State expands summer meals Coalition urges less violent, more just as food insecurity rises
News 06.30.2021
The South Carolina Department of Education announced a change to its annual free summer food program on June 21. Rebranded as “Summer Break Cafe,” the program, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, provides children with free, accessible meals over summer break, when school lunches are no longer available. Feeding America reports that 1 in 7 children in S.C. suffer from food insecurity, defined as the inability to provide the necessary amount of food for all members of a household due to a lack of resources. Prior to the pandemic, food insecurity among Charleston County kids was decreasing, according to Feeding America. In 2017, 16.2% of kids were food insecure, which went down to 11.1% in 2019. In fact, the organization reported food insecurity numbers were at their lowest rates in 20 years nationwide prior to the COVID-19 outbreak. But unemployment and inflated food prices upended some of that progress, and Feeding American projects the 2020 child food-insecurity rate in Charleston County is back to about 16.1%. The trend isn’t unique to Charleston County. Dorchester County saw a similar pattern with child food insecurity rates decreasing from 15.0% in 2017 to 11.0% in 2019. Now, the 2020 rate is estimated to be 15.6% — even higher than pre-pan-

The Justice for All Coalition, a group of Charleston-area advocacy organizations, sent a memo to Charleston County Sheriff Kristin Graziano, Solicitor Scarlett Wilson and county council members June 22 outlining proposals for reforms the group believes would make the county safer and more just for residents. The memo, released partially in response to the January death of Jamal Sutherland, outlines concrete steps that county leaders should take to reduce the likelihood of such an event happening again. The memo also includes further actions for Graziano that would transform the sheriff’s office into a model for other departments throughout the state. “Jamal’s death was the result of intentional decisions by our political leaders to turn police into a ‘solution’ for those experiencing a mental health crisis, substance use, housing insecurity and a host of other issues they’re overly relied upon for,” Charleston Black Lives Matter organizer Marcus McDonald said in a press release. “We must wake up to the ineffectiveness of the criminal justice system. Charleston County Council must prioritize funding for mental healthcare and other supportive services over punishment and criminalization.” Participating organizations include: The ACLU of South Carolina, Black Liberation Fund, Black Voters Matter, Charleston Immigrant Coalition, Charleston Activist Network, Charleston BLM, Lowcountry Action Committee, Lowcountry Black Leadership Coalition, SC4CJR, Carolina for All and the Racial Justice Network. Proposals to end straight-ticket voting, expand early voting and reform redistricting are among the changes floated by Democratic candidate for governor Joe Cunningham last Friday. Meanwhile, nationwide, conservatives in Congress and Republican-controlled state legislatures continue ramping up efforts to nix expanded voting procedures that voters got a taste of in 2020. Cunningham said his 10-point plan would “protect and expand voting rights in South Carolina,” and also includes automatic voter registration at 18, allowing voters to register and cast a ballot on the same day, 30 days of early voting, Cunningham an expansion of ID types that can be used to vote and making Election Day a state holiday. The plan would also eliminate witness signatures for mail-in ballots, make ballot drop boxes available in every county and invest to cut down on lines. “Right now, South Carolina has some of the most restrictive and archaic voting laws in the country, and when I’m governor, that’s going to change,” Cunningham said in a statement. “In our state, you can vote with your concealed weapons permit but not your college ID. You have to sign an affidavit swearing that you are unable to vote on election day before you can vote early ... It’s time for our state to lead on voting rights and this plan will help us do just that.” The former congressman is in a threeway race for the Democratic nomination for governor with state Sen. Mia McLeod and activist Gary Votour. Gov. Henry McMaster will seek reelection in 2022. Voting rules are getting attention from Republican lawmakers this year as polls show up to two-thirds of Republican voters believe President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory was illegitimate. No significant voter fraud has been found, but mobs that staged the deadly invasion of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 were there to stop election results from being certified. Republicans in S.C. haven’t mounted a significant push to clamp down on voting rules. But ahead of redistricting in the fall and the 2022 midterm elections, huge Republican majorities in the state House, Senate and statewide elected offices set the stage for significant changes even before the next election. —Sam Spence

A downtown woman was caught on security footage shoplifting a bottle of wine from a nearby grocery store, and police found her sitting on a bench a little more than a block away drinking from the already-half-empty bottle. When officers told her to pour out the alcohol, she reportedly began chugging it. RUNNERS UP In a long report detailing a physical altercation between officers and a man who resisted arrest after trespassing, police said the interaction ended with them “escorting [the offender] to the ground.” Even the cops are angling for that next “America’s Politest City” designation. family the right to return and guaranteeing them the same methodology in determining the cost of rent. Adrienne Riley, with the CHA, said even though the moving can be inconvenient for families, ultimately, the program is for them, and she believes they will be happy with the end result. “This program means, for them, what they’ve been asking for: an up-to-date home to reside in,” she said. “To be able to see the change over time — public housing has been in effect for 80+ years, and with this new overhaul, we would finally be meeting the needs of the people.” Though the City of Charleston works closely with the CHA, officials declined to comment on the program, saying they would likely only repeat what RAD leaders would have already said. City Council members have previously said they supported the adoption of RAD in Charleston, however, despite the challenges of implementation. “I think it is a great program for us to adopt; in the long-run, the families will be happy,” Riley said. “Changes are hard, and I think a lot of times we like to say, ‘This is what we’re used to,’ but as long as we continue to walk the path we are going, they will be OK.”
And in every case so far, she said, none of this has been sprung on the affected families out of nowhere. The process began as early as 2016, when the first proposals were made to the City of Charleston and the first meetings with families in public housing were held. “I started informing them about the meetings to give them information about what would happen, and we had some families who were very excited about the process and available whenever I gave them notice, and we could move forward immediately,” Riley said. “But we had some families who were very frustrated because it’s a long process, and some didn’t understand what exactly was happening.” “To hear the contractors and look at the designs they are making for the residents — how the new house will look for them — that’s so exciting, and I think they would be excited as well,” she said. And, Riley said, Charleston has a lot of catching up to do. Cameron said Charleston’s RAD program was pitched after a few years of waiting cautiously and observing similar programs in other cities as far west as Kentucky and as far north as New York. “We are very late in getting into this project,” Riley said. “Over the last 10 years, RAD has been in a lot of other cities and states, and we are just now finally moving forward.”

Dear politicians, quit naming things after yourselves S
Views 06.30.2021
outh Carolina politicians can’t stop naming things after themselves. This isn’t a new phenomenon, and S.C. elected officials aren’t alone in their egomania, but it’s got to stop. Any local bureaucrat can slap enough backs to ensure a legacy with his or her (mostly his) name etched on a taxpayer-funded building. Let’s let time be the judge of leadership, not buddies on council. A new county services complex will open soon in North Charleston, but it should not be named for any currently serving politician. History is still being written about these guys. Charleston is pockmarked with challenging place names. Arthur Ravenel’s racist insinuations were even too much for TV’s bawdy Southern Charm, yet the landmark bridge named for the former congressman is synonymous with the Holy City. Instead of Boundary Street downtown, we now have Calhoun Street, which memorializes a forefather of secession. Then there’s the fun intersection in West Ashley where the road named for Paul Cantrell, who served a whopping four years in the state legislature, changes to the road named for Glenn McConnell, a leader of the state Senate and proprietor of a Confederate memorabilia store at the time the road was named. A few exits away along the Mark Clark Expressway, Sheriff Kristin Graziano goes to work at the county jail named for the guy she booted from office last year. Not far from the new Leatherman port terminal — named for a sitting and powerful Florence senator — sits the intersection of McMillan and Rivers avenues. Thomas McMillan was the speaker of the state House and an eight-term congressman 100
10
years ago who lived six miles away in Hampton Park Terrace. In Congress, Mendel Rivers was a segregationist eulogized as a champion of “the Southern way,” who helped cover up the 1968 My Lai Massacre, when U.S. troops slaughtered hundreds of Vietnamese villagers. (Not surprisingly, the plaque recently unveiled outside the former federal building named for Rivers, now The Dewberry hotel, bears no mention of My Lai.) Today, the Rivers and McMillan area is a landmark for local government embarrassment. On one side sits the 10-story former naval hospital which Charleston County was forced to buy for $30 million and sell at a loss after clumsy, cocksure legal maneuvers landed the county in a lawsuit. On the other side sits a new social services hub developers are hastily building as part of the deal they made to flip the old hospital into a private-sector cash cow. Of course, local leaders are already clamoring to desecrate the building with some incumbent politician’s name. The proposal by County Councilman Henry Darby to name the building after Council Chairman Teddie Pryor may be well-meaning, but we don’t need any more buildings named for sitting elected officials, particularly when Pryor was intimately involved with the mess over the naval hospital. Lord knows, if there’s one group of local leaders who should take a timeout from naming things after themselves, it’s Charleston County Council. None of us know how our legacies will land when our work is done. But when the history books are written, you can bet your bottom dollar you’ll find them next door at the (wait for it) R. Keith Summey Library on Rivers Avenue.

She feigned disgust as she walked away from Trumpland, with one eye over her shoulder to make sure nobody actually took notice. But she was always coming back. If Haley wants to stay relevant, there are no other options.
Haley was in Iowa last week, where the 2024 GOP primary is already gearing up. Just five months removed from disavowing former President Donald Trump after the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, she was already trying to claw her way back. “Thank goodness for Donald Trump, or we never would have gotten Kamala Harris to the border,” Haley said, scratching at the vice president’s unpopularity among conservatives, according to Politico. A far cry from her description of Trump as having Trump-era “lost any sort of political viability,” the former South credentials are Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador knows she’s in a tough spot. legal currency of the Trump-era credentials are legal currency of the national GOP these days — only a little less volatile than national GOP these Dogecoin. There is just no other way. less volatile than Haley’s already even offered to abandon her 2024 Dogecoin. ambitions if the boss wants back in. The same dynamic is at play for Charleston-area U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace. But in the 1st District, Mace is playing a numbers game, following state and national GOP talking points and fending off primary challengers. Mace took back South Carolina’s only swing district in 2020 with Trump on the ballot, defeating former Rep. Joe Cunningham by 1.2% despite the fact that Joe Biden increased Democratic vote share by 6 percentage points compared to Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Barack Obama in 2012. A Trump love-fest in the primary could bring Trump sentiment into play again for 2022. New congressional maps could be drawn in time to help Mace retain her seat, but that’s up in the air at this point. For now, she’s playing both sides. At the same time Mace is speculating about antifa involvement in vandalizing her house and storming the people’s house, she’s also wading into environmental issues, which seem to be only the bipartisan issues in the 1st District. Of course, Mace also questioned the human role in climate change during the 2020 election, so there’s that. There’s no hedging for Haley. “The days of being nice should be over,” Haley told a crowd of 500 at the Iowa GOP’s annual Lincoln Dinner (not making this up, I promise). “That doesn’t mean we have to be disrespectful. I wear About the heels — it’s not for a fashion statement. I use it for kicking, but I writer … always kick with a smile. Obviously, I like to bring water. I usually bring a soccer ball or something fun to play with because I get kind of bored laying there. And then, I bring two plastic bags, one to put my phone in so I don’t get it sandy, and then another one to collect shells and shark’s teeth.
We always make a stop at either Yous Guys subs or Baguette Magic on Folly Road to stock the cooler. We also try and make big batches of boiled peanuts in the summer. But if we’re ever short on time, we always pull over and grab some boiled peanuts at either Crosby’s or Bert’s Market.

It’s hot as hell. Hopefully you have a few days off work. You’ve probably already mapped out exactly what you’re going to do this holiday weekend. No? Well good thing, because we asked a few friends how they would approach their ideal day in the sun. The idea was simple: You’ve got the essentials covered — sunscreen, towels, swimsuit. What else do you pack in your ultimate beach bag? We’ve got survival tips for everything from a sunrise beach morning
On the way to Isle of Palms: Trader Joe’s to get snacks. I like the plantain chips and the cheese puffs and those little sandwich wraps. On the way to Folly Beach: I always hit up Bert’s on the way to the beach and Chico Feo on the way out. At Bert’s, I usually grab a six pack of beer that I definitely don’t drink on the beach.
If you were on a beach where alcohol was allowed, what’s your ideal beach beer?
Munkle Contigo or the Pizza Pils from Fatty’s.
We’re right in the middle (in Walterboro), an hour from Charleston and an hour from Savannah. So either side, depending on the weather. I go to Charleston in the offseason, especially without the traffic. With two little ones, I always bring some pre-made foods. I’ve definitely been known to order from a lot of hot bars, from a Lowcountry or Gullah restaurant. You just have to pick out what menu items hold the best for the day. We try to bring a little outdoor rug for the kids to just play with. I love the collection of beach stuff that Gullah Renaissance has — they’re fun and inspired by different African American heritage sites. I always just say to bring as much cold water, even frozen water, so you can just cool your body down five degrees.
What’s your “pro move” for a day at the beach?
It’s not a beach thing, per se — it’s kind of old school from when people always used them — but the reflectors for your car windshield. That’s something I didn’t have to worry about as much until I had kids, but it’s hot, man!
What’s your preferred beach?
What’s in your bag?
I gotta eat — I’m an eater. So I get a cooler dedicated for ribs, chicken thighs, chicken wings, stuff like that. And I’ve got a little Traeger Tailgater (grill) and a Traeger Ranger (smoker), and I’ll put it on my platform on my boat. I’ll smoke wings throughout the day while people play Frisbee or play bags or whatever. We bring some tortillas and make some barbecue sauce, pickled onions or pickled cabbage and make some pulled-pork tacos. I can’t go to the beach and drink Natural Light all day. The wife likes Edmund’s Oast seltzers, and I like any of the sours from Revelry because they’re more refreshing.
Any tips for folks joining someone else for a boat day?
Bring your own beverages and bring extra. Also, ask if you should bring your own life jacket. A great gift for a day on the boat headed to the beaches or sandbar is to just bring extra ice.

What’s your preferred beach?

Where do you stop on the way?
Sullivan’s Island or Folly Beach. If I’m feeling like being around people (even though I don’t want to be around people), it’s Folly. But I really prefer Sullivan’s Island. We try to eat our water because you always think about bringing hydrating drinks, but you never think about really getting foods that have a lot of water content — like your cucumbers, like any of your melons and then the fruits that have a lot of vitamin C in them because we’re out in the sun. That’s a must for me: making sure we’re packing hydrating fruits and food. I always take a sarong blanket. Because those light cotton, or cotton-blended sarongs are easier to get sand off of. I don’t even really use towels at the beach, even though I bring them. I usually use my sarong — I’ll have one for myself, one for my son and another one that I can just lay down. They’re very lightweight. I love making food from home. But if I’m going to get food, it’s got to be Dellz or Gnome Cafe. I love their Caesar salad with buffalo seitan.
What’s your “pro move” for a day at the beach?
I love to get to the beach early in the morning. I’m always driving to the end of the beach to find as few people as possible. We try to get there around sunrise. That’s a big thing for me.
Folly Beach. I head out to the Washout on Folly Beach as my spot to go lay in the sun, take a dip, chill out and watch the surfers do their thing! Always Bert’s Market on Folly for a sandwich, snack, some sun-tan lotion, a cold beverage and so on.
Where do you go on Folly?
After I lay out on the beach at the Washout, I like to take a walk out to the lighthouse inlet for a view of the Morris Island Lighthouse. Then I head to Jack of Cups for a late afternoon meal and after that, I end the beach day at Surf Bar for a drink on their patio.
What’s your “pro move” for a day at the beach?
I always freeze the water bottles in advance so I have an ice-cold drink at the beach. I bring a Ziploc bag to put my phone in and some baby powder to rub on my feet postbeach to get the sand right off of them. I also bring a small Bluetooth speaker to play some tunes while on the beach.

Gervais Hagerty lifts the veil on Charleston society with debut novel
Arts 06.30.2021
By Chloe Hogan

Gervais Hagerty paints an intimate portrait of the Charleston elite in her debut novel, In Polite Company. The colorful story takes us behind the walled gardens of historic homes and into the debutante balls and cocktail parties of Charleston’s high society. The novel follows Simons Smythe, a TV producer born into Charleston’s aristocracy, who spends her days off surfing at Folly Beach and crabbing around Edisto Island. With the pastel colors and salty air of Charleston serving as a backdrop, the story revolves around a confusing time in Simons’ life: Her job at the local TV station tests her loyalty to her family and her inner circle. Wedding plans lead to confusion and cold feet. In this time of uncertainty, Simons seeks guidance from her grandmother, Laudie, who shares her rebellious spirit and wide-set eyes. Hagerty, like her main character, grew up in Charleston and has experience producing and reporting local news. “Simons is not me, but like any comingof-age-novel, the feelings are true, even Hagerty though the scenes are made up,” Hagerty explained. “I’ve suffered heartache, and I’ve also fallen in love. My experiences play into my writing. In this way, I’m a little bit of all my characters.” Through her writing, Charleston’s high society becomes a character in itself. And it’s a subject Hagerty knows well. Growing up behind Rainbow Row, the novelist spent her childhood roller-skating in the drawing room and digging for pottery shards in the backyard. Her family has been in Charleston for many generations, and her upbringing was a traditional one. “My parents signed me up for the traditional rites-of-passage: I learned the Lindy Hop at cotillion, and I made my debut in a wedding gown,” she said.
When it hits bookshelves Aug. 17, Hagerty’s literary debut is a rare “peek behind the veil of Charleston’s cobbled streets, Southern charm and pedigreed society,” according to New York Timesbestseller Mary Alice Monroe. “In Polite Company offers a nuanced look at birth and death, privilege and discrimination at odds between generations.” Hagerty wrote the novel to share the beauty of this fabled Southern world, and to analyze the centuriesold power structures at play. The clever Hagerty hopes to “upend the patriarchy a bit” in her writing. When her protagonist is hopeless and distraught, grandmother Laudie “repeatedly and mysteriously” advises her granddaughter to be brave. “I think it’s hard for women to trust their instincts,” Hagerty said. “We are often taught to put aside our dreams for the good of the group. So many cultures and belief systems shape this way of thinking.” Simons eventually learns to embrace bravery — something Hagerty understands as a debut novelist. Hagerty had a “bizarre and strong” impulse to write In Polite Company. As a professor at The Citadel, Hagerty would spend summers and weekends writing. But eventually something had to give for her to dedicate herself to writing in the way she desired. “With a teaching job at The Citadel, two young children and a dream of being a novelist … In order to fully dedicate myself to my writing, I had to leave my
Disability Pride to be celebrated in Charleston HEART Inclusive Arts Community, a collaborative performing and visual arts studio for adults with disabilities, will host the first Disability Pride Month celebration in the city’s history at 1-5 p.m. July 10 at Edmund’s Oast Brewing Co. Charleston will be one of just a few cities in the U.S. to officially recognize Disability Pride, which has been observed in July for the last 30 years. There are still no official observances of the month at any state or national level. The July 10 event will feature live music and entertainment, including performances by HEART, the V-Tones and The Plantation Singers. There will be a Disability Pride Parade, a market of vendors, games, arts and crafts. The celebration is free to the public and suitable for all ages. job,” she said. She advises artists and writers to “dream big, but be smart about it,” explaining that changing her lifestyle to follow her dream has made her spend less, but become richer. “We had fun changing our lifestyle. My husband brews beer; I get around on a cargo bike. When we buy things, we buy secondhand. This way of life aligns perfectly with our environmental goals. We have a rain barrel and solar panels, and we chop wood on the weekends to supplement our heat in the winter. We’ve learned to install flooring, and I built my own bookshelves. We’ve acquired new skills … We sort of became urban homesteaders, and we love it.” Hagerty is “excited and nervous” to share this story about her hometown — the good, the bad and the ugly — but despite her fears, she is proud to have taken a risk. Like her protagonist, Simons Smythe, Gervais Hagerty is proof that some rules are made to be broken.
Nexus: Music at the Crossroads of East and West will be presented July 10-11 at the Gibbes Museum. This chamber music performance is in collaboration with New Muse Concerts. Hanahan coffee shop offers bites, beer and mimosa flights

LG’s by the Creek owner Laura Gresham has had a lifetime of food and beverage experience and always dreamed of opening a coffee shop, so when the opportunity to debut a neighborhood shop and happy hour hangout in a new Hanahan apartment complex came about, she was all in. Gresham named the spot Brew Coffee, Wine and Craft Beer, and hired Krista Magno and Jess Crain to manage the store before opening the doors April 8. “I moved here from New York and worked at Starbucks for a few years. I got all my background in coffee there,” said Magno, whose husband constructed the coffee shop. “Jess ran a coffee shop for a while and has a lot of background in food and bev. All of our experience really works out, so us as a team is really great.” Brew’s soft opening was April 8, followed by its grand opening April 13. And the grand opening was kicked up a notch when Magno noticed a post in the local Facebook group, “Lowcountry Eat Out,” where people were asking where they could find coffee flights. Realizing she could engage customers by adding flights, Magno jumped at the opportunity to get the word out about Brew.
“Doing that on the day of the grand opening sounded like a bit of a nightmare, but I’m so glad we did it,” she said. Photos of Brew’s coffee flights quickly went viral; so much so that they had to limit serving the flights. “We had to hire more staff just to keep up with it,” Magno said. “We will continue to do them 2-4 p.m. until we get situated a little bit more, and then we will open up that window.” Brew’s coffee flight is made up of four, 4-ounce pours of different flavors that they have set for the day. When the City Paper spoke with Magno, Brew’s current flavors were mocha, latte, cold brew and caramel macchiato. “People really seem to love the caramel macchiatos. I feel like that’s probably our most sold espresso drink. Whether it’s hot or cold, people love it,” she said. In addition to its coffee flights, Brew caters to the neighborhood happy hour crowd with wine and beer flights. “It’s not like you’re walking into a bar; it’s more laid back and relaxed,” Magno said. “We have outdoor seating and people come and hang outside with their dogs. We have treats and water bowls for them out there.” Brew even serves mimosa flights for the brunch crowd. “People really just love the flights,” Magno said. “The mimosa flights
are huge. We are constantly bringing in cases of champagne for that ... Our signature mimosa is flavored with hibiscus, and it has an edible hibiscus flower at the bottom of the glass. Everybody loves that and they will order it on its own.” To go along with its numerous drink options, Brew serves grab-and-go salads that are created daily, pastries from Saffron Bakery, fruit cups, parfaits and bagels. Since Magno is a native New Yorker, she has their bagels mailed overnight from Long Island for that authentic deli taste. They also offer a few sandwiches and dessert items. “I think this is a gap that needed to be filled,” Magno said. “People in the neighborhood and beyond are just so happy that we are here — there is nothing like it in Hanahan. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights are really hopping … I know a lot of people that walk through the door and a bunch of them are from Hanahan, but we’ve also had people come from as far as Myrtle Beach, Georgia and Tennessee just for the coffee flights.” Brew is currently open 6 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; 6 a.m.-10 p.m.Thursday and Friday; 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday; and 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday. The shop offers indoor and outdoor seating as well as a drive-thru window.
The management teams behind Semilla, Street Bird Westside, Stars Restaurant and Amen Street Fish & Raw Bar are teaming up for Rudy Royale, a fried chicken-inspired downtown restaurant. After opening with limited hours, the East Bay Street eatery will host a grand opening July 1, co-owner Jillian Schenzel told the City Paper. Schenzel, her brother Mcready Downer, Bill Upson and Heather Greene will lead Rudy Royale — Schenzel and Downer will handle the food and beverage side, while Upson and Greene will manage the restaurant. Former Stars owner Keith Jones, who died in April 2021, first approached Schezel and Downer about a potential partnership in 2020, Schenzel said. Located in the space previously occupied by Pawpaw and Sipango, two restaurant concepts that were owned by Jones, the restaurant is an ode to the restaurateur, whose nickname was Rudy. Rudy Royale’s fried chicken is made using a recipe specific to the Lowcountry-inspired restaurant, which serves whole, and two-piece fried chicken meals. Rudy Royale is open for lunch and dinner Thursday-Sunday, and it will expand its hours after July 1. For more information, visit rudyroyale.com. —Parker Milner
Rusty Bull teams up with Charleston Battery for ‘Striker’s Wit’ brew
North Charleston brewery Rusty Bull Brewing Co. has created a Charleston Battery-inspired brew that will be sold at home games, the brewery and select retail locations, the minor league soccer team announced last week. The “Striker’s Wit” is a “light-bodied Belgian witbier” brewed using Palmetto Malt, South Carolina’s first and only malting business. This isn’t the first time Rusty Bull has brewed a beer for a local sports team: You’ve probably seen cans of its BellyItcher blonde ale at Charleston RiverDogs baseball games. The Striker’s Wit will be available at the brewery and all remaining home games at the Battery’s Patriots Point stadium.—PM

Kween Katt will compile songs to explain numerology theories for numbers 111 through 999 on her upcoming album, 61989: A Juneteenth Album
Kween Katt’s new single, ‘4:44,’ arrives with a lesson behind it

Local hip-hop artist Kween Katt is back with another installment of conscious rap in her new single, “4:44” — the latest in a succession of songs that explore numerology off her upcoming album 61989: A Juneteenth Album. According to Kween, “61989 is breaking down all of the numbers that we see, which are called angel numbers.” Other singles include “5:55,” “11:11,” “3:33” and “222.” “When I started coming into the knowledge, I had to do a lot of research when I was seeing all these numbers all the time,” Kween said. She’s taken classes in order to gain a balanced perspective of numerology, which is the belief in a divine coincidence between numbers and events. “If you’re seeing 444, it could be that you lost a loved one and they are getting your attention, or that it’s time to build something. Four-four-four is about community,” she said of the new single. The song begins: “With 444, your angels are really letting you know to be encouraged and that they’re right there with you. Quiet the mind and listen. Angels can’t work without permission.” Kween’s songwriting process involves a lot of studying, she said, so she can bring an explanation of numerology to listeners
that breaks down the significance of each angel number starting with 111 and ending with 999. “I want to put out a song for each number, that way you can walk away from each song knowing what each one means,” she said. Kween prefers a simplistic atmosphere for her lyrics. “When it comes to music like this, where I’m putting out a message, I like loops,” she said of the production process. She has been working with a handful of beat makers in a mobile studio setting to put together the album. “The type of music I do doesn’t fit in with a lot of the artists in my area,” she said. “My music is more of a teaching style. I don’t fit in at a club scene. So I had to start making my own events. I wanted to create an environment when you’re being educated, entertained and having fun.” Kween started events such as the annual Afrikan Konciousness Festival, and this year’s Freedom Conference. The Konciousness fest, back for the seventh time Oct. 23, is an event held in honor of African identities. She’s seen participation in the festival dwindle after a large turnout for the debut event, which took place after the massacre at Emanuel AME. “Last year was the first time everybody started talking about Juneteenth, but for seven years, I’ve been screaming Juneteenth. When it comes
to our culture, Charleston is behind.” The Freedom Conference on July 31 in Moncks Corner will focus on empowering individuals to take ownership of themselves and take advantage of resources — such as submitting proper paperwork. In her rarch, she’s found that there was not only significant genocide on paper, but also a lack of consistent representation in historical record-keeping. “Like with a lot of our grandparents, it says American Indian or straight American, it doesn’t say African American or Black,” she said. “These terms were given to us later. It makes it harder to know who we really are because we’ve been given so many names. That’s why I’m doing the Freedom Conference.” “I call it the Freedom Conference because all my life I’ve been searching for freedom. I didn’t know what I needed to be free.” She expounds on this concept in her book, #NoReligion. “I ended up changing my last name to Huria when my wife and I got married. Instead of one of us taking each other’s last name, we created our own. I wanted to create a legacy since a lot of [our family] still doesn’t know their own — our parents are still trying to find their grandparents. By creating our name we are creating our identity.” Like she says in “4:44,” her new single: “Learn self, then do for self.”
Local rockabilly act Jared Petteys & the Headliners will lead an all-local show July 3 at the Tin Roof with heavy-blues band Sill Crow and singer-songwriter Don Merckle. Pettys will perform in a three-piece with drummer Chad Soloman and bassist McCarthy Fitch. Petteys, who was highlighted in Gretsch Guitars Artist Spotlight of the Month in May 2021, is looking forward to debuting a few new tracks, as well as some signature favorites off the band’s 2020 album, I Ain’t Waiting. Concertgoers can expect an original rockabilly sound with a high-energy, modern twist. —Kate Bryan
Short Division celebrates release of new song ‘Toe the Line’ at Burns Alley
To celebrate the release of its new single, “Toe the Line,” Charleston alt-punk band Short Division is holding a release show at Burn’s Alley July 11 with local groups Blue Ricky, Abrevity and Love Taco along with uptempo rock band Poor Richards from Jacksonville Beach. The emo-influenced act is composed of guitarist and lead vocalist Brandon Crockett, bassist and background vocalist Alex Hunter, and drummer Jeffrey O’Brien. The band released an EP, You Do the Math, at the tail end of 2019, and has spent 2020 restructuring its members and crafting a new collection of songs. —KB

The summer celebration, which is produced by iHeartMedia Charleston’s 103.5 WEZL-FM and has previously featured stars like Trace Adkins and Kip Moore, is the perfect way to kick off 4th of July. —KB

Keyboardist Ross Bogan crosses into another genre with four-piece band Lureto, the easy-listening instrumental music is a distinct departure from synthwave sounds of Doom Flamingo He’s also working on an original with local producer Wolfgang Zimmerman, and for the first time, he’ll be singing. “I’ve been writing songs for forever with lyrics, but never put any of them out. This was another pandemic thing where we had a lot of time on our hands,” he said. Speaking of which, he and Human Resources bassist Aaron Utterbeck also put together an auxiliary rehearsal space at Coast Records called “The Trading Floor” for future endeavors. Bogan’s tendency to have many side projects is what happens when gigging musicians are told to stay inside and do nothing during a pandemic: “We are like, ‘Okay we’ll start another concept under another alias.’ And then things are opening back up, and we’re like, ‘Wow we are in 17 things now.’” —Chelsea Grinstead

Local keyboardist Ross Bogan started playing different gigs around the city back when he was a freshman at College of Charleston, and he hasn’t stopped since. He toured for several years with multiple bands, while keeping up with local projects including experimental act Robotrio. “Charleston has a deep creative well, and there’s a lot of amazing world class musicians that I’ve gotten to play with over the years,” he said. In fall 2018, Bogan ended up playing an after-show for Umphrees McGee in a group pulled together by bassist Ryan Stasik — a group now known as synthwave band Doom Flamingo that has steadily built a presence in the local scene. His newest project, Lureto, an instrumental outfit with guitarist Wallace Mullinax, drummer Jonathan Peace and bassist Ben Mossman, is a different energy from Doom Flamingo’s fantastical dark synth. “It’s got a slower, psychedelic feel,” he said of Lureto, which offers a lower-key listening experience similar to the atmospheric surf rock of Khruangbin. “I love bands that you can just set it and forget it — you know what you’re gonna get every time when you play it.” The four-piece dropped its debut single, “Pew Pew,” recorded at Coast Records, and will have an EP out this summer in collaboration with Fairweather Studio. “For Lureto, we got in the room and just started playing and then pieced all the songs together with different improvisational ideas, like grabbing different puzzle pieces,” he said of the recording process. “It was a shotgun method of recording, and leaving a little bit more up to chance definitely shaped the music. The pandemic was a slow and introspective time, so we came out with this really moody music.”
