.

Criticisms of McMaster will likely be plentiful from all candidates, said Marguerite Willis, a Florence attorney who previously ran for governor in 2018 and has not ruled out a run in 2022.

“What we have different this time, is you have four years of experience to shoot it with regard to Henry McMaster,” she said.

Whoever the nominee is, Kimpson said, they can’t just be in the race for a feelgood discussion of the issues or to put up a good fight.

“I don’t believe we move the needle by sending a message. We need to win.”

“The last thing we need here in South Carolina is more nuclear waste,” he said.

A 2019 report from the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control’s Environmental Surveillance Oversight Program said radioactive waste associated with the Savannah River Site is well within acceptable levels.

But critics contend those levels would surely increase with new nuclear production, and nuclear waste and materials would also need to be moved from site to site, as the project spans from South Carolina to Nevada, using shipping trucks. Fortunately, that means the risk of hazardous material spilling into Palmetto State waterways due to this project is minimal, Clements said, as nuclear materials wouldn’t be shipped aboard waterbound vessels.

The plan isn’t without risk. Waste can leak from ground sites into waterways, or seep into groundwater below, an untilrecently ongoing issue, according to statewide reports between 1971 and 2019.

“Plutonium pit production … would result in a large amount of plutonium being brought into the site for processing and would yield various types of nuclear waste, threatening groundwater and the Savannah River,” environmental organization Sierra Club said in a statement June 3. “If the plans to produce plutonium pits fails or succeeds, South Carolina would be burdened with a significant radioactive waste problem. No schedule to date has been presented for the removal of this material in the form of pits or associated waste streams.”

But those behind the drafted proposal believe the project is worth the chance.

“The National Nuclear Security Administration must implement a strategy to provide the enduring capability and capacity to produce no less than 80 war reserve plutonium pits per year,” the SRS report read. “This approach would provide an effective, responsive, and resilient nuclear weapons infrastructure with the flexibility to adapt to shifting requirements and counter future threats.”

What’s next

Ultimate decisions will be made by authorization of the project and appropriation of funds in Congress.

“We are definitely encouraging people to write members of Congress, including the S.C. delegation to oppose this project,” Clements said. “All of them are pretty much in favor of it — even [U.S. Rep. James] Clyburn’s office likes the jobs it would produce.”

The S.C. Environmental Law Project is likely to file a lawsuit on behalf of environmental advocacy groups against the proposal, citing national environmental policy acts that the project would reportedly butt against if current designs were not amended. Clements’ group is likely to sign onto the lawsuit, he said.

Lock up the Memorial Day vandals

Anyone who desecrates a public memorial or sprays vulgar graffiti on sidewalks outside the home of a public official deserves to be caught and jailed for offending public order and decency.

In a democracy, we express opinions in a civil fashion. It is simply not cool or acceptable to sneak around under the cover of darkness to smash or spew vitriol that you do not have the courage to say in public.

Twice in recent days, Charleston found itself the victim of vandalism. Sometime on May 29 or May 30, a coward used a hammer or some other battering object to damage the granite pedestal of a monument to Denmark Vesey in Hampton Park.

A scar that now mars the statue of the enslaved man who bought his freedom and was later hanged in 1822 after a foiled plot to free other enslaved people.

Over the same Memorial Day weekend, vandals sprayed profane graffiti and political symbols at three Daniel Island parks and outside the home of U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C. The perpetrators: Cowards.

Whether the incidents are related is unclear, but both are unacceptable. We hope the cretins who smashed and sprayed are caught and punished quickly and completely.

“We should think about taking it down a notch,” Mace said in a statement after the incident, although it didn’t help that she incorrectly attributed graffiti of an A inside a circle as “antifa” when it is a well-known symbol for anarchy. She’s right, however, that we need to feel safe in our homes, regardless of political beliefs and that everyone should “take a moment to think about their words and their actions at this time. And, it’s not just social media, but our words impact real people and impact real lives.”

Let’s also amplify the words of Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg, who said the acts of vandalism would not be tolerated.

“Here in Charleston, we don’t deface monuments and we don’t vandalize people’s homes,” he said. “Basic human decency is not a political issue – and people who don’t understand that will be punished to the fullest extent of the law.”

If you have any information on the vandals or hear anyone bragging about smashing the monument or spray-painting trash at parks or outside Mace’s home, please contact the Charleston Police Department so it can throw them in jail — and maybe throw away the key for a while.

Gardening is an overlooked staple of Charleston’s culture, with illustrious blooms an assumed detail of most downtown homes but still a point of joy for many of us. Moderate winters provide ample opportunity for long blooming seasons, but the function should match the feature in our gardens.

Pollinators play an integral role in our local and global ecosystems.

If you enjoy fruits, nuts, vegetables, coffee, cotton or honey, then pollinators should be important to you. (If you don’t enjoy those things, you are likely insufferable and can dismiss this all as hippy nonsense.)

With bee populations plummeting, butterfly numbers in decline and billions fewer Planting native plants, or birds than in decades past, it is time the those that have co-evolved average gardener considers their role.

There are a few ways the Charleston with pollinators in this gardener can improve their garden’s region, will supplement prospects for benefiting local pollinators.

Incorporating perennial plants, or those some of the loss caused by that return each year, will create a reliable food source pollinators can count on. Those habitat destruction. perfect annuals at the local home improvement store may catch your eye now, but they’re life is short and an easy casualty to Charleston’s periodic droughts and blistering heat.

Annuals benefit native wildlife too — but a healthy balance is key.

Utilize annuals to both extend your growing season and to mix things up as the season evolves.

Variety is indeed the spice of life, so diversifying your garden to incorporate the most offerings will attract more pollinators. A multitude of sizes and colors will not only appeal to you, but also to our winged friends. While honey bees are important, so too are small mason bees and wasps. Salvias are a perfect option in this instance, offering seemingly endless colors, sizes, and long-lasting blooms.

poleto Festival USAis rolling into its final week and there are still plenty of exciting things to get out and see. The Woman in Black continues to run through June 13 at Festival Hall. Ephrat Asherie Dance opens on June 9 and runs through the end of the festival as well. And hey, if you can find someone who doesn’t want their ticket, you might even be able to get into the Chamber Music series at the Dock Street Theatre.

But if you’re not ready to venture back out into crowds, or if you can’t get away from home, Spoleto Festival USA has you covered.

There are a handful of virtual options, more now than even when the festival began. And each of these unique experiences are, with one exception, completely free to enjoy from the comfort of your own couch.

That paid exception is The Journey, Scott Silven’s virtual illusionist show. Running June 8-13, audiences will be virtually transported into Silven’s home to enjoy his custom show, designed while Silven was living in his childhood home in Scotland during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Journey debuted in fall 2020 to rave reviews.

Spoleto at Home, as the virtual offerings are collectively known, is also giving audiences the chance to catch up on this year’s Chamber Music series. The perennial Dock Street event has been sold out since well before season 45 kicked off, but the Festival has not wanted anyone to feel left out. So elements of the series have been uploaded to the Spoleto YouTube channel. Audiences can watch excerpts of programs right now, for free, on any device where you can access YouTube. Excerpts vary in length, from 8 minutes to almost half an hour, and will be available for streaming until June 18. Or if you’re hungry for the full show, you can listen to entire concerts on South Carolina Public Radio through their website.

If you’re looking for something other than just performances, you can also get into the virtual profiles that Spoleto has developed for the at home project. Meet the Choir and Meet the Orchestra are both free and streaming, and both give you special behind-thecurtain glimpses into standard Spoleto programming.

Meet the Choir features two digital showcases and five video profiles of master choristers. The first, profiling singer and conductor Andrew Cooper, was a pleasant watch. Cooper speaks about his history with the festival and previous works, before showing off several videos of him performing choral pieces. The editing is very creative as well, as Andrew makes up the entirety of a chorus, playing all the parts and several of the instruments as well. It’s a light and fun presentation of something that could potentially come off as stuffy.

Other streams include conductors Vinroy Brown and Jennah Delp, singers Kyle VanSchoonhoven and Madeline Healy, and two concerts: “Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis” by Herbert Howells and “My Shepherd Will Supply My Need” by Mack Wilberg.

The Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra was not allowed to stage a show during this year’s festival due to COVID-19 protocols, but they are represented in the virtual programming. John Kennedy, resident conductor and director of orchestral activities, has created a site-specific piece called Arden, which premiered online June 5. It is performed by mezzosoprano Naomi Louisa O’Connell, accompanied by piano, violin, viola and cello, and features sounds and footage from the town of Ballyvaughan, Ireland.

The rest of the Meet the Orchestra series features profiles of the members, telling you about their lives and showing small samples of their work. New programs are posted online every day at 5 p.m. until June 13.

There’s plenty to do and get engaged in with Spoleto, whether you can’t make it out of the house or already have other tickets and want to soak up every bit of Spoleto Festival USA you can.

Charleston Poet Laureate Marcus Amaker is one of a handful of poets laureate nationwide awarded a fellowship by the Academy of American Poets.

Amaker receives the award as part of the Academy’s Poet Laureate Fellowship program, established in 2019. the program awards $50,000 grants to poets of merit in civic positions around the country. Poets are expected to undertake projects that prove meaningful as well as educational and advance the advocacy of poetry to a wide audience.

For his fellowship, Amaker will start a state Poets in Schools program, pairing a poet with a school, culminating in an anthology of poems by students Amaker was named Charleston’s first poet laureate in 2016. Amaker has written eight books. His most recent, 2020’s The Birth of All Things, is about Black fatherhood, joy, racism, anxiety, Bjork, Star Wars and love. Amaker is also an electronic musician and an award-winning graphic designer for his work on the national music journal, No Depression. —Michael Smallwood

Scott Silven’s illusions mesmerize in

The Journey

cott Silven can seemingly read minds and has mastered the mystery arts. But the acclaimed illusionist, mentalist and performance artist hasn’t been able to solve one mystery for the last year: how to escape Scotland.

Silven was on tour when the coronavirus pandemic lockdowns began around the world in March 2020. He got on the last flight out of Seattle, thinking it would be nice to see his family for a few weeks — and has not left his childhood home outside of Glasgow since.

During the first two weeks back, Silven canceled his remaining in-person shows for the year. But returning home also inspired him to begin creating The Journey, which will be part of Spoleto Festival USA’s Spoleto at Home digital offerings, starting June 8.

“It was in that moment that I realized coming back to Scotland, this place that inspired what I do today, was pretty powerful,” Silven said. “It was a place I hadn’t been to in some time, and it felt unfamiliar to me. And I had this innate sense of nostalgia.”

Spoleto participants will join 30 others from around the city — or even the world — for an intimate yet collective experience as The Journey transports them from wherever they are into Silven’s home.

Custom-made technology created for The Journey projects the audience onto the walls of Silven’s home and allows the illusionist to pull members up as holograms that “stand” beside him.

“We bring the audience into the room for the first time,” he said, “and it’s a very dramatic moment where I touch the wall and the walls of the space fall away and the audience suddenly appears.”

He said the sense of sharing intimate moments with people virtually, while all remaining in our own respective spaces, intrigued him.

“There’s something really powerful about people being confined to their homes at this time, surrounded by objects of meaning and with the time to focus on themselves,” Silven said. “I knew I wanted to create an experience that explored those themes.”

Silven said The Journey, which premiered in fall 2020, has given him a chance to connect with people from places like Charleston, Hong Kong or New York in new ways.

“Even before the show, I’ve always felt we were living in such fragmented times where we entirely exist within our own heads or in thoughts,” he said. “I don’t think that’s a healthy way to be. And, I

Silven worked with what he called a creative “dream team” — director Allie Winton Butler, set designer Jeff Sugg and Tony Award-winning sound designer Gareth Fry — to bring The Journey to life in a matter of months. Sugg, who traveled to Scotland last year to collaborate with Silven in person, said the use of technology within The Journey was one of the things that interested him most about the show.

“I think what makes this work stand out is that it embraces the technology and implicates it into the essence of the storytelling,” Sugg said. “The tech and the show are inseparable.”

Butler, for her part, said the show “has really made me consider how extraordinary

projections can be both from an artistic and technological perspective.”

However, Silven said, the completely remote experience has led to some viewers feeling a little more casual about the show than others.

“I selected someone to be projected into the room,” he said. “And, the lady I selected was at the McDonald’s drive-thru at the time of the show, just taking her order from the side of the screen as she was interacting with me, which I thought was kind of incredible. It was very engaging and got a great reaction, but it made me realize pretty quickly, ‘Oh yeah, this is a new form of theater that I have to get used to.’ ”

Nina SossamonPogue dreamed herself into her dream job

The comparisons between the model home and the dream house hang in the air when you visit with former TV anchor Nina Sossamon-Pogue.

The 2,400-square-foot model home, which literally was the showcase house for the Mixson neighborhood in North Charleston, has lots of upgrades that highlight possibilities that could be incorporated into any home built in the new village — walls of brick, wood and sheetrock; stacked kitchen cabinets and a tiled backsplash, both of which go to the ceiling. The home, which has a huge square marble kitchen island, is comfortable, open and inviting.

The dream home, which Nina and husband Ben Pogue sold less than a year ago, offered 4,000 square feet of space on three acres on Hobcaw Creek in Mount Pleasant. It had everything, including a dock on the creek with a place to put in a kayak for a morning paddle or serve as a setting for a chilled glass of wine at sunset. There was even a music room for a grand piano and an array of guitars.

“Ben plays everything,” Nina jokes. “I play the radio. I have many talents, but music is not one of them, although I play a mean triangle. Who knew the triangle was in every song?”

They moved into the model home in July and it fits their emptynester lifestyle better, now that their blended family of three children is grown and starting their lives. The grand piano is living with another family member, but guitars are cradled in the open space that stretches the length of the house and includes a living room, dining room and kitchen.

“All that we need is this. We spend all of our time cooking and talking in the kitchen. It has an office and everything was brand new.”

New challenges and opportunities

People who have lived in the Charleston area for a few years know Nina and Ben from television. Nina, who came to the area in 1992 as a reporter for WCBD, was voted favorite news anchor for 10 years running in the City Paper’s Best of Charleston contest. Ben, now a lawyer, was a meteorologist at the station for eight years before he eventually went to law school and got into local politics.

They married in 2005.

You might not know that as a teen-ager, Nina was an elite gymnast on the USA Gymnastics Team. While she didn’t win a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team, she competed competitively at Louisiana State University before being injured.

“I was a gymnast, so obviously that sport taught me how to perform under pressure, but more importantly, it taught me how to be coachable, to accept criticism and to make adjustments to improve,” she says. “Plus with gymnastics, you learn how to literally fall on your face or land on your head and get up and try again.”

The lesson served well after she was, as she wrote in a bio, “in a devastating accident involving her co-anchor’s baby boy in the family’s driveway. Going from beloved news anchor to the person driving that car almost ended her life story, but the baby miracu-

lously survived, and she and her co-anchor went back on the air together.”

Two books and a podcast

The accident is a fulcrum in her 2020 book, This Is Not the End: Strategies To Get You Through the Worst Chapters of Your Life. It’s also part of her work now following 12 years of corporate success at Benefitfocus, a local software startup that made good.

Her work, which includes giving keynote speeches and a new podcast, focuses on resiliency — on bouncing back after loss, tragedy or failure, and developing strategies to manage adversity.

“I’ve had a very public life, from being a gymnast to being on television to working for a software company,” she says.

“I became the go-to person to help people at the tough times because I’ve learned how to manage the losses.”

The 143-page book includes seven coping skills and tools for people to use to move to the next chapters of their lives.

In addition to moving her home during the pandemic, Nina published a second book, But I Want Both: The Working Mom’s Guide to Creating a Life She Loves. Like the first , it offers strategies to help people move forward. In this case, it focuses on helping “high-achieving women see that there is no work life balance — it is all just life, and they can make their life amazing.”

During the pandemic, as there were no live keynote speaking jobs, she added something new: a podcast called “THIS Seriously Sucks, the right podcast when life goes seriously wrong.” So far, she’s got 16 episodes on Spotify, including discussions on homelessness, narcissism, sexual assault, loss and addiction with people from all over the country.

The episodes, which generally range from 30 minutes to 45 minutes, have been a way to keep doing the work that she’s enjoying — guiding people through crises and helping them to build resiliency. She’s looking forward to continuing the podcast while she gets back on the road to resume keynote presentations on pushing through adversity.

“This was my dream job, and now I’m doing it.”

Hobby: Distance cycling. Started doing the Ride to Remember with the Alzheimer’s Association when my Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Training and then riding that 252 miles through the backroads of the state of South Carolina (from Greenville to Charleston) is a special time with some really great people. I got hooked on distance cycling.

Favorite food: Popcorn is my go-to happy food, but my favorite food experience is picking boiled blue crab with a cold beer nearby.

Favorite dessert: Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams on King.

Salty caramel: It is ridiculously good.

How to grow carnivorous plants

By Toni Reale, special to Digs Carnivorous plants have fed our imaginations since the dawn of our time. Charles Darwin called the most popular variety, the Venus flytrap, the “most wonderful plant on earth.” Even the film Little Shop of Horrors entranced viewers with its memorable, larger-than-life carnivorous character.

Lure, trap and digest

All carnivorous plants have some sort of morphological mechanism to trap insects. Pitcher plants have a pitfall trap. Sundews use a sticky trap. Venus flytraps use a snap trap. These plants need a way to lure insects into their traps. According to the International Society on Carnivorous Plants, some species secrete a sweet nectar, some have an attractive fragrance, some have hairs that point in a direction where the insect can’t come out, and some even have special “windows” in their traps that disorient their prey. Once these sneaky plants capture their prey, they must digest it so the nutrients can be absorbed into their tissues. Digestion can be accomplished using the plants’ own digestive secretions, or with help from internal bacteria, much like humans use stomach bacteria to digest food.

How you can create a backyard bog

Jennifer Holstein of Summerville is a local dedicated enthusiast who has been growing carnivorous plants for more than 15 years and educating people about them through mini-bog workshops.

She recently shared her tips for creating a bog of your own.

• Get a decent-sized plastic container with holes at the bottom; shorter and wider pots are better. If you want to go big, get a plastic baby pool and put holes in the bottom of it. Be sure to steer clear of terracotta, as they leach minerals.

• Create your own bog soil by mixing together two parts peat moss, one part sand, and one part perlite (be certain it doesn’t contain Miracle-Gro products).

• Get your soil really wet and continue mixing as you create your mud.

• Put into your container and plant your carnivorous plants into it. The more varieties, the better.

• Place your container on a tray where you can bottomwater these plants. Ensure that the tray is always filled with water.

It is best to place your container in the sunniest part of your yard. If you grow indoors, lighting must be very bright or you can supplement with grow lights.

As long as the bog stays wet and has plenty of sunshine and bugs, it will grow all summer and into the fall, Holstein said. And, she added, it will come back year after year.

Like all plants, there will be a dormancy period from roughly Thanksgiving to Valentine’s Day. During this time, old pitchers can be trimmed back.

Don’t worry, Holstein said, if your flytraps turn black or your sundews curl up. They are simply storing up their energy for the spring. She’s found success with leaving them outside during this time, but if there is a deep freeze, bring your bog onto a covered porch. All this work pays off because when spring comes, these plants emerge with the most incredible and unique flowers, she said.

Sourcing carnivorous plants

There are many ways to start your carnivorous plant collection, but harvesting from the wild is not one of them.

According to the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, it is illegal to take any plants or seeds from any protected lands that they manage. While it may seem like a harmless act, these carnivorous plants are part of an ecosystem and removing one does damage to all.

There are local and online purveyors of ethically sourced carnivorous plants. Holstein cautioned against getting plants from any non-regulated source or grower, such as flea markets or Facebook Marketplace, without seriously looking into their sourcing. A large majority of carnivorous plant growers are committed to preserving them, and there is continuous conversation about conservation in their industry. But you don’t want to be caught in any poacher’s trap that does way more harm than good.

There are more thanover 625 truly carnivorous plant species.

Add to that another 1,000 that scientists consider sub-carnivorous varieties in the world. According to Clemson University, South Carolina is home to 25 native carnivorous plant species.

These include types of pitcher plants, sundews, flytraps, butterworts and more.

Interestingly, the Carolinas are the only place on earth that Venus flytraps grow naturally. Carolina bays, which are elliptical wetlands oriented in the same direction, are a scientific phenomenon and home to many carnivorous plants. These plants prefer the nutrient-deficient soils found at the edges of bays and other bogs. Sunlight is plentiful in their natural habitat which allows these plants Reale to use photosynthesis as their primary energy mechanism. But scientists believe the lack of soil nutrients was the impetus for the carnivorous adaptation.

Veganism is on the rise nationwide, but is Charleston ready to join the movement?

bstaining from consuming products with animal origins is nothing new — people have been doing it for years.

But veganism has recently gained a small foothold in Charleston, a city that still only boasts a handful of all-vegan eateries. What some describe as a trend is much more than that for several local restaurateurs and advocates, who consider vegan eating as a healthier option that benefits animals and the environment.

“It’s the right time to be in Charleston and work with the whole vegan, plant-based situation,” said Nordic Cooking owner Louise Rakers. “I definitely think that as awareness starts happening, people are going to open up so much more to trying that cuisine.”

Rakers’ Daniel Island-based company delivers vegan meal kits and hosts cooking classes, a format that allows her to simplify a type of eating that is intimidating to some.

“One of the most important things, and I teach this in almost every cooking class we have, is teaching people to add umami to the actual dish,” Rakers said, describing the word that means “essence of deliciousness” in Japanese. “Umami is that flavor you’re most likely missing whenever you are not eating meat.”

All-vegan King Street destination Neon Tiger has made a name for itself by recreating meaty dishes minus, well, the meat.

Charleston seems to be on board with vegan reubens, “chicken” sandwiches and pizzas, Adamson as evidenced by Neon Tiger’s “Best New Restaurant” nod from City Paper readers. And according to owner John Adamson, who’s known for previous ventures like Rarebit and The Americano, Charleston was in desperate need of a vegan eatery that was “enticing enough to get nonvegans to come in and hopefully blow them away,” he said.

“My first thought [when I went vegan] was that I need to move somewhere else,”

recalled Adamson, who says he’s become a vegan “activist” since ditching meat and animal-derived products in 2017.

“But then, really, what I realized is that I’m in the exact place that I need to be. I wanted to make it super approachable, super hip, and luckily I have it in me to design spaces that people want to enjoy,” he said. “I needed something that was bigger, and Neon Tiger provided that.”

Basic Kitchen executive chef Charlie Layton has been an on-and-off vegan for 10 years, he told the City Paper, but shortly after joining the breezy Wentworth Street restaurant in 2020, he made the commitment to veganism.

“I made the switch about six months ago. I found cooking professionally, it was really hard for me to not try everything,” said Layton, adding that he still tastes the handful of non-vegan dishes Basic Kitchen serves on any given day. “Basic Kitchen has been that place where there’s something for everyone, so I want to cater to that.”

When Basic Kitchen does serve seafood, it’s sustainably sourced — Layton orders from Abundant Seafood owner Mark Marhefka — and the restaurant’s beef comes from a small East Tennessee ranch with pasture-raised cows.

“I’m really against the factory farming idea for both meat and vegetables — something that’s very clearly damaging our environment,” Layton said. “We’re really the first generation that’s seeing the effects of massproduced dairy and crops, and now we’re seeing the full effect of that on people’s health.”

Factory farms, or concentrated animal feeding operations, maximize profits by raising animals in confined, primarily indoor environments. This treatment is coupled with factory farming’s toll on the environment — manure buildup can cause hazardous emissions, and runoff can pollute nearby waterways.

But meat can be raised and consumed responsibly, local farmers and experts say, something that’s particularly important in the Lowcountry, where many people reside in food deserts.

Anthony Mirisciotta, who has been a vegetarian for 20 years, said, “It goes back to this relationship with local producers,” he said. “You can really understand how they’re operating on their land, and ultimately, it’s much better than buying a nameless cut of meat or cheese at the store that may have come from a massive spot.”

Chucktown Acres head farmer Alex Russell says good land stewardship is what sets his 70-acre McClellanville farm Mirisciotta and other “regenerative” farms like it apart from mass meat producers.

“That basically means that every day and every year, we’re making this land more healthy,” said Russell, who manages 12 cows, 25 hogs, 500 laying Russell hens and 2,000 meat chickens.

At Chucktown Acres, the animals move throughout the farm, and manure they leave behind serves as fertilizer for the soil.

“The main centerpiece of everything we do is grass-fed and finished beef, so they don’t get any grain. When you come to the farm, probably the first thing you’ll notice is the air smells really good,” Russell said. “The main reason that is is [because] we practice aggressive rotation with our animals, so they move to a different spot everyday.”

Local farms like Chucktown Acres are constantly in danger of being swallowed up by the growing factory farm industry, but Russell says they’re always trying to adapt.

“The farms that are doing things right, we’re always trying to come up with different phrases to separate ourselves from grocery store meats,” said Russell, describing the dilution of the word “sustainable” in the last five years. “That’s why we’re so aggressive about farm tours and having people come to the farm.”

Start Small

A vegan diet can seem daunting at first, but Adamson, Rakers and Layton have some suggestions for those looking to dip their toes into plant-based eating.

“I tend to go with a celebration of vegetables, rather than a meat replacement idea,” Layton said. “Especially in Charleston, there’s so many local farms, and it’s the best produce I’ve ever been lucky enough to have access to.”

Adamson said he started out “eating two or three Beyond Burgers a week,” but he quickly learned lentils, cashews, chickpeas and sunflower seeds provided him with the protein he needed.

“All these things are so readily available these days,” he said. “You’re literally going into the grocery store and just shopping in a different section.”

Rakers agrees, saying that it’s important for home cooks experimenting with vegan cuisine to make a few pantry swaps so they have plant-based substitutes on hand.

“I think that’s why it can be overwhelming when they look at a recipe that’s plant-based because there’s so many ingredients that they might not have,” she said.

“It’s all about building that pantry staple and changing things out. Once you are used to operating within that cuisine, then you already have it.”

Vegan eating is on the rise in major cities like New York, where Eleven Madison Park — a restaurant boasting three Michelin stars — started serving a meatless menu when it reopened June 10.

Rakers — who estimates 80% of her clients are not fully plant-based — said she’s confident that a food-focused city like Charleston will continue to welcome new vegan chefs and restaurants.

“I feel like people here in the Lowcountry, they love food, and they do not discriminate. I have been met with so much positivity and just an open mind to trying it,” she said. “I think the most important thing in the whole sense of talking about plantbased food is don’t judge anybody. It’s easier to just listen and accept that we’re different and then people explore that it’s not so bad by trying it. I would always encourage people to just be mindful.”

Ryan Lill reinvents his sound with ‘Ocean’

Hot Mustard drops funky new single Local instrumental recording duo Hot Mustard released a new single, “Jerkwater Strut,” June 4. The song displays the signature funk-inspired style of producer/guitarist Jack Powell and bassist Nick Carusos, but with a twist — it features Dave “Smoota” Smith of TV on the Radio on the trombone and Jordan McLean of Antibalas on the trumpet.

The finished track melds a rhythmic hip-hop beat with a cinematic brass line and Motown-esque guitar licks.

Paired with the single in perfect artistic harmony is an animated music video, which was created by Powell under the moniker Opus Thimble. —Kate Bryan

Charleston singer-songwriter Ryan Lill has released three singles this year. The first, “Dirty,” is an unabashed ode of lust that finds Lill crooning, “I’ll do anything you want me to,” more than a little suggestively. The second, “Adore Me,” is an irresistible kiss-off that centers around the line, “Keep my name out your mouth.”

Both songs are shiny, catchy and refreshingly adult slices of electronic pop.

Lill’s newest single, “Ocean,” is the polar opposite of those songs. A majestic, dramatic piano-and-voice ballad, the song uses the ocean as a metaphor for fighting onward when you feel alone or ostracized.

“When they chase you like the tides are rolling in,” Lill sings as the song begins, “gotta keep your sails cast to the wind.”

Lill said that the song was written very intentionally.

“I’d kind of focused my career more on pop recently,” he said, “But this song just kind of came to me. I typically don’t watch TV, but I’d started watching Outer Banks, which is filmed here in town. And, I just thought to myself that some of the things happening on the show are indicative of how my life was. I didn’t know how to really fit in anywhere.”

Keeping that feeling in mind, Lill sat down at the piano to write.

“I feel like the ocean is beautiful, but it can kill you,” he said. “So I took some time and started writing about my experience of nobody wanting you in this town, but you know you’re meant for something different, so you gotta ride the wave; you got to keep your head above the undertow. And, that just formed into ‘Ocean.’ I feel like I knew exactly what I wanted to say when I sat down, and it feels good. It feels very authentic.”

The video is just as dramatic and stripped-down as the song, featuring a lost-looking Lill wandering along the shoreline, emoting to the roaring ocean.

Quite a changeup from his previous clip for “Adore Me,” in which he played a female, 80s-style aerobics instructor and hammed it up for the cameras.

Ryan Lill’s stripped-down new single embodies the ‘80s music he grew up listening to. “Ocean” is just the beginning for him as he dives into writing songs that represent his identity.

“Yeah, that video is definitely different than ‘Adore Me,’ which I had blast filming,” Lill said with a laugh. “I just wanted it to be a little more raw and just more focused on the lyrics and not focus on me trying to act something out or me making people laugh, like I try to always do. I just wanted to be more focused on this really pretty view of the ocean. I wanted it to be more about the music.”

Of course, while there wasn’t a lot of humor in front of the cameras, behind the scenes it was a different story. “It was weird filming in front of people who were walking on the beach,” he said. “It was a pretty crowded beach day, so trying to find shots where it looks like you’re alone on the beach is almost impossible. And, it’s odd because you’re singing to a backing track and people are just walking by you, like, ‘What the hell is this guy doing?’”

All three of the songs Lill has released this year have been markedly different from his previous, more acoustic-guitar work on the 2017 album, Burn This Bridge, and he says that he’s essentially trying to reinvent himself as a more honest musician and songwriter.

“I think that instead of having this idea of going into the studio to write something that is specifically radio friendly, or going into the studio to write something that reaches just one specific demographic—I’m starting to write music that I want to hear.

I feel like, now, I’m starting to write for my own voice; there’s been this power shift in my life where I feel like I’m making what I wish somebody would have written that I could hear when I was growing up as a gay kid in South Carolina.”

And, what that kid wanted to hear was electronic pop and dark, dramatic ballads by the boatload.

“I grew up in a house where I was number six of seven kids,” Lill said. “And VH-1 was always on, so I was always listening to Madonna, Whitney Houston, Duran Duran and Depeche Mode. My mom and dad were huge ‘80s nuts, so all of our home videos are of me and my siblings roller skating down the hall to the top 40 hits of the ‘80s. So I feel like it’s been really cathartic coming full circle. I used to listen to these ‘80s piano ballads, and now I’ve kind of gone back to the roots of that.”

Singer-songwriter and Hootie & the Blowfish lead guitarist Mark Bryan’s new single, “Let Your Soul Light Shine,” features a special music video filmed at MUSC as a tribute to its frontline healthcare workers.

Inspiration for the song off his new solo album, Midlife Priceless, stemmed from experiences in Bryan’s own life. “I was getting divorced, Hootie was on a hiatus — so the identity I had for years was being stripped away,” he said. —KB

New music video from folk rocker Danielle Howle Veteran singer-songwriter Danielle Howle released a new single, “Something Better Now,” to express her trust that goodness is always present.

The folk rock ballad is accompanied by a simplistic music video centered around nature, inspired by a slice of Francis Marion National Forest that Howle knows well after holding many songwriter retreats there with help from Awendaw Green.

All the horns in the track were recorded live. Howle’s deep voice drives the intricate instrumentation that is grounded by her acoustic guitar, and bandmates Gary Green on drums and Derek Brakefield on bass. Mark Bryan contributed keys and vocals.

the last year, listening back to it, was the sound of the crowd, just hearing everyone being slammed up against each other, not knowing that just a few weeks from then we were all going to be holed up in our houses and not seeing people for a long time.”

As a fan of bootleg acoustic records, Osborne wanted to not only emulate that simplistic, organic sound with Rogue Acoustic, but also present the vulnerability and excitement that comes with trying to win over a crowd without the benefit of amplified guitars and crashing drums. It may not have a lot to it as far as instrumentation, he said, but the emotion is all there.

“To me it’s got a lot of interesting features,” he said of Rogue Acoustic.

Susto frontman Justin Osborne was thinking about what his next live release would look like — he’s put out supplemental material before, like Susto Stories in 2018, before Ever Since I Lost My Mind. He wanted to do a project that would have a similar rawness, but be unique to where he’s at in his career currently. So, he decided, “Let’s capture the vibe at Royal American on a Friday night.”

“Anyone familiar with the Charleston music scene knows what it was like prepandemic to go to a packed Royal show, what the energy was like,” he said. It is this atmosphere, along with just Osborne’s acoustic guitar and stripped-down vocals that come together on Susto’s new live album, Rogue Acoustic, recorded in February 2020.

“Over the last yearplus, I whittled down what were the best performances from that night — some covers, one unreleased song and different versions of songs across the catalog, with special guests that either had something to do with the writing of that song or someone who reflects the spirit of the song.”

Hunter Park of She Returns From War sings with Osborne on the Rolling Stones cover, “Dead Flowers.” Former Susto member Johnny Delaware, now of The Artisanals, jumped on stage for “Mystery Man.” “Hard Drugs” is performed with Band of Horses frontman Ben Bridwell.

Susto’s own Dries Vandenberg sits in on harmonies for “Jah Werx.”
