Changes to insurance marketplace make affordable care more accessible

Open enrollment for health insurance through the federal marketplace began Nov. 1, and a number of rule changes may help many who were previously ineligible for financial assistance get affordable health care through the American Rescue Plan.

“The Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the federal marketplace saved so many people from not having insurance when they were laid off from work during the pandemic,” said S.C. Small Business Chamber of Commerce Knapp president and CEO Frank Knapp. But some of the strict requirements of the plan kept some from getting on board.

Previously, those who earned the equivalent of at least 400% of the federal poverty line would automatically be ineligible for federal assistance. According to data from the national Kaiser Family Foundation nonprofit, that’s roughly 35.6% of South Carolina’s population, many of whom may

have lost access to employer-provided health care during the pandemic.

“It made it incredibly difficult for small business owners,” Knapp said. “They were having to pay full rates while premiums have been steadily going up for years.

They were turning to these short-term, low-benefit policies and then finding out, ‘Well crap’ … They couldn’t use it — their health care expenses weren’t covered.

This is an opportunity for those small business owners to revisit their health insurance and look at getting a policy through the marketplace.”

While ACA help has historically been aimed primarily toward low-wage workers, many of whom could get free plans in the past, premium assistance has been dramatically increased. That helps everybody, Knapp said.

Employers are paying premiums that are 27% lower, on average, than previous years, according to a press release from the S.C. Small Business Chamber of Commerce. And 35% of all workers with individual plans are now paying less than $10 per month. Low-wage workers with incomes between 100-150% of the poverty line are getting full-coverage plans with no premiums at all.

“

Part of the worldwide “Blue Line Project,” the visual markers join other installations that denote the impact of our changing climate.

At Circular Church, the line marks the height of storm surge equivalent to Hurricane Hugo if it were to visit Charleston in 2020, in 2050 and in 2100.

SCSU making progress on Charleston facility

A new regional education center is expected to open in early 2022 in Charleston’s East Side neighborhood, after a decade of planning and red tape, to help school children and adults live better and connect with the latest technology.

On a tiny parcel of donated government land at Lee and America streets, S.C. State University (SCSU) has built a $5.3 million coastal education and research center to serve Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester and Georgetown counties. The center is part of SCSU’s federally funded 1890 Extension and Research program.

“We want this to be a launching pad for our programs,” said Louis Whitesides, SCSU’s vice president and director of land grant programs. “We take the expertise in the university to the community.

This building is going to give us more roots in the Charleston area.”

For about three decades, SCSU has offered programs to students at the Sanders-Clyde Elementary and Burke High schools and Charleston Development Academy and other schools. With the new building, those programs will continue and others will be added to include short-term noncredit hour certificate programs. The center also has meeting space for the community and small businesses.

“With the facility, we can hire up to eight employees supervised by a regional director,” Whitesides said. “The staff will also include an economic development director to work with small businesses and nonprofits on business planning, business formation and technical assistance for increased profitability and job creation.”

The center is convenient for neighborhood resident JaQuan Horlbeck. He suspected the building had something to do with a college. Horlbeck, 22, said he wants to be an entrepreneur. When told the building will be a place for smallbusiness assistance, he asked: “Can I come anytime?”

The center was first discussed in 2011.

Construction began in September 2020.

It has taken longer than expected because of the coronavirus pandemic and bureaucratic red tape to transfer the land from the federal government to the city and then to the university.

S.C. State is one of 19 historically black universities and colleges created under the Second Morrill Act of 1890 that supports research, extension and teaching in the food and agricultural sciences.

Charleston Moves hosting November advocacy ride Sam Spence

Panorama looks to fill void left by Chronicle The Carolina Panorama, a weekly newspaper covering issues affecting AfricanAmerican communities in the Midlands, is planning to begin distributing a Charlestonanchored edition after the city’s longtime Chronicle newsweekly ceased publication.

In an interview Nov. 10 in Charleston, owner Nate Abraham told the City Paper he is putting together circulation and distribution plans for the Lowcountry Panorama, with the new edition launching in early 2022.

“There are about 800,000 people in the Charleston area, and that’s a lot,” Abraham told the City Paper. “And in the AfricanAmerican community, there’s about 240,000, but no one’s telling those stories …

No one’s focusing on accomplishments in the day-to-day lives of the people in the community. So, that’s what we doing in Columbia, and Charleston is a large market that should have something similar.”

The Carolina Panorama was founded in 1986 by Abraham’s late father, Nathaniel Abraham Sr., who previously worked with Columbia civil rights leader Modjeska Simkins at her Palmetto Leader news-

paper, eventually taking the reins in the mid-1960s. Nathaniel Abraham Sr. died in August at 87.

Today, the Panorama distributes about 10,000 copies each Thursday in the Columbia area as well as the towns of Orangeburg and St. Matthews.

“We believe in being hyper-local, so our papers will reflect the citizens of Charleston. Just like we’re doing in Columbia, our content is about local people,” Nate Abraham said. “We’re not going to get a whole lot of stuff off the wire servers … The content has to be local.”

Charleston stories will be published in print and on the paper’s website, currently accessed at carolinapanorama.com.

The Chronicle founding publisher Jim French died in July, just shy of the paper’s 50th anniversary. Early this year, The Chronicle appeared to have ceased publication and its website went offline.

The paper’s current owners, French’s grandsons Tolbert and Damion Smalls, have not responded to inquiries by local reporters from the City Paper or other outlets. —Sam Spence

Mobility advocacy nonprofit Charleston Moves is hosting another awarenessraising bike ride Nov. 20, when the group will lead a police-escorted ride over Wappoo Cut Bridge along Folly Road and through other nearby intersections primed for pedestrian improvements.

“This is a unique opportunity to comfortably enjoy beautiful handlebar views of the Wappoo Creek between James Island and West Ashley, while supporting [Charleston Moves’] work to advance safe, equitable crossing and crucial connections,” said Savannah Brennan, Charleston Moves director of programming, in a press release.

Charleston Moves previously hosted a ride across the North Bridge spanning the Ashley River between North Charleston and West Ashley on Oct. 2 in support of a safer pedestrian option.

Participants are encouraged to stop

by Maybank Public House’s outdoor beer garden for brunch after the ride.

Charleston Moves will offer chances for the public to take action in support of multi-model access over the creek in an effort to bolster a new bike- and pedestrian-friendly plan for the crossing.

Participants must RSVP in advance and check in at the Charleston Moves table behind Maybank Public House no later than 10:30 a.m. the morning of the ride. The ride will begin at 11 a.m.

The ride is 7.5 miles long and will take about an hour to complete on the road with normal traffic, though it will be escorted by Charleston police. Children 12 and under cannot participate on individual bikes. —Skyler Baldwin

Housing report opens door to equity commission recommendations A report presented to Charleston City Council on Nov. 9 delved into a number of programs stemming from recommendations made by the city’s Special Commission on Equity, Inclusion and Racial Conciliation earlier this year.

The report was originally reviewed Oct. 28 during a meeting of the Community Development Committee.

Though the commission’s 120 recommendations were not all well-received by every member of council, and motions to accept the commission’s report as well as make the commission permanent stalled during meetings, efforts to make housing more fair and equitable have gained some traction in the community development committee.

Some concerns raised before council related to racial inequities in home ownership, including higher rates of dilapidation in homes owned by Black families. Others related to land-use policies that make it more difficult for low-income families to remain in lifelong homes on the peninsula.

Councilman Ross Appel reiterated that affordable housing units are the strongest way of addressing these inequities.

“If you’re an African-American family living in heirs property on the West side, and you have a Charleston single that’s fallen into disrepair over the generations, you are doomed,” he said. “These are the things that are preventing our housing market from functioning property: there’s

only so much that can be done with programs and city grants and initiatives … We need to be bringing thousands of affordable units online every year.”

Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg and Councilmen Jason Sakran and William Dudley Gregorie, during the Oct. 28 community development meeting, expressed joy at the prospect of acting on some of the recommendations made by the special commission.

“I’ve seen that the recommendations from the Commission on Equity, Inclusion and Racial Conciliation regarding housing and mobility are all accepted and being acted upon,” Tecklenburg cheered. “We are doing this, y’all! Man the torpedos and full speed ahead!” —Skyler Baldwin

the marketplace and find a plan that works for them, and with the number of options now available, having that guidance is more important than ever, Quenga said.

“For the whole state, but especially in our area, the plan options are vast,” she said. “For some counties, there are four different carriers to choose from, so all the carriers expanded where they’re offering coverage.” And none reduced coverage, Quenga she said.

“So there is certainly a lot of choice for consumers, but that means it can be more confusing, and not paying attention to the details of the plan can be a real problem,” she said. “You have to look more closely at the plan, and that means people have to understand what things like ‘deductible’ mean in order for things to make sense.”

The Palmetto Project, which helped thousands of families get approved for federal subsidized health care through the marketplace during the special enrollment period earlier this year, has its largest support team ever, nine people dedicated to helping people find an insurance plan that works for them.

And after being longtime supporters of the federal marketplace, the S.C. Small Business Chamber of Commerce is working under a federal navigator grant to help them connect people to insurance policies.

“What we’re encouraging people to do is contact us for more information,” Knapp said. “The number I give is our telephone number, and it goes right to my desk. We talk, we find out what they need and we hook them up with a navigator. We don’t make any money, we don’t sell insurance, this is just something we’ve been supportive of for years.”

“Even if they don’t call us, if they have their own agent, hopefully we’ve inspired them to call them to look at policies on the marketplace,” he said. “They may know somebody at the community health centers, and maybe they call them.”

Quenga said many small clinics in the Lowcountry and statewide are also Certified Application Counselors, recognized by the federal government as people who are capable of helping clients find an insurance plan through the marketplace.

“It’s really important to look for someone local you trust to help you figure it out, because there are so many plans for our area,” she said.

Enrollment normally runs through Dec. 15, but has been extended through Jan. 15, 2022, due to the pandemic. And if you do enroll ahead of the Dec. 15 deadline, but want to make changes, you can switch prior to Jan. 15.

Charleston’s proposed SC legislative districts flunk test C

harleston state House of Representative districts would get more partisan, less competitive and less diverse under the draft proposal put forward by the Republican-led redistricting committee last week. And despite continued growth, Charleston County’s House delegation would actually shrink by two members, costing residents power and influence over the next decade.

This is strategic to minimize the impact of local Democrats.

Republican leaders open every meeting of the House and Senate redistricting committees by describing the process by which state cartographers divide up S.C. voters. Arcane buzz phrases like “communities of interest,” “deviation” and “incumbency” may make voters feel the process is thoughtful and thorough. But in reality, it’s the opposite.

Virtually nobody with a critical eye on the new proposals scores them as competitive or ensuring democratic representation. The League of Women Voters says only 12 of the state’s 124 House districts would be competitive.

For example, in both plans, James Island residents are used to disperse Democratic votes or consolidate GOP blocs.

One additional Senate district anchored in West Ashley could go to Democrats, but to do so, it would slice through James Island and downtown, meaning the peninsula would be represented by three different senators. In Mount Pleasant residents’ cries for common-sense Senate boundaries continue to go unheard, with four senators’ districts proposed to criss-cross East Cooper — none of whom currently live in the town. That kind of representation in Mount Pleasant diffuses voters’ power and means some communities go ignored.

In addition to excising two Democratic House districts from the Charleston County delegation, House Republicans have

bent over backwards to protect their own. State Rep. William Cogswell’s district is now proposed to span Mount Pleasant, downtown and the predominantly white inner-suburban areas of West Ashley and James Island. The proposed district is 88% white — one of the highest concentrations in a state where one in three residents is Black.

In all, the proposed districts consolidate local nonwhite voters into Democratic districts, with Black voters making up less than 15% of each existing GOP district. This is a process known in the parlance of gerrymandering as “packing.”

Looking at an egregious example of packing in Bamberg County, League of Women Voters vice president Lynn Teague wrote on Facebook that proposed House District 90 “would be basically a dead district in November, the outcome already known.”

“This harms minority voters. There are so many in the one district that many of their votes are technically wasted — not needed to achieve a win,” she said.

And where lawmakers haven’t stacked the deck by the numbers, they just draw new lines.

S.C. Rep. Lin Bennett’s West Ashley district won’t see much demographic change, but her former Democratic opponent, Ed Sutton, is now conveniently drawn into Democratic state Rep. Leon Stavrinakis’ neighboring district.

So who wins in all this political fiddling?

Teague: “No one but the incumbent and maybe incumbents’ in adjacent districts, happy to see all those minority votes neutralized.”

S.C. voters deserve more than the take-what-you-get-and-likeit manipulations of our state’s elected Republican leaders. Take it seriously and give us fair representation.

Bad idea to ban books and manufacture outrage By Andy Brack

This has been going on by both sides for years, as noted years ago by critic H.L. Mencken: “The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.”

This week, Gov. Henry McMaster called for an immediate investigation at all of the state’s public schools into whether they had “obscene and pornographic materials.” He also ordered state police to probe whether any state laws had been broken.

Seems some parents in Fort Mill complained about a book titled Gender Queer: A Memoir, written by award-winning new author Maia Kobabe. The State newspaper reported the book is an autobiography “about how Kobabe dealt with being nonbinary while growing up.” But according to McMaster, it includes “sexually explicit and pornographic depictions which easily meet or exceed the statutory definition of obscenity.” That’s remarkably similar to what conservatives in other states have been saying for more than a month as they railed to get the book banned.

A reality check: By drawing attention to the book in Trying to get rid of the age of Amazon, the author probably now will sell printed words and more books here in little old South Carolina. Why? Because people — high school students, in particular cartoons doesn’t get — don’t like being told what to do. And if they can’t get a book in one place, they’ll find it some other place, rid of ideas. including paying $16 to get it delivered.

On the ballot, again, will be McMaster, who counts on Christian conservatives as a big base of support. Meanwhile, it’s likely an Upstate challenger will emerge. So what’s a veteran candidate to do? Whip up a moral crisis to reacquaint Upstate voters with his moral fiber.

It’s not inconceivable McMaster’s political handlers have been lying in wait for just the right book, movie, speech, snub or slip of the tongue to use politically to energize base supporters. When they learned about Kobabe’s book being banned by a Virginia county school board and later challenged at schools in several states, they sprang.

Photog Andre Hinds is the maestro of FOMO

Andre Hinds admits that his job and his personality are sometimes at odds. He spends many of his work evenings at clubs and parties, surrounded by music and dancing and big energies. This can be a little difficult for Hinds, a self-identified introvert. He views his outgoing, highenergy, high-demand work as a role he slides into, like an actor stepping on a stage.

“I’m an introvert who does an extrovert’s job.

So for me it’s very, very difficult sometimes.

You don’t have the energy to be around that many people, especially strangers you don’t know. I have to basically turn on ‘theHinds ater me’ to do my job.”

Hinds finds the energy to keep going by taking life breaks and vacations away from everything, especially after long weekend engagements.

The man certainly earns those breaks, becoming one of the most successful Charleston photographers and videog-

Hinds grew his photography following by starting to shoot fast-moving events and dynamic parties raphers over the past five years. He has worked with local clubs and events, organizations, musicians, filmmakers and has taken beautiful pictures for weddings, headshots and other personal events.

But he’s more than a photographer. He’s becoming a total social media developer.

“Everything’s all-encompassed. So it just depends on what the client needs. I think it’s cool for me. I like being a one-stop shop,” he said. If a client wants great social media marketing, they would normally need to find multiple people to handle those roles — a talented photographer, editor and videographer are needed to create great commercials and ads. Hinds does all those things himself. So when a company hires him, they get everything in one person.

Hinds has been working in photography for at least a decade, with the last six years having been entirely professionally. Videography is relatively new for him, having added it three years ago. But he’s been editing videos for ages. He used to edit together wrestling compilations from YouTube clips in his spare time as a high schooler, honing skills that have made him a sought-after video editor.

Starting working locally with area DJs, things escalated as people noticed his work and his gear. Hinds’ early days were spent eagerly taking on gigs, paid and not, to give himself the experience and to show off his talents to potential clients. His small gigs led to bigger opportunities, eventually leading to his current collaborations with major national brands. Just this year, he’s been working with Krug Champagne as well as Bud Light. He’s starting work with Southern Eagle Distributing, which also does sports marketing with the Stingrays,

CofC and the RiverDogs.

But parties and clubs are how Andre got his foot in the door.

“It’s wild. You’re observing but also in everybody’s face at the same time,” he said.

The position of sticking a camera and light in the faces of people who are trying to have a good time is awkward, Hinds said, but it’s something he’s found ways to work around to capture images that make you feel like you need to be at the next event.

He’s a maestro of FOMO — the fear of missing out.

Hinds continues to evolve his artistry.

He’s moved into music video production, with five in the works set for early 2022 releases. He keeps adding production equipment and learning to master them.

Filming for music videos and cinema brings in different challenges than clubs and parties. He’s excited to shoot for the story instead of exclusively for the edit. He also has a documentary releasing at the end of next year on the life of the late jazz trumpeter Joey Morant.

“I feel like the only way to keep doing this, because you get so burned out doing the same stuff over and over again, is to find new ways to fuel that passion of what you wanna do. So I definitely wanna go and do more music videos. I wanna do more narrative filmmaking. I wanna do short films. I wanna do all of it because I wanna see how far I can take it. That’s kinda my goal.”

With Hinds’ incredible depth of talents and proven track record, he’s going to have absolutely no problem getting the chance to do whatever he wants in this industry. “I’m never afraid to learn. I’m never afraid to try.

I’m always afraid to fail, obviously, but it comes with the territory.”

Park Circle mainstay South of Broadway Theatre Co. will run one of its final shows from its East Montague Avenue theater Nov. 19-21.

Guys and Dolls, Jr. is a youth company version of the beloved classic Broadway musical.

The production, directed by Elissa Horrell, is presented in the round, ensuring no bad seats in the house.

Drag Race’s Tina Burner stops in Charleston Tina Burner, star of RuPaul’s Drag Race, will perform a cabaret set at Charleston Music Hall on Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. Burner’s show mixes stand-up comedy and Broadway standards into a personal story of her life.

Numbers include “What I Did for Love” from A Chorus Line and “Rose’s Turn” from Gypsy. Burner competed on the 13th season of Drag Race and is a former National Miss Comedy Queen and winner of the GLAM Award for Best Cabaret and Best Comedy Perfomer.

By Kevin Wilson Charleston’s Lucas Barker began his acting career around the age of 5, even before he could read. Instead, he had to memorize entire scripts by trading lines with his mother until he was sufficiently prepared to deliver them for auditions.

Now 15, he’s not (yet) a household name, but you may recognize his youthful face from appearances on the small screen. His TV credits include: Ratched, Dave, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Mentalist, Justified, Criminal Minds, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and more.

That’s an impressive resume for a Wando High student. But Barker’s CV is about to get more interesting as he makes his feature film debut next month opposite Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand in Joel Coen’s new movie, The Tragedy of Macbeth.

Not at all intimidated about the prospect of re-interpreting a Shakespeare classic, Barker said that he saw this opportunity as, not only a big break, but an incredible chance to further hone his craft under the mentorship of several true masters. “This was one of the best things to ever happen to me.”

That said, it was still a little daunting once Barker actually showed up for work.

“I was extremely nervous when I walked in for my first table read with all these incredibly talented and very well-known people, but I quickly realized that they are all very nice and easy to be around,” he told the City Paper.

New Jersey-transplants Marissa and Mario Massarelli settled down in the Lowcountry in July to start the next phase of their lives – Holy City Cannoli.

The couple made the decision to leave the “hustle and bustle” of New Jersey for the “laid-back” atmosphere of Charleston.

“It’s very family-oriented,” Marissa said about the decision. “Which is really important for us since we have a newborn.”

The couple vacationed in Charleston for several years and even got married here a few years back.

“We just knew this was the place where we wanted to be,” Marissa added.

Working in the food industry isn’t a new thing for Marissa or Mario, however. It runs in her family.

Marissa’s father, who moved at a young age to the U.S. from Sicily — birthplace of the cannoli — started several restaurants, where Marissa worked and lived most of her early life. Mario was a part of her life then, too, as the now-married couple met in elementary school, worked in pizzerias together and, before starting Holy City Cannoli, worked in “the corporate world” for seven years before making a change.

“We wanted to do something on our own together and start our own business,” said Marissa.

The decision to move and start a business was planned, as Marissa’s family has the same type of cannoli business up North and the couple wanted to bring it to their new home.

Now for those who don’t know what a cannoli is, it’s a fried, tube-shaped cinnamon-flavored shell, stuffed with a ricotta cheese-based filling, with optional toppings. Common flavors include vanilla and chocolate.

“Talking to people down here,” said Mario. “Everyone’s just used to those one or two flavors and it’s good, but it’s not what we’re providing.”

Holy City Cannoli prides itself on its specialty flavors – like cookies and cream, Nutella and birthday cake, “which a lot of kids love because of the sprinkles on the end”

Cannoli by Marissa and Mario Massarelli (below) are handmade and piped to order, with some nontraditional flavors like Nutella and birthday cake – and a rotating menu of seasonal flavors.

Currently, for their fall flavors, Holy City has pumpkin and caramel apple. And over the winter, look for flavors like mint chocolate chip and tiramisu.

All the fillings and shells are handmade by the couple. Batches are made and prepared in a commissary kitchen, put into pastry bags and piped fresh to order into shells.

While waiting for their custom-built trailer – designed by Marissa and assembled by Gorilla Fabrication in North Charleston – the couple started doing popups. Now, after three and a half months, the trailer was built, and Holy City Cannoli was ready for the road. Literally.

The trailer —and the couple — can be found around town two to three nights a week, slinging cannoli all evening with a smile.

“I love the fast pace of it,” said Mario.

“Just seeing people’s faces and listening to them while we’re making it, because they’re able to watch us do it, it’s great.”

“At a lot of food trucks, you don’t really get to see in there, but with the way [Marissa] designed the trailer, you’re able to watch the whole process. It’s entertaining.”

The food truck was designed and “built around” a large island at the service window for Marissa and Mario to fresh-fill the cannoli in front of the customers.

“I think it’s important for customers to see the food prepared,” Marissa said. “It’s kind of tough when you go somewhere and all of the workers’ backs are turned toward

“One of the things we pride ourselves on is that 99% of the time, we will never run out of product. And that’s really important, especially for the people who are traveling 45 minutes to an hour to try our desserts.

We wanted to make sure we have everything to prepare for that.”

“Going to different communities, I think, is one of our favorite things, because people are excited – you bring that food to them, and they don’t really have to leave their home to get a nice dinner and dessert.”

Vertical Roots shares its story and impact on the ninth season of PBS’ START UP. “Not only is what they’re doing incredibly relevant to the agricultural issues happening around the country,” said producer Gary Bredow. “But I think Vertical Roots is going to become increasingly important in the future.”

College basketball season tipped earlier this month and some of the nation’s best teams will be in Charleston for the 14th annual Charleston Classic. The eight team-bracketed tournament will take place on November 18, 19 & 21 at TD Arena.

1. The Field Features Top-25 Nationally Ranked St. Bonaventure

St. Bonaventure debuted in the AP Poll with a #23 ranking. Many analysts are projecting the Bonnies to repeat as Atlantic 10 champions and return to the NCAA Tournament. NCAA reporter and longtime college basketball analyst Andy Katz had the Bonnies as one of his eight picks to be a dark horse for the 2022 Final Four.

Additionally, St. Bonaventure and West Virginia were highlighted on the projected 2022March Madness Bracketology by ESPN’s Joe Lunardi. Lunardi locked in the Bonnies at fifth and the Mountaineers seeded as ninth. Under head coach Bob Huggins, West Virginia has been featured in the 2010 NCAA Final Four, the 2010 Big East Championship, and 12 post season appearances including 10 NCAA Tournaments (five NCAA sweet 16s). Bob Huggins enters the 2021-2022 season ready to make history as he will be moving up the leaderboard for all-time wins, he currently is ranked 6th with over 900 career wins.

Each team will play three games over the period of four days. After Day 1 a “winners’ bracket” and “losers’ bracket” will be formed. Ultimately, a champion will be crowned after the championship game, which tips at 7:30 PM on Sunday, November 21.

4. Some of the Nations Top Young Talent Will be on Display

Two of the top 100 incoming freshman (according to the ESPN 100 rankings) will be featured. Ole Miss is home to the #42 overall recruit point guard Daeshun Ruffin. Marquette has #90 overall recruit Stevie Mitchell from the ESPN 100 list.

In addition, Darryl Morsell will be playing his first games with Marquette after transferring from University of Maryland where he won Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.

The Charleston Classic’s 2021 field is nothing short of tough competition. TD Arena will be hosting five 2021 post-season teams: NCAA Tournament teams: Clemson, West Virginia, and St. Bonaventure National Invitation Tournament (NIT): Ole Miss and Boise State

We can all probably agree that against the odds, and with a few exceptions, 2021 has been a rebound year for Charleston music. Local musicians got their footing back after the time spent “on leave” in 2020 facing the idea that live music could be labeled nonessential.

There have been a ton of new releases, such as Little Bird’s mind-expanding EP, Proxima: Gamma, Hot Mustard’s retro instrumental album, Mother Sauce, and Sounds of Black Fox’s elevated alt rock debut, Sometimes Things Work Out — which is true, it turns out.

rom the jump, Psycodelics’ flavor of Black American music has blended foundations of blues, jazz and disco with fresh funk rock.

Formed in 2019 as a four-piece consisting of bassist/vocalist Cam Wescott, keyboardist Noah Jones, drummer Sean Bing and guitarist Whitt Burn, the R&B fusion group has already taken many forms, adding guitarist James Rubush and drummer

Soul/R&B Act of the Year

Demario Kitt to its ranks and giving free rein for local musicians like Kanika Moore, Hrlum, Will Blackburn, Jeff Caldwell and Abstract that Rapper to drop in.

The Psycodelics’ stage presence is as multifaceted and emotive as its lineup, and with each member singing backing vocals, the already-potent sound retains even greater magic to make you get up and dance.

on penning the music for Psycodelics’ upcoming debut album, the songwriting and recording process has been collaborative, to say the least, considering every member writes music solo and with other local projects, such as rhythm and blues outfit Fox Hunt and the psych rock band just voted Jam Band of the Year, Little Bird.

And if City Paper’s 2021 Soul/R&B Act of the Year knows anything, it’s that music is boundaryless.

“There’s not a single person on the planet who doesn’t listen to some kind of music,” Wescott said. “If you go outside and hear the birds chirping, you are listening to music by default. To go to the beach and hear the soundscape of the ocean is to hear music. It’s what draws us together. It’s the one thing we can all agree on.”

With stylistic influences ranging from Earth, Wind & Fire and Parliament Funkadelic to Prince and James Brown, Psycodelics doesn’t relegate itself to any one specific mood.

“We’re going for a big powerful sound while also being able to be balanced and do slow sensual stuff and do the J Dilla hiphop and all the influences, all the jazz that’s tucked in there,” Wescott said.

Having knocked everyone’s socks off at The Royal American’s inaugural Boogieman Fest on Halloween, Psycodelics will keep the momentum going by closing for CeeLo Green at The Commodore on Dec. 4 and performing with local hip-hop artist Slim S.O.U.L. as Slimadelics at the Pour House on Dec. 9, with hip-hop groups MiKE L!VE & Good Trouble and JAHSCRIB. Not every tune nd album will break through, so keeping friendship at the center and letting go of material gains are values that drive Psycodelics.

“It’s about maintaining the love for the craft and letting all the other stuff come second,” Wescott said. “It will come just as a byproduct of staying focused on what it is that we love. I think we can all agree that 2021, despite all the humps that we had to get over, it was a year of miracles.

We’ve been getting things in order to come out the gate super strong and keep it there.”

It seems the complex music Tyrie is assembling has gotten some traction. For him, putting rap music in a different light or arranging chords and progressions in the right way is all about establishing a relationship with the listener.

“That’s my whole passion around this — that my music is able to shed a light. Can I bend this genre a little bit? I guess that’s where the journey is leading me right now.”

It’s not only in exploring industrial trap concepts on his past three albums, but in producing for local hip-hop acts like Indi’Gxld, Semkari and Clayton James that Tyrie has expanded his signature.

“One main big thing I’ve learned is don’t be afraid to learn,” he said. “Your project is a self-reflection of what you’re finding out and what’s going on in your reality and what you want to present.”

That applies to media crossovers like his clothing brand, Collective Perception, another step toward being a channel for local and regional expression, be it visual or audible.

“Can we collectively work out a way to bend everything together — I think we can. I just have to keep enforcing the idea that we can do this, that this will start to snowball together and keep rolling.”

She Returns From War On the last leg of her tour, Hunter Park recalled the moment at a show in a barn tucked away in Maquoketa, Iowa, when she stopped singing and 700 people sang the lyrics for her song, “Swamp Witch,” a magical moment for her “woman-abandonedcosmic Americana” outfit, She Returns From War. More than a ballad of self-actualization, Park’s latest single, “Snakeskin Boots,” marks a re-entry into writing a good-old empowering country song.

“I get down on myself, and then remind myself that I’m a strong personality,” she said of those times of feeling overwhelmed. “I like fashion and style, and I wanted to incorporate that imagery — like if you’re dressed to the nines, and if you’re

looking fly, then you can get over whatever the fuck is going on at any current time.”

Affectionately framing her act as “tropical goth country,” Park has claimed a space in Charleston’s derivations of Americana. It’s not only the uniqueness of the location from which Charleston musicians write, but the moment’s-notice collaborations that allow for textured elements, she said.

“The community sustains itself off of people’s willingness to work together. One reason that I’ve stayed in Charleston as long as I have is you don’t get the same thing in other places — you have to work your way up some kind of invisible ladder.”

To shake that pandemic hiatus feeling, Juicethedon put out three full length albums this year.

“I want to have my own blueprint,” he said of his immersion in the DIY hip-hop culture Charleston fosters. As a north-New Jersey transplant, Juice found a place within the local artist group, 187 Collective.

His breakout song, “Ain’t Like Dat,” reflects a laid-back facet of his storytelling abilities, reminiscent of Run the Jewels or MF Doom.

With his album, Can’t Stop Won’t Stop, the title speaks for itself — “I’m not going to stop, I’m going to keep grinding.” The project came together at a time when he thought he really didn’t want to make anything else and his streams were at a standstill. But with each release, he grows into his next form.

“Coming down here, it broke my heart, but I’ve found a life,” he said of growing up with musician parents involved in the New York City scene. “The whole North is an inspiration by itself, because that’s the mecca of hip-hop.”

“Basically, ‘Ain’t Like Dat,’ it’s about the guy everybody doubts,” he said.

Guardian’s Warlock

With nods to Iron Maiden and Motorhead, Guardian’s Warlock is delivering “thrash and power with a slight [bit] of punk,” said frontman PJ Steven. Moving from the studio back to the garage for its most recent output, the four-piece is not afraid to keep things for the band’s upcoming album.

One thing the group is not in short supply of is character, literally — Steven will put on skits for Warlock promo videos with his bandmates, guitarist “Gentlemen Shredder” Dustin Broach, bassist Jaysus Rockso and drummer “Squeaky Stan” Danny Wilton. Characterization apparently carries into the songwriting as well, considering Warlock’s newest single, “The End is Near,” is about a villain from the video game, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

“We don’t want to just be jeans and shirts playing a couple songs, we have individual characters for our shows,” Steven said.

“For example, right now, my character is reigning defending world heavyweight champion of Charleston and I come out with a belt. Dustin, who is the cat man, will sometimes put on cat makeup. We do silly things like that to keep it fresh.”

“I think the changes as a writer reflect the changes that I’ve had as a human being, just getting older and having more experiences that open up a new depth,” said Justin Osborne on his journey leading Susto, Charleston’s ever-fluid psych folk group that has stamped out tunes charting life, love and loss.

“When I started Susto, I was determined to be confessional,” Osborne said. “There’s a common thread through all the Susto albums of me working through my own problems.

And I’m beginning to realize I’ve leaned a little too heavily on songs to be my therapy, when really it’s more of an outlet.”

On the edge of a 2022 tour for Susto’s fourth studio album, Time in the Sun, Osborne feels a marked balance in his songwriting, not just with knowing what is too much or too little collaboration or remembering to take notes before he forgets, but in being content.

“You might want to reinvent the wheel because you get bored, but your voice is going to be your voice and your style of writing is not going to be as different as you think.”

New hip-hop festival coming to Purple Buffalo In an effort to support S.C. art in its many forms, The Grilled Cheese Show and Lush Artist Group have joined forces with Purple Buffalo to present a lineup of local experimental hip-hop artists for Abridged Festival on Nov. 20 at 6 p.m.

The fest was curated to spotlight underrepresented vendors, brands and musicians in the Lowcountry.

Performances will feature Lil Xelly, Lil Turbo, Masuta, Micah G, Yng Mattress, Bushido Boyz, Lush_Carter, Semkari and DJ DollaMenu.

Frequency ambassador Arlyn Ruddy offers sound meditation and immersion therapy to Charlestonians do not prove to be tragic.

“From a spiritual standpoint, I had some radical things happen to me, including intense energy movements. But the final piece of clarity came to me as I was participating in my first sound bath. In that moment, I realized how profoundly transformational sound can be. You can keep it on the surface level if you want to merely feel good and relax, but I discovered that you can also let it take you a lot further in terms of making physical, mental, spiritual and emotional progress. I quit my job and went into sound therapy full-time not long after that.”

As a sound therapist, she applies specific performance techniques to a variety of instruments to help people confront specific aspects of themselves and allow for personal growth.

Having recovered from her own losses and addictions, Ruddy replanted herself in Charleston where she now performs her work in small private sessions and large public events in the area.

Although she appears to have landed right where she belongs, Arlyn Ruddy didn’t just fall into her groundbreaking work as a sound therapist. Her unconventional journey actually began at a young age.

“When I was a kid, I would break down music by recording songs to a cassette tape, repeatedly hitting pause then play in an attempt to figure out what they were saying and what it all meant,” Ruddy said.

“Once I understood the underlying mechanics of how the tracks came together, I started writing my own lyrics, playing guitar and exploring a variety of percussion instruments.”

It was while searching for a larger purpose in California in the late 1990s that Ruddy somehow found her way into an impromptu drum circle with the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart at the bottom of a 1,500-year-old redwood tree that was then occupied by environmental activist Julia “Butterfly” Hill.

She also briefly served as emcee for a Los Angeles-based hip-hop act that once shared the stage with Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon.

Rather than finding what she was looking for in her many meanderings, Ruddy began to spiral downward.

“I was diverted from my original path, in part, because I had a notebook containing all of my lyrics stolen by some stranger that had needed a ride,” she said.

That loss, on top of other life-changing events unfolding around her, was more than Ruddy could bear.

“I got really into drugs after that and I pretty much lost all of my drive,” she said.

“I don’t know how to explain it, but my creativity was hindered for a long, long time.

And I couldn’t bring myself to write again for years after that.”
