Outgoing SC ACLU leader says lots of work left, time to ‘dig in’
Knaack joined ACLU of South Carolina in early 2020

Frank Knaack is stepping down as executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of South Carolina (ACLU) and moving to New Hampshire for a similar position, where he will also be closer to family. Knaack joined the South Carolina chapter in January 2020, helping guide the ACLU response after last year’s protests following George Floyd’s killing, a tough local election, pandemic legislative battles, the fallout from Jamal Sutherland’s death in county custody and more. Knaack found his place with the ACLU more than 20 years ago in Washington, D.C., where he said he fell in love with the century-old advocacy group. And for the last 11 years, he has worked at multiple branches across the South, as well as other social justice groups before coming to Charleston. Knaack said he disliked the increasingly common idea of stripping away rights to increase public safety. The ACLU agreed. “By enhancing our liberties, we actually enhance our security,” he said. “The ACLU stood by that principle back then, and history has obviously proved them right.” We caught up with Knaack over Zoom — he is in Vermont with family during the transition — to talk about some of his work down South.
CP: Is there anything else you think that still needs to be done or something you would like to have seen change while you were here? FK: There’s still a lot that needs to be done. We’ve seen the beginning of progress, but none of this is going to be a quick and easy fix. We have entrenched institutions that are opposed to these changes — police institutions, business institutions, etc. — that have been able to profit off these systems. But the infrastructure is there for the change to happen now.
City Paper: What changes have you seen in the state and in Charleston during your time at the ACLU? Frank Knaack: The thing I’m most excited and optimistic about is there’s been a real shift in the narrative around public safety, both in Charleston and, I think, statewide. People are starting to recognize that policing is not necessarily the tool that is best to keep us and our community safe.
CP: What do you think the next immediate steps are to make these changes happen? FK: It’s continuing to build public education around what policing is actually doing. In Charleston, for example, what CPD (Charleston Police Department) is actually doing, how they actually police. They’ve been really good at perpetuating this myth that they’re out there arresting
The sun rose over Charleston Oct. 6 for the first time in a decade as America’s second-best small city, according to Conde Nast Traveler readers. That’s right. Charleston is no longer the darling of Traveler readers, falling from the No. 1 spot it held for 10 years, according to The Post and Courier. Plagued by rising sea levels and a high cost of living, Charleston was replaced by Aspen, Colorado, in the magazine’s latest Reader’s Choice Awards, released Oct. 5. Looking to get out of America’s second-best city? Lucky for you, Traveler readers also voted Greenville and Savannah in the top 10. —Sam Spence

We need to look at root issues and invest in housing, invest in transportation, ensure we have living wages and ensure we have quality public education and health care — things the pandemic magnified. These coalitions have really come together, (bringing) together people who were traditionally in different spaces — environmental justice advocates, housing advocates, transportation advocates, racial justice advocates — all focused on this reimagining of public safety and ensuring [Charleston’s] budget actually reflects the needs of the community.
the bad people and keeping the good people safe, but we’ve been able to prove, with their own datasets, that what they’re spending the majority of their time on is arresting predominantly Black and brown people for low-level things like marijuana possession, open container and loitering. They’re spending a small fraction of their time actually dealing with serious criminal matters, and I think it’s going to be continuing to educate people on these basic facts. CP: We’ve been talking about highlevel police and criminal justice reform for over a year now. Are there any other areas where Charleston is in need of larger change? FK: Absolutely. I think our voting system, in the continued efforts by state and local officials to restrict the fundamental right to vote, is something that remains under attack. We’ve seen some small victories in those areas. We also have redistricting on a similar front. Efforts by lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are really not about ensuring that their voters pick them but ensuring they get to pick their voters. There’s also LGBTQ rights — we saw attack after attack after attack on trans youth last legislative session, unfortunately. It was a total of five attempts to attack trans youth through various mechanisms. Abortion is front and center under attack as well, with the first legislative act they passed last session. A lot of these issues, along with the pan CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

A police report mentioned a downtown woman who “religiously” locks her vehicles. We know that probably just means she’s consistent, but we couldn’t help but imagine her burning incense and waving a crucifix over her car door locks before paying the meter. RUNNERS UP A downtown woman suspected of stealing from another person’s car was caught by police with a number of stolen goods and a small baggie of weed, which she said she had also stolen from the same car. Guess the owner conveniently left that off the list. Police received a call from a distraught man who told them he had “a bad bump.” For those who aren’t as drugsavvy (read: cool) as others, he was probably talking about cocaine, but yes, it very well could have been about a bad pothole.

Mattresses bad for landfills, good for recycling biz The Charleston Mattress, a local mattress manufacturer and seller, owner K.C. Rennie started BedShred in July 2015 after seeing what a major impact discarded mattresses had on landfills. Since then, the online service has helped to keep more than 125,000 mattresses out of landfills through aggressive recycling and disposal procedures in collaboration with Nine Lives Recycling in Pamplico, S.C., where the materials are stored and processed. “We started BedShred mainly as a way to dispose of old mattresses whenever we delivered new ones through The Charleston Mattress, just because we didn’t want to keep taking them to the landfill,” Rennie said. “They’re torn down, destroyed and never used in new mattresses — the foam becomes carpet padding and the metal goes to the scrapyard and the wood disappears real quick.” The wood from boxsprings is given away — often making its way into various reclamation projects, according to BedShred’s website. The pandemic has been a boon for some home-furnishing companies, including direct-to-consumer online mattress vendors. Sales in 2020 were up 30% year-over-year, according to one expert who spoke with USA Today. One thing you don’t get with an online mattress order? The haulaway service of your old mattress you might get if you order from a brick-and-mortar store, leaving you with an old mattress that heads straight to the landfill if you leave it for collection on the curb. That’s where BedShred comes in. Rennie said many of his customers are actively looking for a better way to get rid of their old mattress. “I would say 40% of BedShred is people wanting to dispose of their mattress the right way, who don’t want to see the metal go to waste and be buried,” he said. The numbers are good news for landfills, which face big challenges from improper mattress disposal. They take up more than their fair share of space because they’re difficult to compact, clog machinery and create large soft spaces that can turn into sinkholes after filling, according to the Green Business Bureau. —Skyler Baldwin

Higher percentage of SC children get COVID-19, data show More South Carolina children have or have had COVID-19 than just about anywhere else in the nation, according to two reports. An Oct. 4 Washington Post analysis showed South Carolina as having the highest state childhood infection rate, based on Sept. 11 data from the Centers for Disease Control. A chilling chart that compares the infection rate per 100,000 children with vaccination rate shows the Palmetto State as a huge outlier. (See chart.) Meanwhile, a Sept. 30 report of state health data showed South Carolina had the second highest total rate of COVID-19 cases among children — 14,996.2 per 100,000 children — of any state other than Tennessee. (See Appendix 3B of the report by the American Association of Pediatrics and Children’s Hospital Association.) While interpreting data sometimes can be messy, health experts say the bottom line is clear: More kids are getting COVID-19 in South Carolina than other places. “We do know that South Carolina has seen an increase in pediatric COVID cases and hospitalizations, and that is obviously concerning,” said Derrek Asberry, a spokesman with the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). “We strongly encourage everyone ages 12 and up to get vaccinated as soon as possible if you have not already done so.”
What’s behind it all?
Doctors say South Carolina’s numbers are high and the disease is rampant because of a multitude of factors. But if more isn’t done, it’s not going to get better soon. Dr. Allison Eckard, head of the Medical University of South Carolina’s Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, points to three things that make South Carolina a blooming petri dish for the virus — low vaccination rates, complacency and masking policies. “It has been this trifecta of a low [statewide] vaccination rate as well as people are ‘over’ the idea that COVID is a big deal and, ‘Why should I avoid parties and sleepovers and wear a mask?’ When you combine that with the delta variant, it has spread like wildfire here.” Eckard added that confusion and controversy about school masking policies haven’t helped in curbing the illness among youths, who returned to school in August as the delta variant surged. “There is a large group of anti-mask parents in South Carolina who are very aggressive and have frightened many people into submission,” she said. Last week, a federal appellate judge denied state Attorney General Alan Wilson’s request that South Carolina’s law prohibiting school mask mandates be allowed to take effect.
Get the shot
Almost 53% of eligible South Carolinians are fully vaccinated, according to DHEC. But children between 12 and 17, who couldn’t get vaccinated until early summer, have lower rates. Last week, Eckard emphasized the safety of the vaccine. “Vaccination is the greatest tool in our arsenal,” she said. “I believe in science. I believe in protecting other people. I believe in the vaccine.” —Andy Brack
community members at the benefit of others. CP: If you could leave a message for your colleagues with the ACLU in South Carolina, those who will pick up where you left off, what would it be? FK: There’s absolutely amazing work going on in South Carolina right now. The
organizing work among our partners — the collaborative nature of the advocacy community here is absolutely amazing. But this is just going to be long-term building of infrastructure. Nothing is going to happen overnight. So dig in, and be ready for the long haul. Because that’s what it’s going to be.

Cruise ships returning, not that we have a choice I
Views 10.13.2021
t will have been almost two years since a Carnival cruise liner has welcomed passengers aboard when the Sunshine pleasure ship sails back to Charleston. The company last week announced the Carnival Sunshine would restart service in January in Charleston and by February at several other U.S. ports. Carnival cruises may offer tourists a cheap vacation, but the deal is not nearly as good for Charleston. Coming out of the pandemic, the Holy City’s stance on the bargain-basement cruises needs another look. After being rocked by the pandemic, the cruise industry — like many of us — is eager for a return to normal. But business as usual for cruise lines has almost always meant an adversarial, unhappy relationship with local residents, who too often are dwarfed by the companies’ smoke-belching mega ships that float into the Port of Charleston. Carnival capped off the most recent chapter in its tepid relationship with Charlestonians in March 2020, when the Sunshine crew dumped a ship full of customers into downtown Charleston without simple temperature checks to screen for COVID-19, despite assurances that safety protocols were in place. At the time, after reportedly being told by state port officials that testing was in place, S.C. Sen. Sandy Senn, R-Charleston, rightly said the move was “irresponsible and deserves examining further.” A Carnival spokesman told WCIV-TV no passengers exhibited symptoms, so no testing was needed. We’re still stunned by that kind of irresponsible reaction. When it comes to operating cruises in Charleston, the bare minimum is what most locals have come to expect. Meanwhile, state and local officials claim to be over a barrel with few options but to appease operators like Carnival — a company known to exploit overseas tax and labor laws to maximize profits.
8
But for what? State Ports Authority (SPA) reports show cruises generate only meager earnings and pump a small percentage of tourists through Charleston — some only long enough to drive in, park their cars and drive home. Cruises brought in $10.4 million for the SPA in 2019, about 3.5% of its total revenue. The 218,081 passengers who boarded at Union Pier accounted for about 2.95% of local tourism in 2019, according to Charleston County Economic Development. The wear and tear on traffic and crowding costs more than that to locals who endure. Charleston city leaders have tried to take a harder line on cruises over the years, but only litigation has managed to slow cruise ships’ advance on the peninsula. At sea, cruise ships operated by Carnival and others burn a highly polluting version of industrial diesel fuel, bellowing exhaust while vacationers sip pina coladas below. While docked in downtown Charleston, the ships are required to switch to a cleaner-burning fuel, but still idle one engine for the duration of the stay. Nationwide, major cruise ports are pressuring ocean liners by outfitting docks with shore power — the ability for the ships to plug in rather than run an engine. Yes, South Carolina still relies on fossil fuels for much of its power generation, so it’s not a perfect solution. But a 2013 report by the Southern Environmental Law Center showed shore power at the Port of Charleston would reduce harmful carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and particulate matter pollution. Let’s be clear: Charleston does not need cruise ships. But from Miami to San Diego to Seattle, shore power is expanding. If we’re going to allow ships to sidle up to downtown (we vote no), it’s time for South Carolina state agencies to work with Charleston and step up to the plate to get serious about reducing environmental impacts of these dirty eyesores.

OPINION
Getting the vaccine is your social responsibility By Andy Brack Charter schools, by their very nature, have governing boards made up of parents. They’re publicly funded, which requires them to follow general state education rules and keeps teachers in the state system, but the schools also are independent operationally from county school boards. South Carolina has about 75, which is about 1% of the nation’s charter schools. When an election for four board seats at one charter school came along, we read questionnaires filed by 10 candidates. They were somewhat interesting, but overall, they seemed pretty vanilla — somewhat informative but bland as reflections of the values of the candidates. The only thing that really was different is one guy filled out answers in all capital letters, which made his answers tough to read. So because the forms included each candidate’s email address, we decided to send a simple question to get a little more perspective: Q: Are you vaccinated? Yes or no. If you don’t answer the question, I won’t consider voting for you.
Six of the candidates freely responded they had been vaccinated. One said it was the easiest question he had received in the relatively quiet world of charter school elections.
Him: That is a personal medical question and has absolutely nothing to do with my candidacy. If you are so shallow and partisan as to think answering that question can in any way determine my ability to sit on the board, you my friend, are not the kind of person I am seeking for support. Me: I obviously disagree. If you do not have a vaccine, you are ignoring science and are not, in my view, qualified to serve on the governing board of a school that needs to encourage students to get vaccinated. Being vaccinated is an investment in the future of our community. Being unvaccinated is an act of selfishness. Him: Wow, Andy you are so woke! Thank you for your brilliant observations. Me: (Quoting from his questionnaire): “I can bring fresh ideas. My strength is that my decisions are based in reality.” Reality: 700,000+ COVID cases in SC. 11,000+ deaths. The virus is still swirling and dangerous in South Carolina, a state with one of the lowest vaccination rates and a don’t-tell-meto-wear-a-mask syndrome that offers a fertile environment in S.C. for the deadly delta variant of the virus to keep infecting people. We get it, South Carolina: You don’t like being told what to do. It’s been that way since before Christopher Gadsden developed the “Don’t Tread on Me” flag during the Revolutionary War. But as a citizen, you have a responsibility beyond yourself to pull together to make your community safe and stronger. Right now, 53% of South Carolinians age 12 and over (2.3 million people) have been fully vaccinated and another 8% have had one shot, according to state health officials. Imagine how much safer the Palmetto State would be if 80% were vaccinated. Listen to your doctor. Get the shot. It’s safe. It’s effective. It’s easy.

Whew, you’d think I was a communist or something. Six of the candidates freely responded they had been vaccinated. One said it was the easiest question he had received in the relatively quiet world of charter school elections. Another said she’d been vaccinated, but was against vaccine mandates for students, which didn’t make much sense. And another wanted to know why I wanted to know — for personal voting reasons (yes) or to publish people’s answers (no). Another candidate wanted to know why I wanted to know, but never answered further. Two people didn’t answer. And then there was this guy — the crank — who attacked:

Tired of fighting squirrels? Feed them. From Staff Reports
More interesting than you may have thought
Some see squirrels as yard rats. But many find squirrels to be interesting creatures that are worth watching. Consider these facts: • Squirrels can find food buried beneath 1 foot of snow. • Squirrels’ front teeth never stop growing. • Squirrels run zigzag patterns to escape predators. • Squirrels “fake out” other squirrels and pretend to bury nuts to throw off potential thieves from their hiding places.

Plus, they can jump up to 20 feet and run 20 miles per hour. • Squirrels can see behind them, but they’re blind at birth. • When given a mixture of nuts, squirrels sort them by type before burying each variety in a different area. • Squirrels can rotate their hind feet 180 degrees when descending trees and poles. • Squirrels are one of the most important animals for helping spread oak trees. They store acorns in the ground but only recover about 70% of them, allowing forgotten acorns to grow into healthy trees.

For the birds
In cold weather, it’s important to provide high-quality choices for birds that offer the most fat, nutrients and energy. Look for black oil sunflower, which is rich in oil, attracting birds and providing energy. Birds also love suet, the solid fat rendered from beef, venison or vegetables, which provides concentrated energy, helping them make it through freezing weather. Some suet cakes are formulated to attract the largest variety and number of birds as well as specific bird species. Birds are greatly attracted to the taste of hot and spicy suet cakes, and some even prefer them over non-spicy suet cakes. By following squirrel-proofing tips and offering food birds and squirrels prefer in separate locations, you’ll see for yourself birds and squirrels can live harmoniously in your backyard while you enjoy watching both species’ entertaining antics. Fall and winter are times for maddening backyard battles between homeowners and squirrels fighting over bird feed. But experts say there’s a way to keep squirrels out of feeders and thwart their thievery — by feeding them. In turn, your backyard may have more harmony for birds and squirrels. One common tactic is stocking feeders with seed squirrels dislike, such as safflower, nyjer, white proso millet and seed infused with capsaicin, a compound derived from hot peppers that makes mammals’ tongues smart. One option, for example, features nutritious sunflower meats infused with fiery habanero chili peppers. They’re a no-waste, no-mess feed, birds enjoy but squirrels dislike. Some people find squirrels adorable, fascinating to watch and have nothing against them, even allowing them to share seed with birds. The real problem begins when squirrels take their share — and then some. To combat this, consider adding a baffle to your bird feeder on a pole about 5 feet high so squirrels don’t jump over it. Bird feeders on poles can be set in open spaces where there’s no trees or structures that squirrels can jump from onto feeders. Try a “squirrel-proof” feeder that employs cages, or spring-loaded doors, keeping squirrels at bay. You can then offer food specific to squirrels’ taste preferences away from bird feeders. Because squirrels are territorial, they’re less likely to go to other locations once they’re accustomed to eating in a designated place. Establishing a feeding space just for squirrels can satisfy their appetites and keep them out of bird feeders. You can use an open feeder or scatter feed on the ground for easy access. Try 100% whole peanuts or mixes that include ingredients squirrels love. Another way to help squirrels thrive is to provide access to fresh, clean water.

AT HOME IN THE LOWCOUNTRY
The recipe that was so good it’s not in the book By Andy Brack
Squash casserole. It’s the recipe Bobby Shealy says is his favorite, but something happened on the way to publication of his first cookbook — he accidentally forgot to include it. Three years ago when the local Realtor was looking for a publisher to share recipes mastered for family and friends over 40 years, he told the folks at Mascot Books that his cooking was not “health food.” “My opening line to them was that if there is going to be a problem with bacon or cream cheese or butter or sour cream, then this isn’t probably the book for you,” recalled Shealy, who lives in a contemporary cottage in Riverland Terrace. “They said, ‘No, Southern food is coming back.’ ” They struck a deal and he got to work. At the end of the month, area bookstores will have copies of A Taste of Living in Charleston: Lowcountry Dishes Anyone Can Cook. It’s also available online for $29. It includes about 80 non-squash casserole recipes ranging from breads, desserts and drinks to Lowcountry standards, including almost as many ways to cook shrimp as Bubba from Forrest Gump could recite. When asked which was his favorite, Shealy demurred (it’s a question most cookbook authors seem to hate). But when asked which was his favorite in terms of butter, cream, bacon or sour cream, he immediately said, “My squash casserole.” Then he paused. “Damn. I think I forgot to put it in there.” Moments later, he was still beating himself up over it: “I can’t believe I don’t have the squash in there.” (Fortunately for City Paper readers, he provided the recipe; see the end of the story.)

Shealy says his family in Charleston goes back to Captain Robert Seabrook, who sailed into the Holy City in 1680. Through the years, they’ve lived off the land and sea and enjoyed its bounty. Shealy added that he comes from a long line of good cooks who filled their homes with great smells and delicious food. During college at the University of South Carolina, he worked part-time as a page at the Statehouse, only to take a job with the state Employment Security Commission after graduation. He retired in his mid-40s to launch a 20-year career as a top real estate agent in which he sells millions of dollars of homes year after year. “I’m a people person,” Shealy said during an interview in his spacious grand room filled with knick-knacks collected in travels around the world. “I enjoy that part of the job. I’m very competitive.

‘If I can cook it, so can you’
Friends suggested that Shealy write down his recipes in a book because they enjoyed his practical, tasty food. “People love delicious Southern food,” he wrote in the book introduction, “and they are totally capable of making it, but they claim they just don’t have time to cook. This book provides many shortcuts to fabulous

Now, Shealy is ready to share the book with people across the area. “I hope these recipes bring as much happiness to my readers’ tables as they have mine,”

Bobby’s Squash Casserole
1. Stew squash. Dice your onions and cook for 3 to 5 minutes in olive oil in a large skillet. Then add your squash, sliced thinly and in small pieces. Saute in the oil with the onions for a few minutes. Do not let it burn. Then add one to two cups of chicken broth and put on low heat and cook down with the lid on for 10 to 20 minutes. Might take a little more depending on your stove. Use potato masher and mash the squash as it cooks. Check every few minutes and stir well.

Prep time: 20-30 minutes; Cook time: 30-40 minutes. Serves six to eight. • 2 pounds yellow crook-necked squash, stewed (see below) • 4 oz. stick of butter, melted • 2 medium Vidalia onions • 14 oz. can sliced carrots • 8 oz. sour cream • 10.5 oz. can cream of chicken soup • Two 8 oz. cans diced water chestnuts, drained • 1-2 cups cheddar cheese, grated • 1-2 cups chicken broth • 1 pack Ritz crackers, crushed • 1 cup bacon crumbles • Several packs of stevia • Morton Nature’s Seasons to taste • Salt and pepper to taste
Five things you MUST always have in your refrigerator: Butter, Coffeemate, pickled okra, chicken broth, Duke’s mayonnaise.
Describe your best day in 50 words or less: Get coffee, sit in my garden, cuddling with my cat, going over my gratitude list, calling my dad, some real estate. Childhood hero: Superman. Your hero now: My dad.
2. Add the bacon crumbles. Then add salt, pepper and Nature’s Seasons to taste. 3. Add two to three packs of stevia and see if you like that flavor. I prefer sweeter with some pepper and add accordingly until I get the flavor I want. 4. Take the top off the skillet to help any excess liquid cook out. Once cooked (taste it), drain into a colander. 5. Once drained, pour the squash mixture into a greased 9-by-11 casserole dish and add all of the other ingredients, except the crackers and butter. 6. Sprinkle the mixture with the crushed crackers and drizzle the melted butter on top. 7. Bake until bubbly at 350 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes.

I strive to be No. 1. I’ve developed a lot of very good friendships with clients.” Before the pandemic, Shealy entertained frequently in his home, opening it up to friends to share cocktails and meals. About five years ago, he built his current house on James Island, just down the street from an earlier home. He lives with his frisky cat Bailey in the 2,500-square-foot home that could easily appear in Coastal Living magazine. It has three bedrooms and two baths, plus a big pantry and a large and eclectic entertaining space highlighted by a grand kitchen island, two stoves and two dishwashers — all the better to cook for people. Outside is a small pool flanked by a shower, bar and space for smoker. A comfortable sitting garden set off by a privacy fence fronts the property. Shealy’s cookbook was supposed to come out last year, but the pandemic got in the way, just as it interrupted plans for most people. For a guy who loves to entertain and wrap people around good food and drink, the pandemic was especially hard for Shealy, who couldn’t entertain for months. He says it affected every aspect of his life. “Prior, I attended church, went out to dinner to try new places, went to the gym. All of that stopped.”

DIGGING LOCAL Crafting your very own harvest wreath can be a relaxing fall project
A step-by-step fall harvest wreath project By Toni Reale, special to Digs Wreath-making has a long history, with evidence woven through handed-down tales from ancient Greece, Persia and Rome. It is thought this craft began as a way to adorn the heads of royalty and to honor winning gladiators with a crown made of local foliage, such as olive leaf and herbs. Some believe the door wreath was invented after those who wanted to preserve or save their head crowns would hang them on a wall or door. Later evidence shows door wreaths designed with the bounty of a harvest were kept up year-round to appease the gods in hopes of a better harvest the following year. The wreath, a circular, unending shape, symbolized everlasting devotion to the gods and was thought to bring good luck and mercy to any household that displayed one on its door. As Christianity took over pagan traditions, wreaths were used Reale to mark various religious holidays. Regardless of its history, putting time and creative energy into making your own harvest wreath for your front door can be a relaxing — and even introspective — activity.
You’ll need
• Clippers or gardening shears • A flat paddle of wire • Tacky glue • A grapevine wreath (from a craft store) • Dried elements (foraged or purchased) • Ribbon
Step 1: Gather materials
Take a walk and gather dried flowers, pods, berries, palms or other materials that seem wilt proof. You can also purchase some dried floral embellishments for things that can’t be found foraging.
Digs 10.13.2021
Step 2: Begin With bundles
18
Make small but hefty bundles of your gathered materials in your hand (typically four to five stems) and hold them to the wreath form. Take your wire paddle and wind it around your bundle three times, pulling with medium strength around each time. Don’t pull too tight or you’ll break the stems or your wire. Do NOT cut your wire after this step.
Step 3: Keep bundling
Create another bundle with materials of your choice and hold it up to your wreath form approximately 3 inches below where the wire cinched your previous bundle. When held up to the wreath, your new bundle should cover the wire wrapping of the last bundle by a good bit. Wind the wire around this next bundle three times and
Photos by Toni Reale/Roadside Blooms
The tools and materials you’ll need for your wreath can be found at most craft stores set your wire paddle down remembering not to cut the wire. Having continuous wire throughout your wreath helps with the structural integrity of it.
Step 4: Be intentional
Repeat Step 3 for as many times as you wish. Some may decide to go all the way around or do a half-moon shape, leaving a portion of the grapevine wreath exposed. As you make your bundles and create your harvest wreath, think about your successes this year, the things you’ve overcome and your wishes for the future. Bind your hopes and intentions into each bundle.
Step 5: Ending the wreath
When you are ready to end your wreath, take your last
Don’t wrap the wire too tight — it may cut into and break the stems bundle and orient it in the opposite direction so that the ends of your last bundles overlap. You will have a void to fill and can either stick or glue loose pieces or other dried elements to cover up where you ended.
Step 6: Hang and reflect
Hang with ribbon from your door. Everytime you look at your wreath, you can reflect on those successes and intentions built into every bundle. Toni Reale is the owner of Roadside Blooms, a unique flower and plant shop in Park Circle in North Charleston. It specializes in weddings, events and everyday deliveries using nearly 100% American- and locally grown blooms. Online at roadsideblooms.com. 4610 Spruill Ave., Suite 102, North Charleston.

Michael Smallwood talks night shoots, screaming on camera and the thrill of Halloween Kills
M
By Sam Spence
Arts 10.13.2021 20
City Paper: You’ve acted on stage and on screen. Which is your favorite? Michael Smallwood: I think I prefer stage. There’s something about the energy of that live crowd — the reaction you get from an audience who is actively watching right there. With a film, as an actor, you do it, and then you walk away from it, and it’s months before you actually see the work.
CP: What led you to get involved in Halloween (2018)? MS: I auditioned a couple of times for Rough House Pictures stuff. I auditioned for Vice Principals and a couple other things. They basically had open, sort of, auditions to fill out the town, basically various characters living in Haddonfield. They called me in, I did a read and was like, “OK, great. That was cool.” And then maybe a week later, my agent called and was like, “Hey, do you want to be in Halloween? Because they have a part they’d like you to play.” And I was like, “Absolutely. Of course I do.” CP: Is that a situation where you want to know what the pay is first? Or the time commitment? MS: With indie projects, I’m always asking, “What’s the money and what’s the time commitment?” Because you can end up in situations, and I’ve been in them before, where you’re working way too much for way too little compensation. But with studio projects, I never really have that question, because at the end of the day, worst case scenario is that they’re going to pay me SAG (Screen Actors Guild) scale. And SAG scale is very good. And frequently, you’ll know when you get the casting notice, the rate is there for you to see. I leapt at the opportunity to do Halloween. My wife’s a huge fan of that franchise, and I knew this would be a huge movie. So absolutely, I want to do this part. I didn’t know, after we filmed that movie, that when putting together the second one, they’d want to bring my character back. CP: When did you figure that out? MS: They called me in summer 2019. Then at the end of July, I got a call that was like, “Yep, it’s definitely happening. They
Michael Smallwood (far right) credited as ‘Hunky Doctor’ in 2018’s Halloween, said this installment sees his character finally named
need you fly out to L.A. for some specialeffects tests.” They sent me the script, and I read it and realized, “Oh, OK. I’m in a lot of this movie. Great. Cool.” CP: Does your character have a name? MS: In the last movie, he was credited as “Hunky Doctor.” And in this one, he gets an actual name. CP: Ah, right: Michael Smallwood, Hunky Doctor. MS: Yeah, yeah, yeah. That’s right. CP: You said your wife is a fan of Halloween. Were you a horror fan or Halloween fan before this? MS: Horror’s never been one of my favorite genres, but there have been standout ones that I’ve always liked. I’m a big fan of the Scream movies, those are my favorite horror movies.
Photos by Ryan Green/Universal Pictures
ichael Smallwood saw his latest gig to hit the big screen, Halloween Kills, for the first time Tuesday at Hollywood’s historic Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. For the busy Charleston actor and playwright who also serves as City Paper’s contributing arts editor, it’s a first in a career that’s wound from community theater to indie film to big-budget on-screen productions. Returning for the second installment of the latest films in the Halloween franchise, Smallwood’s character was conceptualized by the Charleston-based Rough House Pictures team that includes director/writer/proSmallwood ducer David Gordon Green and writer/producer Danny McBride. Rough House’s portfolio includes everything from HBO-quality slapstick in The Righteous Gemstones to the renewed Halloween, produced alongside the horror wizards at Blumhouse Productions, which brought the world Get Out, Paranormal Activity and more. Ahead of the premiere, we sat down with Smallwood to talk about the experience of helping create 2018’s Halloween, filmed in Charleston, and 2021’s Halloween Kills, filmed mostly in Wilmington.
And then, once audiences see it, you really only know what people’s reactions are if they tell you.
CP: With horror there are so many short cuts and quick shots, I assume that means a lot of repetitive takes? MS: That’s just the film process. Especially with horror, there are some things you can only do once because, once we do it, you know, that costume is going to be ruined. Some stuff we did a ton of times. They’ll be like, “Just give me a bunch of screams over and over again.” Every little bit, we’ve probably done that dialogue 10, 12, 15 times. CP: Is it fun while you’re doing it? Even though it’s difficult and tedious? MS: Oh, yea. We all say the worst day that you spend on a film set is the best day of work. Because at the end of the day, we’re getting to tell stories. CP: From the trailers, it looks like you might spend some quality time in this car ... MS: We spent a week in that car. There were two of them — here’s a little movie magic: One of them was just a regular car that they could film interiors of. And then one of them was specifically rigged for certain things — we actually didn’t even use them. There were supposed to be some gunshots that went off inside the car, so one of the cars was rigged with gunshots inside. We spent a whole week of night shoots in and around that car. CP: Did you get to keep anything from the production? MS: The one thing I did keep is one of my stethoscopes. One of my lines from (Halloween) 2018 was about the stethoscope, and we brought it back for this movie. I got to use it in a really cool way in the movie. And I was like, “I’m keeping this.” CP: So, do you think your character will be returning for the third movie, Halloween Ends? MS: It’s not looking good! I’m not going to say no, because anybody can return for any number of reasons. I have no idea. But, no spoilers, I don’t think so. Halloween Kills hits theaters Oct. 15. Terrace Theater will host a special screening at 7:30 p.m. Friday, featuring an intro and Q+A with director David Gordon Green.
Getting woke for Halloween: The politics of John Carpenter By Scott Poole LIVE LOCAL Black Lives Matter as part of the new Halloween series? Jamie Lee Curtis, the archetype of the heroic final girl from the original Halloween, said in a 2020 interview that the themes of the Black Lives Matter movement will appear in Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, the final installments in the resurrected franchise. The films will explore, she said, “What happens when trauma infects an entire community.” You can almost feel the wrath of culture watchdogs ready to take to YouTube or Fox News to complain about woke-itude. Since Jordan Peele’s 2015 Get Out, a subset of not-very-serious horror fans have whined about “woke” horror. Rather than enjoying the very real renaissance of horror over the last decade, these fans have managed to whipsaw themselves into tiny tangles of rage and grievance. Some of the rants came from entirely predictable sources. Alt-right outlet Breitbart has made yelping about “woke horror” one of its many side-hustles. It’s an attitude that frequently appears on Twitter — ranging in quality from clever to the digital equivalent of bathroom scribblings. Halloween director John Carpenter has been making films for half a century. The 73-year-old isn’t directly involved with the latest flick, but if it’s attuned to the times, Curtis’ comments suggest his ghostly fingerprints are all over it. Carpenter has been trying to shake us awake since the 1970s, when counterculture indies fought studio juggernauts like Jaws, Star Wars, Superman and Rocky. Over the next decades, Carpenter crashed the guardrails of genre, producing a body of work likely to irritate the querulous alt-right aunties who seem to spend their days worried that Americans might not sleepwalk through history. Carpenter’s 1982 The Thing remade a Cold War classic — 1951’s Thing from Another World — into a parable about Reagan-era cultural paranoia. His adaptation of Stephen King’s Christine took aim at the poisons of American nostalgia — the ’50s high school romance celebrated in American Graffiti and Happy Days — and dragged it into nightmare country. But when it comes to political horror liable to wake the sleeper, look no farther than 1989’s They Live, where homeless construction worker John Nada, played by Rowdy Roddy Piper (!!), learns aliens have taken over. Acquiring lenses that allow him to see the truth behind the lies, he discovers a world where magazine covers featuring

John Carpenter’s 1989 film They Live is a message about unrestrained capitalism boats and beautiful homes really say “OBEY” and “CONSUME.” A billboard of a beautiful woman actually says, “MARRY AND REPRODUCE.” Long before Doa Beezy and Donald Glover, Carpenter warned us to stay woke. In fact, Carpenter had a wonderful “I’mtoo-old-for-this” moment in 2017, after learning some in the alt-right saw They Live as a film secretly about a Jewish conspiracy. Nope. Nope. Nope. He wasn’t having it. “They Live is about yuppies and unrestrained capitalism,” he angrily wrote on Twitter. “It has nothing to do with Jewish control of the world, which is a slander and a lie.” It may well be that, as Marxist philosopher Slavoj Zizek has said, They Live is “a classic of the Hollywood left.” But we can see Carpenter’s concerns if we go back to that primal slasher film that brought him fame. Carpenter once told an interviewer there are two kinds of horror stories. The most popular presents a wise person speaking about hidden dangers — things with teeth lurking “out there.” The second kind, Carpenter said, might be less popular even if it’s more frightening: the monster sitting among us. Halloween captures this idea perfectly. It may seem to bring us the monster out of the darkness in the form of Michael Myers, better known to fans by his script designation as The Shape. But it’s the night he came home, those quiet suburban streets of Haddonfield not nearly as safe as ’70s white flight had claimed they would be. He was a loyal son of his little hometown, the product of a thousand poisons that fester in the those nasty open wounds that are America’s sad dream of small towns and innocence lost. Afraid of woke horror? Hide under the covers, snowflake. Carpenter is coming for you. To paraphrase Roddy Piper’s infamous ad lib in They Live, he’s here to kick ass and chew bubblegum. But he’s all out of bubblegum.

CP: How was it different, day to day, than other projects you’ve been on? MS: It was a much longer process of having to be on set. A big difference in this project versus some of the others is that it was all night shoots. Every day, a night shoot. Once you start turning your entire schedule upside down, it takes a while to get used to. You’re basically on set all night, then you’re trying to sleep during the day. The rest of it was all just the work. You know, you’re on set, getting to do ... some really cool stuff — I’m trying not to give away too many spoilers.

GrowFood Carolina looks to the future after 10 years

The Coastal Conservation League started local food hub GrowFood Carolina in 2011 with the goal of championing small-scale agriculture by providing local, often rural, farmers the sales, marketing and logistics guidance they need to get their products to market. The hub has since grown from five to more than 120 farmers — and it hopes to offer even more support once it moves out of its Morrison Drive warehouse, general manager Anthony Mirisciotta told the City Paper. “GrowFood is really well-positioned for the future, and so much of that is really thanks to our communities,” he said. Talk to the majority of Charleston chefs, and they’ll probably mention the GrowFood produce-of-the-moment they’re excited to feature on the menu. It’s a name that’s synonymous with Charleston cuisine and is responsible for helping small fish like Black Pearl Farms, Lowland Farms and Shuler Farm, get into 167 Raw, Estadio, The Ordinary and many more local restaurants and big box grocery stores. “We kind of opened up the doors not really knowing what was coming, and really, all of us have grown together,” Mirisciotta said. “Ten years ago, the local food landscape was a lot different, and now, we have expanded from one cold room that was empty most of the year until, now, we have three different cold rooms that are bursting with different flavors and varieties year after year.” GrowFood doesn’t just bring farmers’ products to market; it also helps give

be one of those rare times when you’ll be wise to consider an alternative approach: that the most vigorous truths and liveliest energies may lie beyond where you usually go. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Author William S. Burroughs claimed his greatest strength was a “capacity to confront myself no matter how unpleasant.” But he added a caveat to his brag: Although he recognized his mistakes, he rarely made any corrections. Yikes! Dear Scorpio, I invite you to do what Burroughs couldn’t. Question yourself about how you might have gone off course, but then actually make adjustments and atonements. As you do, keep in mind these principles: 1. An apparent mistake could lead you to a key insight or revelation. 2. An obstruction to the flow may prod you to open your mind and heart to a liberating possibility. 3. A snafu might motivate you to get back to where you belong. 4. A mess could show you something important you’ve been missing. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): In her novel We Have Always Lived in the Castle, Sagittarian author Shirley Jackson wrote, “Today my winged horse is coming, and I am carrying you off to the moon, and on the moon we will eat rose petals.” I wonder what you would do if you received a message like that—an invitation to wander out on fanciful or mysterious adventures. I hope you’d be receptive. I hope you wouldn’t say, “There are so such things as flying horses. It’s impossible to fly to the moon and eat rose petals.” Even if you don’t typically entertain such whimsical notions, the time is favorable to do so now. I bet you will be pleased with the unexpected grace they bring your way. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Capricorn author Susan Sontag wrote about people who weren’t receptive to her intensity and intelligence. She said she always had “a feeling of being ‘too much’ for them— a creature from another planet—and I would try to scale myself down to size, so I could be apprehendable and lovable by them.” I understand the inclination to engage in such self-diminishment. We all want to be appreciated and understood. But I urge you to refrain from taming and toning yourself down too much in the coming weeks. Don’t do what Sontag did. In my astrological opinion, it’s time for you to be an extra vivid version of yourself. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “I am diagnosed with not having enough insanely addictive drugs coursing through my body,” joked comedian Sarah Silverman. Judging from current cosmic rhythms, I’m inclined to draw a similar conclusion about you. It may be wise for you to dose yourself with intoxicants. JUST KIDDING! I lied. Here’s the truth: I would love for you to experience extra rapture, mystic illumination, transcendent sex, and yes, even intoxication in the coming weeks. My analysis of the astrological omens suggests these delights are more likely and desirable than usual. However, the best way to arouse them is by communing with your favorite non-drug and nonalcohol inebriants. The benefits will last longer and incur no psychological cost. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “The truth is,” writes cartoonist Bill Watterson, “Most of us discover where we are headed when we arrive.” I sense this will describe your life during the next six weeks. Your long, strange journey won’t come to an end, of course. But a key chapter in that long, strange journey will climax. You will be mostly finished with lessons you have been studying for many moons. The winding road you have been following will end up someplace in particular. And sometime soon, I suspect you’ll spy a foreshadowing flash of this denouement. Homework: What subject are you trying to avoid thinking about? https://Newsletter.FreeWillAstrology. com

ARIES (March 21-April 19): According to my understanding of the upcoming weeks, life will present you with unusual opportunities. I suspect you will find it reasonable and righteous to shed, dismantle, and rebel against the past. Redefining your history will be a fun and worthy project. Here are other related activities I recommend for you: 1. Forget and renounce a long-running fear that has never come true. 2. Throw away a reminder of an old experience that makes you feel bad. 3. Freshen your mood and attitude by moving around the furniture and decor in your home. 4. Write a note of atonement to a person you hurt once upon a time. 5. Give yourself a new nickname that inspires you to emancipate yourself from a pattern or habit you want to leave behind. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Taurus poet Donte Collins’ preferred pronouns are “they” and “them.” They describe themself as Black, queer and adopted. “A lover doesn’t discourage your growth,” they write. “A lover says, ‘I see who you are today, and I cannot wait to see who you become tomorrow.’” I hope you have people like that in your life, Taurus—lovers, friends, allies, and relatives. If there is a scarcity of such beloved companions in your life, the next eight weeks will be an excellent time to round up new ones. And if you are connected with people who delight in your progress and evolution, deepen your connection with them. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Gemini author Lisa Cron advises her fellow writers, “Avoid exclamation points! Really!! Because they’re distracting!! Almost as much as CAPITALIZING THINGS!!!” I’ll expand her counsel to apply not just to writers, but to all of you Geminis. In my astrological opinion, you’re likely to find success in the coming weeks if you’re understated, modest, and unmelodramatic. Make it your goal to create smooth, suave, savvy solutions. Be cagey and cool and crafty. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu told us that water is in one sense soft and passive, but is in another sense superb at eroding jams and obstacles that are hard and firm. There’s a magic in the way its apparent weakness overcomes what seems strong and unassailable. You are one of the zodiac’s top wielders of water’s superpower, Cancerian. And in the coming weeks, it will work for you with even more amazing grace than usual. Take full advantage of your sensitivity, your emotional intelligence, and your empathy. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Leo author James Baldwin told us, “You read something which you thought only happened to you, and you discover that it happened 100 years ago to [Russian novelist] Fyodor Dostoyevsky. This is a great liberation for the suffering, struggling person, who always thinks that he is alone.” In that spirit, Leo, and in accordance with astrological omens, I urge you to track down people who have had pivotal experiences similar to yours, either in the distant or recent past. These days, you need the consoling companionship they can provide. Their influence could be key to liberating you from at least some of your pain. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Poet Octavio Paz described two kinds of distraction. One is “the distraction of the person who is always outside himself, lost in the trivial, senseless, turmoil of everyday life.” The other is “the distraction of the person who withdraws from the world in order to shut himself up in the secret and ever-changing land of his fantasy.” In my astrological opinion, you Virgos should specialize in the latter during the coming weeks. It’s time to reinvigorate your relationship with your deep inner sources. Go in search of the reverent joy that comes from communing with your tantalizing mysteries. Explore the riddles at the core of your destiny. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “We must never be afraid to go too far, for truth lies beyond,” declared novelist Marcel Proust. I wouldn’t normally offer that counsel to you Libras. One of your strengths is your skill at maintaining healthy boundaries. You know how to set dynamic limits that are just right: neither too extreme nor too timid. But according to my analysis of the astrological potentials, the coming weeks will

The experimental rap heard on Lover’s Nightmare is the sound of local artist Semkari transitioning back to his roots. Always a fan of Drake’s slow songs, Semkari’s debut album is a return to melodic material, which he was making before he came on the scene with a string of singles. “For me, releasing something like this shows me that I’m still true to myself because I have what inspires me at heart,” Semkari said. Dosing the R&B melodies with playful cut-ups, downtempo indie hip-hop builds the listening experience of Lover’s Nightmare. “The first half is me enjoying my vices, the second half is reflecting on life and relationships.” One single, “Warzone,” is inspired by his time helping Marcus McDonald with Black Lives Matter, while the track “Falling Down” is an anthemic reveal: “I feel like my soul resonates with that song, and I put myself out there and had an open door with my emotions.” Multiple producers contributed to the album, including local rapper Dave Curry, aka Black Dave, who made the beat heard on “Gone.” With influences like Russ, 3OH!3,
Metallica and Soundcloud rapper Summr, Semkari wrote Lover’s Nightmare for whatever mood you’re feeling. “If you’re sad or you’re happy or you had a shitty day at work or if you’re leaving a party or going to a party,” he said. There have been moments where he wanted to stop making music altogether. “One of my friends, Wop, sadly he’s missing right now in Arizona. He left me an email one day at 3 o’clock in the morning like six months ago saying, ‘I don’t want you to give up on your music.’ I feel like if I stop now, I would probably let him down. It’s always taken a lot for me to keep going. Especially with him not being here with us.” The Lover’s Nightmare Oct. 15 release show at The Royal American, will feature Clayton James, Hirow, Tyrie and Dwrxght with filming by the Grilled Cheese Show and vending by Billy Thrift Shop and The Almighty Apparel. Rather than booking gigs regularly, Semkari is focused on building a presence on TikTok and Twitter and putting out collaborative singles and videos. His goal for his next music video is to have a plot behind it, which will be new territory. And while the next few singles will delve more into pop, the inspiration behind his next album idea is Edward Scissorhands, the loner at the top of the hill. “I identify with his character. Right now, it resonates with me heavily, espe-
cially the ending where he has to run away from everyone who loved him. He was trying to help other people but he ended up hurting them.” Being the only Black kid his age in the private school he attended, and being asked as a Charleston native why he didn’t sound Gullah, he’s dealt with being misunderstood over the years. “The best way I can say it is what Earl Sweatshirt said: ‘Too white for the Black kids, too Black for the white kids.’ ” To keep making art in these uncertain times, he believes it’s essential to remain vulnerable. “I like being genuine and open with myself and not censoring my art. I think people nowadays tend to censor themselves — the whole cancel culture thing. We live in an age of, ‘Everything is happy-go-lucky,’ when really, it’s not.” Although transparency still leaves room for interpretation. His music is him painting a different picture of himself, building confidence in himself — which he’s pretty sure his younger self would be happy about. “To my past self I would say, ‘Don’t wear your heart on your sleeve.’ I grew up the nice kid. I grew up in a Christian household and was taught to do the right thing regardless of my emotions, and that’s led me to get hurt. I would tell him to keep his heart guarded and do his best to stay loyal to himself.” And to his future self? “I hope he is the person that I have worked toward becoming every day. Just like anything in life, you don’t want to get too comfortable, to limit yourself and be too scared to take the next leap of faith with your art.”
In August Charleston singer-songwriter Heather Rice debuted the video for her new single “Matchbox Home,” a product of the pandemic summer and going a little stir crazy in the house with just herself and her toddler. For the video, she tucked herself away in an AirStream with a ’70s-inspired interior in Travelers Rest, South Carolina. Written 10 years ago, “Matchbox Home” is “about getting really small and quiet and listening and reading and studying,” Rice said. “Sometimes when you get small in your home and get right, you can know where you’re going.” —Chelsea Grinstead
Laura Jane Vincent’s space folk coming to Tin Roof Local singer-songwriter Laura Jane Vincent has made the switch from acoustic to electric guitar as her main thing with ukulele and piano in her repertoire as well. She’s currently on tour for her “electric space folk” album, All These Machines, and will be playing Tin Roof Oct. 14. Vincent will perform with harddriving folk groups Drunken Prayer and Farewell Friend, which is led by guitarist Tom Troyer who produced All These Machines and plays with Vincent’s ensemble. Also joining her will be her longtime bassist Danny Infinger and drummer Scott Dence. Tickets for the 9 p.m. show are $5 at the door. —CG
Easy Honey goes ‘Far Out’ with new single Easy Honey’s new single, “Far Out,” retains rock heavy guitar in its uptempo, layered indie-pop frame. Recorded at local stomping grounds studio The Space, frontmen Selby Austin and Darby McGlone, drummer Charlie Holt and guitarist Daniel Comen tracked the upcoming album Peach Fuzz with Wolfgang Zimmerman. “We definitely have been more in line with a psychedelic bone in our body that we try to channel on this one.” Catch Easy Honey Oct. 31 at The Royal American’s Boogieman Halloween Festival. —CG
