Restaurants, movies top SC Google searches for 2021 Google released last week its 21st-annual Year in Search — a collection of hundreds of lists with top searches from around the world, revealing patterns of topics that appealed to regional audiences in 2021. Unsurprisingly, many COVID-19 related topics were at the top of the list for trending searches in South Carolina and Charleston including: “COVID vaccine near me” and “COVID testing site near me.” But as vaccines became more widely available early in 2021, people wanted to return to fun social activities, as reflected in Google’s lists. In Charleston, other top searches included: Restaurants near me, fast food near me, pizza near me, liquor store near me, seafood near me, breakfast near me and seafood restaurants near me. Basically, the main things on Charlestonians’ minds this year were COVID, restaurants and alcohol. Sounds about right. —Samantha Connors

By Herb Frazier An enslaved man named James Matthews hid in Four Holes Swamp on his way to Charleston in 1838, where he gained passage on a ship that took him to freedom in Boston. Another enslaved man, Team, sometimes lived with maroon communities throughout Four Holes Swamp, a vast ecosystem of virgin cypress and tupelo trees, making it an ideal hideaway for freedom-seekers more than two centuries ago. These and other accounts of enslaved people who found temporary freedom in the swamp from chattel slavery helped The Audubon Center at Francis Beidler Forest secure a designation on the National Park Service’s Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. The Underground Railroad refers to efforts used to escape bondage, assisted or unassisted, from settled communities and They think they later across state and international borders. ‘We felt called to respond’ More than 100 Afghan refugees expected locally by early 2022 At least 100 adults and children fleeing regime change in Afghanistan are expected to settle in the Charleston area in the next six weeks. North Carolina-based Lutheran Services Carolinas will spend the next month or so preparing for the arrival of the Afghans and their families — and there are ways locals can help. Speaking at Transformation Table’s Afghan pop-up dinner at Park & Grove last week, Bedrija Jazic, Lutheran Services director for refugee services, said it is in the process of lining up

housing and employment opportunities for the Charleston newcomers. The fundraiser Monday raised nearly $8,000 for the group’s refugee efforts, according to a follow-up email sent to attendees. Jazic said no more than 25 individual or family units — including parents, children and extended family — are expected in the Charleston area by mid-January. Lutheran Services already hosted refugees in Columbia and Raleigh and was looking to expand in S.C., but the added need with the Afghanistan airlift sped up

that process. “We felt called to respond to that crisis,” Jazic told the City Paper. “Most of the people that we had seen so far in our Columbia program, are the people who, in some way, had served with the U.S. military, and they have what we call ‘U.S. ties in the area,’ ” Jazic said. Charleston libraries extending hours at 10 branches

Several Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) branches will expand evening and weekday operating hours beginning Jan. 3 in efforts to provide better access and more flexibility for patrons needing to visit the library after work or school. The following branches will operate from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday:

Baxter-Patrick, Bees Ferry, Cynthia Graham Hurd/St. Andrews, John’s Island, Main Library, Otranto Road, St. Paul’s, Wando, Mount Pleasant. The Mount Pleasant and Dorchester Road libraries remain temporarily closed for renovations and will follow the above operating schedule once they reopen.

In addition, the McClellanville and Edisto Island libraries will now be open from 2-6 p.m. on Wednesdays. Hours at other CCPL branches will remain unchanged. The Village Library will continue to operate with curbside services only. A full list of operating hours and updates can be found online. —Skyler Baldwin

Charleston City Council heard comments from local business owners, residents and city leaders on Dec. 8 about a proposed Business Improvement District (BID) slated to impact King Street from Broad to Line streets, with room for expansion in either direction, in partnership with the Charleston Downtown Alliance. The district seeks to improve the on-street experience for pedestrians and business owners, with impacts ranging from beautification to adding services for tourists and residents. Those who own businesses in the BID would have more say in how to use funds specifically. The proposed area includes 545 distinct parcels, just over 75 acres of land. It isn’t a new concept, according to Robert Summerfield, the director of planning, preservation and sustainability for the City of Charleston. It was first discussed as a part of a 1977 revitalization plan, brought up again in the 1999 Downtown Plan, expanded upon in Century V Plan in 2011 and 2016. More recently, the city’s adopted comprehensive plan calls for adopting the proposed improvement district. “As goes King Street, so goes Charleston in terms of our economy,” said Councilman Mike Seekings. “For those who have undertaken during the toughest time King Street has seen to get this initiative going, good for you.” The project is expected to cost around $11 million over a 10-year period. Parcels in the affected area would be billed no more than $0.0113 per dollar of assessed value, as opposed to market value, annually over that period to offset costs. This includes some upper-floor residences above streetfront business. Other sources of income include fundraising efforts, and provided funds from The Charleston Downtown Alliance, a nonprofit made up of King Street business owners. —Skyler Baldwin

signage, exhibits and continued programming, like our past Cultural Heritage Days. “But it may grow to things beyond that, too,” Johnson said. “We also envision the Underground Railroad designation as an opportunity to engage more meaningfully with the local community and new partners.” This is not the first maroon story told in the Lowcountry. The SummervilleDorchester Museum in 2015 erected a permanent maroon display in its historic garden house. The display presents the maroon communities in Four Holes Swamp and the wetlands at Beech Hill near Legend Oaks Golf Course on S.C. Highway 61. The exhibit is still on display at the museum at 100 E. Doty Ave. Ed West, the museum’s volunteer historian, said, “The Lowcountry was hundreds of miles from where the Underground Railroad actually operated, and it was very unfriendly country, so a runaway couldn’t go anywhere. So runaways here ran away to the swamp, and they just lived there.” At Beidler, a nearly 2-mile boardwalk loops through a portion of the world’s largest virgin swamp forest with trees likely touched by freedom-seekers. Emily Davis, Beidler’s center manager, said, “This is what makes Beidler so special. It is untouched yet touched.” Beidler receives 10,000 visitors annually, many of them birdwatchers who come to see the more than 180 species of birds that have been documented in the sanctuary. The spring is the bird-watching highpoint when hundreds of yellow prothonotary warblers migrate from South America to build low-level nests, even in cypress knees. Just as maroons might have been surprised to see a massive warbler invasion, birdwatchers today are just as surprised to discover the maroon story displayed on the boardwalk’s temporary signs. “They think they are coming here to hike or do some bird-watching, and then there is the historical aspect that a lot of people don’t know about,” Davis said. This history on slavery, so far, has not shocked Beidler’s visitors, she said. “I’ve only had people come in and ask more questions,” she added. The history lesson, she explained, adds meaning to Beidler’s peaceful and reflective experience. “It has always been a unique place, but now we have this other piece. You can meditate on these people who were here, meditate on their stories and the stories we may never know.” The forest provided food, water, natural medicines and materials to build shelter. Remnants of the maroons have long since been washed away by water that flows through the swamp and into the Edisto River. Dwarf palmettos on the high ground shielded maroons in the mysterious swamp, an undesirable place to look for enslaved people, Davis explained.

Republicans spanked over attempted vaccine mandate ban S

tate Republicans last week put on an hours-long song and dance routine against business vaccine mandates on the floor of the state House of Representatives. But about four hours and 30 minutes in, realizing their screwy political maneuver was set to fail, they abruptly called the whole thing off. A bill filed a year before it suddenly was put on a Dec. 9 House committee docket would have prohibited political subdivisions from accepting federal funds to enforce federal vaccine mandates to slow the spread of COVID-19. But House Majority Leader Gary Simrill, R-York, apparently thought the bill was a suitable blank canvas to rewrite it to prohibit private businesses from requiring employees to be vaccinated against the virus. The rewritten proposal got a hasty thumbs up from Republicans on the House Ways and Means committee and attracted a few more sponsors clamoring to stick it to President Joe Biden. Then it went straight to the House floor, where lawmakers who were back in Columbia to consider limited legislation to close out the year, but were instead thrust into protracted debate over the bill. For hours, sensible members of the House from both parties stood in front of colleagues preaching how misguided the effort was. There were even concerns about whether the original bill fiddled with the state’s business-friendly “at-will” employment status. But they weren’t the only ones in the ears of the robotic Republicans. In the end, with the writing on the wall, Republican lawmakers pulled a switcheroo, swapping out the entire text of the bill yet again. The “new” new version, a sorry skeleton of a proposal, called for some vaccine exemptions to be acknowledged and let businesses require testing in lieu of vaccination if the businesses receive federal funds. Yes, the bill passed, but it likely won’t make it through the Senate in its current form when senators return in January. The fact is that this

was a bad idea from the start. And the GOP power-brokers knew it. The day before they met in committee, more than two dozen business groups in a statement told lawmakers that S.C. entrepreneurs had no interest in supporting a bill that would tie their hands to protect their workers and their customers, calling the proposal an “unprecedented step against the internal operations of our state’s job creators.”

“The ability for businesses to operate without government overreach has, and will continue to be, a key building block of our state’s booming economy.” “South Carolina has a long-held tradition of being a probusiness state that allows businesses to operate with minimal government intervention,” according to the letter. “Employment decisions have been left to individual businesses in our state, subject to what each business believes is right for their operations. The ability for businesses to operate without government overreach has, and will continue to be, a key building block of our state’s booming economy.” COVID-19 is not over. S.C. officials reported more than 1,400 cases over the weekend and almost half of state residents are not fully vaccinated. But we do have the tools to fight it, and the employer vaccine mandate is one of those tools. Allowing employers to require vaccines even provides a shred of worker protection, letting them find a safer job — possibly with a vaccine mandate — if bosses are careless with worker health. The House debate over the anti-mandate mandate was a wrongheaded, shameful waste of time — exactly what we’ve grown to expect from the Republican-led S.C. legislature.

Alan Price’s debut album comes after stints in platinum-selling bands

Alan Price is aware that his debut album, Goodlow, is all over the musical map. He knows that the thudding hard-rock groove of the opening, “Powerlines,” sounds completely different from the synth pop of “Long Day,” which in turn sounds nothing like the sunny guitar pop of “Think Fast.” In fact, it could be argued that other than Price’s smooth vocals, each song on Goodlow sounds like you’ve just switched the dial to a new radio station, right up until the closing track, “Upside,” which brings a countrymusic-style pedal steel into the equation. Lyrically, Price takes on a variety of subjects. “Man Up on the Rooftop” deals with suicide, but “John Wayne” is a whimsical ditty based on a dream Price had. “Upside” is about looking at the positives in life, while “My Heart” deals with a failed relationship. Goodlow covers a lot of bases, in other words. “When I went into it, I said I don’t really want any parameters on what I’m going to do,” Price said. “I’m not going in to write a rock album, I’m not going in to write a synth-pop album, and I’m not going in to write a country album. But I’ll be damned if there isn’t some of all of that stuff involved in it.” Price is actually proud of the kaleidoscopic musical landscape because it allowed him to express himself fully as an artist. “When I look at that album, it’s almost

like musical splatter paint — I exploded in a room and it was all the colors that were my favorite things in music — the album is representative of a lot of the things that I love about everything musical,” he said. “I’m excited to hear people be confused by all of the different sounds that are on my album.” Price has sung and played guitar since he was a child, but up until a few years ago, the Charleston native was more comfortable as a sideman than standing in the spotlight. “In my 20s and 30s, I played in a bunch of rock bands locally and regionally and had the opportunity about 10-12 years ago to start working with some bigger bands,” Price said. “I toured with the band Shinedown, which is a multi-platinum band from Atlantic Records that’s been very successful. Then I linked up with some other guys from a band called Sevendust and they’d started a new band called Call Me No One, and I did a national tour with them, and that was a great experience.” Once he moved back to Charleston and started a family, Price started looking at his own career. “I wanted to plant my roots in Charleston because I grew up here,” he said. “So about seven or eight years ago I started going out and playing bar gigs just to maintain a living. I wanted to continue playing as much as possible, and I played hundreds of bar gigs every year and suddenly got thrown into not having a band anymore. I’ve always been a contributing member to other things, and it felt great helping other people and helping the bigger picture, and now, it’s like I’m doing my own thing and I’m really discovering a

sound that I love.” That discovery eventually led to Goodlow, which was recorded in Charleston and Nashville with some of Price’s musicbiz connections, including Billy Idol’s drummer, Erik Eldenius. Price says that despite the varying topics and sounds, there’s a cohesive message he’s trying to get across on the album’s 13 tracks. “If you ever come to see me perform, one thing I’m known for is these little heart stickers that I pass out,” he said. “They’re free everywhere I play, whether I’m selling merchandise or just playing outside. And it really does signify that the core message is one of love and positivity. Life is all about trying to find balance, and love is the thing that can balance all of the dark and the light out to help you find your way through everything. Love and heart and positivity all around is the message I’m trying to cast; it’s really about finding the silver lining.”

Niecy Blues drops new cerebral tune Local musician Niecy Blues’ latest single, “Bones Become the Trees,” is a pleasant departure from rhythm and blues. The yawning synths and foggy vocals enmesh the airy, ambient track with an ethereal vibe, bringing your mind into a peaceful space. Recently returned from a West Coast tour with alternative artist Puma Blue, Niecy is working on a debut full-length record. Catch music every week at Fatty’s Beer Works What started out as jam sessions at Fatty’s Beer Works between a group of local musicians turned into consistent gatherings on Monday nights that owner, brewer and musician David “Fatty” McLain affectionately calls Monday night superjams. Local soul singer and saxophonist Bill Wilson has been playing at Fatty’s since around 2016, and has secured himself a spot Dec. 16, 23 and 30.
