Gender Queer is the latest book to draw ire from conservative politicians

CP, Gettyimeages.com

News 11.24.2021

By Sam Spence South Carolina voters next year will elect a new state superintendent of schools for the first time since 2015, as education issues stoke divisive and controversial political debates that show no sign of simmering. With the open state superintendent seat, along with the governor’s race and congressional races on ballots, how will education affect South Carolina’s 2022 election season? Schoolkids and their classes have long been the battlefield for adults’ culture wars, from the 1925 Scopes trial over teaching evolution to more recent fights over books like the memoir, Fun Home. But State Superintendent Molly Spearman’s tenure is winding down as students, teachers and families trudge out of the pandemic that created classroom chaos that wore on even the toughest educators. Those experiences will leave a mark, said Steve Nuzum, a Columbia teacher and research director for SC for Ed. “Teachers are even more exhausted than before, more under attack thanks to fake controversies and the ongoing pandemic and working in schools that are more understaffed than any time during my 15-year career,” he told the City Paper via email. Education is often a top issue among voters, but recent frenzies put teachers and students in the spotlight as politicians look to stir up voter bases. Just this month, Gov. Henry McMaster waded into the culture war du jour, becoming the latest GOP governor to take aim at Gender Queer, an illustrated memoir in some school libraries that includes graphical depictions of sexual acts. Republicans in Virginia and Texas have also seized on the book. McMaster isn’t the only one in S.C. Charleston-area Republican state Rep. Lin Bennett filed a bill last week that would severely limit classroom instruction regarding sex and gender identity, as well as penalize teachers judged to have omitted details from materials or interjected personal beliefs, among other things. Local school board and city meetings have also become showdowns for anti-mask parents this fall, ratcheting up the energy around classroom issues. Education controversies even bubbled up in a discussion of what to do with the former monument to John C. Calhoun, CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

Barbados will become a republic on Nov. 30 when it removes Queen Elizabeth as the head of state on the 55th anniversary of the nation’s independence from England. Barbados and Charleston have a historic and cultural tie that dates back to April 1670. Settlers from Barbados established the Carolina colony which grew into modern-day Charleston. As a parliamentary republic, Barbados will have a ceremonial elected president as head of state. The prime minister remains the head of government. The move cuts the last vestiges of the colonial umbilical cord with England, said Charleston resident Rhoda Green, Barbados’ honorary consul to South Carolina and founder of the Barbados and the Carolina Legacy Foundation. Green is planning an event here to celebrate the moment at the end of the year. —Herb Frazier

Voucher effort seeks to siphon SC public education dollars

One man managed to shoplift approximately $250 worth of baby formula from a grocery store. RUNNERS UP A woman found her car with all four tires slashed, both windshield wipers ripped off, and the fuel door torn from the vehicle. She told officers that she had been having issues with her boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend who came to her apartment and stated, “I’m gonna put that bitch on all four flats,” according to an incident report. One man called police after he was robbed while attempting to buy crack. The man did not wish to file charges, telling officers he only wanted to make them aware of the situation. He also mentioned that he was high on crack at the time.

News 11.24.2021

An officer discovered marijuana in a man’s car during a traffic stop. When asked if the marijuana was his, the man told the officer that “he did not know that there was marijuana in the glove box, but that he does smoke marijuana occasionally and could have put it there and forgot about it.”

Calhoun statue loan request scrutinized Charleston’s Commission on History on Nov. 17 voted to wait for more information before it makes a decision on a request from Los Angeles museum curators to borrow the John C. Calhoun statue for an exhibit featuring similar figures that stood as monuments until recent years. Commissioners expressed concerns during the nearly two-hour virtual meeting that the Calhoun monument could be used as part of a politically charged collection. Curators with LAXART, a Los Angelesbased arts group, are seeking monuments like Calhoun to install as part of an exhibition at L.A.’s Museum of Contemporary Art alongside works by present-day artists. During a presentation about tentative plans for the 2023 show, co-curator Hamza Walker of LAXART said organizers have secured commitments for statues from Baltimore, Pittsburgh and elsewhere. “The goal of the project is to mark what is a historic moment … a moment when we are made aware of the fact that we are living through history,” Walker said in a

30-minute presentation to members of the commission, including outgoing City Councilman Harry Griffin. “This is not at all an exercise in shaming anyone. That’s not at all what this exhibition is about—the furthest thing from our mind,” he said. “This is a teachable moment.” Attorney Robert Rosen remained among the most skeptical of the panel. “You said the object of this was not shaming. I’m not convinced to that,” Rosen said. “I think that whole logic of the whole enterprise is a shame. But I could be convinced to the contrary.” Ultimately, the commission voted to put off the decision until it got more information from Walker about the artists and figures who are planned to be associated with the project. But city council can decide the issue on its own, regardless of what the commission concludes. In 2020, Charleston City Council voted to remove the statue with the intention of moving it to a museum. Those plans have not come to fruition. —Sam Spence

Look for another education battle in 2022 as key Republican leaders push a bill that would siphon public education dollars to private schools under the guise of “education freedom.” S.C. Rep. Shannon Erickson, R-Beaufort, recently sent an email through the Palmetto Promise Institute to push H. 3976, a bill she introduced in February to create “education scholarship accounts” for tens of thousands of early reading program or special needs students. Anyone in the proposed program would get about $5,000 a year in an online savings account. Erickson didn’t respond to several inquiries. But in the email, she wrote the measure, which included House Speaker Jay Lucas and 62 other mostly GOP members as co-sponsors, “would empower low- and middle-income families with control and choice over their child’s education in a way never before seen in South Carolina.” But advocates at the S.C. Education Association say such rhetoric offers nice-sounding buzzwords that mask a potential shift to education vouchers that would steer millions of public school dollars toward private schools. SCEA Executive Director Todd Jaeck said Erickson’s bill mirrors attempts in other states to dismantle public schools. Oran Smith, senior fellow at the conservative Palmetto Promise Institute, recently told Statehouse Report that Erickson’s proposal was part of a national trend. Over the last two years, 18 states have added or extended similar programs that are working successfully, he said. The battle over the measure is expected to get started in January when the legislative session resumes. —Andy Brack

Mace bill would federally decriminalize pot A draft bill unveiled last week by U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace would eliminate federal prohibitions on cannabis, but stops short of fully legalizing marijuana, instead letting state leaders set rules on their own. The States Reform Act, unveiled at a Capitol Hill press conference Nov. 16, is one of the first mainstream Republican attempts to regulate marijuana at the federal level. Mace’s bill would remove marijuana from prohibited drug lists, establish a 3% sales tax and allow states to set laws on marijuana. While Mace’s provisions appear more conservative than proposals already intro-

duced by Democrats, all the bills come as attitudes continue to swing dramatically away from hardline anti-drug campaigns supporting strict control on marijuana.

Wide support for decriminalization

Despite the loosening of laws by some states, marijuana remains a federally prohibited drug. Public opinion polling shows bipartisan support for at least some legalization of marijuana. An April poll by Pew Research

Center showed 60% of U.S. adults said marijuana should be legal for medical and recreational use, with another 31% supporting medical use only. Former Congressman Joe Cunningham and Democratic state Sen. Mia McLeod have both made marijuana reform part of their campaigns for governor. While Mace said a half-dozen Republicans would join her in supporting the States Reform Act, rank-and-file home-state Republicans aren’t too sure, with S.C. GOP chair Drew McKissick saying the party is “unequivocally against legalization.” —Sam Spence

when one city commissioner zeroed in on the 1619 Project, a New York Times series examining early American racism that conservatives have vowed to preemptively block from school curricula. And when Charleston City Council was debating how to handle recommendations to root out systemic racism in the city, all it took was a mention of the 1619 Project and critical race theory to ultimately sink any earnest discussion of what to do. But even as the state narratives mirror national talking points, College of Charleston political science professor Kendra Stewart doubts it will trickle up to affect top-ticket races. “In general, the other statewide constitutional officers’ races do not garner much attention or attract their own fol-

lowing enough to influence the governor’s race,” she told the City Paper. “I do not think that a more conservative school superintendent candidate would bring out enough supporters to do anything for the governor’s race — but you never know in S.C.!” It’s a critical time for state schools, Nuzum said, as education faces pressure from reform-minded groups intent on expanding acceptable uses for taxpayer money within private schools. “I think public school systems are at an inflection point: Either the public will step up to defend them, or we’ll collectively let a minority of community members and outside interest groups damage them in order to push agendas like privatization,” Nuzum said. The leader of one of those groups Nuzum said, is Ellen Weaver, the president of the conservative Palmetto Promise Institute

think tank who has already announced she will run to replace Spearman. Palmetto Promise’s policy pitches don’t stray too far from rank-and-file conservative talking points, but focus heavily on education. In an op-ed Sunday in The State kicking off her campaign, Weaver pledged to uproot the “one-size-fits-all system” by cutting bureaucracy and shifting education dollars.

“Divisive political agendas,” Weaver wrote, “have no place in our classrooms.” But with S.C. schools living on scraps for a generation, those deficiencies can help drive the objectives of groups like Weaver’s, Nuzum said. “These interests rely on failures in understaffed, micromanaged and underfunded schools,” he said, “to push the narrative that the best solution is vouchers or private takeovers.”

4 easy ways to support local Charleston businesses this holiday S

upporting local businesses this holiday season is one of the easiest and most effective ways to have a lasting impact in our community in a year where so much has been out of our own direct control. Charleston has experienced massive change over the past 10 years, and much of the growth has been good. Longtime locals will gladly tell you of times when vacant storefronts outnumbered businesses in operation on King Street. Of course, that success has also caused some growing pains. Congestion, cost of living and demands on our infrastructure have increased. But Charleston residents have fostered a unique, locally focused economy that often champions small, homespun businesses over generic cookie-cutter operations with far-flung CEOs. But it won’t stay that way without a little work from all of us. “We believe our dollars are actually votes for the kind of place we want to live in. Every dollar we spend with a local business — be it retail, with a service provider or an experience — has the power to recirculate throughout the community, being passed along from local business to another and supporting a healthy local economy,” said Jordan Amaker, marketing director for Lowcountry Local First. We heartily agree. Here are a handful of ways you can support local businesses and the people behind them this holiday:

Views 11.24.2021

1. Avoid supply-chain woes by staying local. You might’ve heard there’s quite a shipping backlog due to the pandemic, leading to late deliveries and high prices. (It’s going to be a tough holiday for people in the market for the latest tech and appliances.) But you know where the supply chain is just fine? At your local store or gallery where gifts are on shelves now, ready for you to take home.

8

Amaker: “In a time when the world is facing logistics backlogs and shipping delays, there’s an added incentive to go down the street and come home right away with a unique gift. Instant gratification!” 2. Be intentional with your buying. It is oh-so convenient to order a sleigh-full of gifts to be dropped at your door in the next 48 hours. But you’re stacking the deck against the local businesses that an Amazon truck will drive past on the way to your house. Instead, make a plan and seek personal gifts made by real people in your community. Yes, it may take a little longer and it may cost a little more. But if you have the means to forgo your Prime delivery for items you could buy around the corner, please consider it. Another example: If your favorite restaurant offers online ordering directly, ditch delivery apps that shortchange proprietors and go to the source. 3. Seek the people behind the gifts you’re buying. There are still at least a half-dozen holiday markets on tap over the next few weeks. Many times, the people selling products are the people who made them. Our buy-local movement is built off of people in our community, fueled by personal relationships between the people who call a place home. By digging in and engaging in even a quick chat while you shop, you’re helping deepen those connections. (For market locations, visit events.charlestoncitypaper.com.) 4. Preach and live the gospel of local. Marketing guru Seth Godin teaches that creating connections to a person, idea or product is all about finding common purpose. As he explains it, “People like us do things like this.” Know it or not, people are watching what you do, what you post on social media, where you go, who you’re with, etc. Make it count. We’re fortunate to live in a place where people visit for vacation — somewhere with a real sense of place. That’s no accident. It’s because of you and others who care. Keep it up. Enjoy the holidays.

They’re not. In fact, their laughable work will make South Carolina’s noisy partisan divides worse. Their work is nothing more than a bold build of an electoral map of 124 House districts so more Republicans win and the voting power of Black South Carolinians is dispersed. Their work strives to sow confusion in voting, not improve democracy. They should be ashamed of the way they’re taunting democratic principles of fairness, inclusion and equality. But they’ll be back in special session Dec. 1 for Act Two — the public process of justifying the inequities and partisan districts they claim are fair. You should contact your state representaInstead of 2022 elections tive in Columbia today and demand that he or she vote against the laughable plan passed being about Republicans last week by the House Judiciary Committee. and Democrats, make it And if they end up voting for it, you and your neighbors should let them know they’ll face a about new blood versus spirited reckoning next year in primary and incumbents. general elections. In fact, every single member of the South Carolina House of Representatives who votes for these proposed new districts should face a serious challenger in 2022. Let’s use the power that’s left to vote these people fiddling with democracy out of office — all of them who are spitting on competition. Instead of 2022 elections being about Republicans and Democrats, make it about new blood versus incumbents. “Get rid of incumbents” should be the rallying cry of 2022. If you think redistricting inequities are hyperbole, look at an analysis that highlights how messed up the proposed House districts are: Precinct splits: Of the 2,000-plus voting precincts in the state, 123 now have split precincts, which means some voters in the precinct vote for one state representative and others for another. Split precincts create confusion and delays at the polls. Number of split precincts in the proposed map: 370. Partisan districts: The House plan reduced competition by creating additional Republican-leaning districts, from 79 to 84; more Democratic-leaning districts, from 29 to 31, and more majority-minority districts, from 30 to 32. All of this is bad for democracy because it creates a predetermined outcome and guarantees a GOP House. In the current plan, only 16 of 124 districts are considered competitive — meaning either party has a chance to win. In the new plan? Just nine. Such a poorly-drawn map is a slap in the face.

Lynn Teague, a vice president with the League of Women Voters of South Carolina, offered this thought on the map being considered by the S.C. House: “The extremely low number of competitive districts — even at a generous plus/minus 5% standard — points toward making voters nearly obsolete in general elections for the S.C. House of Representatives.” Imagine that — elected officials trying to make voters obsolete. Sound like people who want to support autocratic leadership? What the S.C. House is doing should make you mad. The way to fight back is to raise Cain now and, if you don’t get what you want in December, raise more Cain at the polls next year. Let’s not allow these foxes to keep guarding their own henhouse.

Local glassware company Estelle gears up for another busy holiday season

W

By Samantha Connors

hen Summerville resident Stephanie Hall set out to create her colored glass company Estelle in 2014, she had no idea if there was a demand for this type of product. But after searching for new pieces to brighten her home, she came up empty handed and recognized a viable business opportunity. “In my head, I thought that a brand like Estelle already existed,” she said. “I assumed someone had clearly modernized these antique-style pieces and created something similar to what my grandmother collected.” Cherished memories of antiquing in her hometown of Holly Hill with grandmother Estelle, the namesake for the company, sparked a passion for colored glass. After a decade of practicing law and 16 years in the entrepreneurial space, Hall was confident that even if there wasn’t a demand for colored glass, she would create it. “It was my goal to bring about a revival of colored glass. And I was very intentional about doing that,” she said. “Colored glass is so visual, and we live in such a visual society with platforms like Instagram, I didn’t think creating a demand would be hard.” And she was right. Once people began seeing the beau-

tiful, hand-blown cake stands and glassware Hall sources from a hundred-year-old company in Poland, the products started flying off the (virtual) shelves. But it wasn’t a quick process. She spent five years designing and developing her product line before bringing it to market in 2019. “I took a lot of time to perfect each of the colors, the branding, every aspect of the business. I really delved into it, because I felt like with beautiful, high-quality products, I could build a tribe,” she explained. After just two years in business, Estelle is one of the most-recognized modern colored glass companies, boasting over 225,000 followers on Instagram and selling products in stores across the country. Though niche in nature, the products appeal to a range of demographics, appearing everywhere from home goods stores to fashion boutiques. “It’s really interesting that our products blend well with fashion, but it makes sense,” Hall said. “When I was designing these, I kind of thought of them as statement pieces that you wear — in your hand or on your table. Dressing to your drink is a thing. The glasses complement the fashion.” The pieces are also meant to dress up the dining room, part of the reason why Hall describes the collection as “jewels for your table.” With so much attention and success in the first couple years, it’s no surprise Estelle is prepping for a busy holiday season. Last year, Hall pulled

together a last-minute team to help hand-pack and ship all the boxes from the warehouse in Holly Hill. “It was very chaotic and definitely made worse by the pandemic,” she said. “Which is why I was very proactive early on this year when I heard supply chain issues could potentially get worse. I was very aggressive about getting a lot of products here early.” Though Hall and her team have had some supply chain issues with receiving their luxury boxes from another vendor, things are on track for the holiday season. “It’s definitely a challenging time, but we feel really good about this year,” she said. “We’re doing our best, and we’ve got plenty of items to sell for the holidays.” Each piece is meant to be thoughtful and treasured by the receiver, something they can always tie back to the person who gifted it, but Hall hopes the pieces will eventually become heirloom items. Though younger generations seem to have ditched the china cabinet and formal dinnerware of their parents’ and grandparents’ generations, Estelle’s collection tends to stir up a sense of nostalgia that many people want to capture and cultivate. “Our products remind people of their own grandmothers,” Hall said. “I think it links us back to the past. We may not do as much as our grandmothers did to entertain, but it’s nice to keep that memory alive. It really resonates with people.”

PURE Theatre’s artistic director Sharon Graci called opening Little Gem the culmination of long, hard work

PURE brings hidden gem Irish play to Charleston

Arts 11.24.2021

By Kevin Wilson

14

Although it is no longer new, starting Friday, PURE Theatre is presenting a fresh take on the acclaimed play, Little Gem, at its Cannon Street Arts Center. Little Gem is Irish playwright Elaine Murphy’s raucous debut piece that was first performed in the U.K. in 2008. This awardwinning saga details the many events, from the magnificent to the mundane, which unfold within a single year for three generations of women from a (fictional) North Dublin family. Loaded with both situational humor and timeless wisdom, this is just the sort of complicated tale the PURE ensemble delights in interpreting. As director Christy Landis told the City Paper, “There is no better medium to explore the complexities of human existence — our foibles, sarcasm, wit, shame, yearnings — than the medium of live theatre.” That said, Landis and company had to move fast to bring their collective vision for Little Gem to fruition. “In this instance, the show has come together relatively quickly,” she said. “Sharon Graci, our artistic director, had selected the play for inclusion in our ‘Season 19: Emergence.’ But as director, I only became attached to the project in late summer and we didn’t even start rehearsals with the actors until late October.” For any other crew, such a hurried

timeline would have been an intimidating task, but Landis insisted it was relatively easy to pull off, given the PURE ensemble’s long-established rapport, including Little Gem’s trio of lead actresses: Gibson Carter (as Amber); Camille Lowman (as Lorraine); and Lynda Harvey (as Kay). “One of the great benefits of working with our Core ensemble is that everyone fulfills their individual responsibilities with great prowess, and we’re all aware of each other’s strengths, as we have been collaborating together for so many wonderful years,” Landis said. That’s not to imply that there weren’t challenges. Since the characters are all North Dubliners and move throughout the play, there’s no single location where the story unravels. As such, the scene designer Richard Heffner was tasked with creating an environment that was visually compelling along the way, but still set up for dynamic movement. Then there was the matter of where to stage the production. For PURE’s performances of Leonard Pulkey last month, the team went in search of adequate venues that were available. Fortunately for this one, the group was able to return to its home theater on Cannon Street for the entire run of Little Gem. “As a company, we have always preferred smaller, more intimate performance spaces so that no one in the audience is too distant from the action and emotion of the plays,”

Landis said. This cozy little place is a perfect fit since, at one time or another, each character in Little Gem shares their innermost thoughts and memories with the audience. It is almost as if Murphy knew her work would one day end up here when she deftly, and intentionally, incorporated such direct addresses and asides into the dialogue. In the end, Landis and Graci couldn’t be more pleased with the homecoming. “During the pandemic, when the set of the last show that we produced before the lockdown was still standing where we left it, and the props were all still in the last place they were set before we went away, I would come and sit by myself in the seats and look at remnants of that interrupted show and wonder if we would ever come back,” Graci said. Not surprisingly, given all that the PURE ensemble has endured of late, the team’s hopes around Little Gem are high. “Opening Little Gem, in our home theatre, for a full run, is going to be amazing,” Graci said. “It is the final lap in a very long journey home. We’ve grown a lot, we’ve learned a ton, and we’ve calibrated and recalibrated our grit time and again over these last 20 months in anticipation of being here now.” PURE Theatre presents Little Gem at the Cannon St. Arts Center Nov. 26 - Dec. 18. Free Verse Press is now publishing the debut collection of poems from Linda Joy Walder, entitled, Running Naked in the Snow. Publisher Marcus Amaker, Charleston’s first poet laureate and 2021 Poet Laureate Fellow of the American Academy of Poets, said in a press release, “Free Verse Press is excited to share Linda’s wildly creative work of intimate and impactful poems expressed with heart and talent.” A graduate of Vassar College, Walder is a Charleston writer and autism activist. Running Naked in the Snow is available on Amazon and at bookstores throughout Charleston and beyond. Spoleto Festival USA announces new operas The 2022 Spoleto Festival will feature three brand new operas. Originally planned for the 2020 festival, Omar, based on the true story of Omar Ibn Said’s enslavement in the Carolinas, will headline the 2022 season. Unholy Wars is a new work conceived and performed by Grammywinning tenor Karim Sulayman about the Crusades. And esteemed opera artist Yuval Sharon will bring a new production of La bohème. “This season, Spoleto is purposefully expanding the traditional opera canon,” said Mena Mark Hanna, the new general director of Spoleto USA. “Each production, in its own way, rethinks the standard practice and repertoire of opera, questioning how it has traditionally been performed and what it can mean today.” Spoleto Festival USA runs May 27 to June 12, 2022. —MS

Get your Korean corn dog fix with Seol Ah’s By Elise DeVoe

Cuisine 11.24.2021

Josh Hill (left) and Lynn Hobart are serving up Korean corn dogs and other fusion specialties from their food truck at The Whale

Lynn Hobart and Josh Hill of the South Philly Cheesesteaks food truck have taken on a new endeavor, closely tying with Hobart’s roots — Korean corn dogs. A popular foodie trend on social media, Korean corn dogs have appeared in Charleston with Hobart and Hill’s Seol Ah’s (pronounced SOOL-AH) food truck at The Whale. Hobart and Hill put their foot in the door of the Charleston food scene three and a half years ago with South Philly Cheesesteaks. Debuting their cheesesteaks at the downtown farmer’s market, they grew from that tent to a food truck. Despite the differences between South Philly and Seol Ah’s menu, it was always Hobart’s dream of opening a Korean fusion food truck. “I was adopted when I was very little from Korea and have always been motivated to incorporate some of my background and

heritage into something that I do,” Hobart said about starting Seol Ah’s, named from her Korean name, Seol Ah Che. And although Hobart has only visited Korea once, she was still able to connect with her culture in other ways. “I did work near K[orea] Town for about three years when I lived in [New York City],” Hobart said. “That was the driving force behind how I got to learn so much [about my

A la carte Tobo Sushi now in residency at Ship’s Wheel The popular Tobo Sushi food truck can now be found parked outside the hard cider company’s tasting room, serving up fresh sushi to wash down with on-draft or specialty canned ciders. “We think that their sushi will be a good addition to Park Circle,” said Ship’s Wheel Hard Cider’s general manager Scott Jamison. “There’s really no other option like that over here.” Find Tobo Sushi during Ship’s Wheel’s operating hours of Tues.-Thurs. 5-9 p.m., Fri. 3-10 p.m., Sat. 2-10 p.m. and Sun. 1-6 p.m. —Michael Pham

Sippin’ Santa will be open daily from 11 a.m. to “late night,” on a first-come, first-serve seating. Food will be served until 11 p.m. Sun.-Thurs. and 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday. culture] and eat Korean food all the time.” After moving to Charleston, Hobart noticed a gap in the city’s food industry for Asian-fusion concepts, and decided to fill it with the Korean corn dogs. “There’s just some foods you don’t find around here,” Hobart said. “The corn dogs weren’t in the plan for the Korean concept to begin with, but the lightbulb went off in my head.” The traditional Korean corn dog is coated in a special dough, rolled in egg, coated in panko, deep fried and finally rolled in sugar for extra crunch. Another common rendition is covered in the dough, rolled in diced potatoes coated in flour, coated in panko and deep fried. Currently, Hobart serves the traditional version and plans on having the potato version as a special a few times a week. “The dough is the tricky part,” Hobart said about the cooking process. “I’ve cooked a lot of things, but I haven’t baked a lot. I had to watch YouTube videos for weeks on end to perfect that.” Using the traditional flavors as a guide, Hobart experiments with new toppings based on customers’ tastes. One of those experiments is a spicy corn dog topped with a spicy garlic chili cheese blend. Another recent experiment used Spicy Ranch Doritos as a coating — that item sold out within an hour. Seol Ah’s also has an extra-crunchy corn dog, covered in crushed ramen noodles. In addition to the signature Korean corn dogs, Seol Ah’s serves other fusion items like a Korean fried chicken sandwich and bulgogi cheesesteak. “There’s a little secret in the flour for the fried chicken that makes it very, very crispy. We also marinate the chicken and the steak for 24 hours. The combination of those two things elevates it to that next level,” Hobart said. Seol Ah’s currently has a residency at The Whale, a craft beer bar at 1640 Meeting St. Hobart met its owner at her first corndog pop up at Charles Towne Fermentory. Initially a casual conversation about The Whale’s need for a food vendor, Hobart and Hill jumped on the opportunity, purchasing a food truck two weeks later and opening SeolAh’s. Though, not without some reluctance. “I had South Philly as security,” Hobart said. “It’s just tough to open a business right now with all the inflation.” But before the truck was open, Lynn created an Instagram and Facebook page and saw an overwhelmingly positive response from the community. “I felt confident [about the concept] with the food being so unique to Charleston and just the response that I’ve gotten from people [has been inspiring],” said Hobart. “That told me that there’s a demand even more than I thought there was because you never know how things are going to turn out.”

Guitarist Brooke Garwood and violinist Emma Dooley will debut Girl Pluto work on streaming platforms in the new year

Girl Pluto going with life’s trips and turns By Chelsea Grinstead Local guitarist Brooke Garwood and violinist Emma Dooley have brought a spacey glow to the local indie roots scene as folk outfit Girl Pluto, proving themselves a softspoken, yet unforgettable addition. Having formed from a chance jam session after Garwood’s previous alt-folk group disassembled last spring, Girl Pluto’s first show at the Pour House seemed to strike a note of fortune. Fast forward to today and the duo has opened for Susto at Greenville’s Radio Room and supported tour dates for Floridabased indie folk group The 502s. The pair of songwriters are in a place creatively where they not only appreciate feedback, but want to engage each part of the song with a willingness to change it. They’ve taken this approach into the studio at Little Bird’s Mega Hot Records to record singles to release in 2022, including “Acid,” a song about an accidental LSD trip that could double as a narrative of locating joy within the path of self realization. “Emma’s violin part for ‘Acid’ before recording, it was completely different, and now I feel like it’s so amazing,” Garwood said. “I feel like if we didn’t sit down and pick apart each individual part, it wouldn’t have gotten to where it is now.” The duo just put out a video for “Acid,” filmed by Susto’s Dries Vandenberg in

Dooley’s backyard with guitarist Jay Hurtt accenting Girl Pluto’s electric guitar and violin, with Dooley’s finger plucks tempering the intro before she reverts to the classic fiddle style held throughout the song. With misty lines, “The moon looks like a balloon,” and the gentle textures added by Hurtt’s guitar effects, the tune retains a lovely lyrical humility within a composition that cascades like water. Garwood’s vocals with Dooley’s backing are a meditative harmony as they sing: “Think I’m going blind / The world around me is spinning / I am far behind / Think I’ve lost my mind / But I can’t seem to stop grinning / Is this what it’s supposed to feel like?” Even though technically the lyrics spring from a funny story of realizing you are on drugs after an acid tab disintegrated in your pocket when it rained, the words put to “Acid” are about accepting the inevitable, about feeling weird and not knowing why — which is a pretty enduring human condition these days. With Girl Pluto as Dooley’s first foray into Charleston’s music community, she has learned not just how much work a music project takes, but the relationship you make with it, especially as a two-person group.

The music world — it’s not as scary as you think. I never would have thought I would have been doing this. I was planning on going to medical school.” —Emma Dooley

“It’s kind of like a marriage,” Dooley said. “You have to learn the way each person goes about things. Learn to not take things personally. The music world — it’s not as scary as you think. I never would have thought I would have been doing this. I was planning on going to medical school. I learned I’m allowed to do other things and explore other avenues of life. There’s no rush and you can enjoy it.” It seems Garwood and Dooley know themselves pretty well and are crafting music that’s reflective of their loose grip on life’s twists and turns. “Sometimes I can really doubt myself, but in the end I think having each other is really good. I think it would be way harder if I was trying to do this alone,” Garwood said.”

Singer-songwriter Anna Crosby assembles a band for Untapped Art Festival Local singer-songwriter Anna Crosby is gearing up for her show at Untapped Art Festival, which will be her first time performing her original music with a full band accompanying her. There will also be performances by garage soul duo The Mobros and folk duo Dark & Bitter. Organized by local artists Chad Dyar and Julie Glass of Charleston Artist Guild, Untapped Art Festival will be held outdoors from 12 to 6 p.m, Dec. 4., at Tradesman Brewing Co. Attendees can enjoy art of all types, including paintings, mixed media, photography, pottery, jewelry and sculpture from more than 25 artists. The event is free to attend. —CG

Catch Legacy vocal trio at Forte Jazz Lounge Nov. 27

For the past two and half years, local singer Charles Grant has been performing with vocalists Leroy Stewart and Bill Durant in Legacy trio, but on Nov. 27 Grant will be joined by Anthony McKnight and Raymond Rhett of The Black Velvets to deliver renditions of The Temptations, Smokey Robinson and Stylistics for shows at 7 and 9:30 p.m. —CG

Michael Desmond, aka synth pop artist Local Nomad, moved here six months ago from New York City, having made his way through the pandemic with a self-titled EP reminiscent of indie elaborations from Group Love or Young the Giant. This year he’s had a steady stream of singles, including his most recent collaboration, “Lonely,” with pop trio, The Shadowboxers. Desmond has been in the game for a while, gaining traction as guitarist/ vocalist in rock group Gabriel the Marine that opened for acts like Taking Back Sunday and Jack’s Mannequin in the early 2010s before launching Local Nomad two years ago. —Chelsea Grinstead

Under the Streetlamp’s Brandon Wardell is ready to visit home Under The Streetlamp isn’t a doo-wop quartet as much as they are a human jukebox. A typical set from the Broadwayhoned sharp-dressed group includes everything from Bob Seger to Frankie Valli to Motown and beyond, taking in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s with equal ease. So it makes sense that the group’s holidaythemed show, Hip to the Holidays, has everything from the expected classics like “White Christmas,” “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” and “Run, Run Rudolph” to lesscanonical tunes like Joni Mitchell’s “River,” all delivered with style and polish. “There are a lot of really fun rock and roll hits out there that are holiday-based,” said Under The Streetlamp’s Brandon Wardell. “So we have the pleasure of going through that catalog and finding a lot of cool songs that a lot of people know and some that people don’t know. We really get to explore the catalog and come up with some unexpected things that we could make fit our genre.” But for Wardell, a Tony-winning singer, actor and producer, the group’s upcoming performance at the Gaillard Center isn’t just about spreading some holiday cheer. It’s about coming back to the town that he called home for many years, and the place where he began his career as a performer. “It’s where I got my start,” he said. “Charleston’s where I was really given my very first opportunity to be a part of something close to this.” Back in 2010, Wardell played Freddie Mercury in Sheri Grace’s production of Rock ‘n’ Roll Heaven as part of Piccolo Spoleto. Wardell lives in Sarasota, Florida, now, and when he’s not producing, he’s touring with Under the Streetlamp or appearing in productions like Good Vibrations: The Beach Boys Musical or Catch Me If You

Five-time Tony Award-winning producer Brandon Wardell will perform a holiday show as part of the Under the Streetlamp quartet Can. But he says he still misses his days in Charleston. “Every time I come back, I have been able to reflect on my time there and the value of growing through that community,” he said. “There’s a wonderful arts community in Charleston. Amazing food, of course, but an amazing entertainment scene, and I was really blessed to have the opportunity to get into professional theater there. It’s been a home to me over the years, and every time I come back, it just gives me a chance to add to the memories.” —Vincent Harris Under the Streetlamp: Hip to the Holidays is Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Charleston Gaillard Center. gaillarcenter.com.
