Swamp used by freedom-seekers recognized on Underground Railroad list

Restaurants, movies top SC Google searches for 2021 Google released last week its 21st-annual Year in Search — a collection of hundreds of lists with top searches from around the world, revealing patterns of topics that appealed to regional audiences in 2021. Unsurprisingly, many COVID-19 related topics were at the top of the list for trending searches in South Carolina and Charleston including: “COVID vaccine near me” and “COVID testing site near me.” But as vaccines became more widely available early in 2021, people wanted to return to fun social activities, as reflected in Google’s lists. In Charleston, other top searches included: Restaurants near me, fast food near me, pizza near me, liquor store near me, seafood near me, breakfast near me and seafood restaurants near me. Basically, the main things on Charlestonians’ minds this year were COVID, restaurants and alcohol. Sounds about right. —Samantha Connors

By Herb Frazier An enslaved man named James Matthews hid in Four Holes Swamp on his way to Charleston in 1838, where he gained passage on a ship that took him to freedom in Boston. Another enslaved man, Team, sometimes lived with maroon communities throughout Four Holes Swamp, a vast ecosystem of virgin cypress and tupelo trees, making it an ideal hideaway for freedom-seekers more than two centuries ago. These and other accounts of enslaved people who found temporary freedom in the swamp from chattel slavery helped The Audubon Center at Francis Beidler Forest secure a designation on the National Park Service’s Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. The Underground Railroad refers to efforts used to escape bondage, assisted or unassisted, from settled communities and They think they later across state and international borders. A portion of it has remained untouched with 1,000-year-old cypress and tupelo trees that provided cover for maroons, a term likely derived from the Spanish word “cimarrón” for wild or untamed. In the coming year, Beidler will work with local residents to develop a plan to interpret the maroon story. “We traditionally have focused on natural history,” Johnson

Business owners weigh in on improvement district

‘We felt called to respond’ More than 100 Afghan refugees expected locally by early 2022 At least 100 adults and children fleeing regime change in Afghanistan are expected to settle in the Charleston area in the next six weeks. North Carolina-based Lutheran Services Carolinas will spend the next month or so preparing for the arrival of the Afghans and their families — and there are ways locals can help. Speaking at Transformation Table’s Afghan pop-up dinner at Park & Grove last week, Bedrija Jazic, Lutheran Services director for refugee services, said it is in the process of lining up

housing and employment opportunities for the Charleston newcomers. The fundraiser Monday raised nearly $8,000 for the group’s refugee efforts, according to a follow-up email sent to attendees. Jazic said no more than 25 individual or family units — including parents, children and extended family — are expected in the Charleston area by mid-January. Lutheran Services already hosted refugees in Columbia and Raleigh and was looking to expand in S.C., but the added need with the Afghanistan airlift sped up

that process. “We felt called to respond to that crisis,” Jazic told the City Paper. “Most of the people that we had seen so far in our Columbia program, are the people who, in some way, had served with the U.S. military, and they have what we call ‘U.S. ties in the area,’ ” Jazic said. Potential employers, anyone with connections to housing and volunteers can learn more about Lutheran Services at lscarolinas.net. Donations collected can be marked directly for the group’s local housing assistance fund. —Sam Spence

Charleston City Council heard comments from local business owners, residents and city leaders on Dec. 8 about a proposed Business Improvement District (BID) slated to impact King Street from Broad to Line streets, with room for expansion in either direction, in partnership with the Charleston Downtown Alliance. The district seeks to improve the on-street experience for pedestrians and business owners, with impacts ranging from beautification to adding services for tourists and residents. Those who own businesses in the BID would have more say in how to use funds specifically. The proposed area includes 545 distinct parcels, just over 75 acres of land. It isn’t a new concept, according to Robert Summerfield, the director of planning, preservation and sustainability for the City of Charleston. It was first discussed as a part of a 1977 revitalization plan, brought up again in the 1999 Downtown Plan, expanded upon in Century V Plan in 2011 and 2016. More recently, the city’s adopted comprehensive plan calls for adopting the proposed improvement district. “As goes King Street, so goes Charleston in terms of our economy,” said Councilman Mike Seekings. “For those who have undertaken during the toughest time King Street has seen to get this initiative going, good for you.” The project is expected to cost around $11 million over a 10-year period. Parcels in the affected area would be billed no more than $0.0113 per dollar of assessed value, as opposed to market value, annually over that period to offset costs. This includes some upper-floor residences above streetfront business. Other sources of income include fundraising efforts, and provided funds from The Charleston Downtown Alliance, a nonprofit made up of King Street business owners. —Skyler Baldwin

signage, exhibits and continued programming, like our past Cultural Heritage Days. “But it may grow to things beyond that, too,” Johnson said. “We also envision the Underground Railroad designation as an opportunity to engage more meaningfully with the local community and new partners.” This is not the first maroon story told in the Lowcountry. The SummervilleDorchester Museum in 2015 erected a permanent maroon display in its historic garden house. The display presents the maroon communities in Four Holes Swamp and the wetlands at Beech Hill near Legend Oaks Golf Course on S.C. Highway 61. The exhibit is still on display at the museum at 100 E. Doty Ave. Ed West, the museum’s volunteer historian, said, “The Lowcountry was hundreds of miles from where the Underground Railroad actually operated, and it was very unfriendly country, so a runaway couldn’t go anywhere. So runaways here ran away to the swamp, and they just lived there.” At Beidler, a nearly 2-mile boardwalk loops through a portion of the world’s largest virgin swamp forest with trees likely touched by freedom-seekers. Emily Davis, Beidler’s center manager, said, “This is what makes Beidler so special. It is untouched yet touched.” Beidler receives 10,000 visitors annually, many of them birdwatchers who come to see the more than 180 species of birds that have been documented in the sanctuary. The spring is the bird-watching highpoint when hundreds of yellow prothonotary warblers migrate from South America to build low-level nests, even in cypress knees. Just as maroons might have been surprised to see a massive warbler invasion, birdwatchers today are just as surprised to discover the maroon story displayed on the boardwalk’s temporary signs. “They think they are coming here to hike or do some bird-watching, and then there is the historical aspect that a lot of people don’t know about,” Davis said. This history on slavery, so far, has not shocked Beidler’s visitors, she said. “I’ve only had people come in and ask more questions,” she added. The history lesson, she explained, adds meaning to Beidler’s peaceful and reflective experience. “It has always been a unique place, but now we have this other piece. You can meditate on these people who were here, meditate on their stories and the stories we may never know.” The forest provided food, water, natural medicines and materials to build shelter. Remnants of the maroons have long since been washed away by water that flows through the swamp and into the Edisto River. Dwarf palmettos on the high ground shielded maroons in the mysterious swamp, an undesirable place to look for enslaved people, Davis explained.

Republicans spanked over attempted vaccine mandate ban S

Views 12.15.2021

tate Republicans last week put on an hours-long song and dance routine against business vaccine mandates on the floor of the state House of Representatives. But about four hours and 30 minutes in, realizing their screwy political maneuver was set to fail, they abruptly called the whole thing off. A bill filed a year before it suddenly was put on a Dec. 9 House committee docket would have prohibited political subdivisions from accepting federal funds to enforce federal vaccine mandates to slow the spread of COVID-19. But House Majority Leader Gary Simrill, R-York, apparently thought the bill was a suitable blank canvas to rewrite it to prohibit private businesses from requiring employees to be vaccinated against the virus. The rewritten proposal got a hasty thumbs up from Republicans on the House Ways and Means committee and attracted a few more sponsors clamoring to stick it to President Joe Biden. Then it went straight to the House floor, where lawmakers who were back in Columbia to consider limited legislation to close out the year, but were instead thrust into protracted debate over the bill. For hours, sensible members of the House from both parties stood in front of colleagues preaching how misguided the effort was. There were even concerns about whether the original bill fiddled with the state’s business-friendly “at-will” employment status. But they weren’t the only ones in the ears of the robotic Republicans. In the end, with the writing on the wall, Republican lawmakers pulled a switcheroo, swapping out the entire text of the bill yet again. The “new” new version, a sorry skeleton of a proposal, called for some vaccine exemptions to be acknowledged and let businesses require testing in lieu of vaccination if the businesses receive federal funds. Yes, the bill passed, but it likely won’t make it through the Senate in its current form when senators return in January. The fact is that this

8

was a bad idea from the start. And the GOP power-brokers knew it. The day before they met in committee, more than two dozen business groups in a statement told lawmakers that S.C. entrepreneurs had no interest in supporting a bill that would tie their hands to protect their workers and their customers, calling the proposal an “unprecedented step against the internal operations of our state’s job creators.”

“The ability for businesses to operate without government overreach has, and will continue to be, a key building block of our state’s booming economy.” “South Carolina has a long-held tradition of being a probusiness state that allows businesses to operate with minimal government intervention,” according to the letter. “Employment decisions have been left to individual businesses in our state, subject to what each business believes is right for their operations. The ability for businesses to operate without government overreach has, and will continue to be, a key building block of our state’s booming economy.” COVID-19 is not over. S.C. officials reported more than 1,400 cases over the weekend and almost half of state residents are not fully vaccinated. But we do have the tools to fight it, and the employer vaccine mandate is one of those tools. Allowing employers to require vaccines even provides a shred of worker protection, letting them find a safer job — possibly with a vaccine mandate — if bosses are careless with worker health. The House debate over the anti-mandate mandate was a wrongheaded, shameful waste of time — exactly what we’ve grown to expect from the Republican-led S.C. legislature.

Haley’s new book is craven plea for political relevance By Andy Brack Former S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley offers a craven mush of platitudes in a new policy book that is little more than a painful cry for political relevance.

As former President Donald Trump’s enabler in the United Nations where she served as U.S. ambassador, Haley brings together 16 essays on domestic and foreign policy in American Strength: Conservative Solutions Worth Fighting For. The free, 160-page book from her Stand for America advocacy group features short essays from conservative luminaries such as U.S. Sens. Tim Scott of South Carolina, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania and Dan Sullivan of Alaska, as well as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Gen. H.R. McMaster. But it’s four pages of Haley’s introduction to the nine essays on domestic policy that are chilling and filled with stolid, cliched word play that offers a narrow, unsettling view of America. She repeats something that Trump supporters want to hear, but is blind to reality: “America is not a racist country,” she wrote. Governor, you grew up in Bamberg County. By not accepting the inequities of the past and dealing with them in a positive way, we continue two Americas — one of privilege and another rooted in the plantation culture. LOCAL FOCUS Charleston inspires, cultivates local filmmaking By Sydney Bollinger

Feature 12.15.2021

T

he Lowcountry’s charm and beauty has been documented in films like The Notebook and Forrest Gump, but in recent years, production companies have chosen Charleston as the backdrop for new, high-profile TV and film projects. Both Netflix’s Outer Banks and HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones have filmed in Charleston. Along with the success of Bravo’s Southern Charm and Halloween installments, the Charleston area has seen a recent uptick in interest from producers looking for picture-perfect backdrops and good quality of life. As the local film industry grows, more filmmakers, crew members, and other creatives are moving to the area, interested in seeking new opportunities for film and production. Many large productions that come to Charleston rely on local producers and filmmakers to navigate the city. H. Timothy Grady, owner of Ebb & Flow Pictures, often gets called in to help out-of-town filmmakers headed to the Holy City. “My job is logistics and coordinating — making sure everybody’s on the same pa ge, and getting permits from the city, the towns and all the different municipalities,” Grady told the City Paper. “Luckily, not much goes wrong in film production if you pay attention and hire the right people,” he said. “I love my job. I love the fact that people come to me with an idea and I get to provide them with, hopefully, the perfect place.” Charleston-based shows, including “reality” shows like Southern Charm and scripted comedies like Gemstones, showcase the city and help bring new productions to the area. Some filmmakers bring their own crews from L.A. or New York, but others, like The Righteous Gemstones, hire local crew and technicians, according to Grady. Productions that focus on hiring Charleston professionals often provide a local avenue for aspiring filmmakers to get started, rather than moving to Atlanta or other Southeast film hubs. “It’s a perfect place for beginning filmmakers … [It’s] a lot easier to get connections and really work through the ranks and be able to ask more questions and not just be another one of a million,” said Drew Glickman, a former Charlestonian

who has worked on projects for National Geographic and Netflix’s Explained. “The nice thing about the Charleston community is that there is so much up-andcoming industry that I was able to work my way up … As in: making a name for myself,” he said. Student filmmakers also have many opportunities to get involved in the local industry. Both College of Charleston and Trident Technical College offer film-related programs. CofC’s film studies students and Film Club members host the annual Student Film Festival every spring. Having begun in 2006, it is one of the longest-running film festivals in Charleston. Trident’s film production program assists students with getting positions on productions and making connections with industry professionals to further their careers as film technicians and producers. Rebecca Pryce, film department coordinator at Trident Tech, said just looking around a local set is a testament to the strength of the school's program. “I think the success of our program can be found on the back of a call sheet, where members of a film’s crew are listed," she said. "You can find so many who started

with us, and over the years, a strong local network of alumni has formed.” Trident alumni have gone on to produce for major clients, including Zappos and CNN, she said. Some students choose to work on major productions while also furthering their own independent projects. Charleston may not be a traditional film hub, but Pryce said there is “tremendous upside to a smaller market.” “From my perspective, there is a strong community here that looks after their own,” she said. Pryce The local filmmaking community and Charleston’s history also fosters storytelling based on the city’s history. Travis Pearson, whose 2015 film, America Street, screened at a satellite event for 2021’s Sundance Film Festival, gains much of his inspiration from the Charleston area, its history and his own background. “I learn so much being here — a lot about my culture with the Gullah Geechee

community,” Pearson said. “As an AfricanAmerican filmmaker, a lot of stories here haven’t been told. I’m trying my best to be the storyteller — the visual storyteller.” Pearson’s focus on telling local stories through film has its roots in history. “Many of the older generations will approach [me] once they hear I’m a filmmaker and want to share their stories —want me to tell it. It’s the connection to the past.” Pearson is currently working on his second feature-length film, The Rose Boys, a coming-of-age story about two boys who sell palmetto roses downtown. The project will move to production in 2022. Pearson admits that Charleston wasn’t always a good place to start as a filmmaker. “You had to go where the money was,” he said. “But that’s slowly but surely changing, because the equipment is becoming more accessible.” The Lowcountry is home to several independent filmmakers who rely on affordable equipment and software and release their projects online through Vimeo, YouTube or streaming services, such as Tubi, which is owned by Fox. Felicia Rivers, founder of Geechee One Productions, shoots many of her films locally using local actors to “showcase the city and the world we live in.” Her first full-length film, Suga Babies, had its Tubi debut on Nov. 1. She also has upcoming projects, including a drama, which will address police brutality toward the Black community. Rivers said she expects the industry to grow even more in the next decade. “More people are coming here,” she said. “If I do better and [hire] one more person and you do better and [hire] one more person, then even more people will come [to Charleston] and invest their time and money here.” According to Grady, local governments could make the permitting process easier for filmmakers looking to use local venues and locations, which would promote even more growth to the industry. He also hopes to improve relations between Charlestonians and film producers. “People that are from South Carolina are the nicest people you’ll ever meet, but they’ve also been taken advantage of,” said Grady. So remember, he said, when

crews show up, the good ones will check all the boxes. “We might ask to come shoot on your property. We plan to pay you a fair fee, and we have insurance … We’re going to get permits from the city, and we’re going to make sure everybody parks properly and we’re not going to upset your neighbors.” Relationships between South Carolinians and film producers may continue to grow, especially as Carolina Film Alliance (CFA) looks to expand the state's film industry. The group is gearing up for the next state legislative session, which begins in January. The session comes just as the S.C. Film Commission announced the departure of state Film Commissioner Tom Clark, who will be succeeded by Matt Storm, who has worked with the S.C. Film Commission since 2019. In the next year, CFA hopes to develop the S.C. film production workforce with funding from the Department of Employment and Workforce (DEW), according to a November legislative update. The group also plans to continue advocating for wage and supplier rebate funds. South Carolina currently offers $16 million in film incentives per year, while North

Carolina offers $31 million and Georgia has an uncapped tax incentive. In September, the S.C. Film Commission was offered an additional $15 million to bring new productions to the state. In addition to the Film Alliance offering some assistance for productions, Indie Grants also awards up to $35,000 for short films produced by South Carolina filmmakers. Those incentives help companies that come to S.C. and hire Trident students to work on crews, help get filmmakers opportunities with major film festivals and expand the experience of the local film industry. There’s always hope for more in the future, but for now, Grady says, “The good thing is the film business is alive and well.”

Ghost Note also played at the Sin City Horror Fest as well as the Houston Horror Film Fest. His previous short film Lake Moultrie Massacre is currently streaming on Amazon Prime. While directing is his favorite part of the filmmaking process, with writing coming in at a very close second, Whaley said he didn’t start out in the local film community with directing exclusively in mind. “I think I directed by default at first. I actually started behind the camera on some small unseen shorts. Then people kept asking me to act in things. Had never even considered it. But I decided to take it seriously and took some classes.” Whaley, a fixture in the local film community for over a decade, has noticed the changes. “It has definitely grown. And I think for the better. We have a ton of talented folks here. The only thing I think should change is that there still seems to be cliques of people and not everyone works with each other. I kind of wish there was more local collaboration. Maybe even more local events to bring filmmakers together.”

Charleston’s professional ballet company, Palmetto City Ballet, will bring back The Snow Queen this weekend, just in time for holiday celebrations. The fairy tale follows young Gerda on her journey to rescue her true love Kai from the eponymous Snow Queen’s ice palace. The story is the basis for the Disney megahit, Frozen. This production is choreographed by company artistic director Jonathan Tabbert. The cast is made up of Palmetto City’s professional artists, as well as over 60 young dancers from around the Charleston community. Performances are at 7 p.m., Dec. 18, and at 3 p.m., Dec. 19, at Sottile Theater. Visit palmettocityballet.org for tickets. —Michael Smallwood

New York transplants Matt Conway and fiance Carissa Hernandez have transformed a beloved downtown bubble tea house at Spring and Coming streets into the Tippling House, a neighborhood wine bar tucked into a single house. During the early pandemic, Conway and Hernandez traveled to Charleston to “escape [their] small apartment and bad weather” — Conway’s sister lives in the area, working with Butcher & Bee. What was planned to be a short stay, however, turned into a permanent relocation, as the couple made the tough decision to “sever ties” with the Empire State. “It was certainly not an easy decision,” Conway said. “But we decided to stay here in sunny Charleston and make this our new home.” Shortly after moving, Hernandez was hired to run events with Leon’s Oyster Shop downtown, while Conway had to briefly head back north to fulfill obligations with New York restaurants. Returning to Charleston in March 2021, he was ready to move forward. He wasn’t quite sure what to do, but knew he needed to do something. “Fishing and walking the dogs wasn’t a suitable profession for Carissa,” he said. With his extensive background in hospitality as a sommelier, he knew that was the

way to go. And Conway didn’t have to wait long for an opportunity to come up, either. Things rolled quickly for the couple. Sharing some wine with chef James London and Yoanna Tang the night before the couple reopened Chubby Fish on Bogard Street, Conway mentioned he was looking for a space — or at the very least something to do. Tang suggested taking over the old Tapio space at 221 Coming St. “I don’t even know what that is,” he said. The building never had a “for lease” sign on the window, according to Conway, but he was able to secure a walkthrough in April. “It’s not pretty, but I really like the bones of the place. It’s just going to take a lot of work,” Conway said during a walkthrough. The owner, having done their research, entrusted the house to Conway, handing him the keys and giving him the space to do what needed to be done. From April to June, Conway and Hernandez had experts visit to “look at problems that could present themselves,” and to “get a feel for what [they] wanted to do with the place and what it would feel like.” The couple decided to emphasize the building’s residential roots to create a “homey little wine bar.” It was, after all, a house from the 19th century. The following month, the couple took CONTINUED ON PAGE 18

a brief trip to Rhône Valley in France — where Conway initially found his love of wine — and in August, signed the lease. Eleven weeks later in October, Conway and Hernandez opened the Tippling House, a fitting name for the spot. “We were looking for something unique and something that fit the house and the market,” said Conway. “Wine bars aren’t unique in this country, so having originality was really important to us.” The name, according to Conway, has ties to both British and Charleston culture. A “tippling house,” in British culture, was a place where “men go to drink too much,” and because of the British influence in Charleston, those establishments had a place here, too. The name was simple, direct and a literal definition of what it has to offer — a house where you can go and grab a drink. At the Tippling House, there are two main wine menus — a daily, alwayschanging list with, affordable wines that can be purchased in full- or half-bottle prices; and Matthew’s Stash — a selection of rare, properly aged wines available only upon request. And what’s a good wine without a bite to eat? The Tippling House has a small snack menu, curated by chef Alex Yellan, another New York transplant and local kitchen veteran. The snack menu was designed to provide wine-friendly snacks that aren’t too filling. “We’re not looking to be a full-service restaurant or serious about dinner,” Conway added. “We’re trying to be a wine bar with tasty snacks that you can have for your preor post-dinner.” Later down the road, the Tippling House will utilize the small building (formerly Taco Spot, for those who remember) adjacent to 221 Coming and offer takeout lunch services “that have nothing to do with the wine bar,” expected to start in the new year, added Conway. The Tippling House is open 4-9 p.m., Tues.-Thurs. and 4-10 p.m., Fri. and Sat.

Charlotte-based 5th Street Group, owners of 5Church and Tempest in Downtown Charleston, announced a rebrand of the 5Church name to Church and Union, an expansion of the Nashville, Tennessee restaurant brand. “The 5th Street Group intends to continue expanding this story by moving on to Church and Union; a brand that, while in its infancy, has all the makings of something truly inspiring. We hope you will come along for the ride. CU soon,” the hospitality group said in a press release. The 5Church name will retire on Dec. 31, rebranding on Jan. 1 to Church and Union. —Michael Pham

Alan Price is aware that his debut album, Goodlow, is all over the musical map. He knows that the thudding hard-rock groove of the opening, “Powerlines,” sounds completely different from the synth pop of “Long Day,” which in turn sounds nothing like the sunny guitar pop of “Think Fast.” In fact, it could be argued that other than Price’s smooth vocals, each song on Goodlow sounds like you’ve just switched the dial to a new radio station, right up until the closing track, “Upside,” which brings a countrymusic-style pedal steel into the equation. Lyrically, Price takes on a variety of subjects. “Man Up on the Rooftop” deals with suicide, but “John Wayne” is a whimsical ditty based on a dream Price had. “Upside” is about looking at the positives in life, while “My Heart” deals with a failed relationship. Goodlow covers a lot of bases, in other words. “When I went into it, I said I don’t really want any parameters on what I’m going to do,” Price said. “I’m not going in to write a rock album, I’m not going in to write a synth-pop album, and I’m not going in to write a country album. But I’ll be damned if there isn’t some of all of that stuff involved in it.” Price is actually proud of the kaleidoscopic musical landscape because it allowed him to express himself fully as an artist. “When I look at that album, it’s almost

like musical splatter paint — I exploded in a room and it was all the colors that were my favorite things in music — the album is representative of a lot of the things that I love about everything musical,” he said. “I’m excited to hear people be confused by all of the different sounds that are on my album.” Price has sung and played guitar since he was a child, but up until a few years ago, the Charleston native was more comfortable as a sideman than standing in the spotlight. “In my 20s and 30s, I played in a bunch of rock bands locally and regionally and had the opportunity about 10-12 years ago to start working with some bigger bands,” Price said. “I toured with the band Shinedown, which is a multi-platinum band from Atlantic Records that’s been very successful. Then I linked up with some other guys from a band called Sevendust and they’d started a new band called Call Me No One, and I did a national tour with them, and that was a great experience.” Once he moved back to Charleston and started a family, Price started looking at his own career. “I wanted to plant my roots in Charleston because I grew up here,” he said. “So about seven or eight years ago I started going out and playing bar gigs just to maintain a living. I wanted to continue playing as much as possible, and I played hundreds of bar gigs every year and suddenly got thrown into not having a band anymore. I’ve always been a contributing member to other things, and it felt great helping other people and helping the bigger picture, and now, it’s like I’m doing my own thing and I’m really discovering a

sound that I love.” That discovery eventually led to Goodlow, which was recorded in Charleston and Nashville with some of Price’s musicbiz connections, including Billy Idol’s drummer, Erik Eldenius. Price says that despite the varying topics and sounds, there’s a cohesive message he’s trying to get across on the album’s 13 tracks. “If you ever come to see me perform, one thing I’m known for is these little heart stickers that I pass out,” he said. “They’re free everywhere I play, whether I’m selling merchandise or just playing outside. And it really does signify that the core message is one of love and positivity. Life is all about trying to find balance, and love is the thing that can balance all of the dark and the light out to help you find your way through everything. Love and heart and positivity all around is the message I’m trying to cast; it’s really about finding the silver lining.”

Niecy Blues drops new cerebral tune Local musician Niecy Blues’ latest single, “Bones Become the Trees,” is a pleasant departure from rhythm and blues. The yawning synths and foggy vocals enmesh the airy, ambient track with an ethereal vibe, bringing your mind into a peaceful space. Recently returned from a West Coast tour with alternative artist Puma Blue, Niecy is working on a debut full-length record. With a different sound than what typically comes out of the solo artists in Charleston, Niecy carries influences from ambient punk artist Deerhunter and early Tina Bell grunge. —Chelsea Grinstead

Gospel singer Helen Freeman has found hope in the wait “I would sing The Clark Sisters music when I was younger and just dream,” said local gospel artist Helen Freeman of her early fascination with the genre. Being on stage in front of a crowd just clicks with Freeman, who grew up performing for audiences since she was 3 years old singing in the choir at Gethsemane Church downtown. She got her foot in the door when she began singing regularly in 1985 with local group, Desmond Pringle & the Proclamation. “I would sing throughout the Charleston area, and I think that’s how people got to know who I was vocally,” Freeman said, who ended up being featured in The Chronicle for her performance at the local black-owned newspaper’s 20th anniversary conference where civil rights activist Dick Gregory spoke. “Then I started climbing and climbing to more major stages after that,” she said, having opened for acts like The Winans and Shirley Caesar. Her son, Stephen Freeman, who is a touring musician out of Atlanta, is the one who brought her back to music after she took a hiatus for about a decade to focus on being a mom. “He said, ‘Mom, I’m tired of hearing you say you’re going back into the studio. I’m getting you back into the studio.’ And that’s exactly what Stephen did, and it changed my life,” she said. “I write the songs, he puts the music to them.” Her son produced her 2018 album, It’s My Time, working on the material in between playing keys on tour for stars such as Mary J. Blige, Jessie J and Keke Wyatt. Getting back to her music was the right move: the album’s title track won international acknowledgement with a Prayze Factor Award for best 2021 praise and

Award-winning gospel artist Helen Freeman is working on her second album, God is Great worship song, her holiday song, “Christmas Day,” is currently receiving radio play, and last month, she opened for the No Fear Conference in North Charleston. For her, gospel music takes on the role of good news. “Especially during this time, there are people that are dealing with loss of a loved one … people are suicidal … life is happening to everyone,” she said. “Gospel music can give people a place of hope that things can be better, that things can change.” “It brings a level of peace to me,” Freeman said, who in the past has experienced her own life turned upside down with the death of her brother. “Being able to sing a song and meditate on that song gives me a place of rest, calm and stillness where I can just breathe.” —Chelsea Grinstead
